with her memories back, it was only natural that maya turned up at the roller rink. she didn't know, of course, in her fake life that the owner was her uncle. the amount of times she had skated here in her childhood. it felt strange to have interacted with him before without knowing. maya wondered if he even remembered her. hopefully. maybe he could figure out the weird shit going on here. the bell rang twice as maya pressed it, waiting for the figure in the back to emerge.

"loneliness is about the scariest thing there is." (cassie for any)
Tumblr media
maya thought about that statement for a moment, with first instinct to disagree. but she had never really been alone. she had her father. then kazi. then the gang. she had felt no fear. not until that night with kazi. she had fear then. fear of losing him. now, maybe she did understand the statement better. but she would never show fear. never seem weak. "what about death?" maya scribbled on to her pad, holding it up to the other. most people feared death. if they didn't, they were idiots. fearing death kept you safe.

My thoughts on Echo
(Not that anyone's dying to hear my takes lmao) This is gonna be a long post so buckle up
I feel like a lot of people either really loved it or really hated it. I think I'm somewhere in the middle. There was a lot to love about it, there were some really great moments, but also there was a lot left to be desired. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I hoped, but I want to be fair about it. I'm interested to see if people agree with me, if I'm completely wrong, etc. So feel free to tell me if I'm way off base with some of these opinions.
To start, here's the things I liked about it (in no particular order):
The fight choreography. The brutality of it was really something, especially in that first episode. It felt pretty grounded and real for the most part, which I really appreciated. That's one of the things that set Daredevil apart, so it's really great to see that Marvel's willing to go there again (although I think it got tamer as the show went on, wish the brutality would have kept up)
Tumblr media
Maya's characterization, especially in the beginning of the show. I liked her moral complexity, I liked her refusal to be a good guy or a bad guy (wish that continued more throughout, tbh)
The canonization of the Netflix shows!!! We finally have acknowledgement. The scene with the hammer? The flashbacks to Fisk's father? Amazing.
Tumblr media
Parallels between Maya and Fisk. I loved the way their relationship directly mirrored the way Fisk interacted with his father. Fisk in essence, becoming his father—the exact person he always wanted to avoid. And then Maya kicking the ice cream man when he's already down? Like that scene with the bully in DD season 1? Chef's kiss.
Sound design/editing. They made some really cool creative decisions here, especially for a show about a deaf person. Very cool.
Depiction of Indigenous culture. I'm not qualified to really speak on this, so I may be way off base, but it felt really respectful to me. It didn't seem to fetishize or exoticize Maya's heritage; it explored the everyday lives of her and her family, the way they partcipate in their culture. The combination of her powers with her heritage was beautiful to me.
The cinematography at certain scenes. I don't think it was exceptional throughout, but there were some great moments. The flashback sequences with her ancestors, the silent movie thing, and the scene with Fisk and the ice cream man all had pretty stunning cinematography.
Tumblr media
D'onofrio's acting. But that's a given.
Disability representation. It felt to me like it was done in a very respectful, normalizing way, which is so important.
Alaqua Cox's performance. I was really impressed. Maya Lopez is her first role; and she's really killed it. I think at times she could have expanded her range a little, but overall, very excellent.
As a bonus (because the show's not about him and I don't want to make it all about him): Matt's cameo. Amazing. It was such a cool decision to show a Daredevil fight from the villain perspective. It made Matt look soooo scary. Also, I love the implications that he's being puppeteered by Fisk! Even after all he's done to take Fisk down, Fisk still has the upper hand. Fisk knew he was there, and lured him there to get Maya to fight him? As a training exercise? Really cool, interesting implications to be explored in DDBA.
Tumblr media
So there's a lot to love about the show obviously. However, at least for me, there was also a lot to criticize—and the criticisms overpowered the good things imo. Again, that's just me, and if you loved the show, more power to you!
Here's the things that I didn't like:
Tonal whiplash. It felt like the show couldn't really decide if it wanted to be a dark gritty crime thriller, or if it wanted to be a heartwarming family dramedy. There was also a little too much "Marvel humor," if you know what I mean. It was just really jarring at times.
The bait and switch. Whatever your thoughts on the show, I think it's fair to say that it was WAAAY off from what the trailers gave us. The trailers relied so heavily on content from the original Daredevil show, and the way they were edited made it seem like it was going to be a lot closer, tonally and quality-wise, to Daredevil. They made it look way darker and grittier than the show actually was. To be clear: I'm NOT upset that Matt wasn't in it more. It wasn't his show, and I was more than happy with his cameo. I'm just irritated at the bait and switch from the trailers, both tone and content wise.
Fisk's characterization. This is probably the thing that irritated me the most. He was so weak here!! I wasn't scared of him at all. In Daredevil, every time Fisk came on screen I felt like my intestines were shriveling up in fear. In Echo, though, he just felt so vulnerable and helpless and almost pathetic. I mean, Daredevil showed Fisk's vulnerability, but it almost made him scarier. Here, though, he just felt like a run-of-the-mill Marvel villain. A bad guy, sure, but not really scary. (I think the exception to this is the ice cream man scene, which was excellent).
Tumblr media
Emotional stakes. They were too low for me. The writers didn't really give me any reason to care that much about what was going on. I didn't feel terribly connected to Maya or her family; I don't know, I just didn't feel that we had enough investment in them. I don't really know how to solve this problem—it definitely wasn't a matter of screen time, because they got plenty. But for some reason, I just didn't really feel connected to any of them. I think my one exception to this was Henry; something about him was really compelling, and I really cared what happened to him. But with everyone else, I just felt sort of disconnected and a little apathetic. To make matters worse, though, it felt like the writers kept trying to use shorthand to make us care—they used different tropes and techniques to try to manufacture emotion; lots of sappy music and dialogue and things like that. But honestly, it all felt very unearned. It felt like emotional manipulation a little bit, if I'm being honest.
Fisk and Maya's relationship. We were just kind of told that they are close, and we get one scene of Maya as a little girl (again, the ice cream scene, which was great). But at that point, they were already close. I think I would have bought into their relationship more if we got to see how they first met, and why Fisk cared about her so deeply. The thing that sets Fisk apart from other Marvel villains is his great capacity for love, imo. But their relationship felt cheap and inauthentic, and I just didn't buy it. I think we needed more scenes like the ice cream man scene for their relationship to feel really authentic.
Tumblr media
Why was Fisk willing to give Maya his criminal empire? Make her the queenpin? After she shot him in the head??? This is a man who decapitated someone after that guy embarrassed him. Maya attempts murder, and Fisk is like "take my business." It just didn't make any sense to me. Maybe it would have made more sense if we got some more in-depth views of Fisk's love for Maya, but as it was, this just fell flat for me.
Fisk felt out of character in a lot of regards, but one of them is that he never learned ASL. What??? He's a smart man, and very good at languages. In Daredevil we see that he speaks the languages of everyone he works with—Madame Gao, Nobu, etc.—because he respects them and because he wants to be involved and know the ins and outs of his people. But he won't even learn ASL for a woman who he supposedly sees as a daughter???
The contact lens thing. That was just so weird, I did not like it Sam-I-Am. I don't know, maybe they'll make it work better if they use it in DDBA, but who knows.
Tumblr media
How did Fisk gain so much power again??? At the end of Daredevil season 3, which is now officially canon, Fisk was universally hated by the city after everything he did. But suddenly he has all this power, and it's unexplained. To be fair, I'll give the show a temporary pass. I assume that DDBA will answer some of those questions, probably gaining power during the blip, going under the radar until he has the media under his control, etc. But it felt weird not to have any acknowledgement of his current position or how he got there throughout the course of the show.
Fisk being defeated with Maya's new powers. I don't know, I think just the way it was executed, it felt really cheesy. Even cringey. I think the storyline of the ancestor magic could have been so powerful and cool against a different sort of villain. It would have been more impactful against a villain who had been set up as a more direct metaphor for racism or colonialism (I mean, Fisk is used as a metaphor for gentrification in Daredevil, but they never really go into that in Echo). I don't know, I think the way he was defeated was just really dissatisfying, and I was just disappointed.
Maya's powers in general felt a little underdeveloped. It's different than the comics, which is fine, but in that case, I think they should have spent even more time going over exactly what she can do. I don't know, again, it just felt cheesy at times. Which would have been fine in another show, but in this one, which was billed as a gritty, dark, crime drama, it just felt really out of place.
Her family members suddenly getting powers and then easily beating up Fisk's goons? That felt really cheesy to me. It made Fisk feel absolutely powerless and way less interesting of a villain. I just was never at all in any doubt that Maya's family was going to come out of it okay, because Fisk was not scary and they beat him so easily. It made the stakes feel really low. At the end of the show I was just like, "Oh, Fisk is weak. Guess Matt apparently is too, because Maya and her family took Fisk out in like five minutes."
Honestly, just the whole last episode. Before that episode, the show was at, like, a 7 for me. But the last episode dropped it down to a 5 imo. Again, a lot of the stuff in episode 5 is fine, but just didn't necessarily fit the genre or tone of the show.
Tumblr media
I was probably going into it with expectations too high. But I think, considering the talent that Marvel has, the show could have been incredible. I don't want to blame the artists too much, honestly, because there's clearly a lot of great artistic choices throughout. The whole thing feels like the writers wanted to do risky, interesting things with the storytelling, and then studio execs swooped in and were like
"No! You have to follow The Formula™️! The lead has to believe in herself and help everyone with magic and the villain needs to be defeated really conventionally and easily. And you need to use lots of jokes and sitcom style banter. It has to feel like a MARVEL movie, because everyone loves those. No one has any complaints about how stale they've gotten lately. Stick to the formula."
So it just feels like a bunch of half-baked decisions and risks they started on, but didn't fully commit to.
Idk, I'll give it a rewatch in a little while and see if my opinion changes or not. But those are my thoughts at this point. Again, not the worst show ever, but far below the bar of what it could have been. A lot of potential, but overall not to the standard that I think it deserved.
I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts; if you agree, disagree, think I'm an idiot, etc.
(An obligatory Matt gif to end the post)

Don’t be deceived when people tell you that Marvels new show, “Echo” is like the others. It is in a different location, the writing is paced different and the overall atmosphere are a total different change than anything we’ve seen. This is a nice change, it even somehow manages to be different than the 2021 show “Miss Marvel” which some like and others didn’t. I believe this show will have the same amount of levity in that regard. In this show, we are viewing the world as Maya Lopez played excellently by Alaqua Cox. She resides in New York. Yet under certain circumstances I’m avoiding going into due to spoilers, she travels to Tamaha Oklahoma. As someone who lives relatively close to this town, it was quite nice to see someone who lives in the same realm as the Avengers, doing Avengers things so close to where I live but that is strictly bias. Regardless, she travels their and re-connects with her heritage and culture via past lives. In prior lives, she has trained and become a warrior with the ability to use super strength. What is interesting however, is that while Daredevil has enhanced senses, yet cannot see, it is established VERY early on, Maya AKA “Echo” has enhanced senses, yet cannot hear. She is mute yet communicates with sign language. This brings up an issue I have with the show that is detected early on, as if you have seen any of the John Wick films, (while drastically different than this) I do wish it was handled in that regard where subtitles where incorporated into the film itself. This show does not show subtitles, leaving the audience to sort of figure it out for themselves. While this works in the first 2 to 3 episodes, by the final fifth episode it makes the story somewhat hard to follow. While Disney+ has excellent subtitles as always, for someone with slow internet, it would not correspond correctly and was very hard to follow. Around the 5th episode very important plot elements occurred which I did not understand at all because the subtitles where down. Something that could have been fixed easily with a CGI approach of words on the screen. Similar to what the John Wick franchise did, especially in the third film. Speaking of action scenes, every one in this show from the first episode, all the way to the final fifth episode, are done EXCELLENT. It makes the show worth the watch. If nothing else, the action scenes make this show worth watching alone. One in a roller skating rink, to my personal favorite, the battle between Daredevil and Echo in the first episode. Speaking of Daredevil, he’s not in this, their is ONE SCENE with him. It is very much Maya’s story. What is interesting however is the antagonist of the film is Wilson Fisk. Episode 3 ends with a large cliffhanger, as he at one point was Echo’s guardian. This makes a very interesting and tense approach to the hero vs. villain dynamic. A very “outside of the box” approach to the extremely over used, good guy vs. bad guy dynamic, that is saturating the super hero market nowadays via “Superhero fatigue.” I will say, the scene with Daredevil is done perfect and at the very least watch the first episode to see everyone’s favorite lawyer again. I’m getting chills typing this just thinking about how excellently handled the character is done in this show. As far as my biggest complaint with the show, it’s very hard to follow, your so focused on the plot which is derivative of the action scenes complimenting it, all the way until the final episode, which makes the ending a bit mediocre, leaving a sour taste in the audiences mouth. Every action scene is near perfect, yet every plot scene is very much not, and theirs a lot of plot points. The plot is interesting enough to hold the show together but in the end, your really just wanting to get to the next fight scene, making each interaction between the characters feel like a drag. In the end, Echo is a enjoyable watch, but not a stand out. The plot is forgettable but the action is not. I’m going to give Echo, a 5 out of 10.
+Great action
+Kingpin steals the show.
-Hard to follow
-Forgettable finale with no pay off hardly.
-Some dialogue issues.

I have this insane (or maybe not) theory about Frank Castle being in Echo. (even just a cameo) It's not really a theory but I think him and Maya Lopez would be an interesting team up, since they both are morally grey with a penchant for insane violence. Plus Echo is rated TV-MA and Daredevil is already confirmed to be in it so is Kingpin.... Both leading up to Daredevil: Born Again. Thoughts?
Truthfully, I don't know what that iskfdjslkdfjldfjkgl. (let me go google for a moment lolol) (Oh, okay, she was introduced in Hawkeye....I did not watch that.)
I actually don't know that many characters from Marvel, so I'm not sure if Maya Lopez and Frank Castle ever interact in the comics or anything. But, seeing that she's based in New York, hearing from you that Daredevil is making an appearance -- I don't even think it's an insane theory to think he could pop in. Especially considering they're planning more Frank stuff and realistically have to pull him in and reintroduce him to Marvel audiences who maybe didn't watch the Netflix marvel cinematic universe. Fisk has been reintroduced within the MCU. Matt has been reintroduced within the MCU. So, Frank...👀
Even if they don't give him a cameo, I'm of the opinion that it's awkward for all of these shows (both from the nmcu and from the new disney+ mcu) to have all of these characters based in the same states and cities and never have them pop in on each other's shows. Like...........they should all have casual cameos here and there. And even if it's not a physical cameo, people talk about the people they know. Their names should come up from time to time. If it messes up the order of how they're doing things, then obviously he shouldn't be a part of it -- we want it to make sense. But, if it doesn't? Matt and Fisk are in it? (But, my google search says Fisk was shot at the end of Hawkeye -- so, who knows what's going on with that. Certainly not I -- the girl who didn't watch it 🤦🏾‍♀️💀) They're all in New York? Frank is also in New York? Then come on Marvel, if it can potentially fit into the scene and the story, toss him in for a moment.
I'm seeing that Ken Kristensen is on the writing team for Echo, and he wrote on three episodes of The Punisher. So, maybe there's a chance.
Although, I believe he's confirmed for DDBA. Like, he's in the whole show. So, his reintroduction might be being saved for that -- what with them having actual history.

echo episode 1 thoughts
spoilers below the cut
to be completely honest, I was not planning on watching echo. not for any reason other than being busy and not as into marvel as I used to be, but the universe intervened (I'm sick and stuck at home this week and saw a post that daredevil was in it for a scene) so I checked out the pilot.
with that said-- maya is a pretty fucking cool character. an indigenous, disabled, badass woman that wiped the floor with matt murdock is absolutely the kind of shit I like to see marvel giving energy to. I also love that her disabilities are not explained away. Maya didn't grow up and can magically read lips. They continue to show her prosthetic, and even remember sound effects during battle. I also really liked the use of ASL throughout. I'm seeing a theme of who takes the time to learn it or at least attempt to use it versus those that don't (*cough* kingpin *cough*) and love the premise as well as the very realistic depiction of the different levels of fluency. I don't know ASL but I just know biscuit's first interaction was endearing as hell.
I do have some qualms with the pacing of the episode. I understand they were trying to establish a lot with what they had and I think they did that rather successfully. I'm not sure how much I liked feeling like the entire first episode was a recap of a season I missed, though. That seems to be a testament of the writers trying to get to the story they want to tell rather than rolling the dice of getting through a bunch of prior seasons... i can respect that. maybe if this show has enough success we can go back and see more of how the New York plotline unfolds? I'm sure it'll fuel some pretty bomb fic either way.
tl;dr- came for daredevil, stayed for maya lopez being a badass. I hope others do the same

"Teenage boys are the worst." Suki & Maya @tclerateiit
Tumblr media
maya scoffed slightly with a smile at the other's sentence. she definitely agreed with it. "most definitely," she said, along with signing the words as well. maya still spoke softly, but she had worked with suki for a while now. she knew the other could hear her. "i would love to say it gets better when they're older, but some boys never mature."

maya hadn't expected the other to know sign language. it was rare back in her normal world, never mind this place that was straight out of a fantasy book. but considering this girl seemed to be foreign to this place too, the fact she knew sign wasn't as shocking. "can't give you any dating advice," maya signed back, she had never dated anyone. "but the best place to find food is in the kitchen off the main hall. apparently we can just take what we want." that was suspicious. people always wanted something. but even with her on guard nature, this place had an aura of serenity about it that was hard not to get sucked into.

nothing i'll ever do, no amount of time spent developing this character, no amount of memes, one shots lore or whatever has ever made people see her and i'm fucking tired. i'm tired of feeling like i have to fight to have my muse noticed in this fucking rpc. i want to be involved in things! i want to feel like my muse matters and no matter how hard i try that's never going to happen, is it. whether its because i write an oc or i dont have the right friends or whatever. i have been trying to find my place in this rpc for two years and ive never found it. im kind of tired of trying. i love alice i love her so much and it hurts so bad that people don't see how special she is to me. i know she's special, i am confident that i've made a good character and that's why it hurts so bad when no matter how much effort i put in to write and reblog memes and interact it always feels like i'm missing out.
so for now i'm done. it's not permanent, at least i don't intend for it to be. but i'm too fucking exhausted to put up a resistance anymore. i'm tired of reblogging memes and not getting any. my threads i do have i've had for so long i'm losing interest. goodnight.

Daredevil (1998) #53
“I leave without another word.
There can be no satisfaction in any further external action. There can be no satisfaction from anything either of us has to say.
And yet there is something emotionally unsettling in his words. Is he still playing chess? Probably. But I think that in his own warped way he is speaking from the heart.
I believe him.”

x. starter for @dredevil

Eyes scanned the peeling lettering painted on the frosted glass window, oblong shapes moving behind the door indiscernible from one another as they shuffled around the close quarters of the shared office space. Maya reached for the door handle, not bothering to knock as she let herself into what had been labeled ‘Nelson & Murdock: Attorneys at Law’ at the ground floor by a single cast plate. Taking in the sight of two men an one woman huddled over a desk at the center of the room, the top of which appeared to be cluttered with countless manila folders and court briefs that appeared to be in no particular order or filing system, Maya merely raised her eyebrows in question as eyes fell on her and a pair of red spectacles angled in her direction. “My name is Maya Lopez...” Her hands began signing in tandem with her lips, though her words were drawn out a bit slower and longer, purposefully enunciating as she communicated through two languages. “I’m deaf. Yes born not hearing loss. Yes, I can read lips but be slower.” She signed, rolling her eyes as she fired off the obvious questions she’d been asked her entire life. “My Uncle... sent me for legal advice?” It came out as a question as she looked around the room, unsure of who exactly to address as Nelson or Murdock for that matter.
