fireworks
for 13 days of sasuhina! inspired by that one scene in gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun
sasuke’s confession is interrupted by the bang of fireworks
featuring oblivious hinata, everyone wiggled their eyebrows at the two when they left the new years party to “watch fireworks” but she didn’t catch on
also it’s cold so cape snuggles
They were sitting on a cliff facing Konoha, waiting for the New Year’s fireworks show.
This was it. Sasuke had pined after the Hyuuga heiress for four years and seven months and he was finally going to confess his feelings.
The thought made his face pale and stomach churn, as his mind ran through the limitless terrible scenarios that could occur. The stab of imagined rejection was what kept him from saying anything, but he had mentally prepared for this for an unspeakable amount of time and he was going to do it.
He glanced at the woman sitting next to him.
Hinata was just staring up and admiring the sky, unpolluted by glaring city lights; lavender eyes searching for constellations.
He noticed the absence of her winter parka and how tightly she wrapped her arms around herself. Clad only in a sweater, scarf, jeans, and boots, she was positively shivering.
Scooting closer to her, he asked, “Forgot your coat?”
“A-ah, it appears I l-left it at the party,” she replied sheepishly, the cold weather bringing back her stutter with a vengeance.
“Come here.” His tone left no room for argument.
He lifted an arm, inviting her to share the warmth of his cape. She readily accepted the invitation and let out a sigh of pleasure at the heat. The Uchiha was always so warm, was it because he had an affinity for fire?
“Thanks, Sasuke.”
He didn’t meet her gaze, flustered at the intimacy of the situation. The man simply wrapped the arm around her shoulders, bringing her closer to him.
Upon making contact with her, he shivered and Hinata started to pull away from him, apologizing, “S-sorry! I know I’m cold.”
“No it’s fine,” he quickly pulled her back. “I don’t want you to catch frostbite.”
He couldn’t admit he wasn’t shivering because of her temperature, but her proximity.
A comfortable silence settled between them, as Hinata defrosted and Sasuke had an internal struggle.
Alright, he was just going to rip the band aid. It was now or never.
“Hinata.” His statement was sudden, almost a shout.
The girl in question was startled and looked at Sasuke curiously, waiting for him to complete his thought.
“Hinata... I-”
The abrupt crack of fireworks obscured his words.
“Sorry Sasuke, I didn’t catch that,” she tilted her head and leaned in closer to him. Eyes shining, the various colors of the fireworks played upon her visage. She was stunning. Unreal.
He almost forgot what he wanted to say.
Taking a breath to steel his nerves, he licked his lips and repeated his statement.
“I said I’m-”
Once again, his heartfelt confession was interrupted by poorly timed explosions.
Although she did not hear exactly what he said, his expression was earnest and his stare was boring into hers. The boom was still ringing in her ears but Sasuke’s expectant gaze compelled her to reply.
“I’m glad,” Hinata beamed and raised her voice slightly over the crackles and pops. “I also love the fireworks display!”
His eye twitched. He wanted to Chidori the people setting off the damn things. But her smile was bright and he lost the courage to repeat himself. The dejected man just nodded and offered a weak smirk.
He decided he would take her to the Ferris wheel next time... just anywhere without fireworks.

All I Want for Christmas is You
Follow up to this piece. Alt title: It’s Real, Dammit!
Sasuke felt the weight of the small box in his coat pocket. Hiashi glanced up from the documents he was reading. His invitation for the holiday dinner extended only to Hinata; he stopped going to parties after a certain fiasco last year. He was irritated to see she had arrived with an unwanted guest. “Well?”
He could hear Hinata laughing with her sister in the living room and it filled him with the courage he needed. Clearing his throat, Sasuke approached his desk. “I wanted to talk to you about Hinata.” Hiashi sighed and motioned with his hand for him to continue. “I want to ask for your blessing.”
Hiashi’s eyebrows furrowed. “For what?”
“Marriage.” Sasuke prepared himself for the anger; a shout of indignation or the infamous Hyuuga glare. He was not expecting silence and indifference. “I can provide for her if that’s your concern. I know I haven’t graduated yet but my father is offering me a job while I finish my degree…I love her and we’ve been together for-”
“You both played me for a fool last year and it baffles me that you continue such a charade. It wasn’t funny then and it isn’t funny now,” Hiashi replied. “However, if you plan on ‘surprising’ Fugaku with the same joke, I wish to be present. That might bring me some joy.”
Unbeknownst to him, Sasuke had already informed his parents. His mother was elated and cried with joy. His father merely advised him on how to approach the Hyuuga patriarch; “Don’t let him think you’re not worthy.”
“Dad, dinner’s ready!” Hanabi called.
Hiashi raised an eyebrow as Sasuke blocked the door. “I’m honestly asking for your blessing.”
“You want to marry my daughter?”
“Yes,” Sasuke replied.
“Even though you haven’t dated yet?” Hiashi challenged. “Like I said, it’s not funny.”
“What?!”
“Dad!” Hiashi pushed by the stunned Uchiha whose mind was racing. Did she keep us a secret? She said she told them! It’s been a year for God’s sake!
He hurried downstairs where Hinata waited to walk him to the dining room. Noticing his scowl she grew concerned. She was weary when he asked to speak to her father alone. “What happened?”
“Why didn’t you tell him about us?” Sasuke looked away, knowing that he’d eventually forgive her if she gave him ‘that’ look.
“I did. Many times but he just won’t believe me.” After the first month of dating, Hinata had announced her relationship with Sasuke to her family but they all scoffed. It probably didn’t help that they briefly thought she was already married to him. Her father had let out a sigh of relief when the truth came out, happy that his daughter wasn’t an Uchiha. “I tell him every time we get together but he won’t budge. That’s why I wanted you to come over. Neji brought his girlfriend, if he sees that I invited you to a family dinner as my boyfriend, he’d have to believe me.”
“Tch.” He wrapped his arms around her. “It’s been a year, can’t he let that go? You know, it’s that damn Hyuuga pride of his.”
Frowning, she looked up. “Hey, you aren’t mister humble either.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he kissed her temple. “Let’s go, we have some people to convince.” He hoped her family would finally accept them because he didn’t know how much longer he could keep that ring in its box. His hands twitched whenever he saw it, eager to present it to her. He was hoping to ask her on her birthday which was in a few days.
Hinata supported his dreams and after long talks, he knew what he wanted to major in. They weren’t perfect and argued like any other couple. However he knew that they were in it for the long run when they stayed in their apartment after bitter arguments. Admittedly he was in the wrong many times but even when he wasn’t, he refused to leave without making up. In previous relationships, he was eager to leave a hostile conversation. But it was different with Hinata; they wanted to make things work in the good times and bad.
“Hey, are you okay?” Hinata asked. Sasuke gave her a small smile and held her hand as they entered the dining room. Her grip tightened when all eyes fell on them. Hanabi was the only one who looked somewhat amused; the male Hyuugas were annoyed by the show of affection. But at least Tenten smiled warmly at the couple.
As they ate, Sasuke could feel Neji’s glare and met his eyes. “What?”
“Is no one else going to say it?” He asked, looking around. Tenten shook her head but he ignored it. “Fine. This charade has gone far enough, don’t you think Hinata?”
“Aw c’mon, it was kind of funny to see Dad all riled up,” Hanabi snorted. Hiashi frowned as Hanabi erupted into giggles. “Hey, Neji laughed too. It was the best prank ever.”
“I did not laugh,” Neji lied. Technically he laughed after he found out it was fake, before that he was just as pissed as his uncle. “It wasn’t funny and it has gone far enough. No one’s going to fall for it again so there’s no need to continue with this act.”
Hinata placed a hand on her forehead. “But we really are together. I swear.”
“Do you want me to prove it?” Sasuke asked. Neji rolled his eyes and Sasuke put his hand on the back of her neck, pulling her closer. Neji, Hiashi and Hanabi all had a look of indifference as he kissed her passionately. Tenten sported a blush and looked away.
“You don’t have to be gross about it,” Neji replied. “Fine, ‘you’re together’. Ha ha. Joke’s on us.”
Pulling away, Hinata looked desperately at her family. “B-b-but-”
“Hinata, I get the point. Believe me I do. I’ll tell Toneri you aren’t interested. There’s no need to push this phony relationship any further,” Hiashi said. “Can we have dessert now?” The staff nodded and cleared their plates.
Neji wiped his mouth and shook his head. “I think we should be going. I’m disappointed in this childish behavior, Hinata. And that little marriage proposal you tried to pull won’t work either. You might’ve had better luck saying you were pregnant.”
Hinata slowly turned her head to look at Sasuke, whose hands felt clammy. He ruined it, he ruined the perfect proposal I planned. She knows! He wouldn’t get to see her look of genuine surprise and happiness when he got down on one knee. He’s stuck with this moment, forever.
Sasuke glared at Hiashi who started on the slice of pie. “What the fuck, old man?! Are you an idiot?!”
They all froze, stunned by the outburst. “I asked you…” He took a deep breath, trying to not jump across and strangle her father. ”We’re dating okay?! Get it through you head, Hinata and I are together. We’re living together, which you’d know if you bothered to accept our invitation. And I want to be with her because she’s doesn’t take my bullshit but also supports my dreams. Hell, she is my dream and I want to marry her if she’ll have me.”
“Sasuke…” Hinata buried her face into the side of his arm, nodding softly since she didn’t trust her voice not to shake. He kissed the top of her head as she started to cry.
Tenten started to dab the corner of her eyes with a napkin, emotional over their display of love. “Congradu-”
Hanabi clapped. “That was so good, guys. And those tears? Hinata, you’re amazing. You nearly had me there. Wow.”
“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” Sasuke muttered. Hinata looked up, also stricken with disbelief.
“Unless there are more ‘bombshells’ to drop, we’ll be going,” Neji said. Tenten gave him a look. “Don’t tell me you fell for it. Tenten, sometimes you’re too gullible.”
Hanabi shook her fork at Hinata. “I think I would have bought it if you said you said you dating his brother. That would be more believable than this relationship. Remember the huge crush you had on him?”
Neji sat back down. “Actually I think we can stay for dessert.”
Hinata exhaled with a hint of annoyance. She didn’t feel like staying any longer and they had a lot to talk about. She tugged on Sasuke’s arm but he wasn’t budging.
“You liked Itachi?!” he exclaimed with mix of disgust and anger.
Hanabi shook her head and swallowed the food in her mouth. “Not him, the other one. I called you Sushi lover, remember? God, what was his name? Sasuke, what’s your other brother’s name? It start with a ‘S’.”
Taken back, he looked at Hinata. “I don’t have another brother. Who…?”
“Shisui,” Hinata mumbled under her breath while averting her eyes. His eye twitched. She liked his cousin?! “But it was a long time ago! Hanabi stop laughing!”
“You know, he’s not the worse she could have picked,” Hiashi commented. The man was humble which was unusual for an Uchiha. Shisui was pleasant to talk to at business functions and never let his loyalty to his family cloud his judgement. “I like him and wouldn’t mind if he ‘got married’ to Hinata.” Hiashi started to chuckle.
Sasuke pushed his chair back and walked out. Hinata smiled nervously at her family, departing with a few words. Much to her relief, he was waiting for her. They got into his car and Hinata looked out the window, hoping he wasn’t too upset with her.
He picked up on her anxiety. It wasn’t her crush on his cousin that upset him…much. It was the ruined surprise and the continued reluctance to acknowledge their relationship. Was it really that unbelievable that she chose him? “Hinata?”
She hummed in response.
“I did plan on something special for you so when I do it, act surprised. I put a lot of work into it,” he said. “If you want to, get married I mean. I know it might be too quick but I’ve loved you-” Hinata quickly shut him up with a kiss. “So that’s a yes?”
“Maybe,” she said shyly as he turned on the engine. “We’ll just have to see.”
He smirked, feeling somewhat better. “So Shisui?” Sasuke tried to sound composed but his grip on the steering wheel tightened. Hinata chuckled nervously. “How long did this crush last? He’s kind of old.”
“It doesn’t matter, it was so long ago. I don’t even remember-”
“Hinata.”
“High school?” she said uncertainly. “But it wasn’t a huge crush. He was tutoring me and I thought he was kind and sweet-” Sasuke growled and she cringed. “It didn’t mean anything. I really liked Naruto back then, remember?”
“Right,” he clenched his jaw. “How could I forget?”
Squirming in her seat, she realized that bringing up her past infatuation on his best friend was probably not the best route to divert from her crush on his cousin. “But I love you Sasuke. You’re my dream guy.”
He still huffed as she kissed his cheek.
.
.
After spending the entire day watching movies on the couch, Sasuke looked at his watch and abruptly told her to get her coat. He tried to hide his excitement and she followed him to the park. As they neared the fountain, she could see the candles surrounding the outer edges; water lilies floated on the surface.
He held her hand and Hinata started to tear up when the violinist started to play their song. Sasuke was glad he had chosen the place where they had their first official date. It continued to give him good memories.
“Hinata Hyuuga, will you marry me?”
Sasuke barely got the question out before she flung herself at him, making them fall down. He started to chuckle as she kissed him repeatedly. “Yes! Yes! I do!”
A few people passing by started clapping as they got up but a couple of girls shook their head. “It was obviously staged. I bet they’re doing it to get hits on Youtube.”
Hinata stomped after them but Sasuke caught her in time. “It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks.” Fireworks lit up the sky above and a few spectators wondered where the cameras were placed.
.
.
Shisui didn’t know why Sasuke kept glaring at him. He merely complimented Hinata’s cooking and joked that she would have to make him a pie if her baking skills were equally good.
“Hinata’s not giving you any of her pie,” he hissed. “So back off!” Hinata pulled him away and apologized for Sasuke’s behavior.
“He’s just jealous,” Itachi said as he finished his plate. Sasuke had invited his brother over to celebrate their engagement but didn’t look pleased when he realized Shisui tagged along. Itachi just couldn’t let this opportunity pass him by after Sasuke told him of the disastrous dinner with the Hyuugas.
Shisui snorted. “Well I don’t blame him. She’s quite a catch. Did you see the curves on that body and…” He noticed Itachi’s look. “What?” Shisui felt a hand on his shoulder.
“What did you say?” Sasuke asked in an icy tone.
Hinata returned to a messy dining room where Itachi was holding Sasuke back as Shisui crawled away. She went to help Shisui up but abruptly dropped him as Sasuke became irate. She wrapped her arms around his waist, pleading for him to calm down. Knowing that he’d hurt her if he struggled too hard, Sasuke fumed motionlessly. Itachi picked up Shisui and made their exit.
“He’s not invited,” Sasuke announced. “No one is. It’ll just be me and you.”
“Sasuke…” Hinata slowly let go of him but he wrapped his arms around her, resting his head on the crook of her neck. “Who am I marrying?” He pointed to himself. His heart swelled with happiness whenever he down looked at the shiny ring on her finger. “Exactly. Because I love you. You’re going to be my hubby.”
“I’ll be the best husband.” Sasuke knew he had to control his jealousy but it was hard when he still felt like he wasn’t good enough. Enough people thought so. He picked her up, wrapping her legs around his waist. “I promise.”
They pressed their foreheads together, looking at each other with unmistakable love.
“I know you will.”
*Why did I throw that part with Shisui and Itachi in? Cuz I just gotta.
