A nursing agency is a company that provides nurses to hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities. Nurses are an essential part of the healthcare team. Entry 1 - About me page including: a brief on your background, sports interest, work experiences and career ambitions. In addition: a reflection on your study performance to date and areas to improve; expectations and aspirations for this subject and your internship.
Life I believe is a journey and the final destination should always be the goal. Hence, having small realistic, achievable goals has always been my target in life. Dubinsky and Schler (2019) argue dreams without goals are just dreams and ultimately lead to disappointment.
I am a Ghanaian who relocated to Australia six years ago from the United Kingdom. My nursing career took me through most cities in Africa whilst working for the World Health Organisation. It was through these circles that I found my first mentor who inspired me to get a degree and recommended a few institutions in Europe.
In sixth grade, I had a quote which read "always take time to figure out the system before you do anything". In principle, having studied nursing and community services I realised the key for me is sport. My world revolves around sports. My eyes lit up every time I catch a highlight or a reel of a sporting content. My brain feels invigorated listening to analysts and experts break down game day content, organisational structure or lay out of a particular sport.
Before moving overseas, I worked as an equipment manager and in some capacity as an assistant coach in my brother's soccer academy (MFC International Academy). I worked with parents, local councils, opinion leaders, and religious organization organising soccer competitions and offering coaching clinics. I am currently employed by the AFL working as a game day development officer, delivering footy sessions in schools and enhancing community participation through sports (Park et al., 2022). I also volunteer at the Keysborough junior footy club working to promote the game at the grassroot level.
I undertook a 12-week internship opportunity with Basketball Victoria in 2023 helping to use data to pinpoint areas of growth and improvement for the sport. I had the opportunity to sit in a grant proposal meeting between the chief of staff for community sports and Basketball Victoria, understanding how politics play a role in both professional and community sports. I also created a soccer team, which participates and won last winter six aside indoor soccer competition organised by the Casey City Council.

Image 1.0 showing a list of personal attributes based on personal and professional life.
It is my ultimate dream to use sports as a platform to impact change in my African community (Larkin et al., 2023). My ten-year goal is to have a well and truly established sporting agency, educating, motivating and providing career pathways for young Africans across the globe in various sporting circles. The journey across the last two years has been enlightening as I have discovered more about myself.
It is my believe that an internship will better prepare me for a professional practice. I am hoping in more ways than one, an internship will help bring to light my flaws and project my strengths. With an open mind and the willingness to learn, it is my desire to use an internship opportunity to really showcase my class and attributes.

令和 REIWA the beginning of a new era.
Welcome to year one of Reiwa. The beginning of a new era in Japanese history. The end of Heisei (平成時代). Welcome to the era of the reign of his Royal Highness Emperor Naruhito.
The Reiwa period will start on May 1st 2019 when Prince Naruhito ascends the throne to become the 126th emperor of Japan. 2019 corresponds to Heisei 31 until April 30th, and Reiwa 1 (令和元年 Reiwa gannen, gannen means "first year") from May 1st.
Reiwa ushers in a new era of significant change in Japanese society. New systems aimed at changing the way people work. The introduction of greater numbers of foreign workers - something that would never have been considered only ten years ago. Major revisions to the Labour Standards law will be implemented to stop the practice of working excessively long hours and to force Japanese people to take more time off work. Companies will be required to force employees to take at least five days of paid leave per year. Regulations with penalties for overtime are being introduced.
In the next five years, with the new visa status of “specified skilled worker” as many as 340,000 foreign workers are expected to move to Japan to work in 14 areas including nursing - and in the biggest shock to Japanese society - agriculture. Imagine that, foreigners tilling the fields and working on farms in Japan. I never thought I’d see that!
Numerous other things will see even more significant changes in Japanese society: the National pension premium will rise by ¥70 to ¥16,410 per month. A tax cut will be introduced for those who purchase electronic cars. Oh, and did I mention more foreigners.
So, what’s in a name?
令和 Reiwa. 令 rei: orders, command, ancient laws, decree, fortunate + 和 wa: harmony, peace, Japan, Japanese style.
Reiwa signifies order and harmony. This is the first time the kanji for nengō have been chosen from Japanese classical literature. The kanji were selected from the ancient Manyōshū (万葉集) - the oldest extant compilation of Japanese poetry, written between 600 and 759 CE. "初春令月、氣淑風和", which means "Nice weather in an auspicious month in spring." The two kanji used in nengō have always previously been chosen from ancient classical Chinese literature.
Reiwa is the 248th era in the history of Japan, the worlds oldest monarchy. Reiwa was the first time a new era has been announced while the reigning emperor is still living. Akihito is also the first emperor to abdicate for 200 years.
An era name, nengō (年号) is an indivisible part of public life and shared memory in Japan. Everything that happens in the years to come — births, deaths, natural disasters, cultural and social circumstances, elections and political scandals —all will be connected to the era name.
The proclamation of a new era has happened only twice in nearly a century. Japan has had 247 era names since instituting the system under Emperor Kōtoku in 645. From the Meiji era (1868–1912), there has been one era for each emperor. Previously, however, the name often changed several times during an imperial reign, such as in a spirit of renewal after an inauspicious event like a war, earthquake, epidemic, or major fire.
After his May 1 investiture, the new Emperor Naruhito will bear the new era name Reiwa for the duration of his rule and into death, becoming his official name after he passes.
Since Emperor Akihito announced his intention to abdicate, a highly confidential committee has been scrutinising ancient Japanese documents in search of the quintessential two kanji to describe the new era. The process, like the imperial system itself is steeped in Shintō ritual.
The introduction of the new era name brings with it some immediate conundrums in so much as it affects the printing and manufacturing of everything from government documents to calendars, family history registers, money, train tickets to computer software, official documentation to criminal and police records. Printers and programmers will be hard at work over the coming months bringing everything up to date. City offices and government agencies, which mostly use nengō in their computer systems and paperwork, have been preparing for months to avoid glitches. Car, bike, truck, bus, and boat manufacturers have been creating new VIN tags and Identification plates.
Officials will cross out Heisei on thousands of documents and stamp the new nengō above it until all old documents have been used and the new ones will come into use.
Schools and hospitals have been updating their electronic sign on systems and data bases to accept he new nengō.
The nengō is more than just a way of counting years for many Japanese. The introduction of a new nengō brings a lot of weight with it, it defines a period in history. As the Heisei era ends, it is remembered for all that it has defined in the hearts and minds of the Japanese.
The nengō is a word that captures the national mood of a period, similar to the way "the roaring '20s" evokes distinct feelings or images. Nengō gives a certain meaning to a historical period, it’s the same as when historians refer to Britain's "Victorian" or "Tudor" eras, tying the politics and culture of a period to a monarch.
The 64-year Shōwa era (昭和時代) was a period of extraordinary pandemonium. The reign of the Shōwa Emperor Hirohito (December 25, 1926 until his death on January 7, 1989) saw Japan move from a minor democracy to outright militarism, bringing aggressive colonial expansion. It pursued a war of aggression that killed millions across the Pacific. Something China and South Korea, even after 73 years, can’t ever forgive. Following the end of defeat in the war, Japan's remarkable economic growth has been called the “Japanese Miracle,” as the economy grew three times faster than other major nations. Shōwa has then generally come to be identified with Japan's recovery and rising global prominence in the decades after World War II.
The Heisei era (平成時代) the reign of Emperor Akihito (8 January 1989 until abdication on April 30 2019) began on a high with decades of robust economic growth which saw Japan become a world leader in electronics and manufacturing, textiles and fashion, art and science. But the economic bubble soon popped, ushering a long period of stagnation. A series of disasters, the Kobe earthquake in 1995 and the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011, have marred the image of the Heisei era. Particularly the governments inability to provide efficient and effective relief during these times has given the Heisei era a gloomy image.
Reiwa is looking already to see major changes in Japanese society. The introduction of more foreigners, the merger of major companies and the closing of others. The, as yet, supposed willingness of the Japanese government to implement better care for the people and a more robust and efficient labour system. Possible changes to the constitution.
With the 2020 Olympics in Japan and the beginning of a new era, Japan is hoping to move beyond the Heisei era, beyond all the turmoil and stagnation. The ascension of a new emperor and the naming of a new era gives the people the sense of a fresh start and it’s certain to have a positive effect on the economy and society as a whole.

A long-term care home is no place for younger people with disabilities
Jonathan Marchand had locked himself in a cage in front of Quebec’s National Assembly to highlight that many people with disabilities are trapped in long-term care facilities
André Picard, The Globe and Mail
Monday, August 17, 2020
Last Wednesday, Jonathan Marchand rolled up onto the lawn of Quebec’s National Assembly and parked his wheelchair in a three-by-three metre cage.
He has vowed to stay there until he is “freed” from the long-term care facility where he has lived for almost a decade, and can return home.
Mr. Marchand, a 43-year-old computer engineer, lives with muscular dystrophy, a condition in which muscles progressively weaken. In 2010, he underwent a tracheostomy and since then has used a ventilator to help him breathe. Mr. Marchand spent two years in hospital before being transferred to a CHSLD (Centre d’hébergement et de soins de longue durée), or long-term care facility, where he has lived since 2012.
Technically, he requires 24-hour-a-day care but said that, like anyone else, he has the right to live independently in the community.
“In the CHSLD, I’m a prisoner of the state,” Mr. Marchand said. “I’m trapped and I want to get out.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot has been written about the living conditions of elders in institutional care, but little attention has been focused on younger people with disabilities who also live in long-term care.
“We don’t know how many young people are living in LTC homes. What we do know is there are far too many,” said Shelley Fletcher, executive director of People First of Canada, a group that promotes deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities.
Mr. Marchand said there is no reason for him to be living in an institution populated principally by octogenarians with dementia who are dying. The care he requires can just as easily – and more humanely – be provided at home.
Specifically, Mr. Marchand wants Quebec to create a self-directed care program. He has even created a not-for-profit group, Coop ASSIST, to pilot the idea.
Self-directed or self-managed care programs exist all over Europe and in several Canadian provinces. They are designed so people with long-term medical and personal assistance needs (principally people with physical disabilities) can purchase the care they need to live independently.
The care, as it would be in long-term care or home care programs, is paid in part by the recipient and, depending on a person’s income, subsidized by the state. Self-directed care, however, requires significant commitment by the recipient, who essentially has to set up a business and hire staff such as support workers, nurses and physiotherapists to care for them.
But bureaucracy is something people who live with physical, developmental and psychiatric disabilities know all too well. In Quebec alone, there are 247 programs for people with disabilities spread over 19 ministries and para-governmental institutions.
Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nova Scotia all have well-established self-directed care programs. British Columbia has one of the most expansive programs, Choice in Supports for Independent Living.
Ontario’s previous Liberal government had an ambitious plan, creating a stand-alone agency called Self-Directed Personal Support Services Ontario. But the new Conservative government shut it down before it even got going and replaced it with a more modest program, Family Managed Care, that is directed largely at families of children with severe disabilities.
Marguerite Blais, Quebec’s Minister Responsible for Seniors and Informal Caregivers, visited Mr. Marchand in his cage last week and said the province is studying some of those models as it works to improve home care. The minister said she hoped Mr. Marchand could be back home within two years.
He said that isn’t good enough. Inclusion of people with disabilities in mainstream society needs to be supported not only in theory, but in practice.
Mr. Marchand said his living situation was not great to begin with, but the lockdown of long-term care homes because of COVID-19 made it even worse. Among other things, he could not see his partner, who had visited every day for a decade, for almost five months.
“Living in long-term care is no life,” Mr. Marchand said. “I’ve got no future. Nothing to look forward to.”
The common assumption, Mr. Marchand said, is that institutional care is cost-effective and self-directed care is too expensive. But that’s not true.
By his calculation, it costs about $335,000 a year to keep him in a CHSLD. Providing the care he needs at home would cost $256,000.
The other concern is that there would be an overwhelming demand, again with the worry being cost. But Mr. Marchand estimates that only about 30 to 70 people in the province would have the interest and ability to use self-directed care.
“The obstacle is not money, it’s political will.”
ADDENDUM
On Monday night, Mr. Marchand took down his cage after the province promised to get him out of long-term care as soon as possible and fund a pilot project on self-directed care. “It’s hard to cry victory but they heard me – and people with disabilities aren’t heard very often,” he said.

18 Freelance Sites to Find Your Next Gig
April 17, 2020 10 min read
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Consider this: Freelancers are expected to become the U.S. workforce majority in the near future. That means we can expect to see more and more freelancing job boards appear. That’s not to say we need them. Take a look at the Google search results for “freelance jobs.” You’ll find hundreds of websites that can connect you with prospective clients.
The problem, however, is that not all job boards are created equal. Some are a bit suspicious, causing both freelancers and businesses to question their legitimacy. Others are meant only for seasoned veterans. There are also boards capable of finding work quickly for freelancers, but they won’t get paid very much. Consider it the “price of entry” to the freelance realm.
These obstacles make finding freelance work more complicated than it has to be. That’s why I’ve put together a list of 18 freelance sites to help entrepreneurs find their next gig. Each of these sites is reputable and can be used by freelancers of all experience levels, empowering people to make the most of their skills in a shaky economy.

This is better suited for talented freelancers who have some previous experience under their belt. However, if you’re accepted, you can be certain that you’ll receive competitive compensation.
There are a couple of things that make Fiverr stand out from other leading freelance marketplaces. Users get to list the specific jobs where they excel. When I started podcasting, I hired someone on Fiverr to design my cover and another person to create the intro. When I had trouble getting the podcast listed on iTunes, I enlisted another expert to help solve the mystery.
Secondly, because most gigs start at $5, this is a great place to launch your freelancing career. After you land some clients and build up your portfolio, you can start charging more for your services.
For more than a decade, PeoplePerHour has been helping freelancers land web-based projects. This site has areas like marketing agency, SEO Company and software engineering. What makes it so appealing is that it streamlines the process of signing up. Client communication, project management and payments are all handled in one dashboard.
You can send 15 proposals to clients before having to sign up for the paid plan. However, you can still browse listings and get notified of new openings, even if you don’t sign up for the paid plan.
Upwork has been around in some form for years. Elance and oDesk were formed in 1999 and 2003, respectively, and merged to found Upwork. Today, Upwork is one of the largest freelance marketplaces in the world, hosting millions of freelancers in industries like design, development, accounting, marketing agency, writing and customer service.
Like Toptal, freelancers can find short-term tasks, recurring projects and even full-time contract work. Upwork is good for both entry-level and experienced freelancers because of the variety of work listed.
Freelancer states that it’s the “the world’s largest outsourcing marketplace,” connecting more than 30 million employees and freelancers across 247 countries. With Freelancer, you can a find a couple of different ways to work. The first way is by creating a profile that highlights your freelancing skills. When a client needs your specific skills, he can chat with you in real time.
The other way is by browsing for work and placing bids on projects that match your talents and interests. When your work is complete, you’ll receive a secure payment via the site’s Milestone Payment System.
SimplyHired is a job search engine that helps people find remote or local work in 12 different countries. SimplyHired contains more than 100 job boards, meaning you’ll have access to millions of job openings ranging from marketing agency to customer service. You can even find nursing and warehouse work.
You can also search for both part-time and full-time work, making SimplyHired a great platform to quickly land a job. It produces a blog that contains helpful advice on how to make yourself more attractive to recruiters.
99designs should be your go-to marketplace if you’re designer. Anyone truly skilled in creating logos and web and app design can find a home here. Creative freelancers can search for jobs where clients need someone to create marketing agency materials, packaging or merchandise like T-shirts.
The site also provides numerous resources to assist designers in enhancing their skills. These resources include how-to tips, tutorials, tool kits, e-books and even interviews with seasoned designers.
Are you a creative professional or a digital marketing agency expert? If so, you can land your next gig through Aquent. The site gives freelancers the chance to find remote or on-site work in the U.S. You can also find work in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Australia or Japan.
What’s most appealing about Aquent is that its Gymnasium offers free online courses that can help you strengthen your existing talent.
The Creative Group is part of the large Robert Half staffing agency. The site is meant for individuals in creative fields like art, copywriting, photography, graphic design and marketing agency. You can find temporary, project-based or full-time work.
Simply upload your resume to the site or share your LinkedIn profile. Robert Half’s specialists find the right job for your specific expertise and preferences from there.
Envato Studio was established by designers, developers and creatives. This studio can help you land short-term or long-term projects. When a client needs your unique skill set, he browses the site to compare portfolios and pricing. You’ll receive recommendations from the Envato Studio community.
Once you’re hired, Envato Studio holds the payment until the job is completed and the client is satisfied with the work. Throughout the course of the project, the platform gives you a chance to receive real-time feedback from the client. You can be certain you’re on the right track with this direct communication.

Krop is a job board solely for creatives, like copywriters, photographers and designers. On top of creating a profile to showcase your experience, you can use Krop to build and host your portfolio.
Another perk of using Krop it that it’s a site that promotes freelancers to clients searching for new team members.
Since 2005, Authentic Jobs has been connecting creative and web professionals to find freelancers. You can contract or moonlight on the job with companies like Apple, Facebook, ESPN or The Motley Fool for free. If you’re a freelancer interested in working with these companies, start browsing listings for everything from content strategists to back-end developers to project managers.
Because compensation can range anywhere from under $29,000 to more than $100,000 annually, it’s a nice platform for freelancers of all experience levels.

Chances are high that you already have a LinkedIn profile. Why not get the most out of it? LinkedIn is used by more than 420 million members in some 200 countries, making LinkedIn one of the best resources for connecting professionals.

During a public-health crisis, we need good information that is clearly communicated
Monday, January 27, 2020
ANDRÉ PICARD, The Globe and Mail
'We're better prepared this time" seems to have become the mantra of Ontario officials dealing with the challenge of the Wuhan coronavirus.
How the case of the fiftysomething male who was transported by ambulance to Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Jan. 22 plays out will demonstrate whether that is true.
So far, so good.
The patient disclosed immediately that he had travelled to Wuhan. He was transported to hospital by paramedics wearing protective gear and is now in isolation in a negative-pressure room. Tracing of contacts is well under way.
We're doing the medicine right this time around, and that's comforting. Mind you, it would be difficult to respond more poorly than we did at the outset of the 2003 SARS debacle.
On March 7, 2003, two men with SARS were admitted to hospital in Canada.
At 4:55 p.m., Mr. C., 55, was transported by ambulance to Vancouver General Hospital. Three hours later, Mr. T., 43, walked into the emergency room of Scarborough General Hospital.
The aftermath of the SARS outbreak in Ontario is well known: The province would record 247 SARS cases (half of them health workers) and 44 deaths (including one doctor and two nurses), and the province's economy virtually ground to a halt as SARS panic spread.
British Columbia didn't have an outbreak; it recorded four cases and no deaths.
The difference was that B.C. was prepared.
The BC Centre for Disease Control was pro-active, monitoring the spread of SARS in China closely, and sending bulletins to emergencyroom staff. As a result, Mr. C. was isolated immediately. Health workers took appropriate precautions, from paramedics to janitorial staff. The tracing of contacts was swift and rigorous.
By contrast, Ontario had no central agency monitoring infectious diseases. Mr. T. sat in a crowded emergency room, then was placed in a ward. A nurse, who was an avid reader of Chinese media was the one who alerted the hospital that the patient probably had SARS and more caution was required.
By then, Mr. T. had already become a "superspreader," infecting many health workers and patients who crossed paths with him. It took a while to trace his contacts and, in a domino effect, the infection spread into the community and to other hospitals, with tragic consequences.
But good medicine is only one aspect of controlling outbreaks and epidemics.
Communicating public-health messages is, arguably, just as important.
In the grand scheme of things, 44 deaths is not a huge number, especially when you consider that in Canada SARS was essentially a hospitalbased infection that posed little risk to the general public.
Fear caused billions of dollars in economic damage in 2003, not the SARS coronavirus.
The way to assuage fear of the Wuhan coronavirus is with good information, clearly communicated. In that regard, it is far from obvious that Ontario has learned the lessons of SARS.
At a hastily arranged press conference on Saturday afternoon, there were six people (and one microphone) at the table: Christine Elliott, Ontario's Health Minister; Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer of health; Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario's associate chief medical officer of health; Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health; Dr. Peter Donnelly, president and chief executive of Public Health Ontario, and Dr. Andy Smith, president and chief executive of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
All of that public-health firepower to make an announcement that can be summarized in a short sentence: Canada has identified its first "presumptive" case of coronavirus.
Talk about overkill when one voice would suffice.
Not to mention that seeing the six dour faces at the table was eerily reminiscent of the daily televised press conferences that Ontario staged during SARS, where officials often delivered contradictory and confusing messages.
All the fine people at Saturday's presser have a role to play in the response to the threat of the new coronavirus. But for the most part, they should be doing their work in the shadows, not in front of a microphone.
Clearly, most of them were there to mark their territory, not to offer insight.
During a crisis or emergency, the public wants a trusted and consistent source of information. When you have six people talking, it leaves the impression that no one is in charge.
What is required is one well-briefed individual with authoritative credentials to be the chief spokesperson.
That creates public confidence and lends clarity and credibility to the messages.
During a public-health crisis, what we need from our leaders is clear information, not territorial pissings.
