Anais' Attic- Balatro.

Have you ever wanted to play Poker, but it's actually Yu-Gi-Oh, but it's Slay the Spire? Well that's what you'll get out of Balatro, the latest Deck-builder Roguelike to hit the market.

I'm a fan of roguelikes/lites, both Clo and I have been for a long time. Risk of Rain 2, Rogue Legacy 1 & 2, Hades, even Enter the Gungeon to a certain extent- and of course, Slay the Spire. Hell, even in Honkai Star Rail we ended up only playing through more of the game so we could unlock more Simulated Universe content.

There's just something about the addiction of “Just one more run, just one more run, cmon, can't end on a loss, just one more” that scratches the lizard brain’s itchy rash like freshly manicured nails, and Balatro definitely hits that urge. It's the prestigious winner of two of our personal rewards, one of which is that in an effort to not have to stop playing, we decided to purchase it on both Ps5 and switch. Sure it's only 15$, but that should tell you all you need to know about how good it really is.

But in case you'd like a full breakdown, here you go.

As stated Balatro is, in essence, another deck-builder roguelike. You win battles, earn money, and proceed to use said money to acquire new cards so you can win more battles to earn more money and so on. Same loop, new software. But one of Balatro's unique things is that it uses your standard 52-card deck as its base to build from. It's more complicated than that by the end of the average run, but that is where it starts. If you've seen a 52-card deck, you've seen every card in the starting deck. Where it gets wild is the different jokers you can use to build into getting all sorts of wild combinations, like turning all your cards into the same suit, or giving you a 4x multiplier for playing a four of a kind.

Because that's Balatro's other shtick- it's a poker game on top of everything else. You know all the memes you can find joking about Chess 2? Well this is Poker 2. If you know how to tell a three of a kind from a straight flush, you're a bit ahead of the curve, but you'll find your advantage means little when you need 300,000 points to beat the end boss of an ante, and you're barely making 30k with your hands. You're in Balatro's casino now, and you're gonna play by its rules.. But hey, at least it'll tell you the rules. That's more than you'd get in vegas.

Balatro is, however, all gameplay. Not so much as a scrap of an excuse plot. If you imagine a scale with “Roguelike storytelling” on it, then Balatro is far on the other end, about as far away from Hades as it gets. If that turns you off, no big deal, I don't judge. But I will tell you you're missing out.

Balatro has exploded in popularity, and it's been mostly to its benefit. I say mostly because while the game did manage to sell over 500k copies in two weeks, it didn't manage to escape without an 18+ Pegi rating, and an outright ban in South Korea as of the time of this writing. Banned and outrageously rated for the same reason there's no more game corner in the Pokémon games- it's too much like gambling, even when games that are essentially gambling and encourage gambling are not only allowed, they're shoved in your face.

If you're just looking for a thumbs up or down, let me answer that with a cautionary tale. Clover and I were told to give this one a try by a friend, and it proceeded to consume just over 30 hours of our sadly limited time on this earth over the span of a week. Given we work a dayjob, but have the ability to play for an hour at lunch, that's essentially nothing but Balatro in every spare moment. Which is why Balatro is the recipient of our other personal reward, being awarded the honor of getting deleted just so that we could get any work done.

After all, if the house always wins, then the only winning move is not to play at all. - 🌙

Should we have an "open world" genre? Does the concept make sense at all?

Should we have an "open world" genre? Does the concept make sense at all? I don't know you but when judging games or categorizing my steam library I divide them by genre as each has its own perks (judging a racing game by its story is dumb). Thing is, you know that game genres are differentiated according to their systems and mechanics: if you have a party of adventurers, each with a different specialty, which you use to fight random monsters in a turn-based system to level them up and fight stronger monsters, it's a JRPG; if you're stuck in closed creepy setting with small inventory and puzzles and the enemies outmatch you, it's a survival-horror; if you're the ruler of a small country and you have to grow and expand and modernize your technology to have a large empire, it's a 4X, and so on.Thing is, people keep talking about the "open world" genre, where "open world" is more of a game structure than a genre. And so you have Forza Horizon, which is open world+racing; The Elder Scrolls, which is open world+RPG; Far Cry, which is open world+FPS; or Metal Gear Solid V, which open world+stealth. Even Assassin's Creed, a game series that's criticized for been for been "always the same" actually has several differences between their games, as AC1-Revelations are more about Prince of Persia-like parkour, AC3-Rogue being focused on Arkham-like combat, AC Unity and Syndicate being pure stealth and then there's the action-RPG trilogy.But then we have the kings of the open world: Rockstar, with GTA and RDR. And you can look at them and conclude that GTA is primarly a driving game which is focused on car chases and chaos rather than races, and RDR is actually a cover-based shooter like Gears of War, with every mechanic affecting this. But truth is driving and shooting are only two of these game's mechanics and something you'll do for less than 50% of the your playtime. As a conclussion, the only sensible way to categorize these games are "open world".Note that this also happens with "roguelike" and "sandbox": these are not gameplay-centric genres abut game modes: you can have FPS, deck builder or platform roguelikes the same way you can have puzzle or strategy sandboxes.Or maybe I'm overthinking stuff to procrastinate work. Hexarchy development moving forward but with Steam Play support

Hexarchy strategy game holding onto Proton for Linux with Windows PC. Due to the ongoing support and effort of developer Main Tank Software. Which working its way onto Steam. Indie game development studio Main Tank Software informs about Linux and Proton support. Along with support for their historical deck building strategy game, Hexarchy. The was an Alpha update, but it seems that Proton support is the main choice.

A native Linux version is also possible in the future.

Since Unity 3D is the game engine of choice, Linux porting should be easy enough. However, it's also up to the developer and a "wait and see". This is the one big downside of Proton support, it hinders a native port. And of course, developers are catching on. Having played the Hexarchy Demo, I sincerely hope for a native Linux build.

Hexarchy - The Journey So Far

Hexarchy is a fast-paced strategy game. One that takes the decisions of a multi-hour turn-based 4x game and packs them into an action packed hour long game. Play multiplayer online with up to 10 players. You can also customize your single player game. In Hexarchy, you can explore to find other civilizations in a procedurally generated world. Then build cities, armies, make upgrades with your cards, and research more tech. The gameplay boils almost all of your decisions down to two actions. Both playing cards or ordering units. Currently, there is a free demo of the game available on Steam. Which also sees upgrades with Proton support. So it's worth playing.

Damen 67m superyacht support vessel Sea Axe 6711 Dutch superyacht builder Amels has announced that the Damen 67.15m Sea Axe superyacht support vessel named 6711 has completed her sea trials, reaching top speeds of 22 knots. As part of the Damen Shipyards Group – which consists of 40 shipyards around the world – Amels manages the sales and marketing of the Damen-built axe-bow support vessels. The second 67m Sea Axe, 6711 was launched in November 2013. She is due for delivery later this month in January 2014, ahead of schedule. The Sea Axe yacht has a grey hull and white superstructure and has been faired and painted to superyacht standards. She accommodates up to 21 staff and crew members. 6711 boasts 275 square metres of deck space, excluding her fully certified helipad, and she has a 74 square metre garage and workshop. She has been fully specified with a focus on diving and features an extensive 74 square metre dive centre, which include a decompression chamber. Powered by four MTU 16V 4000 engines, she has a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 16 knots. Painted Brick Exterior Home Renovation

  This was a total renovation that sold mid- way through the build so the builder, Level Team Contracting, had the opportunity to work with the client on the finishing touches. Most of the homes in the area were built in the 1920s/30s and the renovation of this brick home not only respects this era but it also reflects it with its architectural details. On top of that, the client loved white so the builders made sure to balance it throughout the interior and exterior of the home with stunning natural elements.

All The Game Announcements From The 2019 PC Gaming Show

The PC Gaming Show continues to run rather under the radar with not much hype, but there are always good nuggets of game announcements.

This is the same for the 2019 PC Gaming Show. A lot of good reveals, though most of the games are Epic Games Store exclusives- which is still a point of contention.

Evil Genius 2: World Domination

Rebellion’s take on a sequel to the evil lair builder and management gets shown for the first time. From the trailer, it still has the over-the-top cartoony aesthetic of the first, which should please many.

The game is slated for a release on Steam, with a chance to enter the beta by signing up at evilgeniusgame.com.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

We got a glimpse of real gameplay footage for the long-anticipated RPG sequel. And it definitely shaping up to be a first-person RPG/immersive sim as the original was.

The trailer should set up what to expect now that you’re dead and a low-life Thinblood vampire. The Masquerade, the warring factions and some of the vampire powers you get to use are seen.

Not seen on the PC Gaming Show is the full gameplay trailer, seen here, which guides you on how a particular missions plays out- stealth, optional routes, gunplay, combat and dialogue trees.

Bloodlines 2 is still slated for a release in Q1 2020 on PS4, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Paradox Store) and Xbox One.

Starmancer

Billed as “Dwarf Fortress in space”, it’s a colony builder by developers Ominux and publishers Chucklefish.

It will be out on Steam.

Chivalry 2

The sequel to Chivalry: Medieval Warfare by Tom Banner Studios and published by Tripwire Interactive. The sequel will be an Epic Games Store timed exclusive, releasing in 2020.

Mosaic

A haunting-looking game with low-poly art by developers Kill Byte and publisher Raw Fury. It will be out later this year

The interesting-looking idle game Blipblop is out now on iOS and Android.

Midnight Ghost Hunt

Published by Coffee Stain Publishing and developed Vaulted Sky Games, it’s 4v4 of hunters versus Ghost, ala Prop Hunt, but with a twist.

The ghostly enemies can fight back a bit, but survive until midnight hits- 4 minutes of a match- and the tables are turned where the ghost will be hunting the ghost hunters.

It will be available on Steam.

Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer’s Legacy

A rougelite that your actions when exploring in the current run will impact the next. Published by Big Sugar, it’s a beautiful looking action RPG.

It will be out next year in 2020 for PC and consoles.

Conan Chop Chop

Conan the Barbarian is now a cute rougelike. First revealed on April 1st, now it has been re-revealed that it’s an actual game being in development.

The Last Oasis

A nomadic survival MMO where the lands are mostly dunes and you have big ships called Walkers as your vehicle. The game will be out on September 3rd on Steam.

Age Of Wonders Planetfall

The new, sci-fi entry to the 4X series gets a ridiculously fast-paced trailer. It also has Dinosaurs With Lasers.

It will be out on August 6th on PS4, PC (Steam, GOG), and Xbox One.

Zombie Army 4

The other, unannounced Rebellion game at E3 is another sequel to Zombie Army. The four-player co-op shooter where you shoot Nazi Zombies.

It will be out on PS4, PC (Epic Games Store) and Xbox One.

Remnant: From The Ashes

The new co-op shooter with procedural elements by Gunfire Games of Darksiders III fame.

It will be out on August 20th for the PS4, PC (Steam, Arc) and Xbox One.

Griftlands

First debuted at PC Gaming Show, Klei’s new RPG has now reworked as a rougelike deck builder game. And Alpha is coming on July 11 on the Epic Games Store.

Planet Zoo

The new park management sim game by Frontier Developments, which did Planet Coaster, gets its first gameplay trailer.

Just like modern zoos, the gameplay will have you learning more on how to conserve the actual animals. Fun gameplay and educational.

It will be out on November 5th on Steam.

Shenmue III

Not something you would expect to appear here. Yu Suzuki appeared on the PC Gaming Show stage briefly to show the new E3 trailer fo the long-awaited sequel.

It looks charmingly janky in some ways. The game is headed to Epic Games Store (and PS4) on November 19th.

Song Of Conquest

A Heroes Of Might And Magic-inspired RTS published by Coffee Stain. It will be out in late 2020.

Vermintide II Versus

The 4-player co-op game set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe is getting a PVP mode, and you get to play as the Skavens, naturally.

Per Aspera

Published by Raw Dury, this is a game about terraforming Mars so we can go live on the planet. A different take on what Survival Mars was.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Patrice Desilites was interviewed about his new game where you play as our ancestors 10 million years before, according to Darwin’s evolution theory. You have to survive and evolve the species that will later become humankind in the lush, dangerous jungle.

It will be out on the Epic Games Store first on August 27th.

Auto Chess

After a pretty normal Epic Games Store sizzle reel, Epic dropped a bomb by showing that Auto Chess is coming exclusively to the Epic Games Store. This is based on the Dota 2 mod, by the creators of the mod and built on Unreal Engine.
