what a phrase that was !! unfamiliar yet familiar all the same . . . nobody likes hearing it, and yet when they do it's usually for a good reason. there had been times when she was with b-komachi where some of her fellow groupmates had said it to one another . . .

it had been said within earshot, clearly meant to hurt her and yet all she had done at the time was shrug it off.

A VOICE ACTING JOB... for a game that was set to release for a portable game console on that day. ai just voiced a minor character for the game, but she was excited about the job all the same. she played the first boss in the game - one that tells the cast of a rumor of people being possesses, only to be the one possessing the townspeople. She's slain in the end, but it was a role worthy of showing her name on some of the advertisements, if nothing else.

unfortunately, the game just seemed to be flying off the shelves !! no matter where she went, she couldn't seem to find a copy to purchase. to think that she'd be spending her off day like this !! clad in a disguise she enters what she thinks may just be the fourth or fifth shop - a single copy sits neatly on the shelf. she reaches out to it, the game nearly in her grasp as her fingers brush against someone else's.

looks like someone had beat her to it, right at the end. though she may have been disguised, she wouldn't hear the end of it if word got out that she caused a scene over a video game of all things.

she moves her hand back, offering a small smile as she adjusted her hat to cover her eyes. ❝ take it, it's yours !! ❞

16. A kiss in the rain

when they entered the arcade it was bright and sunny, not a single cloud in the sky overhead...

when they left, however, it was as though the proverbial bucket had dropped - a torrential onslaught of rain falling from the sky. she hadn't accounted for rain ( maybe it was her own fault for not checking the weather ahead of time, or maybe they'd just been unlucky... )

thankfully, he had.

the two of them manage to fit under his umbrella, though despite her small stature they're still practically shoulder to shoulder. so close that she wants to reach for his free hand...

...and so she does.

it is not a short walk back to the station, but at least they'll both be ( relatively ) dry. she does her best to keep a pleasant conversation flowing as they make the trek together, they're only a few short blocks away from the stations when she stops in place, giving his hand a gentle tug.

❝ could you lean down for a second ?? ❞

nobody was out right now in the storm. it was just the two of them... so... she figured that it would be okay...

...yes, it would be okay if she took the time to give him a kiss.

there were no paparazzi out here right now ( even if there were, they were hidden under the umbrella, ) no cars zooming by on the street.

it was just them, they were alone.

ai doesn't allow herself to let it last too long, but it is enough to make her feelings known.

the words are whispered against his lips as she breaks the kiss, she wonders how audible it is against the rain but...

...she hopes it is enough.

maybe it's cliché to kiss in the rain - but it was something that ai felt she had to do... and it had to be right then, right there. otherwise she would have went home feeling like she'd missed an opportunity.. and she'd rather not end the night regretting what could have been.

voice is soft and low as she traces small hearts on his back with her fingertip, gently... carefully. it was her first time seeing his scars --- at least up this close. soft exhale escapes her lips, a starry gaze is fixated on him, his back, his muscles...

ai could only imagine all the pain he went through to get all these. she still had scars of her own - small ones from when she was a child, ones that were mainly faded... any leftover visible ones were always covered up with makeup when in public.

( as an idol, she isn't allowed to show them... it'd lead to nasty rumors, or worse. )

arms are quick to snake around him, wrapping him in a soft embrace from behind.

words are whispered softly into his ear as she places her head on his shoulder.

shaky laugh as the former idol gives her initial reply, a hand instinctively moving towards her abdomen. she remembers the knife, how the fan - ryousuke - plunged it into her without a second thought.

ai hoshino remembers the words. his accusations and anger. how she still spoke to him so sweetly despite it all.

...how she bled out over the floor, cradling aqua until she breathed her last.

the first and only time she said i love you and meant it. ruby pounding on the other side of the door, begging aqua to tell her what was going on.

the moon hangs heavy in the sky, the pair walk together -- a small distance of space is left between the two ( by her choice ), hands are held neatly behind her back as she walks. how many oni had he fought off for her now ?? gosh - she'd lost count. a soft sign escapes the lips of the idol - ai couldn't help that they were going after her but still... being forced to rely on someone else like this… it wasn't something she was used to… wasn't something she really could get used to. while she had a manager and coworkers as an idol, she was primarily relying on her own skills. but here… she couldn't. it was frustrating, incredibly frustrating. but even so, she walked with a smile, as though nothing was wrong at all. ❝ haven't eaten anything today… ❞ stretches her arms as she walks, rolling her shoulders. ❝ wanna stop at a place that's cheap ?? ❞

the thought is almost laughable - was there really a holiday for such a simple thing ?? it was the kind of thing she'd hear of as a child, back when she was in the children's home... and yet...

praise from her peers, coworkers and even fans was fairly common - as an idol it's something that you get used to. people will praise people when they deserve it, and they'll do it when they don't just to stay on their good side. the entertainment world was always one that revolved around keeping appearances.

but yuuna wasn't like all the others.

ai didn't need to know her life and backstory to know that much about her. she was a kind and gentle girl, dedicated to the arts, and someone that ai felt comfortable enough to be around.

and here she was telling ai that she was proud of her. the words are enough to bring a smile to the idols face, bringing her hands together with glee.

she's not sure what she did to be the subject of the praise - but she's certainly not going to reject it.

continues her act with a nonchalant laugh, a sprinkle of truth within her lie. she really wasn't the brightest - ai could perform and act... she had street smarts but no book smarts.

❝ if this is about when i didn't tell you who i was-- well, you get why i would have to do that, right ?? ❞ or maybe ai could simply derail the conversation, get him to talk about something else so that he wouldn't bring up what she needed to be honest about.

what other choice did she have ??

they may have gotten closer since the first time they met, but could she really allow herself to be vulnerable around him... ??

in ai's case, she didn't have any plans until the afternoon, so she could afford to sleep in. and even then, it was just a little photoshoot...

...but even if she didn't, what's the harm in basking in this moment for just a little bit longer ??

EVERYTHING IS DARK and ai has to rely on her hearing to gauge what's happening around her. it was quiet now - but before... it was hard to imagine just what going on around her. she kept hidden and quiet during the commotion, and she doesn't want to imagine what may have happened to her if she hadn't. would she have gotten caught up in the crossfire ??

a voice calls back out to her, telling her to stay where she is and promising her that he'll get her out of here. ❝ i'll stay right where i am !! ❞ she replies, voice cheery as ever - even though she's actually feeling nervous on the inside. everything was okay now, right ??

then there is light. it starts out faint, but inches ever closer -- did it belong to the voice that had responded to her pleas ??

ai would find out her answer not long after, as the voice calls out to her again - grabbing her and pulling her onto his back without giving her even a moment to react. lily pads bloom under his feet like magic, guiding the two of them to safety.

❝ i think so... ❞ is the first response as she's asked if she's okay. ❝ might have a few bruises and bumps, but they'll heal with time !! ❞ light laughter rings as she speaks, keeping a positive act all throughout the interaction. she could walk fine, but had no idea on the severity of her injuries otherwise.
