Trying to Live without Lies

Over the past four years, I have paid very close attention to all the stories surrounding the New York Jets. Part of this is because I spend a good amount of time travelling to work in the car, but also because I am a hopeless Jets fan, consistently drawn into the various story lines from new coaches to Aaron Rodgers. Alas, if there is one thing that the past four years have taught me, it is that most of the talking heads in the media don’t really know what they are talking about and that much of what they put forth is purely conjecture and opinion. Because of how closely I followed the Jets, I had many moments where I realized the commentator did not know what they were talking about or that they didn’t actually watch the game that they were so strongly opining on. One would think that the opposite would be the case, given the platform and money paid to said commentators to provide both an informed and entertaining insight to the masses, such as myself. Alas, after four years, I am convinced that many in sports media are flying by the seat of their pants – cue Stephen A. Smith and Joe Benigno.
That said, I think the sports media reveals a much deeper truth about the media in general, which is that a lot of the talking heads on television or YouTube really don’t know what they are talking about a good portion of the time. Instead, what we often encounter, no matter the ideological bent, is an oversimplification or faulty interpretation of what is being reported. Given my background, I can really see this on display in the realm of theology and Christianity. I have watched media personalities claim Christianity is pro-capitalism or simply a philosophy or pro-Western civilization. I have also witnessed some claim that Christianity is all about love and that Jesus would be accepting of some of our rather decadent and immoral behaviors. In all these, Christianity is oversimplified or mischaracterized yet spoken about in such ways with confidence and the seeming authority of the media apparatus.
For me, both of these examples beg the logical question: where else are these personalities and commentators getting things wrong and/or oversimplifying topics? I think the answer is much more than we realize or like to believe. We have been led to believe that paying attention to the news, being informed, is a good thing and key to maintaining a healthy democracy and culture. But what if these things are actually working in the opposite direction, along with making us more ignorant, more polarized, and less connected to the truth?
A little over a decade ago, I had my first experience with how press releases and news stories often work. A newspaper had published a story about a program I had led, which seemed cool to me. But then I read the story and found myself quoted in it, which was weird because no one had interviewed me or asked for my thoughts on the event. Words were attributed to me that I had not actually spoken. Concerned, I went and spoke with the leader of the organization about it, and that’s when I learned that such was normal when it came to press releases or stories an organization might submit to a local paper or media outlet. I remember thinking, “Well, okay, but that seems rather misleading, and while seemingly benign, they still aren’t my words or words that I would actually speak.” It was a subtle form of misrepresentation, and it just didn’t sit well with me. It was only after this experience that I began to realize that so much of what is put out publicly by organizations and media outlets is more like propaganda than actual news or truth. There is a specific spin to it that is meant to make the subjects of the story look a specific way. As it relates to press releases, what dawned on me was that it was a form of lying and misrepresentation that was socially acceptable. It was as if we were all agreeing to bullshit one another while also vowing to not call one another on the bullshit because it came well packaged. It’s as if we are more concerned with what the public thinks of us in the abstract than who we actually are in the concreteness of everyday life. “Speak/think well of us” is all that matters. To live in such a world is to live in a world that runs on lies and that values the imaginative and performative over reality and the ordinary. It’s like saying, “I’m a habitual liar and philanderer, but that doesn’t matter so long as everyone believes that I am an honest man of integrity who selflessly loves his wife.”
Whether we realize it or not, these things affect us not for the better but for the worse. They draw us out of our present state into another reality that is built on lies. How can that not affect us negatively and even spiritually? We generally don’t think of these things in such ways, but the media apparatus operates with a particular spirituality and power. Simply turning it off is a way to stay sane because much of what we are being told is both likely inaccurate and outside of our control. What is in our control are our immediate environments filled with the regular stresses and challenges of modern life, but also the strange blessings of everyday life, from laughing children to blue skies to a simple evening of relaxation.
