RUSSIA: With the only aircraft carrier stopped in reform, MiG-29K embarked fighters were sent to the war in Ukraine

The Russian navy embarks its new Mikoyan MiG-29KR fighters aboard its only aircraft carrier. But the elderly - and unreliable - Admiral Kuznetsov has been under renovation since 2017. So the Russian Navy gave new use to the jets of the embarked squadron.

The 1980 vintage flattop aircraft carrier of 58,000 tons may never return to frontline service, effectively stranding its twin-engine supersonic MiGs.

The Navy may have found another use for some of the approximately 22 MiG-29KR survivors of the 24 that the fleet acquired from 2013: according to the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies, it unfolded them to Crimea. From there, they supposedly hunt Ukrainian navy boats.

The new MiGs, which have multifunctional capability with modern air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, were left out of the first 18 months of Russia's 23-month broader war against Ukraine. Perhaps already last fall, at least two MiG-29KR belonging to the 100º Independent Ship Fighter Aviation Regiment were flying from the Saky air base in Russia-occupied Crimea.

The medium-weight MiGs allegedly flew alongside Russian navy Sukhoi Su-30SM heavy fighters on patrols in search of Ukrainian navy boats operating in the western Black Sea.

After sinking the frigate Hetman Sahaydachniy, the Ukrainian navy no longer has large armed warships. What it has are many missiles, air and sea drones and small fast boats.

Manned boats carry Ukrainian commands in attacks on Russian-controlled territory. Robotic boats loaded with explosives infiltrate the ports to attack Russian warships.

A supersonic fighter versus a small boat may seem like an unfair fight, but the crews of Ukrainian boats usually carry ground-to-air missiles fired in the shoulder. In August, a Ukrainian crew hit a Russian Sukhoi fighter, apparently damaging it and forcing it to return to the base.

Despite the danger, do not be shocked to see more MiG-29KRs in the sky of Ukraine. Some of the Russian navy's MiG-29KR patrol the Russian Arctic, but most of the force - more than a dozen jets - may be available for wartime operations.

And it's not as if the MiGs need to board Kuznetsov anytime soon. Although the Kremlin optimistically projects that the aircraft carrier may return to the fleet this year, it is possible that the review will extend until 2025.

There is even a remote chance that Kuznetsov will never return to the fleet. The aircraft carrier has very little real combat power - perhaps too little to justify the risk that the crew must accept every time the geriatric ship sails.

The last time Kuznetsov unfolded off the coast of Syria to attack Syrian rebels in 2016, his air wing lost a MiG-29 and a Su-33 due to faulty detention equipment. The fleet leaders decided that Kuznetsov was not safe for flight operations before the planned overhaul and transferred its air wing - including the surviving MiGs - to an air base in Syria.

2016 VoicePlay summer fun — campers, cruises, costumes, charity, and… cops?

The excitement of the spring months rolled right into the summer. After he'd had a few weeks of concentrated new-dad time, the other guys gathered up Layne and headed to Ohio.

They first returned to Port Clinton for a show at the Lakeside Chautauqua Auditorium, and spent the night at a vintage (possibly haunted) hotel. From there, they scooted down to Dayton to be the featured artists at Camp A Cappella.

Ahoy, mateys

A week later, while the others took care of things at home, Geoff and Earl teamed up with three of their buddies from Echo — Erik Winger, Antonio Fernandez, and Deejay Young — for a quick cruise on the Royal Caribbean Allure to the Virgin Islands. During their time at sea, they crossed paths with Us the Duo, who had just finished opening for the North American and European legs of Pentatonix's world tour.

No rest for the ambitious

They arrived home to an exciting milestone: 100K likes on Facebook! In the meantime, Eli did some session recording work, while Layne and Tony prepped for their next PattyCake video, and Layne worked on an additional side project. (Paternity leave was supposed to be less busy, dude!)

Runnin', runnin'

Once the guys were all together again, they got into production on projects for both PattyCake and VoicePlay for most of August. In between location shoots for "Will.of.Oz", they reunited with Emoni Wilkins to film their video for "I Love Me".

Cruisin'

At the end of the month, the guys grabbed Winger again, and boarded the Royal Caribbean Oasis for yet another voyage. Since they set sail on Geoff's birthday, they had a toast on board.

Almost as soon as they got home, they traded one guest for another, snagging Antonio for the middle leg of an eastbound Panama Canal trip on the Disney Wonder. (Though it seems that they were possibly getting weary from so much travel.) They also seem to have run afoul of the Mexican police on their way home, but I'm pretty sure the getting arrested part was just a joke.

Hop, skip, and a jump

After a few days of rest, they embarked on a series of quick trips. First they flew up to New Hampshire for the UNH A Cappella Fest. Next came a show in Iowa, and then a charity fundraiser in Chicago.

All about those babes

During their next stint at home, they made time for a little hanging without working. Most of the guys let someone else do the singing for once when they attended a local Meghan Trainor concert. The group included Layne, Cyndi, and their older girls; Cyndi's sister Steph and her elder daughter; Earl and Nick; and Tony.

Meanwhile, Eli spent some time with his own family to celebrate his sister's birthday, and Geoff got his domesticity on at home with Kathy.

As summer wound down, VoicePlay prepared for their favorite time of year by finally filming a music video for their arrangement of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" off of their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After".

They closed out September with a cruise on the Disney Magic from Nova Scotia to NYC and back. Since Tony and Layne were deep in production for their next PattyCake project (and Layne understandably wanted some more time at home with the baby), the rest of the guys called on both Winger and Antonio to fill in again.

MD Pallavi & Andi Otto - Songs for Broken Ships - India/Germany collaboration that is also a contender for world fusion album of the year

MD Pallavi & Andi Otto first crossed paths on a theatre stage in India ten years ago. They started collaborating instantly and in 2016 MD Pallavi's mesmerizing vocals for the downtempo raga Bangalore Whispers warmed hearts and ears. Their musical relationship flourished with artistic residencies in Bangalore and Hamburg, their respective hometowns, and a concert tour in Japan. The album presents an interwoven pop-aesthetic vision of the two artists with their contrasting musical backgrounds. It ranges from organically woven folktronica to cut-up disco tracks and acoustic ballads. MD Pallavi is a singer, actress, filmmaker and performer from Bangalore, South-India, where she trained in Hindustani music and poetry since childhood. On Songs for Broken Ships, poems in her native tongue Kannada*, one of India's many languages, are performed over Andi’s alluring production, translating the stories into musical narratives. The poems address topics that are as timeless as the music itself. Social equality is touched upon in Bayalu (written by Bontadevi in the 12th century). Artistic struggles - communicated on An Unwritten Word (Gangadhar Chittala, 1865) - are almost prophetic and the surreal, dreamlike scenario of Clockshop (KS Narasimhaswamy,1958) brings you further inside the sonic journey. Andi Otto is a composer, cellist and DJ based in Hamburg, Germany, He is known for his idiosyncratic and unconventional dance music productions on labels such as Multi Culti, Shika Shika and Pingipung (which he co-runs and curates). For this collaborative experience his dubbed out basslines gently interlock with the 7/4 and 5/4 beats to create a backbone for the instrumentation and expressive vocal timbres of MD Pallavi. His sound design combines graceful acoustic recordings, juxtaposed against modern drum machines, computer generated noise and vintage synthesizers. Wines of the year, 2023

Given the nature of my work and the fine wine folk I am so lucky to rub elbows with on the regular, I taste thousands of wines each year. These are the ones I remember most fondly: the way they opened the world, the way they centred experience, and all the kind souls that shared them with me. 

I will remember 2023 as the year I really shed my ignorance and fell in love with Bordeaux and a year in which my partner and I continued our love affair with Jura Chards and Loire Chenins and entered into a new obsession with the great dessert wines of the world.

This list probably looks unhinged to the non-obsessed haha. Without having a social media outlet these last few years, it feels like some small gesture to the hardworking producers who crafted these works of art to be able to shout them out and thank them for their work. So here were the gems:

We kick started 2023 with our New Year’s Rare and Fine Wine Online auction which concluded last Sunday, in hope our carefully curated collection could bring you some fun to browse over the New Year’s holidays.

In this auction, we had a big focus on kiwi wines, and so did our bidders. This time the shift in interest from old world regions helped our local regions reached the highest sell-through rate across the category. 1998 Te Mata Estate Coleraine got snapped at $223.25, followed by its 2002 vintage at $176.25, and 2016 Bell Hill Pinot Noir was also sold for $176.25, 2018 Kusuda Syrah followed at $164.50.

The highest hammer win of this auction went for 2003 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional at $1175, while 2002 Chateau Mouton Rothschild taking the second place at $869.50. 2001 Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino 3 liter OWC, 1977 Chateau Latour and 1979 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Rose all sold for $587.50, great buys! Carrying on the bubbly note, 2002 Bollinger R.D Extra Brut sold for $423, while 2003 Dom Perignon achieved $352.50.

Some other highlights include 1977 Warre’s Vintage Port sold for $246.75, 2012 Mollydooker Carnival of Love achieved $223.25, 2001 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape reached $188 and Chinese spirit 2018 Moutai Laimao sold for $223.25.

La croisière « à la française » fait son grand retour dans l’Hexagone avec la Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). Disparue de l’horizon maritime depuis l’arrêt de Croisières de France en 2016, ce « revival » est piloté par deux professionnels du secteur, Clément Mousset et Cédric Rivoire-Perrochat, passés notamment par les compagnies Festival, Costa, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Rivages du Monde et Celestyal. Le premier assure le management et la partie commerciale de CFC, le second le marketing et l’opérationnel.

Positionnement adulte et premium

Pour ce beau projet dont les premières croisières sont programmées en février 2023, la jeune compagnie a mis la main sur un navire en cours de rénovation datant de 1993, l’ex-Maasdam d’Holland America Line de 629 cabines, rebaptisé Renaissance dont la capacité sera limitée à 1 100 passagers.

Un paquebot que les deux fondateurs présentent comme « à taille humaine » avec un positionnement adulte, senior et premium.

« Le concept a été élaboré en partenariat avec des TO, des agents de voyages et des clients », souligne Cédric Rivoire-Perrochat, qui met en avant le côté vintage et de la tradition des voyages au longs cours qui sera la marque de fabrique de CFC.

Les clients y retrouveront ainsi les spécificités qui ont fait le succès des croisières 100% francophones avec journaux de bord, noms de lieux à bord, menus, excursions et animations en français. Et même des terrains de pétanque !

Afin de proposer un accès sans aérien, le MV Renaissance sera positionné exclusivement au départ du Havre et de Marseille. Les itinéraires, au nombre de 30 en 2023, seront tous différents afin de favoriser les enchaînements. « CFC ne sera pas en concurrence avec Costa ou MSC car notre paquebot effectuera des croisières plus longues, jusqu’à 11 ou 13 nuits », précise Clément Mousset. Si les tarifs sont dégressifs avec des paliers à 190 et 90 jours du départ, le prix de moyen est estimé à 240 euros par jour et par personne avec les pourboires.

Destiné notamment aux groupistes, un tarif Prio très attractif est également proposé, payable à 100% à la réservation et non remboursable. Les excursions et les forfaits boissons seront en supplément, payables à bord pour les passagers individuels. Si le paquebot est dédié aux plus de 18 ans, les familles seront aussi de la fête avec sept croisières intergénérationnelles » programmées durant les vacances scolaires avec des animations dédiées.

La qualité des itinéraires, plus que le volume 

Des accords seront passés prochainement avec les réseaux et agences online concernant la commercialisation de cette offre dont les ventes débutent cette semaine, le site BtoB devant être opérationnel dans les prochains jours. Présent sur le prochain salon IFTM Top Resa, CFC disposera à terme d’une vingtaine de salariés dont dix commerciaux partagés entre deux directions commerciales, au Nord et au Sud de l’Hexagone.

Une baisse due à la programmation de croisières particulièrement longues en année 2. La première, du 8 janvier au 7 mai 2024, proposera ainsi d’accomplir le tour de l’Afrique en 120 nuits, 28 pays et 50 escales. Si le succès est au rendez-vous, les deux associés épaulés par le fonds d’investissement Cheyne Capital n’excluent pas d’exploiter un jour un second navire.

CFC veut faire revivre la croisière « à la française »

La croisière « à la française » fait son grand retour dans l’Hexagone avec la Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). Disparue de l’horizon maritime depuis l’arrêt de Croisières de France en 2016, ce « revival » est piloté par deux professionnels du secteur, Clément Mousset et Cédric Rivoire-Perrochat, passés notamment par les compagnies Festival, Costa, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Rivages du Monde et Celestyal. Le premier assure le management et la partie commerciale de CFC, le second le marketing et l’opérationnel.

Positionnement adulte et premium

Pour ce beau projet dont les premières croisières sont programmées en février 2023, la jeune compagnie a mis la main sur un navire en cours de rénovation datant de 1993, l’ex-Maasdam d’Holland America Line de 629 cabines, rebaptisé Renaissance dont la capacité sera limitée à 1 100 passagers.

Un paquebot que les deux fondateurs présentent comme « à taille humaine » avec un positionnement adulte, senior et premium.

« Le concept a été élaboré en partenariat avec des TO, des agents de voyages et des clients », souligne Cédric Rivoire-Perrochat, qui met en avant le côté vintage et de la tradition des voyages au longs cours qui sera la marque de fabrique de CFC.

Les clients y retrouveront ainsi les spécificités qui ont fait le succès des croisières 100% francophones avec journaux de bord, noms de lieux à bord, menus, excursions et animations en français. Et même des terrains de pétanque !
