Seeing Sandman posts on my feed is so confusing because for such a long time the only Dream I saw shit about was that Minecraft guy and every time I see Dream my first though is The fuck that smp guy did this time and my brain takes a fucking minute to process that it's a wrong fandom

WAIT DID THEY REALLY JUST
Did they just take THE SAME Bee and Puppycat and make it LONGER for Netflix??????
Does that mean I didn't have to rewatch it twice in a row to comprehend at least a lil bit what tf was going on???? I had to just wait for a normal show?????
Not like I mind, the cartoon is gorgeous either way (I'm on ep one btw and I think at least the first of Bee's weird dreams looked cooler in the og show) BUT MAN
I never thought I'd actually see the day

Hey hermits of tumblr here's a fun challenge for you:
Describe your character quirks i.e. list out habits and traits you have that would make you stand out if you were a character in a work of fiction. This is an exercise in finding something unique about each of us. And also a possible help for writers looking for something to add to their characters ;)
Here's my ✨ character quirks ✨
Hates wearing makeup but likes the process of someone applying makeup on her or doing her hair
Actually uses a set of like a hundred aquarelle pencils instead of eye liner/lipstick/masquerade makeup when she feels extra fancy (usually ends up making rainbow eye liner)
Sometimes acts like a cat around friends she's comfortable with (rubs head, lies with head on knees, purrs when receives pats)
Has a comedic amount of cats (four) and wants more
Has zero coherence in clothing style a bunch of fandom clothes being the only constant thing
Wears exclusively converse spring through autumn (as long as the weather is good enough)
Carries a book around most of the time; in fact spent her prom reading and tuning out the music (which she is extremely proud of and will tell everyone at the first opportune moment)
Swears a whole fucking lot
Quotes memes/films/TV shows a lot or at least really wants to with the only thing stopping her the fact that she knows a quote she has in mind is too niche to be understood
Absolutely cannot sleep with the lights on or during the day; will wake up at dawn if the curtains aren't drawn
Grandma friend: will try to feed you everything there is in the house if you come visit
Some people spend tons of money on clothes; others can't walk past a make-up shop; this bitch has no self-control when entering a bookstore (in fact she would refuse to spend too much on food but then she goes near a bookstore and wakes up an hour later with two bags of books)
Compliments friends in fairly smooth pick-up lines at any given opportunity

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

**Gender Construction**
In this entry, I will examine the following critical questions: What gender norm is constructed or undone in this artifact, how is it rhetorically done, and how does it promote the dominant ideology over a marginalized group or push back against the ideology or gender norms? And is it productive or ethical?
I will analyze Disney’s movie Beauty and the Beast from the lens of gender construction and will be examining how the interactions between the two different sexes perpetuate and also push back against societal gender norms. This movie both challenges traditional gender norms by characterizing hurtful gender norms in the antagonist and positive gender norms in the protagonist, but also constructs traditional gender norms through the relationships that exist between males and females. The push back against traditional gender norms in Beauty in the Beast is somewhat productive, but also hurtful because the main audience, children, may not understand or realize that certain gender norms are being portrayed. Overall, Beauty and the Beast somewhat successfully
Beauty and the Beast is considered to be a classic Disney movie and was released in theaters in 1991. According to IMDb, the movie grossed 440.1 million USD when it was in theaters and according to The Numbers was the most profitable movie Disney had ever made at the time. According to these numbers alone, it is evident that Beauty and the Beast was a widely viewed children’s movie. Although the movie is now 30 years old, many children across the world, especially in America, still continue to be exposed to this movie and likely know Belle’s story. Additionally, a live action remake of the movie came out in 2017 which holds many of the same language, actions and tropes.
In her book called Undoing Gender, Judith Butler examines the ways in which we have constructed gender. She explains that “If gender is a kind of a doing, an incessant activity performed, in parti, without one’s knowing and without one’s willing, it is not for that reason automatic or mechanical,” (1). In this way, Butler is explaining that everything around our conceptions and understandings of gender are created by ourselves and that it is not an inherent sense of knowledge that someone is born with. This idea of gender construction is the lens that we will be reviewing Beauty and the Beast with because a variety of media outlets play a role on constructing perceptions of gender and what it means to be a boy or a girl.
One of the negative gender constructions that is portrayed in the movie is the characterization of Belle through her intelligence. Although Belle is the protagonist of the movie and is likeable, admirable and kind, she is also portrayed as being an outcast because of her appreciation of books. This is a constant theme throughout the movie and is even observed by many of the supporting characters in the story. Specifically, many of the supporting characters make fun of her and question why she is more interested in books than Gaston. Although she is the protagonist and a character that many children who view the movie most likely love, there is still the perception that being smart makes you an outsider. The movie could be pushing back against this stereotype because Belle is the protagonist, but the movie also couples this with pressure from outside characters that Belle should be heavily interested in men rather than books. Although this is challenged, by the end of the movie Belle still ends up with a man which implies that to be happy one must be interested in men more than they are interested in knowledge.
Another negative gender construction that is portrayed is the one that is portrayed through the male characters in the movie. In both Gaston and the Beast constant portrayals of male aggression, female objectification and lack of emotionality are present in these characters. This is present through Gaston’s allusions to “hunting” Belle and the Beast’s decision to hold Belle hostage in place of her father. The majority of emotions that are displayed by both of these characters (until later on in the movie) is aggression and anger. For children that are watching this movie, this gives them a strong perception that it’s appropriate for males to act in this way. Furthermore, it suggests that they should act in this way because although the Beast changes by the end of the movie and becomes a much kinder person, it suggests to young children that men who act aggressively or with anger will change. It gives a false perception that you can change someone and that they will change for the better.
Not only does the movie provide a gender construction for children in the relationships that they have with members of the opposite gender, but they also only focus on heterosexual relationships and disregard other gender fluid identities. In this way, gender is constructed and for children viewing this movie, they are likely seeing the relationships in this movie and building their own framework around the “norm” of being heterosexual. This pairs the idea of gender and sexuality together, even though they are two separate entities, and implies that if you are one gender you will have one specific sexuality.
Although this is just one movie out of thousands that a children or a person will see in their life, this movie repeats and perpetuates themes that are present in these thousands of movies. Other scholars have cited the importance of Disney and the tropes that are present in the movies because of the influence that these movies have on kids. Author Andreas Muller-Hartmann explains in an article called, “Is Disney Safe for Kids? – Subtexts in Walt Disney’s Animated Films,” that Disney plays a huge role in “forming their moral vision of what good and evil are, what gender roles one can aspire to, and how other ethnicities and cultures can be viewed,” (400). In this way, the messages that Disney sends are incredibly influential on the lives of children and the content in these movies should be rhetorically paid attention to.
Many children across the world, and especially in America, are exposed to Disney movies and the tropes they convey. Beauty and the Beast may be one in thousands of children movies, but the patterns of gender construction are never ending. More recent Disney movies may challenge traditional depictions of gender norms more than older ones, but there are still significant stereotypes, uses of language and tropes that are associated with one gender over another. Disney movies are an integral part of many individual’s childhood and plays a massive role in influencing the lens and framework young people have of the world. The small choices, actions and depictions in movies like Beauty and the Beast matter because collectively, movies with these types of situations create a world of understanding for those that are still learning.

CLOVERFIELD Phantom Company Sets Off Viral Marketing Campaign
With this past Tuesday, January 18th, being the 10-year anniversary of the theatrical release of the unexpected sci-fi box hit, Cloverfield, fans were hoping for some sort of news on the anticipated third installment to the series. To much disappointment, there were no teasers released, no pictures, no trailer, no random earthquakes. Nothing… or was there?
It looks like J.J. Abram’s production company, Bad Robot Productions, has begun its viral marketing campaign for the third film of the Cloverfield universe, aptly named the ‘Cloververse’, supposedly titled ‘God Particle’. Late last night there was some activity taking place online and fans are going wild.
A little backstory on the puzzling release history of the films makes some sense considering recent developments. Back in the early months of 2007, a vague teaser trailer was released at Comic-Con for director Matt Reeves’ (Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) Cloverfield film. Wanting to keep the project under wraps, no details were given regarding the plot and cast. The mystery shrouding the film caused a lot of hype, resulting in a few title changes to throw audiences off and a lot of highly realistic online marketing campaigns similar to the pre-release tactics of The Blair Witch Project. Websites for a fake Japanese energy company, Tagruato, a fake drink company, Slusho!, and more littered the internet. All of this highly intrigued alternate reality gamers, specifically those on the forums of ARG.com and Unfiction.com, immediately began investigating these fake goods and service sites. They uncovered MySpace profiles (later revealed to be the cast of the film), photos, posters, and teasers linked to this famed cinematic release.
Producer, Abrams, confirmed at the time that the only “official” site for the movie was 1-18-08.com. This site lead users to a page of time-sensitive Lovecraftian-style picture puzzles. If users kept the page open long enough they were graced with the sound of a horrifying monster’s roar sound byte and a seven-digit number displayed across the screen. Users discovered they could text this number and receive a monster sound ringtone and downloadable desktop or cell phone background picture of a destroyed city (oh the early 2000’s).
This viral technique of involving the audience and creating a tangible atmosphere around them in order to prepare for the release of the film was a very new concept at the time. The creators of Cloverfield, including writer Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, World War Z) wanted to immerse and engage their audience before the movie was dropped out of nowhere on them. They truly mastered the art of building anticipation. When the film was finally released movie-goers could not get to the theaters fast enough. Cloverfield is a found footage film centered on a few friends played by a now well known cast including: Michael Stahl-David (Girls Against Boys), Mike Vogel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Odette Anabele (The Unborn), Lizzie Caplan (Mean Girls), Jessica Lucas (Evil Dead) and T.J. Miller (Deadpool), throwing a going creature away party in an apartment in the middle of New York when a Godzilla-like monster attacks and destroys the city. It was met with some mixed reviews, but ultimately dominated the box office and was well received by critics and viewers alike.
The buzz about the movie eventually quieted down. The monster retreated to its hiding spot and remained dormant… for eight years.
Bad Robot did some kicking around on the internet in early 2015 launching another viral campaign for what fans believed would be the sequel to Cloverfield. The Tagruato website was randomly updated calling the attention of alternate reality game seekers and Cloverfield fans across the internet. The sight contained elements similar to the 1-18-08.com site, but users were able to dig up limited information on a man named Howard Stambler and his young daughter.
On March 11th, 2016, as if something had dropped out of the sky, 10 Cloverfield Lane hit theaters across the country. The film, directed by Dan Trachtenberg (No Escape), written by Josh Campbell (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), Matt Stuecken, Damien Chazelle (La La Land), starring Marry Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski) and John Gallagher Jr. (Hush) was an instant hit. Winstead plays a young woman involved in car accident who wakes up in the underground bunker of a strange man, named Howard Stambler, who vows to keep her and another young man safe from the alien dangers that lurk the land above them.
This “blood relative”, as described by Abrams, was not a direct sequel to Cloverfield, but rather exists in the same universe and could possibly occur within the same time period. Abrams, Trachtenberg, and Winstead all have hinted and teased fans at wanting to return for a third film. Abrams mentioned on multiple occasions wanting to do a final installment to connect all of the stories that exist in the Cloververse at some point in his career.
In October 2016 Bad Robot released information regarding what most are sure to be the third Cloverfield film, titled God Particle. Again, no plot or cast details were given. Then, again, radio silence.
Last night, the timely update of the Tagruato website ignited the Cloververse out from its slumber and thus began the tidal wave of fan inquiry. The alternate reality site went live showing an incredibly blurry and cryptic page as seen below.
The image of a distorted 415 Unsupported Media Error box is seen on the screen with a sort of coding and progress bar below it confusing even the most savvy of online experts. The pixelated images in the background have yet to be deciphered, however, thanks to a few Reddit users, the very faint text box below the progress bar was translated to read:
Tokyo – January 18 2018: Tagruato has begun development on a revolutionary new energy technology in what CEO Garo Yoshida called a technological great leap forward for our planet. This renewable technology will take at least 4 years to complete along with another 6 years international regulatory bodies to bring the powerful revolutionary energy source by April 2028.
More news followed to confirm the official release date of God Particle being April 28th, 2018.
My personal favorite Cloverfield theory that has been floating around right now? Listen to this:
The ominous upcoming film, A Quiet Place, starring John Krazinski (13 Hours: The Secret soldiers of Benghazi), who is also directing, and wife Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train), is possibly another “blood relative” within the Cloververse. The film’s plot revolves around a family living completely silent in the woods in fear that any sound they make will awaken a terrifying, unidentified entity. Word on the street is the entity is that of our Cloverfield monsters who stir at the hint of a sound. New York City, being a very loud metropolis possibly awakened the dormant beast in Cloverfield, the same way Winstead’s character setting off a loud explosion to her bunker alarmed the creatures her captor was keeping her from in the final act of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Bad Robot is notorious for purposely leading fans off the radar more than once before but for now it’s all fun fandom speculation.
However, when you think about it, maybe it’s not as crazy as it sounds? When it comes to this particular film franchise the unexpected is ironically completely expected.

[ENG TRANS] 170629 Kim Donghan's Interview with Star1
Q. Your daily life seems to have changed a lot before and after participating in Produce 101. How is it? Donghan: From last time, I’ve only been practicing and that was it. But now, just like today, I film for photoshoots and go for interviews as well, it’s fun to experience things I’ve never experienced before. And among anything else, it’s really fascinating when I walk in the streets and people recognise me. Last time, when I was promoting in a dance team in my hometown, Daegu, whenever I go to the city area, some people would recognise me. But lately, even when I enter or leave the company, people take pictures of me. And I think I’m a bit more careful now. Previously, when I walk, I would always walk hastily, but now I’m trying to walk more civilly.
Q. What do you usually do if it’s not practice? Donghan: I practice for 6 days and my rest day would be on Sunday, so I go out and watch a movie. It hasn’t been long since I came to Seoul so I don’t have much friends, so I watch movies alone or watch together with other trainee friends. Whenever possible during weekdays, I watch dramas or movies. Recently, I’m addicted to “One Piece”.
Q. You seem like someone who’s detailed. How’s your personality like in real life? Donghan: I think I’m someone with sense. I think I know what someone needs well. I usually listen and remember the words of someone, and when it’s their birthday or a special day, I’ll give them the thing they want as a present. So I think in terms of this, I have sense. Also, my personality is if I’m close with someone, I joke around a lot and do skinships a lot to the point where some people get tired of it.
Q. The personality you have seems popular among both boys and girls? Donghan: I went to a boys’ midle and high school so I know boys but not too sure about girls. Haha.
Q. Leave aside your shame for a while and boast about yourself. Donghan: I like exercising so there’s almost no exercise that I can’t do. I’m not extremely good, but I know all the basics. (T/N: Not too bad, not too good). Also, my height is 182cm so I’m at the taller side. If you look at my face, my forehead seems to be protruding a little, so I think that’s pretty. I’m not really contented with the parts of my face, so if I had to choose something I like, it’d be my forehead. Haha.
Q. We heard that you’ve been exercising/doing sports since you were young. Donghan: I started doing Hapkido from 6 years old until I was in 1st year middle school. Hapkido uses lots of defensive tactics so it’s fun. I started coaching at such a young age, I even taught people older than me. I wanted to become a Hapkido player or a bodyguard, but because of my injury, I couldn’t. I can do sports/exercise now, but not as strong as last time.
Q. After that, you entered a dance team. Weren’t you concerned of the change (from Hapkido to dance)? Donghan: I wasn’t concerned because there was a long period of time between when I stopped Hapkido and started dancing. After stopping sports/exercise in middle school year 1, I worked hard on my studies and was in the middle rank. And in high school year 1, I joined a dance team called “The Face” and it was really fun. I enjoyed being able to feel the reactions of the auidence. Ever since then, I dreamt of being an idol. My high school years was spent promoting in a dance team. I even missed my self-study night classes, and during weekends, I will take the first train out and come back in the last train. I was really working hard while having fun at that time.
Q. As compared to other trainees in Produce 101, you were someone who had a dramatic rise in ranking that gathered a lot of attention. What do you think was the reason you could go from a low ranking to a high one? Donghan: When I was in a dance team, I covered “Call Me Baby” before so I already knew the choreography. So instead of the choreography, I practiced more on the feels, gestures and expressions. While watching EXO sunbaenim’s videos, I try to follow their image, expressions or just the atmosphere of it. EXO sunbaenims are people that I like, so I thought of whether they would like my image or not.
Q. Do you personally think your expressions or feels in “Shape of You” is stronger and more detailed as compared to “Call Me Baby”? Donghan: When looking at my focus cam for “Call Me Baby”, I focused more on angles that make me come out more prettier. And I honestly thought that I would get eliminated during the 2nd ranking announcement. So I wanted to do my best and try everything I can, and even tried to do various expressions and gestures. But all of it was shown so I thought it was slightly “too much”. But fascinatingly, among the 3 focus cams I had, it was the highest in terms of views. So I guess the fans really like that kind of image. During “Call Me Baby”, as it was my first stage, I was really nervous but during my 2nd and 3rd stage, I think I wasn’t as nervous.
Q. There are lots of fans who think that it’s a pity you lack screentime. I think you yourself would feel that it was a pity, so what do you think was the reason that you didn’t have much screentime? Donghan: Since there are lots of people, even if you give 1 minute per person, it will exceed an hour. So instead, they only focus on 1 or 2 people per team. So I think the production team chose to focus on stories that could be told in like 30 seconds, and since I didn’t have a story to tell among the 101 people, I guess that’s why I was excluded?
Q. When did you feel the happiest among the filming period? Donghan: I did “Shape Of You” for Produce 101 and it was the stage that received the first encore in Season 2. There were 4 teams in the dance category, but 3 of them were exciting songs. Our song wasn’t a song that coulf be enjoyed while clapping and stuffs, so I was really worried. But as soon as rhe stage ended, we heard encore calls so at that time it felt most exciting and rewarding. For vocal and rap position trainees, they have lyrics (to focus on), but as for dance position, we had a different situation. While waiting for our stage on Sunday, we kept changing the choreographies, even until the day before the performance. It was really a situation where we weren’t in the right state of mind.
Q. A new image of me that I found out after Produce 101? Donghan: Firstly, I heard opinions saying that it’ll look pretty if I put my fringe up. Before Produce 101, I’ve never dyed my hair before. Everything was a first try for me, but the reactions were unexpectedly good. Also, I think I was able to make various expressions as compared to others. During “Call Me Baby”, it was cool, during “Shape of You”, it was sexy, and “I Know You Know” had a lively image. So I received compliments on being able to do different concepts for the different stages.
Q. These days while practicing, is there anything you’re concerned about? Donghan: I’m currently practicing on singing and dancing at the same time. During Produce 101, it was my first time trying to sing and dance at the same time, so I felt like I was really unstable. The breathing and balancing was slightly hard for me. I’m practicing hard so that I can dance and sing at the same time more naturally.
Q. Your plans for the future? Donghan: I’m working hard in preparing for my debut. I want to do a stage where males find it cool. I want to show a stage with good performance and song to the point where people will look at it and say that they want to make a cover of it. Also, if there’s an opportunity, I want to try acting and appearing in variety. My goal is to be an all-rounder multiplayer (a person who’s good at everything).

A WOUND TURNED INTO LIGHT: BODY & SOLD AT THE LABORATORY THEATER
 BY KAYLEIGH O’CONNELL
"you seem to replace your brain with your heart, you take things so hard than you fall apart you try to explain but before you can start those cry baby tears come out of the dark "
The hauntingly girlish voice of Melanie Martinez’ marks our descent into childhood horror in Laboratory Theater’s Body & Sold. The theme of lost innocence that runs through Martinez’ album is paralleled in this play by Deborah Lake Fortson which chronicles the experiences of human trafficking survivors. Based on interviews with survivors, the piece is grounded in reality while simultaneously achieving a level of surrealism.
The surrealism stems from the topic itself in many ways. Most of us, hopefully, have not been victims of human trafficking and that creates a certain natural distance between the art and its audience. The beauty of the work is that it's entirely conscious of that distance and utilizes it to its advantage. First by establishing that it exists physically in a place that is our reality and yet not. The stage is remarkably bare with minimal dressing just chairs and a staircase. They reference places that we never travel to but inhabit all the same. A delicate ecosystem of physical abstraction and emotional realism that is sometime successful, sometimes less so.
Directed by Kathleen Moye who is pursuing her master’s degree in drama therapy, you can see that influence in the staging. The chairs often set up to form a semicircle as the characters’ discuss their lives, the entire play feels like a group therapy session.  The more obvious sign of her background however is the compassion and clarity with which the material is handled.
The characters are aware of themselves within the framework of the script and make joking asides wondering who will be cast to play them in the show. They directly address the audience, confronting us with the tragedy of their circumstances and inviting us to walk around in it. They never provoke pity nor do they seek it. Instead they achieve something that is all too rare in sexual assault narratives: understanding.
Very often people address the issue with all the finesse of an afterschool special. Although well intentioned, these efforts may do more harm than good and rape culture still runs rampant. It’s insidious and permeates nearly all aspects of social life. It’s in our streets, our schools, ourselves. Combatting sexual assault begins with unlearning these biases as a community and standing in solidarity with one another.
Body & Sold is all about solidarity. The characters are vastly different people but as the show progresses you see the cruelty that intertwines them. Their voices are interwoven thematically and literally as they rage against the system that abandoned them. They mourn for the loss of lives that never were and lovers who never truly loved them. Most of all, they are searching. Searching endlessly for someone who will treat them with tenderness and warmth.
The best they can manage is temporary sanctuary. They meet a man with kind eyes who offers them hot chocolate and a place to stay the night. They meet a man who's really a very good man. He almost never hits them. An older man shows them love and they feel it all over. They feel safe and they are. For a time.
Perhaps one of the strangest misconceptions about domestic violence is the idea that it begins in violence and they should have known better. You can’t know better, you really can’t. Rarely does it ever begin in blood and screaming. It’s more akin to stepping into a warm bath and over time the temperature gets turned up until your skin starts to peel off. You don’t leave the water because you’re accustomed to it by now. There is comfort in the familiar no matter how deadly. Trying to leave will get you killed. Better to stay.
In one of the most chilling moments of the show, we hear from someone on the other side of this script. A man who picked up a young girl he found at the bus stop. He takes her out everywhere. Clubs, parties, fancy restaurants. He showers her in affection and buys her diamond earrings from Tiffany’s. As he sits on the edge of the stage, he confides in the audience. A Machiavellian move straight out of Shakespeare and House of Cards. He tells us that we gotta be cool. Treat them special. Find out what they like and get it for them. Make them feel like you love them. By sharing this with us we become complicit in his abuse.
We also see the various tactics used by abusers both familial and otherwise to lure young women into these situations. One girl suffers at the hands of a family member who tells her its ‘our little secret’ while another person abandons two girls in a strip club knowing full well what’s going to happen to them.
Returning to the archetype of the abuser, we see a more nuanced approach to the trope. Something they coined “the sophisticated pimp”. A young gay boy fresh out of the midwest moves to New York to escape a heavily religious background and falls in with an older man. He is nothing like the monsters you envision. At first he is closer to a kindly Daddy Warbucks adopting Annie out of the orphanage and bringing her into a new life of glamour and luxury. He treats the young boy gently but the child has no delusions about this arrangement. He knows that this will eventually involve sex and has accepted that. He grows to love this man and in turn feels loved.
The realization years later that the man he loved was using him is nothing short of devastating. When the character tells us that he “still can’t work out what he felt for me” it reminds us that the aftermath of trauma lasts a lifetime. The post traumatic stress shared by all the survivors is never fully overcome. Coping not conquering. The survivors describe themselves as living in a war zone that America doesn’t want to see. A war that they are then blamed for.
This show has absolutely no tolerance for victim blaming or the so called lolita complex. The axis of responsibility is never placed on their shoulders. Indeed it would be impossible to do so considering these people entered into this as children and teenagers. One of the key elements of the play is a young girl sitting on the staircase. Dressed up like a porcelain doll, she remains silent for most of the show. A living reminder of the childhood that was stolen from them. She has one great scene where she tapes up her teddy bear’s mouth, telling the bear it has a big mouth and there are things we can’t talk about. It serves as a strong condemnation of the culture of shame that surrounds sexual assault victims and the erasure of their traumas.
That being said while the characters are never held responsible for the horror that was inflicted on them they are also never reduced to just their pain. They retain their agency and are active agents in their own lives. Free to make both good and bad choices, all of their decisions are born from a very human place of desperation and wild hope. We see them struggle with these decisions and their consequences but we can never judge them for it.
They don’t always fall nicely into their assigned roles either. An aspect of sexual trafficking that is well addressed in this show is women’s role in abuse. There’s what you might consider positive sexism in portrayals of sexual traffickers on television. This idea that a woman can only be a victim or a hero. That our innate womanly goodness prevents us from being anything else. While it's certainly true that this play is full of female heroes (the social workers come to mind)  it is not interested in black and white morality. One of the survivors describes with great shame how they indoctrinated her to recruit young girls. Trained her. They plant seeds in your self conscious telling you that you are worthless. They break you and rebuild you in their image.
Amidst all this darkness, there remains light. Levity and joy. The friendship between two girls that outlasts their shared trauma and centers them. The former pornographer thinking about sending his dad a copy of his films. The young man in leather who
Mothers being reunited with their children. Girls going back to school to get their degrees. Becoming social workers, opening shelters and volunteering in LGBT youth centers.
Together they learn to breathe. Together they build a family.
Ultimately the purpose the show isn’t to provide catharsis or to wrap a shiny red ribbon around it and tell us everything’s going to be ok. It’s not ok. The survivors in this play learn to breathe around the pain in their chests but that pain should have never existed in the first place. At the show they handed out pamphlets for abuse counseling centers and the q & a portion revolved around informing the community of local efforts to combat human trafficking.
The Laboratory Theater of Florida is known for its youth outreach programs and its commitment to social activism theater. French painter Georges Braque once said that art is a wound turned into light. The Lab exemplifies this light.
