veronica’s breath caught in her throat, an overwhelming swell of sadness stirring within her chest. “don’t say that.” she mumbled, the familiar pang of heartbreak stinging with every word. getting attached was never a part of her master plan; it went against each line of the finely tuned script that veronica centered every aspect of her life around. ( and yet  here yael was anyway, bearing her soul and blowing the whole thing out of the water. ) “please. don’t fucking say that.” the blonde repeated with a shake of her head, the urgent please a word that rarely found its way into veronica’s vocabulary. glistening whiskey hues silently searched the other woman’s face, veronica forcing down the growing lump in her throat with a gulp. “you and me… this whole thing… it’s supposed to mean nothing, remember?”  she sniffled, features hardening into an unreadable mask. “and that’s how it’s gotta stay, yael. that’s how it’s going to stay. we’re nothing.” she reminded her, the callousness in her words putting yael back where veronica, in her mind, needed her: at a distance. “do your searching somewhere else. you won’t find whatever is that you’re looking for with me.”
