‘ come into your own‚ aim for the moon ╱ no looking back. ‘
Wynda’s magical roots and her craft stem from Celtic earth magic, as she belongs to a line of individuals who are predominantly hedge witches and practice magic based on their Celtic heritage. The Blodllwynog ( bloth-HLOY-nog ) Coven have an ancient affinity with foxes, which really reflects their namesake, as it derives from the rough translation from Welsh to English as “fox flower,” or “fox bloom” to reflect their connection to both the animal and the nature of their magic. Fox familiars are treated as guides and companions. Every witch that turns twelve years of age in the coven are paired with a fox, and often, the child must venture out in the woods on their own and perform a ritual to summon a fox companion, and often the fox that approaches them and accepts the name that the young witch gives it will become their familiar.
Wynda’s fox is named Meillionen Gwyn ( White Clover ), or Mel, for short. All fox familiars have been named after flowers in Welsh as part of Wynda’s family / coven tradition. Mel has multiple roles in Wynda’s craft, she serves as a messenger, a conduit of magic, an assistant in rituals, ceremonies and spells, a courier for ingredients and supplies, and a guide. Wynda can summon Mel no matter where she is, as the fox is granted the ability to teleport and travel through realms. That is part of the bargain when fox and witches of the Blodllwynog Coven form a bond, where they exchange and share magic. From it, Wynda has access to earth magic through Mel, and Mel has access to Wynda’s grimoire and magic reserve to cast spells of her own and the ability to shapeshift. In short, when Mel and Wynda bonded, Mel went through a metamorphosis of some kind that transformed her from an ordinary fox to some sort of proximation to a púca, a shapeshifting spirit of Celtic folklore.
In terms of Wynda’s abilities through her craft, she is primarily focused on protection, charms, and healing. Her focuses a lot of her spells based on herbs and crystals for creating amulets and wards. She has dabbled in elemental magic for combative purposes, as the nature of her magic is more focused on the aforementioned. Hence, she isn’t that much of a combative witch but will assume a role that requires her to do so.
And because her coven is incredibly seclusive and hardly strays outside of what they usually do, it puts Wynda at odds with them as she wants to strive towards doing more with her magic. Generally, because of the low and humble profile the Blodllwynog Coven maintain, they really do not hold as much prestige as other powerful witch covens. Because of that, Wynda feels incredibly self-conscious of that, and even more so with her girlfriend who happens to belong to an incredibly powerful coven. She knows she isn’t a powerful, or extremely talented witch, at best she is average. However, her girlfriend could care less about that, but Wynda really did not see it that way and felt like she had so much to prove. This is what spurred her into joining the Preternatural Syndicate, and even though she is not expelled out of her coven, her family informed her for the most part she will be on her own, as it was her own choice to pursue her own journey. However, they will welcome her with open arms again whether she succeeds in her goal or not.
While navigating the world without a coven, she isn’t completely alone ⏤ she has her teammates. And perhaps from them, she will learn to embrace who she is, and find and realize her own strength.
