A caring nation, together
From a small fishing village to a cosmopolitan city today, the building blocks of our nation were laid on a solid foundation of care through selfless acts by Singaporeans from all walks of life. Some of these people include Mr Tan Tock Seng, who built a hospital for the sick and destitute in the mid-1800s, and Ms Daisy Vaithilingam who created the Singapore Association of Retarded Children (SARC) for children with mental and physical disabilities in 1962, now known as the Movement for Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS).
Everyday acts of care
It is together that we must continue building on this legacy for a better future. However, acts of care need not be exaggerated. Each of us can contribute to a better Singapore through simple gestures. Take Ibrahim AL, Jared Chew and Justin Chua for example – who all went out of their way to help someone in need. Ibrahim helped an elderly man find a home, Jared spends his free time helping people with disabilities to engage in sporting activities, and Justin kindly drove the extra mile to reunite an elderly passenger with her lost wallet. Such acts may seem small, but it certainly warms the hearts of the recipients.
Volunteering with the community

Apart from everyday acts of care, consider volunteering with the community. It also doubles the fun when done with your family! Do not limit yourselves when exploring organisations and causes to contribute to. Explore common interests as a family and skill sets you are able to offer together. For instance, should heritage and culture be of interest, volunteer your time at HeritageCares! As volunteers, you will facilitate heritage trails and programmes for at-risk children and youths, persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Other volunteering opportunities include the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP), which you can volunteer in many different ways. For example, you can volunteer your skills and assist in design work, administrative tasks and even event photography and videography. Try using the SG Cares App to find a volunteering activity suited for your family.
Volunteering as a family also presents multiple benefits:
Forge stronger bonds with one other
Working together gives you the opportunity to better understand your family members. Besides the need for teamwork and communication, it provides parents a platform to inculcate important values and become role models for your children. A volunteering experience creates shared memories with loved ones to look back on.
Develop useful skills in your children
Apart from developing social skills, the interaction with others through volunteering will instil in children a sense of responsibility, how to work as a team and pick up practical skills such as problem solving. These skills help better prepare them for the future.
Looking to volunteer as a family? Look no further!
Begin your journey of care for the community and join us at the SG Cares “Celebrating Our Culture of Care” in early March at JCube! Be inspired by history and everyday stories of care that organisations and individuals have taken to build Singapore today. Make sure you exercise your creativity at the free mural making workshop, which will showcase over 200 years of Singapore’s culture of care. You can also make birthday cards and party hats, which will later be gifted to residents of Moral Welfare Home, Sembawang Home and AWWA shelter. Do not miss this opportunity to learn about Singapore’s history while giving back to the community as a family!

How you can indulge in your favourite winter sports and NOT return home with injuries
Tumblr media
You’ve booked the week in Niseko or Zermatt, bought the coolest ski pants and are looking forward to taking in the beauty of nature as the sun sets over the mountain. But how much preparation have you done to make sure you return from your snow break with your health (and ligaments, and bones) intact? Here are some easy ways you can help prevent injuries when you’re enjoying winter sports.
Keep yourself fit Skiing and snowboarding might look effortless to spectators – how hard can it be to slide down a hill, after all – but they’re actually a strenuous workout. They use almost all your muscles, especially your knees and bum, so it’s a good idea to do some strength training for a few months before your trip. Winter sports are also a tough cardiovascular workout, which means if you’re unfit, you’ll get more tired and be likelier to fall. In short: start your workout regime before you hit the slopes.
Getting to know your body Listen to what your body tells you. Often, larger problems begin with the onset of minor aches and pains. However, the tendency to ignore or wave them off as temporary ailments may lead to long-term issues. Gain knowledge and greater clarity on your body’s musculoskeletal health by consulting a professional. Simply get a referral letter from your GP. The physiotherapist at the rehabilitation centre will be able to access your body’s current condition: Identify the areas you are lacking in, for example, point out which muscle groups to train, the type of posture to observe and many more.
Get the right equipment Whether you’re buying or hiring your equipment, it should be fitted by a pro. You need advice on the length, style and flexibility of ski or board – which best depends on the type of terrain you’ll be on as well as your ability. Boots must be properly fitting, and poles must be the right length. Even your socks matter because if they rub or chafe, that can affect the way you move. And it’s a good idea to wear a helmet. It won’t stop you getting injured but it can massively reduce the severity of head trauma.
Tumblr media
Learn your lessons If you’re an absolute beginner, it’s essential to head to school before you unleash yourself on the slopes. A series of three one-on-one sessions is usually enough to get you feeling confident. Even if you’re an experienced skier or boarder, you can benefit from a refresher (especially if you ski or snowboard only once a year).
Take it easy You might feel ultra confident after a few lessons and half a day on the slopes, but it’s best to stay on the easier runs for a while until you’ve completely mastered them. And don’t battle to stay upright. If you feel yourself fall, let yourself go. Tensing up and resisting can actually cause injuries to your ligaments.
Follow the rules There will be a code of conduct posted around the resort, covering things like how to behave around ski lifts, ensuring you don’t rest in blind spots, staying in control and colliding with fellow skiers thereby causing unnecessary fractures and tears. Learn and follow the code – not doing so can be dangerous for you and other skiers.
Know when to quit It’s tempting to always head for just one last run, but the more tired you are, the more likely you are to get injured, especially if it’s getting dark. Take regular rests through the day, too.
Tumblr media
Seek professional assistance It is easy to ignore pain when you are still able to go about your daily routine. It may be your body’s way of telling you to find out what’s causing the pain; be it a recent or recurring injury. Get an accurate diagnosis and right treatment by speaking to a Gleneagles Hospital orthopaedic specialist or physiotherapist. Not all treatment plans require surgery, so remember never ignore aches and pain: Even minor injuries may lead to bigger problems later in life. To make an appointment, click here.

How to find the best volunteering fit for you
Tumblr media

So you’ve decided you want to volunteer. Perhaps you have more time on your hands, want to make new friends or contacts, or it is one of your New Year resolutions. Whatever your reasons, we are glad you’re taking the first step. However, do you know how to kickstart your volunteering journey? Here are four tips to help you with that!
Tip 1: Know your passion
Firstly, think about what your interests and hobbies are. You may think volunteering is all about the recipient, but imagine how much more help you can offer if you participate in a project or opportunity that you are truly passionate about! What makes you feel joy and sparks that passion inside you? Try the SG Cares App which features multiple volunteering opportunities across all kinds of interests. You can use the app to filter volunteering opportunities according to your interests, for example, animal welfare, the environment, sports or the elderly.
Tip 2: Start from the skills you would like to offer/learn
Next you need to think about your skills. Charitable organisations are just like any other – they need help with their accounts, marketing, website management and so on. If you like taking photographs, share your skills with a charitable organization by volunteering as an event photographer! You could even take the opportunity to pick up a new skill. For instance, you could help design simple posters for charitable organizations if you are keen to explore your artistic side.
Tip 3: Fit volunteering into your lifestyle
We all know how busy our lifestyles can get. By spring, all of our new year resolutions would most likely have been buried under piles of work, family commitments and Netflix sessions. But with volunteering you need to consider whether walking away will leave people in the lurch. Be realistic from the get-go about how much you can commit, because for volunteering to work it has to be part of your lifestyle.
You can view location-based volunteering on an interaction map via the SG Cares App and choose between ad-hoc and regular volunteering options. It is easy to find something which will suit your lifestyle. Some organisations even use remote volunteers (web developers or writers for example), so you can even volunteer from the comfort of your couch!
Tip 4: Keep trying until you find one that works

A good match is always rewarding. However, volunteering is not always love at first sight. It could be a case of trying to make things work, or moving on to other opportunities. Either way, it will be a learning journey, and the positive thing is, you are doing a good deed.
Still unsure of how to kickstart your volunteering journey? Visit www.sgcares.sg or download the SG Cares App via the Apple Store or Google Play. SG Cares is a national movement to support building a more caring and inclusive home for all. The SG Cares App provides a complete user experience by connecting users with news and stories about social causes and events they can contribute to, and enable users to quickly, easily and safely give their money or their time.
