have seen the "you really bought a tesla?" post a couple times now and it's another one of those things that I think people often have misconceptions about
1. the cheapest Tesla (model 3) was the world's bestselling electric car from 2018 to 2020, when it was ousted by the 2nd-cheapest Tesla (model Y). the model Y was the single best selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023. they are very popular.
2. the cheapest Tesla is $40,240 new. with the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, a price tag of $32,740 puts it on par with the Honda Odyssey minivan's base price or with slightly nicer trims of SUVs like the Subaru Outback or Toyota RAV4, and only about $100 more than a new Prius Prime. People in California may also qualify for an additional $2000-$5000 rebate for buying one, bringing the price down to $27,740 - just $1000 more than a new Toyota Camry.
3. the concerns about safety are often weighted against an incorrect baseline - so far, current data show that electric vehicles aren't more likely to catch fire in an accident than gas vehicles and are actually less likely to do so (but this is difficult to get solid data on. there's a bunch of articles reporting on a study by an insurance company showing a massive reduction in fire risk but the underlying data are highly suspicious).
4. the big point of distrust that I think is grounded: recalls. some of the 22 (22!) model 3 recalls are ~trivial, like "the driver's side sun visor may be missing the airbag warning sticker", but some are more serious, like "the airbags might not be correctly connected to the car." it seems like a lot of the issues have been addressed on the current (2023-2027) line, but the recurring problems with things ranging from minor software issues to pretty serious function issues are good cause for concern. None of the ones I've read about seem as severe as Toyota's "oops the accelerator gets stuck and your car can't stop moving forward" recall or Ford's "oops the engine explodes" recalls [plural], and even the worst ones are on par with things we've seen before especially from US automakers (glaring at Ford, GM, and Ford again). Ford and GM are both guilty of continuing to use known bad parts for >5 years with (in one case) thousands of fires and (in another) over a hundred deaths. moreover, GM's Bolt EV is under a 100% recall for the 2017-2022 model years for high fire risk and Ford recalled over 100,000 hybrids for fire risk - so is Tesla worse than GM or Ford? I don't know if I'd say that, but I'd really want a car I buy to live up to a higher standard.
in short, the most popular teslas by a huge margin are the two most affordable ones, which are fairly accessible to consumers (especially in California). the risk of a tesla exploding or catching on fire is not, as far as I can tell, higher than other cars (and it appears to be less likely per million miles traveled than some other EVs on the market). teslas still have a bunch of quality issues, and they still have some stupid design choices - but you can easily buy a shittier car for a lot more money, particularly an American-made one.

Toyota Avalon (1995-2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This post will cover the Avalon from the beginning of it's production in 1994 to it's eventual discontinuation in the U.S. by 2022.
1995-1999 Toyota Avalon (XX10)
Tumblr media
The Avalon was first introduced in February of 1994 at the Chicago International Auto Show. The name itself however, originated from a concept car of the same name, which was displayed at the 1991 Toyota Motor Show. The car was introduced as a 1995 model. This Avalon was based on XV10 generation of the Camry. The trim levels for this generation Avalon were the XL and XLS, based on the LE and XLE trim levels respectively.
2000-2004 Toyota Avalon (XX20)
Tumblr media
Although the Avalon was still based on the design of the Camry, it was produced as a much larger sedan for the second generation. For the 2003 model, the Avalon was given a slight facelight, including an updated grille and tailights. There were also minor updates to the interior as well.
2005-2012 Toyota Avalon (XX30)
Tumblr media
For this generation, the Avalon was stylized as a much larger car than the previous two generations. At was at this time that the Avalon also became the first ever Toyota car to use a single piece wiper blade design. The XX30 Avalon also introduced the Touring and Limited trim levels, while the standard trim became fitted with larger 16 inch wheels. This generation was also facelifted twice, once in the 2008 model year, with a newer front end, and once for 2011 with an entire redesign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2013-2018 Toyota Avalon (XX40)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fourth generation Avalon was based on the design of the Lexus ES. Much like the first two generations, the Avalon's redesign was based on the design of the Camry. It recieved a new grille, different headlight and tailight designs, and a touch screen on the interior. This generation also introduced a hybrid variant of the Avalon. For the 2015 model year, the Avalon underwent a facelight that featured a new front grille and an updated suspension system.
2019-2022 Toyota Avalon (XX50)
Tumblr media
The fifth generation Avalon was introduced at the 2018 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in May of that year. This generation also introduced the XSE trim levels, as well as having the XLE, XSE, and Limited trims offered on the hybrid version of the Avalon. In August of 2021, it was announced that this generation of the Avalon was be the last and it was to be discontinued follow the 2022 model in favor of producing the Toyota Crown crossover in its place. Though the Avalon still continues to be produced in China.

My Top 10 Iconic Le Mans Legends
This weekend, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and with 62 cars from different classes gathering around in this centennial milestone as well as special guest stars, rest assured that the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is going to be historical indeed.
Tumblr media
As the whole world is bracing for the centennial running of the legendary endurance race that pushes carmakers over the limit in the name of speed and survival, it's time for me to jot down my top ten iconic Le Mans legends.
10) GR010 - Following the success of their LMP1-class TS050, which propelled Toyota Gazoo Racing to three straight overall titles at Le Mans, Toyota created this competitor to the new Hypercar class, which replaced the LMP1 class after the 2020 season. Complying with Hypercar regulations, the GR010 is powered by a 3.5L V6 twin-turbo engine mated to an electric motor that powers the front wheels, making it a 4WD machine where the petrol engine powers the rear wheels while the electric motor takes care of the front, a drastic change compared to its LMP1 predecessor. Toyota defended its Le Mans success in the new Hypercar class with the #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing car emerging as the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for two years, making it its fifth win in a row.
9) Toyota TS050 - In the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, being the only manufacturer-backed LMP1 racer competing in its class, the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050, piloted by Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, Formula E driver Sebastien Buemi, and Kazuki Nakajima, made a historic victory at Le Mans, marking the second time a Japanese carmaker won Le Mans since the legendary Mazda 787B and the first time a Japanese driver became part of the Le Mans-winning team. In 2019 and 2020, with the latter being the final year for the LMP1 era, Toyota emerged victorious in Le Mans.
8) Jaguar XJR-9 - Built in collaboration between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, Jaguar's Group C competitor is powered by two V12 engines; a 7.0L for the WSPC and a 6.0L for IMSA GTP class. Both produce 760PS of power and 828Nm of torque, while mated to a 5-speed March/TWR manual gearbox, making the XJR-9 capable of hitting a 245mph top speed. A Silk Cut-sponsored Jaguar XJR-9 won the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries, and Andy Wallace behind the wheel.
7) Peugeot 905 - The V10-powered Peugeot 905 cemented the French carmaker to the list of Le Mans winners when it won the legendary endurance race twice in 1992 and 1993.
6) Audi R18 TDi - The Audi R18 TDi is known as the only diesel-powered racing machine that conquered Le Mans three times from 2012 to 2014. Not only that, it has dominated two WEC championship titles from 2012 to 2013. Such achievement proves that diesel is king until dieselgate came and most carmakers are ditching diesel-powered engines for good.
5) 919 Hybrid  - In 2014, Porsche returned to LMP1 endurance racing with their 919 Hybrid and although it didn't fare well in its first run, which led to its 3rd place finish at the constructor's championship at the 2014 WEC season, it came back with a much fighting chance and because of such will power, it managed to win not just Le Mans but also three WEC seasons on the trot from 2015 to 2017. Porsche has left the LMP1 racing program after their three-win streak with the 919, only to make a comeback in the Hypercar class with the 963 racing machine.
4) Sauber-Mercedes C9 - As part of the Sauber-Mercedes partnership, this Group C prototype was introduced in 1987 and its first success can be traced back to the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the #63 C9 driven by Jochen Mass, Manual Reuter, and Stanley Dickens, achieved a win. During qualifying for Le Mans, the C9, with its Mercedes-Benz M119 HL 90º 5.0L Turbo V8 engine with two KKK turbos, achieved a top speed of 248.0 mph (400 km/h) at the Mulsanne Straight of Le Mans.
3) 917K - The Porsche 917K is known as the short-tail version of the legendary 917, a sports prototype race car, and it gave Porsche their first overall wins at Le Mans for two straight years since 1970. Thanks to such success, it even gained a starring role in the Le Mans movie starring Steve McQueen.
2) 787B - Built as an improved version of the 787, it features the same R26B 4-rotor Wankel engine as its predecessor which produces up to 690HP of power. Aside from that, it features carbon-fiber bodywork which resulted in a light, rigid body structure and other improvements. In the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda sent two 787B machines with the race-winning #55 car driven by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert, and Volker Weider. The 787B not only became the first Japanese-manufactured race car to win Le Mans, but it's also the first-and-only rotary-powered race car to win the said endurance race.
1) GT40 Mk. II - Ford's trial-and-error process of creating a racing machine that can crush Ferrari in Le Mans is nothing more of an act of revenge from the Blue Oval following Ferrari's rejection to become part of the Ford empire. Armed with the 7.0L V8 engine producing 485HP of power and mated to a 4-speed gearbox, the GT40 Mk.II from Ford delivered a stunning podium sweep at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, more than enough to crush Ferrari into it. Such achievement has been profiled in the biopic movie Ford vs. Ferrari.
In this centennial running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will it be a milestone for Toyota Gazoo as it's seeking a three-peat in the Hypercar class? Will the return of Ferrari in Le Mans crush Toyota's dreams for a three-peat? Find out as this legendary endurance race unfolds this Saturday, June 10th. Don't miss it!

Now I really do hope it's at least two more years before we buy a battery-electric car
Last week, we won a weird old-car-ownership lottery by having the hybrid battery of our Toyota Prius fail–after about 17 and a half years and just over 126,000 miles. That more than doubled the eight years covered by Toyota’s warranty and comfortably exceeded the warranty’s alternate minimum of 100,000 miles, a threshold we crossed in February of 2018. Back when we bought this then-cutting-edge…

China has positioned itself as the main car supplier in Mexico, with exports reaching $4.6 billion in 2023, according to data from Mexico's Secretariat of Economy.
The Chinese automaker BYD surpassed Honda and Nissan to position itself as the seventh largest automaker in the world by number of units sold during the April to June quarter. This growth was driven by increased demand for its affordable electric vehicles, according to data from automakers and research firm MarkLines.
The company's new vehicle sales rose 40 percent year over year to 980,000 units in the quarter—the same quarter wherein most major automakers, including Toyota and Volkswagen, experienced a decline in sales. Much of BYD's growth is attributed to its overseas sales, which nearly tripled in the past year to 105,000 units. Now BYD is considering locating its new auto plant in three Mexican states: Durango, Jalisco, and Nuevo Leon.
Foreign investment would be an economic boost for Mexico. The company has claimed that a plant there would create about 10,000 jobs. A Tesla competitor, BYD markets its Dolphin Mini model in Mexico for about 398,800 pesos—about $21,300 dollars—a little more than half the price of the cheapest Tesla model.
Prevented from selling their wares to the United States due to tariffs, Chinese EV manufacturers have explored other markets to sell their high-tech cars. However, as Mexico establishes itself as a key market for Chinese electric vehicles, officials in Washington fear that Mexico could be used as a "back door" to access the US market.
That tariff-free access is part of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), an updated version of the North American Free Trade Agreement that, as of 2018, eliminated tariffs on many products traded between the North American countries. Under the treaty, if a foreign automotive company that manufactures vehicles in Canada or Mexico can demonstrate that the materials used are locally sourced, its products can be exported to the United States virtually duty-free.
According to official figures, 20 percent of light vehicles sold last year in Mexico were imported from China, representing 273,592 units and a 50 percent increase compared to 2022. Currently, most of the vehicles imported from China come from Western brands that have established manufacturing plants in that country, such as General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, and Renault.
Mexico is the second largest market for Chinese automobiles worldwide, behind only Russia, according to data from Linked Global Solutions, a company specializing in business between China and Latin American countries.
A Trade War Against China
Both the United States and the European Union have intensified a trade war against China, focusing on automobiles and semiconductor chip production, which have been the subject of investigations for predatory practices, tariffs, and restrictions. This new geopolitical strategy is prompting Western companies to look for alternatives to relocate their factories outside of China, a trend known as "nearshoring."
Concerned about the potential impact on domestic automakers, the US has raised tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles to 100 percent. Canada is also considering implementing its own tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles.
In July, the European Union began imposing additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and, on Tuesday, proposed to increase the rate to 36.3 percent. Faced with this situation, BYD has decided to build a new factory in Turkey to avoid these tariffs.
For the Japanese manufacturers who are lagging behind, the North American market—where Chinese electric vehicles have had little penetration due to these high tariffs—is becoming more relevant. As demand for electric vehicles slows in North America, hybrids from Toyota and Honda are gaining popularity. However, it remains to be seen whether this new interest will offset declining sales in China and other markets.
China entering the Mexican market in the automotive sector is relevant because, for Mexico, automobiles are replacing oil in economic importance. The automotive industry contributes 4.8 percent of the country's GDP, and its exports are the main source of foreign currency income. In addition, it generates 1 million direct jobs and, due to its high impact, creates 3.5 million indirect jobs. In the third quarter of the year, 22 percent of the foreign direct investment (FDI) that entered the country went to this industry.
Mexico, the Export Powerhouse
Mexico rose from fourth to third place among the world's largest automotive exporters from 2022 to 2023, according to data from the World Trade Organization. This advance was driven mainly by a remarkable growth in automotive exports, which registered an increase of 14.33 percent, reaching a value of $189 billion in 2023.
The automotive industry has become the main driver of Mexican exports, accounting for 31 percent of the country's total exports in 2023. This sector has not only sustained economic growth, but has also demonstrated significant regional integration, especially under the framework of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which has favored the competitiveness and modernization of the industry.
Mexico managed to marginally displace Japan and the United States in the world ranking of automotive exporters, moving up to third place. Meanwhile, the European Union remained firmly in first place and China moved up from fifth to second place. This change is largely due to significant growth in vehicle exports from Mexico, which now account for 31 percent of its total exports, consolidating the country as a powerhouse in the global automotive industry. Strong regional integration under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement has also been a key factor in this rise.
The European Union led automotive exports in 2023, reaching a total of $831 billion. It was followed by China with $170 billion, Mexico with $158 billion, Japan with $157 billion, and the United States, also with $157 billion.
These values include exports of light and heavy vehicles, as well as auto parts and automotive components, reflecting the dynamism and competitiveness of these markets. In particular, Mexico's growth in this sector has been remarkable, consolidating its position as an export powerhouse.

Day 98: Sunday April 7, 2024 - "Silver Appreciation Post"
It was a romantic end of trail for Silver and I's run through the universe these past few days. I wasn't feeling the love and loyalty trying to buy a new Toyota hybrid, and one final interaction out on the back lot, provided the omen I needed to pick up and move on from it. As if Silver was saying to get on up outta here. I tipped my hat to Silver on the way out the door, and handed over its title to the foreman in the service shop there. He said he planned to fix it up and keep it for himself and get it back on the road where it belongs. I was so grateful for that. After such a wonderful story together where I got more out of it than I could have ever dreamed, now it winds up in a place to get a new life. Its a bell cow now - with every opportunity to get at least to 300,000 miles. I proudly shared with Toyota, how my Prius has been a legend. From every corner of the country, and every new road we could find.
Its easy to be nostalgic about it - it gave me far more than I could have ever dreamed when my Dad found back in the fall of 2013. After an overnight test drive, and some arm twisting from my Dad, I was indeed getting my wide frame behind the wheel of a Prius. It was - slowly - life changing. Delayed by a deer strike, but on course for fate, I tied a seakayak to the rack in a snow storm and set out on my Grand walkabout. We went west. Me and my Silver steed. And indeed the sun did shine soft on another face - we found our home. We crossed this country in search of bread and love. And found all of it. It was the car that will always be most tied to my identity than any other vehicle. We did big things together - I saw the universe through its mirrors and filters. It took good care of me - always reliable. The car I brought William home from the hospital in is the same special car I rolled out on my walk about in. I'll never forget that. Daddy's car will always first and foremost have been Silver. My special car. I drove it for as long as I could, and when it gave up its ghost in February it didn't owe us a thing. Paid off since 2018 we got 6 more years of good go out of our main car for almost no cost. My Dad agrees, its definitely one of the best used car picks he's ever hit on. Yea, couldnt hardly have been any better. We bought it at 40k miles from a dealer in Lansing, MI. I sold it for cash to a service foreperson in Tucson. And in between we saw some the neatest and very best roads. From Yosemite to the Everglades. From Big Bend of Texas, to Big Sur in California. Places it shouldn't have gone, admitted issues with its headlights, and horn, and yes that might be some white gorilla tape holding that panel together - got that in Tahoe on Labor Day one year. All scars are memorable on this car. This scratch here is from my kayak in the everglades when I still very new in learning how to strap it down, in the first leg of the ramble. And these big scratches here on the front bumper are from the time the car completely shutdown and we couldn't get it up out of the alley and into our backyard, no matter. how. hard. we. tried. It just wouldnt fit - those scars, remind me of that - when the engine and everything was all rebuilt as part of a recall to save the day for us. It always felt like I was spoiled with this car. It was a legend in the way it was steady for me. I had to be convinced by my Dad at first, but I'll always give him all the credit - and especially after we added that sport rack, it was ready to be my adventure-mate. I sang its praises. It had so much room I could live out of it, as I went state to state, literally carrying a dinner table to serve as my mobile remote office. I'd pull it out and setup shop in each new place I'd land in. That Prius, thought of as a little car, had more room than most little SUVs. I was proud of it - and the story we were telling together, seeing the country, giving others the permission to do it, in a way that I never had. I'd like to think that somehow I made a difference, out there in my white Prius.
Some of the stickers, still on it today, were there from the beginning in October 2013. The 142 Into the Wild tag, the old english D. The Michigan Love. Later we'd pick up a Bernie Sticker in Vermont, and of course a Biden sticker - which shouldnt surprise people to see on a Prius in Tucson, though it always seemed to surprise them when they saw me behind the wheel - not what they expected! And I love that. -that maybe we reshaped some ideas around going smaller and more sustainably in the effort to simplify and enjoy the expeirence. It was the perfect car. For all of that. And for me and for that time. It helped light the spark. It was part of the manifestation, that led me here. To my fate, and my family. It has a spark of that. Its easy to be romantic about the connection to such an inanimate thing - a machine - a computer. I gave it a loving goodbye and loving place to land. I'd done my part, and ended that story.
Id spend the day writing reviews in its honor, and researching Subarus before working to settle on a new family car, the Ascent. By week's end we'd have our names on one in transit and figuring out financing. A new story starting in a more exciting and energized way that feels very right. Just had to close that last circle first. I'll be a very lucky man, if I ever have a better car than Silver - I just can't imagine it will ever be possible to catch that magic twice. The car I left in, found love in, brought my son home in. It gave me everything.
Song: Josh Ritter - Roll On
Quote: “I much prefer the sharpest criticism of a single intelligent man to the thoughtless approval of the masses.” ― Johannes Kepler
Not ALL of these miles were in Silver, of course - some pre-dated the Prius, and some tracks were in rentals. BUT Oh, So, many of these tracks were in the Prius at some point.

ESG Ratings and the Future of Electric Passenger Cars
Sustainability for mobility has prompted electric passenger cars industry players to prioritize environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Heightened demand for decarbonization and the need to bring sustainability perspectives into management have encouraged incumbent companies to foster their ESG strategies. Climate change response has become global, suggesting an emphasis on the environment throughout the value chain, including design, manufacturing, procurement, logistics and disposal.
Premium automotive brands have shifted their attention toward sustainability to improve customer trust, boost compliance, enhance investor confidence and bolster brand reputation. A transition towards electric brands comes against the backdrop of soaring inflation, supply chain disruption and higher interest rates. In an unexpected turn of events, the exorbitant price of lithium propelled production costs for EVs; Russia’s Ukraine invasion and surging energy prices have had an overarching influence on the global economy.
AB Volvo Redefines Scope 3 Emissions for Consumer-Driven Culture
Although 2022 was a year full of challenges for automakers, 2023 has promised to provide compelling opportunities to navigate ESG strategies. Predominantly, AB Volvo has taken a giant stride to combat climate change—contemplating minimizing scope 1 & scope 2 emissions by 50% by 2030. The Swedish multinational company aims to cut scope 3 emissions by 40% per vehicle Km from trucks and buses, respectively, and 30% from construction equipment by 2030. The automotive giant has upped its efforts to do away with conventional energy sources and adopt renewable sources. During 2022, there was a 32% reduction in tailpipe emissions per average vehicle (vis-à-vis 2018 baseline). The company is gearing up to develop renewable electricity for vehicle charging, alluding strong demand for bio-based materials.

Toyota Prioritizes Social Sustainability
Workplace safety, reduction in accidents and diversity are shaping the future of transportation as automakers inject funds into state-of-the-art products and services. With the demand for personal vehicles soaring, sustainable development has become invaluable to creating a prosperous society. To illustrate, Toyota Australia has powered 7,883 solar panels to its Altona Toyota Parts Centre, which produces 2.5MW. In FY 2022, the auto giant incentivized Toyota and Lexus customers to recycle 1,954 hybrid batteries to foster battery recycling. The automotive brand donated USD 3.4 million to community partners working in sustainability, education, traffic safety, social justice and the environment. Moreover, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a Joint Venture between Toyota and Kirloskar, trained around 43,673 supplier members to boost environment and social performance.
Mercedes-Benz Ups Governance Stewardship
Decision-making bodies have exhibited concerted efforts toward transparency, ethics & compliance, robust corporate governance and board diversity to bolster their ESG performance. In 2021, Mercedes-Benz made a resource conservation policy to minimize the energy consumption per vehicle for cars by 43% and 25% for Vans by 2030. The Luxury vehicle company has introduced supply chain policies to allow purchasers to track material data with the help of blockchain technology. The automotive brand has propelled its diversity and equity portfolio to keep up with the Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and reduced inequalities. As of December 2021, Mercedes-Benz had 22.5% of women in senior management positions, while the Board of Management had 3 women and 5 men.
The competitive scenario indicates that forward-looking companies could focus on organic and inorganic strategies to expand their global footprint. In doing so, well-established players will likely invest in technological advancements, innovations, product offerings, collaborations, R&D activities and mergers & acquisitions. The electric passenger cars market size stood at USD 120.81 billion in 2020 and will witness a healthy CAGR of 32.5% between 2021 and 2028. The outlook suggests that the sustainability and success of automakers could depend upon sound corporate governance, bullish environmental targets and social sustainability.
