A Comprehensive Guide to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) - Ensuring Safety and Reliability
What is Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)?
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a range of analysis techniques used in the science and technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, structure, or system without causing damage. NDT methods are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and integrity of various products and structures, especially in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and manufacturing. Unlike destructive testing, which involves testing to the point of failure, NDT allows for thorough inspections while preserving the usability of the tested item.
Geo Con Tech Group specializes in providing comprehensive NDT services to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality in engineering and construction projects. Our expertise in NDT enables us to identify defects and irregularities without compromising the structural integrity of materials and components.
Methods Used in Non-Destructive Testing
Several methods are employed in NDT, each with its unique advantages and applications. The most commonly used methods include:
1. Visual Inspection (VT): Visual Inspection is the most basic NDT method. It involves examining a component with the naked eye or using tools like magnifying glasses, mirrors, or borescopes to detect surface flaws, cracks, or deformities. This method is often the first step in an NDT process and can be enhanced with digital imaging tools.
2. Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Ultrasonic Testing uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws in materials. A transducer sends ultrasonic waves into the material, and the reflections from internal imperfections are recorded and analyzed. UT is highly effective for detecting subsurface defects and measuring material thickness.
3. Radiographic Testing (RT): Radiographic Testing employs X-rays or gamma rays to produce images of the internal structure of a component. These images reveal internal defects such as voids, cracks, and inclusions. RT is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries for inspecting welds and castings.
4. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT): Magnetic Particle Testing involves magnetizing a ferromagnetic material and then applying ferrous particles to the surface. The particles gather at areas with magnetic flux leakage, indicating surface and near-surface defects. MT is commonly used for inspecting welds, castings, and forgings.
5. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): Liquid Penetrant Testing uses a liquid dye to penetrate surface-breaking defects. After removing the excess dye, a developer is applied to draw out the dye trapped in flaws, making them visible under UV or white light. PT is effective for detecting surface cracks and porosity.
6. Eddy Current Testing (ECT): Eddy Current Testing uses electromagnetic induction to detect surface and near-surface defects in conductive materials. An alternating current flows through a coil, generating eddy currents in the material. Variations in the eddy current flow indicate the presence of flaws. ECT is often used for inspecting heat exchanger tubes and aircraft components.
7. Acoustic Emission Testing (AE): Acoustic Emission Testing listens for the sound waves produced by the rapid release of energy from localized sources within a material under stress. These sound waves can indicate the presence of active cracks or other structural changes. AE is useful for monitoring the integrity of pressure vessels and storage tanks.
8. Thermographic Testing (TT): Thermographic Testing uses infrared cameras to detect temperature variations on the surface of a material. These variations can indicate underlying defects such as delaminations, voids, or corrosion. TT is widely used in electrical inspections, building diagnostics, and aerospace applications.
What is the Difference Between Destructive and Non-Destructive Testing?
Destructive Testing (DT) involves testing a material or component to failure to understand its properties, performance, and behavior under various conditions. Examples include tensile testing, impact testing, and hardness testing. DT provides detailed information about material properties but destroys the sample in the process, making it unsuitable for inspecting finished products or critical components.
In contrast, Non-Destructive Testing allows for the evaluation of materials and components without causing damage. NDT methods are non-invasive and preserve the integrity of the item being tested, enabling continuous use and further analysis if needed. This is particularly important for safety-critical industries where maintaining the structural integrity of components is essential.
Advantages of Using Non-Destructive Testing
NDT offers several advantages over destructive testing, making it an essential tool in various industries:
1. Preservation of Material Integrity: NDT methods do not damage or alter the material or component being tested. This allows for the inspection of critical components without compromising their functionality or safety.
2. Cost-Effectiveness: By preserving the tested items, NDT reduces the need for replacements and repairs. It also minimizes downtime by allowing for in-service inspections, leading to significant cost savings.
3. Early Detection of Defects: NDT enables the early detection of defects and irregularities, allowing for timely maintenance and repairs. This helps prevent catastrophic failures and extends the lifespan of components.
4. Comprehensive Inspection: NDT methods can detect a wide range of defects, including surface and subsurface flaws. This comprehensive inspection capability ensures a high level of quality control and reliability.
5. Safety and Reliability: By identifying potential issues before they become critical, NDT enhances the safety and reliability of structures and components. This is particularly important in industries such as aerospace, nuclear, and transportation.
6. Compliance with Standards: NDT methods are often required by industry standards and regulations. Implementing NDT ensures compliance with these standards, reducing the risk of non-conformance and legal issues.
Applications of Non-Destructive Testing
NDT is used across various industries to ensure the safety, reliability, and integrity of materials and structures. Some common applications include:
1. Aerospace: In the aerospace industry, NDT is used to inspect aircraft components, engines, and structures for defects that could compromise safety. Visual Testing (VT) is the simplest and most widely used NDT method. It involves the direct inspection of a material or component to identify surface defects. This method often employs tools like magnifying glasses, mirrors, and borescopes to enhance visibility.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws in materials. The sound waves travel through the material and reflect back from any discontinuities, providing detailed information about the integrity of the component. This method is highly effective for detecting cracks, voids, and other internal defects.
Radiography Testing (RT) utilizes X-rays or gamma rays to produce images of the internal structure of a component. The resulting radiographs reveal any hidden flaws such as cracks, voids, or inclusions. RT is widely used in industries where the internal quality of materials is critical, like aerospace and construction.
Eddy Current Testing (ET) involves inducing electrical currents (eddy currents) in a conductive material and monitoring the interaction of these currents with the material. This method is particularly useful for detecting surface and near-surface defects in metals. ET is commonly used in the inspection of aircraft components and tubing.
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is used to detect surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. It involves magnetizing the component and applying ferrous particles, which accumulate around any flaws, making them visible under appropriate lighting. This method is widely used in industries such as automotive, railways, and welding.
Who may perform non-destructive testing?
Standard-compliant testing necessitates a certified inspector who has attained one of three proficiency levels, based on their experience and training, for the specific testing method (VT, MT, PT, UT, RT).

After the drawing opens, the command line feedback shows a substituted font(s), such as 'Substituting [simplex.shx] for [archquik.shx]' and when looking at the Text Style dialog box, the font is indicated as missing. Note: In some drawings, the text will disappear because of missing fonts.
I know talking about styles in Word makes eyes glaze over but they are a really useful part of Word (plus Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
Today I watched an ‘experienced’ Word user reformatting a document. He laboriously worked through the document, selecting paragraphs, phrases and even individual words then clicking on the ribbon to change the look. It took 10 minutes or more. With styles it would have taken a few seconds.
Authors using Word for Mac 2016 will need to read the Word for Mac2016 User Guide. We have created video documentation to help you through tagging document header, body, and references. We've also provided a video which walks you through the template validation process.
If the font for Heading 1 is changed then the font for Heading 2 will also change due to style inheritance. In a standard Word document, styles can usually be traced back to some base Word styles like Normal and Default Paragraph Font (paragraph and character styles respectively).
Microsoft Word vs Apple Pages review Which is the best word processing option for iPad and iPhone: Microsoft Word or Apple Pages? Our Pages vs Word review tests both iPad and iPhone text editors.
There are typically 2 factors that might create this result. The first is that you do not have WORD set to use the Adobe PDF printer when you are printing (though I do not think this is the issue).
Re: Font spacing goes haywire when Word document is saved to PDF Bill@VT Sep 4, 2011 2:19 AM ( in response to ghumdinger ) Try changing to the press or print job settings before creating the PDF.
Styles have been around for all of Word’s history. They have changed and expanded over the years but the fundamentals are the same.
In this article we’ll explain the different types of styles including at least one that sneaked in without many people noticing. From just one type in the early days of Word, there’s five different style types in Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013.
What is a Style?
A style is a collection of formatting instructions put under a single name.
For example ‘Heading 1’ has these default values in Word 2013 (choose Heading 1 style, right-click and choose ‘Modify Style’.
So ‘Heading 1’ means Cambria font, 14pt, Bold with a color setting, Left justified, 1.15 line spacing and 24pt line space before the text, plus other settings.
Instead of having to apply all those separate formatting options for each main heading, just apply the ‘Heading 1’ style.
Even better, if you decide to change the look of the headings, change the ‘Heading 1’ settings and all the headings with that style will be changed automatically.
Paragraph and Character styles
There are different types of style that can be applied to different parts of a document. Originally there were only Paragraph styles – styles you could apply to an entire paragraph.
That was OK but no help if you wanted consistent formatting for words in a paragraph like a product name Office-Watch.com or just emphasis.
So Microsoft added character styles. These are styles that can be applied to a word or even a single letter. A character style could be called ‘Product Name’ to ensure all references to a product or service look consistent.
Character styles have all the attributes of paragraph styles that are applicable to individual characters. Things like font, size, color, bold, italic etc are in both character and paragraph styles. Line spacing, Left/Right/Center/Justify etc. can only apply to entire paragraphs.
Adding character styles created a new problem. Microsoft discovered that users sometimes had two styles with the same name – one as a paragraph style, the other as a character style. Or people would have two styles such as ‘QuoteP’ and QuoteC’ with the same settings, one for paragraphs and another for word/characters.
Linked styles
So Word 2007 introduced ‘Linked Styles’ which act as both a paragraph style and character style, depending on the situation.
A linked style acts like a paragraph style when a paragraph/s is selected and the style applied.
It acts like a character style when less than a paragraph (a character/word/phrase) is selected and the style applied.
Gone is the need for ‘twin’ styles – now you can have a single style that can applied to any text in a document.
The best example of a linked style is already in Word 2007 or later. All the Heading styles were changed to linked styles. Here’s an example of ‘Heading 1’ style used as both a paragraph and character style at the same time.
Both the paragraph and words were changed to the same style by selecting them and pressing the ‘Heading 1’ shortcut Ctrl + Alt + 1 . The Style Gallery or styles list could have been used to do the same thing.
In the Modify Style dialog you’ll see the style type just under the name.
‘Linked’ isn’t the best choice of terms for this type of style. Most styles are already ‘linked’ to others through style inheritance. ‘Merged’ or ‘Combined’ might have been clearer to most people – but we’re stuck with ‘Linked’.
Which is which?
On the styles list, the three types of style have their own markers.
The lower case ‘a’ next to a character style.
The ‘backwards P’ or Pilcrow is used as an end of paragraph mark in Word and also serves to denote a Paragraph style.
The combined pilcrow and a is, unsurprisingly, for a linked style.
A detailed and independent look at Windows 10, especially for Microsoft Office.
Fully up-to-date with coverage of the May 2019 major update of Windows 10.
This918 page book shows you important features and details for all serious Windows 10 users.
Alas, the Style Gallery on the ribbon isn’t as clear. Among various (ignored) complaints about the Style Gallery is the inconsistent marking.
Paragraph styles (e.g. Normal, Pictures etc.) have the pilcrow next to the style name.
Linked paragraphs (Heading styles etc.) have no marking next to the name.
But neither do the character styles! In the above image there’s no way to know that ‘Subtle Emphasis’ is a character style.
Inheritance
A brief mention of style inheritance.
Styles are normally based on an existing style so only changes from the inherited style need to be made. This lets you apply broader changes to a document a lot faster.
For example, here’s settings for Heading 2
Heading 2 is based on the Heading 1 style, so all the settings for Heading 1 are linked into Heading 2 as a starting point.
The settings like ’13pt, Not Bold …’ etc. are only the differences between Heading 1 and what’s been changed to the look for Heading 2.
If the font for Heading 1 is changed then the font for Heading 2 will also change due to style inheritance.
In a standard Word document, styles can usually be traced back to some base Word styles like Normal and Default Paragraph Font (paragraph and character styles respectively). However you can create a style ‘from scratch’ with no inheritance. Here’s the same Heading 2 style with the ‘Style based on’ removed.
Now you can see all the formatting attributes in detail.
Unlinking styles might seem like a good idea that makes things simpler, but experienced Word users almost never do it. Style inheritance can be a nuisance at times, but its more helpful than a hindrance.
What’s going on?
Sometimes the formatting can get confusing. What’s a paragraph setting, what’s a character style and what is directly applied with no style? WordPerfect had a ‘Reveal Codes’ feature which Microsoft resisted copying but finally added to Word.
There’s two options for exposing what Word is up to. The Style Inspector (Word 2007 and later) and Reveal Formatting. Here’s both in action side-by-side.
As you can see the Style Inspector is a small box that can be dragged around the screen. Open the Style Inspector from the button at the bottom of the Styles pane:
Reveal Formatting has a lot more detail and sits in the right-hand pane. There’s a button for Reveal Formatting on the Style Inspector box.
The Shift + F1 shortcut will open the Reveal Formatting pane. This shortcut has worked since Word 2002 (XP).
Table and List styles
Also added in Word 2007 were two more styles.
Table styles, let you group together all the many formatting options for tables.
Similarly, all the options for list formatting were a nightmare until Word 2007 when List Styles were introduced. Now all the, sometimes complex, choices for lists (numbering, indenting at each level) can be more easily and consistently applied.

Symptoms
Word For Mac 2016 Font Issues Jan 2018 Calendar
When you use Microsoft Office programs, you notice that visual features differ from one computer to another. For example, you see animations in Excel when you scroll through a worksheet on one computer, but you do not see the same animations on another computer.
Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms that reduce the functionality of an Office program:
Quark 2016 Font Issues
An Office program is blurry.
Your screen flickers or flashes.
An Office program is either mostly all white or all black.
Text in your document is not displayed well.
Your Office program crashes.
The performance of an Office program (other than startup and shutdown) is reduced.
In Microsoft Lync, there may be video delays or slowness when you are on a video call.
Cause
You may experience these symptoms if you have a video configuration on your computer that is incompatible with the Office feature set that is responsible for displaying the application and for animations in the application.
Office 2013 and later versions use a more efficient and accelerated method to draw the Office UI and the content. This includes relying on hardware acceleration, which is managed through the operating system. The hardware acceleration function of the operating system relies on up-to-date and compatible display drivers.
Note Hardware acceleration that uses the video card is always disabled when Office is running in a Remote Desktop session, and also when the application is started in safe mode.
Resolution
The resolution varies depending on your version of Windows and the symptom you are experiencing.
For the symptom: Poorly Displayed Text in Office Documents
If your symptom is 'Poorly Displayed Text in Office Documents,' try the following solutions first. Otherwise, skip to the next section titled All Other Symptoms.
Step 1: Use the 'ClearType Text Tuner' Setting
Search for ClearType.
Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8: On the Start Screen, search for ClearType.

Note
Word For Mac 2016 Font Issues Jan 2018 Printable Calendar
Video card manufacturers frequently release updates to their drivers to improve performance or to fix compatibility issues with new programs. If you do not find an updated video driver for your computer through Windows Update and must have the latest driver for your video card, go to the support or download section of your video card manufacturer's website for information about how to download and install the newest driver.
More Information
Automatic disabling of hardware acceleration for some video cards
By default, hardware acceleration is automatically disabled in Office programs if certain video card and video card driver combinations are detected when you start an Office program. If hardware acceleration is automatically disabled by the program, nothing indicates that this change occurred. However, if you update your video card driver and it is more compatible with Office, hardware acceleration is automatically reenabled.
The list of video card/video driver combinations that trigger this automatic disabling of hardware graphics acceleration is not documented because the list is hard-coded in the Office programs and will be constantly changing as we discover additional video combinations that cause problems in Office programs. Therefore, if you do not see the same animation functionality on one computer that you see on another computer, we recommend that you update your video driver by using the instructions provided in the 'Update your video driver' section. If you still do not see the expected animation on your computer, update your video driver again soon. Microsoft is working with the major video card manufacturers on this issue, and these video card manufacturers will be releasing new video drivers as such drivers are developed.
Note
If two computers have the same video card/video driver combinations, you may still see a difference in the Office animation features between the two computers if one computer is running Windows 7 and the other computer is running Windows 8. On a computer that is running Windows 7, animations in Office are disabled if the video card/video driver combination appears on the incompatibility list. However, the same video combination on Windows 8 does not have animations disabled because of the improved video capabilities in Windows 8.

Top 10 Pressure Vessel Inspection and Testing Methods Discussed
Pressure vessels are widely used in various industries for storing gases or liquids at different pressures. At times, these pressures may increase due to atmospheric factors or other unforeseen factors. They may harm the property and people. To avoid this, most pressure vessels developed for industrial applications are designed to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. In earlier days, the pressure vessels exploded due to overpressure. As a result ASME standards were formed. Today, the design, manufacturing, testing, and inspection of pressure vessels is governed by ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). Thus, manufacturers need to be aware of these standards. Does that mean all pressure vessels are built in adherence to ASME BPVC? No, there are non-ASME pressure vessels, too. Although some manufacturing techniques may be similar, these pressure vessels may not be inspected or tested as per ASME BPVC codes. This post gives you an overview of ASME inspection and testing techniques employed by manufacturers to ensure the safety of pressure vessels.
Know About Different Types of ASME Pressure Vessel Testing and Inspection
Pressure vessels must be strong enough to maintain their pressure and structural integrity in challenging conditions. Today, various types of testing is conducted to check the leaks and performance of pressure vessels under different conditions. During these tests, the pressure vessels are subjected to real challenges, which they are intended to overcome to pass off as a quality product. The following are a few popular pressure vessel testing methods.
· Hydrostatic Testing: As the name indicates, this type of testing involves water. The pressure vessel is filled with water, pressurized nearly one and half times its limit, and checked for leakage. This type of testing is performed on boilers, pipelines, or fuel tanks to check their integrity.
· Pneumatic Testing: This type of testing is performed using non-toxic gases. The gases like nitrogen or air are chosen for testing as they do not explode or cause much harm in case of accidents. When compared to hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing is sparingly used due to the challenges involved. If in any case the pressure vessel fractures during the testing, it may lead to dangerous consequences. This testing is only used in situations when pressure vessels cannot be filled with water.
In addition to these, the following non-destructive testing techniques are also performed to check the surface defects and internal defects on the pressure vessels.
1. Visual Testing (VT): This is the most basic testing conducted by experts on pressure vessels. They examine the pressure vessels with naked eyes examining the material, checking for visible leaks or other imperfections on the surface of the pressure vessel. Apart from leaking, corrosion, erosion, and cracking are checked for. Inspectors may use flashlights to check the interiors of the pressure vessel. Nowadays, remote visual inspection (RVI) is gaining priority. Drones or robots are also being used for visual inspection.
2. Ultrasonic Testing (UT): This is another non-destructive testing method that uses sound waves to check the integrity of a pressure vessel. High-frequency sound waves are made to pass through the pressure vessel to check for any changes in the material property. Echoes or sound reflections help inspectors understand the imperfections on the surface. One of the major drawbacks of this testing is that it needs to be performed in real time and does not produce any lasting records.
3. Radiography NDT (RT): This type of non-destructive testing uses X-rays or gamma rays to detect flaws in pressure vessels. RT is a volumetric technique, which can detect issues within the pressure vessel. In this technique, the X-ray generator produces radiation that is directed to the pressure vessel being tested and the reflection is observed on a detector. The readings on the detector produce a shadowgraph, which enables inspectors to identify the imperfections of the pressure vessel. Today, RT is being increasingly used because it enables experts to uncover the imperfections that are otherwise not visible to the naked eye. This may include slight or major density alternations at places.
4. Eddy Current NDT (ET): As the name indicates, this type of testing utilizes eddy current in the magnetic field of a conductive material to identify defects in the material. It is one of the key types of electromagnetic testing techniques performed by inspectors.
5. Magnetic Particle NDT (MT): In this testing, the magnetic current is passed through the pressure vessel to identify imperfections on the surface. In case of any imperfections, there may be an interruption in the flow of the current. This interruption creates a flux leakage field. The flux leakage fields usually become visible when ferromagnetic particles are spread on the pressure vessel.
6. Acoustic Emission NDT (AE): In this testing, acoustic emissions are used to determine possible imperfections in a pressure vessel. The intensity, arrival time, and location of these emissions are checked to understand the defects.
7. Liquid Penetrant NDT (PT): In this type of testing, a thin liquid or penetrant is spread over the material surface. The penetrant comprises a fluorescent dye, which deeply penetrates into defects or imperfect surfaces. Then a developer is used to draw the solution on defects and ultraviolet radiations highlight the defects.
8. Leak Testing (LT): Going by its name, this testing is performed to check the leaks in pressure vessels. Leak testing is performed using a pressure gauge, electronic listening devices, and soap bubble tests.
In addition to these tests, inspection is performed on pressure vessels. The inspection can be conducted in two ways:
· Internal Inspection: To perform this inspection, the pressure vessel is emptied and taken down from operation. This inspection is usually conducted to identify leaks, corrosion, or other imperfections on the surface of pressure vessels.
· External Inspection: This inspection is usually performed to check the outer condition of the pressure vessel. External inspection can be performed anytime, and for this, the pressure vessel need not be removed from operation. During this inspection, the inspector mainly checks for defects near the external components like vessel connections, inlet piping, outlet piping, and so on. The vessel is also checked for any defects such as leakage of gas, liquid, or vapor. The vessel mountings are inspected to see if they allow any expansion and contraction. In addition to this, nuts, bolts, and other accessories are checked for rusting and corrosion.
Top 4 Benefits of Pressure Vessel Testing and Inspection
Pressure vessel testing and inspection are important for various reasons apart from safety. The following are a few key reasons for the same.
1. Minimal Downtimes: Removing pressure vessels from service is not an easy task. This may require several adjustments and additional investments. This would mean long downtimes. By ensuring proper testing and inspection, users can easily minimize the situations of these downtimes.
2. Money Saving: Pressure vessels are one of the important investments in environments, where they are used to store various toxic gases and liquids. Repairing these pressure vessels may not be easy and they need to be removed from operation for repairs. The repairs may sometimes take weeks to complete, which would add to operational costs. Regular testing and inspection will avoid business users to reduce the instances of big repairs.
3. Accuracy: Most non-destructive testing methods covered in this post are proven to assure accurate and effective results. Both these qualities are helpful when it comes to ensuring the quality, safety, and longevity of pressure vessels and people.
4. Efficiency and Quick Turnaround Times: The testing methods are performed using advanced equipment, which assures immediate results. This helps reduce waiting times and ensures the performance and safety of the workplace.
As long as you understand the importance of safety in your facility you will understand the importance of sourcing your ASME pressure vessels from trusted manufacturers too. Once you find an experienced ASME certified manufacturer, ensure to check on their experience. To get it right, always conduct multiple discussion sessions with the experts at the company. Also, check on different procedures that they follow during the manufacturing, inspection, and testing stages. After all, a robust pressure vessel is a combined effort of a client and an expert manufacturer.

Lynx Prowler VT Stinger Driving Iron
Lynx Golf’s brand new Prowler VT Stinger Driving Iron is both a throwback of sorts to the age of the 1-iron – golfers of a certain vintage will relate, whether they actually dared to keep such “butter knives” in their bags — and a huge leap forward in the hybrid iron genre.
While all the new clubs rolling off a rejuvenated Lynx Golf’s production line have impressed Golf Tips reviewers for the better part of 2019, this new stick takes us into 2020 as another fairway-finding weapon altogether, pretty much a genre all its own.
And an affordable one at that.
Offered in 15- or 16-degree lofts (Ben Hogan’s famed 1-iron was supposedly 17 degrees), with a shaft length about the same as the average 4- or 5-hybrid, the Prowler VT Stinger’s very name gives away its utility as a gotta-keep-it-in-the-short-grass option when the driver, or even a 3-metal or easy-to-duck hook hybrid just doesn’t feel right when you’re faced with a sharp dogleg or otherwise tight landing zone.
For one thing, the club’s high-profile face not only affords a bit more visual confidence at address, but its varying-thickness design redistributes weight toward the face’s periphery to, says the company, “increase MOI and reduce sidespin on off-center hits by up to 36%.”
We found no issue with that assertion. When teed low and struck with a slightly downward blow, as you would with a regular iron, the Stinger produces a piercing ball flight that would make Tiger himself nod and smile in approval. Contact feels both soft and solid, and with the weight profile and wide sole, the club resists the big curve; it’s virtually impossible to turn the toe over, or drag it, through impact.
During on-course testing on two Maui favorites — the recently tweaked Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort and popular Emerald Course at Wailea — the Prowler VT Stinger made pleasing work of several tee shots, including a beautiful baby draw on the Emerald’s testy, water-laden, downhill, short par 4 17th. Distance-wise the club compares to a 3-metal (most of which are also 15 degrees); on that particular hole we were left with a half-wedge to a front pin. Tasty!
Yes, the Stinger is indeed a “driving” iron — it’s right there in the name—but don’t be afraid to employ it from the fairway, especially from level lies with plenty of grass under the ball. Just play it a bit back in the stance, shallow out the swing just a skosh, and don’t get too steep coming down, as a fat shot is sure to follow.
Back on the tee, you can move the club forward, make a nice-relaxed move and marvel at the resulting dead-straight, wind-cheating shot. And you don’t have to find a pinhead-sized sweet spot, a la the old 1970s 1-iron, to pull it off.
Yes, we love our hybrids, including Lynx’s own Black Cat line, but this baby has earned a spot in our regular 14-stick rotation. It’s a big-time Prowler for par, or better.

""Mustang Insurance, Help!!!?""
Hello, I have a quick question about insurance. I am 18 years old, living in Orange, CA and currently driving a 2003 nissan altima that I am going to trade for a 2002 ford mustang gt. Now i know that contacting an agent will be the best way to find out more realistic rates, but right now I want to hear from past mustang owners. I was also wondering if having good credit will give me a discount on my insurance? I know insurance will be high, so don't waste my time explaining it to me, If it helps, I always obey the speed limit, never gotten into any crashes nor have I gotten any tickets. All Help is appreciated, thanks.""
Need insurance for mercedes car - which insurer will use mercedes repair centre?
I'm buying a Mercedes B class. Swinton have given me some good insurance quotes but during the long conversation (with Aviva) to get 7 day drive-away insurance I was told to be careful of the small print: to keep the Mobilo service I must always use Merc-approved garages for servicing and repairs; unfortunately Swinton's insurers say they will choose where the car goes and this is very unlikely to be a Merc garage. So my question is: what do Merc owners do? From whom do you get your car insurance to make sure any repairs are carried out by a Merc-approved repair centre?

How can I find out what auto insurance a company has?
OK. So I use to work for this repossession company and I was hit by an idiot that ran a red light. Anyway after the accident I got a lawyer. I quit there shortly after. Well the insurance card in the tow truck was expired and not the right company . When the company switch insurance they forgot to put the new card in.. well since the drive that hit me did not have insurance the personal injury will be covered by the companies insurance. But the owner will not tell my lawyer the name of the insurance company or anything. And said your gonna have to take me to court. He is a real jerk btw. So does anyone know how I could find out online or something what company they were with at the time of the accident??
What should i expect in a auto accident and insurance settlement?
I was hit from behind on Wednesday evening heading to work. The driver was ticketed by the police and their insurance company has admitted full liability. Injury wise, I have whiplash which thankfully, is going away now. My car, according to their adjuster, is going to be claimed as totaled. So, my car is valued at 7400, and repairs just from visual inspection, are 7015. So they are going the totaled route as its cheaper for them. After they buy the car from me, they will sell it to salvage, expect to get 2k from it, and only be out 5400 instead of a full cost of repairs. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement. Know that I'm here to work for you, try to work with me I'm thinking my head total bull crap. 1, she works for her insurance company first, and will have their interest first, 2, she works for their client and to protect them from me in a suit. In the end, I'm not stuck with a car that they will not fully pay to have repaired, and will still owe 5k after they pay the loan holder the value of the car. My credit is damaged and getting a new loan is probably not going to happen easily. I really don't want to get a lawyer but I now have a car sitting in my driveway that I can't use plus a balance in the end. Anyone got some suggestions as to what I should realistically expect. The lady mentioned a liability settlement, repair settlement, medical expenses settlement, and personal injury settlement. I'm not out to make money on this as that just will not happen. But I have no car and will owe 5k still. I'm just like...f**k""
Easy ways to save extra money on car insurance?

First time Car Owner Getting Insurance?
I'm a college student, not living with my parents, which means I will need to start my own parents. and I'm looking to buy my first car, which might be an out-of-state title. Say I eventually, locked on a deal. The question is: Do I have to buy insurance before paying for the car. But then how does the insurance company assess the quote since I haven't had a car yet. ""Wrecked best friends car, no license, I'm uninsured, 18 and terrified! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!?""
So, I am 18, and yesterday my cousin was planned to come in from the UK at the Sky Harbor Airport in, Arizona. On my way there I was driving at a close speed limit of 50, speed limit was 45, approaching a red light, I was slowing down, when something abruptly ran across the road, close to the car, causing me to slam on the breaks, losing control of the wheel, and I tumbled 4 times over the street, busting the side window, scraping some paint, and cracking the windshield. Thankfully, I was not hurt, no neck, back, leg, or any body injuries for that matter. The police was near by, so helped me out, firefighters took care of me, to make sure I was okay. And then the report happened. I told them the honest truth, they said that I won't be arrested, or given a ticket, but I do have to go to court to prove I had no insurance. I don't know what to do, I know it was completely idiotic driving without a license, and no permit, with no insurance, but my friend has insurance on the car. I have the police report, and I don't know what I have to do, but I will help him with anything as this is my best friend, and I am not straying away from this situation. Will his insurance cover this? Do I look okay is this situation? PLEASEEEE! Someone help me! I'm desperate for advice, I've definitely learned my lesson, and I have no family here in Arizona as they are all in Georgia, I am here for school at ASU, please tell me his insurance will cover this!""

Do I need a motorcycle VIN number to get insurance in NC?
I live in North Carolina and I'm trying to get a license to purchase and operate a 150cc motorcycle. In North Carolina you must have a license for an automobile before you can get an endorsement for a motorcycle. Right now I'm learning how to drive a van so I can get a motorcycle endorsement. Before you can get a license for an automobile you must have proof of liability insurance (DMV form DL-123). Do I actually need a vehicle with a VIN number to get liability insurance? Or do I have to purchase non-owners insurance first and then switch it over to motorcycle insurance after I get an automobile license with motorcycle endorsement?

Is my son even covered under our car insurance?
My 21 year old son not only is no longer in college he also got married 3 months ago. I have not canceled him from our multi-car policy, I guess just so he will have car insurance (liability, required in our state), but I know he was supposed to be removed when he got married, as he is no longer in our household. I also would like to remove him so I can benefit from a lower premium. He keeps saying he can't afford it, so I keep paying the bill each month, that includes his car on it. I guess I am asking if he got into an accident would the insurance even be good, as he isn't even living in our house and he's married. I may have wasted my money these last 3 months anyway, but don't want him to get caught with what appears to be uninsured, without a valid insurance card in the glove box.""

As virtual reality continues to become more sophisticated, forward-looking brands are taking advantage of the technology’s possibilities. Below, we take a quick tour of five different industries. In each case, we profile one company that provides a cutting-edge VR experience.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The ability to enter different realities may well become the 21st century’s defining characteristic, and this technology will transform every industry.
1. Travel: Tourism Australia
Tourism Australia provides 18 different 360-degree film sequences, showcasing various destinations. The most popular of these include some interaction with wildlife, such as swimming with sea lions or snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. Users can view the film clips with a Google Cardboard or any other mobile headset. The tourism board’s chief marketing officer, Lisa Ronson, comments, “We have a very competitive landscape in destination marketing, with national tourist offices spending a lot of money. We need to be able to tell the story of Australia in new and engaging ways.”
After launching their campaign, Tourism Australia partnered with Google Think Board and TNS to study its effectiveness. The results provide solid evidence for VR’s value: The videos have been viewed over 10 million times, and they have helped drive a 9 percent increase in visits to the country. After introducing this campaign, the Australia tourism industry experienced a record-breaking year.
To draw travelers with more resources, tourism boards and hospitality brands are offering a sensory taste through VR. Tourism Australia comments, “Virtual reality is one of the most exciting innovations in tourism marketing, enabling consumers to live and experience a destination directly from their living rooms.”
Future Directions for VR in Travel Video tourism previews such as these are only the beginning. Virtual reality offers many fresh possibilities for the travel industry. A virtual tour guide could provide consumers with a deeper dive into the real-life location they are contemplating. This tour could have an added story element, allowing users to “choose their own adventure.” Some light gamification could also enhance the travel shopping experience. A travel game could give people simple tasks within their virtual preview. Offering them rewards for these tasks would encourage them to make the leap and actually go on vacation.
2. Automobiles: Toyota
Toyota’s virtual reality strategy contributed to a 5 percent lead conversion rate, and that’s not surprising: Shoppers who can personally experience a car and virtually activate all of its features will develop a highly engaged relationship to the vehicle.
In their real-life marketing, Toyota whetted the appetites of customers for its model C-HR before it was released. By offering a virtual experience powered by Zero Light, Toyota captured users’ interests and then stayed connected with those users through an at-home mobile VR experience.
Toyota Takes the Lead in VR Toyota has been stepping forward aggressively into the world of VR automobile marketing. As an exhibitor at the TechCrunch Disrupt Conference in 2016, Toyota previewed their immersive VR sales experience. Their demo offered the high-quality immersive technology of the HTC Vive, as well as spatial audio and a steering wheel with haptic sensors. The compelling demonstration uses an actual seat from the Prius Prime. Sitting in this seat contributed to a powerful sense of immersion.
VR Actively Engages Auto Shoppers Enjoying a virtual test drive as part of a game can help people move beyond passive viewing and begin to actively engage with the car. Toyota’s VR experience puts people in the middle of a story. Customers play the role of a getaway driver for a mysterious rider carrying a briefcase. They virtually careen through traffic and escape other vehicles until they reach the culmination of the story and find out what was inside that briefcase.
A CBS news video in January 2018 highlighted some of the uses of VR in future auto sales. The report emphasizes the fact that virtual reality allows buyers to avoid human sales representatives. Instead, buyers can privately (and safely) explore the car’s features and behavior through a virtual test drive.
3. Commercial Real Estate: Macerich
The ability to visualize what an office or apartment building will look like before it’s built is only one advantage of VR Another key benefit is the ability to offer virtual tours to multiple people at once, so an entire investment team can simultaneously tour a property. Decision-makers in a different city can get a full view without having to personally travel to the site.
Residential home buyers have been able to access 3D walkthroughs for a few years. Commercial real estate is breaking new ground with virtual reality design, offering 3D views of future properties. As commercial leasing platform VTS explains, “On the commercial side, one of the most prominent applications of VR is marketing for space that is under construction– or even still on the drawing board. Virtual tours can help potential tenants visualize a space that doesn’t yet exist, and effectively speed lease-up for developers and owners.
Removing Time and Distance Barriers When Macerich wanted to showcase its 500,000 square foot shopping development in San Francisco, it used VR technology from Floored. Macerich has been at the forefront of defining VR’s usefulness in the commercial real estate market. AZ Big Media notes that Macerich has been using VR to “enhance a building’s impact for stakeholders.”
Customizing Spaces with VR. Seeing a space ahead of time can be interactive, rather than simply passive. VR gives buyers the ability to reconfigure layouts altogether, including moving walls and reshaping rooms. Leaseholders can choose the right colors and furnishings, customizing their space before it’s assembled. Links to furniture retailers within the virtual showroom allow customers to purchase the furnishings they prefer.
4. Education: Oxford University
A Classroom of Avatars At the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show, Oxford University teamed up with Immersive VR Education to showcase its new offerings. The platform, called Engage, uses HTC Vive headsets to accommodate up to 30 students at once. The students are represented by avatars in the virtual world, allowing the teacher to provide real-time feedback on student work. The subject of the demonstration is Oxford’s “Life-Saving Instruction for Emergencies (LIFE) Project,” which trains health workers who will be doing medical relief work in developing countries. Dr. Chris Paton, Group Head for Global Health Informatics at the Centre for Tropical Medicine, states that “VR allows students in remote areas to connect with trainers in a virtual hospital ward where they can access equipment and practice performing tasks with a virtual instructor.”
People learn best when they are involved, and VR is the most direct way of actively engaging students with any subject matter. Placing people in new environments often evokes emotions, and these emotions help form strong memories.
Teaching is an ideal example of virtual reality use cases, and new technology will make it easier to share such experiences. This technology enables instructors to set up virtual classrooms, in which students all over the world can interact at the same time.
5. Retail: Alibaba
Redefining Today’s Virtual Shopping Experience Alibaba is the largest online shopping site in China, and they are using virtual reality to fundamentally transform the shopping experience. In Fall 2016, Alibaba launched its Buy+ VR platform, giving users the chance to view virtual representations of a selection of products. The only equipment needed was a Google Cardboard VR headset and a smartphone. Within one hour of launch, 30,000 users had tried out the experience. A year later, Alibaba upgraded this platform by erecting a “virtual mall” in which shopper could explore offerings from six different retailers.
These sensory explorations are still in their very early phases, but Alibaba’s innovations suggest the shopping methods of the future. A few technologies need to become more sophisticated in order to make the virtual storefront comparable to in-person shopping. Gaze-based interfaces are beginning to be functional, but they still face design challenges. Haptic gloves, which allow users to experience tactile sensations with their hands, will inevitably become part of the virtual shopping experience.
VR’s Bright Future To recognize the enormous power of VR’s emerging influence, one only has to look at the investment forecasts: IDC projects that global spending on AR and VR will rise from 2017’s $11.4 billion to over $200 billion in 2021. The ability to enter different realities may well become the 21st century’s defining characteristic, and this technology will transform every industry.
Just as Amazon disrupted brick and mortar storefronts, virtual reality is enabling the next quantum leap in retail. Although the state of portable VR technology is still evolving, some companies are pushing the envelope of what’s possible.
Appealing to the Senses As part of its virtual shopping mall, Alibaba rolled out a new form of payment. VR Pay allows customers to make purchases within the virtual environment. They only have to look or nod at a product, and it is placed in their shopping cart. The user provides personal identification through voice print technology. They also have to input a password, which they can do by directing their gaze at a certain point for a specified length of time.
Five VR Applications By These Industries Will Put You In Amazment As virtual reality continues to become more sophisticated, forward-looking brands are taking advantage of the technology's possibilities.

On feature flipping, deli coffee, and hashing algorithms
Life’s full of goods and bads .
Surfing. Good. Warm beer. Bad
In-N-Out animal style fries. Really good.
Rush hour L train traffic. Really bad.
Modern digital computers might be binary, but the world isn’t. There’s a whole list of things that fall somewhere in the middle. They’re not really good, and not totally bad. They’re good enough.
- Deli coffee - its no Blue Bottle, but it gets the job done.
- Dollar slice pizza - It will never approach Prince Street’s level, but at 4am who cares?
pseudorandomness - ...
Each of the above examples is a worthy candidate for today’s post, but this is a programming blog and you bet we’ll be talking about programming. Let’s look at pseudorandomness and use it to prove why sometimes in software good enough can be, well…good enough.
What would we do without Google? (read: StackOverflow). A quick search and 200ms later Merriam-Webster dictionary is breaking this fancy word down for us:
pseudo - “being apparently rather than actually as stated” synonym: sham
random - “without definite aim, direction, rule, or method”
Pseudorandomness is when something seems like it was generated without any rhyme or reason, when it actually did follow a series of rules. Not truly random, but random enough.
Even if this is the first time you’ve seen this word, it surely isn’t the first time you’ve experienced it. Think about the last time you played music on shuffle. Wasn’t it rad how your computer randomly flipped through songs, avoiding you the pain of having to listen to that playlist in the same order as yesterday’s morning commute. The truth is the song picks weren’t actually random, but that didn’t matter to you, did it? They were chosen pseudorandomly - not truly random, but random enough.
Our computers are great at lots of things. Performing complex calculations, predicting the outcome of events, even mining cryptocurrencies, but if there’s one thing they’re horrible at, its randomness. The problem is your computer is actually really dumb. It not only needs to be told what to do, but also exactly how to do it. This includes generating randomness.
side note: You haven’t experienced how dumb these machines really are until you’ve had a compiler scream at you for forgetting a semicolon.
Luckily computer scientists have been working on this problem of randomness for a long time and they’ve gotten pretty good at it as demonstrated by the shuffle example. The other day, while reviewing a pull request on a popular open source project I collaborate on, I came across a few lines of code that show a great use case for pseudorandomness. I figure if I find them cool then you might too. Let’s walk through this code with the intention that by the end of this post we’ll be equipped with concrete examples as to how us software developers can use pseudorandomness to build software that is good enough.
Flipper is an open source Ruby gem that makes feature flipping easy, while having minimal impact on your application no matter your data store, throughput, or experience. Let’s say our engineering team at VTS just finished a brand new Net Effective Rent (NER) calculator. Before we roll it out to all users we’d like to test it with a subset. This is what Flipper lets us do. We can enable this calculator for:
specific user
group of users
percentage of users
percentage of time
all actors
Flipper calls each of these ways a feature can be enabled a gate. As for all actors; An actor is anything that responds to flipper_id. For today’s conversation we’ll keep it simple and say an actor is a user, but its good to keep in mind this could be anything.
Flipper definitely lives up to its goal of being easy to use. You create features and enable them for one of these five options. As users access a page with said feature, your code asks Flipper “is this feature enabled for this user?”. Flipper responds true or false.
eg: enabling a feature for specific users
While I’d love to spend time talking about all of these gates in depth, the README does a great job. Instead, let’s focus on two of the more interesting gates.
percentage of time
percentage of actors
Percentage of Time
The percentage of time gate allows you to enable a feature for a given percentage of time. A feature that is enabled for 20% of the time means that 20% of the time a user navigates to a page with that feature it will be on. The other 80% it will be off. Put another way if we call
flipper.enabled?(user)
one hundred times it should return true 20 out of the 100 invocations. While there aren’t tons of use cases for this, there are a few. A great use case for the percentage of time gate is load testing. We’d like to see how our application responds to different numbers of users interacting with it. We start with a small percentage, say 5%. This means that 5% of users visiting the page will see the feature. Over the next few weeks we can gradually increase this percentage.
Show me the code!
What happens when the above line is evaluated? At the end of the day, or really the end of the call-stack, Flipper invokes a function, open? that returns true if a given user can see a feature, and false otherwise. Every one of the fives gates implements open?.
Can we write an implementation of open? that returns true n% of the time it is invoked.
This is software so of course we can and we’re going to use pseudorandomness to accomplish it. It might not be very obvious at first, but the solution is actually quite simple:
If you’re not familiar with Ruby’s Kernel#rand, no problem, its a core function that when “called without an argument...returns a pseudo-random floating point number between 0.0 and 1.0, including 0.0 and excluding 1.0″. Some possible outcomes of our function given a percentage of 0.5 are:
0.2 < 0.5
0.1 < 0.5
0.6 < 0.5
Assuming rand generates a random enough number we’re claiming that ~50% of the time the generated number is going to be less than 0.5, which is true.
Just in case you don’t believe me let’s test it out by invoking our function 100 times and counting the number of times it returns true.
Great that looks about right, but to avoid disappointing statistics professors worldwide (you never know who reads these things), let’s use a more appropriate sample size. This time we’ll call open?(0.5) a total of 10,000 times, recording the number of times per 100 calls it returns true.
note: every element in the array is a sample of 100 calls to open?(0.50) and shows the number of times true was returned.
It looks like the majority of the results are ~50, and with a little more code we get a nice visualization using Ruby’s awesome Gruff library.
Let’s also take the average while we’re at it:
On average our open? implementation returns true ~50.44 percent of the time. It isn’t exactly 50%, but I’d say its damn good enough. You now know how Flipper’s percentage of time gate implements open?
Hopefully, by now its clear how Flipper is able to turn a feature on for a percentage of time by taking advantage of pseudorandomness to produce a solution that isn’t perfect but undoubtedly works good enough. That leaves us with our next and most interesting question.
Percentage of Actors
How can Flipper turn a feature on for a percentage of users, while consistently returning the same answer when asked whether a given user is enabled without computing and persisting the list of users in some datastore? Taking our current formula, adding another form of pseudorandomness, and topping it off with a bit of creative thinking is all we’ll need to produce a really clever solution.
Given we want to check if a feature is turned on for a user, let’s start with our inputs:
User: { id: 1 }
Feature: { name: “ner_calculator” }
Percentage of time this feature should be on: 30 (note: we’ll use whole number representations of percentages to keep things simple)
If we could get a deterministic pseudo-random number based on the given user and feature then we should be able to use the same approach as above. Something along the lines of:
We know we can’t use rand as it only accepts one integer argument, not a user or feature. This is where Flipper gets very clever. I’ll show a simplified example (as to avoid needing to understand any of the implementation details such as how Flipper stores values in your datastore) of how Flipper accomplishes the percent of actors gate, and then explain step-by-step what’s going on.
Genius. The interesting idea here is figuring out how to generate a random number given a user and a feature. The key point is that this random number needs to always be the same number given the same inputs. Otherwise this gate would act more like a percentage of time gate and sometimes say yes this feature is enabled for this user and other times say no. Flipper accomplishes this via the crc32 checksum, a commonly used algorithm to detect accidental changes to data sent over a network, as a hashing function. Hashing algorithms take some input and (ideally) produce a unique output. Crc32 serves as a great hashing algorithm for our case because its efficient and only produces integers unlike some other hashing algorithms such as SHA-1 and MD5 that produce alphanumerics. The important thing to note here is that crc32 isn’t a perfect solution for our use case, but its good enough. The outputs aren’t random or else we’d end up with non-deterministic values. They’re just seemingly random!
eg: crc32 checksum of two similar strings. Notice there is seemingly no similarity between the two produced values despite the similarity of inputs. Given the same inputs the output will always be the same.
One more hashing function to make sure we all understand the high-level idea because it is important for this conversation. Say we have a hash function that given a string input returns the sum of its bytes.
Hashing a few strings:
At first this might seem like a decent hash function, but its actually horrible. Without even getting into the issues with passing in strings with varying encodings (Definitely check out my post on character encodings if you’re not up to speed on how computers handle characters. hint: “Alex” might not always sum to 394), its a bad hash function because its capable of producing many collisions. A collision is when two or more inputs hash to the same output. By simply rearranging the characters we’re not changing the total number of bytes so:
hash_str(”xlAe”)
hash_str(”eAlx”)
hash_str(”lxeA”)
all hash to 394! - assuming we’re working with ASCII or UTF-8 encoded strings.
Back to Flipper.
open? takes the user’s id and concatenates it with the feature name.
Substituting id with its value for a user with id: 22 and feature name: :ner_calculator. We get:
Futher reducing the lefthand side of the equation we calculate the crc32 checksum of “22ner_calculator” to get:
Since crc32 checksums are large integers we mod the result by 100 to get a value between 0 and 100:
Finally we stated we’re checking this user and feature with a percentage of 30:
At last Flipper tells us, “Yes, Alex, this user is enabled for this feature based on this percentage”:
Hopefully you’ve learned something and have a new-found appreciation for randomness! Be sure to check out the actual source code as you’re armed with enough knowledge to know exactly how these features are implemented.

Win The King’s Superbird … After They Finish Building It!
Just four months into the Smithfield/Albertsons Superbird build, it’s already rounding Turn Four at Daytona and blasting toward the finish line. The bulk of the heavy labor is already in the rearview mirror, as the Petty’s Garage crew has worked tirelessly to transform a garden variety ’70 Road Runner into a Pro Touring Superbird. While the substantial bodywork that comes with the cloning process has been completed, a bare shell is a far cry from a finished car. Before taking the checkered flag, the long to-do list includes installing the engine, drivetrain, suspension, fuel system, cooling system, brakes, and interior. With just a couple of weeks to go before hitting the display booths at Monster Energy NASCAR Cup races around the country, it’s time for the Superbird build to hit high gear.
Project Rewind
Before diving into the good stuff, here’s a quick recap of what’s gone down so far. Unlike most sponsors, Smithfield Foods and Albertsons aren’t content merely buying sticker space on a stock car. To follow up last year’s incredible ’67 Hemi Belvedere giveaway car—a build dedicated to Richard Petty’s 27-win 1967 NASCAR season—Smithfield Foods decided to build a Pro Touring rendition of a ’70 Superbird powered by a Gen III Hemi. Nothing gets fans excited like a good giveaway, and Petty’s Garage was once again commissioned to turn concept into reality. Right before Christmas 2016, the crew got to work.
The early stages of the build involved replacing the B-Body’s rotted-out quarter-panels, rockers, framerails, trunk pan, and floor pan. After attaching an assortment of Janak Repros fiberglass pieces, the garden variety B-Body started looking like a certified wind-cheating machine. Since welding fiberglass to steel isn’t an option, securing the nosecone, rear wing, fender scoops, window plug, and fender extensions to the stock sheetmetal required lots of panel-bonding and riveting.
Genetically engineering a plain-jane B-Body with Superbird DNA isn’t as straight-forward as bolting up some fiberglass bits here and there. Even after spending nearly 100 hours on the conversion process alone, the bodyshop wasn’t out of the woods just yet. The final prep work and paint consumed yet another 250 hours of painstakingly cutting and filling of fiberglass panels, block sanding, cleaning, sealing, painting, and buffing. In other words, putting the finishing touches on the stunning wind-sculpted body ain’t easy.
Home Stretch
Unlike reality TV car builds that rely on camera trickery to hide shoddy build quality, the Smithfield Foods Superbird doesn’t have such a luxury. That’s because it will be subject to public scrutiny for months at various Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series races throughout the race season before Smithfield turns the keys over to one lucky winner at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. With just four weeks left before deadline, Petty’s Garage put on an impressive display of maintaining quality while under the gun. “A restoration like this typically takes nine months to a year. In order to get it done in four months, we’ve had a team of guys working on it around the clock,” says Brian Witcher of Petty’s Garage.
In recent weeks, the team has made significant progress by dropping in a Mopar Performance Gen III Hemi, a Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) overdrive trans, Wilwood disc brakes, QA1 shocks, a TTi exhaust system, Vintage Air A/C, and General Tire’s all-new G-Max AS-05 rubber. “We’re finally down to one page of items on our to-do list, and one cart of parts,” Brian exclaims. “All that’s left is installing the interior, head lights, and turn signals before buffing and polishing the car one last time.”
Got Bacon?
Chowing down on bacon strips and sausage patties is something most red-blooded Americans do anyway, so why not get rewarded for it? That’s how easy it is to enter to win the Smithfield Foods’ Superbird. Simply purchase three Smithfield pork products at any one of Albertsons family of grocery stores (2,500 total), then text a pic of your receipt to Smithfield, and you’re automatically entered to win. While the fine details of the giveaway ceremony haven’t been finalized just yet, there’s a good chance that they will mirror last year’s event, where a lucky group of finalists were flown out to the season-finale Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Each finalist received a key, and met Richard Petty on stage. To cap off the theatrics, the finalist with the lucky key that started the car went home in a badass Mopar. Will you be the lucky winner?
NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. Starts on 8/20/17 and ends on 10/3/17. Open to legal residents of AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, ME, MD, MT, ND, NE, NH, NJ,NM, NV, NY, OR, PA, RI, SD, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, and WY, who are eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry. Limit: Maximum of 5 entries per person during the Sweepstakes Period, regardless of method of entry. To enter without making a purchase, and for complete Official Rules, visit www.WinTheKing.com. Hot Rubber!
As this story is written, General Tire is quite literally releasing its first batch of G-Max AS-05 tires to the public. The Smithfied Foods Superbird will be one of the first cars to put them to the test, which is quite fitting considering the car’s multi-faceted skill set. Representing the pinnacle of the General Tire high-performance street tires, the G-Max AS-05s are designed to offer excellent all-season performance while also optimizing tread wear.
The trick is a combination of technologies General Tire calls SmartGrip and StabiliTread. SmartGrip uses stable shoulder blocks to maximize grip, and a strong center rib to enhance steering response. Additionally, the AS-05’s silica-rich, all-season compound and water-siping design provide excellent grip in the rain and snow. StabiliTread technology, on the other hand, optimizes the tread pattern to provide a wider footprint and tread stiffness. According to General Tire, this improves tread life by 20 percent compared to competitors’ offerings.
In addition to tread wear indicators, the AS-05 tires also incorporate built-in visual alignment indicators that alert drivers when the wheels are out of alignment. For those who want to get a set, the Z-rated G-Max AS-05 tire is available in most popular sizes ranging from 195/50R16 to 265/40R22.

Tight deadlines require careful planning, so Mopar Performance sent out a 392ci Gen III Hemi (part No. MOP68303090AA) during the early stages of the Superbird build. Essentially the same motor found in the SRT 392 Charger and Challenger, it kicks out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. With a street price of $8,500, it’s a raging bargain.
The late-model Hemi ships complete with a front-sump oil pan, flywheel, clutch, fuel injectors, and coil packs. For ease of installation, Petty’s Garage also ordered an optional front accessory drive (part No. 77072445) that includes an alternator, A/C compressor, and a power steering pump.
Just a few years ago, monkeying around with computers, wiring, and tuning were among the biggest challenges associated with late-model engine swaps. Mopar Performance makes it easy with a pre-calibrated ECU, and an optional plug-and-play wiring harness (part No. 77072454AB).
To check for potential interference issues prior to dropping the motor in the car, the Hemi was first test fit to the stock K-member with a set of Mancini Racing engine mounts. Designed specifically for Gen III Hemi swaps, they position the motor far back in the engine bay for optimized weight distribution.
Although the crate Hemi package includes factory exhaust manifolds, Petty’s Garage replaced them with a set of TTi 1.75-inch long-tube headers for some extra grunt. An optional Mopar Performance 45-degree oil filter adapter (part No. 77072447) buys extra clearance between the filter and K-member.
Since the Chrysler A518/46RE often creates interference issues with factory torsion bar crossmembers, they have never been popular with Mopar guys seeking an overdrive automatic. Silver Sport Transmissions’ A41 is a bulletproof GM 4L60E that has been adapted for Mopar applications.
Rated at 550 lb-ft of torque, SST’s A41 transmission kit includes a bellhousing, flexplate, lock-up torque converter, oil cooler, dipstick, throttle-position sensor, crossmember, speedometer cable, driveshaft, EZ-TCU trans computer, and a wiring harness.
The mandrel-bent TTi mild-steel headers fit around the SST A41 overdrive like a glove. By snaking over the steering center link, they’re designed with ground clearance in mind. Thick 3/8-inch flanges and a one-piece design (no slip tubes) prevent leaks. Most importantly, the vastly improved scavenging ability of long-tubes over the stock manifolds will easily boost the Hemi’s output to over 500 hp.
In order to route the wiring harness from the trans to the A41’s transmission control unit inside the cabin, technicians cut a two-inch hole at the top of the trans tunnel with a hole saw. After touching up the edges of the cut with a paint pen, a grommet was fitted into the hole before feeding the harness through.
The SST overdrive kit includes a crossmember and a polyurethane mount to position the trans at just the right angle. By allowing the crossmember to dangle from one side, technicians can simply swing it up into place beneath the tailshaft housing once the engine and K-member are in position.
Installing the motor and K-member from the bottom of the chassis (bottom decking) takes patience, but it’s hardly rocket science. Just square the motor up inside the engine compartment and slowly lower the body down while checking for interference.
As with any engine swap, the only definitive way to check for interference is to actually test fit the motor. The compact Gen III Hemi fit without much fuss, only requiring some minor clearancing for the bellhousing where the firewall pinch rail meets the floor pan. The pre-bent SST trans cooler lines fit perfectly.
Lining up the bolt holes on the K-member and the framerails is one of the easiest ways to ensure proper alignment. The K-member attaches to the frame with four bolts. For increased oil capacity, the stock oil pan was replaced with an 8-quart Stef’s billet aluminum unit.
Although the 6.4L Hemi fit nicely in the B-Body’s engine bay, the back of the intake manifold sat too close to the firewall. A sheet of paper just barely fit between the intake and firewall, which means the two would most certainly rub together with the engine running.
The factory 392 Hemi features a variable-volume intake manifold that’s actuated by a rear-mounted servo. Petty’s Garage removed the servo from the back of the intake manifold, then fabricated a custom plate to lock the runners into their high-rpm position. This provided the necessary clearance to prevent the intake manifold from contacting the firewall.
When mixing and matching numerous components from multiple manufacturers, part-to-part interference is inevitable. The TTi headers required a small dimple in order to clear the Mopar Performance starter wire.
The plug-and-play Mopar Performance wiring harness comes with all the necessary connectors for the factory sensors, and simply plugs into the ECU. After mounting the computer on the interior firewall near the heater box, technicians hooked the harness up to power and ground, then wired it into the factory ignition switch.
The engine harness includes a fuse box that houses relays for the fuel pump, cooling fan, starter, and ignition system. Using relays are a great way to power high-amp accessories without placing additional stress on the electrical system.
Keeping the Hemi cool is a two-row C&R radiator and dual Spal electric fans that use an integrated shroud. It attaches to the core support with custom aluminum brackets welded to the end tanks.
Petty’s Garage took a keep-it-simple approach to updating the Superbird’s underpinnings. The car’s prior owner had recently rebuilt the suspension with stock replacement torsion bars, steering linkage, leaf springs, control arms, spindles, bushings, and ball joints. As such, the hardware was cleaned up and re-used.
Controlling body roll up front is a QA1 sway bar. Forged from 4130 steel, it measures 1.25 inches in diameter and boasts 3/16-inch thick wall tubing. The Stef’s mid-sump oil pan fits beautifully around the stock steering linkage.
Out back, the Petty’s crew put the money where it counts by upgrading the chassis with big Wilwood disc brakes and double-adjustable QA1 shocks. The front clamps (part No. 140-10816) feature 14-inch slotted rotors, and forged six-piston calipers. Plenty of “whoa!” to match the “go!”
Out back, the factory drum brakes have been replaced with Wilwood 12.88-inch slotted rotors and four-pistons calipers (part No. 1409222). The two-piece rotors incorporate internal shoes located behind the rotor hats that function as a concealed parking brake.
Super Stock leaf springs matched with QA1 double-adjustable shocks yield a simple yet effective rear suspension system. The low mass of the QA1 shocks and aluminum-intensive Wilwood brake hardware help reduce unsprung weight.
The beauty of stock engines with tame camshafts is that they generate sufficient vacuum to operate power brakes. The stock vacuum booster works in concert with a Wilwood master cylinder and proportioning valve.
The TTi exhaust system (part No. B25MNM6870) includes 2.5-inch collectors, intermediate pipes, an H-pipe, over-axle pipes, and tail pipes. They attach directly to the three-bolt flanges on the TTi headers. All the seams were welded to prevent leaks.
The TTi pipes were matched to a set of dual 2.5-inch MagnaFlow mufflers. The TTi kit comes with rugged hangers that support the mufflers right before the over-axle pipe. The intermediate pipes tuck into the driveshaft tunnel, directly alongside the steel SST driveshaft, to improve ground clearance.
To convert the old carbureted fuel system for EFI duty, the original tank got replaced with a stock replacement unit that is fitted with a high-pressure Walbro in-tank fuel pump. A -6AN braided steel line provides the fuel supply. To assist with heat protection and for a cleaner appearance, the fuel line is housed inside aluminum tubing.
To clean up the engine compartment as much as possible, the engine and transmission computer are both mounted on the interior firewall, behind the Vintage Air A/C system. The turnkey Gen IV SureFit A/C system (part No. 571064) includes the evaporator assembly, coil, condenser, in-cabin controller, ducting, brackets, and A/C lines. Although the stock Hemi compressor was adapted to fit, the Vintage Air kit also includes a compressor.
The Vintage Air condenser attaches to the factory bolt holes in the radiator core support. The oversized SST transmission cooler attaches to the condenser using plastic ties, and provides plenty of surface area to keep fluid temperate at bay.
For seamless operation of the gauges, Petty’s Garage integrated the gauge harness into the factory wiring harness. The gauges connect to the factory dash harness, which then connect to the factory main harness at the firewall.
A full bevy of Auto Meter gauges fit neatly into a Classic Dash instrument panel. In addition to a speedo and tach, the panel houses gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, voltage, and fuel level.
To keep the interior nice and quiet, a layer of HushMat sandwiches the floorboard and carpet. In the coming weeks, the rest of the interior—including the seats, door panels, and belts—will be re-installed as well.
Throughout the entire build process, Richard Petty regularly checked in to see how the Smithfield Foods Superbird was coming along. As the man who made the original Superbird race cars famous, The King has a unique perspective on how to make tribute cars as close to the real-deal winged warriors as possible.
With most of the mechanical work out of the way, Petty’s Garage redirected its attention to assembling the rest of the body. The next time you see this car, it will be running, driving, and ready for its new owner in November!
There’s good reason why the Smithfield Superbird’s tires hadn’t arrived in time for our story deadline. That’s because the car will wear General Tire’s brand new G-Max AS-05 rubber, which wasn’t released to the public until the day this story was finished (read more about them in the sidebar). The Superbird’s Z-rated, all-season tires will measure 225/40R19 up front and a Hellcat-sized 275/40R20 in the rear.
