Reliability Survey from Britain’s leading new car buying platform and consumer champion. Feedback from more than 16,000 car owners was analysed to find the country’s most dependable 178 models and 30 brands, from nearly new cars to those aged up to five years old.  This year, a record six models achieved a score of 100%: the current versions of the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Convertible and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the previous-generation Dacia Sandero and Honda HR-V.  At brand level, Lexus and Dacia models were hailed as the most dependable for new and used buyers, while Fiat and Land Rover achieved the lowest scores.   Lexus gained an overall rating of 98.7% and none of its vehicles scored lower than 98.4%. Budget brand Dacia also impressed with a 97.3% overall rating, demonstrating that you don’t have to break the bank to buy a dependable model. In contrast, Fiat had the least reliable cars, gaining an 82.0% rating from owners, while Land Rover and Ford were second and third worst for reliability. Hybrids were rated as the most durable type of car, with an average class reliability score of 96.9%. The best performing hybrid was the Lexus NX (2014 – present), which managed a 99.8% score, while hybrid variants of the BMW X5 (2018 – present) were rated least reliable, with 89.7%. Luxury SUVs performed the worst in the study, achieving an average class rating of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan (2014 – present) bucked the trend, managing a creditable 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) received the lowest score in this class with a 72.1% result. Owners were asked whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they cost, with the overall score expressed as a percentage.  Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% had experienced a fault with their car in the past year, with 85% of faults repaired free of charge. For 7% of drivers, the repairs cost between £101 and £500, while 2% had to pay more than £1500 to get their car back on the road. A third of cars remained driveable and were fixed within a day, while 25% could be driven but took more than a week to repair.  What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The UK’s used car market is currently booming, making it all the more important that people know which models will be reliable. i’ve been thinking for a solid 48 hours now about what car claire would drive in @cambionverse assuming she wanted to get one of her own. i’m just gonna go with my immediate first instinct which is the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

here’s why (with the disclaimer that i may be pulling half of this out of my ass):

this car was last released in 2012. i’m assuming claire would prefer a used car over a new one for a couple reasons: 1) money and 2) paperwork. 

you can find a used 2012 for relatively cheap.

mitsubishis, on the whole, are also relatively cheap to maintain. they’re near the bottom of this list of cheapest cars to maintain over 10 years.

if you’re concerned about maintenance costs, you’re better off with this car than a high performance car like the lancer evolution

you can also mod this car for relatively cheap if going fast fast is a thing you’re interested in. it’s performed well on the track, not that claire is interested in racing necessarily, but it’s nice to know that you can speed that shit up if you want to

the evolution definitely has its own following as far as performance goes, and for good reasons, but imo you have to mod it heavily before it starts looking cool, and again, money

it comes in coupe or convertible. convertibles are not my cup of tea but it sounds like they’re claire’s cup of tea exactly

imo, the style is dated but it’s inexpensive to buy and maintain, it’s small and fast, and it’s not so flashy that it’ll draw unwanted attention

since cambionverse is basically happening in real time/very near future rn (yes? i think so), claire could literally get a “future car,” which i think is so cool. i’ve been casually poking around but i still think claire would opt for a used car instead of a 2017/2018/2019/etc

In the engine room, there’s a brand “Nu” 2.0-liter base engine that delivers 15 more horses and 12 more lb-ft than the 1.6-liter Gamma mill it replaces (for 147 and 132 total). Six-speed transmission choices include a manual and a torque-converter automatic replacing the old car’s dry-dual-clutch transmission. Torque multiplication from the converter allows 18 percent taller gearing in first with roughly equivalent launch feel, but it costs some fuel economy. Despite Atkinson-cycle engine efficiency, the EPA combined ratings drop by 1 mpg with the automatic, 2 mpg with the manual.

The top-spec turbo engine is unchanged, though its automatic option is now a seven-speed DCT (up from six). Interestingly, although the gears are all more closely spaced in the seven speed, the overall ratio spread is smaller than in the former six-speed. Happily, turbo fuel economy increases by 1 EPA combined mpg with either transmission.

I sampled every powertrain variant except the 2.0-liter manual, exploring traffic-free roller-coaster roads in the Texas hill country. The experience shaved 30 years off this grizzled veteran’s automotive mindset.

If you were a little kid longing to drive your cool neighbor’s Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo, Acura Integra GS-R, or Toyota Celica GT-S, the Veloster Turbo R-Spec is those cars for these times. It delivers every bit as much performance, personality, and swagger as those coupes did in their day, adding 21st century tech like Normal/Sport driving modes, engine sound enhancement (which can be turned off!), and a bright, reconfigurable head-up display for monitoring the tach. Worthy of special mention is the B&M Racing machined aluminum shifter and linkage, which feels great in the hand and operates with Honda/Mazda precision.

If the handling feels like the boss of BMW M’s dynamics team came to work for Hyundai/Kia, that’s because he did—developing this car as the basis for Hyundai North America’s first all-out performance model, the Veloster N, due this September. The R-Spec is a rung down from that one, but its body-motion control is exemplary, it steers with linear precision (and slightly artificial feel), and it hangs on in corners at least as well as any Civic Si or Focus ST, yet its ride is remarkably supple (like a BMW’s). Brake pedal modulation and heel-toe proximity to the throttle are both top-notch, as well. More linear, less turbo-lumpy power delivery is my only wish.

Step up to the Turbo Ultimate package with the 7DCT tranny, and the gear ratios allow high-rpm second-gear cornering in the tightest Texas hairpins with a paddle flick into the heart of the torque band in third. Sport mode orders multiple early automatic downshifts when slowing for a curve. This model’s Nexen N Priz AH8 tires lack the ultimate stick of the PS4s, but they scrub without squealing, and front-to-rear roll balance means adept drivers won’t be frustrated by understeer. Ultimate cars also get a handsome asymmetrical black and white interior.

After spending 150 miles in Turbos, the 2.0 feels noticeably slower, though in Sport mode it does its gol-dangedest to deliver at least 60 percent of the driving joy. The engine’s song at high revs is sweet. Wide-open throttle runs are smooth, but part-throttle hill climbs can result in upshifts that take the engine out of its powerband, resulting in busy gear changes. Compared to the twin-clutch unit, paddle shifts happen slower and 3–2 downshifts seemed to be rejected more frequently, but having the paddles is great. Hyundai expects half of buyers to take the 2.0-liter; those folks won’t be disappointed.

Saving the best news for last: pricing. The Veloster opens at $19,385 with standard 7.0-inch CarPlay/Android Auto display, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. The Turbo R-Spec starts at $23,785, and a fully loaded Turbo with the Ultimate package and DCT costs $29,035. Fun fact: That’s at or below the inflation-adjusted prices of a late-’90s Eclipse GT, Integra GS-R, or Celica GT-S. And that third door to let your pals come and go from the back seat? Priceless.

NY International Auto Show puts focus on SUVs, electronic safety aids

The 2018 New York International Auto Show opens next week amid a healthy new vehicle market, a continued shift in tastes toward sport utility vehicles and a growing number of electronic aids intended to make driving easier and safer.

The show opens to the public Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. Carmakers plan to debut at least 60 new or redesigned vehicles either for the first time anywhere or the first time in North America. About a million people usually attend. They will see about 1,000 vehicles in more than 800,000 square feet of exhibit space, according to the event's organizers. Admission is $17, or $7 for children younger than 12. SUVs, especially the smaller, car-based models known as crossovers, dominate the list of new models. "Crossovers and SUVs are the name of the game right now," said Melanie Spare-Oswalt, chief executive of Sayville Ford, Suffolk's largest retailer of the brand. Her most popular model, she said, is the midsize Explorer, followed by the compact Escape. For 2019, Ford has added a smaller SUV, the EcoSport, starting at around $20,000, and has freshened the larger Edge SUV, which starts around $29,000. Sales of SUVs, vans and pickups — collectively called light trucks in industry parlance — accounted for 64.5 percent of new vehicles nationally last year, according to the trade paper Automotive News. The split is about the same in the 12-county downstate area that includes Long Island and is covered by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, sponsors of the Javits show. The split nationally and locally was 50-50 as recently as 2013. However, not everyone expects the shift to continue at the current pace."There are people who still want sedans and coupes and convertibles," says IHS Markit principal auto analyst Stephanie Brinley, based in Michigan. "It's a different driving experience." Lee Certilman, chairman of the Greater New York auto dealers and owner of Nardy Honda in St. James, one the brand's largest Long Island stores, says his Accord sedan, starting at about $24,000 and ubiquitous on Long Island, remains a hot seller."I think there are always going to be people who want cars and don't need SUVs," he said.   New-vehicle registrations in 12 downstate counties including Nassau and Suffolk fell 3.4 percent in 2017 from a healthy 2016 level, according to the dealer association, to about 588,000. The group's figures do not include a relatively small percentage of sales to fleets for groups such as police departments. It would have been worse without light trucks, whose registrations rose by 2.1 percent, while new registrations of passenger cars fell by 12 percent. The dealer group didn't offer a breakdown by county for cars versus trucks, but, in total, Long Islanders registered 229,166 new vehicles last year — 2 percent fewer than a year earlier, the group said. At the 23-store Atlantic Auto Group, Long Island's largest dealership chain, co-owner Michael Brown is optimistic about the market this year, citing new models, especially from Hyundai and Volkswagen, and the expiration this year of a large number of leases written three years ago. "I'm looking for a modest increase, a few percentage points," he said. Last year's car sales were off slightly from 2016, he said. John Rizzo, chief economist for the Long Island Association, the area's largest business group, said he's optimistic about sales of big-ticket items this year, including cars. "The positives are a strong labor market and evidence of growing wages," he said. "There's high consumer confidence, and the most recent data suggests consumer spending is strong on Long Island." At Sunrise Toyota in Oakdale, one of the Island’s largest sellers of the brand, owner Jimmy Berg said he expects another strong year, on top of a 5 percent gain last year over 2016 at the Oakdale store and another Toyota outlet he owns in Middle Island. SUVs account for 60 percent of his sales, and the compact RAV4 has replaced the Camry sedan as his best seller, Berg said. "I think the smaller-SUV market will continue to grow," he said. Toyota is expected to unveil at the Javits show a redesigned RAV4, which starts at about $25,000 and competes against popular models like the Escape and Honda CR-V. Other new or redone SUVs scheduled to be at Javits this year, mostly as 2019 models, include the new BMW X2 subcompact, a smaller addition to the German carmaker's lineup and priced around $36,000. Lexus, Toyota's luxury division, has added an optional three-row version of the RX 350L SUV starting at about $53,000, and Subaru is adding a new three-row SUV, the Ascent, starting at about $32,000. Subaru also is expected to unveil its next-generation Forester SUV,  with prices not yet announced. Lexus plans to show its first compact SUV, the UX, unveiled earlier this month at the Geneva auto show, with prices to be announced. Hyundai, Nissan and Mitsubishi also have added new small SUVs: the Kona, starting at about $20,000;  Kicks, starting at about $19,000; and Eclipse Cross, starting at about $23,000. Redesigned SUVs also include the Jeep Wrangler, the descendant of the famed World War II military scout vehicle. It starts at about $27,500. Also redone is the Hyundai Santa Fe, which starts at about $30,000. Freshened models include the Jeep Cherokee, starting at about $24,000, the Buick Envision starting at about $34,000, and the Lincoln Navigator starting at about $72,000.   Also among luxury-car makers, Cadillac is scheduled to show a new compact SUV, the XT4, at Javits for the first time anywhere, with prices due later. Jaguar is adding its first compact SUVs, the gasoline-powered E-Pace starting at about $39,000 and the electric I-Pace, whose price isn't yet available. Lincoln will unveil its new Aviator three-row SUV at Javits — no price given yet. New passenger cars include the Volvo V60 station wagon going on sale early next year at about $38,000 to start. Another important new sedan is the redesigned Volkswagen Jetta, the brand's U.S. bestseller, starting at about $19,000. VW also will be showing its new flagship sedan, the Arteon, whose price isn't available yet. Also redesigned is Toyota's biggest sedan, the Avalon, which starts at about $34,000. And Audi will show its redesigned A6 luxury sedan, which starts around $50,000 A few of the offerings are just for fun. Ford, for example, is bringing back the Mustang Bullitt edition for another limited run, this time to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Steve McQueen detective film, which contains one of cinema's best-known car-chase sequences. Pricing  is expected to be in the mid-$40,000s. Porsche is expected to display the 500 hp. 911 GT3 RS shown at the Geneva auto show, priced at about $144,000. Somewhere between utility and sporty is the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, a rugged SUV that's just been redesigned; the price hasn't been disclosed yet. Fully self-driving cars still are believed to be years away from showrooms, with a host of safety issues yet to be worked out. A pedestrian was killed March 19 in Tempe, Arizona, by one of many experimental autonomous cars being tested on the nation's streets. The car was operated by the Uber ride-hailing service, and had an emergency backup driver behind the wheel. But technologies continue to proliferate in vehicles on sale now to assist drivers at staying centered in a lane, maintaining set speeds even when the traffic slows or accelerates, automatically steering around curves or changing lanes, stopping for obstacles and "seeing" other cars in blind spots. Cadillac's "Super Cruise" is available on the 2018 CT6, one item in a $5,000 options package, according to Cadillac. It allows hands-free driving on about 130,000 miles of pre-mapped U.S. and Canadian highways, automatically keeping the car in lane, following curves, accelerating and braking. It uses multiple cameras and sensors and at the same time ensures that the driver stays focused on the road even when not steering the car or even holding onto the steering wheel. The driver will, however, have to take over to change lanes or exit the highway. The pre-mapped limited-access highways include the Long Island Expressway, according to Cadillac's website. Competing systems are offered by Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla. Hyundai's new Santa Fe has two unusual safety systems, one that is designed to prevent children from either locking themselves in the car or being left inadvertently in the vehicle, and the other to prevent a door from being opened if a vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle is approaching from behind on that side of the SUV. The first system works by sensing movement in the rear seat of the vehicle after the driver has exited. If it does, it honks the horn, flashes the headlights and sends an alert to the driver's cellphone that a passenger has been left behind. Most of the new vehicles due at the show are gasoline-powered but carmakers, who are under pressure from federal regulations to improve vehicle fuel economy, continue to show new electric and hybrid gasoline-electric cars and SUVs. New "green" models at Javits this year include the 2019 Honda Insight, an early hybrid gas-electric model returning redesigned after a four-year absence. It goes on sale in summer at a price to be announced. The electric Jaguar I-Pace SUV has a 220-mile range between rechargings and 400 hp. available. The Nissan Leaf pure electric was redesigned and went on sale in January at about $30,000. Also new is the latest version of the Honda Accord hybrid, which starts at about $25,100. A potential cloud on the automotive horizon this year is rising interest rates, which experts think could particularly affect borrowers with weak credit. Local dealers, though, foresee little impact, at least this year. "I think rising interest rates are definitely going to be a factor and people are watching that, but I think there are more positives than negatives when we're talking about the economic landscape," said Brown of Atlantic.

Motor News: 2017 LA Auto Show

In a city full of stars… our attention was drawn to the cars at the 2017 Automobility L.A. Or, once you get past all the hoopla of press days, the 2017 LA Auto Show!

More Porsches are sold in California than any other state, so, fittingly, at the LA convention center they introduced a new 718 Boxster GTS, and the 718 Cayman GTS. Among the highlights, horsepower rises to 365.

LA was also the first auto show for the 370-hp Porsche 911 Carrera T. The 'T' is for "Touring", the lightest car in the 911 Carrera lineup.

Porsche also showed the wagonish 680-hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo. 

And, the 3rd generation Porsche Cayenne SUV.   

Chevrolet wowed the top-down performance crowd with the 755 horsepower Corvette ZR1 Convertible.

BMW’s electric performance took center stage with the world premiere of the 369-hp i8 Roadster.

Mercedes-Benz showed up with an all-new CLS four-door coupe posing for its world debut. 

And the wraps came off a sleeker 2018 Mazda 6. 

Land Rover took luxury even further revealing the Range Rover SVAutobiography. 

INFINITI arrived with the 2019 QX50, the first production variable compression ratio engine.

And the new Lexus RX350L adds a most sought after third row. 

At Lincoln, the MKX gets a makeover including a new name: Nautilus.

Volvo arrived with the downsized but very upscale XC40 utility. 

The biggest SUV making its debut was the 8-passenger Subaru Ascent.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler adds even more off-road capabilities.

Toyota is also thinking about outdoor fun in a small ute with the Future Toyota Adventure Concept. 

A sporty name, but this time as a compact crossover, introducing the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. 

The subcompact-ute segment will also grow with the Nissan Kicks…and Hyundai KONA coming to the U.S.
