Whatever the reason, Shutara was hardly surprised when the most recent of her gusts spoke up as she worked. Six arms moved in tandem, weaving on and on even as she glanced over her shoulder.Β
βThe same thing you do, of course,β she replied, a hint of amusement curling at the corner of her lips. The Zero Division was not so different from the Thirteen Court Guardians. What was Soul Society but an extension of their King? βI trust you remember the oath you took upon graduation from the academy,β she went on, breathing in time with the steady thunk, thunk, thunk of her loom. βIt is our responsibility to uphold the balance of souls.βΒ
β...And some things are greater than any one person.β Shutara could hardly recall loneliness anymore. Time dulled the edges of even the sharpest emotions, and had a way of softening the years into centuries. Loneliness didnβt touch them here, so close to heaven. Curious, she cocked her head to the side, regarding the Lieutenant with a sweep of her gaze.Β
βWould you not do the same, if it was asked of you?β

ββ¦Are all your subordinates so insolent, Shunsui?β She said after a moment, speaking past the Lieutenant to her Captain. Slowly, Shutara resumed her work, the steady thunk, thunk, thunk of her needle keeping time with their breaths. βWhy, in my day, questions like those would earn you a place in the spirit-sealing pits.β Now, it seemed, even the Soutaichou was beholden to the doubts of his most lowly officers. She tutted her disapproval, snipping the end of an errant thread.Β
βIβve lived a thousand of your lifetimes, girl.β The Seireitei, the Gotei, the very concept of Zanpakuto - Shutara had watched them all come into being. Sheβd seen the Quincies rise, and fall, and rise again; and in that time she had been tasked with tending to the lynchpin of existence. She would not be questioned by a girl who could not speak the name of her own sword.Β
A single arm unfurled to grip Nanaoβs chin, and the weaver coaxed her head up to finally meet her gaze. βTell me: what, exactly, do you believe you know better than meβ¦?β

"taicho hates sloppy work," the young scientist grouses, shifting his weight awkwardly. "we're workin' on better gigai 'n artificial souls for 'em." the labs have changed a good deal since urahara's departure. taichou'd wanted to erase as much as he could of that deplorable man."

"Kirio told me a great deal about her work in that regard." A candy that expels one's soul and replaces it with another...enhancing the properties of the host...truly a revolutionizing invention. "I'm pleased to see her legacy is in good hands."
"Perhaps you can give me a proper tour of your advancements before it comes time for me to depart." Kurotsuchi certainly wouldn't volunteer to do the honors anytime soon.

"CAREFUL, π°πΊπΎπ½, or I'll think you aren't pleased to see me," she warned, wry amusement curling the corner of her lips. "Besides, you should know as well as I that protection of the Soul King begins from the ground up." Shutara emphasized her words with the sharp click of her okobo upon the twelfth division's tiles. "It would be just as much a failure on our part if things down here grew...sloppy."
Not that she was accusing Akon of any such short-comings. And even if she were, the blame would lie squarely upon his Captain' squat little shoulders. So really, he had nothing to fear, and no reason to shy away from the truth. "Tell me β how are things here in the twelfth...?"
