I think I’ve had this #IreneReid lp for 20 years. I think I got it at the Salvation Army in Lacey or maybe the Goodwill in Centralia. Either way it was my introduction to Irene. For maybe a decade I didn’t realize she had s 1960s recording career before this lp. Thanks internet. CultureSOUL: Donny Hathaway "Little Ghetto Boy" (1972)

On what would have been his 68th birthday, a salute to one of my all-time favorites, the glorious Mr. Hathaway. This track "Little Ghetto Boy" is a quintessential tale of the low-income/urban youth experience in post-civil-rights Black America. One could say that the hip hop movement was created out of the world so eloquently described in his mid-70s classic. It's a soul track that, because of its importance and cultural resonance, deserves repeated listens.
