P.3. AND SO HE GETS TO DIE A SAINT

Catholicism always was a part of MCR. “I was raised Catholic, which turned me off from religion because I had a very bad experience”, as Gerard once said. But we can still see a lot of religious things through the years and even now in the new era. 

Let’s start with angels that have been mentioned earlier. The first angel we saw was the one at the Shrine show and also we had them in tour promo materials.

The total number of these angels is at least 7 (including the broken ones in promo videos). So here’s some thoughts.

The Book of Revelations in the Bible is especially important in general because it focuses on the idea of the Apocalypse, linking together the themes of catholicism and the apocalyptic one.

Let’s consider some key elements of the Book of Revelation that can be linked to the mcr tour:

·       The important number in the BoR is seven (this book begins with the prophet John addressing the book to the Seven Churches of Asia, mentions a seven-headed dragon, seven seals that need to be opened, seven angelic trumpets, seven Spiritual Figures, seven bowls poured onto Earth) à it can be linked to the 7 statues of angels we can find in MCR merch, posters and other promotional items.

·       In Chapter 4 of Revelation the Four living creatures (Angels) are described. Couldn’t it be the potential link to four members of the band?

·       Seven seals:

  o 1st – 4th seals: it brings Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse down on Earth:

             1st – on a white horse, carries a bow and a crown – Conquest, ivoking Pestilence (plague from Foundations lyrics, pandemic)

             2nd – on a red horse, carries a sword – War

             3rd – on a black horse, carries the scales – Famine

             4th – on a pale horse – Death (Foundations lyrics again)

o   5th seal : “when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God […] How long  dost thou not judge and avenge our blood?” (Foundations lyrics: You must fix your heart and you must build an altar where it swells)

o   6th seal: the sixth seal will be the literal cosmic disturbances caused by nuclear war or a global earthquake that causes volcanic debris to pollute the atmosphere, which turns the moon blood red and the sun dark – link to A

o   7th seal: the final judgement which will determine who is worthy of Heaven and who isn’t (Foundations lyrics: and so he gets to die a saint but she will always be a whore)

·       In Chapter 12 of Revelations there is a War in Heaven – led by Archangel Michael against the serpent/Satan

o   The image of the Woman of the Apocalypse (who gives birth to a child who the dragon = Satan wants to kill) is important in this interpretation.

o   The Woman of the Apocalypse can also be translated as The Woman Clothed With the Sun and is considered to be Virgin Mary (C).

o   One of the best-known paintings of this woman is William’s Blake “The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun”:

This creature ow William Blake is very similar to the monster appeared in Watchmen comic (where Blake’s quote from Tyger poem appears too) :  

William Blake is the painter & author, who links The Watchmen war & the Catholicism themes.

·       In Chapter 15: John writes of seven angels with seven plagues, the last plagues ever to occur. He states that until the plagues are complete no one can enter the Temple of God (plagues à link to Foundations lyrics)

·       The seven bowls judgement in Chapter 16 are plagues brought on Earth, punishing those who went against God:

o   Noisome and grievous sores (“scabs” t-shirt from Sacramento AFTERSHOCK festival)

o   Sea turns to blood (blood, everywhere is blood when it comes to MCR :))

o   Rivers & Springs turn to blood

o   A major heatwave causes the Sun to burn with intense heat and to scorch people with fire: burning man from the merch truck as well as Foundations lyrics (Will you welcome your extinction in the morning rays)

o   The kingdom of the beast is plunged into darkness

o   The Euphrates River dries up to facilitate the crossing of the armies from the east, on their way to Israel for the battle of Armageddon - war reference

o   Earthquakes & hailstones: link to the apocalypse again

·       Chapter 17 – the Whore of Babylon is introduced (but she will always be a whore lyrics). She is described as the "Mother of Harlots" and is drunk with the blood of the saints - link to he gets to die a saint lyrics and to Vampires (blood drinking).

Another link to catholicism is Gerard praying before various songs. He says the Lord’s Prayer during shows: “Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name...”

There is also a religious reference in the Offering video: the cross the character is wearing on their back is the same cross worn by Templars during crusades (that links to the Foundations lyrics: and as you stumble through your last crusade)

Another cross, used during Crusades time, is the Jerusalem cross which is meant to represent either:

·       Five wounds of Christ

·       Christ and the four evangelists (number 4 again – as the number of members of the band)

·       Christ and the four quarters of the world

The cross bears a striking resemblence to the MCRX logo:

And to add some fun here.

To follow with the Jerusalem cross, the symbol very similar to it is the Alchemy sign which means Vinegar, linking the cross to the t-shirt from MK3:

Gerard’s vinegar shirt was paired with Frank’s shirt “Piss”. The expression “piss and vinegar” means aggressive energy.

So, the conclusion #2: we have connections to the religious side of the MCR, the otherworldy things and some connections to crusaders times where plague (”we are all plagued”) was very common. 

PS: just for funsies, we could also consider the movie Priest (2011) and the manhwa (Korean comic) of the same title to play a part in this. There were no direct references to the movie during the tour, other than that the cross the main character of the movie has tattooed on his forehead resembles the Living With Ghosts logo, but as I (Cathy) watched the movie, I couldn’t help noticing some very strange and very obvious connections.

So:

o   Priest tells the story of humanity's battle against 12 fallen angels - connection to the tour posters (angels again) + reference to catholicism 

o   The plot says about a Holy Knight named Vascar De Gullion who 'loses faith' and wanders the earth in a 'blood rage.' - references to both vampires and catholicism

o   The comic mentions order of St. Vertinez – their real name is Michael’s Sword (references to catholicism) and consists of four members (number of MCR members).

o   One of the priests of the Michael’s Sword Order first appears praying at a ruined shrine (the 2019 reunion concert took place at the Shrine)

o   Priest named Anthony loses his hand and replaces is with a hook (possible connection to Frank’s injury? that is a stretch but hey, we’re just having fun here)

o   It is important to notice that both the manhwa and the movie join all themes of the concept together - vampires, priests (Catholic references to prayers, God etc.), the war (between vampires and humans, mentioned at the very beginning of the movie) and the apocalypse (after the war). 

The universe of the movie strongly resembles Danger Days universe – there is a main Company (Church) that commands a City and expects perfect obedience from its citizens. Everything outside the City is called Wastelands and everyone living there is considered by the Church to be a disease ridden vermin. The movie mentions the War that caused the Apocalypse - a war between humans and vampires.

This happens to planets. The soul of the planet dies basically. Loses connection to source. What is our source of life? Why it called "love and light"? Why is Jesus the "son" of god. Why does he rise? That's why these tales exist. It's all about the sun. Stars are alive. They have life cycles. They have consciousness. We are fragments of the solar consciousness. Thats where our souls come from. SOLAR.

The biblical stuff is just 2,000 year old metaphors. It's all been done before. Not on earth.

As our souls fade away due to runnaway cannibalism (insane) the solar core dies.

I think its like a covenant. When we agree to incarnate here its like an escape clause for consciousness so we dont incarnate onto a planet that is living hell. We are at that point now where is moments from being a runnaway train that ends in "The Road".

The most depressing book I've ever read, I couldn't finish it, I found it too disturbing.

Today’s reading of the Scriptures from the New Testament is the 4th chapter of the book of Revelation:

After I wrote down these messages, I saw a door standing open in heaven and heard again the first voice that sounded like a trumpet.

A Voice: Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.

Immediately I was caught up in the Spirit, and I saw a throne that stood in heaven and One seated on the throne. The One enthroned gleamed like jasper and carnelian, and a rainbow encircled the throne with an emerald glow. Encircling that great throne were twenty-four smaller thrones with twenty-four elders clothed in white robes with wreaths fashioned of gold on their heads. Out of the great throne came flashes of lightning, sounds of voices, and peals of thunder. In front of the great throne, seven torches were ablaze, which are the seven Spirits of God. Also in front of the throne was a glassy sea of shimmering crystal.

In the midst of the throne and encircling the throne were four living creatures, covered all over with eyes, front to back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second creature was like an ox, the third creature had a face like the face of a human, and the fourth creature was like an eagle in full flight. These four living creatures, each of which had six wings and was covered with eyes—eyes on the outside and on the inside—did not cease chanting. All day and night they were singing.

Four Living Creatures: Holy, holy, holy

Is the Lord God who is the All Powerful,

who was, and who is, and who is coming.

And when the living creatures declared glory and honor and thanksgiving to the One seated on the throne, the One who lives throughout all the ages, the twenty-four elders fell prostrate before the One seated on the throne, worshiped the One who lives throughout all the ages, cast their golden wreaths before the throne, and chanted to Him.

24 Elders: Worthy are You, O Lord; worthy are You, O God,

to receive glory and honor and power.

You alone created all things,

and through Your will and by Your design, they exist and were created.

The Book of Revelation, Chapter 4 (The Voice)

Today’s paired reading from the First Testament is the 5th chapter of the book of Daniel:

A few decades later, the king, Belshazzar, held a state banquet and invited a thousand of his officials.

As he was tasting the wine, he ordered servants to bring in the gold and silver vessels his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar had stolen from the temple in Jerusalem many years earlier. He wanted his officials to join him, his wives, and his concubines in drinking a royal toast from them. A little later his servants returned carrying in the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple, the house of the one True God in Jerusalem. The king, his officials, his wives, and his concubines began to drink from them. As they drank the wine, they offered praise to their idols crafted in gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Suddenly the fingers of a hand—a human hand—appeared and began to write on the plaster of one of the palace walls lit by a nearby lampstand. The king stood transfixed, watching the hand as it wrote. Then his face changed. He grew pale and began to feel sick. His thoughts frightened him: what was this strange vision? His legs felt weak and wobbly. His knees knocked together. The king cried out to his servants, ordering them to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldean wise men, and the diviners.

Belshazzar (to Babylon’s wise men): A great reward awaits the first person who can read this writing and tell me what it means. He will be clothed in purple, wear a gold chain around his neck, and ascend in rank and privilege to be the third-highest-ranking ruler in the kingdom.

All the king’s purported wise men came forward to examine the wall, but no one could read the writing or tell the king what it meant. When it became clear that none of his sages could help him, King Belshazzar became even more frightened. His face grew even paler, and his officials were dumbfounded.

Belshazzar’s mother, the queen, overheard some of the discussions between the king and his noble guests, so she entered the banquet hall.

Queen: Long live the king! Don’t let this strange incident frighten you or let your face grow pale. Need I remind you that there is a gifted man in your kingdom who possesses the spirit of the holy gods. Years ago, in the time of your predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar, he was discovered to have insight, understanding, and wisdom like that of the gods. That is why King Nebuchadnezzar put him in charge of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldean astrologers, and diviners in his kingdom. This man Daniel, whom King Nebuchadnezzar named Belteshazzar, has special abilities, knowledge, and wisdom; he is able to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve problems no one else can. Why don’t you call for Daniel? He will tell you what the writing means.

With no other options, Belshazzar gave the order, and Daniel was brought before him.

Belshazzar (to Daniel): Are you that Daniel I’ve heard so much about, one of the exiles brought here from Judah by my predecessor, King Nebuchadnezzar? I have been told that you possess the spirit of the holy gods—that you have insight, understanding, and exceptional wisdom. Before you arrived, I had the wise men and enchanters brought before me to see if they could read this writing on the wall and tell me what it means, and not one of them was able to tell me. But it has been reported to me directly that you can offer accurate interpretations and solve problems no one else can. Now I will offer you what I offered the others: if you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple, wear a gold chain around your neck, and ascend in rank and privilege to be the third-highest-ranking ruler in the kingdom.

Daniel: Keep the gifts for yourself, or else award them to another. That is up to you. Still, I will agree to read the writing on the wall and tell you what it means.

O king, the Most High God gave sovereignty, greatness, honor, and splendor to your predecessor, Nebuchadnezzar. God made him so great and powerful that all peoples, regardless of their heritage, nationality, or language, trembled in fear before him. He did as he pleased: executing or sparing, honoring or shaming anyone as he wished. But there came a point when his heart was so proud and his spirit so haughty that he acted arrogantly; he lost his royal throne and was stripped of his royal honors. He was driven away from all that is human, and he took on the base instincts of an animal; he lived in the company of wild donkeys and bent over to eat grass like the oxen; every night the dew of heaven fell heavy on his body and made him wet until he learned his lesson and acknowledged that the Most High God is the true sovereign over all earthly kingdoms, and He grants authority to anyone He wishes.

But even though you knew all this, you, Belshazzar, his descendant, have followed in his ways and not lived humbly. On the contrary, you have risen up against the true Lord of heaven. By demanding that the sacred vessels from His temple be brought before you and having you, your officials, your wives, and your concubines drink from them, you have issued a challenge you cannot win. You have made toasts and offered praise to the idols crafted in silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—idols which cannot see you, hear you, or know anything at all. And you have failed to honor in all you do the one True God who holds the breath of life in the palm of His hand and makes possible all your days. He is the one who sent this hand and inscribed this message on the wall, and this is what the inscription says: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN.”

Here is what these words mean: MENE: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end; TEKEL: You have been weighed on the scales and found defective; PERES: Your kingdom has been divided and handed over to the Medes and Persians.”

True to his word, Belshazzar gave the order and Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and the king proclaimed that he ascend in rank and privilege to be the third-highest-ranking ruler in the kingdom.

That very night, under the cloak of darkness, Belshazzar, the Chaldean king of Babylonia, was killed. Then Darius the Mede, in his 62nd year, gained control of the kingdom.

The Book of Daniel, Chapter 5 (The Voice)

When asked what was the most important commandment of all, or, what does God really ask of us, Yeshua quoted the "Shema" passage from the Torah: "Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord alone, and you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' He then said: “This is the first commandment" (Mark 12:29-30, quoting Deut. 6:4-5).

The Hebrew word shema (שׁמע) means "listen," so the most important commandment is to hear the truth that the Lord is our God, the Lord alone... Other things may compete for our attention, but what is most essential for us to believe and to know is that the Lord is your God, which, incidentally, is the very first of the Ten Commandments (Exod. 20:2).

The Shema is the call to intellectually and emotionally connect with God as the most important and precious person in your life. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart" is the invitation to relate to God on the basis of his great love for you, and faith is your heart's response that receives that love with all of your being. That is the goal of teshuvah, or "repentance," after all: turning to God to find life in his love. Knowing God's heart is your very reason for being; it is the most sacred concern of your life.

Generally speaking, we must quiet our hearts to "make room" to listen, and that implies a measure of self-forgetfulness. To listen well we let go of our need to be in control and then receive what is said in humility. Listening to God honors his presence, trusts his authority, and surrenders to his care. Even in our troubles and our anguish (and especially in those times) our first duty is to quiet our hearts and listen, as it says: "He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity" (Job 36:15).

It is written: “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19), yet we are often just the opposite: slow to hear, quick to speak, and quick to wrath. However, in the midst of our struggles we must be careful to heed the questions the Spirit speaks from out of the whirlwind, as righteous Job did: "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Where is the path to the source of light? Where is the home of the east wind?" "Do you know the laws of the heavens, or can you set up their rule over the earth?" (Job 38). Job was astonishingly humbled by hearing such words, so much so that he finally exclaimed: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. You asked, 'Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?' It is I - but I spoke of things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me... I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my eyes. I abhor myself; I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance" (Job 42:2-6).

Job's friends, however, had not believed as Job had - that is, they had not seriously listened to God's voice nor faithfully searched for him in the midst of their anguish. Theirs was a “second hand” suffering. Perhaps they had never tasted the dregs of the cup of tribulation as did Job but they still wished to hold to a form of godliness. Their grave error, however, was that they presumed to know the truth when in fact they were impostors, "theological professors" who were too busy rationalizing their own preconceptions to offer any genuine remedy or true comfort to their suffering friend. The Lord listened to Job in his plight and took him seriously, however, because Job was a man of real faith, and he respected the ambivalence that Job felt within his heart, namely that God loved him dearly and yet allowed inexplicable troubles to besiege him - for that was the essence of his struggle, after all, a struggle not to let go of his love for God but to cling to it despite the harrowing loss and destruction of his world (Job 2:10).

Even though he never was given an intellectual explanation for his suffering, Job received something far better, namely the direct revelation of the One who made all things by the hand of his glory. And that is the hope we likewise hold, to one day see our Lord face to face, to behold Him in his beauty and glory forever and ever. We do not need explanations or rationalizations for why we are sometimes vexed with suffering as much as we need the will to endure and to keep believing. And may it please our Lord to help us persevere and remain faithful when we are tested. Amen.

Thou Art the God

“And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.” (2 Kings 19:15)

Good King Hezekiah was in what seemed a hopeless situation. The mighty armies of the Assyrian empire had been sweeping through the surrounding countries in an orgy of destruction and plunder, and now were at the gates of Jerusalem, demanding its surrender. Grossly outnumbered, the choice seemed either to capitulate or die!

But there was one other choice—Hezekiah could pray! The blasphemous Rabshakeh gloated that none of the gods of the other nations had been able to save them from the Assyrians...but that was beside the point. These other gods were mere personifications of natural processes, possibly energized by evil spirits, but all of these had been created in the first place by Hezekiah’s God. “For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens” (Psalm 96:5). And that was true of Assyria’s gods as well. All ancient pagan religions were evolutionary religions, rejecting the concept of true creation and a true Creator God.

Hezekiah knew the true God who had made heaven and Earth, and he could pray in reliance on His word. God could dispatch and empower just one of His mighty angels in answer to Hezekiah’s believing prayer and thus destroy the great Assyrian host in a single night! “And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand:...So Sennacherib king of Assyria, departed” (2 Kings 19:35-36).

This God—maker of heaven and Earth—is still on His throne and can still hear and answer the prayers of those who call on His name. HMM

Put A Mark On The Foreheads

The Bible references several places where people received a mark on their foreheads. Was it good to have such a mark or not? Let’s take a look. He said to him, “Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”  Ezekiel 9:4 God revealed to Ezekiel the idolatrous sins of 70 leaders along with many others in the temple. They deceived themselves thinking they were hiding something from the Lord. Then the Lord said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the leaders of Israel are doing with their idols in dark rooms? They are saying, ‘The Lord doesn’t see us; he has deserted our land!’” Ezekiel 8:12 Continuing, another 25 men turned their backs to the sanctuary, bowed low to the ground, and worshiped the sun! Many were guilty of breaking the first 2 commandments. You shall have no other Gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything. These people thought they could pull the wool over God’s eyes. But they didn’t. What’s even worse is, they were doing their detestable things in God’s temple. Therefore, I will respond in fury. I will neither pity nor spare them. And though they cry for mercy, I will not listen.” Ezekiel 8:18 Check out this related post called Punishment from God Because of Sin.

Preparing to Put a Mark on the Foreheads

God had men (probably angels) with weapons appointed to punish the city. And He had another man dressed in linen ready to put a mark on people’s foreheads. - Six men soon appeared from the upper gate that faces north, each carrying a deadly weapon in his hand. - With them was a man dressed in linen, who carried a writer’s case at his side. - They all went into the Temple courtyard and stood beside the bronze altar. Ezekiel 9:2

Before the judgment began, the Shekinah glory of God rose up between the cherubim. Then it moved to the entrance of the temple where the men were. There the Lord spoke to the man dressed in linen. He told him to put a mark on the foreheads of those who hadn’t turned away from the Lord. Then He turned to the six carrying deadly weapons giving them the following instructions. Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all . . . Ezekiel 9:5

References in Revelation

Other places in the Bible also tell about people receiving a mark on their foreheads. We find other references to it in the book of Revelation. In chapter 7, an angel temporarily stopped 4 others from destroying the land and sea. First, the 144,000 from the tribes of Israel needed to receive a mark or seal on their foreheads. “Wait! Don’t harm the land or the sea or the trees until we have placed the seal of God on the foreheads of his servants.” And I heard how many were marked with the seal of God—144,000 were sealed from all the tribes of Israel. Revelation 7:3-4 In the 9th chapter, after the 5th angel blew his trumpet, the stinging locusts went into action. They were told not to harm the grass or plants or trees, but only the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. Revelation 9:4 Also, keep in mind that Satan tries to counterfeit everything God does. During the tribulation, the Antichrist will require the mark of the beast placed on foreheads or the right hand. He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark. Revelation 13:16-17

Difference Between God's Mark and Satan's

According to what we have read in the scripture, those given a mark from God signified safety. But, eternal torment goes to those who receive the mark of the beast. Anyone who worships the beast and his statue or who accepts his mark on the forehead or on the hand must drink the wine of God’s anger. They will be tormented with fire and burning sulfur . . . forever and ever. Revelation 14:9-11  Let’s end on a more positive note. Those of us living for Christ right now have something better than a mark on our foreheads. We have the seal of the Holy Spirit. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. The Eschaton: A Timeline of Events

Part Three

The Seven Vials

         *The Seven Vials will be poured out sequentially over a period of 3½ years; just as with the Trumpets, the Vials are sequential, and the effects of each may overlap with the others.

      •1st Vial: Painful Sores on all who have the Mark (Revelation 16:2)

      •2nd Vial: The Entire Sea becomes Blood (Revelation 16:3)

      •3rd Vial: All Fresh Water becomes Blood (Revelation 16:4-6)

      •4th Vial: Sun scorches the Earth and its People (Revelation 16:8-9)

      •5th Vial: Throne of the Beast covered in Painful Darkness (Revelation 16:10-11)

      •6th Vial: The Euphrates Dries Up

         *The Antichrist assembles the armies of  the earth, and takes advantage of the dried up Euphrates to allow the kings of the East to march with him.  They stage in the valley of Migeddo and lay seige to Jerusalem in a last effort to annihilate the Jews (Revelation 16:12-14, 16; cf Joel 3:9-16; Zechariah 14:2; Ezekiel 38). 

      •7th Vial: Thunder Storms with Massive 100lb Hailstones, plus the Greatest Earthquake in the History of the World

          *The earthquake will be global; it will break Babylon into three parts; it will topple all the cities on earth; it will level all the mountains and sink all the islands (Revelation 16:17-21).

The greatest destruction from the 7th Vial will occur at Babylon, the location of the Antichrist's throne and the capitol of his kingdom.  The city will be annihilated, which will devastate the economy of the Antichrist's kingdom (Revelation 17-18). 

[[Side Note on Babylon and The Antichrist:  I think "Babylon" is applied figuratively, not literally referring to the site of the ancient city of Babylon.  We don't know where exactly this will be, but I favor Joel Richardson's take on it: I believe the Antichrist will be the Islamic Mahdi, and the Antichrist's government will be a revived Muslim Caliphate, rather than a revived Roman Empire, and the one-world religion will be some form of Islam, perhaps a new form we haven't seen yet.  The "Babylon" mentioned here I believe is the city of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.   For more on this, I highly recommend reading Joel Richardson's books  "Islamic Antichrist," "Mid-East Beast," and "Mystery Babylon."]]  

The Return of the King

   --The Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 / Matthew 24:29-31 / Mark 13:24-27)

         *Jesus will call all believers to Himself, and we'll be instantly in our glorified resurrection bodies (1 Corinthians 15:50-54)

      •Jesus Returns as Conquering King, with all the Resurrected Saints at His side (Revelation 19:11-16).

      •Jesus destroys the enemy nations surrounding Israel on His way to rescue the remnants of the Jews in Jerusalem (Isaiah 63:1-6; cf Zechariah 9) 

     •Jesus ascends the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem

          *The Mount of Olives splits in two, creating a way of escape for the Jews trapped in Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4-5). 

   --The Battle of Armaggeddon (Zechariah 14 / Joel 3 / Ezekiel 38-39 / Revelation 19)

      •Jesus meets the Antichrist and his massive army in the Valley of Migeddo outside Jerusalem, and utterly lays waste to them (Revelation 19:15-21).

      •All of the Jews saved by Jesus will turn to Him with their whole hearts, acknowledging Him as Messiah and King, fulfilling the prophecy that all Israel would be saved.  They will be welcomed to live under Jesus' rule (Romans 11:26-27; cf Jeremiah 23:5-6 / Isaiah 10:20-23 / Zechariah 9:14-17).

      •The Antichrist and False Prophet are seized and thrown alive into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 19:20).

      •Satan is seized and bound, then sealed in the Bottomless Pit (Revelation 20:1-3).

      •The Lord sends out a plague into all the nations that served the Beast.  The survivors among the nations will surrender to the Lord (Zechariah 14:12, 15-16)

         *Although it isn't explicitly stated, I believe that this plague will kill only the people who took the Mark of the Beast; the small amount of people from the nations who survived the Tribulation, who never accepted Jesus, but never worshipped the Beast or took the Mark are the survivors mentioned in Zechariah 14.   They will be brought to stand before the Lord in Jerusalem, where He will divide the sheep from the goats.  The sheep will be permitted to live under Jesus' rule, provided they surrender to Him and acknowledge Him as King (just like the remnant of the Jews); the goats will be cast into Hell. (Matthew 25:31-46)

      •The Lord establishes His Kingdom, taking His rightful place on David's Throne in Jerusalem.  Jesus will rule the whole world as King; Israel will be the dominant nation, and all other nations will serve them (Ezekiel 34:23-24 / Zechariah 8, 14:9, 16-19 / Isaiah 2:2-4, 9:6-7 / Revelation 20:4-6)

   --The Judgement Seat of Christ

      •The Lord will judge the faithful who are now Resurrected; He will judge them not for sins, but for their faithfulness in obeying the Lord during their earthly lives, their diligence in pursuing God's call on their lives, and on witnessing for Christ (1 Corinthians 5:10 / 2 Corinthians 3:12-15 / Revelation 22:12)

   --The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

      •A grand feast celebrating the wedding of the Bride (the Church) to Christ; we will never be apart again, and we'll be bound together in love forever (Revelation 19:6-9)  

[[As with the Judgement Seat of Christ, the timing of the Marriage Supper isn't clear; I speculate that it will occur after the Judgement Seat, and before the commencement of the Millennial Kingdom]]

   --The Millennial Kingdom

      •The Kingdom will last for 1,000 years.  Jesus rules the earth as King (Revelation 20:6)

         *All who were Raptured at the Lord's return exist in their glorified bodies (which are physical, powerful, and immortal).  We will no longer be married or given in marriage, and so we will no longer have children.  We will rule the earth along with Jesus (Matthew 22:30 / Philippians 3:20-21 / 1 John 3:2 / 1 Corinthians 15 / Revelation 20:4-6)

         *All who survived the Tribulation and were permitted by the Lord to live in His Kingdom at His return will exist as natural humans, just as we all are now.  They will continue marrying and having children (Isaiah 65:18-23; Ezekiel 36:37-38 / Revelation 20:7-8). 

         *The earth is healed from the damage done to it during the Tribulation.  The curse laid down by God after the Fall will be lifted.  The enmity between animals and humans will be gone; animals will no longer harm humans, nor each other.  The earth will yield its strength to men again, making farming easy.  Women will no longer suffer in childbirth; having children will be easy, which will lead to a population explosion.  Everyone will have enough, and no one will suffer lack.  There will be no more war or fighting anywhere on the earth.  The world will be a genuine utopia for a thousand years.   All the nations will go to Israel once per year to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles (Romans 8:18-22 / Isaiah 11, 65:18-25 / Micah 4:1-5 / Ezekiel 36:33-36, 40-48 / Zechariah 14:16-19)

   --The Final Rebellion

      •Satan is released from his prison. He will go about the whole earth and tempt all the natural humans who were born during the Millennial Age.  Satan will succeed in drawing away a huge number of those people, causing them to rebel against Jesus and attempt to overthrow His Kingdom (Revelation 20:7-8).

         *The rebel army will march on Jerusalem and surround it, and then God will annihilate them all (Revelation 20:9).

          *Satan will be caught again, and this time thrown into the Lake of Fire alongside the Antichrist and the False Prophet.  God will seal them in there permanently, where they will be punished day and night, forever.  Satan will never again harm anyone (Revelation 20:10). 

   --The Great White Throne Judgement (Revelation 20:11-15)

         *All of the people who died in their sins from all of human history, who have been waiting in Hell this whole time, will be resurrected and brought before the Lord God for judgement.  Also, all the rebels from the Millennial Kingdom that followed Satan will be there.  They will be sentenced to a degree of punishment in the Lake of Fire that fits exactly the degree of wickedness that was present in their life.  "Death" and "Hell" are thrown in to the Lake of Fire as well, indicating that no one will ever again enter Hell, and no one will ever again die; the number of those who are in the Lake of Fire after the White Throne Judgement will never be added to.  The Lake will be sealed. 

[[I speculate that at this point, all of the faithful from the Millennial Kingdom will be given glorified Resurrection bodies just like those who took part in the First Resurrection; the Bible isn't clear about when that will happen]]

The New Heaven and New Earth (Revelation 21-22:1-5)

      •The Lord will make a brand new planet for us to live on (and I think "new heaven" could mean a brand new universe as well). 

         *The New Earth will not have an ocean.  There will be no sun, and no moon, and no day-night cycle.  It will be daytime all the time.  It will be a perfect paradise, where there will be no death, no suffering at all.  

         *The New Jerusalem will be a breathtaking masterpiece made from precious materials.  It will be huge, stretching more than 1,300 miles long, 1,300 miles wide, and 1,300 miles high.  The glory of God Himself will be in the city, and it will shine out, lighting the whole planet.  

         *There will be nations on the new planet, indicating that we will live not only in the city, but also all over the new world.  There will never be anything evil on the new earth; no sin, no darkness, no corruption.  We will live for the rest of forever in perfect peace with each other, enjoying God's magnificent company. Every day will be an adventure, every moment as exhilarating as the first; exciting, fun, and fulfilling, with no depression, sadness, stress, or boredom.  

Revelation 22:3-5

"No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever."

So, you know how there are 7 trumpets/7 seraphs. Trumpets 2, 5, and 6 are confirmed in the Owari no Seraph timeline. That leaves 4 trumpets/seraphs left...

3 confirmed seraph gene carriers are Kimizuki, Yoichi, and Mika who have yet to awaken officially.... but... that leaves one more trumpet/seraph.... but who could that last seraph be..?

I personally think... it could be.... Shinya Hīragi.

This may sound really strange... but so far he’s the most likely candidate to be the final unconfirmed seraph.

It has been mentioned in the OnS storyline that seraphs are weapons of mass destruction and that part of the Seraph of the End project is to be able to control these seraphs in order to use them as weapons.

So what makes Shinya of all characters a likely candidate?

In the light novel series Catastrophe at Sixteen, Shinya’s backstory is explained more. He was a child who was put up against other children to fight for a bride (mahiru). Shinya as a result came up on top, but killed many others in the process and even mentioned to be almost desensitized to killing. (Which is super sad..) This would make him a good candidate as he is a strong fighter and is already desensitized to killing, therefore as a seraph, he won’t feel as much pain, regret, or guilt after he snaps out of his seraph form. It would also make sense for why that organization pitted a bunch of supposedly random kids up against each other to weed out the strongest. Maybe all the kids also had a seraph gene potentially....

Circumstances around Shinya have always been noted as... odd... one big example was when Shinya and the others in Guren’s squad died in the light novels. Guren used the seraph of the end project to revive them from the dead, however, Shinya’s revival is the only one who has gotten comments from other characters as “odd.” Sure, Guren using the seraph of the end project to revive his good friends makes sense, but since he was a big contributor to the project, what if he knew about Shinya’s potentially secret seraph gene and maybe even used his seraph gene to heal his body...? That would make all the comments about how Shinya’s revival was odd make a bit more sense.

In one chapter of the manga (the specific chapter number is slipping my mind....) I believe it was after the Shinoa squad strayed from the moon demon company, but I remember it being odd at first that Guren took Shinya captive (maybe that’s not the best word...) and locked him in a cell. I remember thinking this was a strange occurrence especially since Guren and Shinya are supposedly good friends, but now that I think about this potential theory, it would make sense that Guren would isolate Shinya and not his other friends. I believe this scene occurred after Yuu went full seraph and defeated the 5th trumpet and Abaddon. After that specific event, why would Guren lock Shinya up? Maybe because he knows about Shinya and how he may be a secret seraph gene carrier...

My last point is based on the description and actions of the 7 trumpets in the Book of Revelations I mentioned in my Seraph Mika theory. One specific trumpet, the fourth trumpet has this description: “Following the sounding of the fourth trumpet, a third of the light that shines from the Sun, moon, and stars becomes dark from the celestial bodies being "struck." This catastrophe causes complete darkness for a third of the day, even through night hours. This is the final trumpet that sounds before the three woes, also known as the fifth, sixth, and seventh trumpets.” This would make sense because this specific trumpet is a trumpet that sounds before the three woes/the final three trumpets, which in a way is signaling the beginning of the end. So it would be understandable to keep this specific seraph a secret. More evidence to support this is how Mahiru, Guren, and Shinya have been tied to the Sun, Moon, and Stars. The Sun, Moon, and Stars are also specifically mentioned in the description of the fourth trumpet. It’s also good to note that Shinya’s crest on his uniform (the thing that hangs right below the uniform’s collar) is in the shape of a moon, while guren’s could be the sun, which could be a subtle hint about Shinya’s secret seraph gene as well as Guren’s involvement in the project. Sure the crest could easily be a sign of rank as kureto also has a moon crest... however, the rest of Guren’s squad does not have that crest/rank.... so why specifically Shinya? Could it be because he’s a Hīragi (maybe he was specifically adopted into the Hīragi family because of his secret)? Or could it be something else secret.... ?

This theory does not have as much evidence as the Seraph Mika one, but I still thought it was an interesting theory to share.

Another Origin for the Black Box

So there are a lot of theories going around that have connected MoM’s Black Box with the computational/theoretical term “black box”, which in very basic terms describes a device which receives information (an input) and then produces a response (an output). A lot of things can be a black box, like your TV remote that responds to the input of you clicking the power button and responds by turning on your TV. The human brain (kinda like Brain in KHUX *cough, cough*) can even be considered a black box, as it similarly receives signals and then reacts accordingly. 

While I do believe a lot can come from considering this connection, I want to suggest another inspiration for MoM’s black box, one that actually comes from Christianity…

Before I delve further into this theory, I want to note that Christian symbolism seems to be something Nomura has always been interested in for developing KH’s story. For instance, there is a big emphasis on 3 or a trinity of persons (as in the Holy Trinity). There is also the importance of the numbers 7 and 13, two numbers that are largely important in the Bible and Christianity in general (I’ll talk more about these numbers later). There may also be other religious symbolism in KH, but examining those symbols deserve their own posts.

Then, of course, there is the Book of Prophecies, whose name and purpose seems very similar to the infamous Book of Revelations contained in the Chrisitian Bible. 

As the name suggests, the Book of Revelations details how the apocalypse will come about, including how and what will trigger Jesus’ second coming.

It is said in the Book of Revelations that Jesus will appear after the Seven Seals secure the book or scroll that contains knowledge only known by God. It is said that only the “Lion of Judah” and the “Lamb having seven horns and seven eyes” will be able to unseal the scroll and read its contents.

Each seal triggers a different event. The first 4 trigger the arrival of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, the 5th the arrival of martyrs dressed in white robes, the 6th natural disasters,  and the 7th bring about the 7 angels with trumpets which signal the end of the world and the arrival of Jesus.

Ok… So what does this scroll have anything to do with Kingdom Hearts? Or the Black Box for that matter?

Well, the first thing we should consider are the seven seals which must first be opened to access the scroll. Does that sound kinda familiar?

Well that’s because the scroll may be reminding you of the notches on the Black Box (13 in total) which need to be unlocked before the contents of the box can be accessed. It should also be noted that in KH 3, the Black Box is connected with Pandora’s Box (Remember that this happens early on in Olympus. For more context, you can look at my theory on this connection here), which is said to bring about havoc and destruction to the world when it is opened, similar to how breaking the seals of the scroll will cause devastation.

Of course, one major difference between the Black Box and the scroll is the difference in the number of barriers; one has 13 while the other has 7 and these numbers are each other's stark opposites in Christianity and KH.

I would like to remind everyone that in Kingdom Hearts it seems that the symbolism behind the numbers 7 and 13 has been switched. Let’s remember that in the epilogue, when Eraqus starts the new chess game, he gives Xehanort 7 gold pieces (the “dark” pieces) and himself 13 white pieces (the “light” pieces).

Thus because of this change, I would suggest that the 13 notches then can be synonymous with the 7 seals.

Another noteworthy thing is that the seven seals will be opened by a “lion” and a “lamb”. The lion symbolism in KH has been important since the introduction of No Name, which features a chimera figure which is both a lion and a goat. Moreover, people speculate that MoM’s animal will be a lion based on this keyblade and the fact that MoM’s suggested sin, Pride (or Superbia like the “Super-X” on the Black Box), is represented by the lion.

Ok, so we’ve figured out who this lion could bo. So who’s the lamb?

To answer that question we’ll have to turn to another keyblade, principally one that is only featured in DDD, End of Pain.

As you can see, End of Pain is structurally very similar to No Name. Indeed, much like No Name, End of Pain is one of the few keyblades with the Gazing Eye. End of Pain even has an animal on it, although it is more obscured than the chimera on No Name.

Blowingoffsteam2 wrote a theory comparing these two keyblades here and they suggest how the animal may in fact be a ram. They analyze the meaning of this animal in terms of the zodiac (the ram represents the first sign in the zodiac, Aires. Curiously, Sora, who’s birthday is March 28th, is an Aires) and greek mythology.

I’d like to, however, also consider that a ram is just a sheep. And well.. A lamb is also just a sheep…

(also *cough, cough* RAM as in random access memory has to do with computing language, similar to the concept of a the black box just saying)

Also in Christianity, the lamb is meant to symbolize Jesus, who sacrificed himself for the sins of mankind. You could even say that Jesus died to “End” the “Pain” of our sins…’’

With all of this in mind, if MoM is the Lion and the original wielder of No Name, then the Lamb would need to be the wielder of End of Pain.

This is where it gets tricky because End of Pain is a keyblade that both Sora and Riku can wield, so it is hard to say which one of them is truly the Lamb. I suppose we can assume that its Sora since, ya know, he’s the main character, but it could also be a fusion of both Sora and Riku (for instance, look at the butterfly charm on End of Pain. Butterflies represents two halves working in symmetry, almost like a heart. Moreover, the butterfly is made of both purple and orange, two colors making one form.) 

With all of this context in mind, my hypothesis is that the black box can only be opened through a combined effort between MoM and Sora (or MoM and Riku… or MoM and some Sora/Riku hybrid *cough,* Yozora). Moreover, if and when this box is opened, it will bring about disastrous omens and possibly even some sort of rebirth, like Jesus’ second coming.

I’m offering this as mere speculation since there isn’t very hard evidence to suggest I’m right, but it’s strange how much things from the Christian ideology of the 7 seals seems to match up with KH lore. Guess we gotta wait until DDD 2 for some real answers.

1st      resurrection[36]

 During      the 1st half of the last1week, during the reign of the beast, all those      who refused to worship the beast either died[37]      or fled[38]      and eventually are resurrected or transformed by the 1st resurrection.[39]      It means that all those who are left on the earth without being raised by      the 1st resurrection, must have received the mark of the beast666. Repentance      is impossible for those who have received the mark of the beast666.[40] During the 1st      half of the last1week, the prostitute killed most of those who refused      the mark of the beast666, so after the 1st resurrection, there cannot be      any unbelievers who survived after rejecting the mark of the beast666 on      the earth. The saints who fled to the prepared place[41] in order to      reject the mark of the beast666 are recognized as the martyr witnesses[42], so all of      them are transformed and caught up into the air. Now there are only those      who have received the mark of the beast666 on the earth. I believe that      after the 1st resurrection, there will be no more saints who proclaim the      gospel or repentant people on the earth.

*At      the 7th seal, the 7th trumpet and the 7th bowl, lightning + sounds +      thunder + earthquake takes place in common. Lightning + Sounds + Thunder      + Earthquake comes from the throne.[44]      In other words, at the time of the 7th seal, the 7th trumpet and the 7th      bowl, the creatures come closer to the true throne of the true most holy      place.[45]      When creatures come to the throne, their sins are either extinguished or      they die.[46]

*The      veil to the holy place is opened before the creatures who draw near to      the throne for the annihilation of their sins. The atonement is going on      to take away sins in the creation world. The 7th seal is broken and the      incense for atonement is offered[47],      the 7th trumpet is sounded and the atonement begins[48],      the 7th bowl is poured out and the atonement for the true temple is      completed.[49]      Then the atonement for Hades, the altar of burnt offering, begins.[50]

Rev.9:13 The sixth angel  sounded. I heard a voice from the horns of the golden altar which is before  God,

Rev.9:14 saying to the sixth angel who had one trumpet, "Free  the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!"

Rev.9:15 The four angels were freed who had been prepared for that  hour and day and month and year, so that they would kill one third of  mankind.

Assuming that the beast comes out after 1/3  of the world's population is exterminated by the 200,000,000 horsemen after  the release of the 4 angels, the beast will regain its lost power with at  least the death of the 2,000,000,000 people.

If 'death' is given power over the earth1/4 means  that 1/4 of the world's population is exterminated, and therefore, if 1/4 of  the world's population is exterminated by death before 1/3 of the world's  population is exterminated by the 200,000,000 horsemen, more people will die  before the beast regains its power. However, since death and Hades kill  people of the earth1/4 and not people1/4, the number of people on the earth1/4  that will be exterminated may be less than people1/4.

If the earth1/4 harmed by death and Hades is  a densely populated area, it is likely that more people than 1/4 of the world's  population live on the earth1/4. Then more than 1/4 of the world's population  will die. The combined population of China and India alone is more than 2,700,000,000.

For ease of calculation, if we assume that people  of the earth1/4 die as people1/4 die, out of the world's 8,000,000,000  people, 2,000,000,000, 1/4, will die. After that, there will be 6,000,000,000  people left, and of those 6,000,000,000 people, 2,000,000,000 will die again,  1/3 of them. Therefore, after the death of 4,000,000,000 people, half of the  world's 8,000,000,000 people, the beast will regain its power.

Rev.6:3 When he opened the  second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come!"

Rev.6:4 Another came forth, a  red horse. To him who sat on it was given to take peace from the earth, and  that they should kill one another. There was given to him a great sword.

Rev.6:5 When he opened the third  seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come and see!" And  behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a balance in his hand.

Rev.6:6 I heard a voice in the  midst of the four living creatures saying, "A choenix of wheat for a  denarius, and three choenix of barley for a denarius! Don't damage the oil  and the wine!"

Rev.6:9 When he opened the fifth  seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for  the Word of God, and for the testimony of the Lamb which they had.

Rev.8:7 The first sounded, and  there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown on the  earth. One third of the earth was burnt up, and one third of the trees were  burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Rev.8:10 The third angel  sounded, and a great star fell from the sky, burning like a torch, and it  fell on one third of the rivers, and on the springs of the waters.

Rev.8:11 The name of the star is  called "Wormwood." One third of the waters became wormwood. Many  men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.

If those who die at the time of war at the 2nd  seal, famine at the 3rd seal, martyrdom at the 5th seal, extermination of  vegetation1/3 at the 1st trumpet, that is, extermination of food1/3, and extermination  of water1/3 at the 3rd trumpet, that is, extermination of drinking water  sources, are included, the beast will regain its power after more people die.

Assuming that the  world's population is 8 billion and that the death of the people of the earth1/4  as the death of the people1/4, 2 billion people die and 6 billion people  survive in the period of the 4th seal.

As the trumpets are  sounded, the earth1/3 is devastated, and many people die in the process.  After that, the 6th trumpet is sounded and people1/3 die. Assuming that among  the 6 billion people who survived the period of the 4th seal, not one person  died in the process of devastation of the earth1/3, 1/3 of 6 billion is 2  billion.

At the time of the  4th seal, 2 billion people died, and at the time of the 6th trumpet, 2  billion people died, so out of the first 8 billion people, 4 billion people  remain.

However, the death  of the people of the earth1/4 does not mean that people1/4 die. Also, many  people will die in the process of devastation of the earth1/3. Therefore,  many more people may have already died before the death of the people1/3.

In any case, after  the world's population is cut by half or less, the prostitute riding the  beast takes over the world. After the prostitute, the son of destruction,  takes control of the whole world, a massive slaughter on the saints begins.  There will be no great tribulation until the world's population is cut by  half or less.

They lived, and reigned with Christ for the thousand years. The rest of the dead didn't live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

[40] Rev.14:9 Another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a great voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead, or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared unmixed in the cup of his anger. He will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. They have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.

[41] Rev.12:6 The woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that there they may nourish her one thousand two hundred sixty days.

 Lev.16:12 He shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Yahweh, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil: and he shall put the incense on the fire before Yahweh, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the testimony, so that he will not die.

[47] Rev.8:3 Another angel came and stood over the altar, having a golden censer. Much incense was given to him, that he should add it to the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar which was before the throne. The smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand.

[48] Lev.16:16 and he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so he shall do for the Tent of Meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleanness. Russia and China pledge more cooperation as they look to prepare a Eurasian military opposition to the West

China and Russia agree to boost ties in opposition to West

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday that Beijing would “strengthen strategic cooperation” with Moscow during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

In comments reported by the RIA Novosti news agency, Wang said Beijing and Moscow would “provide each other with strong support.”

The meeting took place during a two-day visit by Lavrov to China. The two powers have improved their diplomatic ties since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, declaring a “no limits” partnership.

The West is “implementing unlawful sanctions toward a number of states, Russia is among them of course. This policy is starting to be actively applied toward [China] as well,” Lavrov said, referencing efforts by the US to restrict China’s access to key US-made technologies.

Plan to launch Eurasian security ‘dialogue’

Russia and China agreed to strengthen security cooperation across Eurasia to counter US and Western influence. Lavrov said such a move had been put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that the two countries had agreed to “start a dialogue with the involvement of our other like-minded people on this issue.”

“For a long time, there was a Euro-Atlantic security structure in the form of NATO, of course, as well as the OSCE, but it is striking itself out from the list of relevant structures within which it is possible to conduct meaningful negotiations and agree on something based on a balance of interests,” Lavrov said.

A Russian-promoted, Eurasian security dialogue would help set the stage for various biblical prophecies to be fulfilled which involve a Russian-led force invading the end time European daughter of Babylon.

Furthermore, as I have long written, the biblical reality is that Russia and China will work together militarily (e.g. Revelation 16:12-16).

Here is something from by free online book, Lost Tribes and Prophecies: What will happen to Australia, the British Isles, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and the United States of America?, discussing the three woes along with Russia and China:

In the last verse of Revelation 8 (verse 13) the word woe is repeated three times and is later connected to three angels and three trumpet blasts which correspond to the blowing of the 5th, 6th, and 7th trumpets.

The first woe (5th trumpet) is described in Revelation 9:1-11. It involves a demonically-led force which causes torment (perhaps involving a plague of germ or chemical warfare) for those not having the seal of God (Revelation 9:4)—thus those of the 144,000 who were sealed in Revelation 7:4 are not tormented by this.

This woe looks to involve at least some of the European King of the North’s military and is consistent with something from Daniel:

44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. (Daniel 11:44)

Looking at this verse, what could be north and east of the European Beast power?

Russia, for one, which is both in Europe and Asia. Daniel suggests that it, and some of its allies, will face some of the fury of the King of the North as part of the first woe.

Despite some erroneous claims, Russia, itself, is NOT the prophesied “King of the North,” but it is prophetically pointed to as the power of “the far north” (cf. Ezekiel 38:6, 39:1-2).

Going on from the first woe comes the second woe:

12 One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed — by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. (Revelation 9:12-21)

Such a massively large army was not possible to be put together when Jesus had John pen the Book of Revelation in the 1st century. In the 21st century, however, it is possible, and that army would be expected to include Chinese, Indian, Russian, and other Asian peoples.

The European Beast empire will not last, but will fear what is coming.

Notice also the following from the Hebrew scriptures:

2 … A people come, great and strong, The like of whom has never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them, Even for many successive generations.

3 A fire devours before them, And behind them a flame burns; The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, And behind them a desolate wilderness; Surely nothing shall escape them. 4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like swift steeds, so they run. 5 With a noise like chariots Over mountaintops they leap, Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble, Like a strong people set in battle array.

6 Before them the people writhe in pain; All faces are drained of color. (Joel 2:2-6)

During the second woe, the 200,000,000 man army looks to tie in with Joel 2:2 which discusses some of that army’s expected actions.

Before going further, understand that current projects like China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Europe’s Global Gateway are looking to connect Asia, Europe, and the Middle East in ways that look to be building infrastructure that a 200 million man army would use in order to get to Europe and the Middle East.

Peoples prophetically called Medes are also shown to destroy the final Babylon according to both Isaiah and Jeremiah:

1 The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw…

17 “Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, Who will not regard silver; And as for gold, they will not delight in it. 18 Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces, And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb; Their eye will not spare children. 19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:1, 17-19)

11 Make the arrows bright! Gather the shields! The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes. For His plan is against Babylon to destroy it, Because it is the vengeance of the Lord, The vengeance for His temple. (Jeremiah 51:11)

The fact that there are multiple kings of the Medes indicates that powers involved in this end time confederation represent multiple governments. This would seem to include Russia, Belarus, and likely Crimea, Donbas, and some others in Ukraine, some in Moldova, perhaps some from the nation of Georgia, and some in Iran, etc.

Anciently, “Darius the Mede” (Daniel 5:31) conquered old Babylon—modern “Medes” will help do the same to the end-time daughter of Babylon.

The following passages seem also to apply:

8 “Move from the midst of Babylon, Go out of the land of the Chaldeans; And be like the rams before the flocks. 9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon An assembly of great nations from the north country, And they shall array themselves against her; From there she shall be captured. Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior; None shall return in vain. (Jeremiah 50:8-9)

Those who believe the Bible should leave the midst of end-time Babylon by then. Certainly, the above “north country” includes Russia, but other passages clearly point to others from Asia being involved (Jeremiah 51:27-29).

Notice some of what will happen to the coming European Babylonian Beast power led by a power from the farthest parts of the earth (Russia is the nation that is the farthest east and close to being the farthest north nation):

22 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, a people comes from the north country, And a great nation will be raised from the farthest parts of the earth.

23 They will lay hold on bow and spear; They are cruel and have no mercy; Their voice roars like the sea; And they ride on horses, As men of war set in array against you, O daughter of Zion.”

24 We have heard the report of it; Our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, Pain as of a woman in labor. 25 Do not go out into the field, Nor walk by the way. Because of the sword of the enemy, Fear is on every side. 26 O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us. (Jeremiah 6:22-26)

41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north, And a great nation and many kings Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth. 42 They shall hold the bow and the lance; They are cruel and shall not show mercy. Their voice shall roar like the sea; They shall ride on horses, Set in array, like a man for the battle, Against you, O daughter of Babylon.

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them, And his hands grow feeble; Anguish has taken hold of him, Pangs as of a woman in childbirth.  (Jeremiah 50:41-43)

The “great nation” from the “farthest parts of the earth” includes Russia. There are also nations that will be confederate with it. Those would also include China and other nations in Asia, and particularly in the Far East. The “Daughter of Babylon” Jeremiah referred to is not ancient Babylon, but the end-time European power. The “kings … from the ends of the earth” seem to include South Africa and India, which are BRICS nations which have also conducted military drills with Russia and China.[i] Some nations in South America may also be involved as they seem to be part of the “ends of the earth.” Consider that Brazil and Russia already have a variety of military agreements.[ii] When the “daughter of Babylon” is in the process of falling, many will abandon supporting it. Jeremiah 50 is part of the second woe.[iii]

The second woe, according to scripture, ends 3 ½ days after the two witnesses are killed per Revelation 11:7-14. That is quickly followed by the third woe and the blowing of the 7th trumpet (Revelation 11:14-15).

Jesus returns with this trumpet (1 Thessalonians 4:16) which is also the last trumpet when Christians rise up (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52). While that is comforting for Christians (1 Thessalonians 4:18), this angers the nations (Revelation 11:15-18).

So, the nations that gathered in Armageddon to fight the forces of the Beast, despite issues between them, will unite to fight Jesus, Himself! This is also described in Zechariah 14 and Joel 3.

The third woe releases the seven last plagues (Revelation 15:1), with victorious Christians then pictured on the sea of glass (Revelation 15:2).

During the third woe, when God sends corrective punishments, because the non-Christians refused to repent:

9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:9)

Notice something else that happens during this third woe:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. (Revelation 16:12-16)

Forces from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean would be expected to gather related to ‘Armageddon’ as “the whole world” (Revelation 16:13-16) will be involved.

BRICS and the Woes of Revelation

The BRICS nations consist of Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa. In February of 2023, Russia, China, and South Africa held joint naval drills. In the Fall of 2022, India, Russia, and China held joint military exercises. Brazil also has a military cooperation agreement with Russia. The Book of Revelation uses the term woe three times in chapter 8 verse 13–those woes are then discussed in later chapters. Could the BRICS nations, along with the coming Babylonian European Beast power be involved in all three of the woes? Do the BRICS nations want to push aside the USA dollar? Is one of the woes tied to the rise of a 200,000,000 man army? Is there any connection to the second woe and the two witnesses? Repentance and the Trumpets of God

I recently posted about the “half hour” silence at the opening of the seventh seal.

Rev 8:1  And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

I wondered in that post if the “half hour” which can mean ”half a period of time” referred to the 1260 days or last half of Daniel’s 70th week.

If you read that post my belief is that the 1260 days or time, times and half of Daniel and Revelation refer to the time period from the crucifiction and resurrection of Christ and the destruction of Jerusalem, which was the half way point of Daniel’s 70th week, to His second coming and completion of the church.

Daniel 9 prophesies of the midpoint of 70th week.

Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate

What that would mean then is that seals 1-6 were opened by the time the temple was destroyed.  Specifically the 6th seal refers to the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem.

I will talk about the seals in another post.  I want to talk about the trumpets in this post.

The 7 trumpets then begin after the destruction of Jerusalem and when the 7th trumpet is sounded the church is completed.

Revelation 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.            

Rev 11:16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,              

Rev 11:17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.            

Rev 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.      

Rev 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

What would be fascinating about this if it is true is that the people sounding the trumpets  is the church.

A trumpet is an instrument that makes a noise when wind is blown through it by someone.  The same word for Spirit is the same word for wind.  When the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost it came as a mighty wind.

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

We are supposed to be God’s instruments.  When we are, He is blowing His Spirit through us and we become trumpets for Him sounding the alarm and calling to repent.

The goal of the trumpets is for repentance.

Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

Rev 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

Paul compares the sound of a trumpet to the voice of the church.

1 Corinthians 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

1Co 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

Strong’s G3341=repentance.  This verse about trumpets has a matching gematria of 3341.

Num 10:8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations

This is verse 3341.  Yes once we are saved we should love to obey God’s law.

Leveticus 20:22 Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.

Jesus told the church of Laodicea He will spue them out of His mouth.

Revelation 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Numbers 10:8 with a gematria of 3341 is verse number 3997.

This verse has a gematria of 3997 and speaks of a watchman-which is the church-blowing a trumpet to warn the sinner to repent.

Ezekiel 33:4 Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.

The trumpet that is being blown in Num 10:8 is one of the silver trumpets.  Silver is a picture of redemption.  The church has been redeemed.  We are a silver trumpet in God’s hand.

Strong’s H2689=trumpet

This familiar verse has a gematria of 2689.  Once God saves us, we should desire to follow His Law.

Pro 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

This is verse 2689.  The high priest, a type of Christ, wore a robe with pomegranites on it.

Exo 39:24 And they made upon the hems of the robe pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet and twined linen.

In Jewish tradition, the pomegranate is said to have 613 seeds in it matching the 613 laws of God or written torah.

The bride has temples like a pomegranate.

Sol 4:3 Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.

The temple is the side of the forehead.  We are to bind God’s laws to our foreheads.

Deu 6:8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

In revelation the 144,000 are sealed on their foreheads with the Holy Spirit who teaches us God’s laws.

Rev 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

So if we are the trumpets of God what are we saying.

The 5th and 6th trumpest are about the battle with “scorpions and serpents” which I have posted about a few times recently.  This is the spiritual war we face daily against our enemy.  We must be daily prepared for it and we must be edifying others to be prepared for it.  When we fall we must pick each other up.

In light of the war we are in as God’s people notice verse 3998.

Num 10:9 And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.

This verse has a gematria of 3998.

Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil He quoted scripture and was strengthened by the Holy Spirit.  We are to fight the devil through reliance on God’s word and our prayer to God for strength through His Spirit.

The second trumpet is about a “mountain burning with fire”.

Rev 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

There is one mountain that burned with fire in the bible-Mt Sinai where God entered into a marriage covenant with His people and gave His laws.

Deuteronomy 4:11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

The trumpet we are to sound is that once we are saved we should love God’s laws and obey  them, not cast them down and trample on them.   Jesus says if we love Him and are in covenant with Him we will obey His commandments.

The third trumpet is about a “great star from heaven, burning as a lamp”.

Rev 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters

The first “burning lamp” is used in the covenant of Abraham.

Genesis 15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

In the book of Revelation “stars from heaven” refers to the seed of Abraham.

Abraham’s promise from God was that his seed would be like the “stars of heaven”.

Genesis 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be

The star is called wormwood.

Rev 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Wormwood is used as a judgement for disobedience.

Jer 9:13 And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

Jer 9:14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

Jer 9:15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

Bitter waters speak of the adultery test.

Num 5:24 And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter.

The trumpet we are to sound is that as the children of Abraham we are to do the works of Abraham.  Abraham was the first person recorded to obey God’s laws.

Gen 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Joh 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

The 4th trumpet is on the sun, moon, and stars.

Rev 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

The sun, moon and stars were created for “signs”and “seasons”.  “Signs” mean signals.  “Seasons” mean God’s feast days.

Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

God’s feast days point to Christ and His work.  They are considered God’s appointments with us.

God criticized Israel for the way they celebrated His feasts.  He did this in context of telling them that their heart was far from Him and he called them a “harlot”.

Isa 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

Isa 1:21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.

I am not 100% sure on this message.  I believe the trumpet we are to sound is that we should be on God’s calendar meeting with Him on His feast days, celebrating what God has done for us in the spring feasts and looking forward to what Christ will do for us in the fall feasts.  The gentile church is so removed from the feasts.  There are head pastors leading churches that know nothing about them.

The first trumpet is about “hail and fire and blood cast to the earth”.  When you understand what the other trumpets are about the first one is easier to understand.

Rev 8:7  The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Hail and fire speaks of judgement.  It was the 7th plague on Egypt.  Revelation is all about the number 7.

“Blood cast to the earth” lands on trees and grass.  People are referred to as trees and grass throughout the bible.

2Ki 19:26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up

Psa 96:12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice

So you could see this as blood cast or sprinkled on people.  The first time and I believe only time this happens in the bible is with Moses and the covenant.

Exo 24:8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

Trumpets 1-3 all refer back to the covenants He made with His people.  Trumpet 4 is about the feasts and trumpets 5-6 are about the enemies attempt to have us walk away from God.  They are all about repentance and walking with Him.

A moment of heavenly silence

Today’s reading of the Scriptures from the New Testament is the 8th chapter of the book of Revelation:

When the Lamb cracked open the seventh and final seal, a great silence filled all heaven penetrating everything for about half an hour. Then I saw seven heavenly messengers, the ones who stand before God, receive seven trumpets.

An eighth messenger came and stood before the altar carrying a golden censer. He received a large portion of incense to complement the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that sits in front of the throne. From the hand of the eighth messenger, the smoke of the incense mixed with the prayers of God’s people and billowed up before God. The messenger filled the censer with fiery coals from the altar and cast it upon the earth, causing a great commotion of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The seven heavenly messengers raised the seven trumpets and prepared to sound them.

The first messenger sounded his trumpet, and a blast of hail and fire mixed with blood was cast down to the earth. As a result, one-third of the land was set ablaze, one-third of the trees were burned, and all the green grass was scorched.

The second messenger sounded his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, with bright flames of burning fire, was cast into the sea. As a result, one-third of the sea turned into blood, one-third of the living sea creatures died, and one-third of the ships were obliterated.

The third messenger sounded his trumpet, and a great star called Wormwood dropped out of heaven, flaming like a torch as it fell on one-third of the rivers and the springs. As a result, one-third of the waters turned bitter like the herb wormwood so that many people died from the poisonous bitter waters.

The fourth messenger sounded his trumpet, and one-third of the sun, one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars were darkened. As a result, one-third of their light flickered and failed. For one-third of the day, the sun did not shine; and likewise for one-third of the night, the moon and stars did not give their light.

Then I saw an eagle flying through midheaven, and I heard it cry with a loud voice.

Eagle: Woe, woe, woe—horror, disaster, and calamity—to the earth dwellers! The rest of the trumpet blasts from the last three messengers are about to sound.

The Book of Revelation, Chapter 8 (The Voice)

Today’s paired chapter of the Testaments is the 5th chapter of the book of Nehemiah about monetary issues and taxation that was crippling the Jews of Jerusalem and Nehemiah’s response:

As time went on a different kind of conflict arose—common men and their wives cried out against some of their fellow Jews.

Jews Without Land: Our families are large, and we need food so that along with our children, we will not starve. Let us have grain!

Jewish Landowners: As a result of the famine, we are pledging livelihood, even our fields, our vineyards, and our homes as a mortgage.

Other Jewish Landowners: We are borrowing money so that we can pay King Artaxerxes’ tax on our fields and vineyards because of the famine.

All the Jews: Even though we debtors are of the same people as our creditors—the same flesh, the same blood—and even though our children are the same as their children, we are raising this money for taxes by selling our children into slavery. In fact, some of our daughters are slaves already. We are helpless to do anything about it. Why? Because our fields and our vineyards now belong to our creditors!

When I heard this outcry, these charges filled me with anger. After reflecting over what to do, I determined to confront those responsible directly: the Jewish nobles and the officials who represented Araxerxes’ interests in Jerusalem.

Nehemiah: You are exploiting your own people by charging them interest!

And a great many people assembled to witness my sentencing of the leaders.

Nehemiah: At great expense we have been laboring to buy back our brothers and sisters, fellow Jews who have been enslaved to pagan nations. Now we discover that you are the ones selling them away in the first place—we are buying them from you!

There was nothing they could say; their silence confirmed their guilt.

Nehemiah: This thing you are doing is not good. Is it not good to walk and live our lives in fear of the awesomeness of our True God? Your actions cause our enemies, those pagan nations, to mock us. It is true that my brothers and I—even my followers—are lending money and grain to our poor brothers and sisters so that they can feed themselves and their families. But from this point forward we must stop charging interest. In fact, we must immediately return their collateral—fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses—and any interest of money, grain, new wine, and olive oil.

Jewish Nobles and Officials: We will give everything back. And in the future, nothing more will be demanded from them. We will do everything you have said.

I called the priests to join us and had these men make oaths before the gathering so that they would be held accountable to do what they promised. I shook out my robe.

Nehemiah: May the True God likewise shake out from his house and his property anyone who fails to keep his word. May he then be shaken out also, until he, too, is emptied.

Everyone who had gathered in our assembly to witness this praised the Eternal and gave their benediction saying, “So may it be.”

All the people did as they promised. As long as I had been appointed governor in Judah—for the 12 years from the 20th to the 32nd year of King Artaxerxes’ reign over the Persian Empire—no one in my family took a salary from the food tax the empire levied. Every governor who had come before me had exploited his authority and levied a stiff tax—a pound of silver a day—and taken food and wine to supply his own table, often using unmerciful servants to extract this payment. But my fear of the True God kept me from ever acting in the same way. (All my attention and resources were devoted to rebuilding the wall. Land acquisition was not the goal of my followers or me.) I went beyond that, however. I also supplied food for 150 Jews and officials—in addition to diplomats from the surrounding pagan nations. All were fed at my table at my expense: each day an ox, 6 of my best sheep, and some birds were prepared and served alongside a variety of wines that were resupplied every 10 days. Even with all of this expense and effort, I never demanded the food tax which would have been mine to claim as governor because I could see how hard life was for the people and what these demands would cost them.

Nehemiah: Remember me for the good I have done, my True God, for how I have served Your people.

The Book of Nehemiah, Chapter 5 (The Voice)

A note from The Voice translation:

Nehemiah is the picture of a benevolent ruler. As a Persian-appointed official, he has the right to exact a sizable tax on the people of Jerusalem. Previous governors have had special jars made for collecting grain and oil and fruit from the people. This food went to support the governor and all of his formal dinners. But Nehemiah does not exact this special tax because he realizes his people are already burdened by the Persians’ heavy taxes.

As Artaxerxes’ cupbearer, certainly Nehemiah is a wealthy man; therefore he has no need for additional resources from Jerusalem’s people. On his own, Nehemiah is able to regularly host all 150 of Jerusalem’s officials and frequent diplomats from other provinces, and the abundant meat and wine served at those functions proves that Nehemiah spares no personal expense. He manages to fulfill every duty assigned to him—those required of a Persian governor, and those required of a man of God.

When he said, "Live in me, and I will live in you" (John 15:4), he didn't insist you first be found worthy or good; no, he set no other condition than that of trust: "Now are you clean through the word which I speak" (John 15:3). The separation is gone; God has made the way past your shame. You are invited to come, so come just as you are, come without delay, but come trusting that you are entirely welcome because of who Yeshua is and what he has done for you...

O Lord, help us to live that life you so freely give.... help us to come.

Practicing Righteousness

“LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.” (Psalm 15:1-5)

Easy believism is Satan’s all-time deception, the idea that we can be right with God without a changed heart and life. David challenged this delusive doctrine by asking, “Who shall abide in the [LORD’s] tabernacle?” (Psalm 15:1), meaning who will dwell with the Lord in eternity. The answer affirms a true believer’s growing and fruitful practice: “He that doeth these things shall never be moved,” assuring one’s eternal security (v. 5a). When our Lord Jesus Christ saves a sinner from his sins, his heart is transformed as a new creation, unilaterally affecting his outward behavior (Ephesians 4:24). This involves a positive directional change—not perfectionism, but a true, germinating growth (Romans 7:25).

So, what outward changes are we talking about? A question/answer construct unpacks David’s answer, revealing what’s growing and what’s diminishing in the believer’s changed life in a 12-part response—six positive characteristics (v. 2, v. 4a-c) and six negative (v. 3, vv. 4d-5b).

The apostle John also challenged believers not to fall prey to this deception: “Let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous” (1 John 3:7). There’s nothing we can do to earn salvation, but a saved life practices righteousness. CM

At ‘Black Woodstock,’ an All-Star Lineup Delivered Joy and Renewal to 300,000

Woodstock was big and messy, thrilling and stirring — and summed up finally by Jimi Hendrix, whose festival-closing set included his towering, take-a-knee reading of the national anthem. It was an admixture of disaffection and patriotism, bold as love and black as hell. But Hendrix was one of the few black musicians at an event that has become a cultural touchstone for white America.

A hundred miles to the south of that sprawling rural rock ’n’ roll assembly, black folks were building their own musical commons. The Harlem Cultural Festival of that year, which would come to be known as “Black Woodstock,” had, on its surface, little in common with the upstate hootenanny. Held in Harlem at Mount Morris (what is now Marcus Garvey) Park, it was a self-consciously urban affair, a concert series rather than a one-off, and already in its third year. Co-sponsored by the New York City Parks Department and Maxwell House, the General Foods subsidiary, that year’s festival consisted of six free Sunday afternoon concerts held between June 29 and August 24. The total attendance was some 300,000 people strong.

With the Caribbean singer Tony Lawrence at its helm, the festival was a sustained, communal activity and cultural interaction where enterprising street vendors got what The New York Times referred to as their “legitimate hustle” on. A vibrant cross-section of city folk — brothers in dashikis (like Jesse Jackson, who spoke at one of the concerts), young sisters in smart shifts and older ones in church hats, men in fedoras and well-pressed, button-up shirts — all listened with a combination of focus and ease.

“The scale and the diversity of the audience” was a thing to behold, says Neal Ludevig, the curator and co-producer of this year’s 50th anniversary “Black Woodstock” event.

Iterations of the Harlem Cultural Festival were held in 1967 and 1968, but the 1969 events were the apex. Atop the rocks and down in the grassy field, they were showing up to watch a roll call of black popular music luminaries move through tight sets covering beloved repertoires. This was Harlem’s sonic playground, and it featured the likes of the gospel crossover sensation Edwin Hawkins, the blues icon B.B. King, the avant-garde jazz activists Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach, the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, the groovy black pop ambassadors The 5th Dimension, the Motown up-and-comers Gladys Knight and the Pips and the youthful Stevie Wonder. The comic vets Moms Mabley and Pigmeat Markham supplied the standup relief. And the crowds responded — looking on reverentially, dancing with one another around the edges of the park.

Photos from The Times’s archive capture the reverberations of an event that was a casual thing of beauty, where black folks moved en masse through the streets and into the park, improvisationally responding to one another, forming circles of joy and conviviality and reveling in outdoor leisure.

One shot from the 1967 festival stands out for its crispness and arresting power. It features a girl — donning high summertime attire, a sleeveless top and shorts, hair braided to the back — hugging the railing to the stage, leaning in — looking. She’s watching something before her. Someone is holding her attention, maybe dazzling her imagination.

Excerpts from the TV producer Hal Tulchin’s 40 hours of footage of the 1969 festival (which remain largely unseen) show a reverential crowd, keeping time with Nina Simone, the “High Priestess of Soul,” as she opened her four-song set on Aug. 17 with a new single, “Revolution.” It was a country-meets-Tin Pan Alley protest jam informing white folks that “The only way that we can stand in fact/Is when you get your foot off our back” — bluntly capturing the sentiment of the moment. (Simone closed out her performance by reading the fiery poem “Are You Ready, Black People?” The Last Poets’ David Nelson’s spoken-word call-to-action, asking of the crowd, “Are you ready to smash white things, to burn buildings?”)

Tensions had been running high in the city from spring into summer as the first anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination passed and 21 Black Panthers were indicted on charges of planning a bombing campaign across Manhattan to mark the occasion. The police even refused to provide security for the event, and the Panthers stepped in to fill the void.

The people showed up to a concert experience that thrived amid grief and persistent rage. Backed by a reform-minded Mayor John Lindsay, who’d built avenues of trust in Harlem by walking its streets on more than one occasion, the festival stood as a symbol of hope and everyday placemaking. Lindsay’s belief that “We can lick the problems of the ghetto, if we care,” morphed into the concert poster’s slogan, “Do you care?” Lindsay was introduced as “the blue-eyed soul brother, ” and the gospel great Mahalia Jackson — who would join the newly solo vocal powerhouse Mavis Staples for a duet — spoke confidently of his impending victory.

Those who turned out in Harlem bucked the malicious stereotype of “the black mob.” They gathered peacefully with no incident — conjuring an energy akin to that of their Bethel, N.Y., hippie brethren — open and ready to ride the wave of a local black sound utopia. They were the living embodiment of Sly and the Family Stone’s “everyday people.” From 1972’s Wattstax in Los Angeles to 1973’s Soul at the Center events at Lincoln Center, from Diana Ross’s heroic 1983 rain-soaked performance in Central Park to Dave Chappelle’s 2004 rousing neo-soul-fights-neoliberal-gentrification Block Party, the idea of the large-scale African-American pop concert as community revival, sustenance, triumph and renewal is a recurring phenomenon.

The Harlem Cultural Festival was arguably one of the first of its kind to promote black pop as transformative urban event, as a site to be inhabited as well as a sound to be experienced, and the key to new neighborhood connections and collaborations. Observes Ludevig, there remains the “irreplaceable notion that you cannot replace the live experience … there’s something about being in a space and experiencing it firsthand …” that is utterly singular and potentially restorative in the life of a community. For black folks, the added power and energy of coming together in a place where one could not only see, hear and feel blackness onstage but also participate in a marketplace of neighborhood business owners was its own form of sustainability.

Such a legacy lives on most notably in today’s venerable and beloved Afropunk festival. Now a global phenomenon in its 15th year, Afropunk’s Brooklyn extravaganza began as “a social experiment,” according to Matthew Morgan, one of the founders. To Morgan, the center of community “is a marketplace, a business, and a way for people to trade,” which is why his concerts, like the Harlem event half a century ago, place so much emphasis on not just music but black business and “socio-economic empowerment.”

It’s a spirit as old school as peace and love. But here it’s infused with Afrofuturist language and sensibilities of the now, a belief in the insurgent possibility of “the black hacker” who “disrupts the network,” “codes the culture” and “erodes the grid erected as a cage,” as Morgan puts it, all in the pursuit of vibrant new-world building.

Surely some of the seeds for such a movement were planted back in ’69, particularly when Simone chose as her final song a felt and pointed rendition of another new number, one she’d written in honor of her dear friend, the playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who had died some four years earlier. A love letter to the next generation and a book of instruction, “To Be Young Gifted and Black” was the kind of anthem meant to reach that little girl in the crowd who was hanging on her every word. “Open your heart to what I mean,” sang Simone. “We must begin to tell our young/There’s a world waiting for you/Yours is the quest that’s just begun.” Out on the field, as she emphatically reminded the masses that “your soul’s intact,” the universe was wide open.
