you would not believe the amount of grief i went through for her clothes. it turns out that its really hard to have a guy wear dark colors with red accents and put a military theme over that (percent of military expenditures of the melkarthian union: 27%) and not have her look really ominous

okay so you know how guys drawing bible stories didn’t know what their subjects actually looked like so they gave them symbols to distinguish them? like st peter is always depicted with keys. well that’s mary and her dagger

it’s specifically a dagger because of the connotations of deception/betrayal/bravery and also the symbolic ambiguity itself, since she was converted slightly less voluntarily than the other melkarthians

also she’s always in dark and warm colors. dark for the same reasons as the dagger and for contrast with ahkanishia who i will draw in lighter colors, and warm because mary is. you know. protective. also as opposed to ahki who loves the rest of the union but would Not take a bullet for them the way mary would………. one could call them foils. i primarily think about them as juxtaposed to each other since they have the same job (be the military) but they go about it in different ways and their circumstances and histories and relationship with the rest of the union are very much opposites. youll see what i mean when i actually go redesign ahki and i guess im calling her ahki now…….. because i love her and i love them together and now i want to draw them doing something vaguely homoerotic
