Chapter 45 : Her chapter

I felt myself waking up slowly but kept my eyes closed. My lips curled slightly when I heard my boyfriend’s voice from the shower and I forced myself to open my eyes. I sat up in bed and stretched but when I pushed the covers off of me, I felt a shiver run up my spine despite the fact that it was the end of june and that it was most likely very warm outside. I put my feet off the bed and moved my toes on the carpet before breathing in and getting up. The door was ajar and the closer I got, the better I could hear Niall sing. I pushed on the door slightly and leaned against the door frame, listening to his voice as the steam hit my skin and warmed me.

I had never felt so happy in my entire life with someone and even after all these months, I could barely believe we were dating. I crossed my arms on my chest and leaned my head on the frame too, staring at my boyfriend singing and dancing in the shower. After a while he turned to me and saw me staring at him. He smiled back and made a quick head movement but I shook my head slightly. He rolled his eyes with a smile and opened the glass door. His hair was full of foam and he looked cuter than ever, making me nibble on my bottom lip despite myself.

“Please?” he asked, raising his eyebrows and making me roll my eyes.

I took a few steps closer, letting my arms fall on each side of my body, and his lips curled more at my sight. When he was finally able to reach me, he grabbed the front of my shirt and pulled me his way, making me chuckle.

“No no, I took a shower last night remember?”

He smirked and raised his eyebrows at me, not letting go. “And then I fucked your brains out, remember?” he replied in a smartass tone. “Come on, you smell like good sex and sweat.”

I laughed at his words and let him pull me with him. He closed the door behind me and I held my breath as the warm water fell on me and soaked my shirt and panties. Niall smiled more and quickly moved his head back right under the stream to rinse his hair. I stared at his naked body as he closed his eyes, running his hand through his hair to make sure all the soap was gone.

Without thinking, I ran my hands on his wet chest and quickly, he moved his head up again and opened his eyes, bending down to reach my smile with his. The kiss was gentle and soft and I felt water drops fall from his hair to my cheek. A wave of well-being washed over me and I pressed my hands more on his chest.

“What were you singing?” I asked, tilting my chin up.

“Something I wrote. I’ll sing it to you when it’s done.”

I smiled and licked my lips, staring at him some more. I felt like Niall hadn’t written anything in months and I knew he was missing it. I loved watching and listening to him when he was playing guitar, or when he was sitting in front of the piano, but it hadn’t happened much until very recently. He was not the type to share and I respected that, but I was curious and interested in everything that made him happy.

“Happy Birthday petal.” he whispered against my mouth. “How does it feel to date a younger man like me?”

I laughed against his mouth and felt his lips curl against mine.

“Feels amazing.” I admitted, still amused. “Better than yesterday, for sure.”

“But not as good as tomorrow, yea, I know.”

I laughed more and felt his hands slip under my drenched shirt, reaching under my breasts slowly. I bit my bottom lip as he stared at me before kissing me again but deeper this time. I could feel my whole body throb until his thumbs brushed under my breasts. I quickly held my breath again, my heartbeats accelerating, but he just slid his hands back down to my waist.

“Mm, come on darling, take a shower, i’ll go prepare something while you do.”

“Nooo!” I complained when he took a step back. “You can’t turn me on and then leave me here alone.”

He laughed and shook his head, pushing the glass door of the shower again and getting out.

“Such a horny girl.” he just let out, clearly amused by my behavior.

I sent him puppy eyes but he just shook his head and closed the door, trapping me in the shower before blowing me a kiss and leaving.

I grimaced but decided to wash my hair and body quickly after getting undressed and when I finally got out of the shower, I grabbed a fluffy towel only to realize it was warm and I quickly wrapped it around me.

“Thanks for putting it in the dryer.” I let out with a smile when I walked back into our bedroom. “You’re perfect.”

He had put sweatpants and a t-shirt back on and I stared at his back as I tried to find a similar outfit in one of his drawers. With a sigh, I took my towel off and dressed up before rubbing the towel in my hair to dry it more. After a few minutes, he turned around and sent me a fond smile and I smiled back until he handed me something.

“This is one of your gifts.” He explained, holding out a box about as large as a book, wrapped in silver and pink paper. “The personal one.”

I felt my heart skip a few beats inside my chest and smiled as big as possible, pressing my lips together. These were the gifts coming from Niall that I preferred. Of course, I enjoyed the trips, the spa days, the jewels and the activities he gave but the gifts with a meaning meant a million times more and Niall always knew exactly what would make me happy. He gave me things I didn’t even know I needed before.

I licked my lips and grabbed it, unwrapping it very slowly as he stared at my fingers. I let the paper fall on the floor when I noticed an old picture of us in a frame. It was the one I told him to bring on his trip and my lips curled more but i noticed something at the bottom and frowned, moving the frame up to have a better look. My lips parted when I noticed what it was and I looked up in his eyes. It was a card that was part of a game Lottie had brought at the lodge. I remembered picking up that card from the “Kiss & Tell” game before rushing to the bathroom and locking myself in it. I hadn’t told anyone what was on the card except Niall. We had been laying in the dark and I had showing him right before telling him it was him I wanted to kiss, but I didn’t have the guts to. I looked down again at the card and read the words. “Kiss the person you love the most in the room.”

“I kept it and I didn’t know why. It was in my wallet all this time. I remember wondering how I would have felt if you had kissed me instead of Harry after picking up that card, you know?” he shrugged and looked down at it. “That night you said you loved me more than anyone else in the world and I said I did too. I didn’t understand back then why it was so important for me but now I do.”

He took a step closer and brought his hands to my waist, waiting until I looked up in his eyes again.

“When we fought a few months ago after my trip, I left you here to get drunk. We both went to bed mad, or at least not on good terms, and I realized how wrong it was. I want to keep this frame in our room, right next to the bed, so every time we fight or argue, we always work things out here before falling asleep. I will always kiss the person I love the most right before I fall asleep. Every single night. I promise.”

I felt myself tear up and swallowed the lump in my throat. I couldn’t talk, I knew that my voice would crack, and without thinking, I crushed my mouth against his, It hurt slightly but he didn’t say anything. He just pulled me closer and deepened the kiss. He tasted so fucking good and I felt tears fall down my face as we kept on kissing for I don’t know how long. When he pulled away, I kept my eyes closed and brushed my lips against his.

“When you said you were romantic I thought you were the type, you know, to give flowers and stuff.”

He laughed and moved his upper body back to look in my eyes.

“There’s a bouquet waiting for you int he kitchen.”

This time, i’m the one who laughed. I turned around and put the frame next to the bed on the small table and sighed as I looked at our younger faces on the picture. I wanted this house to be full of pictures of us, whether they were recent or old.

“Come, let’s go bake that cake of yours.”

I turned back to him with a frown and tilted my head.

“I gotta bake my own birthday cake?”

He laughed and grabbed my hand, pulling me with him until the kitchen and I noticed all the ingredients already out along with a big bouquets of white and purple lilacs placed in the middle of the table.

“The florist said it looked ridiculous and tried to convince me to add other flowers but I knew that’s what you wanted.” he pointed out. “Just in case though, there’s also a bouquet of roses in the living room.”

I smiled more and chuckled, loving the fact that he knew me so well, and took a step closer to him to kiss his lips.

“Aaaand maybe a few tulips next to the piano.” he grimaced before I brushed my lips on his jaw.

“How are you so perfect?”

He searched for my mouth with his and kissed me deeply again. I was not even surprised that his kisses still made butterflies hit the inside of my stomach, even after so many months. I knew it would always be like that.

“Okay, come on now, let’s bake that cake yea?” he said a little louder, getting out of my embrace and turning around to go grab the flour. “We got up late and we have a busy evening and an even busier night!”

“Niall, I said I didn’t want anything big.” I complained with a grimace, letting my head fall back on my shoulders.

“I promise on my life you’re gonna have fun! It’s just a few hours with our friends, and then i’m bringing you somewhere else just the two of us.”

I wanted to be annoyed but the truth was, I was touched and very very curious. I walked up to him as he was cracking an egg, letting it fall in a bowl and I sighed low of happiness.

“Thank you, Niall.”

He turned his head quickly to peck my lips with a light sound and I chuckled.

“Come on, read the recipe out loud will you?”

Quickly, we made the cake mix and ended up having a bit more difficulty working on the icing. I ended up a bit annoyed and searched through his fridge, taking the cream cheese out and putting it on the counter.

“We’ll just prepare the easiest icing ever and pretend we’re amazing bakers, how’s that?”

He laughed and we started working on it in silence right after putting the mix in the oven.

“Just a bit of milk.” I specified. “Do you have vanilla?”

I watched him combine everything in a bowl as I nibbled my bottom lip and added icing sugar slowly to the mix.

“You know, we’re actually a good team.” I pointed out.

I watched him dip his finger in the icing and sticking his tongue out to get a taste.

“Heyy, what about me?” I frowned jokingly before he dipped an other finger in it and wiped the icing on my cheek, making me groan.

“Come here.”

He pulled me closer and licked my cheek, making a shiver run up my spine at the contact of his tongue with my skin.

“You’re right, it tastes amazing, we’re a good team.” he admitted low. “Not just for baking.”

He took the icing again, taking more of it with his finger and putting it on my neck. I held my breath as his tongue ran on my skin and quivered again in his arms.

“I just took a shower, remember?”

“Oh shut up.” he let out, making me laugh, as he grabbed my waist and pulled me closer.

“Can I get a taste, too?”

Without answering, he brought his lips against mine and kissed me deeply but very slowly.  I closed my eyes, running my hand in his hair and letting a moan escape my lips. He swallowed it and I felt his fingers slip slightly under my shirt, on the skin of my back. I laughed against his mouth when he broke the kiss and shook my head.

“I meant you know, really taste.”

“Mmhm.” he shrugged, pulling away and taking the icing bowl. “I know that’s what you meant, but you can’t taste your cake before tonight.”

“But-”

“Don’t argue!” he cut me with a smirk. “Go in the living room, i’ll join you, okay?”

I groaned and let my feet rub on the wood floor in an annoying noise as a sign of protestation. It’s only when I reached the living room that my lips curled back again. There was a literal fort made with blankets and cushions and I let out a chuckle of amazement.

“Niall?” I asked loud enough for him to hear.

“Sit down! I’m coming!”

I chuckled and got on my knees, pushing the blanket that acted as a door only to sit on the tiny mattress. I couldn’t believe he had taken the time to make a fort in his own living room and I started wondering how long it took him to plan that. He had placed his tablet on the side and when he joined me, I frowned slightly.

“Why did you bring this?” I asked, pointing it right before a smile reappeared on my face.

He handed me a bowl of ice cream and I started jumping slightly on my ass while still sitting.

“Don’t move too much, it’s not that solid.” he laughed a bit. “I thought we could watch a movie together?”

I sent him a fond smile and tilted my head again before nodding very slowly.

“Great! So I bought your favorite ice cream but added candies, chocolate syrup and caramel, the way you like it.”

“Thank you, Nee.” I let out as he sat in front of me. I moved my upper body closer to kiss him. “Thank you so fucking much.” I kissed him again. “Thank you.” Again. “Thank you.” And again.

“You also get to pick the movie.” he let out with a smile, kissing me back. “We’ll watch anything you want. It’s your day.”

I sat back and looked at him with a smirk, raising my eyebrows as his face changed.

“Now you’re scaring me.” he admitted as I laughed, grabbing his tablet. “Wait what are you doing? Isn’t the movie you want to watch on netflix?”

I held his tablet against me and raised my eyebrows at him again.

“Do you promise we’ll watch whatever I want?”

It took him a few seconds but he finally nodded.

“I promise.”

The bar was loud and crowed but we quickly found our friends waiting for us, sitting a bit further with beer and sangria pitchers. I smiled more, a bit excited, and everyone greeted us, telling me ‘happy birthday’ for the first time in person on that day. Louis was the last one and he got up to wrap his arms around me before I hugged him back.

“Happy birthday princess.” he whispered after kissing one of my cheeks and pulling me closer. “I hope your day is perfect, that’s what you deserve.”

I laughed when we pulled away and bit on my bottom lip.

“It is, I have the perfect boyfriend and he made this day perfect.”

We sat down and I felt Niall’s hand slide on my thigh. I quickly put my hand over his and intertwined our fingers, squeezing them hard.

“What did she make you watch?” Louis asked with a smirk. “Back To The Future again?”

Niall’s smile fell and he rolled his eyes, making Louis laugh.

“Which one?”

“Louis, don’t even ask.” Niall argued, shaking his head and making me smile more.

“We didn’t watch Back To The Future.” I pointed out, leaning on the table to get closer to Louis. “I made him watch This Is Us.”

Louis’ eyes moved from me to Niall then back at me and finally on Niall before he burst into laughter, making Niall growl next to me. I squeezed his fingers tighter but I couldn’t help the smile that spread on my face.

“How was it, Neil? To watch a movie with you in it with your girlfriend by your side?” Louis teased.

Niall raised his eyebrows and nose up as he leaned one of his elbow on the table, staring in his friend’s eyes.

“The worst was actually looking at you for an hour and a half, Tommo.”

Louis laughed again and shrugged.

“Guess you’re cursed, mate, because here I am again!”

I laughed and rolled my eyes at their banter until Louis grabbed a glass and poured me sangria. Niall did the same for himself with beer and he finally sighed, the left corner of his lips raising up.

“You know, I can’t really blame her though.” Niall joked. “The girl enjoys looking at me, I just give her what she needs.”

“Oh shut up.” I let out, making him laugh more. “Now what’s so special about tonight? Why are we here anyway?”

I glanced around before meeting Louis’ eyes and he smirked, raising his eyebrows. I didn’t like it and frowned, suddenly a bit scared of what was to come. Julie chuckled and it caught my attention, making me look at her.

“It’s karaoke night.” she explained with a sigh but also a smile on her lips. “And apparently, we’re all going to sing.”

I felt suddenly extremely nervous and without realizing it, I squeezed my boyfriend’s fingers hard between mine.

“Ouch, darling, watch the fingers, they’re important.” he chuckled. “For music and for… you know.. pleasure.”

“Niall.” I whispered, looking down at our hands together. “You know I hate being on a scene. I don’t like attention.”

“You did it a few years ago and you had fun.”

I sent him an annoyed look and sighed, raising my nose up in a grimace. He was right, I had sang a song a while ago at a karaoke night and we always had a lot of fun doing those in someone’s living room, but in public it was a bit different. I was already a bit shy around my friends, so to think i would do it in front of a bunch of strangers made it even worse.

“Here.” Louis let out, pushing the sangria pitcher closer. “Drink up. I’ll go first.”

I swallowed the whole glass in front of me and filled it out again as I watched Louis get on stage and grab a microphone.

“Here’s one of the best written songs in the whole world.” he only explained as the music started.

I held my breath and smiled when I recognized the oasis song and mouthed it with him.

“So Sally can wait, she knows it’s too late as she’s walking on by My soul slides away, but don’t look back in anger I heard you say.”

When he was done and the music stopped, we all got up and started clapping. Liam even whistled loud and I let out a ‘woohoo!“ when he got off stage. He hugged me and bent down to whisper in my ear.

“Do it now, it’s worth it.”

I quickly nodded and he moved away. He extended his hand and I slapped in it before bumping my fist against his.

“Come on, you can do it.” he added as I sent him a smile.

I turned to Niall and I smiled without thinking. I watched him push his glasses on his nose and a bunch of memories of us came back to my mind. I felt so lucky to have him in my life and I chuckled.

“Just for you.”

I didn’t wait for his answer and ran up the stairs as a guy walked up to me to ask me which song I wanted to sing. I told him and he chuckled before nodding and finally left after handing me the microphone.

“I dedicate this to my best friend in the whole wide world.”

The first notes started and I kept my gaze on Niall and when I started singing, I saw him start laughing hard, his mouth wide open. He let his head fall back and clapped in his hands a few times to encourage me.

“Right from the start, couldn’t pull us apart, it just works Nobody else ever gets me as well on this earth Like rock and roll, Marshall’s and telly’s Mac and cheese, PB’s and jellies Some things are better together, and that’s you and me-e

I smiled as I sang when I noticed all my friends were standing up and dancing together and when the song stopped, I bowed down quickly and ran back to my friends without really giving them any attention. Niall bent down slightly, his arms open, and I ran to him.. He picked me up for a few seconds and put me back down before kissing me hard, laughing against my lips.

“Good song. Thank you.” he whispered, pulling away. “Now listen to mine, yea?”

I nodded and he grabbed my hand before walking to the stage. When he was far enough, my hand slipped out of his and I just stared at him as he grabbed the microphone. He cleared his throat and licked his lips, making my heart melt in my chest. I sat down but remained on the edge of my chair as he talked.

“For the love of my life.”

It took me literally one note to recognize the song and I held my breath as I felt myself tense. I tried to remember all the words of the song and something twisted in my stomach.

I don’t know why but slowly, I got up and walked closer to the scene as we stared at each other. Was it possible for this love story to last forever? Could this love we felt for each other never fade away or die?

I didn’t scream when he was done but I heard all our friends do it. He jumped off the stage and cupped my face the way he had done it after playing the song he had written for me and when his wet lips met mine, my eyes fluttered close.

“It’s been six moths but I love you as much as I did back then, maybe even more.” he whispered, kissing me deeply again. “Definitely more.”

“Thank you, Niall.” I breathed out, swallowing hard as I felt myself tear up for the second time that day. “This day is perfect.”

“This day is not over.” he added, smiling more, the palms of his hands warming my already burning cheeks. “Happy birthday Olivia, I love you.”

Synopsis: Nara and Hoseok split ways six years ago. She was not a top trauma nurse who couldn’t be happier with her life and Hoseok was head of her father’s security detail. When her father is kidnapped and her life is put in danger, Hoseok and Nara are reunited. What will come of the reunion and will they find her father before it’s too late?

[6 Years Ago]

“H-hoseok please don’t do this. You don’t have to do this!”

The ground felt like it was cracking beneath Nara’s feet, the earth ready to swallow her whole with each word he said.

“It’s over, Nara.”

“Then look me in the eyes when you say it, you coward!”

She stared him down, willing her bottom lip to stop quivering and dared him to repeat himself.

He steeled himself as he looked at her, shoulders squared. He couldn’t back down now. This was the only way. His two months was up and this had to end. Hoseok already loathed himself, so this would just be another item to add to the list of reasons why.

“Nara-yah, let’s end this here, hm?”

“No, let’s not. Not without an explanation. You owe me that much, Hoseok.”

The knots in Nara’s stomach twisted and turned to the point she felt faint. She faltered, reaching out to the nearby railing to steady herself.

Hoseok reached out to catch her if she were to fall but stopped himself, knowing that if he touched her now, there was no way he could finish what needed to be done.

“I owe you everything, Nara”

“Pfft, then why? Why are you doing this to me? To us? Hoseok, this doesn’t make sense.”

“I’m not right for you, I don’t know how to love someone without hurting them. I can’t be the person that you deserve and I never will be. I thought I could, but I can’t.”

“That’s utter bullshit, Hoseok, and you know it!”

“P-Please Nara-yah”

To Nara, Hoseok’s voice cracking was a sign that he didn’t want to do this. That there was some other reason he was trying to leave her and she was damn determined to find out.

She took his moment of uncertainty and used it to walk up to him until they were mere inches apart. Cupping his face in one hand, she lay the other on his chest over his heart.

Hoseok’s breath hitched and caught in his throat. The urge to lean his head into her hand like he had done so many times before was too strong and for a moment he let his façade fall.

“Hoseok, I know this isn’t what you want. Please tell me what’s wrong.”

He let himself relish in the feel of her hands on him a few seconds longer before regaining his resolve, realizing he was an idiot to think she would let go this easily. Nara wasn’t dumb and she had always been a fighter. She wasn’t going to just let him end it this way.

“Dammit just tell me why you’re doing this! I love you, Hoseok.”

And there it was. The very words he needed to hear in order to end this once and for all. It would gut him to his core, but he would deal with that later. For now, he had to get this done and over with. He could punish himself and wallow in self-pity afterward.

“But I don’t love you, Nara. I’m sorry.” 

It was barely a whisper. He couldn’t muster much more with the enormity of the lie he just told weighing on him.

Nara’s hands dropped, as she stumbled back, disbelief clouding her mind. Tears welling in her eyes as she continued to step back and away from the man she had spent the past two years loving.

“I-I’m so sorry, Nara - -”

“I never want to see you again.”

She would hate him for walking away like this, but it was what was best for her. His life - the life that Hyunwoo and even her father lived, wasn’t meant for her. She deserved more, infinitely more.

Hoseok has been through hell in his life, but up to that point nothing had been harder than looking into her eyes and breaking her heart. When Hwang Ji had brought him into the family, he never imagined that he’d meet and fall in love with someone like Nara.

He was completely taken with her from the moment they met. He knew from the beginning that it could never work between them, and for the first few months, he resisted temptation and remained strong. But there was just something about Nara that pulled him in, almost against his will, and refused to let go. 

She was bubbly and energetic, smart as hell, witty, raised in wealth and luxury, but the most down to earth person he’d ever met. She loved people fiercely and was loyal to a fault. He eventually gave in to his feelings for her and for the past two years he had known more happiness being by her side than he had ever felt.

That was until three weeks ago when he overheard her talking with her father about being accepted into one of the top trauma nursing programs in the country. An acceptance she planned to decline. When her father asked her why, she simply stated that she would be just as happy training at a local hospital as opposed to half way across the country at Ansan.

Hoseok knew this was crap. Nara had talked about the possibility of training at Ansan since they first met. He knew she was only staying for him. He couldn’t let that happen. He wouldn’t let her sacrifice her future, her dreams, her happiness for him. Nara was the most kind, caring, selfless, and compassionate and  person he knew. She was going to make an outstanding nurse and she deserved the best training their country had to offer.

He knew that she wouldn’t leave of her own accord, not while they were still together. So it was then that Hoseok decided to end things. 

He knew it would be the hardest thing he would ever do, but even he couldn’t have foreseen how it would tear him to shreds, leaving him unable to sleep for months, and feeling like he could never catch a breath. But even then it didn’t matter, because he would do anything for her. Nara deserved more than someone like him and the danger that his lifestyle could put her in.

That’s how he found himself in the situation he was in now, trying to keep himself together as he looked into the eyes of the only woman he had ever loved and denied that exact fact.

“But I don’t love you, Nara. I’m sorry.”

He thought he would collapse as he watched her face fall, hit with the weight of his words. And when she told him she never wanted to see him again, his knees almost hit the hardwood and tears threatened to break the threshold they were maintaining at his lash line. He expected this type of reaction from her, but none of his mental preparation had been enough he heard her say the words aloud.

Nara accepted the offer at Ansan and left a few days later and Hoseok spent the next few weeks in a drunken stupor. Even Hyunwoo, his best friend, couldn’t lift his spirits. Instead it was Hwang Ji who delivered Hoseok words in which he could find solace. Hoseok expected his boss and mentor to be furious with him. Nara was his beloved daughter after all, but instead Hwang Ji offered Hoseok wisdom and understanding.

One evening over a bottle of soju, Hoseok confided in him the reason he left Nara the way he did. Hwang Ji said he understood and offered words that would help Hoseok find a way to live with the guilt and heartbreak - even if it couldn’t make it go away.

“Hoseok-ah, the best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, and the capacity for sacrifice.”

Hwang Ji’s voice had a gravel-like undertone. It boomed in his chest and around the room even when he was speaking in hushed tones. It was warm, reassuring, and calming as he placed a caring hand on Hoseok’s shoulder, squeezing ever so lightly.

“And you my son, are one of the best people I know. I could never be angry with you for the sacrifice you made for my Nara.”

That meant more to Hoseok than he could ever express, since to him, Hwang Ji was the best man Hoseok had met in his 22 years. Sure, he was a mafioso like so many others in the area, but so was Hoseok, and Hyunwoo. But Hwang Ji was different than most.

Hwang Ji was a mob boss with a different code. He had more morals than most others in their line of work. He didn’t deal in drugs or prostitution, he didn’t own a chain of strip clubs or seedy nightclubs with nefarious dealings in VIP rooms. His empire was built on a handful of casinos which housed illegal betting houses and underground fight clubs. He also dealt in illegal trade of art to bidders of great wealth and public standing.

For this reason the other mob bosses despised him. They hated that he was so successful without having to stoop to their levels. They felt he thought he was better than them. This made Hwang Ji the recipient of a growing number of threats and attempts on his life which lead to Hwang Ji forming a special security team to ensure extra protection for him and Nara. 

Hoseok and Hwang Ji met one night when the latter made a rare appearance at one of his fight clubs on the lookout for new members to recruit to his security newly implemented team.

[8 Years Ago]

Hoseok had been so cold and his head was pounding. He took a chance entering the illegal fight in the hopes that he would win and earn enough cash for a few nights at a crappy motel and some ramen. Somewhere warm and off the streets, at least. Instead he got his ass beat and now he was freezing, starving and in pain.

He needed to find somewhere to sleep and quick before he froze to death. Maybe he could find an empty train car or something. At this point he didn’t much care. He was used to sleeping in all kinds of places, from abandoned buildings, under bridges, to park benches. He’d been doing it since he aged out of the foster care system and was subsequently forced to leave his foster home two years prior.

Just as he spotted a bridge that he figured could provide enough cover from the harsh winds, a large black car pulled up next to where he stood on the sidewalk. He gripped the straps of his backpack tightly, prepared to make a run for it, as one of the heavily tinted windows rolled down revealing an impeccably dressed middle aged man with kind features and salt and pepper hair.

“Hello, my name is Hwang Ji. Do you mind if we speak for a moment?”

“What for?” 

“I have a business proposition for you” 

Hoseok looked around realizing there was no one else in sight. He swallowed hard realizing he could be killed or kidnapped right now and no one would be around to see.

Hwang Ji could sense his concern. “Look, it’s nothing weird. I saw you fight and you have potential. I have an offer for you, that’s all” 

“Now I know you’re lying. I got my ass handed to me back there. Potential? Are you crazy?”

“Sure you lost, but you have skill and I’d like to offer you the chance to cultivate it.” Hwang Ji countered.

Hoseok still wasn’t sure, rubbing the back of his neck nervously and scraping his foot along the concrete, kicking at rocks that weren’t there.

“Look, you look starved. Let me at least buy you something to eat and you can hear me out. What do you say?”

Hwang Ji took Hoseok to a convenience store around the corner where he bought him some ramen, sausages, kimbap, and a soda. It was all Hoseok would allow as he was still weary of the man and also he didn’t want to feel like he was taking advantage even though he was more hungry than he cared to admit.

He was surprised to see the elder buy and eat the same items as him. He was sure that someone as well dressed and clearly established as him wouldn’t be caught dead eating such cheap food.

As they ate, Hwang Ji explained who he was and what he did as well as what he had in mind for Hoseok. He wanted to train him to become a member of his special security team. And with this offer came free room and board.

Hoseok almost choked when he heard him explain. It sounded too good to be true. Hwang Ji let out a light hearted laugh, patting Hoseok’s back and passing him his soda.

“I’ll tell you what, why don’t you come stay with me and train for a week? And while you’re there you can get some much needed sleep. At the end of the week you can give me your answer.” 

Still skeptical but finding the prospect of hot meals and a bed hard to pass up, Hoseok agreed. The week of training and rest came and went, but Hoseok didn’t. He stayed with Hwang Ji, training, and growing ever closer to the man while he climbed his way to the top of his security team.

Now here he was sitting across from the only father he ever had and not regretting for one minute the choice he made that cold night two years ago.

[Present Day]

She yawned as she made her way down the stairs, the aroma of strong black coffee calling to her like a siren song. All of the boys were already awake and up to their own antics and the kitchen was like a zoo. No, not a zoo because a zoo had some semblance of order. The animals were separated and contained. No, this, this was the jungle. She didn’t mind though. All the chaos reminded her of her days in the E.R. That and she loved the sense of normalcy it brought to the rather grave reason they had all been brought together in the first place. 

Watching the boys - her makeshift family - scramble around in their own little worlds, warmed her heart the same way the coffee she sipped seemed to be warming her cold and stiff body, bringing it back to life.

“Morning, noona.” Kihyun greeted, picking up a plate of food from the stove, turning toward Nara to place it in front of her. 

“Changkyun will be back soon. Hopefully he will have some intel for us.”

Changkyun had been putting in charge of “extracting” some information out of a lead they had for the whereabouts of her father.

It had been a few weeks now since her father was first kidnapped. She had resigned herself to the fact that it was highly possible that her father was no longer alive. It wouldn’t stop her from doing everything in her power to find him, whether she brought him home alive, or he she had to lay him to rest next to her mother, she would bring him home.

At the same time, Changkyun, not paying attention, slid through the kitchen in his socks in a mockery of the famous scene from “Risky Business”, coming to a stop at the end of the kitchen island.

“Yah! You scared the shit out of me!” Kihyun shouted at the younger.

“I am frighteningly handsome, aren’t I” Changkyun said, placing his hands up to his face and dramatically fluttering his eyelashes.

Nara did her best to hide the smirk on her face behind her coffee cup as she took another sip.

“Do you ever chill?”

“No, not really.” he shrugged.

Kihyun rolled his eyes. “Sit. Eat.”

“Yes, ma’am, I-I mean mom, I-I mean........no mom sounds about right”

Shaking her head and smirking once again, Nara finally accepted the plate and thanked Kihyun, and plopped down at an empty spot across from Minhyuk and Jooheon. Minhyuk was busy trying to spoon feed Jooheon his breakfast and the latter was engrossed in some game on his phone and growing evermore annoyed with his clingy, yet well-meaning boyfriend.

“Minhyuk please, I can’t think straight when you’re this close.”

“Oh please, Heonie. Thinking straight is the last thing anyone is asking you to do. Speaking of which, did you get my note?”

“You mean the one you left taped to my forehead? Yea, I got it.”

Everyone snickered at this little exchange as Jooheon just rolled his eyes.

“Pft really Minhyuk? Subtle, really subtle.” Hyungwon snorted.

“I am the master of subtlety, okay?” 

“Oh please, you’re practically bioluminescent.” 

No one could bicker better than Hyungwon and Kihyun which is why they were appropriately dubbed Tom & Jerry. But Minhyuk and Hyungwon were a close second. Hyungwon was always the first one to pick on Minhyuk and the open manner in which he chose to show his love for Jooheon. Part of Nara believed it was due to his own inability to accept his feelings for Changkyun and in turn he took that frustration out on Minhyuk for being so openly in love and happy.

Nara had confronted Hyungwon about his seemingly suppressed feelings a while back but was met with more resistance and denial.

[2 Weeks Earlier]

“Are you ever going to tell him?” 

Nara was sitting next to Hyungwon who was supposed to be watching the movie he picked out but was instead staring intently at a sleeping Changkyun.

Everyone else had either dozed off already or was out for the evening so Nara felt herself asking again when her first attempt was met with silence.

She nudged him, “Hyungwon?”

“Huh? What?” he asked coming out of his own thoughts.

“Are you ever going to tell Changkyun that you love him?”

“Pft, w-what?” 

He swallowed nervously not making eye contact with her. 

“I…I mean I-I’m I d-don’t. I mean w-what?”

“Its okay, I won’t tell anyone,” she reassured him. “But you should tell him.”

“Hah, yea that’s not going to happen,” he laughed half-heartedly. “And neither is this” he said gesturing between the two of them. “This little heart to heart or whatever just happened between us won’t happen again either. I have a reputation to maintain.”

“Oh yes of course. I wouldn’t dare jeopardize your reputation.” Nara quipped sarcastically, standing from her spot on the couch and ruffled Hyungwon’s hair much to his disdain. 

“Night, Wonnie.”

[Present Day]

Back in the present, Minhyuk easily blew off Hyungwon’s snarky remarks and was quickly back to pestering his boyfriend about his note.

“So babe, what do you think?”

“About what?”

“About my noooooooote!”

“No Minhyuk, I don’t want to.”

“Pleeeeeease? It’s just a pasta dinner. I just want to go on a date with you. Please it will be romantic.”

“For the last time Minhyuk, if it was just dinner I wouldn’t care, but I’ve told you over and over again that sharing a piece of spaghetti like two stray dogs isn’t romantic and I won’t do it.”

“You never let me have anything!”

“Why? Why do you want this so bad?”

“Because I’m here, I’m queer, and I want pasta so give it to me!”

A chorus of laughter broke out among the eight of them. One laugh stood out louder and unfamiliar from the rest. They all turned their heads to see Hoseok doubled over the counter and laughing to his heart’s content.

They were all shocked. They couldn’t recall the last time they had seen Hoseok laugh, like genuinely and wholeheartedly laugh. Some weren’t sure they ever had. And here he was laughing unabashedly, tears breaking at the creases of his eyes. The sound and sight was undeniably beautiful and they all soaked it up before breaking into another mess of giggles and smiles along with him.

Hyunwoo circled his arm around Nara as she watched her favorite people laughing and being momentarily carefree. He said he couldn’t remember a time in recent years that he’s heard his best friend laugh that way.

“It’s because of you, you know.” 

“He hasn’t laughed like this since you left.”

He squeezed Nara’s shoulder and quietly made his way to the stove for a second helping of the breakfast Kihyun had made them, leaving Nara alone with her thoughts.

Thinking of what Hyunwoo said and seeing the smiling faces of the boys around her, she couldn’t help but think that in that exact moment, despite all the danger, and trials to come, she swore she wouldn’t mind staying this way, in this place, with these boys forever.

Nara and Hoseok had just finished another grueling training session, and were currently sitting across from each other on the mat, each chugging a bottle of water, breaths beginning to even out. Hoseok was the first to break the silence.

“I’m sorry I hurt you. I never wanted to hurt you.”

Nara was taken aback. She wasn’t sure where this sudden confession was coming from. She looked into Hoseok’s eyes full of sincerity and fought the urge to waiver from her hurt and just forgive him already.

“So why did you?” 

She took another sip from her bottle and averted her eyes from the overwhelming emotion in his.

“It’s complicated. But it was what was best for you.”

She huffed. ‘Not this again’, she thought, standing from her spot. 

“Right, this again. If you aren’t going to be honest with me Hoseok, then shove your apologies up your ass!”

Hoseok scrambled to his feet. 

“Wait! Nara you don’t understand.” 

She had already turned her back and was heading toward the door.

“Of course I don’t understand!” - she turned to him abruptly - “because you never tell me anything, never explain anything.”

“Nara, please.”

“Save it, Hoseok. Unless you’re going to tell me why you ended it all those years ago, the real reason, then just save it.”

His next words were hushed as his head hung low, but not low enough for Nara to miss the tears fall from his eyes. 

“It never would have worked. I-i have darkness inside of me. I eventually bring down everyone I love. I didn’t want to do that to you.”

“Please, Hoseok” - she stepped closer to him - “we all have darkness and demons, but maybe if you had given us a chance, our demons could have been friends. I don’t know why you think you have to hide yourself from me.”

“You were going to give up your future for me. I couldn’t let that happen. Saving you from myself was the best thing I knew to do for you. No matter how much it killed me to do it.”

“That would have been my decision, not yours, mine.”

“You should have run from me the moment we met, but you didn’t and I wasn’t strong enough to resist my feelings for you, I’m sorry. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish that I was someone different, someone better, and that we had met some other way. Then maybe it could have worked.”

Nara’s heart broke again, this time for Hoseok. How could he not see how amazing he was. He had a past, yes, but hell who didn’t? He was a good person, the best person she knew other than her father. It shattered her to see the turmoil in his eyes and realize that he only believed the worst about himself. All she wanted was to show him exactly how she saw him.

“For fucks sake, Hoseok stop talking about yourself like that. It’s not true.”

“What difference does it make? It is what it is and I’m not telling you any of this to make you care about me, but - -”

“But I do care. I fucking love you, Hoseok. Every part of me loves you, can’t you see that?”

He stumbled.

“Y-you still love me?” 

He had never expected to hear those words from her again. He couldn’t believe it. After everything he had done to her, she still loved him?

“Of course I do.” 

She closed the distance between them. She pressed a hand to his cheek mirroring the night they broke up and Hoseok instinctively leaned into her touch like not a day had passed. 

“I never stopped.”

It wasn’t clear who made the first move, but in an instant, their lips were sealed to each others in a frantic kiss. The conversation wasn’t over, but at the moment neither of them could find the right words to express the rush of emotion surging through them, and instead they let their bodies speak for them.

They communicated through kisses and flushed skin, tight embraces, and passionate sighs. There would be time to talk about everything again after, but right now they both needed this, needed the wordless conversation happening between their bodies and the sweet release of years worth of unspoken feelings and pain.

“I’m going to miss you so much,” Sue cooed as she tightly hugged Hoseok. He couldn’t help but hug his owner, his best friend was leaving for four months. That was four months of adventures and experiences he wasn’t able to join in on. Usually they went wherever they could together. “You be good for her now, you hear me?”

That made you smile. Hoseok was always good for you. Maybe it was because you tended to spoil him with trips to Munchies, your secret extravagance that you spent on Hoseok. It had been your favorite spot for years and typically you didn’t bring anyone with you. You were only the slightest bit selfish and wanted to keep the family owned ice cream shop to yourself. Hoseok on the other hand, was the exception to your rule. One look from those puppy brown eyes of his and you were dragging him to the car, or walking if it was nice out, to the ice cream shop.

“Be careful over there,” Hoseok warned Sue, completely disregarding the last thing she said. “I’m not going to be there to protect you.”

Sue leaned back, her brown eyes watering up as she ruffled Hoseok’s hair and gave his ears one last rub. “I know sweetie. I promise to be careful.”

“Don’t go out by yourself, always go out with friends if you have too.” He added.

“I promise.”

Hoseok gave Sue a weary look and then glanced down at her duffle bag, as if he was wondering if it was too late to squeeze into the large purple bag before she boarded the plane. Airport Security didn’t need to know that he was in there. He can be quiet.

Stepping forward, you rested your hand on Hoseok’s back. He emitted a whine and buried his head in the crook of Sue’s neck, an attempt to scent her for one last time. He usually wasn’t so overboard with the scenting, especially since when Colin saw him do it for the first time he almost broke up with Sue. Colin was really clueless about hybrids. But she was leaving him for the first time and he was going to miss her. It didn’t help that animal side of him wanted to make sure that other hybrids knew that she already had a hybrid of her own.

You glanced at Colin to see him sitting on one of the chairs scrolling through his phone. Such a sweet boyfriend, you thought to yourself. But you didn’t think about him much longer when Sue pulled you in for your hug.

“You are truly the bestest friend I could ever have,” Sue gushed, almost crushing your bones as she hugged you. Hoseok let out a gasp as his title of best friend got ripped right from him, but you simply squeezed Sue just as hard. The two of you had known each other since high school. She was in fact the only person that you kept in touch with after graduation and started up with college. Yes, the two of you attended the same college, but that didn’t mean you constantly saw each other. She was a Business major and you were an English major. Two completely different worlds in college. But you made it work.

“We’re going to miss you so much,” you squeaked out. She loosened her grip just enough for you to suck in a mouthful of fresh air.

“I’ll send you postcards every other week.” Sue promised, “And I’ll post all my pictures onto Facebook so you guys can see it.”

“You better, or we’ll hop on a plane and hunt you down if you don’t.” She laughed at your harmless threat, and you heard Hoseok’s familiar chuckle too.

Overhead, a woman’s voice announcing the twelve a ‘clock flight to Hong Kong was now boarding. You relaxed your arms this time and pulled back. Sue wiped away the loose tear stragglers, bending down to pick up her duffle bag. Only Hoseok had grabbed it for her before she could and set the strap on her shoulder.

“Always a sweetheart,” she praised Hoseok, hugging him one last time.

Colin appeared next to you, probably realizing that if he didn’t hug his girlfriend one last time before she departed wouldn’t be good for him. “I’ll miss you baby,” he said, pulling her into his arms, completely ignoring the fact that she had been hugging Hoseok.

Hobi stared at Sue, his own arms wrapping around himself as he tried to pretend that didn’t bother him. You glared daggers into Colin’s head, moving closer to Hoseok to hug him. His arms instantly wrapped around you, one across your chest and the other around your shoulders so he could have you as close as possible.

After being cuddly with Colin, Sue finally stepped away, adjusting the strap of her bag one last time and double checking that she had her passport and ticket in hand. Which she did by the way. With a final wave, and a promise to send them all texts when she landed, you turned with Hoseok to watch Sue get in line to board the plane.

It all took a matter of five minutes.

“Can we stay?” Hoseok softly asked you. “Just until her plane leaves?”

You nodded in agreement, resting your head on his shoulder. “We can sit by the windows too if you want. That way we can watch the airplane take off.”

Hoseok lifted his head to look at Colin. “We’re going to sit by the windows and watch the plane take off. Do you wanna join us?” You could hear the hope in his voice as he waited. Colin and Hoseok may not have much in common, but they both loved Sue. Colin just couldn’t seem to grasp the fact that Hoseok wasn’t in love with her.

“I gotta get going. I have work.” Colin answered instead. He barely glanced at Hoseok as he gave you nod, turning on his heel and walking towards the entrance of the airport. You felt the vibrations of his whimpers before you heard them. Without even looking you knew his tail and ears were down once again.

“Come on sweetie,” you coaxed, encouraging him to follow you as you walked towards the window. “Let’s go watch the plane take off.”

He silently followed, settling in a seat and turning so he was completely facing the window. It wasn’t bad enough that today was already hard with Sue leaving, but Colin had to add salt into the wound. Hoseok was one of the sweetest people you knew. It hurt to see him holding in his own pain, especially when it was coming from Colin.

Settling in behind him, you rubbed his back as you watched the plane too. “Does Sue know that Colin’s not even trying?” You asked. Maybe if she found out how bad it was, how Colin didn’t even pretend to be nice or try to control his jealousy, she’d do something about it.

“I told her in the beginning. She said she’d talk to him, and it seemed to work.” Hoseok shook his head as he ran his palm against his tail. “It didn’t last and she loves him, so she doesn’t see it.”

You pressed your lips together, running a hand through your shoulder length hair. “He doesn’t…hit you, does he?” You knew it was extremely bold to ask, but if he was being abused by Colin, the laws would now protect him. He had his rights.

But he quickly shook his head. “No. Sue wouldn’t stand for that. Besides…” he turned halfway so he could look at you. To your surprise, there was a small smile on his face. “…if he was, I would have told you. Out of everyone, besides Sue, you’re the one I’m closest with and trust the most.”

That made your heart melt. You sometimes wondered if he had a specialty in making your heart melt, he was just too damn good at it. “You totally want an extra scoop of ice cream, don’t you?”

His smile widened and he wrapped his arm around your shoulders to hug you close. “And rainbow sprinkles?”

You giggled while scooting closer, nodding. “And rainbow sprinkles.” Hoseok pressed his face into your hair, not bothering to hide the fact that he was sniffing your scent, making you laugh again.

“I mean it though,” he murmured. “Out of everyone, you’re my go to person Strawberry.”

A smile graced your lips, but you said nothing, simply enjoying his hug. He readjusted himself so he could still hug you as the two of you watched the window, forgetting about Colin for the time being, as you waited for your friend’s plane to take off.

Evangeline POV

I’m surrounded by silence. I can sense no metal in the wood-panelled room I was put in, and its luxury is pure derision. Silence Stone lines the walls, as subtle as in Maven’s rooms in Whitefire, but numbing still. Maybe it was created exactly to incarcerate magnetrons too exalted to throw into dungeons, perhaps he had this done himself. It’s late for me to wonder about this, given I must’ve been here for days. But the silence of abilities is nothing compared to the void within myself. I’ve been hiding for too long, even before I knew, but most of the time, I wasn’t bothered. I was too tired to move and I still am. Tired is hardly the right word, it can’t possibly encompass how I feel. Sore, exhausted, depressed, shocked, hurt, grieving. I know the last one should be the most accurate, but it doesn’t seem right to me either. It requires me to admit the pain I’m drowning in. It demands to accept that Tolly is dead.

And this is the only battle I’m fighting now.

Even when she is my cell. The rebel general stands at the door and if I looked up, I’d stare into her cold and hard eyes. I don’t do it, denying her that acknowledgement of her presence. At the same time, I’m ashamed for it. Ignoring her has no honour, sparing your enemy is undignified, a weakness. But in truth, I’ve been weak. Since I learned of my brother’s demise, I’ve needed all my strength to maintain my resolve and keep myself from shattering into pieces. I know Father would call my behaviour a disgrace all the same.

“Are you satisfied now?” I say, my voice raspy after days without use and held-back sobs. I find Farley’s eyes, meeting mine without a reaction. “You won’t get back your lover from killing my brother,” I add, hissing. As much as she tries to make herself an enigma, rumours follow in her wake. I’ve focused on Mare Barrow’s revenge for her own brother, but the Red woman in front of me had as much motivation and acted on it. Tiberias let the information slip, and I realized not Barrow, but General Farley had to be the killer. She took Tolly’s life and now dares to show her face to me, denying nothing.

After lying to me about him for months. I’ve trusted the delusional Scarlet Guard enough to stay with them after the falling-out between my mother and Queen Anabel, and this is my reward: Tolly was murdered by General Farley before I’ve even I left Pitarus and nobody told me about his death – so I might remain cooperative and useful to them.

I should kill her for that. But she appears hardly afraid of me, her icy glare a threat on its own.

“Of course I don’t think that, princess,” she says finally. “That would be stupid. Revenge is useless.”

Like I want to prove the opposite, I jump up, rushing forward, and a headache rises with my attack, caused by my own weariness and the Silent Stone. I stumble and she cackles. “Indeed, you Silvers never learn, never show restraint,” she mocks.

“What?!” I hiss, still struggling for balance but stepping toward her.

“You don’t even notice.” She shakes her head. “You don’t want to know why a Red acts, you just attack and punish when something doesn’t go your way. How presumptive.”

“‘Not my way’? You call murdering my brother in cold blood, 'things not going my way’?!”

Odium replaces the callousness she’s shown me before. She’s eerily calm in contrast to my turmoil. “He killed people too, and didn’t feel anything while doing it. Didn’t care,” she says. “Don’t pretend otherwise, princess, I’ve seen him do it, several times.” She closes her eyes like in the smallest indication of weariness.

“Ptolemus Samos was an acting Silver general and king-to-be and thus a knowing player in a dangerous game. He was an obstacle who would never have cooperated with our cause, so Command decided to assassinate him before he harmed more of his Red 'citizens’.”

I tremble. My sight blurs. But I close the gap between us, approaching her until only half a meter separates us. “Then you are fools,” I utter equally calm and detached. “Now you’ve lost any ally you might’ve found in me, along with everyone else of my house.”

She scoffs but replies nothing. I cackle. “And you keep me prisoner as well! How are you better than Maven again?”

This provokes a gleaming in her eyes, a shift in her stance. “Maybe you’re right, princess,” she concedes. “Might’ve been a grave mistake, just like coming to your cell.” Her glare feels like a challenge, an invitation to turn my cell into her trap, and the prospect of a fight allows me to forget for a moment. I let my battle instincts take over and reach for her face. I want to leave another scar on her face, see her red blood.

My nails cut her, she wavers from my slap, but doesn’t lose her balance as I intended. Instead she stumbles aside and grabs my hand, then twists it against my back to fixate me. Not only startled by her counter attack, the Silent Stone makes me dizzy again, so I almost feel nauseous.

“So, princess,” the general snaps, “you think you alone are suffering, the only one entitled to avenge?” Her grip tightens, her voice becoming louder with each word. “Even if you scared me, you wouldn’t be my sole enemy. I’m surrounded by them. I’ve killed before, and this war will force me to kill again, so retribution might await at any turn. I can’t allow myself to be afraid. But if you try to murder me now, I’ll fight you till my last breath, and my comrades would execute you still, deciding you’re really not worth it.”

Suddenly, she releases me and pushes me away. I fall to the ground but scramble up again immediately. “That won’t matter if I -”

She rushes toward me, towers over me. Blood runs down her chin. I notice her gait is a little uneven, a possible weakness to exploit. “As. I. Said,” she begins, “you Silvers think the world owes you something and thus you abuse Reds, children, everyone, with no remorse, expecting them to grovel in fear. But I won’t have it, not even from you. I will end this.”

“Big words,” I retort.

She steps back and I rise. It’s another duel of glares, but she’s the one to give up first, tilting her head.

“Now, princess, what do you want?”

My resolve shatters, my tautness with it. “Excuse me?”

She doesn’t explain and turns away slightly, like another invitation to attack. I don’t fall for it this time. But a feint isn’t her plan. “I’ve had dreams and wishes too, but they were destroyed again and again. Now … I can only hope it’ll be over soon. Once.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I should assault her again, her threat of punishment be damned. Her words have to be an awful attempt of an excuse, one I shouldn’t care about. I don’t. Yet she’s stung me, hitting a part of me buried deep down which is revealed by grief and raw from it.

What do I want?

Elane is my first thought, before I correct myself. Of course I want Tolly back. I wish the lie I’ve lived for months was true, that he came to defend Pitarus with Mother and Elane. I want to ask Mother why she killed Queen Anabel. Really for my sake? I think I want all that happened after the day Anabel came to announce the renewed engagement to Tiberias to be unreal. I wish that Father wasn’t a prisoner in the Lakelands, that he ruled the Rift, in peace, while I –

“You have no answer, princess?” The general pulls me out of my contemplations. I don’t want to let go of those dreams, and thus I stay quiet. She isn’t worth it.

The general turns to leave. Good. Maybe I’ll be fitter, and ready, the next time I see her, so I can finish her off. But she doesn’t do me the favour and hesitates to use her key.

“I acted on orders,” she says, “yet it was still my choice. My guilt.”

The lock buzzes. “Wait,” I utter.

“Hmm?”

“Tell me how he died.”

“You don’t want to know.”

“I do.”

She tsks, moves from the door, but doesn’t come as close to me as before. I see her from the corners of my eyes and wait some seconds to turn to her and meet her gaze.

“I came to his base offering information, and he assumed I was his to command,” she begins. “The next day, I waited for him in a shady corner, having removed all the metals I could find while carrying a special weapon myself. I attacked before he could so much as greet me. I evaded his counter and placed the diamondglass dagger in his stomach.” She pauses. “Then I slit his throat.”

I take a breath. And another. It doesn’t help; I shouldn’t have asked, as she said. I charge, kick against her leg and tackle her. This time, she falls. I sit down astride her, my arm pressed against her neck. It’ll take some minutes, but I can end her this way.

She doesn’t let me, of course. She fights and wriggles, loosening my hold and freeing her hand which she uses for a punch against my temple. It forces me off her.

My head rings. Farley’s up and at the door again and I have to cackle despite my headache. I’ve made her afraid after all, notwithstanding her blatant self-confidence.

“You should let me go!” I shout. “I’ll never help you, and –”

“You’re right.” 

In the dead of night, the door opens. A bag is thrown at me. “Go if you want to,” she says. I hesitate. Is it really the general? Her words from our last encounter were hardly a promise, and I’ve learned enough intrigue to smell the danger in forged escape attempts.

“Has your bravado left you now, princess?”

No, it is her. I get up. “You could just be trying pin sabotaging acts on me,” I say. “So you can still have me killed with your hands clean.”

She shakes her head ever-so-slightly. I can see Mare behind her, a backup and a threat. “Haven’t you paid attention?” Farley preens. “I don’t care about keeping my hands clean. Go on and leave, no one who cares about you knows you’re here. No one will know you’re gone. There’d be no point in staging a coup from your side.”

I glare, finding an equal in her gaze. “I’ll forget I’ve ever trusted you,” I say. “You shouldn’t trust me, either. One day, I might come for you.”

The corners of her mouth twitch, stretching her scarred skin and the ragged, swollen cut I caused. It is a vicious expression, I cannot call it a smile. Mare is even more tense. “I expect you to do this the moment I turn my back to you,” Farley says.

Right now. But you’ll die in that case, she doesn’t add. I know that already. And for a moment, I don’t even care about my own fate. She notices this, too. Yet she doesn’t move a fraction.

Maybe I wouldn’t even succeed.

Maybe I’ll be as dead as Tolly.

I grab the bag tighter. “It has warm clothing, a bedroll, a few bottles, and some food,” she says. “Stuff you need on the road.”

I shove myself out of her sight, rush along the corridor, exit the first door I see. A night of black, grey and white greets me. Snow covers the streets, flakes falls onto my face. I lift the hood of my jacket, pull it tight, and take the first crunching step into the snow. The icy wind hisses like Father’s taunts and Mother’s snakes, and I welcome it as punishment for my coward instinct to protect my own, pointless life. I should’ve tried anyway. Soon, my tracks are buried again, the cold whiteness restored without a blemish. 

A/N: In the first version of this, written four months ago, they were on a train. As the story progressed, I had to change that and that’s why I added Silent Stone although I think that makes Eve’s situation too similar to Mare’s and I don’t really like that. I hope you’ll forgive me that.

Monday Feb 22 Bubbles text me first thing that morning. She wanted to see if I was available Wednesday afternoon. I like that about Bubbles. She has no problem being seeing out with me. No place is off limits. The restaurant I picked is one I’d tried to take Firecracker, but she had respectfully declined. She’s scared who’d see her. “I know a lot of people and it could hurt my reputation,” or some bullshit like that she had said. We’ve been together almost 7 months now and it’s still a problem.

Not Bubbles though. She was down for whatever. If things worked out, I would reward her for it. But not yet. It was still too early. We’ve only been at this barely a month. I’d give it another month and then see where we were. I plan on keeping FC. She depends on my allowance to pay her rent and other miscellaneous bills so I can’t just cut her off. I do still care for her. But there will be no more Louis bags and shoes and definitely no more Celine bags. I had tried to get her out of town but I wasn’t really interested any more in taking her. But she said it was nothing. Blamed it all on her period. We said our goodbyes. She made it to her car before I did mine. She backed out and peeled off. Suddenly she was on a mission. I was really confused now.

That night I hooked up with some of the recently laid off co-workers. One of them was the Oracle. She said she would get there early if I wanted to go ahead and come. So I took the opportunity. I needed to run this Firecracker stuff by her.

We ended up meeting at the same place I’d taken Bubbles on our first date. Crazy. Me and the Oracle were the only ones there. After a brief catchup I asked her about FC. Told her the whole story about missing our dates and including her crying in the room.

The Oracle was like, “Three things likely happened. Her boyfriend managed to get back in with her and hurt her. Or she met some new dude that hurt her feelings or, it really was her period. I mean I been cranky and tearful before when I was on my period. Not wanting to leave the house. Just sitting around crying. Or, it could be a combination of 2 of the three. My gut tells me she’s having some man problems.”

I raised my margarita glass. The Oracle raised hers. We clicked them and I said, “I got to talk to you more often.” She smiled. “Yes you do! But I wouldn’t worry about her. Sounds like you got her mind right. Got her feeling good about herself. That’s what you’re there for big Daddy.” We both chuckled.

Saturday Feb 27th Bubbles text and cancelled our date for that afternoon. It was cool. I was still a little hung over from the night before. And after working all last weekend I just wanted to lie around the house and do nothing. By this point I was used to being cancelled on.

I ended up sleeping all day. My wife came home that afternoon and got in the bed with me and went to sleep as well. I don’t think I’ve laid around the house all day in almost a year. Felt good. Then  I got a weird text. It ended up being one of my other co-workers. My plug! My Cohibas had come in. He sent a pic too

20 Fantasy Hockey Thoughts

Every Sunday until the start of the 2018-19 regular season, we'll share 20 Fantasy Thoughts from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's "Daily Ramblings".

  1. Johnny Gaudreau leads all wingers in primary assists over the last two seasons but note that Alex Radulov isn’t very far behind. On a team with Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, and John Klingberg, I think the fact that Radulov had 72 points last year gets a little overlooked. The additional ice time he received in Dallas compared to his season in Montreal helped boost his numbers across the board, even though his actual shot attempt rate per 60 minutes declined slightly.

Unless there’s some sort of trade for Erik Karlsson, it looks like the Dallas lineup last year will largely be the same this year. They brought back Valeri Nichushkin but he won’t be a big threat to Radulov’s ice time. It does seem possible that Nichushkin grabs the top-line slotting with Seguin and Benn but unless he shows more consistency than his last season with the Stars, it won’t be a long-term solution. I like Nichushkin’s skills a lot but he’s probably better suited to play more sheltered minutes on the second or third line. (july24)

  2. I’m not really a guy that targets prospects in one-year fantasy drafts. The list of guys I’ve targeted over the years in their age-18 season can probably be counted on one hand. On the other hand…I’m finding it really hard not to get enamoured with Andrei Svechnikov.

I know, breaking news. Svechnikov is good. The thing is, it’s not really that hard to envision him with a top-nine slotting and top power-play minutes this year. My one concern would be that they stick Victor Rask on the top PP unit as they did at times last year. But if Svechnikov shows in camp to the level he’s capable and starts impressing with that shot of his, I find it hard to believe any coach would not give him the power-play minutes for him to succeed, even if it’s a month or so into the season.

Maybe this is all wishful thinking. Maybe he’ll bounce around the lineup and they limit his exposure in his first year. Or, maybe they let him play his game, give him 15 minutes a night, and he puts up a 25-goal season. Someone talk me off the ledge for this year, please. (july28)

  3. It could be tough sledding for Florida prospects for a while. Looking up how many years Evgenii Dadonov has left on his deal, I realized the following: Aleksander Barkov, Vincent Trocheck, Jonathan Huberdeau, Mike Hoffman, Dadonov, and Nick Bjugstad all have at least two years left on all their contracts. Jared McCann has two years on the deal he signed. Presumably, if all goes well, left/right wing on the third line are the only spots up for grabs that could have fantasy relevance.

I was just thinking of Henrik Borgstrom, Aleksi Heponiemi, and Owen Tippett. They are certainly talented enough where they could earn a roster spot but in the short-term, nothing is a given. They will get there eventually, but it could be a couple years before they have any real fantasy impact. (july28)

  4. We knew that Rick Nash would probably be a rental player for the Bruins, but do you think maybe the Bruins might want to have Ryan Spooner back? After joining the Rangers, Spooner was sizzling with 16 points in just 20 games. Add that up with his numbers in Boston and it resulted in 41 points (13g-28a) in 59 games, an average of 0.69 points per game. That placed him in line with the likes of Alex Pietrangelo, Evander Kane, Corey Perry, David Krejci, Bo Horvat, and Nazem Kadri.

That group above is where you could feel comfortable drafting Spooner in points-only leagues, but remember that in multicategory leagues, Spooner’s point totals are fairly assist-heavy, as he has never scored more than 13 goals in a season. Spooner’s non-scoring peripherals in particular are also very light. He had to receive Lady Byng consideration from someone, as he took just two minor penalties in all of 2017-18 and only took 24 hits in 2016-17. In spite of the scoring breakout with the Rangers, just two of his 16 points were on the man advantage, and his power-play time actually decreased with the Rangers.

One side note: Spooner is an RFA who remains unsigned and is scheduled for an August 4 arbitration hearing. According to Blueshirt Banter, the deal isn’t expected to be long-term, since the Rangers are on a rebuild and could move Spooner. But assuming he sticks with the Rangers for a full season, you could expect him to hold something like a second-line role with around 50 points. And remember that he’s better in pure points leagues than multicategory leagues. (july29)

  5. Quinn Hughes won’t suit up for the Canucks in 2018-19, deciding to return to the University of Michigan instead. Although a tiny part of me would love to see him in a Canucks’ uniform this coming season, this is logically and completely the right move for both Hughes and the Canucks in the long run.

Bringing a teenager into the NHL can be risky. That risk is elevated when the player happens to be a defenseman, and the team happens to be a rebuilding one like the Canucks. Hughes was no guarantee to make the Canucks out of training camp, as the team already has eight defensemen under contract. Hughes will be in a much better position to make the squad in 2019-20, as both Alex Edler and Michael Del Zotto will be UFAs, and Chris Tanev could be traded by then. Ben Hutton and Derrick Pouliot will also be RFAs and the Canucks could easily decide to move on from either if they do not take a step forward this coming season. (july29)

  6. Jake Gardiner can get you seven or eight goals and a pile of assists. That’ll play very well in points-only formats. But in leagues that count peripheral stats, he won’t give as much as people may think. Just for an example: in my points league that counts peripheral stats, he was just inside the top-40 defensemen in value. And that’s with a 50-plus point season. When looking through keeper defensemen, if you’re in a multi-category league, Gardiner can probably be left to the side, depending on league depth. (july28)

  7. Though I’m not sure there will be much fantasy relevance, I’m a little surprised no team has signed Tobias Enstrom yet. His 50-point seasons are a thing of the distant past, but he’s still a pretty good defender, and a lot of teams can use a good left-handed defensive blueliner. A real defensive defenseman, not a face-punching defensive defenseman. Maybe he will return to Sweden after all, as had been reported earlier this summer. It’s hard to imagine an NHL team couldn’t use what he brings, and likely for very cheap. (july28)

  8. Conor Sheary has a vastly different floor and ceiling fantasy-wise. Dobber said it best in his Fantasy Take on the Sheary trade to Buffalo: “You won’t see Sheary get between 30 and 55 points if he plays 80 games – he’ll either click and top 55, or he’ll sputter and fall short of 30.”

So, just know that if you invest in Sheary that you’ll either hit a home run or you’ll strike out. No middle ground. But, sometimes taking risks on these kinds of players are what you’ll need to win your fantasy league.

Sheary will have the opportunity to line up alongside up-and-coming Jack Eichel this season. But his most frequent center in Pittsburgh was no slouch either – his name is Sidney Crosby. In fact, nearly half of both his even-strength minutes and his even-strength points were on Crosby’s line.

Personally, I think there is significant risk in reaching for Sheary. Sure, there was the ‘breakout’ 53-point season. But he struggled in the playoffs after that, scoring just seven points in 22 games and getting healthy scratched. If you’re curious about 2017-18’s playoffs, Sheary recorded just two assists in 12 games. So, he’s really been in a funk for over a season. A new opportunity with a new team could be exactly what the doctor ordered. But since I’m more of a ‘believe it when I see it’ type, I’ll admit that I’m more bearish on Sheary than bullish. (july29)

  9. Something I’ve just been thinking about for this year is Jeff Carter’s value. He lost two-thirds of his 2017-18 due to injury but still managed 13 goals and 22 points in 27 games. That’s pretty good.

My big issue is that he’s going into his age-34 season. The list of centers with 25-goal, 30-assist seasons at that age or older over the last five seasons is as follows: Pavel Datysuk (2014-15). That’s it. That’s the whole list. In fact, Datsyuk is the only center in the last decade to have a season with at least 25 goals and 30 assists at the age of 34 or older. We know of aging curves in hockey. We know that shots and shooting percentage fall off in the late 20s and get worse.

Carter is a shooter. He’ll still get 17-18 minutes a night centering the second line and on the top power-play unit. With Ilya Kovalchuk in town, do some of his shots on the PP disappear? This will largely be a question of average draft position (ADP). He was often drafted inside the top-75 last year. Even if he’s still just inside the top-100, it might be worth passing on him. Once I finish my projections, I’ll have a better idea of where to grab him. This might be a situation where I’d rather be a year early jumping off the boat than a year late. (july27)

  10. The Flames re-signed Mark Jankowski for two years with an AAV of $1.675-million. Jankowski’s first full year was 2017-18, a year with 17 goals and 25 points.

I personally had hopes that Jankowski and Sam Bennett could form two-thirds of a solid third line in 2018-19 – they performed well with Garnet Hathaway last year – but the addition of Elias Lindholm could throw a wrench in these plans. If James Neal slides on the top line, and the second line is left as it has been for a couple years, Lindholm seems the logical choice for the third-line center position, pushing Jankowski to the fourth line. It’s good news for Calgary’s depth but bad news for Jankowski’s flickering fantasy value.

There has been talk from the team that Lindholm will go to the top line, Neal to the second line, and that would possibly put Michael Frolik on the third line with Jankowski and Bennett. With the addition of Derek Ryan, this might make some sense. We’ll have to see what Calgary decides to do. For now, Jankowski is still waiver fodder in most leagues.

  11. Last year was Brandon Montour’s first full season and he didn’t disappoint with 32 points in 80 games. The moves Anaheim made on the blue line, namely trading Sami Vatanen and letting Shea Theodore go in the expansion draft, opened some ice time for Montour and he responded with a productive season.

It’s hard to see a lot of progression here fantasy-wise, though. It looks like he’ll be playing behind Josh Manson for the foreseeable future at even strength and will be the second option after Cam Fowler for the top PP unit. Expecting more than 19-20 minutes combined between EV and PP time is a bridge too far barring an injury (which did happen to Fowler last year). For most leagues, Montour is a guy who is at best a bench option or more likely a waiver option.

  12. I enjoyed last week’s Cage Match piece by Rick Roos, particularly his discussion of Bryan Little. I agree with Rick that 2017-18 was an aberration from Little and with no help coming in the off season down the middle, he’s back to his second-line role, likely between Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine. His PP production may not improve much, but if he can play 82 games again, he’ll improve on those 43 points. He should come a big discount in season-long leagues.

  13. With the Hurricanes acquiring Dougie Hamilton, Justin Faulk was assumed to be on the trading block. Yet here we are nearing the end of July and Faulk is still a Hurricane. So, we have to project Faulk as if that is where he will stay. Not only could Hamilton cut into Faulk’s power-play minutes by possibly bumping him to the second power-play unit, but Faulk is also fighting a downward point trend over the past three seasons. That’s not a positive sign for a player who is only 26.

Could Faulk still provide value in multicategory leagues? In spite of another down season, he still finished 12th in shots on goal among defensemen (211). With less power-play time with the arrival of the free-shooting Hamilton, that number could also decrease. He’s arguably still an option as a D5 in deeper multicategory 12-team leagues, particularly those that don’t count plus-minus (he has averaged a minus-21 per season over his past four seasons). But unlike past seasons, I won’t be making a point to draft Faulk again. (july25)

  14. Once upon a time, Henrik Zetterberg was a keeper league mainstay, but eventually Father Time catches up to everyone. Keeper leaguers tend to avoid the over-35 crowd like the plague, yet in some cases they can provide some sneaky value. Z is still that kind of player, as he has recorded at least 50 points in each of his last four full seasons. In fact, he has never posted below 0.6 PTS/GP in any season, including last season (56 points, 0.68 PTS/GP).

Don’t reach too much for Zetterberg, particularly in multicategory leagues. The point totals have been assist-heavy for quite some time. Z has not recorded a 20-goal season in six seasons, dating back to the 2011-12 season. There is also the matter of him possibly not playing because of a lingering back issue, which caused him to skip all practices during the second half of last season. Zetterberg has three years remaining on a contract that pays him just over $6 million per season, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for the Wings to LTIR his contract.

Zetterberg probably isn’t worth targeting until more is known about his situation. But if he returns and is healthy, he should again play a prominent role on the Wings, who aren’t exactly loaded with scorers. So, he could be a cheap source of 50 points if he can pull it together for another full season. (july25)

  15. A special shout out to Gustav Nyquist. I know he hasn’t really lived up to expectations since bursting on the scene with 28 goals in 57 games way back in the 2013-14 season. The PP production has been what’s holding him back, having averaged just shy of 10 PP points per season over the last three years. The 2018-19 season is the last one left on his current contract, so he could find himself with a new team once head-to-head playoffs hit in March (though he does have a no-trade, so he has control of where he goes). Unless the team moves to a heavily-used top PP unit, it’s hard to see Nyquist as more than a 20-goal, 50-point guy. Not bad for fantasyhockey but certainly capable of more. (july24)

  16. Only eight players have managed at least 20 goals in each of the last two seasons. Some of those names make sense like Vladimir Tarasenko, Connor McDavid, Evgeni Malkin, Patrik Laine, and Auston Matthews. Wingers Anders Lee and Rickard Rakell are also on the list. The final name? James van Riemsdyk.

Van Riemsdyk has been known more for his power-play prowess over the last couple years as everyone marvels over his hands around the net. That is prolific five-on-five scoring, however. Now that he’s back in Philadelphia, maybe he’ll be made a focal point of the offense where he can average somewhere in the 17- or 18-minute range per game rather than the 15:24 he has the last two years. (july24)

  17. These are the top-3 players in five-on-five goals over the last two years: Auston Matthews (55), Connor McDavid (51), and Rickard Rakell (48). That’s not a typo, only McDavid and Matthews have more five-on-five goals over the last two years than Rakell.

There is probably some quibbling to be done whether he’s just a good player skating with a Hall-of-Fame center or a great player skating with a Hall-of-Fame center, but for our purposes, it doesn’t really matter. He doesn’t seem destined to split from Ryan Getzlaf anytime soon and is locked into that top PP unit. I’m curious to see where his ADP lands because there isn’t a reason to suspect a decline coming from Rakell this year barring injury or a terrible streak of unluckiness. (july24)

  18. I went to Twitter for some Keeper Bubble Week questions. Here’s one from Barry Miles: “Who’s got a better likelihood of holding a top six spot, Anthony Beauvillier or Andreas Athanasiou?”

Athanasiou’s fancy stats indicate that he can really make an impact and put up first-line points on Detroit, perhaps even better than Gustav Nyquist. And he probably deserves that spot over Nyquist. But zero chance that happens. This is another stepping-stone year for Athanasiou. So my answer is Anthony Beauvillier. If Jan Kovar fails to make things happen in the NHL as a top-sixer, then Beauvillier will get his chance. And then, whether or not he makes that chance work is up to him. If Kovar clicks, then Beauvillier is a depth guy again. So, in that sense, Athanasiou is a safer play. I have Athanasiou for 42 points. Nice and safe. So this question becomes: do you want safe, or do you want to swing for the fences? (july23)

  19. Jacob Trouba was awarded $5.5 million in arbitration on a one-year deal. He becomes the second-highest paid defenseman on the Jets. I’d feel more bullish about him if he didn’t miss at least 17 games in four of his last five seasons. He saw the second-most ice time on the entire team last season (average per game), but was third on the totem pole behind Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers in terms of PP time. Now that he’s making more than Myers, and the Jets could lose Myers to free agency next year, I think you’ll see that flip-flop. Trouba’s PP time should get a boost. If only I could feel comfortable projecting 80 games out of the guy, I’d feel so much better about him. (july23)

  20. You may recall a few weeks ago when I discussed players who have babies and the impact that it has on their season, particularly with their second child (link on that is here). Getzlaf was a great example – his season after his second baby was terrible. Last year, Cam Talbot’s wife had twins. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on what happened to him in 2017-18 after that. Further to this, guess who had a baby on the weekend? Alex Pietrangelo. Guess who else had a baby? Alex Pietrangelo. Also, guess who had a baby on the weekend? Alex Pietrangelo. I’m not repeating myself, the guy actually welcomed triplets into the world! Congratulations to the Pietrangelo family, but let’s look at this from a fantasy hockey standpoint: If you think having three infants in the house in August, September and October will have no impact on his training schedule, then you’ve never had kids.

Look at this way – if Pietrangelo has a great season in 2018-19, then we’ll know he’s a pretty neglectful father! All kidding aside, I think even with a nanny to help, you still love your kids and you want to spend time with them especially during the first few months. It’s going to have an impact. I haven’t reviewed St. Louis for the DobberHockey Annual Fantasy Guide yet, but whatever my formula pits out for Pietrangelo, I’m rolling it back an additional five or six points (and just hope it doesn’t get any worse than that). 600cc sports bike good for a beginner? gsxr600 or zx6r?

ive never ridin a motorrcycle before and im looking at getting a gsx-r600 or zx6r. Im taking the safety course which is 10 hours of riding and 5 of classes which i realize isnt a lot. I drive stick shift cars so i get the point of shifting the bike. Ive ridin a dirtbike once and quads once but i seem to be a natural on anything with a motor so im not nervous at all about getting a racing bike starting. A lot of people say a 600 is to big for a first bike but i know people that have them and say they arent that bad as long as you dont drive it like an asshole. I plan on really taking it veryyyyy easy the first summer out and not pushing anything untill i feel extremly comfortable with it. My question is should i get this for a first bike? Im not getting a 250 dont even bother with that. Ive seen the 650's which are more begginer friendly but i just feel ill outgrow that within the first year and ill lose my money by selling it and buying a 600 instead of getting the 600 in the first place

It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage. It’s hard to believe Evgeny Kuznetsov was drafted 26th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft.

8. Praise for Brooks Orpik

Ah, there may still be room in hockey for slow defensemen who kinda suck after all. And it’s all thanks to Brooks Orpik, who was a huge albatross around the Capitals’ necks (not that anyone would say it) as recently as a month ago.

NBC made him the third star of Game 4 (he had six hits!!!!) and no shortage of media rubes have pontificated about how valuable he has been. And sure, when he’s been on the ice, the Caps have only taken about 1 in every 3 shot attempts and scoring chances at 5-on-5, but you gotta think: What about those hits?

Barry Trotz is using him as judiciuously as possible, typically less than 17 minutes a night and only in certain situations such as the PK, where not being able to skate is kinda not as big of a deal. But all these people saying, “Doesn’t this prove something about a thing I still inexplicably think about this sport?” No, not really.

The reason everyone thinks Orpik has been a horse in this series? He’s been on the ice for three goals for and only two against despite getting BADLY outshot. This is the “Oscar Klefbom sucks now!” argument but in the opposite direction. Orpik has a 110.8 PDO — seriously, that’s the actual number! — in the four games of the Cup Final so far, and yeah buddy that’s gonna make anyone look good.

But guess what: Brooks Orpik stunk a month ago and stinks now and will only get worse next year. He hasn’t unlocked anything in his game, he just hasn’t been on the ice for many goals against. That’s not the same thing! You know this!

7. Becoming a brain genius

Gerard Gallant, back against the wall, is starting to make the kinds of dumbass decisions that he seemingly could never have made in his run to a surefire Jack Adams.

Some are due to circumstance — you only have so many defensemen so maybe giving Deryk Engelland of all the blue liners on the roster 22 minutes a night can in some way feel justifiable even if it truly is not — but others are due to having no answers. There are two worth highlighting here.

First, the continued use of Ryan Reaves in high-leverage situations is beyond baffling. I think I said the other day it’s not the reason the team is suddenly failing, but Gallant is now both using Reaves as his extra attacker, and as the guy who got bumped up to the second line when things “needed” to be shaken up in Game 4.

I cannot stress this enough: Ryan Reaves is not only not a difference-maker, but he is actively bad and harmful to the team. In a word, he sucks. I guess he’ll try to punch Tom Wilson in the face but in doing so he’ll also create a 4-on-4 situation where Vegas’s lack of high-end skill beyond their top group will only be more apparent. I don’t understand it at all, but I guess he scored goals in back-to-back games a week ago so we’re just going to pretend he’s got that in him forever. Fun fact: The last time Reaves scored in back-to-back games before Game 5 of the WCF and Game 1 of the Cup Final was January 2015. Before that it was in January 2011.

To continue to expect offense from him is a fool’s errand.

Meanwhile, when Gallant knew he needed more offense, he didn’t scratch Reaves or, I don’t know, Cody Eakin (3-1-4 in 19 playoff games). He scratched David Perron, who had 66 points this season.

Like, this is a parody of what a dumb coach would do. And no one is calling him on it but me! What goes on out there?

6. The Senators’ week

First their AGM gets arrested — and pleads not guilty — on some pretty gross charges that potentially throws his interactions with all the Senators’ prospects he’s dealt with over the course of his job into a troubling light.

Then Health Canada recalls “thousands” of Senators onesies because they posed a choking hazard. Sometimes the jokes don’t have to be written at all.

5. Happy to be here

So the city of Las Vegas announced the other day that it would have a parade for the Golden Knights regardless of whether they won the Cup and the team was like, “Please for the love of God don’t do that to us.”

Nice for the team to have the sense to beg their way out from that kind of event, but it also highlights how fast everyone went from “THIS IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF HOCKEY AND NO ONE WILL EVER UNDERSTAND OR STOP US,” to “Ah, we were playing with house money — like the gambling thing! — the whole time.”

It’s a great bit.

4. Big Lou

The writing was kinda on the wall when it came to Garth Snow, right? You fire the guy who is maybe the reason the team has no certainty on John Tavares coming back, and hey Lou was right there and his son’s already the AGM so that all works.

But firing the coach everyone kinda seemed to like? That’s a weird one. Obviously the Islanders have long been considered a cone of silence (a great, modern reference) when it comes to understanding their inner workings so, I dunno, it’s maybe plausible that Weight and Tavares didn’t get along or something, and this is also Lou trying to get out in front of the problem.

But also, yikes! Because maybe the problem was something to do with Tavares feeling like this is a disfunctional franchise and, well, all these changes probably don’t help, right? But at least they’re getting that arena in like six years or whatever.

3. Ilya Kovalchuk

Turns out money might not be the motivating factor in bringing Ilya Kovalchuk back from the KHL. After all, he can make a boatload of cash playing over there and it’s all tax-free.

Instead, Kovalchuk apparently wants to win, which is a nice sentiment and everything, but hear me out, Ilya: Vegas has a lot of cap room and the apparent will to add more top talent this summer. Maybe that’s a thing.

I’m gonna bang the drum on this for a while. It’s the only thing that makes sense, to me.

2. Coming around

One thing that has been encouraging in the past few games has been, apart from all the hits necessitating it, people with a voice in this sport are really starting to call for a better concussion protocol. Maybe that’ll make it actually happen!

But probably not.

1. Evgeny Kuznetsov

Here’s something few people remember about Evgeny Kuznetsov: He was the 26th player selected in his draft.

And look, you can get bargains in the later rounds — Henrik Zetterberg! Patric Hornqvist! Any number of great goalies! — but the reason Kuznetsov dropped was, of course, that teams were concerned about whether he would bolt from the KHL.

I saw something this week about how George McPhee only had a handful of games with Kuznetsov on his Capitals roster before he got canned. The implication, I guess, being that the three-or-so years Kuznetsov took to come to the NHL was in some way a reason he didn’t keep his job with in Washington.

But how many guys get drafted somewhere in the first round, play three years of college or junior, then come over without the constant fretting about “WHEN IS THIS GONNA HAPPEN?” that we got with Kuznetsov?

I mean, just pick a guy totally at random, oh, I don’t know, like TJ Oshie. He was also the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft, played three years at North Dakota, then went right to the NHL at age 22.

The difference between Oshie (who was a perfectly reasonable pick at No. 24) and Kuznetsov (who was not the 26th-best player in his draft but slipped anyway) was the “fear of the Russian” factor.

Anyway, Kuznetsov suddenly looks like an ultra-mega-star on the game’s biggest stage, and he probably won’t win the Conn Smythe because Alex Ovechkin’s due, and that is kinda funny to me for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on.
