“🔥Aviary - Red Fire South, Acrylic on Three Canvases, 120 x 246”, 2019.⠀ ⠀ @lottemuseum⠀ ⠀ Aviary is a fantasia of Chinese folklore. The composition plays out like a dream, read from right to left, manifesting from the mind of a sleeping monk who is burning up from a fever dream. The Bird Priest is a representation of cormorant fisherman in China, who no longer sustain themselves by fishing with trained birds but instead make their money by posing for pictures dressed in their fishing gear for tourists and photographers. The landscape is rendered like a stage that has been painted by a performing monkey. There is a nostalgia, a dream of obsolescence. A child plays the erhu, creating a soundtrack to the dreamscape, but there are no strings that resonate with music. The graphic elements painted onto the Bird Priest’s scroll are the same pattern that appears in the background of Gaia - Yellow Earth, the stained glass sculpture at the center of Eternal Journey. The scroll can be read as a map or guide for creation, knit from the pulp of the Priest’s noggin nest.“
