Lexus J201: The Off-Roader’s Fantasy
Tumblr media
Lexus LX
At first glance, the Lexus LX570 impresses with its large proportions and showy looks. But what might not be immediately obvious to the passerby, is that hidden underneath all the luxury and glamour, is a highly capable off-road vehicle the likes of Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco and Mercedes G-Class.
Tumblr media
2021 Lexus LX570
Lexus has been known for its off-road capable vehicles for decades now. The two key models include the LX and GX, both of which exist thanks to the Toyota Land Cruiser, which they are based on. With versatile performance on any terrain, the LX570 boasts excellent body stability on uneven surfaces, responsive steering, adaptive air suspension, crawl control, real-time four-wheel-drive with active traction control and 7000-lb towing capacity. It is a tough brick that likes to get its shoes dirty.
For those who desire to get more out of their LX, either new or old, there is a plethora of aftermarket parts and upgrades available that further enhance its off-road capabilities. Everything from lift kits, to body kits, light bars, snorkels, tires, wheels, brakes, suspension… and the list goes on. Upgrading your car with aftermarket performance parts is a great way to improve its functionality and to personalize it. With the vast amount of parts available for the LX570, there is everything one needs to make it their dream off-roader.
J201 Concept
The J201 Concept is an LX570 that has been fine-tuned with aftermarket performance parts. Its inspiration comes from the large community of Lexus SUV owners who love to venture off-road and explore the great outdoors. Lexus calls this group of people “Experimental Adventurers,” and has built the J201 Concept with them in mind. The name “J201” comes from the internal model code for the LX. J201 is the chassis code, which is well known among off-roading enthusiasts.
Exterior Upgrades
Front and rear off-road bumpers that add under-body reinforcement and improve ground clearance
Front bumper winch and light bar
Rear bumper lights
Trunk-mounted spare tire, ladder and water cans

Downsized wheels (from 20” to 17”) that make room for off-road tires with large sidewall and deep grooves
Drilled front and rear brake rotors with performance pads
Upgraded suspension control arms and spacers
Adjusted height sensors that allow for higher air suspension lift
Under-body protection in the form of rock sliders and skid plates.

J201 Drilled Brake Rotors
Engine/Drivetrain Upgrades
Supercharger that boosts power output to 550 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque (compared to the original 383 hp and 403 lb-ft of torque)
Performance differentials
Air snorkel
Air compressor for tire inflation
Interior Upgrades
Accessory interface for controlling lighting, differential, compressor, battery and angle meter
Aluminum storage cases
Drawers with dog bowls, tools and first aid kit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The J201 “Concept” isn’t a concept in the traditional sense, with one-off parts and a non production spec design. Rather, this is a standard LX570 with real world aftermarket parts from real brands, built to showcase the versatile capabilities of the LX platform. While the J201 Concept likely won’t make it to production, you can build one just like it using all the same parts. And if a new LX570 is pricey, older models of the LX, GX and Land Cruiser can be picked up for cheap. Even without all the fancy tech of a new LX570, they are nevertheless great platforms for driving off the beaten path and enjoying some outdoors.
The J201 is currently competing in the all-female Rebelle Rally, a week long event where participants are tasked with navigating across more than 1,200 miles of treacherous Nevada and California desert without a GPS or cell phone, moving from checkpoint to checkpoint using physical maps and a compass. With two expert drivers/navigators behind the wheel, I have no doubt the J201 will perform spectacularly.

2021 Lincoln Navigator is American exceptionalism made manifest
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2021-lincoln-navigator-is-american-exceptionalism-made-manifest-2/
2021 Lincoln Navigator is American exceptionalism made manifest
Big boi.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Why do American automakers flounder when tasked with creating a luxury vehicle that has to compete with the Germans? It always seems like Uncle Sam has a hard time meeting muster when compared to anything beyond his own shores. But no more. The latest Lincoln Navigator dramatically ramps up the effort, bringing a level of fancy-pants-iness that is truly world class.
Like
Plush interior appointments
Interesting color schemes
Quiet, comfortable cruising
Don’t Like
Truckish ride quality sometimes
Thirsty
Loud massagers and other trifles
All of Lincoln’s latest SUVs have really ramped up the effort, but nowhere is that more apparent than on the flagship Navigator in its top Black Label configuration. The Navigator on my driveway carries the new-for-2021 Special Edition package, a $6,695 upgrade that adds more exterior flavor through a black-and-white motif that includes a black roof, a black roof rack, black wheels and a monochromatic grille alongside Pristine White paint. It’s a good look, but man, that’s a big chunk of change for some mild add-ons. No matter the package, though, the Navigator strikes an imposing shadow — and not just because it’s the size of a Chicago brownstone.
The 2021 Navigator Black Label’s interior is amazing. It’s the best-appointed American luxury car I’ve had the pleasure to drive, and it’s every bit as posh as what you’ll find at a Mercedes dealership. This one carries the Black Label “Destination” theme, which is meant to represent French elegance, I think, somehow. But I don’t need a marketing degree to appreciate this stunning full-red leather interior, which plays well with the dashes of similarly colored trim on the dashboard, doors and center console. While the Cadillac Escalade puts in little effort to hide its parts-bin engineering (you can find the steering wheel buttons on, like, half the cars GM makes), every piece of the Navigator feels special, from the metal rocker switches on the steering wheel to the knurled volume knob on the center console. Nearly every surface is either padded or leather-lined.
Usability abounds in the 2021 Navigator. The large center console floats above a sizable stash tray, with two tiers of pockets on each door and a decently large cubby under the center armrest. While you can option a center console to rest between the second-row captain’s chairs, my tester lacks this, making third-row ingress and egress insanely easy. Hanging out back there isn’t a big ask, either, thanks to some spacious proportions; there’s an extra inch of legroom than what you’d find in a similarly equipped Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and my 6-foot frame should be comfy back here for hours. The standard-wheelbase Navigator offers about 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is OK, but flipping a couple switches to fold those seats down offers up closer to 60 cubes, expanding to 103 when you minimize the captain’s chairs, too.
Honestly, the 2021 Navigator’s interior is so well thought out that its only apparent flaws are dumb little things that most people probably won’t care about. The infotainment screen bezel is cartoonishly large. The cup holders are surprisingly tiny. The seat massagers are louder than the competition’s. The blinker stalk’s movement is too soft, leading me to miss the three-blink detent. Silly minutiae like that.
One carryover that Lincoln should be proud of is the engine under the hood. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6  is the same that you’ll find in the Ford Expedition and F-150, and it’s a peach. Producing 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, the Navigator is never left wanting for forward motion, as the six-pot provides a wave of readily available torque that makes the whole shebang feel surprisingly sprightly. The 10-speed automatic transmission moves through the gears smoothly. In a majority of operating conditions, the 2021 Navigator’s ride is properly smooth, with the only real ride-quality issue coming into play over sharp bumps, where you get some body jiggles, which are only exacerbated on my tester thanks to its 22-inch wheels.
Sure, you could drive it like a monster, but the Navi is best when treated like there are three VIPs in the back. Roll softly onto the gas and make liberal use of the well-tuned brake pedal, and you’ll be rewarded with smooth operation. Its body-on-frame underpinnings also bestow it with some solid capability; check the box for the heavy-duty towing package and you can drag 8,700 pounds from here to Timbuktu.
Luxury is costly, and that includes at the gas pump, too. The 2021 Navigator Black Label is EPA-estimated at 16 miles per gallon city and 20 mpg highway, numbers that I was able to meet but not beat over a couple hundred miles of driving. There’s an Eco-specific mode available to numb inputs and make it easier to be efficient, and it does help a bit. There’s also a Sport mode, which must be some kind of joke I’m not smart enough to get, because under no circumstances should anyone attempt to drive this dwarf planet in any remotely aggressive manner.
Lincoln could’ve leaned much heavier on the Ford parts bin, but in not doing so, the Navigator feels just that much more special.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
The Navigator’s complement of in-car technology starts dead center on the dashboard with a 10-inch touchscreen display running the latest version of Ford’s Sync software. The on-screen icons are easy to read at a glance, and Ford’s telematics getup is easy to get used to, but you can always rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto if you prefer a smartphone-style experience. In addition to the central screen, there’s also a 12-inch gauge display, which sports a minimal layout that I really enjoy, displaying only the most pertinent information. A head-up display reduces distraction even further. When it comes time to charge, there are USB ports in every row, with the foremost occupants treated to both USB-A and USB-C outlets. The Navigator lacks the whiz-bang, dashboard-wide screen experience of the Cadillac Escalade, but it’s still a good setup.
The truck-adjacent side of the automotive industry is no longer bereft of the same safety systems that are found on passenger cars. The 2021 Navigator comes standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 suite of active and passive safety systems, which includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability is a $695 premium on lower trims, but it becomes standard as you move up the ranks. Of course, the Escalade can one-up the Navigator here with its Super Cruise driver-assist technology.
Hopefully the screen’s bezel is hilariously large because Lincoln intends on upgrading the display size later on.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Expectedly, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is not a budget-friendly conveyance. Its starting price of $77,840 (including $1,295 for destination) only rockets northward when options are taken into account. This Black Label model is about as equipped as it can get, and its $106,115 price tag is quite the pill to swallow, until you realize that the similarly powered Mercedes-Benz GLS580 pretty much starts at the six-figure mark.
If pure luxury (and some capability) is what you’re after, the Navigator stands atop the pile of large luxury SUVs. In terms of outright comfort, the Mercedes GLS-Class is probably its closest competitor with its super ride quality. Those looking for the latest driver tech will want to check out the Cadillac Escalade with Super Cruise. Other body-on-frame competitors include the Infiniti QX80 and Lexus LX 570, both of which are rather old underneath their revised exteriors. There’s also the Range Rover, in case you want to ditch the third row and add the ability to drive through nearly 3 feet of standing water. Hey, you never know.
Cast against competitors or not, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is an exceptional SUV. Its Black Label trim brings an impressive level of luxury to the table, while its underpinnings give it a great deal of capability,  whether that covers interior space or towing. It’s a shining city on a hill, a rolling testament to prosperity and power that makes you feel important the second you slide behind the wheel.

2021 Lexus LX 570: Inspiration Series Returns, Sport Pack Updated
After a year’s hiatus, the Lexus LX 570 welcomes the special Inspiration Series trim back to the model line for 2021. Limited to 500 units, the three-row Inspiration Series sports a bevy of blacked-out exterior bits. This includes its 21-inch wheels, grille, exterior accent pieces, and badges. Furthermore, the trim adds black finishes to the fog lights, headlights, and taillights, the latter two of which also include smoked lenses. While black exterior paint comes standard, a coat of white paint is optionally available.
Inside, the LX 570 Inspiration Series features black leather seats with tasteful red accents. Special floor and cargo mats, as well as black headliner, round out the model. Although tasteful, the blacked-out 2021 LX 570 Inspiration Series seems, well, uninspired.
In fact, we’re more interested in the updates made to the SUV’s optional Sport package. Introduced last year, the Sport package is thoroughly revised for 2021 and it trades the 2020 model’s questionable grille pattern for a look more consistent with that of other vehicles in the luxury brand’s model line.
Admittedly, those who despise the Lexus spindle grille will still find the Sport pack’s updated mug rather repugnant. Reworked lower fascias and a new 21-inch wheel design bring even more cohesion to the package’s styling for the new model year.
The option package does nothing to improve power from the SUV’s 5.7-liter V-8 engine. While the big bent-eight moves the LX quickly enough for day-to-day driving, its 383 horsepower fails to turn this heavy off-road-oriented SUV into any sort of “sporting” machine (we recorded a sprint to 60 mph of 7.3 seconds from an LX 570 in 2016).  Pricing for the 2021 Lexus LX 570 starts at $87,605 for the base two-row model—$170 less than last year. Hoping to nab an LX 570 Inspiration Series? Then plan on dropping $100,335.

2021 Lexus LX 570 Redesign, Review, Specs, and Pictures. It may be old, but still has a lot to offer. SUVs are usually associated with off-road performance, but things, in reality, are completely different. Most of them have to offer nothing more than rugged look. On the other side, the LX belongs to the very exclusive company of off-roaders. It is also luxurious. However, that doesn’t change the…

2021 Lexus LX 570 Configuration, Color Concept, Release Date – It is no top secret that TNGA, as well as technicians, are a little bit slow-moving when considering the SUV collection. One Week With the 2020 Lincoln Navigator: Still Impressing Us
I remember like it was yesterday, when I climbed inside the then-newly launched Lincoln Navigator at the 2017 New York Auto Show. It was one of the best in show with its modern and elegant exterior and a plush cabin with a new design language that we had only seen in the concept the year before. More than anything, the Navigator marked a new era in American luxury. Instead of copying what the European and Asian car brands were doing, Lincoln came up with its own formula.
The Navigator has been around for the past three years, but it seems like it hasn’t aged a bit. In fact, the small updates Lincoln adopted have helped improve its flagship SUV. It keeps impressing us with its astonishing cabin, technology and safety updates, and a new monochromatic package. There’s no doubt the Navigator continues to rule with authority.
2020 Lincoln Navigator: What Has Changed?
Lincoln added more standard features to the 2020 Navigator to make it more compelling. The base model now has the adaptive suspension and power running boards as standard equipment. The adaptive suspension is a big win for 2020, as it improves the ride significantly. On the technology side, Phone as a Key is now standard on Navigator, allowing the driver to literally use a personal smartphone as a key—locking, unlocking and starting the engine all from the phone.
2020 Lincoln Navigator: American Luxury
Open the doors, and a sea of black leather and wood will welcome you into the cabin. Everywhere you look and everywhere you touch, there’s a premium feel to the interior. From the floating screen to the full digital display in the instrument cluster, the 2020 Navigator delivers a first-class experience. Although I’m not a huge fan of combinations like black leather with brown wood, this interior is the exception. The chrome accents add to the clean look of the center console, and the blacked-out instrument panel adds to the affluent ambiance.
Our Reserve model sits between the base trim and the Black Label, but with the 30-way Perfect Position seats and the Revel premium audio system with 20 speakers, it ups the wow factor. These two features are part of the Luxury package, which adds $2,500 to the price, but every penny is worth it. The seats are extremely comfortable, and the audio system will have you singing your favorite songs without feeling embarrassed.
Compared to other models in its class, the Navigator really stands out. Although the 2021 Cadillac Escalade looks like it will give the Navigator a battle, the Lincoln is far superior to the Infiniti QX80 and the Lexus LX 570. Newer models like the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS give the Lincoln a good fight, but the Navigator stands out with its greater value and outstanding proportions.
2020 Lincoln Navigator: Ride and Handling
Handling is not a big priority for full-size SUVs, but the Navigator delivers. Powered by a 3.5-liter twin turbo V-6 that produces 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, this big Lincoln feels healthy all the way around. Its 10-speed automatic is quick to downshift, and the upshifts are done smoothly. Press down the throttle and the engine will get the Navigator up to speed effortlessly. Despite its large size, the Lincoln feels confident and doesn’t disappoint when pressed hard.
Although we didn’t get to try it this time, our Navigator came equipped with four-wheel drive, allowing this beast to cruise through dirty trails. A drive mode selector makes it easy to choose the correct mode depending on the conditions you’re driving in. The modes include Slippery, Excite, Conserve, Deep Conditions, Snow, and Normal. Each mode is programmed to change the throttle mapping, transmission behavior, and the suspension and stability control responses. Our week in the Navigator had no rain, but we were able to test its performance off-road during our 2019 SUV of the Year program.
Our model was equipped with the 22-inch monochromatic wheels, which look excellent in the black trim. But there’s bad news: The ride becomes a bit busier with them. The broken pavement causes harsh impacts in the cabin when traversing poor quality LA freeways. Still, the adaptive suspension does a reasonable job isolating the cabin from the impacts the low-profile tires are sending it. On tight turns, the 2020 Navigator’s big body doesn’t feel as large; its chassis leans in nicely without disturbing the ride.
Although its steering is light, it still delivers a nice feedback of what’s happening on the road. You don’t feel like you’re driving a big body-on-frame SUV, and its relatively small turning circle will allow you to make most U-turns without backing up.
2020 Lincoln Navigator: Safety
With Lincoln Co-Pilot360, every Navigator comes standard with key safety technologies like adaptive cruise control with stop and go traffic, rear view camera, etc. But for 2020, Lincoln is adding auto high beams, blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and a rear view camera washer to Co-Pilot360.
2020 Lincoln Navigator: Should I Buy It?
The Navigator keeps impressing us. Although it’s been around for three years, its style, driving manners, and value within its segment get our attention. As a family luxury SUV, the Navigator brings a ton of standard features that make it attractive. And with its mid-century modern cabin, premium leather, and spacious cabin, it’s an enticing offering.
