alex had previously had the honors of forgoing several missions with the tactical canine by the name of syd. he was quite fond of the german shepard, truth be told. how could he not be? look at her little face. and, if anything, she deserved all the praise in the world. she does what she’s trained to do and does it with the up most proficiency. doesn't that just make her the goodest girl ever?

the cute blindness is probably what dulls his usual observational skills as he bends good knee to get down to dog level, gloved hands fluffing up the hair around her collar and lips babbling hushed praises. doesn't notice how soap goes quiet behind him. doesn't notice how scottish chatter is now nothing but tense silence broken with a choked 'i like dogs.' it's what finally gets alex to look up, hands still against soft fur as blue meets blue.

oh. he looks just like alex's sister used to get, their mutual fear of canines now blaringly obvious. the man's heart trembles. for johnny 'soap' mactavish. for his sister. fuck, he misses her.

"s alright," alex says with a smile, standing once more to face the other. metal and flesh planted firmly shoulder length to put himself between syd and soap. blocking sight lines. "i can like 'em enough for the both of us." fingers, as kind as they were to the canine, apply gentle pressure to soap's elbow to lead him away. "'sides, i'm holding her up from doing her job. we'll skedaddle."
