' my friend, when the blood has dried you've seen me from all sides; still down for the ride. '
Lorelei Desroches came from old money, very old money. Born from a family of French aristocrats from the 19th century she was well accustomed to a very comfortable life. She was beloved by her peers for not only her grace and beauty, but for her magnanimous and warm heart. However, her ambition and keen interest in medical science has struck her as an oddball, and of course, she was quite often discouraged from pursuing her interest in it, but it hasn’t stopped her from stealthily acquiring texts and pouring over volumes of notes on human anatomy. Her governess-turned-lady-in-waiting, Séraphine, who mysteriously didn’t age and continued to defy time, was able to do her huge favours in acquiring more texts for her to read in secret.
As much as Lorelei enjoyed the comforts of her upbringing, and as much as she adored her parents, it was clear that her former governess became more of a mother figure to her than anything and the woman’s spouse, Auguste ( the valet for Lorelei’s father ), who also strangely defied age became somewhat of a father figure to her, as well through the course of Lorelei’s childhood. While Lorelei’s relationship with her parents was far from distant, they were far too out of touch and often dismissed their daughter’s interests and concerns regarding the overall welfare of the “less fortunate” and her genuine desire to help them. They kept insisting that she shouldn’t worry her “pretty little head” about such “trivial matters,” or “empty pursuits that won’t get her where she needs to be.” And worse, beneath all the praise and coddling of their “beautiful and stately daughter,” Lorelei was severely undervalued and constantly invalidated by her parents. And thus, she often turned to her former governess and the valet for comfort.
And unfortunately, Lorelei’s parents made their underlying indifference all the more apparent when they were too preoccupied with their own misfortune when Lorelei fell mortally ill. They saw it as a terrible a blemish on their perfect lives. Even though Lorelei was bed-ridden and most of the days she lay barely awake, she began to finally understand her true place within her family ⏤ a once-prized possession losing its value. Heartbroken by this revelation and with too much time to reflect, Lorelei’s condition began to deteriorate further. This was all in spite of the amount of additional care from her beloved lady-in-waiting and her husband.
Right on the precipice death, Séraphine and Auguste arrived by her bedside. At the time, Lorelei assumed that they were there to bid her farewell when her parents wouldn’t and was elated to at least see the people who treasured her for the last time. Instead of tears and sorrowful expressions on their faces, there was resolve, a silent exchange in agreement between the two, and that was all she remembered.
Séraphine and Auguste Desroches have taken Lorelei under their wing, transforming her into their fledgling and adopted her into their coven. She woke up in a room that wasn’t her own, lips pressed against an opened vein in a wrist, suckling on it as though she were a newborn. As she looked around with growing clarity, she slowly realized what became of her, and whom her new guardians were. The young vampiress took on the name of her newfound family and coven, one that was particularly known for being extremely mellow and often stayed under the radar; not ones to incite conflict or havoc upon others. They have fared well as experts in blending into human society and living amongst them unfettered.
