221 - The Front Runner
Tumblr media
We’ve previously discussed the work of Jason Reitman with our Men, Women, and Children episode, and this week we have another Reitman bomb: 2018′s The Front Runner. The film features Hugh Jackman as Senator Gary Hart and dramatizes Hart’s failed presidential campaign that was thwarted by an infidelity scandal. Released on Election Day after a very mild fall festival run, the film posits Hart’s case as the beginning of political muckraking in America, but fails to make a compelling case for that argument or find a pulse on the political climate in the immediate year’s following the 2016 Presidential Election.
This episode, we talk about Jackman’s prestige run in the shadow of Wolverine and his prospects this year with the reviled The Son in a weak Best Actor field. We also welcome Reitman regular J.K. Simmons into our Six Timers Club, and discuss Reitman’s other 2018 release Tully, post-Hart political sex scandals, and Vera Farmiga Phone Acting.
Topics also include Phil Hartman’s Clinton impersonation, current awards season malaise, and our upcoming mailbag episode!

Hollywood vs. Indie: A Battle for Film Awards
The film industry is a rich and fiercely competitive field, with Hollywood blockbusters and independent (indie) films both seeking recognition and accolades. While Hollywood studios possess significant resources and marketing influence, indie films often bring unique storytelling and creativity to the table. This research delves into the awards landscape, critical reception, and film festivals for both Hollywood and indie productions.
Critical reception significantly influences a film’s reputation and its chances of winning awards. According to a study by BBC Culture, indie films often get higher ratings from critics compared to Hollywood blockbusters. This could be attributed to the distinct narratives and character development frequently found in indie films.
Critical Reception
Hollywood blockbusters usually dominate major awards shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes. However, indie films also receive recognition through awards such as the Independent Spirit Awards and honors given at the Sundance Film Festival. As stated by IndieWire, indie films face tough competition from Hollywood productions in prominent categories.
Awards
The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, have been criticized for their tendency to favor Hollywood films over indie ones. Nonetheless, recent years have seen a transformation, with films like Parasite (2019) and Moonlight (2016) winning Best Picture. Independent films still encounter hurdles in obtaining recognition.
The Golden Globes, awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have distinct categories for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. This division allows a greater variety of films, including indie productions, to receive recognition. Recent winners include Green Book (2018) and Lady Bird (2017).
The Independent Spirit Awards, organized by Film Independent, honor achievements in independent filmmaking. Notable recent winners include If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and Get Out (2017).
Film Festivals
Film festivals serve as crucial platforms for both Hollywood and indie productions to showcase their work and gain visibility. According to a study by ResearchGate, indie film festivals are vital for the development and distribution of independent films.
The Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford, is a highly respected platform for indie films. Notable past winners include Minari (2020) and The Farewell (2019).
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is another significant venue for both Hollywood and indie films. Notable past winners include Nomadland (2020) and Jojo Rabbit (2019).
While Hollywood blockbusters often dominate mainstream awards shows, indie films receive their own share of recognition through awards like the Independent Spirit Awards and critical film festivals like Sundance. Both Hollywood and indie productions can utilize these platforms to gain accolades, ultimately enriching the diversity and complexity of the film industry.

Anushka Sharma: From Army Brat to Bollywood Powerhouse
Tumblr media
Anushka Sharma's name is synonymous with elegance, talent, and a strong work ethic. Born on May 1, 1988, in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh [Wikipedia: Anushka Sharma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anushka Sharma), her background is a blend of discipline and artistic leanings. Her father, Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, is a decorated army officer, while her mother, Ashima Sharma, is a homemaker. Growing up as an "army brat," Anushka developed a strong sense of independence and resilience, traits that would later serve her well in the demanding world of cinema.
Anushka's initial foray into the entertainment industry wasn't through acting. After completing her schooling in Bangalore, she pursued a career in modeling. Her striking beauty and confident presence caught the attention of fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, who gave her a coveted spot in his fashion show in 2007. This marked the beginning of a successful modeling career that opened doors to the world of Bollywood.
In 2008, Anushka landed her big break with the romantic comedy "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Her portrayal of a bubbly and spirited young woman captured hearts and established her as a promising newcomer. She followed this success with critically acclaimed films like "Band Baaja Baarat" (2010) and "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl" (2011), showcasing her versatility and comedic timing.
Anushka, however, wasn't content with just playing the quintessential Bollywood heroine. She actively sought out roles that challenged her and allowed her to break stereotypes. Her performance as a gritty hockey player in "Chak De! India" (2007) is a testament to her dedication.
Movies like "NH10" (2015), a dark thriller, and "Pari" (2018), a psychological horror film, further solidified her reputation as a serious actress unafraid to explore unconventional characters.
Anushka's success extends beyond critical acclaim. She has starred in numerous commercially successful films like "PK" (2014), "Sultan" (2016), and "Sanju" (2018), solidifying her position as a top-grossing actress Although she has been on a break from acting since the birth of her daughter in 2020, her upcoming sports biopic "Chakda Xpress," based on the life of cricketer Jhulan Goswami, is highly anticipated.
Anushka's influence extends beyond the silver screen. In 2012, she co-founded the production company Clean Slate Filmz with her brother Karnesh Sharma. This venture allows her to tell stories that resonate with her and champion new talent. She is also a successful entrepreneur, having launched her own fashion line, Nurbaa, in 2016.
Anushka's personal life has garnered significant attention. In 2017, she married Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, and their social media presence makes them one of India's most popular power couples. Together, they are vocal advocates for various social causes, including animal rights and environmental issues.
Here are some interesting facts about Anushka Sharma:
She is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for "Band Baaja Baarat."
Anushka was once listed in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list and featured by Forbes Asia in their 30 Under 30 list.
She is a trained Kathak dancer and often showcases her graceful moves in films.
Anushka Sharma's journey from an army background to a leading Bollywood actress is an inspiration for many. Her dedication to her craft, her willingness to experiment with diverse roles, and her entrepreneurial spirit make her a true force to be reckoned with. With her captivating screen presence, her commitment to social causes, and her ever-evolving filmography, Anushka Sharma is undoubtedly a shining star in the Indian entertainment industry.

Moonlight (2016)
By: Christian Lavarello (THE 112C-01)
youtube
I chose the movie Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins and released in 2016 which tells the story of Chiron through three distinct stages of his life. Chiron is an African American boy growing up in a poor neighborhood of Miami alongside his drug addict mother while struggling with his sexuality and being bullied in school. I remember when I first watched this movie, I felt sorry for Chiron, the main character of this film, and wanted to help him because he was a child who did not have a supportive mother, no friends, was bullied and was lost without anyone to depend on so I thought it would be a good film to write about.
Barry Jenkins is an American filmmaker, writer, and producer who was known for creating lyrical, empathetic films that center on Black characters. After making his filmmaking debut with the short film My Josephine (2003), he directed his first feature film Medicine for Melancholy (2008) for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature. His early work experience included employment as a production assistant at Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Studios.
youtube
After conducting historical research, on this film, it was interesting to find out the director is a straight black man who took the script from the play ““In Moonlight Black Boys Look Bue” by Tarell Alvin McCraney, who tells the story of a gay black man and did an incredible job tuning in with his empathetic and compassion as an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. This idea of compassion and empathy as a heterosexual man directing a movie of a gay black main character made me realize that this film was not just about Chiron struggling with his sexuality; however, this was the vehicle the director utilized to be able to speak to the idea that any sexuality regardless of sexual preference can struggle with masculinity and not just target one audience in particular. A quote from the film in which Kevin asks Chiron, “who is you, Chiron?” and Chiron replies, “I’m me man. I ain’t trying to be nothing else” and this is the pinnacle of Chiron’s pursuit of self and his exploration towards masculinity and its simplicity.
Tumblr media
Although not as profitable as other popular films, Moonlight grossed over $65 million worldwide with $28 million in the United States and Canada and $38 million worldwide versus a budget of roughly $4 million. Being that the plot of the film was controversial for portraying a black queer, lower-class man who often is never the main character of a conventional movie, the film received high ratings overall and numerous positive reviews. The film did have some limitations that prevented younger audience from watching it given its “R” rating and sensitive issues it touched on, but most importantly I believe that a lot of individuals might not have been open to watching the film based on the trailer or plot. The director did an excellent job not only artistically, however also by relying on the famous play that the movie was based on to increase a return on investment.
Tumblr media
Overall, my interpretation of the film has changed after conducting research on historical events during this time and reading reviews from the film that made me aware of certain factors I had not considered while I watched the film for the first time. I believe the most important observation was to find out that all characters in this film were all black and the plot touched on sensitive sociocultural topics that are not discussed frequently all while the fatal use of force by police in America began to be a focus on the news and the public. Aside from the historical events and interpretation of the director’s message, I thought it was a great film and would recommend others watch it.
