“All year, I was critiqued about who I was. I don’t fit the narrative. I’m too hood, I’m too ghetto. This is for the girls that looked like me. It was bigger than me tonight. I’m happy. I felt I helped grow women’s basketball.”

What a tournament! Wrestling has consistently been the most entertaining Olympic combat sport and it was really on display in this year. Some really crazy matches in the freestyle portions. Big dramatics.
Tumblr media
Japan has really built up that wrestling program. The women came through and did their thing like they always do. Won 4 of the 6 gold medals available in women's freestyle. Despite having their best wrestler get upset in the first round of 50 kg (Yui Susaki). And then they got two bronze medals in the divisions they did not win. Crazy levels of dominance continue for them. But they also won 4 gold medals in the men's divisions, which is a huge shift for them. They had Kenichiro Fumita and Nao Kusaka win gold in Greco-Roman. Then in men's freestyle, they had Kotaro Kiyooka and Rei Higuchi winning gold as well with Daichi Takatani earning silver but beating Team USA cornerstone Kyle Dake in the process. 9 finalists in 18 weight classes. Just crazy.
As for Team USA, it was really a tale of two halves. The women showed up and showed out. Two gold medals for USA women's team with veteran Sarah Hildebrandt avenging her bronze exit in 2020 to win gold here. Another legend of USA wrestling in Helen Maroulis takes home her third Olympic medal, taking a bronze. Plus the coronation of one of the most dominant women in the sport, 20 year old Amit Elor. We also had 20 year old Kennedy Blades make her final to take home silver. The future for the women's wrestling team is extremely bright. I'm just saying, now is the time to enroll your daughter/niece in wrestling.
For the American men though, heartbreak. For the first time since 1968, the men's team did not take home gold. Spencer Lee came up closest, making the final but leaving with a silver medal. Kyle Dake was upset in the semifinals and was forced to settle for another bronze. 4x NCAA champion Aaron Brooks made a great account of himself. Took home bronze after losing his semifinal bout with literally 5 seconds left on the clock. Kyle Snyder and Zain Rutherford came up short in hunts for bronze. Just a really tough year. Team USA will need to regroup heading into the 2028 Olympics in LA.
There were other really big stories too. The biggest, Mijain Lopez getting his record breaking 5x Olympic gold medal for Cuba and cementing himself as the unquestionable GOAT. Just an insane reign of dominance from the Cuban heavyweight. Then leaving his shoes on the mat to signify retire. Just a perfect way to ride off into the sunset. Geno Petriashvili of Georgia, finally getting that Olympic gold on the third shot. For those that don't remember, he came up short in 2020 losing to Gable Steveson at the very last second. Relative unknown Akhmed Tazhudinov continuing to breakout after showing up and dominating in 2023, this time for Bahrain as Russia is banned from Olympic competition. Hassan Yazdani wrestling with the injury heading into the final at 86 kg. Jersey boy Sebastian Rivera getting a bronze medal for Puerto Rico! Taha Akgül retiring after another bronze medal.
Just an amazing tournament overall.
For anyone who may have tuned into amateur wrestling for the first time this year for the Olympics and find themselves becoming a fan, you can follow some of your favs later this year because the non-Olympic world championships are being held in October!
October 28-31, many of the men and women you saw wrestling for a gold medal will be fighting for the right to call themselves a world champion.
Tumblr media
Would tell you about amateur boxing but that is a huge mess right now.

EUGENE, Ore. – Presented with the opportunity to carry on a proud hammer tradition for California track & field at Hayward Field, it took Rowan Hamilton just three throws to find himself in a position that no Golden Bear has in over a century.   The last Cal athlete to win a title in the men's hammer was Jack Merchant in 1922. Now, that distinction belongs to Hamilton, whose personal-best throw of 77.18m (253-2) surpassed 2023 champion Kenneth Ikeji of Harvard's top mark by just two inches; he also became the program's first NCAA men's champion in any event since 2011 (Mike Morrison, decathlon).   "Those are things that people take for granted, but that's hard to do, to keep stepping up when somebody else steps up," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson.   Hamilton, who hails from Chilliwack, B.C., is also the first Canadian man to win the event since Scott Neilson in 1979. He was the favorite to win after leading the NCAA standings for nearly the entire season and climbing to No. 8 in the all-time men's collegiate hammer standings.   "Rowan was really stable today," assistant coach Mohamad Saatara said. "That's what we were trying to do – we were expecting these other guys to really get going, so for him to succeed, he had to be very stable and just execute. I think there are some really big throws in his future."
"I think it's really special, just being able to carry on the legacy at Cal that was set by (women's hammer alum) Camryn Rogers, (who won) three consecutive national championships," Hamilton said. "I'm happy that I can come here, compete with Mo, the Cal Bears, and represent the school very well."   Teammate Ivar Moisander joined Hamilton in the men's hammer as the other half of Cal's first-ever duo in the event. Moisander's mark of 68.13m (223-6), while not enough to earn him another three attempts, still earned him a second-career Second-Team All-America nod and his highest career placement (13th) at the NCAA Championships.   The 4x100m relay squad of Chase Williams, George Monroe, Mason Mangum and David Foster followed up Hamilton's school record with one of their own, racing to a time of 38.90 in the semifinal to demolish the program's previous best of 39.11 that had stood since 1975 – old enough that the time itself had been adjusted from a 4x110y result. It was good enough for 12th place overall, earning Williams, Monroe and Mangum their first career Second-Team All-America honors and Foster his second. Foster then competed in the 100m semifinal just over an hour later, finishing third in his heat and 14th overall with a time of 10.28 to become a Second-Team All-American for the third time this season.   In the pole vault, Skyler Magula passed on the first two heights before clearing his first attempt at 5.37m (17-7.25), eventually matching his season best of 5.52m (18-1.25) to tie for sixth with Penn's James Rhoads and earn First-Team All-America status. It was the best overall finish by any Cal men's pole vaulter since Robert "Bubba" McLean in 2001, who was also the last to make the First Team (2002).
Jeff Duensing, who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Pac-12 Championships, closed out the night – and the Cal Athletics season – in the shot put, posting a mark of 18.99m (62-3.75) on his third attempt to finish in 13th place and notch a spot on the All-America Second Team; he became the first Cal men's shot putter to repeat as an All-American since Peter Simon in 2017-18.   In total, Cal's men collected nine All-America honors, tying a program record from 1982.   "I am so, so proud of this group," Johnson said. "They worked hard all year and they did what they needed to do at the right time."

Reduxx is focusing on his biological sex, which considering that water pollution is a very physical sport is a valid concern. But the dude is 31. This dude is over 10 years older than most of his teammates and competitors. Amd how many years of of not only athletic activity withnunaltered testosterone.

A trans-identified male is set to compete in a national women’s water polo championship this weekend, shortly after becoming a women’s chess champion in Michigan. Alicia, formerly Johnny, Paans, is a star member of the University of Michigan’s Women’s Water Polo club team.
Paans, 31, is expected to appear at the 2024 National Collegiate Water Polo Championships (CWPA), which will be held from May 3 to 5 at Texas A&M University. The competition includes 16 US-based teams vying for the women’s national title in their sport. Paans’ first game will be against Texas State University on May 3 at 9:00 GMT.
Paans is expected to compete on the University of Michigan’s Women’s Club Water Polo team. The club’s official Instagram account recently named Paans as “player of the week,” boasting that he is also a state chess champion in the women’s category, having won second place at the Michigan Chess Association women’s open in 2022.
Tumblr media
Paans also competed on the University of Michigan team in 2023, during which time they won the national women’s title against the University of California-Santa Barbara. In the same competition, Paans was noted to have scored goals in a 17 to 5 defeat against the University of Virginia, and in a 17 to 6 defeat against the University of Washington.
Outside of the sporting world, Paans has a history of involving himself in women’s issues, including volunteering as a counselor at a “hotline specialized in topics relating to female health and pregnancy.”
While it is unclear when Paans began to identify as a “woman,” a 2013 Facebook post reveals that friends still referred to him by his birth name while congratulating him for beginning his secondary education in his home nation of the Netherlands. Paans appears to have immigrated from Europe to California in 2017 when he began an internship for Volo San Diego — a social sports club — and has remained in the country for education ever since. In 2023, he began a social work degree at the University of Michigan.
According to the Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS), the parents of Paans’ opponents have confirmed that he uses the female locker rooms and facilities when he competes.
Speaking to Reduxx, Jennifer, the mother of a female NCAA water polo athlete who participated in the 2023 national championship with Paans, explained it had been “obvious” that Paans was male from the moment she had seen him. Jennifer’s full name is being withheld for the protection of her daughter.
“My husband and I saw him first, standing aside the pool before [University of Michigan’s] first game. We looked at each other in surprise, and immediately knew it was a man,” she says, adding: “I observed Alicia quite a bit over the tournament, partly out of concern for the women, and also wondering how his teammates acted around him.”
Jennifer says she had been distressed by the thought that her daughter might have been forced to participate against a male, and was “relieved” when the match-up did not come to fruition.
“None of these women were initially aware a man had been allowed to play,” Jennifer noted. “Many of the player’s on my daughter’s team were almost in shock at the situation, and spoke to one another about discomfort with it. But to my knowledge, no one spoke to the organizers of the tournament. They felt that nothing would be done given that it was allowed based on [CWPA] policy.”
In January of 2024, the CWPA released a transgender athlete policy which explicitly allowed males to compete in women’s categories. The policy reads: “Transgender athletes who identify as female are eligible to compete in both the Co-ed League and the Women’s League.”
Trans identified males are also required to provide a “letter of confirmation” regarding their gender identity, either from the athlete or, if underage, a parent or guardian; proof of testosterone levels below 10 nmol/L within 60 days of competition; and a physician’s note to prove that the athlete is starting “physical gender transitioning/testosterone suppression.” The association purports to ensure “fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all.”
The policy has been slammed by ICONS as a “pathway for men” to enter women’s water polo.
Tumblr media
In an official statement, ICONS condemned the CWPA, highlighting the safety risks associated with allowing males to self-identify into contact sports.
“The Collegiate Water Polo Association has made it clear in their policy that they do not prioritize safe or fair competition for women in water polo,” said ICONS co-founder Marshi Smith. “Their discriminatory policy announcement came after they had crowned the University of Michigan team with a national title, despite utilizing a male player – a secret weapon not accessible to other women’s teams in the tournament.”
Smith continues that despite water polo being a high-contact sport, female athletes were thrown into the water with no disclosure of the added risks of competing against a male.
“This year’s national championships are shaping up to be a tragic deja vu of domination for the female opponents who simply seek a fair chance to succeed.”
Tumblr media
Most U-M students fall into the 18-19 age-range. Student age diversity is considered average
How physical is water polo?
A: Very. As said before, water polo is a full-contact sport. This means that players are nearly always in contact with one another. In order to defend an offensive player, the defender keeps at least one hand on their player at all times. Players jostle each other the water in order to get control of the ball. Pushes and kicks, while not strictly legal in all situations, are common.
However, the physicality of the game is controlled by the referees. Kicking off of other players as well as holding or pushing them under water is against the rules.

Three Can Keep a Secret if Two Are Dead
Gymnastics fandoms reaction to leaks from big named athletes is totally crazy to me.  “Who is this tweeting an announcement that, if true, is Suni's to reveal. If the tweeter knows Suni plans to announce this on Tuesday, they should keep their mouth shut.”
So there are rumors that Sunisa Lee told the Auburn team that this would be her last NCAA season.  I’d believe it just based on the fact that she herself said she wasn’t interested in finishing her degree, that she was only taking classes to maintain her eligibility and my general impression that Auburn hasn’t been a fun place for her.
But coming on the heals of people saying Gymcastic shouldn’t have followed up on gossip going around US Nationals about Gabby Douglas training again I really need have to shake my head.
Sunisa Lee (and Gabby Douglas for that matter) are public figures with agents and advisers.  If Lee did announce this to the Auburn gymnastics team that is a very sizable group of people inevitably not all of whom like her.  Her agents and her had to know that as soon as you tell a group of people that size it would get out.
‘It was her time to announce’ is for pregnancies and illnesses.  But something like this is news.  Not only that ... but the timing itself is kind of shitty for the people who signed NLI’s last week for Auburn as those are binding contracts and a certain number of them almost certainly thought they were going to a team with the Olympic champion on it.
“If true, it’s shitty that someone is trying to spoil her announcing her comeback just because she decided to give her team the heads up first.”  This assumes that the people being told don’t have their own feelings about how this impacts them.  Some gym fans seem to buy a disturbing amount of propaganda out of NCAA gymnastics about teams being the closest group of sisters.  And people persist in this even after Sunisa Lee herself gave a small podcast interview that directly contradicted the curated narrative about her NCAA experience.
I have ... opinions about the Graba twins and few of them are good.  I’d really love to know how much Suni was part of Jeff’s recruitment for incoming 2023 and 2024 gymnasts who will never compete with Suni if this is true.  Leaving aside the clearly sketchy Midwest Gymnastics to Auburn pipeline and the entire conflict of interest there, and even this absolutely horrible piece about Midwest, there were rumors floating around last year that Jeff Graba was telling other Auburn gymnasts that they were ungrateful to him for getting Suni there.  That many of them were also unhappy with the circus around Suni.  And that’s not even touching the racial issues that have floated around Graba and the Auburn program in the past.
If Sunisa Lee told the people in that room this news this weekend some number of them were likely angry, some number of them were likely happy, and some number of them felt no obligation to Sunisa Lee in the slightest.  And her agent would have told her that.
But in general this kind of hand wringing about (basically) professional athletes who are adults is yet another manifestation of a parasocial relationship people feel towards these young women.  “She must be protected” is a great impulse when you are concerned about minor children and the policies and coaching practices of authority figures who have power over them.  “She must be protected” when it comes to a public figure setting their own narrative opens yourself up to manipulation.

Dawn Staley leads South Carolina to title
Tumblr media
(News4usonline) - Greatness speaks for itself. For head coach Dawn Staley and her South Carolina women's basketball team, the word great will always be tagged along with what they achieved during the 2023-2024 season. And they did it their way. "I'm super excited to share this moment with our team," Staley said after South Carolina beat Iowa in the national championship game. "They are incredible human beings and young people who trusted, believed and figured out a way to help each other, learn and grow, and ultimately become champions." Most Outstanding Player, @Kamillascsilva! @GamecockWBB#WFinalFour x #NationalChampionship pic.twitter.com/YWImUlkGyu— NCAA Women's Final Four (@WFinalFour) April 7, 2024 The Gamecocks believed in what Staley was telling them all season. The journey for Staley and South Carolina took place months ago with sweat and wrapped up with a celebration. To do what Staley and South Carolina did is remarkable. When people discuss lifting women's basketball to another level, LSU and Angel Reece did it last season. Without question, Staley and South Carolina winning the national title and staying undefeated for the entire season is another example of this type of greatness. You don't go out and win 38 games straight (38-0) without greatness being attached to your name. You can go ahead and put that label right next door to Staley and South Carolina's legacy. "It means a lot to do it with this group of girls," South Carolina guard Raven Johnson said. "If you guys would have seen us, just the stuff we went through in the summer and the hard work we put in, we deserve this honestly. Coach, she gives us so much leeway. She let us be loose. She just let us be who we are. It's just so much stuff that we go through." In last year's Final Four, it was Iowa that was doing all the smiling and celebrating after beating the Gamecocks. A year later, Staley and South Carolina are now the ones smiling after beating Iowa, 87-75, to win the national title. Johnson talked about what it's been like playing for Staley. "The GOAT, you mean the Dawn Staley? It means a lot just to play -- just to learn from her," Johnson remarked. "She's like a mom. I mean, I don't know, I go to her about everything. I could joke around with her. I could do anything, just anything." "She's like a mom, like a home away from home. It's a home-away-from-home feeling." There's no better way to have a coach like her and be so comfortable around her. And I take pride in what she do for us, on and off the court, not just basketball," Johnson added. Te-Hina Paopao echoed her teammates' thoughts about Staley. Dawn is a whole mood! @GamecockWBB #WFinalFour x #NationalChampionship pic.twitter.com/dXWSfFGuAY— NCAA Women's Final Four (@WFinalFour) April 7, 2024 "Man, she's so important to have in people's lives. She's amazing," Paopao said. "God has put her in my life, and she's impacted it so much, not only me, but my family. She changes lives for the better. I wish you guys could experience that and just how much she's helped me as a player and as a woman." The accolades can't come enough for Staley. South Carolina. The Gamecocks are the 10th women's basketball team to go unbeaten in a season. This is the third national title the Gamecocks have won under the watchful eye of Staley. This championship, however, carried a little bit more weight to Staley than the other two, she said. "Well, it was emotional for me because of how it ended last year. I'll leave that there," Staley quipped. "And I was emotional at the beginning of the game because I didn't want what happened last year to happen this year. So I was handling things in real time, not afterwards." "I'm going to move to handling things in real time and not having to wait until there's an ending that shouldn't be. I was like that throughout the entire season, but for this one I wasn't going to allow what I felt happened to us last year to happen this year. So I had a little bit of PTSD, and I addressed it in real time. I mean, it's heavy, it's heavy. You carry the burden of every single one of your players, all the coaches and staff members that put so much into our team. And it's a heavy load to be undefeated, to finish the job," Staley added. Staley and the Gamecocks started off dominating the SEC Conference and concluded with an unblemished mark, going 16-0. 2024 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS ? @GamecockWBB #WFinalFour x #NationalChampionship pic.twitter.com/Ns40zsUaua— NCAA Women's Final Four (@WFinalFour) April 7, 2024 South Carolina went undefeated in conference games while they battled and played against formidable opponents like Angel Reece and LSU. Staley and the Gamecocks rolled through one opponent after another throughout the season. Then came the NCAA Women's Tournament. It proved no different. Staley and South Carolina pushed right on through, advancing to the Final Four. South Carolina took care of business against North Carolina State before reaching the title against Iowa. Another challenge. Another obstacle standing in the way of greatness. Individual achievement is wonderful, but winning a championship is what you're measured by in team sports. South Carolina has a group of talented individuals who came together collectively as a team to make all of their dreams come true, and that is to win a national championship. Staley views herself as a caretaker. She is going to make sure things are done right. The success she and South Carolina have achieved on and off the court can be attributed to doing things decently and in order. "Well, it means that we have quietly done things, in my opinion, the right way," Staley said. "We find the right pieces to help us. We really do things the right way. We're very disciplined in how we approach basketball." She continued, "I am one that, I'm forever indebted to basketball, so I'm always going to take care of it. I'm always going to make sure that our players are respectful. I'm always going to make sure that they know the history of our game. I want to make sure they are always respectful to our opponents." South Carolina: 2023-24 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Champions
Tumblr media
With undefeated South Carolina jolted onto an unfamiliar backfoot, coach Dawn Staley looked toward her bench to remedy an early 11-point deficit to Iowa — more specifically, she looked toward Tessa Johnson.
The freshman guard outshone her six-point scoring average all tournament long and was a revelation in relief for the Gamecocks. With a team-high 19 points and three triples, Johnson led South Carolina to a slim halftime lead and a dominant third quarter, helping the Gamecocks claim their second national title in three years, 87-75, and cap off a perfect season.
The role players were rolling from the opening tip, as Kate Martin and Sydney Affolter gave Iowa a quick 7-0 lead, but Caitlin Clark scored 13 in a row from all over the court. The newly crowned AP Player of the Year drained a pair of 3s, was fouled on two more attempts and converted at the rim to give her Hawkeyes a 20-9 lead by the first media timeout. Clark finished with 30 points (10 of 28 shooting), eight rebounds and five assists in her last college game.
Iowa's centers Hannah Stuelke and Addison O'Grady admirably limited star Gamecock post Cardoso to just 2 of 6 shooting in the first quarter, but the Brazilian behemoth partnered with Johnson and inevitably found her opening. Johnson — who led the Gamecocks' 36-0 bench scoring advantage — took up the mantle for South Carolina and its top-ranked defense. The freshman guard poked away a pair of steals, turning each into transition baskets, before Cardoso finished through contact to tie the game at 27.
That top-ranked defense also took exception to Clark's early mastery, and a savvy defensive play from Raven Johnson dispossessed Clark and gave the Gamecocks an easy two points before halftime.
South Carolina bottled up this late-half momentum for a roaring start out of the locker room. Chloe Kitts ensured her spot on the floor with two straight baskets out of the intermission, and Te-Hina Paopao nailed a pull-up jumper to give her Gamecocks a 55-46 lead and force Iowa coach Lisa Bluder to burn a quick timeout.
Cardoso also hauled a career-high 17 rebounds, leading an overwhelming South Carolina rebounding effort that started to wear on the Hawkeyes. The Gamecocks enjoyed a 24-11 rebounding advantage in the second half, including six offensive boards, and a plus-6 advantage in second chance points helped South Carolina maintain its lead.
Paopao nailed a 3 to begin the fourth quarter, one of her three long-range bombs Sunday, and a familiarly balanced South Carolina scoring attack — seven Gamecocks made at least three field goals — proved too much for a late Hawkeyes rally.

Kennedy Blades vs. Adeline Gray | 2023 Final X Round 2
More from Finals X.
In one corner we have Kennedy Blades, a junior world champion. 19 years old now, Blades came in 2nd in her bid for a spot on the Olympic team back in 2021. She's going to be one of the women who help usher in this new era of NCAA women's D1 wrestling as a commit to ASU. She's got a lot of things going for her. But in the other corner, is 6x world champion and Olympic silver medalist. She's one of the best credentialed wrestlers team USA has produced and on the short list for greatest American female wrestlers ever. So kind of a tall task for a teenager.

Let me just clarify this: I don’t like Turning Point USA or other conservative media sources or that Riley was part of that. However violence against a woman because she has”wrong think” is still violence against women.
Footage of ex-college swimmer Riley Gaines being chased and verbally abused by protesters, who shut down a talk she had been due to give at San Francisco State University (SFSU), has been widely shared on social media.
Gaines alleges she was "physically hit twice by a man," with video posted on Twitter showing her being escorted to safety by police whilst demonstrators chant and heckle.
An intense debate has developed about the role of trans athletes in women's sport, with Republican-controlled states passing a wave of laws banning their participation.
On Thursday Gaines had been due to address a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at SFSU, but this was unable to proceed after demonstrators gained access to the venue.
A video Gaines shared on Twitter, which appears to show her being escorted out of the venue whilst protesters chant "trans rights are human rights," has been viewed more than 180,000 times.
Gaines commented: "The prisoners are running the asylum at SFSU...I was ambushed and physically hit twice by a man. This is proof that women need sex-protected spaces. Still only further assures me I'm doing something right. When they want you silent, speak louder."
Tumblr media
Another video of Gaines leaving the room, whilst being protected by police officers, was shared on Twitter by David Llamas, the "TPUSA College Field Representative for the Bay Area."
In this footage, demonstrators chant "trans women are women," whilst one protester shouts slurs at Gaines, labelling her a "b*****."
This footage, which was retweeted by Gaines, has received over 280,000 views.
Tumblr media
Nancy Hogshead, CEO of the 'Champion Women,' campaign group, tweeted that "trans radicals punched Riley Gaines" who "is in police protection now." This post, which added "male violence is the bane of our existence," was also retweeted by Gaines.
In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, Eli Bremer, Gaines' agent, commented: "Instead of a thoughtful discussion tonight at SFSU, Riley was violently accosted, shouted at, physically assaulted, and barricaded in a room by protesters. It is stunning that in America in 2023, it is acceptable for biological male students to violently assault a woman for standing up for women's rights."
Newsweek has contacted San Francisco State University and Turning Point USA for comment by email.
Gaines had previously competed against Lia Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania student who in March 2022 became the first trans woman to win the NCAA Division I women's 500-yard freestyle event.
Speaking to Fox News in December, Gaines accused Thomas of having "an utter disregard and disrespect towards women."
Thomas insisted trans athletes aren't a threat to women's sport, during an interview with ESPN in May 2022.
She commented: "Trans women competing in women's sports does not threaten women's sports as a whole.
"The NCAA rules regarding trans women competing in women's sports have been around for 10-plus years. And we haven't seen any massive wave of trans women dominating."
In August Gaines appeared alongside former President Donald Trump at a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event in Dallas.
