While bombastic predictions from top executives about their company's impact might not be anything new, the commitment to transitioning away from pure fossil fuel power is.

第二次世界大戦期を思わせる世界を舞台として謎の侵略者ネウロイと戦う「ウィッチ」と呼ばれる魔法少女たちの活躍を描く本作は、アニメ第1期で宮藤芳佳の所属する501JFWはブリタニア連邦を根拠地としてガリア共和国の解放し、続く第2期でロマーニャ公国を根拠地としてヴェネツィア公国を解放した。そして第3期となる今作では新たに服部静夏を加えネーデルラントを根拠地としてカールスラント首都ベルリンの解放へ挑むことになるが、統合軍の最重要補給地点であるベルギカ王国アントウェルペンの港湾施設がネウロイに破壊されオペレーションサウスウィンドは延期となり、芳佳は魔法圧低下のトラブルに見舞われる。そのため、物語は中盤まで戦局は大きく動くことなく物語はとりわけミーナ、バルクホルン、ハルトマンのカールスラント組を中心に501内部の交歓と成長に主に焦点が当てられる。そこでは以前の焼き直しのようなエピソードが出てきたりもするが、これは第2期から10年経っていることから新規視聴者向けのオリエンテーションのような意味合いもあるのだろう。その一方で本作の大きな特徴の一つにウィッチ「ではない」一般軍人の活躍に光を当てている点が挙げられる。こうした描写は単なるミリ萌え作品ではなく一大架空戦記でもある本作の世界観に更なる重厚さを与えている。今回はカールスラント内のベルリンという一地域を解放したところで終わっており、ヨーロッパにおけるネウロイの脅威はいまだに去っていない。ここから更なる続編の展開を期待したい。

東浩紀氏が「動物化するポストモダン」において主唱した「物語消費」から「データベース消費」への転換は、必ずしも個々の作品の背景にある「大きな物語＝世界観設定」の衰退を意味するところではない。むしろ「データベース消費」を強力に加速させるための支援装置として「大きな物語＝世界観設定」が逆説的に要請されることになる。このような逆説を端的に表したひとつの例として2008年と2010年にアニメ化された「ストライクウィッチーズ」という作品を挙げることができる。兵器と少女を組み合わせた「ミリタリー萌え」のイラストコラムというまさしく「データベース消費」の極致の如き企画を起源に持つ同作は、アニメ、漫画、小説といったメディアミックス展開を通じて、やがて「ワールドウィッチーズシリーズ」と呼ばれる壮大な「大きな物語＝架空戦記」を構築する。そして同シリーズの名を初めて公式に冠した作品が2016年にアニメ化された本作「ブレイブウィッチーズ」である。本作はこれまでアニメ化された第501統合戦闘航空団（501JFW）とは別部隊の第502統合戦闘航空団（502JFW）の活躍を描く。時系列として本作は501JFWの1期と2期の間に相当し、また501JFWが欧州西部方面を担当する部隊であるのに対して502JFWは欧州東部方面を担当する部隊となる。すなわち、本作により同シリーズの「大きな物語＝架空戦記」は時間的にも空間的にもかなり広範な部分の映像化が達成されたことになる。これはシリーズを長期に渡って展開する上ではかなり理想的な在り方といえる。こうした意味で同シリーズはデータベース消費を徹底する事で逆説的に物語消費を復権させた稀有な例といえるかもしれない。
