It was beginning to feel like it was a drinking game now - every time they started talking about their respective scars, the uneasiness of it all caused them to pick up another drink and knock it back, hard liquor burning their throats on the way down. If it was to help them forget or help them talk about it, that was up for debate. It was hot as hell out here in the Virginia summertime — but she originated from Texas so really this was nothing to her. That didn't mean she didn't wish she had one of those portable fans she could hang around her neck to cool off every time she felt the sun hit her the wrong way. The shade on Daryl's porch was a welcome reprieve from the heat, sitting on the steps with him and talking about this, that, or the other; nothing of importance really, nothing that demanded their immediate attention. For once, things were kind of peaceful, something she had been looking for in Alexandria ever since she arrived her.

In the midst of joking, Daryl's hand had nudged against her knee, this hot day forcing her into some capri pants that now showed off the scar on her knee. It wasn't anything serious, although to a six year old flipping off their bike it had been at the time. The pigmentation of the scar itself had faded over time but it was still ridged against her skin, something she sometimes ran her fingers across just because.

Juniper hadn't meant to show up a complete mess before his eyes but she hadn't any other choice. The morning had already started out tense with a continuation of a smuggling job that she was pulling off, knowing that the terrain in which she would be traveling could be dangerous if the opportunity was given — which it was. Falling into an unforeseen trap, she had been raided but hadn't gone down without a fight. The injuries she sustained proved that much, Juniper tried to flex her fingers to see the extent of the damage done, but all her digits could do was tremble fiercely before she gave up.

Dark clouds had been threatening them all afternoon and they finally made good on their promise by delivering a rainstorm. Thunder cracked loudly all around them, flashes of lightning in the distance that only seemed to be getting closer. Boots dug through thick grass and mud as they continued to trudge on. Alexandria was about an hour's walk away but at this rate, it was going to take them even longer to get back home.

❝ We need to find somewhere to take cover! ❞ Juniper shouted through the onslaught of rain that continued to pelt them. Both of them were drenched, clothes soaking wet and clinging heavily to their shivering bodies, hair sticking to their faces.
