Entry 3 - Analyzing Media Representation (part B)
Dove #ShowUs
What society has shown as “beautiful” has caused a lack of confidence among women who don’t meet the general standards in media. Because of the unrealistic ideas of what it meant to be beautiful. 70% of women feel that they aren’t represented by everyday images in the media. This show’s the huge lack of diversity in women in media. It’s time for the world to understand inclusivity within the beauty community, and Dove is taking a stand for diversity and feminism.
In collaboration with Getty Images and Girl Gaze Dove is pushing beauty standards with a new campaign ‘#ShowUs’. This campaign features over 5000 stock images of diverse women around the world on different walks of life. Women of all sizes, ethnicities, and genders, are showed throughout the photo gallery. The project is 100% powered by women in front and behind the camera. Dove wants you to “be your beautiful self”, and the images are an authentic representation of self empowerment and beauty among a diverse selection of women. The campaign fights against the unrealistic beauty standards portrayed in media and uses unfiltered beauty with no digital distortion in photos. #ShowUs is set to be featured in Cosmopolitan, Elle, and O magazines to name a few. The large library of liberating imagery is available for media and advertising use to redefine the representation of women in media we see around the world to create a healthier more inclusive definition of beauty in media. 67% of women are calling for a change in diverse representation in brands, and encourage them to step up with the stock imagery used in advertising.
#ShowUsReal, #ShowUsInspirational, #ShowUsContement, #ShowUsBeauty
Below is a link for the images used in the library.

Blog Post #7 The 3 Ps Assessment: Parties, Political Interest Groups, and PACs
1a. Republicans, Democrats, Libertarian, Green and Peace and Freedom all support equal rights for women in the workplace. When reproductive services like abortion come into play, Republicans are not supportive of equal rights for women.
1b. I believe that women should have equal rights in the workplace and frankly all things outside the workplace as well. I agree with any party that supports that.
1c. In terms of women’s rights I think I agree most with the Democrat party because of the advocates I’ve seen speak about the issue. I would not consider myself a full Democrat when it comes to other aspects of the party.
2a. National Organization for Women
2b. National Organization for Women's goal has been to take action to bring about equality for all women. NOW works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society; secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for all women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in our society
2c. They are the largest feminist organization in the US, the litigation efforts of the Foundation seek to protect reproductive health options, NOW engages in voter empowerment programs designed to encourage women to register, vote, and stay politically active in their communities, launched the Love Your Body Campaign aimed at young women to promote positive body image outlooks, and NOW Foundation has been involved extensively in preparing reports about how the Social Security program can be updated to help women as caregivers as well as improve the retirement security of women with disabilities, women of color and lifetime low-income earners.
2d. NOW supports the Voting Rights Advancement Act that will afford protections to ensure that all members of our society can exercise their fundamental right to vote.
2e. NOW is located in D.C but has chapters all over the country. The CA NOW chapter has a conference in July in San Jose.
2f. Internships are available.
2g. It was founded in 1966.
3a. National Women’s Political Caucus of California
3b. NWPC CA recruits, trains and supports pro-choice women candidates who support our “bottom line issues” for elected and appointed offices at all levels of government regardless of party affiliation.
3c. The Caucus offers campaign training for candidates and campaign managers, endorses strong female congresswomen and senators, advocate for more women in office, committed to choice and publicly funded abortion, and NWPC CA supports meaningful preventive training programs for employers and workers.
3d. They are supporting Governor candidate Delaine Eastin.
3e. They are located in Tustin, CA but there is a caucus in the Silicon Valley.
3f. Internships are available.
3g. NWPC was founded in the midst of the modern American women’s movement when 320 women from 26 states met under the leadership of feminists such as Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, and Betty Friedan to form the caucus on July 11, 1971.
4. The NOW seems more organized and successful because it seems to have the largest involvement. They both target women and support women’s rights but NWPC is heavily focused on getting more women in political positions.
5a. PAC name: Emily’s List
5b. Works for larger leadership roles for pro-choice Democratic women in legislative bodies and executive seats so that families can benefit from the open-minded, productive contributions that women have consistently made in office.
5c. They have made $40,710,828, spent $35,245,689, and have $10,849,323 in cash on hand.
5d. Spent all on Democrats, none on Republicans.
5e. Some of their donors are the Kate Brown Committee, Eve Rice, and Brian Eaton (Google). I have no idea who these people are but I found a handful of donors who were unemployed but still donated a lot of money, which I thought was interesting. They must really care and believe in Emily’s List’s mission.

Want A Thriving Business? Focus On Most Talented Women In India!
In India, women are behind men because of the relative absence of economic projections and negligible engrossment of women in the process of decision making. Educational backwardness is one more main basis for the inequality amongst men and women. The involvement of women in the qualified and technical workforce is very low. This is why several organizations who care for the growth of women, considered women empowerment as a key to all these complications. The experts of economic development have considered private enterprise development by women as the best approach to empower female-folks.
The ticket of women into business and entrepreneurship is a very big jump from their preceding activities in the kitchen where they were mostly dealing with 3P’s, which were Pappad, Pickles, and Powder(masalas). Women in India entered into business because of pull and push aspects. Pull factors specify the aspects which boost-up the women to twitch an occupation or venture with a desire to do something self-sufficiently. Push factors specified those aspects which compel women to take up their own business to drift over their economic problems and responsibilities. The potential awareness of entrepreneurship and education amongst women over the years is the reason why women in the present scenario are shifting from the traditional 3Ps to the contemporary 3E’s, i.e. Energy, Engineering and Electronics. Today, women have excelled in all these fields.
Those days are gone when women used to be uncertain to commence their own business due to the fear of not being able to give enough time to their families or because of the inadequate availability of resources. In their mission to contribute to global wealth, female entrepreneurs are eliminating all the physical and mental walls that were holding women back from being the top players in today’s world.
India is also experiencing the start-up boom Like the rest of the world, all you need is an exceptional business idea and proper execution of the idea, the mandatory know-how, a sound business plan, money or investment for the start-up and the proclivity to work hard – and the implementation of one’s dreams is a possibility which we has been experienced by India’s most powerful women in business. They have reached greater heights because of their hard work and perfect execution of management and business techniques.
The global economic environment is changing rapidly around us. However, among all this, some effects never change: The capabilities that make a woman successful remain pretty much the same, and India’s most powerful women in business are proof of that. In a nation where women are still subdued and face several socio-economic challenges, the most talented women in India are examples of how willpower, creativity, and compassion can all combine and make a powerful recipe for accomplishment. India’s most powerful women in business have proved themselves to be role models in several fields. As they do so, they are intended to inspire millions of other women who are still fighting their rights across the nation to follow their path and realize their dreams. Women have the power to make a big transformation in the world and motivate others by taking the road which is less traveled. Traditionally, the Indian woman was only considered as a homemaker, there is nothing wrong with being one, the modern Indian woman today is proudly flaunting all the colors of her personality. A woman is considered as a powerhouse because she can struggle for her rights and for making her mark in politics, business, science, sports, the arts and society as a whole.

#6 Older persons’ care centre - Site visit preparation
Tumblr media
Located ten minutes from Paya Lebar MRT station, the NTUC Health nursing home Geylang East is in the heart of Geylang East in the central region of Singapore. The Geylang area was originally a large Malay settlement and is now home to the Peranakan cultural group. Peranakans are locally born residents with a mixed cultural background descended from Chinese settlers of the Malay Archipelago. While most Peranakans are of Chinese-Malay heritage, there are other communities of Peranakans, the most common being Indian Peranakans.
Tumblr media
The Geylang East nursing home run by NTUC Health, a social enterprise not for profit providing comprehensive, integrated and affordable health and elder care services, was established in 2017 and currently has a 228-bed residential capacity and a senior day centre capacity of 100. The nursing home features interior design inspired by the Peranakan cultural theme in its painted wall murals and furniture found in the transition to home rooms, rooms in which residents being rehabilitated for discharge reside in a simulated home space with small attached dining and living areas to readjust to navigating independent home life.
In running Geylang East, NTUC Health aim to provide supported multidisciplinary care that caters to the residents’ emotional, physical and cognitive health. The nursing home focuses care by the ‘3E’s’: Engage, Enrich and Empower. They provide engagement through planned activities, enrichment by providing meaning and substance to the residents’ lives, and empowerment through promoting their independence.
Tumblr media
The residential aged care is spread over four levels of the building with specific floors for male residents, female residents, a general shared floor and a floor for residents with dementia. The current ratio is eight residents to one nurse and due to shortages, many of these nurses are international nurses from countries surrounding Singapore as reported by the care coordinator of the nursing home, Ms Lim. The cultural and linguistic diversity of the staff is however beneficial to the nursing home residents as the residents are just as, if not more, culturally and linguistically diverse than the staff caring for them. While most residents do primarily speak Malay or English, many don’t and instead speak a vast majority of languages and dialects, from Tamil to Hokkien to Hakka, that require different staff to interpret and communicate with them and reflects the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Geylang area.
