Hi! I love this blog, and I hope I'm not being too annoying, but i was wondering what LACE compliant means?
sorry this took me so long to answer!! you’re aren’t being annoying at all, tbh i forget that i’ve never really explained my whole stance on LaCE (laws & customs of the eldar)
basically, it’s…….. this is a separate essay that was written long after lotr or the stories that we see in the silm, & almost none of the stories that involve elves are compliant with the things tolkien later wrote in that essay. like, half of it directly contradicts narrative events. & besides that, LaCE are customs supposedly given to the elves of aman by the valar, which…….. logically means that they had no place in elven societies in middle earth? so the sindar, the silvan, and the avari all would have had completely different customs?
while there would have been some blending of cultures later on in the stories, thanks to the noldor returning to middle earth, claiming that all of the continent’s elves ditched their own cultural norms to adopt those of the noldor, given to them by valar that these elves had little to no contact with, doesn’t really make sense to me?
so the way i view LaCE from an rp perspective is this : the elves of aman (the vanyar, the noldor, and to an extent the falmari) follow LaCE, because they’re the ones the valar gave those customs to, but the elves of middle earth (the sindar, the silvan, the avari) don’t, because they had minimal, if any, contact with the valar & their cultures developed pretty much independently from their influence! & even within that, there’s a lot of room depending on how much characters personally believe in following it! hence my label of “loosely LaCE compliant” in my sidebar!
honestly no matter how you look at things, at the end of the day it’s only a list of customs, & no society only ever has people that 100% follow every social rule. & considering that the essay is, at best, only arguably canon in relation to lotr & the silm, I think it’s really just up to how much you personally want to apply it to your interpretations of tolkien’s world & characters.
