THE cheery, airy ' h i y a ' around which her lips have already formed dies down in her throat at the sight of him ; rose stops in her skips, nearly trips over her own feet ( notes not s k i p towards the doctor next time ). there's something ... OFF here. not by much - but at the same time by an outrageousous amount. - there's a long , good l o o k before she breaks the silence. " well. don't you look - " don't say old, don't say old, anything, just don't say old " .... TIRED. "

the telltale wheezing of the tardis materialising has her nearly drop her cup of tea - she never know when to expect it. this time it's been two days, maybe three ? time is funny concept, 'specially to a full-time traveler. time-traveler, too. she's grabbed her backpack - always packed, ready to go - and has pressed a kiss goodbye to jackie's cheek before her mother can even open her mouth to complain. out the door, she flies down the stairs, nearly tripping over her scarf as she wraps it 'round on the way down. no time to lose !
even after a year, she's still filled with the same excitement. she wonders if it'll ever cease, suspects not. out the front door and there it is, in all its glory, the blue box. her second home. or is that title reserved for the person who owns it ?
" hiya, stranger. " beaming grin, she feels like she's glowing, skips the last couple of steps. " long time no see. "

❛ come with me, and don’t ask any questions. it’s urgent. ❜
LOOK, it's not like she was off sick when they held that ' stranger danger ! ' assembly in year seven. it's just - travelling with an extraterrestrial, you pick up a few things. ' don't wander off' , ' don't touch that shiny green stuff ' , ' more often than not, the prime minister will be an alien ' - by far the most important rule is a simple one : if someone tells you to RUN, just do it. sure, she might regret this later, but right now there's a 50/50 chance there's some SLITHEEN right around the corner ( she's not taking that risk, thank you very much )
albeit still a little apprehensive, rose just nods, following in the stranger's footsteps as fast as possible while not breaking into a full-on jog. the ' no questions ' rule, however, is quickly forgotten. " you're UNIT, right ? " - remembering she's not really supposed to ask, rose rephrases - " i mean, you look like you're unit. - could be torchwood, too, of course. but you don't really look like the torchwood type, y'know what i mean ? so i reckon you're unit, and you're ... taking me to headquarters ? right ? "

" What's so funny? " He's standing there bewildered, blinking at her with wide, innocent eyes and a complex device sitting in his left - of course, he fails to notice the twig protruding from his mess of hair. Abseiling forestry isn't the easiest! He thought he did very well, thank you.
EYES narrowed, lips pressed into a fine line, she's trying her hardest not to erupt into laughter. that twig's blending right in with his hair, it is ! ( it's not even THAT funny, she has to admit - it's the way he's so absolutely clueless that makes it hilarious ) ' nine hundred years old ', ' last of the time lords ',' the oncoming storm ' rose tries her darndest, but the corners of her lips twist up on their own accord. " oh, nothing. nothing. " got her gaze focused on the floor now. just don't look, don't look. " it's just - you look a bit like my year five geography teacher right about now. spittin' image, actually. " ( this is where she takes pity on the poor guy, hand coming up to disentangle the solitary twig from the nest he calls hair ) " he went along on a day trip to banstead woods once. missed a step, went face down into a bush. when he came back out he looked like he was part bush himself, he did. "

CAN'T say this is the weirdest thing she's ever seen, but it's not exactly typical, either. there's an awkward, oddly nervous smile tugging at her lips - hands a little clammy, too, rose begins to fiddle with the zipper of her worn-out track jacket. ( it seems SILLY to be wearing it now, for whatever reason ) they've gone past the initial shock stage. something tells her the person opposite poses no threat, either, and distress makes way for curiosity. " so ... " is what she manages once she's shaken off her momentary stupor. staring at HERSELF, or a version of herself, rose finds herself unsure, almost self-concious. ( pun not intended ) what comes out next is precisely a manifestation of nineteen-year-old-self-conciousness " ... this is what my hair looks like from the back, huh ?"
