Thus far, Homecoming was running rather smoothly. They showed up together in their matching green, turning many heads as they became the envy of the entire room. Just as it should be. They got their photos taken for the yearbook, which were going to look great once they were developed, and now they were going to share a dance to some song that was definitely more Alice's taste than his, but it was fun nonetheless. This was more her night anyway, even if he himself would earn a crown as well.
Steve lets her pull him out onto the floor, trying to keep up pace and in rhythm with her movements. It's a more high energy song than the usual slow dancing he does with girls but it's somehow more personal with her. More... fun, which was a weird feeling to have considering they weren't actually dating.
As the song starts to near its conclusion though, they both ease up in their movements to adjust any out of place hairs or wrinkles in formal wear because as soon as the song is over, the music cuts altogether and it's time for the King and Queen announcements. Alice slips her hand into his and he gives hers an encouraging squeeze, all the while trying to ignore the usual warmth of contact her touch seemed to ignite.
Tumblr media
Sheryl starts to announce the winners and he's fully expecting to hear Alice's name in first place... Except that isn't what happens. She's the runner up. There's a slight drop in his stomach as he turns, shocked, toward the stage where Tina was practically bouncing up and down as she received a crown that didn't belong to her. Somehow she had managed to weasel her way into the winner's bracket and steal it right from under Alice.
Still shocked by the turn of events, Steve slowly turns to look at Alice. She's smiling and clapping for Tina but he can sense her disappointment over the loss. It's just a mask she's wearing because to let that slip would be a show of weakness. He knew she was far too proud for that, especially in front of Tina. He wants to say something to her but he's at a loss for words and once he decides he should, his name is being called... For King.
Quickly throwing on his own mask for the crowd, Steve smiles as he strolls toward the stage to be crowned next to his ex. As if this whole situation wasn't awkward enough, the King and Queen were expected to share a dance now, which seems to please Tina a lot. And of course it would, because as far as everyone knows, him and Alice are dating. As if stealing her crown wasn't enough, she would also get to dance with her date and if Tina thought she was going to further humiliate Alice then she had another thing coming.
As soon as the song starts playing and Tina makes a move to take his hand on the stage, he takes a step back from her with a casual grin on his face. "Sorry. I'm taken." That seems to wipe the grin clean off her face, especially as he turns to step off the stage and leave her hanging in front of everyone.
Making his way back to Alice, he murmurs, "Want to step outside for a bit?"

❛ just let me sleep for five more minutes. ❜
A meme forever lost to the hoard
Tumblr media
Morning light peaking in through the half-open curtain, Steve slowly begins to stir in his sleep. He was never really a morning person, usually waking up miserable and groggy with his body and brain protesting the mere thought of leaving to leave the comfort of his bed. The second part was still true. He was far too comfortable to even entertain the thought of getting up but he wasn't crabby. Wasn't miserably tired either. Just weirdly cozy and happy. Blissful, even.
Breathing a contented sigh, he shifts slightly with the intention to lazily roll over onto his side when he registers the extra weight on his chest. Brown eyes flutter open to investigate the road block...
And the previous night comes back to him in very vivid detail when he realizes the head resting on his bare chest belongs to Alice. The party, that stupid song, the drive back to her place and the trail of clothes they left leading up to her room. Her lips on his, their hands everywhere, the sounds she made while they... Oh God.
"Oh, shit..." The former bliss fades with alarming speed as slight panic settles in and he shakes Alice with the hand she wasn't currently laying on, trying to rouse her. "Alice, wake up, we have a problem."
❛ just let me sleep for five more minutes. ❜ Her response lacks the same urgency of his, stirring only slightly before she cozies back into him.
This was bad. They had crossed the line into forbidden territory here. "Alice!" He tries again, this time more firmly as he raises his voice to convey the urgency of the situation. "We screwed up."

Alice grins at him, trying her damnedest to keep from picturing him in a leather jacket at this very moment. “I have all kinds of things in my closet,” she tells him. “I’m sure I can make it happen.”
Tumblr media
If Alice had pants tight enough to resemble Sandy's at the end of Grease then he had never seen them. Or just hadn't been paying attention before. "Want to help me find a leather jacket then? We really need to shine at that party and I think you have a better eye for those kind of details."

NONVERBAL RP STARTERS
🔥 pull my muse down by the collar/by their clothes - in a sexy way | in reference/continuation of ( x )
Coming back to her house after their fake date had been a huge mistake. Between the movie, which had a number of scenes heavily leaning into some very spicy romance, her falling asleep on his damn thigh, and the well meaning (but not at all helpful in his current state of bothered) offer to stay the night, Steve felt like he was literally on fire and one small touch away from being completely consumed by it.
As if that weren't already bad enough, he just goes and makes it worse by agreeing to stay the night. "It is late..." He answers in as normal a voice as he can manage. Standing up in hopes that putting a little distance between them will be helpful, she follows in suit and they start to head upstairs. All the while, he's giving himself a little talk down. Steve would be staying in the guest room, which was good because there would be no temptation with her sleeping in a completely different room all the way down the hall. It would almost be like he wasn't sleeping over at all.
By the time they made it upstairs to the guest room, he was already feeling a little better about the whole arrangement. At least he was until Alice went to the closet to grab him an extra blanket because that was when everything went wrong. She was struggling to reach it off the top shelf and when Steve moved to help her, she finally grabbed hold of it and went to turn around... And turned straight into him. Chest to chest. They briefly made eye contact and then they went for it at the same time; lips crashing into each other with a hunger so strong, it was all consuming.
Tilting his head as he deepens the kiss, Steve wraps an arm around her waist as he guides her back toward the bed, acting purely on instinct at this point. There was a barely even a coherent thought in his head at this point, he just knew that he wanted her and wanted her bad. Gently shoving her down onto the bed, Alice reacts with equal force as she reaches up grabbing him by the collar of his shirt and pulling him down on top of her. Breathing heavy and heart rate through the roof, his mouth eagerly seeks hers out again, tongue tracing the inner outline of her lips.
If Steve was on fire before, he felt like he was in a pit of lava now. Briefly pulling away from her to yank his shirt up over his head, he quickly returns his lips to hers, lingering there for a bit before he starts to trail off toward her neck. Meanwhile his hand is resting at her waist, slowly inching up her shirt and fingers lightly brushing against her skin. As soon as his hand reaches the lining of her bra though, it's like a bucket of ice water is thrown over both of them.
"Shit!" He breathes out as the two of them quickly separate, reality dawning on both. A moment ago they were grabbing at each other seeing if they could possibly get any closer and now they couldn't put enough distance there. "Shit." He swears again more quietly, scouring the floor for his shirt and swiftly pulling it back over his head. This whole fake dating and then that stupid movie... Yeah, that had been a bad idea.

❛ you didn't hear a word of what i just said, did you? ❜
A meme that's been lost to the hoard
The party was going smoothly thus far. Steve had made his grand entrance with Alice on his arm, the duo receiving a multitude of compliments for their chosen costumes and how movie accurate they were. His natural charm was tuned up to the ten as he worked through the party, quietly and subtly helping to win back the favor toward Alice so she could reclaim her crown. It was all a misunderstanding, after all. Alice had never stolen him from Tina, she was just jealous and bitter following their break-up and blew it wildly out of proportion. That was their story whenever anyone asked or brought it up and it appeared to be working like a charm.
Until something shifted within the atmosphere of the party. He could feel it like a sixth sense, attention drifting away from whatever Alice was saying as he scans the room and finds they were no longer at the center of the attention. That's when he hears the whooping and cheering coming from just out front.
❛ you didn't hear a word of what i just said, did you? ❜ Alice accuses when she realizes he had drifted off.
"You can recap it for me later." He retorts before moving toward the front door to see what all the excitement was about. Stepping out onto the porch where most of the party now resided, he quickly had his answer when he spots the new guy mid-keg stand and Tommy, his own best friend, right by him and egging him on. Steve feels an anger build inside him at the sight, mouth twitching in annoyance as he crosses his arms. "Are you kidding me?" He scoffs, unimpressed by the whole display. "It's like they've never seen a goddamn keg-stand before. I literally just did one an hour ago!"
As Billy finishes, he's met with a round of cheers and... Tina?! He watches in disbelief as she wraps her arms around his torso and they make their way back toward the house with Tommy practically salivating at his heels. As he draws closer with his pack of groupies, he locks eyes with Steve and the atmosphere grows incredibly tense with the hostility radiating between the two. This... was going to be a problem.
"Harrington, you met Billy yet?" Tommy leaps in with the introductions, either oblivious to the tension between the two or wholly enjoying it. Probably the latter, which he seems to confirm two seconds later. "Looks like you might have some competition here, buddy."
"As if." He retorts before Tina, who had the most annoyingly smug little grin on her face, states that she wants another beer and the group move past them to go back into the house. Steve watching them go and absolutely fuming.
"Do you believe this shit?" There's no way this asshole was posing an actual threat on the popularity scale just because he was new. Anyone could move to a new town. It wasn't that impressive yet everyone was acting like he had just stepped off the red carpet. Rolling his eyes, he steps off the porch and starts to walk away. "Whatever. I'm going to smoke."

George was actually supposed to be home this weekend and she wasn't sure how Steve would feel if they bumped into each other after last time... Which she certainly hadn't thought about since. Nope, not even a little. Regardless, it'd be better to just avoid the whole thing. "Around noon's good, but I'll walk over to your place to meet you."
Tumblr media
Steve doesn't even really question why she would rather walk to his house than have him pick her up because he definitely hadn't forgotten that night at her place. The one where her brother decided to come home at the worst possible time. He was pretty sure he'd never be able to look George in the eye again after that one.
"Yeah, okay. Sounds good."

Alice flashes a big, triumphant grin. "Cross my heart, I won't let it go to my head," she fibs. "And the store's in Marion, so not that far. A very doable day trip. Saturday?"
Tumblr media
"Marion's not too bad a drive." He agrees, having been there more than a few times for clothes shopping among other things. "Saturday's fine. I'll pick you around noon?"

“Oh, I know exactly where to take you for that, so I can definitely help you,” she replies. “But the store I’m thinking of sells real clothes from the 50s. Promise you won’t complain about it being second-hand?”
Tumblr media
"Why does it have to be second-hand? Why can't we just go to an actual clothing store that sells new shit?" He retorts, already complaining at the thought of wearing someone else's discarded jacket. "If they're selling used then it better not have any holes or tears in it."

“Of course at the end,” Alice insists, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “Though Sandy’s yellow dress at the dance is cute… Do you own a leather jacket?”
Tumblr media
"Just checking." He states, noting the duh! edge to her tone. "I... Do not. But I can get one, no big deal. I need to buy a black shirt and pants anyway." His wardrobe tended to contain more blues and greens so he didn't really own much in black. "What about you? You got all that just laying around your closet for your costume?"

“—Are we driving to the dance together or are we meeting there?” Alice asks, pushing her pancakes around her plate. “Aunt Carol said she’d do my hair, so I’m getting ready at Tyler’s.”
Tumblr media
After what almost happened between them last night, breakfast was awkwardly quiet this morning. Neither opting to talk about it as they ate the pancakes she made for them in near complete silence. When Alice did finally speak, there was no mention of it and he was rather grateful for that because he still hadn't stopped thinking about it and definitely didn't want to talk about it.
"We can go together." He tells hers, cutting another piece of pancake with his fork and avoiding direct eye contact. "Special occasion and all that so it's a different set of rules." No one would bust his balls for that the way they would if he started driving her to school every day. "Just give me his address before Homecoming so I know where I'm picking you up."

Nonverbal RP Starters
🐈 Lean against my muse’s side
Their first week of fake dating went well. Maybe even a little too well since they appeared to have no trouble at all selling it to their peers. That was mainly due to the fact that every small couple-y interaction they planned somehow got unintentionally blown out of proportion. Holding hands as they walked together would turn into a game of how close could they physically get without actually merging into one and an innocent 'I'll see you later' type kiss would turn into a whole make-out session.
Needless to say, Steve was struggling by the time Saturday rolled around and he was taking Alice out on their 'date' to Benny's. A few people they knew were bound to be here so it was necessary to keep the ruse going until they could mutually 'agree' to break things off and stay friends. Half the problem was how carried away they seemed to get, but he was more worried about later when they were supposed to go back to her house. Alone. Pushing that to the back of his mind, he tries to focus on getting through this fake date without losing it first.
Finding a booth near the middle, because sitting closer to the back was not a good idea, Steve lets Alice slip into the booth first before sliding in next to her. "We should probably share a milkshake," he suggests as he looks over the menu. "It'll give off that couple-y vibe. Maybe a single order of fries to share too."
He closes the menu with their order in mind, quickly glancing around the restaurant to see if they recognized anyone. There were a few people they knew, including his own friends who were just making their way inside. "Shit, it's Tommy and Carol." He points out, nodding in their general direction as they stepped through the door.
Immediately without a thought, Steve throws his arm around Alice's shoulders as she leans heavily into his side. Desperately trying to ignore the warmth of her closeness and the intoxicating scent of her hair filling his senses. However, it's in record time as Carol spots them, pointing them both out to Tommy as they make their way over.
"Hey, guys," Steve greets casually, as if unbothered by the fact that Alice was pressed against his side and making it hard to think straight. "You two on a date as well?"

“Because stores that sell new shit aren’t going to sell anything authentic unless we go to a store that sells gear to bikers,” Alice explains. “I am wounded you think I’d take you some place that sells raggedy things. Truly.”
Tumblr media
"Yeah, well, at least they wouldn't be selling someone's thirty year old mustard-stained jacket for like $500 or however much old authentic shit costs." He didn't think he was being unreasonable. However, he makes a face at her as she states she's wounded he would think that of her. "Okay, first of all, that's dramatic. Second... Sorry. I trust your judgment completely."

“What about Sandy and Danny from Grease? Is that cool enough?”
Tumblr media
"Well, that depends... Are we talking the finale outfits?" Because no offense to Miss Sandy but the goody two-shoes look didn't fit his definition of cool. Also he was maybe picturing Alice in those tight ass black pants from the last performance of the film and liking it too much.
Damn it. Knock it off, Steve.
"Because I can get behind that. I think we'd kill it, actually." Especially because no one did Halloween better than the King and Queen of Hawkins High.
