“that’s not how i meant it,” maya signed back before looking away. she didn’t mean who they were individually, but as a pair. their relationship wasn’t the same -- would never be the same. how could it be? kazi had betrayed her and maya had killed him. so why did she find herself still around him? maya should hate him for what had happened. for making her feel alone again. but that was one of the reasons that she still sought kazi out. the only person in this city that understood her. had a connection to her. despite recent events. “i meant us as a... a --” she dropped her hands before finishing her sentence. as a what? a couple? that’s not what they were, or ever was. but maybe that’s what she wanted to be. maybe here, without the pressures of any external factors, they could both just be them. like they had been in private with each other. it was the only time maya didn’t have to put on some kind of a façade. even if sometimes she wanted to, kazi never let her. but he always did it gently. never forced her to open up. he just had that affect on her so she did it naturally.
