Hey! Aspiring fanfic writer here; I was wondering if you could talk a bit about your writing/editing process and how long it all takes.

Welp, roughly the same extremely long amount of time it takes to actually answer an ask, tbh 🙃

So...I only know how my brain works, and I can only tell you what works for me might not work for you, and that's OK. I'm breaking into two separate bits, because I almost never do writing and editing at the same time.

And as far as a timeline, honestly it just depends. On life factors, what my hormones are doing at the time (jfc like the week before my period, I have zero creativity, motivation, or attention span), if I'm having trouble with a particular scene, if I'm getting consistent positive feedback (yes, I can totally admit that I write faster when I know a particular reviewer is following along with every update), etc.

WRITING:

First, you gotta just...be fixated, I guess. Particularly if it's an AU, I sit with it for a long time before I ever write a word. I go over scenes, think about how the world changes, what stays the same, what *has* to stay the same to keep the characters true to their canon personalities. I sit with the characters for a long time, too--not just the main characters, but the supporting cast, too. In order to predict someone's future, you have to know their past. Most of our present actions are actually reactions to past events, when you think about it. The better you know your version of the character, the easier every other aspect of writing will be. I don't know how it is for other people, but I don't ever "feel" like I'm writing. I feel like I'm "witnessing", and the characters are simply doing whatever they wish. (***this is gonna be a thing during the editing process, too, so hang on to that)

Then once I have a general idea, I choose a title. Generally, I do not even start a word document until I have a proper title to put on it. The title is part of the theme and aesthetic to me, and it grounds me in the overall arc.

Once that's done, it's time for outlining. I generally wait until I feel this weird almost tingling in my left arm (weirder still bc I'm right handed) and I'm practically vibrating with a need to WRITE THIS STORY NOW. Then I put on some Bear McCreary (honestly, any videogame soundtrack will do, as they are literally designed to help you maintain focus and keep pace) and fucking go to town. For me, it helps to do this with pen and paper, so that I can go back up and squiggle little notes in the margin, rearrange the order, etc, far faster than I could on a computer.

Important note: the outline is not the end-all be-all. Some things don't make it to the final print. Some minor storylines get tossed or characters simply...take a different path than I expect. I will continue re-writing and updating the outline as I go along. On average, I usually have 5-8 outlines per story, and they're often 3-10 pages long. I also have a posted outline, which is a log of all the scenes that did make it to the final product. 

Then, it's the actual writing, at long last. I have found that I write best at the start of my day, before the noise and static of daily life comes in. So I wake up around 5am and spend 90minutes writing before beginning my workday routine. I have the Word app on my phone and may continue adding bits in throughout the day at work, if I get a moment. However, after 5pm my brain is usually fried and no more creativity happens. On weekends, I try to have one morning where I "sleep in" til 6am, and then write until at least 10am, sometimes 2pm, if I can get away with it.

The hardest part still is knowing when to transition and when to skip to the next chapter/scene/whatever. This is like...zero percent helpful, but I liken it to Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's definition of pornography: "I know it when I see it." It may seem like a scene is circling, and sometimes it means you gotta leave the room a bit earlier bc the scene has already served its purpose. Other times, it means ya gotta stay with it a bit longer, because there's something the character is trying to say. Give them patience, and give yourself patience, too. Explore the scene and its dynamics. You won't know til you know and even then, sometimes you won't be entirely sure. That's ok, too. Part of the process. Remember editing will happen and you can decide then (hell, you can literally re-edit after it's been published, I've done that before too and added a note on the next chapter for any readers who might have read the first version 🤷🏻‍♀️ not ideal but still functional).

EDITING:

I do simple edits (spelling, grammar, etc) just about every morning as I reread what I wrote the day before, which is a refresher course for the day's writing session. But big "real" editing generally doesn't happen until right before posting.

Now, here's the ***issue from writing: sometimes, something just "doesn't work" in a scene. Again, you'll know it when you see it. The words a character is saying feels clunky. The pacing feels off. Something just...ain't right. More often than not, it means either I haven't truly sat with a character long enough to know their true motivations/backstory, or I am not giving characters the proper time/space/impediment to make the actions or say the things they're currently making/saying. I'm trying to force the flow, rather than letting it ebb and breathe when it needs to.

Absolute ProTip: You spent HOURS writing this scene. It's got some REALLY GOOD moments and lines in it. It doesn't work but you can't just delete it. It's your LIFE. I struggle with this A LOT, and I have found a solution: create a second "outtakes" document to cut and paste those scenes into. Sometimes I still keep moments or bits of dialog. Sometimes I later use bits in a later scene. Sometimes I never look at it again but I still feel secure in knowing that if I wanted to go back and use the original scene instead, I totally can. I don't think I've actually ever gone back to the original, tbh, but it reduced my anxiety about deleting the scene and starting over.

So back to the scene that doesn't work. I take it apart, figure out *at what exact point* it stops working, then work back up a few lines to see where the shift actually begins. More often than not, it's because I'm having characters express their feelings in ways they actually wouldn't. (people very very very rarely actually say what they're thinking/feeling, and you have to relay it in other ways). So I have to keep the internal monologue of what they're actually feeling/thinking, while figuring out how that actually translates via tone, body language, and what they do and don't say.

The "something ain't working stage" can take LITERAL WEEKS. I sometimes have to walk away for awhile, or tackle it only on days when I know I have hours upon hours to truly work on it. I keep circling back around, and eventually, the knot works itself out. Persistence, and insistence that "good enough" isn't actually good enough, are key. (this is why you have to fixated on the story you want to tell--because some days, it's going to take every ounce of that obsession to keep you going and keep you on the track of telling the story you wanted to tell, rather than settling or switching to an easier tack)

Sometimes, editing is a breeze. I don't change much, I may go a little more into the character's inner world here or there. Once you've been doing this for awhile, you'll just know when a story hits all its marks--and you'll also know when it's not, when it could be more or do more, and you can figure out how to get it there. There isn't a precise formula for it, it's more like cooking without an actual recipe to follow--a dash here, a bit there, you'll know it when you taste it.

And I'll leave you with this unsolicited bit: just write. Write often, write about everything, write what makes YOU passionate and happy, and absolutely write for yourself. Edit the fuck out of it, if you need to. Get a beta reader, if you need to. Get someone to just bounce ideas off, if you need to. And don't post it until you're truly ready and it's something you genuinely want to share. If someone gives constructive criticism, take in on the chin and move on (keep the notes, if you think they're valid, and toss em if you don't--you'll never be everyone's style of writer, so know that sometimes, people just won't be the target audience). Know that you'll grow and you'll learn and you'll find your own voice and like any skill, you'll develop a second nature about it--all those parts where I say "you'll know it when you see it" or "you'll feel it" absolutely come from spending a literal lifetime (28 years) writing stories, and thirteen years of writing fanfic in particular. It's ok if you don't see it or feel it right away. It takes practice. And you will have an audience at every skill level, no matter what (finding that audience? different story altogether...).

All totaled, this process can take anywhere from 3months to over a year. Stories are like children, I've found: they each develop at their own pace, and some may need more time and assistance than others. But they're still pretty wonderful. (except the bratty stories. they're the worst 🙄)

Hello! Hope you're doing well! How was that dive into Panthers' marketing?

Hi, friend. I am doing alright. Hope you are well!

So, I had fun exploring the Panthers and their marketing but midway through I decided to change up my focus. I’ll write all about it under the cut bc I know I am going to go off!

ok first thing is first. I looked around their NHL site, Instagram, and twitter. I know they have a lot of accounts on various social media sites but I was just focused on what I use often. While just looking around I realized that I think it’s better to focus on the whole team as a “brand.” By this I mean, each team is their own entity and they control what they post and what they show, and how they come off to their fans and spectators. Now, I’m no marketing major or public relations major, or communications major. I am just a person with their journalism degree wanting to work in marketing/communications/social media etc. (But I still think it’s important to show what I expect from teams and what I hope they bring to their “brand”) From the various networking events I have been to hosted by the Kings I have learned one really important thing, teams like to hire people who are not big hockey fans, people who are at most casual fans so that they can help curate what non-fans want to see to make them fans. Personally, I think that’s kind of dumb bc you should be able to cater to both. But that’s beside the point, sorry. 

So, going off of that. The Panthers tend to have an approach to their socials for the most part that caters to their existing fans. As someone coming in knowing some players and knowing they’re a team, I don’t see them doing anything differently to bring in new fans. Especially in Florida where the easiest and most successful marketing trick to get new fans is to have food deals when you win a game, score a certain amount of goals, etc. My brother lives in Florida, he lives close to where the Orlando Solar Bears play, and they are my favorite ECHL team. He has no clue who is on the team or what the ECHL is but he became a fan of theirs bc they have a pizza deal each time they win and he wants cheap food bc he’s a young adult living on his own. All of a sudden, he’s downloading their schedule, checking their social media, and keeping tabs on them just for a pizza code. One of my best friends likes the Kings, she’s now just a causal fan but she had no clue about the AHL or the Ontario Reign. I dragged her to a game and she had fun, but she always came back with me bc the beer was so cheap and she liked to mix hockey and drinks, and at least I was there to look out for her. I know I got off course and that food deals won’t make a lifelong fan which is what teams want, but that’s a good place to start. 

Of course, I have yet to watch one of their games on their tv station. That’s a whole different thing to approach. I love tv broadcasts, I love the Kings broadcasters, the pregame show, the post-game show. I know the ins and outs of how it all works bc I work in something similar, I am a huge production nerd. I know how the Fox Sports broadcasts go regardless of region. So, I know what I am going to be looking for tomorrow when I watch them play Nashville and tv broadcasts I feel are the best marketing tool bc that’s the first introduction to the team besides social media. You give the viewers a foundation, get them interested, and find a way to make them stick around after the game. One of my favorite thing anyone has ever done is the viewer or fan tweets/feedback etc. EVERYONE does that, it’s a quick and easy way to get fans engaged and I am hoping they do that. Another thing I like are little feature stories, exploring a players history or a milestone in a quick little video either for the broadcast or online on socials but maybe that’s just a thing I am into bc it’s one of my favorite things to watch and work on but again, that’s beside the point. 

Let me work back to the social media posts thing from earlier. I feel like their approach is to show you players as if you’re well established, but I am all for making a connection with the audience. I think some teams do a really good job of that with fun segments with players, and behind-the-scenes footage of players warming up or skating at practice. I think fan engagement is the biggest and most important aspect of a team's brand. I know a lot of teams do that and some do it really well. The Sabres, for example, sometimes have a thing where they ask who people want videos of during practice and people will send in names and they post videos of said players. They’ve done it twice this season and I’ve always had fun. I think if anything, the bubble last summer should’ve shown these teams how essential social media platforms are for fans and just bc a huge portion of the league is allowing fans in to watch games doesn’t mean they shouldn’t keep engaging with them online. 

I think I have to keep watch over the Panthers for like a week or so to gather more information bc this is all based off of two days of checking out their socials and that doesn’t give me the best sampling of their work. I also am in no way bashing anyone who works for them bc I can imagine that things are not easy and they’ve probably had to make cuts and I am fearful that one person is doing the job of many right now and I know that’s a thing with a lot of teams and leagues right now. And again, I am not a marketing person and I am not a communications person and I could be completely wrong in what I think people want and what teams think people want and I am just clueless and will never be hired by a team ever. lol I will say I do like what they posts on Instagram, a lot of what I wrote on here was based on their Instagram stories but I do like their posts, and photos and especially their graphics. I think they’re made so well. So there is a bright side to all of this.

Alright, that’s it. Sorry this got incredibly long, I did not map this out and instead started free writing and this is where I ended up and I guess I’ll have another update in a week or so once I’ve watched over the Panthers a bit more. Anyways, thanks for reading!!!

y’know the one thing I hated while I was doing my arts degree, and still hate after having graduated from it, is the condescending statement/belief from people that “oh why didn’t you just do a more useful degree like maths or science???? and not your useless bullshit mickey mouse arts degree, which was never intended to give anyone jobs outside of teaching, anyway!” or some other horrendous bullshit, such as: “why didn’t you just stay with communication & media studies and complete the marketing & PR major???? you would’ve had a job after all of the unpaid internships you do throughout the course!” or whatever. (media and communications is abbreviated to m&cs further down in this post, just an fyi).

but, meredith. do you know that even people with science & maths degrees struggle to find meaningful work that’s related to their degrees? do you know that some of those people will turn to teaching anyway just because they feel like there’s nothing else that they can do??? do you know that some people (mainly me and probably quite a few others) just can’t handle maths past like idk year 6 level??? I would’ve been completely and utterly fucked if I even tried to set foot in first year uni science or maths subjects. even though some of the content did interest me.... (also there’s the fact that my handwriting wasn’t good enough for diagrams etc etc in maths & science- but that’s a whole other topic not for this post).

like I had to totally skip out of psychology/sociology and even the PR major, bc they required you to do statistics subjects.... where no matter what level of study I would’ve/could’ve done for those subjects, i would’ve still failed them spectacularly because my mind really struggles with processing and working with numbers. but that’s besides the point.

hey earl, do you know some people simply do not suit particular fields of “real world” or “practical” study areas like business subjects? trust me. I tried that one sem of marketing 101 and intro to management/ business communications in first year. and you know what I found? that my mind just could not take the complete and utter dryness of the content of marketing theory and, again, numbers. and that’s despite the earnest encouragement of my tutor, who thought I had a knack for marketing. i literally almost fucking died in that business communications subject... even though the lecturer seemed to like me as well. but as i thought further ahead into my degree in comms & media, i dreaded it. I absolutely fucking dreaded it. the PR stuff sounded as equally dry & boring (besides the point that every project was group work lmao) and so did upper level marketing subs in advertising/marketing strategy/various fields of marketing etc etc. i couldn’t stomach that lmao. and besides the point, the analysing of media just bored the fuck out of me too, for some reason. I just didn’t like the subject. hell, even my advanced diploma in marketing from business college was a fucking hard slog for me.

but when i sat in my english, philosophy, (kind sorta) history and -further down the track- creative writing subjects.... I fucking loved them. I was writing like I’d always wanted to. okay yes I did get pretty dismal marks in most of my philosophy and english exams or assignments. but I don’t fucking care. I was there doing what my mind was built for. if id tried another business subject, like intro to economics or even gone back to redo that “intro to management”/“business communications” (or whatever it was called) as an elective/as electives, i probably would’ve dropped out of either of them in the first 2 weeks. whenever i read those subject descriptions, they literally put me to sleep.

also, for the media and comms point. do you know that there’s loads of media & comms students that don’t get jobs because there’s just such a HUGE intake of students in those courses??? do you know that that the most popualr field in that degree stream (at least when I started that degree at my local home uni in 2015) was journalism & professional writing??? where literally EVERYONE was aiming to be a journalist????

I was one of the very, very few people when I began in media and comms, to outwardly say that she was there to do marketing or maybe the marketing & PR double major.... and everyone looked at me as if I was insane. “why don’t you want to be a journalist? I think journalism is so cool and that I’m more likely to get a job in that than you are in marketing or PR. you actually engage with real people in journalism and do meaningful stuff with the community!” was one of the utterly dumb responses I sometimes got from people in that course, when I told them the above. but you know what kelsey, or, trent? neither one or any of us are “more likely” to get jobs in media & comms... when you’re both competing against people with “proper” straight journalism degrees who might have more media experience than you- if you didn’t do an internship or do some uni newsroom/magazine or whatever.... or maybe more streamlined (if that’s the right word) media &comms degrees.... as well as generally competing against each other, in the same field, for the fucking same exact jobs. while im competing against commerce students doing marketing and PR and people doing the PR & marketing major in m&cs.

also in relation to the above, doing multiple unpaid or even severely underpaid internships in journalism, or even marketing, probably won’t fucking secure your chance of getting a bloody job, adam. just shut the fuck up. those internships may have helped you. but they most likely won’t help most people, theresa. because there’s only a tiny freakin chance that the place that they worked for will actually give them a guranteed job at the end of their internship’s timeframe or at the end of their whole degree. it’s a fucking scam lmao.

and plus, (not to be as rude as you were to me).... but why the FUCK would you want to go into journalism.... when it’s been debased so fucking much by media outlets like buzzfeed; writing nothing but clickbait bullshit listicles.... and is polluted by internet virality.... so much so, that more than half of the people my course had the career goal of being a viral youtuber or an instagram influencer???? like i’m sorry. this is a dumb asf course, no matter the field you’ve chosen to study.... and there’s no way that a single one of you will be a successful viral youtuber or an instagram influencer???? what on fucking earth led you to believe that????

like no offence. but there’ll only be a lucky, lucky, lucky few who get to be the next jennamarbles, ray william johnson, pewdiepie, lily singh, tanya hennessy, jeffree star, james charles, etc etc.... or hell, even friendlyjordies (if you want some satire & politics). and for instagrammers.... idek know them. someone list some instagrammers lmao. but my point still stands.

being an influencer or youtuber- both with huge followings- is a fucking pipe dream- as much as me being a hugely successful author is. it only goes to the insanely lucky, lucky few who have the right connections and the right digital savviness/finesse to grow to be uber successful.... or who started super early, before it was even considered a job title (like jenna mourey/marbles and ray william johnson listed above, and several others not listed who have big fan followings on here) and eventually grew to be the first original titans of the youtuber job title.

or again, they already have some type of other successful media career (like tanya hennessy is an aussie radio announcer. jeffree star had a short lived myspace music career in the late 000s mostly, and made cameos in emo music videos and LA ink at the time also, for example) so that they can successfully fund their youtube channels and/or instagrams as side projects or whatever, as part of their media portfolio.... and they also know how to engage and grow follower bases etc. because they already have an existing one. so it’s twice as easy for them.

tbh i actually entered the m&cs course bc of my use of this hellsite and all the weird trends it had and stuff.... but I eventually got over that as I realised that I just did NOT fit into that field of study. I realised I was too shy... and I also just hated the fact that I had to learn how to use twitter and wordpress and probably eventually snapchat & instagram 😂

i had also gotten sick of follower counts and “growing a following”- considering that by 2015, I’d hit over 3,000 followers on here, I think.... and I realised just what energy and time it took to build this blog.... and my followers.... that I just didn’t have the energy to expend on other platforms for the same thing lmao. like it seemed like more wasted time. I was tired. in addition to that, i also realised that i didn’t want to waste my whole fucking career on the internet worrying over a business’s/company’s multiple corporate social media channel follower counts and image etc.... when i’d done enough of that for myself on this hellsite lmao. doing that stuff with other students in the m&cs course seemed fake asf, especially when it came to giving feedback comments etc lol.

but do you know that one place where you don’t have to give a flying fuck about followers, post views/comments, and blog views? philosophy and english. lmao 😅. no one gives a fuck what you say. unless, of course, you have the evidence and the force of argument to back your pov up. that’s what I was about and am still about. I loved reading and analysing the many books I had to read (contrary to the complaint posts that I made on here lmao)- whereas learning about media and who owned what and how media is manufactured- just made my brain freeze. and although I didn’t do my readings in philosophy (lmao)- i enjoyed a good bulk of the content I had and the issues it involved. doing media & journalism subjects in the m&cs degree, on the other hand, terrified me, bc it meant I had to get in front of a camera and speak- which also scared me bc i look & sound terrible on camera lmao 😂. but I didn’t have to do that almost throughout the entirety of my arts degree (im obvs not counting class presentations in this lol). but do you get my point???

and also the teaching comment. don’t get me wrong, i know a good bunch of people go into teaching after their arts degrees... including many of my friends; and a load of the people I was in my arts degree with. but that is mainly because with other degrees like journalism or media & comms or whatever other fields that they overload into uni arts departments- have taken our job titles away, in a sense....

so, then you’re practically forced to either go into teaching, or go into something outside of your expertise; like idek human resources management/a MBA via a masters.... or, again into something like librarianship via postgrad study- so, that for the love of fucking god- you have a job title to whack next to your name-!!!-instead of just “arts graduate” or “english major” or “philosopher” that all mean fuck all. and that’s because those labels sound vague, unhelpful, undefined and useless; as that’s opposed to something like “teacher” or “librarian” or even “information specialist”. all those titles/labels sound defined, and have actual useful concrete skills: like coding, database creation and maitenance & information retrieval (amongst other things), for a librarian/an information specialist, for example. these skills are then translated into something that you can physically demonstrate to people.... unlike with philosophy and english where people perceive that it’s just “all in your head” and “doesn’t produce anything worthwhile” bc of your very obvious skills that everyone has of communication and writing. like idk. anyway.

a brief update on the school sitch: apparently my professor has ALSO come to the conclusion that these timeframes are bullshit but she was not given a choice in a lot of stuff, and has actually already spoken to the head of the English department about not doing a comp class as a 5-week course, because it’s just not tenable.

That said, we also discussed some stuff that had been bothering me, and most of it was either unavoidable issues with the online course format or a misunderstanding of terminology (ie: “First Draft” = “finished but needs to be edited for quality” vs “First Draft” = “just whatever you’ve got that you can get feedback on”.  I had always been taught it was the first, in school, she meant the second).

It was also just nice bc we talked for an hour and a half, and she’s got some resources to try to help me get a new on-paper ADHD diagnosis since my first one was like 20 years ago and also my parents lost it, but I can’t get it through the psychology dept grad students since they have to go By The Book and I can’t get diagnosed by the book bc my mom won’t fuckin talk to them about what I was like as a kid.  

She also gave me a rundown of what the final project is so I could be reassured it wouldn’t take me hardly any time at all (which means an extension to the research paper won’t likely cut into any time I need to work on that) and told me that as long as I’m not emailing her an hour before it’s due, I can get an extension on the research paper if I need it, and I don’t need to get my proposal approved before working on anything else, etc etc.

I still have some issues with the course and the way it’s set up but the things that are actually in her control she was very gracious about taking feedback on.  I am still stressed as balls, but less so than I was.

Hey brian. I don't know if I'm going to send this but I guess part of me just wants to know that I did my best to explain where I'm coming from even if nothing comes from it, I won't look back and be like well maybe if I'd explained myself more... idk.  It feels futile bc in my experience it just feels like if you have decided some piece of information or feedback is threatening or uncomfortable to you, you will just refuse to hear it or acknowledge it til the end of time. which makes it utterly impossible to work through what should be simple conflicts. I talked to MC about your visit today. she said something like, "I know you aren't someone who is freely vulnerable very often, and as someone who also struggles a lot to feel safe with vulnerability I can really understand how hard that was." I dont know brian, I guess thats why I wanna clarify that it wasn't that you weren't "emotionally available" bc like I said I really wasn't asking for or expecting anything from you. i was just expecting you not to actively throw it back in my face and make me feel like I would lose you for showing my feelings in front of you. I mean, I didn't actually know to ask that, because I hadn't really considered it as a possibility. I felt genuinely shocked. I couldn't imagine ever responding that way to you if the situations were reversed; it would feel so awful and cruel. when i was passive aggressive for a second while you were having anxiety I immediately felt so horrible. if anyone else in my life acted that way towards me, well, it's a moot point because no one else who I keep around in my life would dream of it. my therapist spends all this time trying to convince me that the people I love aren't going to abandon me if I let them see how I feel or let myself have my emotions in front of them but I guess she doesn't know you. i spend $100 a week trying to work through that shit so idk, pay me. I know alcohol plays a role in the whole thing but I also feel not into like using alcohol as a catch all excuse anymore in my life, obviously I still drink but its not a good excuse for being shitty to people you care about, or at least for not taking responsibility for it. If you want to explain where you were coming from or your perception of the situation go ahead, I will listen. slash read and consider. maybe my memory is off. I just want to say that like being able to identify why you acted shitty doesn't justify it. youre an adult and should be able to take responsibility for yourself when youre feeling insecure or whatever. you dont get to just lash out at people without consequences because you were feeling bad or anxious. I don't think you hurt me because youre like "hurting parker is just my idea of a good time." and even if I had been mad about something you did, which I wasn't, I don't understand how that really makes it okay either...  If youre not a person I can feel safe like, crying in front of, telling you that I"m not mad at you but some hard feelings about sex were coming up for me and I was just processing it but it wasn't about you.... without you actively making me feel like shit for expressing that and like you would leave me as a result... how can i feel safe trusting you or like I can be myself around you? I mean especially as someone who is supposed to "love" and "care about" me sooo much who I've known forever, not some stranger... like if a tindr date said they were leaving bc I was crying, sure. but I think some tindr dates would be nicer than that. but you? I’ve made progress today on a huge scene. I think I’m gonna write all day since I’ve been snowed into this restaurant and at least I have my laptop and wifi even if I am here with nosy fam. And I don’t have a lot of plans so I’ll have the time to write all day today.

So hopefully that means a lot of progress will be made. I’m not gonna promise a day for this posting but I will say I’m dedicating as much time as I can to it without actually getting too anxious (since I did promise putting my mental health first and that means I need some free time). But literally all of my “buckle down and work” time is going into writing this. So I can at least assure you it will get to you as soon as I get done and get it reviewed.

I do occasionally need advice about the story bc I can’t read it from another person’s perspective so I occasionally need to ask questions about the first two chapters and what impression certain things left off.

Anyway, sooooo I’m needy. I explained this mostly in the TLDR. But to be fair some TV shows write like this and that is where my training is when it comes to writing. I’m used 24/7 to sitting at a table of writers and being like “does this part of this story match the other chapters” “What is your feedback” “how can I meet audience expectations”.

More than anything this is my hardest chapter to date bc this is not a fun story to wait for and I’ve had you guys waiting practically all semester. So this NEEDS to meet expectations. Maybe y’all don’t mind but I do. I have this weird thing about making y’all proud in exchange for making up for being the worst.

And don’t worry, none of this self-criticism is coming from a dark place. I like being blunt about things I need to improve about myself and how I improve them. We good fam 👍🏽 I’m good, and happy. The only source of stress for me rn is my feelings about my writing, and that improvement-based stress can be good for you.

7) any tips on writing?

i’m not a pro/teacher but here’s my top tips for writing that i try to follow as best i can:

make sure you’re relaxed- don’t put too much pressure on yourself to immediately write something good when you sit down to write. sometimes it takes a few drafts, etc to get something to where you’d like

remember that no one has to read the end result unless you’re happy with it which can take a different amount of time for every person; don’t stress yourself out because a friend/blog posts more often than you

just write! tap into your idea and write down everything you think of for your idea of the imagine, everything can be edited later and it’s good to get your ideas on paper

if you’re feeling awkward about writing about someone who’s a “celebrity”-like person, try and distance yourself from that & put yourself into the story instead

as every english teacher i’ve had has told me: the best way to learn to write/get better/gain ideas on writing is to read. this also applies to imagines, smut, etc; if you want to get better then read those things and you should begin to pick up on the themes, writing styles, etc, that you enjoy & what things work or don’t work
