Lords of Shadows 2 opening:
Tutorial level in my castle which feels like the final boss room (nice)
Basic-ass Castlevania meme
God of War platforming/combat setpiece. Not bad but fuck that archer timing.
Oh, they’re doing a Raziel with Dracula here?
Long-ass montage of animated stills about what I’m assuming is Castlevania lore
Oh my God, it’s still going on
In media res of old decrepit Dracula crawling out of his coffin and - is that Patrick Stewart?
So, my castle is a church now in a modern looking city and people were cool with seeing a pasty zombie let out a death shriek and explode into dust. No crowd of onlookers, no investigation
A Walking Segmet with Larsa from FFXII
Unwinnable fight with a .... demonic triceratops skeleton?
Oh, good I blacked out again
First person view where I glory kill a man and his wife and the game fades to black so it can tastefully imply that I killed the daughter too
If black outs were like timeouts in a sporting event, this game has already blown its wad within the first quarter
Finally, gameplay....
...that turns into a mandatory stealth segment. In a God of War hack n slasher.
This was all in the first twenty minutes. I never played a Castlevania before, but I’ve played games derivative of that style and there’s just so many things here from other titles that overshadow (heh) what should be a Castlevania game.
If I’m coming off like a bitter jerk, sorry. I’m actually enjoying the combat and the general movement of the game. Dodging feels good and there’s no cooldown so you can spam it. This game feels like it needs a double jump, but the climbing animations are overall very smooth.
I think the story has the potential to be a B-movie plot. Gonna play this in-between my Kiwami sessions and find out.
