JBL Week Day 2: Favorite Relationship(s)
강두 + 상만
SM: Hyung, I think God must really exist.
KD: What?
SM: He must have been so super sorry to you that he sent you Granma.
KD: He must have been really sorry then.
[SM turns away] KD (under his breath): You too...
To Kang Doo, Sang Man is one of the few bright spots in what has otherwise been a dark and painful life, a part of his found family, and for a long time, one of the few people in his lonely life who openly showed him affection.
This relationship was unique, heartwarming and poignant (not to mention one of the sole sources of levity the drama offered us). It made Kang Doo’s character shine that much brighter and sharper while still allowing Sang Man’s character to live and breathe as a fully fleshed-out human and not merely an accessory.
Even more importantly, in Sang Man, Yoo Bo Ra (the writer) does a beautiful job of creating a character who is mentally ‘disabled’ yet also a source of wisdom, strength, and infinite kindness. Not a single one of the characters in this drama comes to us unscathed, but of them all, Sang Man handles hardship with a unique grace and hopefulness that one can’t help but be moved by.
Also, because I pretty much love Kang Doo with everyone:
강두 + 할멈 (Kang Doo + Granny)
강두 + 마리 (Kang Doo and Madame Ma Ri)
Bonus: (Kang Doo + Gag version)

JBL Character Quotes | Ep. 12
MS: [KD: Why didn’t you go?] When you woke up...I wanted for you not to be alone.
KD: I’m glad....Today, that I saw you. I’m glad.
KD: It’s not my money. I have to live diligently until I die paying Halmeom back.
JW: Is it possible to just be sad?... ‘Victims are only sad’ ‘Bereft people are kinder’ ‘ If you have a disability, you’re always weak.’ Aren’t those all preconceptions? People can be poor but greedy, and disabled people can also run scams. Victims can also become aggressors at any time.
IM: How many people in the world could make you smile like this? [If Hyung-nim saw your face right now, she wouldn’t be able to say anything, I think?]
KD: It wasn’t such a big thing after all...happiness.
SM: Hyung, I think God really exists. He must have been so totally sorry towards Hyung that he sent you Grandma.
KD: It would seem…that those things known as ‘chances’ come to me as well. I tried grabbing it. You know, don’t you, that I like Moon Soo?  [JW: I’m not asking about your personal circumstances. Why did you (return to working at) the site?] I’m telling you it’s because of Moon Soo. I’d given up from the beginning because it didn’t seem like I could become a good person in anyone’s estimation like you… but I think, if I try like hell, I might be able to become a good guy to at least one person. I’ve decided to give it a shot.
KD: Where is there a right answer to these things? The only thing we can do is try our best.
KD: [MS: You’ll catch my cold!] Good. Then I’ll...just have to take it all away.
