we’ve all heard of polio, a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by poliovirus, that ran rampant through the world before it was eradicated (in the west) with the introduction of a vaccine in the 1950s. enough time has passed that most of us, and most of our parents, have grown up without knowing people who survived polio.
what I bet you didn't know about is something called Post-Polio Syndrome. it occurs in more than half of people who survive poliovirus, and it occurs decades later. year after people have lived through polio, years after they have “recovered,” they begin to struggle. they begin to decline. they experience pain and weakness and loss of function. they develop new disabilities, and see old disabilities worsen. and there is no cure, only management.
That’s what happens post poliovirus. It happens bc poliovirus causes lifelong damage, the extent of which is only revealed decades later. We are among the first generations to grow up not knowing people who live with the longterm consequences of poliovirus.
We will be among the first to find out what Post-Corona Syndrome looks like.
#not a shitpost#serious post#coronavirus tw#covid tw#ask to tag#very serious post#i want to be VERY clear:#over the next few decades we are going to see a HUGE rise in disabilities#for the next 40-80 years a huge portion of our population will be living with the longterm effects of coronavirus#right now we are only beginning to discover the potential longterm effects#(which include pain & weakness & fatigue & difficulty thinking & HEARTH DAMAGE)#there is no telling how long these things will last. but it is not unlikely they will reoccur and worse decades down the line#and there will be plenty more that we don't know about yet. simply bc this virus is NEW#so we will be the first people to experience its aftermath#all this to say: we will need some INCREDIBLY MAJOR CHANGES to our healthcare & social & disability support systems#and also if you haven't gotten covid yet--please please PLEASE do EVERYTHING you realistically can to lower your risks#yes unless you have pre-existing health issues you will *probably* survive#BUT SURVIVAL DOES NOT MEAN RECOVERY#i repeat: SURVIVAL DOES NOT MEAN A FULL RECOVERY#You could easily have health issues for the rest of your life because of covid#that's something you *can* live with but it will cost you time and money and pain. i recommend avoid it if you can
