at the beginning of the show sokka is continually establishing how normal he is. he calls katara weird and freakish. hes like “im just a guy with boomerang,” “i’m a simple guy with simple needs,” etc........ who’s gonna tell him

#in fairness #sokka #only thinks he’s regular because the war has stripped him of his entire identity & personhood #in any other circumstance he would be well aware of just how much of a little freak he is #and he wouldn’t care because he’d be too busy practicing for the IMO #(by which I mean the international math olympiad. not the international maritime organization. but yeah sure that too)#and yes before anyone says smth I’m aware it’s bc he sees himself positioned outside of the heroic narrative conventions that katara is all #too willing to embrace and he just can’t quite get behind the idea of being on an actual proper Quest #he’s just a curmudgeonly old man trapped in a teenagers body #and i see that. and i respect that #but still.
