aesthetic & headcanon — skills (vocal) as an idol

summary: after over a decade in the industry, taejin believes his skill-set is as polished as it can get for an idol. no hopes nor dreams to make his talents any better — instead, stagnation inside his current skill level vocally is enough to get by. using the natural talent and the formative time from the trainee years, he’s able to simply “get by” with his caramel voice warnings: none wc: 524

to put it bluntly, taejin’s not hopeless in terms of vocal talents. his mother was actually fairly decent in singing though she never pursued it as a hobby, and that sort of genetics got passed down to him as a young child

thus, when he went into bc for the first time in 2007, and they asked him to audition, they were pleasantly surprised for the most part that the boy could hold more than a tune and actually sounded good without any professional training.

naturally gifted, he has a pretty stable voice that bc really likes to use in all of decipher’s releases much to his displeasure. he comes in second in most line distributions and sometimes even comes in with the most lines, which he would prefer not to have. (but the in-house producers like his voice, so they work with it)

it was enough to get him a lead vocal spot, never main vocal because the main vocal of decipher is on another level? far talented than taejin knows he could ever be even with the adequate training

he’s a tenor, and he’s the lower part of the tenor. does have somewhat of a range considering the year of training meant that bc was polishing his voice and teaching him how to actually use his voice rather than sing mindlessly

after training, he’s able to comfortably span about three octaves, which he now has no trouble using when push comes to shove and the producers instruct him to sing a certain way and avoid certain notes

however, when he gets to the belting portions his voice evidently becomes strained and as much as fans want to support and say he sounds flawless, he doesn’t — you can tell when he’s pushing it

his voice is pretty light, not much robustness. it leads to the thought that he gets nasally, and sometimes it sounds like his voice is almost unstable with breathiness when he does vocal runs.

(not to sound like he’s tooting his own horn), but people still consider him one of the better vocalists of the industry. there’s a unique tone to his voice, and he’s met a lot of fellow idols over the years that have told him they really admire his voice? he gets flustered when he hears this because he knows there’s far better vocalists than him / people who care far more than he ever will.

overall, his voice is really clean? people can tell when he sings because of the distinct tone — fans have related his voice to sound like caramel, and hence why many fans still insist taejin release solo music despite his constant aversions to it.

one thing he’s personally proud of, and will hold to himself on high standards is his ability to sing without backtrack. when decipher’s mr is removed, they still sound stable. always have, always will despite the choreography that have spanned through the years

is singing his hobby? he hasn’t decided that. right now, his aversion to idol-dom and feeling too old has trumped over the question of whether singing is something fun or not with him
