op. i'm so sorry op. gourdy isn't real you have to let her go. they had a whole trial about it.
🔐 wrightorwrong Follow
hi!! so this isn't actually the case as while gourdy was briefly mentioned in a trial, said trial had nothing to do with whether or not gourdy was "real" per se as much as. well. murder, actually. while gourdy WAS found out to be an inflatable steel samurai this was not brought up in the case at all as the veracity of gourdy wasn't really as relevant as the fact that the witness was looking for gourdy rather than at the murder she claimed to have seen. plus this was also a relatively small part of a MUCH larger trial which for those interested not only solved the dl-6 case but ALSO marked the end of prosecutor von karma's ~40 year long record and the court records are really a fascinating read through!!

#7 Red’s my favourite colour
Previously, on this story: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6
Tumblr media
Every day I wanted the ground to swallow me up. Every day I’ve been sitting alone in my apartment, unable to call anybody as my phone had been blocked, hoping something (or someone) would finally come to my rescue. I couldn’t believe my first days as a double-0 didn’t go as I had always planned, and I've been put under arrest only weeks after being promoted to the double-0 section. What is more, they suspected I had something to do with the attempted murder of the Head of MI6. So much for my promising career in espionage.
There were times I almost thought that *maybe* my deep feelings for Mallory (confirmed by Eve who has heard this whole embarrassing story from myself) had the power to save me from the arrest and a possible trial. But deep down I knew this wasn’t a possible scenario. Never ever I am going to reveal my feelings... The truth could ruin my life. It could ruin his life as well...
I tried to distract myself, so I refused to do anything that would remind me of my pathetic situation. The result was far from expected... I was playing video-games or reading books, I was willing to do *anything* that could help me forget about Mallory. It wasn’t easy, as spring was coming to town. Spring... In my world it was always associated with love... or at least some casual flirting.
It was early in the morning, but I was already sitting on my couch and switching channels on my tv. I was so hopeless and bored, that even my favourite coffee I kept sipping from my mug couldn't change my mood. My hair was a mess and I was wearing nothing but the black satin bathrobe on this another ordinary day since the beginning of my house arrest.
Out of the blue, I heard a door bell that scared me so much I spilled some coffee on the floor. I quickly turned off the tv and went to open the door.
"Morning. May I come in?"
I was still a bit shaken by the unexpected visit and my voice sounded unstable.
"Y-you came back?"
The man didn’t answer me, so I just stepped aside, allowing him to come in as he had requested. My eyes focused on his face when I closed the door after him.
It was actually a rare sight to see. It was *him*. James Bond, with a large bouquet of red roses in his hands, was standing in front of me. He looked as if he had just came home after taking his overdue holiday, judging by way he was dressed - a jacket in a light shade of brown and an ivory shirt. The three top buttons of his shirt were playfully undone. The look was completed by his shiny blond hair and a tanned face - a sign he has really been on the Maldives. I’ve never seen him in such a good shape, but despite looking like a million dollars, he appeared to be less self-confident than usual.
"Katherine... I'm here to apologize" he said, while handing me the roses. "I shouldn't have reacted like I did. I acted like an idiot. I'm really sorry... and I hope you can forgive me."
I was so surprised and furious at the same time to see him, that I totally forgot about my appearance - and the fact that I was completely naked under my bathrobe. I was standing in front of him, my arms folded, and eyes full of rage.
"Thanks," I replied, using my angry tone, as I looked at the bouquet, but refused to accept it. "But if you were really sorry, you would answer one of my calls."
"About that," added Bond and touched his left cuff. "You're right, I should have answered and talk to you... But I just preferred to do it in person."
As he didn't see any reaction to his words, he came closer to me and took my right hand in his.
"Please, Kath, let's forget about it and start anew. I didn't mean to hurt you," he said in his deep, smooth voice, and leaned down to kiss me gallantly on the hand.
I tried to make my face look like I was still pretty furious, but deep inside I was aware that I wouldn't be able to pretend for long. Damn, he's irresistible sometimes, I thought.
"Apology accepted," I said calmly, as I took the bouquet. "It seems I can't be mad at you."
I smelled the roses. It’s been a while since I was given flowers.
"It’s good to finally see you, James...”
I looked up at him and realized one of my sleeves had slid off, showing my bare shoulder that instantly drew Bond’s attention. The outfit might not have been the most appropriate for the occasion.
"Oh, please forgive me,” I trembled. “I hope it doesn't offend you..."
"Not at all," Bond declared. "Feel free to undress if you think it would be less provocative,” he added and smirked.
“Very funny.”
My eyes pointed to the coffeemaker.
"Oh yes, please," said Bond. "Coffee. Very black."
...
We spent the whole morning sitting on my couch, talking about everything, and drinking coffee. I quickly lost the track of time.
"There is one thing I don't get, James. How is it possible that the guards have let you in? You know, I'm not allowed to leave the place, so I thought I wouldn't be allowed to meet anyone either."
"Not exactly," said Bond. "Don't forget you talk to the 007 himself. He knows how to deal with such matters," the last sentence was accompanied by a smirk. He turned to me, waiting to see me laugh.
I did laugh.
“Right... Then I’m glad this 007 wished to see me.”
He raised his hand as if he intended to move the hair away from my face, but hesitated, and he continued to talk instead.
“He wished to see both you and Mallory. After I got informed about what had happened, I came back as quickly as possible.”
“What about the mission?” I asked, unable to get what he meant.
“It was finished. I just wanted to stay there for a few more days. That’s all,” answered Bond and hesitated again. “I’ve... I’ve already spoken with Mallory on the phone. He wants to see me tomorrow.”
“So it means... he’s back in the office?” I asked, raising my voice.
“Yes,” Bond replied and smiled. “You’ll be able to meet him as well, because the investigation’s over. So, to answer your question, there aren’t any guards there anymore.”
At that moment it occurred to me that when I opened the door for Bond, I didn't pay attention to the guards.
"Great...," I hissed. "Nobody tells me anything..."
I must have looked upset, because Bond moved closer and put his arm around me.
"Look on the bright side, Kath. They didn’t inform you of the result of the investigation properly... yet. That’s correct. But...” he held onto me, “what a messenger they’ve sent you!”
I turned my head to him.
“James... hold me tight... please.”
Bond did as I asked. For a while we were silent, wrapped into each other’s arms.
“Thank you,” I whispered into his ear. “I really appreciate that you’re here.”
“It’s nothing,” said Bond, still holding me in his arms. “I guess you were worried about Mallory?”
My heart started to beat faster, and I’m sure Bond could feel it on his chest. I replied after a few seconds.
"I was worried as hell..."
"It's just a stab wound. He'll be fine,” replied Bond and released his grip. “Katherine... could you tell me... was I really wrong about your feelings towards him?”
I looked into his eyes, not knowing what to say. I haven’t been that much confused in my entire life. I’ve already known I had fallen for Mallory badly, but I still wasn’t sure how much Bond meant to me. There was something about him I couldn’t explain and understand. They call it “the charm”, right?
“Do you really have to know that?” I questioned, caressing his muscular arm. “And besides, do you think I will tell you?”
He took my hand off his shoulder.
“You should get some rest before you go back on active service,” whispered Bond and kissed me on the forehead. “I’d better get going. It was lovely to see you, Katherine.”
“Thank you, James. I *adore* those roses,” I smiled at him mildly. “Red is my favourite colour.”
...
Two or three hours have passed and I’ve began to prepare my lunch. Of course I couldn’t stop to think about Bond. He came all the way just to see me... brought me those roses... I adore them... has any other double-0 ever got a bouquet of *red* roses from this man? I’m sure the answer is “no”, I thought while washing the tomatoes. But on the other hand... he had to come back anyway... and maybe this is just a sweet-talk... yes... he’s such a womanizer... there is no denying he slept with a girl or two while on Maldives... and you can’t blame him... but, he’s not a man for you... forget about him, Kath.
Suddenly, my phone rang. I wiped my hands and came to the table, wondering who the hell wants to talk to me at lunchtime.
I froze when I realized what has just appeared on screen. There was a huge, single letter: M.
“Yes?” I said as I picked up.
“Good afternoon, 002,” said a deep, but sharp voice. I wish your voice could wake me up every day... Oh, sir, I missed you so much. Keep talking, I thought.
“Good afternoon, sir.”
“You’ve probably already spoken to 007,” guessed Mallory. “I’m pleased to inform you that investigation didn’t prove the accusations, so... it means your arrest is over. Or, in other words, you’re back on active service,” he added coldly. “Congratulations.”
I didn’t listen to the words he said. I was hypnotized by the way he uttered those words.
“002? Are you still there?”
“Yes! Uhm... Thank you... Thank you, sir.”
“I suppose it means you’re ready to come back?” he asked and I could sense that he was smiling.
“Yeah,” I smiled as well. “Armed and ready.”
“I’m very glad to hear that, 002. Meet me in my office at 1 P.M. tomorrow for further instructions then.”
“With pleasure, sir. I’ll be there,” I assured him.
I was just about to hang up (what a relief to hear his voice... thank God he’s safe and sound), when I realized I didn’t ask him about the arm.
“Uhm, sir... I’ve been wondering... how... How do you feel?”
“Thank you for asking, Katherine...”
As he replied, I couldn’t believe what I’ve just heard. It made me feel all warm inside. Wait, did he *really* call me by my name?! I will remember that day till the rest of my life, I thought, and Mallory continued:
“... I feel a lot better. Good enough to get back to work... I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow... sir.”
I said the last sentence almost breathlessly... I sat on the couch and gasped for air. Wow... He *did* call me “Katherine”... for the first time since I’ve entered the section. Does it mean our relationship has moved on to the next level...? Wait, what did he say? 1 P.M., I think...
I had to contact Amanda. I’ve quickly typed a message:
Congrats Amanda!! We’re finally free! Can’t wait to see you. xx
She replied right away, but the truth was, I expected a more enthusiastic response:
Yeah, that’s great, Kath. Would you mind if we talked tomorrow before our meetings with M? It’s urgent.
I agreed, and went on to resume cooking. I had no idea what Amanda had in mind and it worried me, because rarely she was that laconic. I wondered what did she want to talk about. It all happened so fast today... the flowers (& the messenger!), the rescue, the phone call from my supervisor, and now Amanda’s request... It seems there is a lot going on right now. But let’s be honest, Kath... to look into Mallory’s eyes once again... this is what you desire most.
It’s time to get out.

To be continued.

Sweet Elite - Chapter 7
I reckon I’ve never done one of my big episode review for SE, so here I am, seat tight because there’s lots to unpack. Thus I’m putting everything under a cut.
Episode 6 left us with the meanest cliffhanger ever: we found out that Tadashi’s father has been arrested for colluding with the yakuza. Now we’re waiting in front of Lady Arlington’s office to learn about Tadashi’s destiny at the academy. When he finally comes out, he tells us that Lady A (unwillingly) asked him to start packing because unless he can prove he has no hand in his father’s illegal business, he has to leave.
Now, this part leaves me confused. First of all, no one not even Tadashi suggested that this might be a mistake and that his father is innocent. Aren’t people innocent until proven guilty? There’s been no trial yet. At the end of the episode we find out that there are many proofs against him and he sounds like a total asshole on the phone, so he is (almost certainly but you never know) guilty, still someone should have at least wondered about his innocence.
Also, Tadashi is a minor, fifteen/sixteen years old, he should not be under any scrutiny. Yes we know that he works with his father, but he’s still technically a kid in the eyes of the world. I understand the whispers and damages to his reputation, but I find it kinda absurd that he gets immediately kicked out of school, even if he’s there under “special circumstances”.
Anyway, we spend the whole episode talking with people about what they think about the situation and thinking about a way to help Tadashi. After talking with everyone, we meet Tadashi who shares with scholar about his situation and reveals that his parents are sort of blackmailing him into testify to his father’s behalf (he has pleaded not guilty). Apparently even though there are toooons of proofs including videos and witnesses, somehow Tadashi’s testimony is the key to his father’s freedom (?) Again, I am confused.
By the end of the episode, it seems that we are part of the Save-Tadashi squad which officially includes scholar, Karolina and Alistar, but Raquel also wants to help and Tegan has kinda been thrown into the mix by his sister, who asked him to hack Nakano’s Corp network (🙄 easy peasy right?)
I have to admit, I am not a big fan of this arc, it seems a little illogical from my point of view. But maybe that’s the point? We are normal people who identify with scholar who is a normal person surrounded by extraordinary people in an extraordinary environment. Maybe we are supposed to feel dumbfounded by everything that’s happening? I want to have faith in the team and believe that this story is going to make sense by the end.
I feel that the game is at a crossroad. I know there have been many changes this past year in the team and I really appreciate how they are all juggling life, school, work while at the same time making this amazing game. I bet it’s draining both mentally and physically.
This kinda reflects in the game, because the past two episodes have felt somehow rushed and not at the same level of the previous ones. Episode 7 is basically one objective: find out what people think about Tadashi’s situation. That’s it. Nothing happens in the plot and you spend your whole time just going back and forward trying to talk to people about what just happened. Considering that this is an otome game, you basically have one conversation with your crush and that’s it. I like talking with all the guys, but having one-on-one with everyone made more sense when we were trying to get to know them. I know that technically it has been just around one month or little more of school in-game, but we players wait months between one episode and the next, to just get one short conversation with the crush. Talking as someone who plays loooooooooots of otome games, I would find much more interesting if I could chose with whom to spend time, and spend the whole episode only with those few selected people, 10 LIs are too many to equally divide time with, you end up spending very little with each.
Now, I don’t want to sound like an ass, the game has these few problems that I think could be easily addressed, but it has also lots of potential.
I loved the previous art but I think they are finding their dimension with these new artists, the first look at the new sprites got me excited and the redraw of episode 6 illustrations and the one from episode 7 are really promising. I think they are all moving in the right direction.
Also, the main reason I play this game is neither the plot nor the art, but the writing. I LOVE how each charater is so different and well-characterised and just the way they talk to each other. The dialogues are funny and engaging and even scholar who is supposed to be a blank canvas, is actually a really cool and smart character and a pleasure to identify with.
So, here is the list of my favourite moments of the episode (which I’ve played twice so far, on Axel and Tegan’s routes):
Cheeky Tyler:
Tumblr media
Tyler don’t make me fall for you! I already like your new sprite waaaay too much. Also, I’m already playing 4 routes, I can’t add a fifth!
Savage scholar:
Tumblr media
The dude deserved it.
Flirty Raquel:
Tumblr media
👀👀👀 So much sass... I love this girl!
Axel plagiarizing John Legend:
Tumblr media
😂😂😂 babe this song already exists, changing a few words is not enough 😂
Scary Ellie:
Tumblr media
This girl would be able to stab you with her trusty screwdriver while still sweetly smiling at you. ROLE MODEL.
Holding Alistair’s hands:
Tumblr media
You too Alistar... stop acting so swoony, I can’t play anymore routes!
Now, the piece the resistance. What I really loved about this episode, is seeing how the writing changes according to the route you’re on. I love looking for all the little differences and, since I really love this game’s writing, I had a blast during the couple of minutes we got to spend with our crush.
As I said, I played only Axel’s and Tegan’s routes so far (I also play Tadashi’s and Karolina’s but I’m a few episodes behind).
Axel’s scene in the garden is to fall for. First of all, when you correctly guess that he has issues with his family, he simply tells you that he doesn’t have time to talk about it now if you’re not on his route. But if you have high infinity meter he also acts bashful and cute
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE the fact that when he gets embarrassed and shy he also looks mad ❤, it almost seems like he can’t fathom why he’s feeling like this. Too cute! I hope this is going to be preserved in the new sprites.
And then, afterwards, when he complains he has to write a love song (makes me wonder what he’s written about so far) and doesn’t know how, he decide he’s going to look for some couples around the school to stalk/interrogate. But if you have high meter he basically serenades you 💕💕 I’M DEAD! Looks at scholar in the eyes and just starts creating the song on the spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder how aware he is about his own feelings. What I would give for a change in POV!
Now... Tegan... my sweet dork... he’s such a sweetheart.
You meet him in the corridor, he’s in a rush and you apologise for being in his way. If you’re not on his route, he simply tells you that he can spare you a few moments. If you have a high meter instead, this is what happens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, when you afterwards tell him that he is also a great friend, if you have low meter he simply thanks you and leaves. If you have high meter, scholar adds that he is kinda jealous of his friends and he gets flustered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What do I have to do to smooch this cute stupid genius? If scholar doesn’t literally jump on him I bet he’s never going to make a move.
Anyway, these are all my thoughts about the episode. As I said, I have a few issues, but there’s also lots I liked. I trust the team and I’m sure the’re going to do great things in the future.

Curious Conundrum (Part 17)
Prompt: You’re John Watson’s sister. One day you decide to visit your brother for lunch, only to meet the infamous Mr. Holmes…
Word Count: 1935
Warnings: language, flirtation, sexual innuendos (maybe? idfk), murder/crime/case related stuff, angst, jealousy…
Notes: Beta’d by @carryonmyswansong Not only did she beta, but I literally couldn’t have written half these scenes without her help. She contributed majorly, even wrote some parts of scenes. I am forever in her debt.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9| Part 10 | Part 11 | Part 12 | Part 13 | Part 14 | Part 15 | Part 16 |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The anniversary had definitely taken a backseat, what with Sherlock headlining here and there, getting awards, presents, and rewards from every case he helped. He couldn’t care less, but you knew John liked the (somewhat) glorification.
But then Moriarty had downright shocked you as he somehow managed to break the case to the crown jewels. He was, of course, arrested. But he had some form of plan. What was it? That’s what was eating all three of you alive.
You were less concerned with how, and more concerned with why he wrote “Get Sherlock” and what the end game was.
Six grueling weeks later and Sherlock was called to trial as a witness. Both you and John accompanied him.
“Remember,” you tried to say and he cut you off.
“I know.”
You let out a breath of frustrated air. “Sherlock, this is serious. Moriarty is not to be fucked with, you know this. Don’t--”
“Don’t do anything like myself. Don’t provoke them. I know.”
You closed your eyes, knowing it was useless.
Before the trial, Sherlock went into the bathroom and you waited outside for what seemed like forever before he finally emerged.
“Bloody hell, did you fall in?” you demanded.
“Sorry, had to deal with a flirting fanatic,” he noted.
“You... What?!”
But Sherlock calmed you down by shrugging it off, and of course, he had to enter court. Sherlock had asked you to tune into your deduction skills and watch all over the courtroom while he took the stand.
When it was all said and done, you three went over the facts, walking back into the flat.
“...Three of the most secure places in the country and Moriarity broke into them and no one knows how or why. All we know is--”
“He ended up in custody,” Sherlock finished.
“Don't do that,” John slowly requested.
“Do what?”
“The look?”
“What look?”
“You’re doing the look again?”
“Well I can’t see it, can I?”
John gestured to the mirror. “My face?” Sherlock asked, completely confused.
“Yes, and it’s doing a thing. It’s doing that ‘we both know what’s really going on here face’.”
“Well, we do,” Sherlock insisted.
“No, I don’t, which is why I find ‘the face’ so annoying.”
You’d been gripping your head in frustration before you finally snapped, “Oh for God’s sakes! If Moriarty wanted the jewels he would have them. If he wanted the prisoners free, they would be. The only reason he’s sitting in a cell is because that’s what he’s chosen. So now the question is why. Why does Moriarty want to be behind bars? What’s the point? What’s the end game?”
By the end of your rant, you’d begun to pace.
“Y/N’s right, it’s part of his scheme,” Sherlock agreed.
At this, the three of you continued to mull over the “why”... Sherlock the most concerned with it.
-----------------
John went to the trial, to hear the sentence. Sherlock waited at home. You were actually doing your real job, busy at a trial of your own, but your mind was never far away from your boyfriend. You were nervous as hell, but you were sure they would find him guilty. How could they not?
But then the horrible news that he was found not guilty rocketed you into another dimension. John had called you after he called Sherlock. His voice was full of panic.
“What do you mean they found him innocent?!” you shrieked as you were on recess for your own trial.
“I don’t know. But they did. He’s coming for Sherlock, I know it. The bastard just hung up on me though.”
You tried to even out your breathing. “Okay, that’s okay. If Sherlock knows this, he has a plan.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“I know Sherlock and I know he weighed and thought about every possible outcome. If Moriarty is coming for him, he’ll be ready. In the meantime, I gotta go. Keep me updated.”
You ended the call and went back to your trial. When it was done (and you’d won the case), you raced to Sherlock’s flat where he was explaining everything to John. Apparently Moriarty had come by the apartment and had a little chat with him. Of course it was a threat, but none of you knew what the hell it meant or could possibly mean.
You and Sherlock seemed to spend the better part of two months going over anything he could be plotting. Romance, the anniversary, the relationship as a whole went on the back burner. All efforts and focus was either on Moriarty or an active case.
Then suddenly, a kidnapping case had come about. Sherlock was nearly giddy with glee as it seemed to be a rather curious case indeed. As luck would have it, you were with him when Donovan and Lestrade presented the case to him. You, John, and Sherlock were driven to the site of the abduction.
You watched Sherlock work (an aphrodisiac for you). He startled the nanny, and then graciously told her he believed her story and requested someone get her a bag to breathe into. The sheer confidence of the ordeal was enough to make you smirk appreciatively.
Donovan caught your approving face and skipped up next to you.
“You think him being a complete ass and scaring poor old women is funny do you?”
Your face lost all trace of humor, and anger ignited inside you. “I think Sherlock getting the job done as quickly as possible is good, yes. Or was that not the point? To get to the children as quickly as possible.”
“He sure has a funny way of going about it,” she muttered snidely.
“At least he doesn’t fuck around while on the job, literally. How is Anderson’s wife by the way?” you asked, turning to face her as you walked backward. A mischievous grin played on your face as you twiddled your fingers in the air at her like a wave before turning to follow Sherlock into the house.
Watching Sherlock work, you remained silent. It was best not to speak while he was “in the zone” unless asked. He found a bottle and requested for Anderson. Anderson came and prepared the room for black light analysis. Without fail, Anderson gave a brilliant impression of a moron, to which Sherlock told him so.
He found some samples of the kidnappers boots that he said would behave like a map for them. Which would be true. Scraping some samples and the three of you rushing to St. Barts, Sherlock began his analysis, dragging Molly into it as well.
Every time you were around Molly, it was….strained. You knew she had known him longer than you had, you knew she had feelings for him -- still, and she stayed in line, not trying to cross the line of friendship with Sherlock. Yet every time you were around her, there was a touch of awkward tension in the air. Part of you respected her for being an adult, part of you didn’t like Sherlock around her because you knew of her feelings, and another part of you felt entirely sorry for her.
It must be one hell of a thing to watch the man you carry a torch for love another. Even if you and Sherlock never showed any sort of public affection, even if you kept it strictly professional while working a case, the fact remained that you were his and he was yours. This fact was glaring just by the looks you two shared, the way his gaze would linger on yours.The way he would shoot you a knowing smirk. The way he commended your deductions.
So now, you stood with John, helping him on some of the tests when Molly suddenly struck up a conversation with Sherlock that wasn’t science related.
“What did you mean ‘I owe you’?” she asked as she worked. Sherlock stopped his movements and you did too. You couldn’t help but listen in. “You said ‘I owe you’ while you were working,” she noted.
“Nothing,” he quietly said, shutting the topic down.
“You’re a bit like my dad. He’s dead. No… sorry--” she tried, realizing the social awkwardness of her statement.
“Molly, please don’t feel the need to make conversation, it’s really not your area,” Sherlock advised.
She made a face, a nervous, but bold face. “When he was dying, he was always cheerful. Lovely, except when he thought no one could see. I saw him once, he looked sad.”
Sherlock gave her a warning. “Molly…”
“You look said,” she continued, ignoring his tone of caution, “when you think they can’t see you.”
Both of their gazes flashed to the two of you, but you made quick work to shift your own eyes and make your hands start fiddling about.
“Are you okay? Don’t just say you are, because I know what that means when you think no one can see you.”
“You can see me,” he noted.
“I don’t count,” she commented, and a pang of sympathy washed through your chest for her. “What I’m trying to say is, if there’s anything I can do, anything you need, anything at all. You can have me.”
Red shot into your cheeks as you kept your face down, still pretending to work.
“No, what I mean is... I just mean... If there’s anything you need… It’s fine,” she stammered, ending her olive branch speech.
“But what could I need from you?” Sherlock asked and his tone made it clear that he would never need her.
“Nothing,” she replied, sorrow in the back of her voice. “I don’t know. But you could probably say thank you.”
Sherlock stuttered a thank you and she quickly exited the lab. Standing for a moment, you weren’t sure what to do. You wanted to talk to Molly, but on the other hand it would be best if you left it alone. Your tenacity got the better of you and you put your tools down, following her out into the hall.
“Molly,” you called, jogging to catch up to her.
She spun and faced you, not saying a word. You knew she didn’t like you, at all. She was polite to you around Sherlock because of him and John, and because she’s a nice person. But you knew if she could have a wish, it would be to get you out of the picture.
But that wasn’t the case. You were here to stay, and Molly needed to realize what her place was in Sherlock’s life.
You pressed your lips into a flat line as you peered at her, her waiting for you to say something.
“Look... I… I know you love him,” you started and she seemed to stiffen, probably awaiting you to demonize her. “I know how hard this must be for you. I wanted to let you know I appreciate you being an adult about this. And I really appreciate you not crossing that line and trying to be something more.”
Your gaze held hers for a second, a hardness settling into your eyes, while the rest of your face remained soft. “He doesn't have many friends, and it’s nice to know you’re there for him and support him.” You reached up and gripped her arm gently, a reassuring squeeze coming from you. “He and I are lucky to have you in our lives.”
Molly nodded, staying quiet a long time. “I--I--Yeah, you’re welcome.”
You smiled at her, the grin loaded as you let her go. Her gaze lingered on you a moment longer before she walked off to the cafeteria.
Battle with Sin.
I sometimes see people wondering “How can I better fight sin?”. I think part of it is trial and error. I will give out some methods that have helped me. I want you to feel free to add your own. It is a war so having good battle plans, sharing tactics and equipping ourselves is essential. It will sound a little cliche at first.
1. Knowledge and faith. The word of God is our sword, shield and amour.
Ephesians 6:11-20 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
2. Prayer.
Just going to repeat a part from Ephesians.
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Matthew 26:40-41 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
This verse really hits home. It makes me think we are like in the trenches watching for when to detonate the explosives (by praying to God our secret weapon). We must actively be watching for when we sense the devil is trying to tempt us. Then when we sense it we begin praying.
I sometimes go like “God, do you copy? I got him in my sight, he’s here alright, surrounding me from all corners”. God is like “Surrounding you say? Wonderful now we can fire from in any direction!”. I made a bit of a joke there xD
Tumblr media
3. Resist the devil.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the LORD thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
I tend to be like “Get back, get back, you don’t know me like that! You don’t know what I really want. I want God”. Lol sorry my brother kept saying this meme around the house xD
I find that the devil tends to tempt you less with sins once you’ve successfully overcome them a lot. He may come back now and then to test the waters.
Tumblr media
4. Know how the devil tends to attack and that we are NOT very strong. The devil is literally just plotting, scheming and hating you. It’s kind of waste of life because you would think he could find better things to do than pick on us. It turns out this is the best way he thought he might use the time he has left.
The devil tends to attack me with questions as he did Eve. I am not sure if he does the same with you or not. I just want you to be warned this can be a method of temptation.
Avoid tempting circumstances in real life or in your own mind. You don’t “got this” and you aren’t “strong”. We got to see we really are not that strong because I’m pretty sure each of us has not gone a day without some kind of sin. I mean even if it’s not loving God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. I would recommend not even going on the border line of sin.
To get you in a circumstance that will lead to sin he may say:
“What if you only go so far and not further?” We know this is a spiral downfall.
“You are strong enough to stop at the right moment”. Nope, nope, don’t do it.
“Is this really a sin if you only go halfway?”. Very funny...
“Just take one bite of the fruit of good and evil”. Oh wait, that one was for Eve.
I think you get the picture.
Tumblr media
6. Remember the past.
This one has personally helped me overcome actual sins. I remember the way it felt after I sinned. I felt bad, I felt guilty, I felt lonely, I felt distant, I felt sad, I felt I spat on the savior and so on.
So when I am about to sin I tell myself “It is not worth it! It will just bring me down and break me into little pieces. I do not want to ever go back to that feeling! It is not worth it”. It did not do much at first I would say “I just want this so bad (It is essentially worth it)”. I then came to a point where I got so sick of feeling terrible I told myself “Yeah true it is not worth the pain that follows”.
7. Avoid fear.
I don’t know if it’s just me... I sometimes become afraid of sinning or worse afraid after sinning. I start freaking out in the morning when I wake like “What if I ruin the day with sin? What if I sin today?! What if it is the last straw?”.
Good news is we have an advocate who pleads our case and a mighty man in battle by our side we can always reach. The one who never sinned!
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Psalm 24:8 Who is the King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.
Saying “do not fear” is all well and good... but how? I sometimes get so sick and tired of listening to the voice of fear and lies. “God will not forgive you”, “you crosses a line this time” sound familiar? I just get so angry at the devil and fear itself I say “I’m not letting go of God. I am going to hold on to him till my last breath. No one is taking him from my hands, no not the devil nor I even strong enough to take him away from me!”.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our LORD.
This comes down to not being passive in getting what you want. I will point back to the bible. Remember Jacob? He refused to ever stop wrestling with God until he blessed him. He gave him no rest! Remember the evil judge parable? The widow kept coming back. She gave him no rest! Remember that woman who came begging for help? At first Jesus even basically told her she is a dog. She did not give up arguing with him demanding that even dogs get crumbs. She gave him no rest because he was his only hope. All were willing to keep going to their last breath.
In verse 20 it says “And he said to her, ‘For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter’”. So the girl was not healed by waiting around her house hoping it be God’s will to heal her daughter. It happened because she pressed on with God.
One verse I like when thinking of prayer is Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Do you get the point? Don’t you dare let go of God. When you have sinned and failed cling all that much harder to him! Cling as hard as you feel you need! I sometimes hug my pillow to represent symbolically the act of clinging to him spiritually.
GIVE GOD NO REST. Demand boldly that he gives you the blessing of his presence, the justice of his son and the trail of crumbs of his love. It is your right to demand in when you are in Christ.
Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
8. Sin fighting playlist.
1. I won’t look back. 2. Here’s my heart. 3. Not today Satan. 4. Raise the dead.
5. Soldier. 6. Anchor (remix). 7. King. 8. Rise. 9. Move. 10. The resistance.
11. As it is in heaven. 12. Warrior . 13. Lion’s den. 14. Elevated.
15. Step down. 16. Out of the fire. 17. Saved my soul. 18. Death was arrested.
19. Light a fire. 20. Love fighter. 21. Battlefield. 22. More than conquerors.
 23. Anchor. 24. The battle belongs to the Lord.  25. Point of no return.
26. My allegiance. 27. I am here for you.
Tumblr media
God bless soldier. Keep up the good fight without giving up! Keep pressing on no matter how hard it may feel at times.
Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
1 John 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Super Sonic Thieves Chapter 3
Chapter 3- The Case of Thieves and ‘Killers’
Intro Cutscene:
Sly: “Another look into the Thievius Raccoonus led us to visit England during the Victorian Era. Our family had an ancestor during that time, Thaddeus WInslow Cooper III, that was known as one of the richest families at the time. Besides being known as a wondrous mechanic, building one of the earliest flying machines, he was also a well-known detective from Scotland Yard as well.  There was something very worrisome about it though; not only is that information missing, but it seems he was arrested for committing attempted murder he was investigating! Looks like we’ll have to put on our thinking caps and grab the magnifying glasses to solve what has happened to my ancestor.”
Sly Cooper and the Gang in…
*An old timey book opens up to an empty page and a raccoon hand comes in with a red-inked quill and writes: ‘ The Case Of Thieves and ‘Killers’ ’. The ink slides down off the letters a bit, looking like blood.*
-----
Hub Layout:
The gang has their hideout just outside of London to the West in an abandoned farm (so they can hide the van since they don’t exist yet) during the winter, so not many people are outside as well, along with a covering of snow everywhere. The police department, and the jail as well, are in the center of the city, just West of the River Thames. Nearby is Big Ben, chiming on the hours. Since this is the 1800s, the city is much smaller, and is more filled with houses. The map ends on the River Thames though, so you can’t go any farther. The north side of London is the home of a huge manor and in the air is one of Eggman’s airships floating about, creating all the badniks.
Enemies
Crows: Black crows that flutter about the roofs in search of thieves, or anyone breaking the law for that matter. They will caw for other guards if provoked. Carries/drops 5-7 coins to pickpocket has 10% chance of treasure.
‘Werewolves’: Wolves that walk around, patrolling the streets with their heightened sense of smell for blood (Wolves in Sly’s world are anthropomorphic already, but they are ‘werewolves’ for being more fluffy and having longer claws, seemingly being transformed by the London moon.) They will counterattack with their claws with a nasty claw swipe that is almost unavoidable. Carries/drops 7-9 coins to pickpocket has 25% chance of treasure.
Horses: Brown-colored stallions that search the streets with their flashlights for anyone where they aren’t. Attacking these guys will make them retaliate with a hoof kick, but it does take them a bit to charge up. Despite what you’d think, it’s best to stay real close in front of their face if there is no alert about as they can’t see in front of their own head for a few feet. Carries/drops 7-12 coins to pickpocket has 50% chance of treasure.
Bobbie Pawns: Egg Pawns acting as the actual police force of London, but will club at anyone with their oversized clubs and will whistle for other enemies if left alone. Don’t attack their head as their have a spike on their cap that is NOT for show and WILL hurt. Drops 6 rings when smashed.
Egg Fighter Knights: Also wearing a police uniform, these guys opt for a sword and shield instead (But forgot their spike caps). Either hit them from the top or from the back to destroy them. Drops 8 rings when smashed.
Egg Gunners: Eggman’s blatant disregard for time has had him send his futuristic (And humanoid looking) badniks to fight Sonic and co. They can float in the air and fire at you with their vulcan cannons. Sonic and the others can handle them, but the Sly characters may need to get creative to smash these things. Drops 10 rings when smashed.
Nebula: Helicopter like badniks that drop spike balls on you if you pass underneath them. Better destroy them before that happens. Drops 4 rings.
Balkiry: Fast bird baniks that jet towards you. Better smash them when you see them. Drops 5 rings.
Turtloid: A small turtle badnik that controls a bigger turtle badnik that fires small missiles at you. Destroy the smaller one to make the bigger one useless. Drops 6 rings.
Treasures:
From Guards:
Bronze Quill: Worth 40 coins and 20 rings.
Silver Quill: Worth 60 coins and 30 rings.
Gold Quill: Worth 80 coins and 40 rings.
From Pedestals:
Pearl Necklace: No bobby trap. Worth 400 coins and 200 rings. Found around Annis Fox's home.
Gold Crown: Bomb booby trap, with 2:00 timer. Worth 450 coins and 225 rings. Found near the courthouse.
Silver Clock Hands: Bomb bobby trap, with 1:00 timer. Worth 500 coins and 250 rings. Found on Big Ben’s roof.
Golden Magnifying Glass: Fall Damage Sensor booby trap. Worth 600 coins and 300 rings. Found near Thaddeus’s home
The coins here have an old Victorian England Coat of Arms on them.
Secret Sighting of Clockwerk: Acting as a gargoyle statue in a park. Maybe he’s a Weeping Angel? :P
Another London ‘Murder’ Mystery
Find a disguise for Sly
Go talk to Thaddeus
Steal the case info
Head off to the manor and take recon.
Sly: “It feels weird that I am going to a police station voluntary again.”
Carmelita, through the radio: “Giving you bad memories? Preferably in shocks!” *She chuckles.*
Sly: “Huh, so that’s why my tail has a tingling sensation near you.” *He chuckles back.*
Bentley: “GUYS! PAY ATTENTION!!”
Sly: “Buzzkill.”
Carmelita: “Indeed.”
Bentley: “We don’t got time! We need to hurry in and find Thaddeus! His trial is tomorrow, and we need to figure out to save him before then, but first we need to talk to him!”
Sly: “Alright, Bentley, don’t get your shell cracked. We’ll talk to him, although I wonder if they might arrest me for looking like him…”
Espio: “Don’t worry, I’ll distract them, but perhaps you might need a disguise…”
Bentley: “I would guess the evidence locker for clothes might have something you can use. Now come on!”
*Sly and Espio head into the Police Station. The player has them sneak around, avoiding and distracting police officers with various things to get their attention as they make their way to the evidence locker where they store clothes. There are waypoints in the room for things to collect.*
Sly: “Alright.” *He puts them on.* “Heh, should fool them enough. Now to find Thaddeus.”
*The player continues sneaking on, making their way to Thaddeus’ cell. Once there…*
Thaddeus was sitting, looking away from the bars. “Huh? Who goes there? Another annoying bobby making fun of a ‘lost’ detective?”
Sly: “Quite the opposite really. I want to help restore your reputation.”
It peaked Thaddeus’s interest, with his ears twitching and tilting his head a bit. “Oh, really? And who might you be?”
Sly: “Well, it’s a long story, but I am an ancestor of yours. My name is Sly Cooper.”
Thaddeus turns and walks up to the bars to look at Sly. “Hmmm… it appears you are a Cooper alright. But what are you doing here?”
Sly: “Well, it seems obvious you aren’t meant to be in prison. I know you are a great detective, but someone has altered history to put you in here.
Thaddeus: “Is that so? How? And why? You didn’t have something to do with this, did you?”
Sly: No! ...Well, I hope. Anyway, I’m afraid I can’t explain right now. Can’t risk overstaying my welcome here. But what can you tell about what’s going on. How’d you get arrested?
Thaddeus: “Ah, it is the most infuriating thing! I was framed for attempting to murder Lady Fox, a fox of extraordinary wealth.”
Sly: “WHAT?!”
Thaddeus: “Yes! Even though I’ve never been nor had any reason to ever visit her place, the law found my items in her living room where she laid comatose, and her own valuables were missing! Being from a family of master thieves, I was of course accused of the crime despite none of those valuables being in my possession.”
Sly: Blamed for a thieving you didn’t even commit. Unbelievable…
Thaddeus: Oh, I shudder to think of how tarnished my legacy has become with this unfortunate event...
Sly: Hey, don’t worry! Me and my gang are going to do everything we can to clear your name! I’m not going to let one of my favorite ancestors go down like this!
Thaddeus: A thousand thank yous, my dear descendant. I bet if you want to know anymore of the case, they probably have the information handy, since my trial, which is gonna be more of a death sentence than anything, is soon.”
Sly: “We’ll figure out some way-”
Espio interjects quickly. “Someone’s coming! And we can’t hide you!”
Sly: “Don’t worry, I got this.”
Police Officer: “Hey?! Who are you? What are you doing here?”
Sly (In his favorite accent, Italian :P ): “Oh? A-me? I’m-a the defense lawyer sent to defend Thaddeus. It’s-a my first case.”
Police Officer: “Hah! I see they found a sucker to defend Thaddeus! No one wants to touch that! Good luck, buddy, his case is a lock! Better be prepared to lose!” *The thought was apparently funny enough that the officer leaves.*
Espio: “That was close.”
Sly: “Guess I’m gonna defend you then, Thaddeus.”
Thaddeus: “Knowing you’re doing it, I feel relieved. I wish you luck.”
Sly: “Thanks.”
*The player now makes their way back out, taking the case info someone left out along the way.*
*Outside…*
Bentley: “So you had to tangle yourself with the case huh?”
Sly: “Well, someone has to defend Thaddeus! Besides, it might help with whatever plan we come up with later.”
Bentley: “True. Well, I guess you should make your way to the manor then. See what the crime scene suggests.”
*The player heads off to the manor and in disguise, enters it. They make their way to the master bedroom, where the crime occurred.*
Sly: “Hmmm… quite a mess in here…”
*The player takes recon photos of the broken window, hole in the wall, the neat bed, and the trail of loot leading out of the open empty safe.*
Bentley, on the broken window. “It seems to be where the criminal entered, considering the glass on the inside floor.”
Bentley, on the hole in the wall. “That shape seems quite odd. Maybe we need to ask Sonic and his friends on that.”
Bentley, on the neat bed. “Hmmm, for the mess in the room, the bed looks oddly neat. This Ms. Fox must have been put to sleep before she could even react.”
Bentley, on the trail of loot. “Whoever did this seems to have dropped a money trail, literally. I think we should check where it goes.”
Sly: “That seems to be everything interesting we can find here.”
Bentley: “Alright, come back to the hideout so we can read the case info and we’ll go on from there.”
JOB COMPLETE
-----
Bentley: “Alright. Here seems to be their case for the prosecution: Yesterday morning, nearby neighbors awoke to the sound of glass breaking from the manor. Worried for Ms. Fox, they immediately went to get the police. They came quick and found her comatose on the bed and her safe open and completely empty of money and valuables. Finding what was a calling card for Thaddeus, they immediately arrested him and took his cane along with them. Oddly, the cane is missing from the evidence log, so it can be assumed it was lost on the way to the station. They threw him in jail, and now it’s just waiting for the case to finish to kill him.”
Vector: “Seems like they have a really good case against him, especially with the calling card.”
Charmy: ♪ “Heh, maybe we should take it back so they have no case!” ♫
Bentley: “That’s what we were thinking. We need to steal it so they will have a harder time prosecuting him. And it might also free Thaddeus for the time being.”
Charmy: ♪ “Sweet! So who gets to go?” ♫
Bentley: “We’re gonna have Espio and Carmelita go in to find the evidence. It’s too dangerous for anyone else.”
Charmy: ♪ “AW! I wanted a mission!” ♫
Bentley: “Don’t worry, you got a mission with Vector. You guys will follow the money trail to see where it ends.”
Charmy: ♪ “YAY!” ♫
Vector: “We won’t let you down!”
-----
Follow the Green
Follow the trail of money to its end
Vector: “Alright, we’re under the broken window that the trail of cash leads to, but it seems the snow is covering more it.”
Bentley: “Darn, I see the snowfall has been heavy recently. How are we going to find it?”
Charmy: ♪ “OH! Oh! Vector can find it! He can find the trail, no problem!” ♫
Bentley: “Really? How?”
Vector: “Heh, well, I have somewhat of a sense of money. I can smell it from a distance.”
Bentley: “Great! Go on, then! Follow the trail!”
Vector: “Got it.”
*The player has to hold down a certain button to make Vector sniff the ground, which makes green clouds float above the ground, showing the money trail. The player has Vector and Charmy follow it among the streets, alleys, and roofs throughout town, until they reach Big Ben.*
Charmy notices them stop. “What is it?”
Vector: “For some reason, the trail stops here in front of Big Ben. It might continue, but we can’t get up there.”
Bentley: “It’s alright, guys. Come back to the safehouse. We’ll find a way up there.”
JOB COMPLETE
-----
Freeing the Innocent
Enter the evidence locker and steal back the evidence leading to Thaddeus
Save Carmelita from the police officers.
Carmelita, wearing a period accurate police uniform stolen earlier by Sly. “I wonder if they will believe me in this get-up.”
Espio: “Well, I just need you to convince them long enough so I can get through the evidence locker for Thaddeus’ stuff.”
Carmelita: “Hmmm, if they are like present day evidence holding rooms, it should be alphabetized. So look under ‘C’ .”
Espio: “Got it.”
*The player enters and takes control of Espio as Carmelita grabs the attention of the police around. The player makes their way to the evidence locker and enters it.*
Espio: “Oh my!”
Bentley: “What is it?”
Espio: “For being the 1800s, the place sure has modern-day lasers.”
Bentley: “Hmmm… I wonder if Eggman has messed around in here?”
Espio: “Well, it’s not going to stop me. I got this.”
*The player makes their way through the evidence locker, avoiding the lasers and other modern-day traps to reach Thaddeus’ evidence, which Espio grabs.*
Espio: “Alright. Time to get out of here.”
Bentley: “You better hurry. Carmelita seems to be having trouble keeping up out there. She sounds mad.”
Espio: “Got it.”
*The player now has to make their way out, noticing Carmelita is overwhelmed. The player has Espio make some noises and distractions to help Carmelita escape. Once it works, they leave to finish the mission.*
JOB COMPLETE
-----
Bentley: “Alright. I got good news and bad news.”
Sly: “I’m guessing the good news is Thaddeus is now free from jail?”
Bentley: “Yes.”
Sonic: “That seemed too easy.”
Bentley: “Well, that’s the bad news.”
Thaddeus: “Apparently, someone claims they saw me putting Ms. Fox to sleep and stealing her money, and they are testifying in court tomorrow. I’m free to move around the city, but I can’t leave.”
Charmy: ♪ “Darn! All that for nothing!” ♫
Thaddeus: “Well, I’m here now, and I want to help you find the real criminal!”
Sly: “So what are our plans on doing that?”
Bentley: “Well, Silver and I will be entering Big Ben to continue on the trail of the money. I have a feeling it will lead us to who did all this. Also during this time, Murray and Vector will check on Ms. Fox.”
Vector: “I think what has made her comatose is an Egg Flapper badnik. The hole in the wall matches up to one.”
Bentley: “Besides, she could be useful in solving the case. Finally, Thaddeus, Sly, and Sonic are going to take Thaddeus’ plane into the air. I think that airship is producing all the badniks down here and it might make our plan harder if we don’t take it down.”
Sonic: “Sweet! Some air time!”
Sly: “Huh, flying with my ancestor. Never thought I’d see the day.”
Tails: “I can see you guys are at Big Ben. Now how to help you guys get up on the roofs.”
Bentley: “Hmmm… nothing seems obvious…”
Silver: “Can I try something?”
*The player has Silver telekinetically grab Bentley…*
Bentley: “WHOA!”
*... And place him on the roof nearby before telekinetically floating Silver there too.*
Tails: “Well, that worked.”
Bentley: “I flew! But please warn me next time you do that!”
Silver: “Heh, sorry, and alright.”
*The player makes their way across the roofs of Big Ben tower, following the money trail as it takes them into the belfry's. It’s a bit of a dangerous trek, avoiding various swinging parts and for some reason, lasers again and being spun around on gears and destroying junk and walls with Bentley’s bombs. The money trail ends at an ajar door that they enter. Inside they find the vault contents and something more…*
Silver: “Look! The money!”
Bentley: “Shhh… that’s not all.”
*We pan to see Bark the Polar Bear sitting in a lounge chair, talking to Eggman.*
Bark: “Well, it’s a bit unconventional, but I’m going to be testifying to get Thaddeus executed.”
Eggman: “I can only guess that pesky hedgehog is the reason why you have to.”
Bark: “Sorry.”
Eggman:”It’s fine. I’m used to failure. Just make sure your case is solid!”
Bark: “It is, I promise! It can’t be disproven otherwise!”
Eggman: “You better hope so!”
Bark: “Well, if it’s any consolation, I have the info for Thaddeus’ cane and moves and stuff.”
Eggman: “Good. Send it over.”
Silver: “I think I can grab the cane, but we need to distract Bark first.”
Bentley: “I think if I hit the various bells and stuff above him, it should annoy him enough! I’ll use my darts to work them.”
*The player has Bentley shoot darts at various gears and bells, making them work to make a big cacophony that makes Bark cover his ears.*
Bark: “AH!!! The noise! So deafening!”
*The player has Silver take the distraction and telekinetically get the cane over to Silver.*
SIlver grabs them once they are close. “YES! I got them!”
Bentley: “Let’s get out of here before he notices.”
Grey’s Robo-Anatomy
Defeat the enemies in the hospital
Save Carmelita’s ancestor from the Egg Flapper
Vector: “Alright, Tails. We have made it to the hospital… although it looks quiet.”
Murray: “Too quiet. The hospital looks dark.”
Tails: “That doesn’t sound good. You guys better check it out and find out what’s happening.”
*They enter and find the place swarming with badniks and guards chasing the hospital staff.*
Tails: “Oh my! They seems to be attacking the staff and patients! You guys better stop them before anyone gets hurt!”
*The player goes on a protection mission, finding hospital staff and protecting them from the badniks and guards.*
*Once everyone is saved:*
Vector “Alrighty, we saved everyone.”
Murray: “But still no sign of Ms Fox.”
Tails: “Hmmm… I’m seeing a strange mechanical reading from one of the rooms that’s covering up someone’s signature. I’ll put a waypoint. See what’s in there.”
*The player goes to find the waypoint and enters the room to find…*
Murray: “ *GASP* Sly’s not going to believe this, but it appears Ms. Fox is actually Carmelita’s ancestor!”
Vector points out the badnik next to her. “Looks like she’s being held asleep by that Egg Flapper!”
*The robot wises up and flies out of the room.*
Vector: “After that badnik!”
*The player know has to chase after the Egg Flapper, throwing things at it to make it crash onto the ground so it can be attacked. Once destroyed, the player returns to Ms. Fox’s room to find her slowly awaking.*
Ms. Fox: “Oooh… what happened… feels like I’m drunk…”
Vector: “Hello, Ms. Fox. You were in a comatose state, but we found a way to wake you again.”
Annis Fox: “Mmm… please, call me Annis. And thanks. But why was I in one, and why am I in a hospital.”
Murray: “We can explain, but it might be safer to do it someplace else.”
Vector: “Is that alright, Ms?”
Annis: “Mmm, anything better than this hospital seems good at the moment.”
Robots in the Sky with Coopers
Survive the flying badniks
Take down the airship
Thaddeus: “Ah, home sweet home. I was worried I wouldn’t make it back.”
Sonic: “Why have you taken us here again?”
Thaddeus: “I’m your way of getting into the sky!” *The doors to the shed open, revealing a plane belonging to Thaddeus.*
Sly: “Wow! I saw it in the Cooper Vault, but seeing it here makes it look that much more awesome!”
Thaddeus: “It should work, but this will be my first time flying it, so I’d like apologize if things go south.”
Sonic: “Heh, it wouldn’t be my first crash landing.”
Sly: “Mine neither.”
Thaddeus: “Good. Your friend Bentley seemed adamant on taking out those robots flying up there. I guess you guys can balance on the wings to attack them. I’ll do my best to keep steady.”
*The trio get on the plane and Thaddeus takes off. The camera goes to 2D as a level like Sky Chase Zone starts.*
*The player is zoomed on forward, attacking badniks as they pass by. Sly is useful for close combat while Sonic can hit the more distant (floaty) badniks more safely.*
*Once that is all done, the airship closes in on them and cannon shells whiz by.*
Sly: “WHOA! What was that?”
Sonic: “Cannon shells. Eggman always outfits his airships with cannons. We better get off and destroy that airship as we are still close.”
Thaddeus: “I’ll distract them, but please hurry and destroy them first! I can’t save you guys otherwise!”
*Sly and Sonic jump off. The player now has them destroy the cannons on top of the ship then go into the interior and destroy the computers and other guidance systems to force the airship to crash. The player must then get out and get onto Thaddeus’ plane.*
*Getting on will let a cutscene play of the airship crashing into the River Thames.*
Sonic: “You keep building them and we keep knocking them down, Eggman!”
Sly: “Guess I can check that off on things our gang has destroyed. Let’s go return to Bentley with the news.”
Bentley: “Alright, Thaddeus’ trial is today and we need to get him found innocent. I got… no plan.” *He sounded sad.*
Sly: “Well, I am acting as Thaddeus’ defense attorney. (In his Italian accent.) “I shall-a find-a my client not-a guilty!”
Bentley can be heard slapping his face. “We’re doomed.”
Sly: “The only thing I need to do is just convince the judge Thaddeus didn’t do it by countering Bark’s testimony. Is there evidence I can use?”
Charmy: ♪ “Well, we do have the money trail leading out of the manor and to Bark and the valuables!” ♫
Sly: “That’s a good start, but I worry they might think I planted it then.”
Vector: “Well then, how about Ms. Fox’s testimony.”
Sly: “Sure, that would- wait, what?!” *He notices Annis.* “Carmelita?!”
Annis: “No, I’m Annis. I was told already and she knows about me being her ancestor around this time.”
Sly: “I… I see.”
Carmelita: “Don’t get any ideas, Cooper!”
Sly: “I’m not! I’m still surprised to see an ancestor of yours.”
Bentley: “I’ve made some calculations. Using her will most certainly free Thaddeus and implicate Bark! But we have to make sure she can survive a trip to the courthouse.”
Carmelita: “Blaze and I will do it. We’ll get her there safe. Just don’t mess it up Sly.”
Sly: “Heh, knowing I’m at the end of that barrel will keep me from messing up.”
-----
Operation Turnabout
Get Sly and Thaddeus to the courtroom
Protect Annis Fox
Stall the Courtroom
Defeat Bark
*The player controls Sly and Thaddeus, helping them make their way to the courthouse. But thanks to a heavy guard presence along the ground since the airship crashed, the duo have to stay among the rooftops to avoid being shot at.*
Sly: “We need to make it to the courthouse in one piece.”
Thaddeus: “Being eviscerated is for court.”
*Once they get there, the camera returns to the safehouse, everyone leaving ahead save for Carmelita, Annis, and Blaze*
Bentley: “We’ll scout ahead to make a path, but you guys will have to deal with any stragglers.”
Carmelita: “I’ll make sure they don’t lay a hand on my ancestor at all.”
Blaze: “I’ll make sure of that.”
*The player now has to escort Annis to the courtroom, taking down any guards and badniks along the way. Annis is not much of a fighter, but can dodge somewhat. Just make sure to not let any enemy get close to her and you’ll be fine. Once at the courthouse, they immediately enter...*
*The Judge snaps his gavel to quiet the gallery.*
Judge (He’s an owl): “Order, people! The attempted murder trial of Ms. Annis Fox is to begin now. Is the defense ready?”
Sly: “As-a ready as we can-a be, ‘Udgy!”
Judge: “And the prosecution, Mr ‘Wolf?”
Prosecutor Edge-Were-Wolf: “Despite some setbacks, yes.”
Judge: “Setbacks?”
Prosecution: “Someone… stole some evidence…”
Judge: “But that means there’s no case from what I read.”
Sly: “Then-a my client should-a go free!”
Prosecution: “HOLD IT! We may not have evidence, but we have the next best thing! Testimony from someone who witnessed the crime and certainly put Thaddeus as the killer!”
*The gallery murmurs.*
Judge: “Then bring him out! We got executions and cases to get to!”
Prosecution: “The prosecution calls Bark the Polar Bear to the stand.”
Sly whispers to Thaddeus: “Alright, you ready?”
Thaddeus: “I am used to this, but are you?”
Sly: “Yeah, if it means I save you.”
--
*Bark takes the stand*
Judge: “Please state your name and occupation for the court. Not that it matters.”
Bark (Having a British accent): “My name’s Bark and I’m Annis’ butler. I know what I saw when I walked in! Thaddeus was there!”
-WItness Testimony-
Bark: “I had finished my work for the day and left, but I forgot something and went back in. There, I saw Annis’ bedroom in ruin and Lady Fox on the bed motionless. And I saw Thaddeus, that very raccoon, pilfering her most treasured items with an evil grin!”
--
Judge: “Well, that seems to wrap this case up quite nicely! Be the quickest conviction ever! I find Thaddeus-”
Sly interrupted: “OB-JECTION, ‘Udgy, but did-a you forget I’m here to counter?!”
Judge: “Why should you?! Seems pretty open and shut, honestly.”
Sly: “I can find some-a holes, trust-a me.”
Judge: “Fine, but don’t waste our time.”
-Counter Argument (The player decides if Sly presses, objects, moves on, or moves back a statement with dialogue trees from Sly 3. Wrong objections empty the penalty bar, doing it twice gets a guilty verdict and must start over from the beginning.)-
Bark: “I had finished my work for the day and left, but I forgot something and went back in.”
Sly- Do I press him for more info, object to the statement with evidence, or move on to a new statement?
-*If Press is chosen: (CORRECT OPTION)*
Sly: “HOLD IT! What is it you forgot-a to do that required returning back to the manor bedroom?”
Prosecutor: “OBJECTION! Does it really matter?”
Sly: “I-a think so! It might be-a important!”
Judge: “I’ll allow it. Witness?”
Bark laughs nervously: “I… uh… forgot to lock the safe.”
Prosecutor: “WHAT?! You didn’t tell me that?!”
Bark: “It didn’t seem relevant… you’d have to be a part of her staff to even know if the safe was locked.”
Sly: “See! I-a told you it was important!”
Prosecutor: “Ob… Objection! As he said, it’s not relevant totally”
Sly: “Is it? The crime occurred-a when the safe was-a unlocked! Smells of an inside job if you ask-a me!””
Judge: “I have to side with the Defense. Witness, amend your testimony.”
Bark: “I had stupidly forgotten to lock the safe.”
Sly: “Do I press him for more info, object to the statement with evidence, move on, or go back a statement?
*If Sly presses*
Sly: “Hold it! Why did you forget to lock the safe?”
Bark: “I was… busy… Annis had pushed me around a lot that day. It slipped my mind.”
Prosecutor: “I don’t see a problem here, honestly.”
Sly: *Is there?*
YES (Incorrect)-
Sly: “I… I think?”
Judge: “Allow me to decide: No!”
Sly: “D’oh!”
NO (Correct)-
Sly: *Mmm, he is right… if I was busy, I could forget something important.* “Fine, move on.”
Bark: “There, I saw Annis’ bedroom in ruin and Lady Fox on the bed motionless”
*If pressed*
Sly: “Hold it! How did you know the bedroom was in ruin?!”
Bark: “Well, the safe was ajar and the bed was a mess, like with a struggle!”
Prosecutor: “Is there a point?”
YES (Correct)
Sly: “Yes! I took a photo of the scene and found the bed to be neat and tidy, as though she never got out of bed in the first place!” *Shows a period accurate picture of the bedroom for the court.*
Bark: “Oh… darn...”
Prosecution: “Damn it…”
Judge: “The witness will refrain from lying on the stand.”
Bark: “Sorry… I just forgot…”
NO (Incorrect, but just does nothing, as it requires a revisit)
Sly: “No… not that I can see…”
Judge: “Please continue.”
Bark: “And I saw Thaddeus, that very raccoon, pilfering her most treasured items with an evil grin!””
*If pressed.*
Sly: “Hold it! How do you know it was Thaddeus?”
Bark: “It was him for sure! I saw his cane!”
*The prosecutor slaps his face.* “Damn it!”
Judge: “HUH?! Why the outburst, Prosecution?”
The prosecution seethes. “That… was the missing evidence.”
Sly: “Perhaps we can-a help?”
Prosecutor and Judge: “What?!”
Sly: “We found the cane.” *He shows it to the court.*
Judge accepts it as evidence. “Where was it?”
Sly: “Well, it might-a not help the prosecution. But we found it in Bark’s possession. He-a dropped it.”
Bark starts to look worried.
Sly: “And while we are-a on the subject, I think the police should-a visit Big Ben! We did some detective work and found a money trail leading for Annis’ home to his secret hideout in Big Ben. And we found the lost valuables!”
Bark now looks angry.
The judge is surprised. “You found the money and valuables?!”
Sly: “Yeah, and Bark’s testimony seems to neglect the hole in the manor wall and the glass on the inside of the window on top of the hole!”
Judge: “How about you tell us your theory, Defense.”
Sly: “I-a think Bark doesn’t work-a for Annis, and was actually planning on-a robbing her! He-a knocked her out beforehand with one of-a those weird things flying around outside, creating the hole and making her comatose!”
Judge: “So weird things outside belong to him?”
Sly: “Yes! Then he crashed in-a through the window and then robbed her of-a her stuff, leaving a trail to-a his place! Thaddeus is wrongly implicated here!”
The prosecutor smiles: “And can you prove this?”
*A voice can be heard in Sly’s ear at this time.*
Bentley: “Sly! We’re here! We can hear you! Finish it off!”
Sly: “Yes!”
The prosecutor loses his smile fast. “Wait, what?”
Sly: “Why-a don’t you ask Annis Fox yourself?!”
Judge: “But she’s comatose!”
Sly: “We-a found a way to revive her! Just ask her! I call Annis Fox to the stand!”
*The court doors open and Annis walks in.*
The prosecutor: “A-a-a-a ANNIS FOX?!”
Bark: “Damn it…”
Annis: “I heard the defense, and he is right! I believe I saw a bear outside a few times beforehand, and Bark looks just like him! I feel confident that he robbed me!”
The prosecution is speechless.
Judge: “I guess that wraps this up nicely. I find Thaddeus -”
Bark: “NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!”
-*If Object is chosen at a wrong time.*
Sly: “I-a Ob-ject!”
Prosecutor: “On what grounds? Even a fool could tell nothing is wrong there!”
Judge: “Sorry, but I’m with the prosecution. Penalty for the defence”
Sly: “D’oh!”
-*If penalty bar is empty*
Judge: “I’m sorry, but I must stop the defense from making a fool of himself. I find Thaddeus: G U I L T Y.”
Sly: “Sorry Thaddeus…”
--
*In a fit of anger from losing, Bark pulls out a button switch*
Sly: “What’s that?”
Bark: “I WILL NOT LOSE TO YOU FOOLS!!! DIE!!!!”
*He presses the button, and sounds can be heard outside…*
Sly: “Everyone! Get out now!”
*One of the crashed airship’s last cannons, still operational apparently, aims itself at the courthouse and fires a powerful shot. Everyone scrambles to get out of the courtroom before the shot collides. Once the shot hits, the roof collapses and the debris wreck the courtroom with only Carmelita and Knuckles remaining inside, the rest of the team unable to get back in due to the debris blocking them.*
Knuckles: “Ugh… Oh thank the heavens, we’re alive.”
Carmelita: “Urk, yeah… Unfortunately, we’re alone with him now.”
Bark: “Dammit! How did that not kill anyone?! No matter! I’ll take you both down and then kill that brood like I was supposed to!”
Carmelita: “HA! Good luck with that! I’ll have you know I’m Interpol’s top detective and I’ve taken down criminals far stronger than you! And if you think I’ll let you kill my ancestor this easily, you’re very mistaken!”
Knuckles: “Yeah! And my strength easily outmatches yours! You have no chance, Polar Bear!”
Bark: “We’ll see about that, you echidna lastling!”
*Carmelita fires an electric blast from her Shock Pistol at Bark. Right when the shot was about to hit Bark, it disappears and the polar bear is not affected*
Carmelita: “What the-?!”
Bark: “Hehehe, my boss prepared for your arrival and gave me a device to activate an Electric Shield! It protects me from electricity and gives me a shocking punch!”
*Carmelita growls and jumps at Bark, intending to deliver a powerful kick to his head, but he catches her foot and tosses her into one of the rubble*
*And so the boss fight against Bark begins. Thanks to his Electric Shield, Bark is completely invulnerable to Carmelita’s shots. Thankfully the Electric Shield will disappear should Bark suffer a powerful enough hit but he is tough as bricks, so only Knuckles can do anything about this. The first part of the fight has Knuckles and Bark duking it out like boxers. In other words, this part of the fight plays like a simplified fighting game; the controls have you punch, block, dodge, and move, with the objective being to deplete the Electric Shield’s “HP” to zero. Once it’s gone, you can switch to Carmelita and start unloading her Shock Pistol at Bark and whittle away at his health. Once his health goes down 25%, Bark will bring up another Electric Shield and the process begins again. While fighting against Knuckles, he’ll start off with just punching, then jabbing quickly (75%), throwing uppercuts (50%), and finally fake-outs (25%). And while fighting against Carmelita, he hide more often and throw stuff at you the more health he loses.
*Once Bark is defeated*
Bark: “I may have lost… but Eggman is still winning…”
-----
Outro Cutscene:
Sly: “After knocking out Bark, the court deemed Thaddeus as not guilty for the crime and arrested that polar bear on the spot. For both the crime and destroying the courthouse, Bark was to be sentenced to death! But we couldn’t let that happen, both to keep the timestream stable and because we can’t allow anyone from Sonic’s universe to die in our world, so we managed to convince the law to let us apprehend Bark and then toss him back into Sonic’s world. After having to solve that whole mystery, we all decided to stick around with Thaddeus for a bit and get some downtime. With the way Eggman and his goons operated so far, we need all the energy we can get. Besides, with time travel, it’s never too late to do anything.
Sly: “Heh, Thaddius sure is spending quite a bit of time with Annis, talking about cases and the like. Guess he must of convinced the Fox family to go into law enforcement.”
Next Time: Sly and Sonic batten down the hatches in the 17th Century Caribbean.
Well, today was pretty good, if not terribly thrilling it was a good combination of relaxing and productive. Slept in which was lovely, and woke up at approximately 12:17 pm. Had some breakfast and hung out for a little while, then finalized my list and prepared for my trek to target. I needed to get gas bottle refills for my sodastream, so I had to go across town to target instead of just going to the grocery store right around the block from me, and while I'm there I might as well do my grocery shopping. It's a fine balance of catching buses at the right time to get there, there's like no one convenient way to get there, it has to be a combination of a few. It's basically southeast of me, and I have to find a way south and a way east. It's further south, so I normally end up taking a bus south and walking east, which isn't bad (it's about the same as my trek to the train for school). Of course it's absolutely gorgeous out today and I took my light jacket off and was just in a t shirt walking there and it was so glorious, I can't believe this is January when a few weeks ago it was below 20. I'm sure it won't last, but it's nice while it happen. So of course absolutely everyone is out and about today. Get to target, get my sodastream refills and then go to the grocery section. I had to stop myself from looking at the clothing because I literally have an overflowing dresser because I have SO much damn clothing it's really a problem, lol. They did have super cute pajama pants though. So I went through my list, which was mostly like, breakfast shit, instant meal shit, snack shit, and ice cream. That was basically it lol. I have what I need to make some big meals at some point, I just haven't really had a chance to make them yet, but I did pick up some more pasta and that sauce that goes really amazing with chicken and is super easy to make, so that should be good. And I basically just needed snacks for study fuel purposes, so those I got. One of my things of blueberries spilled off the check out belt while I was bagging, so I lost that haha but I said it was ok I still had one left and didn't really need the other. Whenever I bring my grocery cart thing with me and start filling it up at the checkout the person working it almost always comments like "wow, that thing is huge" because it fits a shit ton of groceries in it and it's super helpful haha, another good target purchase. On the way back managed to catch buses both ways, and when I got home I put everything away and then dove into my reading. I started with the reading for my nonprofit class since that's the first one of the week, but after like half an hour (and like 10 pages) I was quickly losing interest because it's just sooooo dry, like its like "ten effective strategies to managing the board of your nonprofit" like okay that's great but it's not particularly knowledge I need in my life right now...? And it's not like we're gonna get cold called on it because it's not that kind of class or reading really, so I started just skimming the paragraphs and headers for another like 15 minutes until I was through. I moved to trial ad next, but it turns out there wasn't any reading (it just said to review last week's reading, probably because it was like 200 pages) so I just had to do the problems we were assigned. So for this week I got assigned as the witness for one problem and the cross for another. The witness one is pretty basic, it's a contract case about a car purchase, not too much for me to have to know there. The one I'm crossing is a bit more complicated, mostly because it's under the header of "refreshing recollection" (which is when your witness can't remember their shit on the stand and you have to get something to remind them) but then for cross was like "oh assume he changed his statement, cross him on it" which brings things into impeachment territory and like, I know the mechanics of it from mock trial but that's kind of heading into a whole new world of stuff that I'm not all that certain in, lol. I'm sure it'll be fine, I'm not particularly worried, but it'll be interesting at least. Done with that I moved on to crim pro, figuring if I finish my reading today I can work on my larc assignment tomorrow (and not just because I really dread doing larc and want to put it off as long as possible) since I know I'll need more time for it, and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to get done on it during the week because my only real free day is Wednesday and I do have some other things to do then as well. Crim pro was fine, reading about case screening on a prosecutors level, judicial level, and grand jury level. The grand jury stuff was interesting, came with a lot of statistics of just how much grand juries indict, and how if a prosecutor doesn't want them to indict they almost never will, but prosecutors can use it as an excuse to not pursue a case they want to drop (think: Michael Brown and other situations where grand juries inexplicably failed to bring charges: it wasn't the grand jury's fault). So that was intriguing. I finished by 7:45, which was perfect because I wanted to be done by 8. I then worked on making some muffins, I was looking through a few similar recipes, basically all blueberry oatmeal muffins made with Greek yogurt, so I tried a new one today that was similar to the ones I made last week but didn't include any banana (I don't normally keep banana around anyway). They were the ones with the least amount of sugar, in fact they just use honey, so they didn't come out very sweet but they were still good. I was bad and didn't read the full blog post though that said not to use paper liners for them because they're low fat and will stick to the liners, but oh well I'll just have to peel them off. When I finished with those I turned on the last two episodes of a series of unfortunate events which I didn't find terribly entertaining, sadly, episodes 3-6 were definitely the best ones. The story just kind of went blah for me and the ending felt rather unsatisfactory just because it wasn't very certain by any means. Like I get it, they're not gonna have a happy ending, that's kind of the point of the whole thing, but it just felt like a very random place to close the series, or the season at least. I guess we'll see if it gets more episodes from here, I'd probably be willing to watch them. Somewhere along the line my roommate came home, and after those finished I had nothing left to watch so I let her pick and we wound up watching some episodes of the last season of the office, most of which I couldn't recall watching before. They were quite funny, I really did enjoy them. It was a good show in its time for sure, I wish we still had more comedies like it on tv instead of shit like the Big Bang theory that's just obnoxious. While watching we discussed different things, mostly the women's March and how sad we were that we didn't get to go. I don't know in all honestly if it would've been the best decision for me to go, I think I would feel awkward with some of it for certain reasons, but it at least made me sad to see it being all awesome and not being able to be there. 250,000 people showed up here in Chi, which is pretty amazing given that Thursday they were expecting like 50,000 (and that was up from like 25,000 on Tuesday). So we clearly had a good turn out. I love my city and how we all stick together so much, even if the government fails us we'll hold you accountable. I keep thinking back to how last year when I was walking home the police were arresting some people in a park, and across the street there was a very noticeable group of people standing there and very clearly watching, several with their phones on recording. To me, the message was very clear: we're watching, and if you don't hold yourselves accountable we will. And I feel like that goes for a lot of stuff in this city and I just love it. I was also talking with some people on Twitter about going to the heroes vs villains fan fest in Chicago at the end of March, which happens to fall on my birthday, and I think it would be super awesome to go, I just have to figure out a cosplay and obtain one, which is probably gonna end up being from some internet source since I have neither the time nor skills to make one myself lol. So we'll see what happens there. Oh, and the other thing was my 711 license came in the mail today, so I can officially start stepping up in court this week which is both awesome and completely terrifying, but I'm choosing to be excited about it (for now, anyway, things may change in the moments before it happens). But yeah, that was about it for me today. Church in the morning, hopefully service then nursery so I actually get to be in the service, it's been wayyyyyy too long and I miss hearing my pastor speak. Okay, sleep now being that I have to wake up in less than 7 hours. Goodnight my loves. Sleep tight.
A Young American Dies in Paraguay: Mushroom Tea, Murder, Rape, and a Cover-Up
ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay—Luis Villamayor’s sleepless night began like so many do for parents worrying about a child.
Hours earlier, he had spoken to his son by phone. Sixteen-year-old Alex Villamayor was spending the weekend at the family ranch of one of his best friends, 400 miles away in Obligado, when things got rowdy. Alex, René Hofstetter, 18, and Alain Jacks Díaz de Bedoya, 16, were drinking mushroom tea alone in the house. René's mother and father had promised to be at the ranch, but they were six hours away.
Luis offered to pick him up but Alex assured his father everything was fine. Then, the line got cut off. Luis called him back.
No answer.
He added minutes to Alex’s phone and called him again.
No answer.
He called René’s mother, who assured him everything was fine. Their ranch hand, Matthias Wilbs, was sent to check on the boys in the main house.
Then, the call came at 7:55 the next morning. René was crying.
“Tio, Alex shot himself,” he said.
“Wait, what? What do you mean?” said Luis.
Luis dropped the phone and ran barefoot down the street to the house of his ex-wife, Alex’s mother. He made it only as far as the gate before he collapsed and a neighbor came to help.
Puning Luk, Alex’s mother, was not there. She was teaching English that Saturday morning when she heard about her son’s death. She was so distraught, her student had to drive her home. When she arrived, Alex’s younger brother Daniel, 11, was sprawled on the stairs crying. He clung to his mother. Another child, 21-year-old Milagros, was in tears as well. She couldn’t shake the image of her father, who made his reputation as a tough criminal lawyer and former Paraguayan congressman, weak at the knees outside their gate.
“That was a horrible moment,” Luis told The Daily Beast.
By the time Puning and Luis got to their son, he was already in a body bag.
“I so badly wanted to hold him, I couldn’t believe it was my son lying on the table,” she said. Then, she asked the nurse to turn on the air-conditioning “to keep the flies away from my son.”
“Puning is the best mother I have met,” said Luis, her ex-husband. “She always had energy, enthusiasm, and patience for all of them. And yet they took her boy away in such a horrible way. May the Lord forgive them.”
It’s been over two and a half years since Puning and Luis lost their son and still there has been no trial, but the story has captivated the nation of Paraguay. Just this past Thursday, the trial date was postponed to February 19, 2018, a third time. The last time it was postponed was in June 2017.
Much has transpired since Alex’s death in a land known for its social inequality and judicial corruption and impunity. The suspected suicide was changed to a murder probe; the first district attorney on the case was removed and charged with obstruction of justice; René was arrested and jailed after fleeing to Germany; Alain was indicted and quickly acquitted; Paraguay has twice declined to have the FBI involved in the investigation—and new evidence has revealed for the first time the brutality of Alex’s murder.
Friends and family said Alex was kind, intelligent, thoughtful, and social. His favorite U.S. president was Abraham Lincoln and he loved to cook, learn languages, play video games, dress well, and make people feel comfortable.
“Alex was the kind of person you call to fix a problem or just to talk,” said Humberto del Valle, 20, a high school friend from Pan American International School (PAIS) in Paraguay. “He was a guy you could talk to for hours.”
Carlos Pedroza, 20, met Alex at PAIS where they became fast friends. “Alex wasn’t hated by anyone. He was so fun to talk with, always ending every conversation making us laugh,” he said.
“He had a thirst for history, trivial information, and jokes,” said Puning. “He possessed a high level of emotional intelligence.”
When René needed a mechanic, Alex was the first to find him one. When Alain needed help studying, Alex was ready to share his knowledge.
Schoolmate Renato Rolon, 20, remembers that Alex had a funny obsession with the number 23. They began to notice the number everywhere they looked and exchanged photos of it. Alex had a file devoted to it called “23.”
“It was like the magic number of our group,” he said, referring the clique of boys from school that included René and Alain.
On his way home from Alex’s memorial, Rolon said he noticed the number 23 in his father’s car. The clock read 10:23 p.m., the thermometer read 23 Celsius, and the odometer’s last two numbers read 23. “In that second, the moment I saw all that, I started crying because for me, it was like a message from him saying, ‘I’m in heaven, I’m okay.’”
Alex’s favorite song was “How To Save a Life” by The Fray, a band he went to see with his aunt, Kim Luk.
Kim, who lives in Maryland and is spearheading efforts to bring justice to Alex, said he was a gentle soul who was the light of everyone’s life.
“Alex and I were so close. He was such an amazing kid, I can’t even tell you,” said Kim. “We miss him every single day.”
But Luis Villamayor recalls there were times that Alex was the butt of some cruel jokes by some friends of his, including René and Alain. One time, Alex went to a house party and left with a shaved head. He had passed out after drinking beer for the first time, said Luis, and they shaved off all his hair. “That really hurt Alex,” he said. Another time, some friends put Alex on top of a Volkswagen bug and recorded it. Luis found it abusive.
Two weeks before Alex was murdered, Kim put his tie over the shirt they bought together and shined his shoes for his high school commencement. He graduated with honors. That night she waltzed with him. A couple of days later, she said to Alex, “I’ll see you back in the U.S.”
Alex was going to live with her while he attended Montgomery College to study business management. His brother Antonio also studied there and his parents were graduates. His brother was so excited about his arrival to in the U.S., he had posted a long message about it online.
That was the last time Kim saw Alex.
While Alex’s graduating class made plans to go to Cancun that summer in 2015, a trip he and his mother decided against because it was costly, Alex went to René’s ranch instead.
On Thursday, June 25, 2015, Alex took a bus with Alain from the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion, to Obligado.
“I thought it would be good for him to go to the ranch and have some fun,” said Puning Luk. “I never imagined in a million years he was going to be beaten, raped and killed by his friends.”
The family was skeptical from the onset about Alex’s alleged suicide on Saturday, June 27. Alex was an emotionally mature young man without any signs of psychological issues. He loved his family and was equally loved, they say. There were no signs he was contemplating taking his own life.
His friends shared the sentiment.
Rolon’s initial reaction to the news was that it couldn’t be possible. “Imagine a happy person you know with a good, happy life. You can’t process the idea of a suicide or a homicide,” he said.
“I couldn’t understand it at first,” said Pedroza. When he gathered with classmates at a house where they heard Alex had committed suicide, he immediately became suspicious. “I think there are friends who aren’t talking.”
Then, the cracks in the case began to appear.
That Saturday night, the DA, Olga Araujo, told the Villamayor family that she concluded it was a suicide, without conducting any standard investigative procedures. That same night at the morgue, Andy Fernandez, the Villamayor’s family friend and lawyer who identified Alex’s body, was told by a forensic photographer that the wound patterns weren’t consistent with suicide.
Then came some of the most compelling evidence. Photos from the crime scene showed a gunshot wound to the right of Alex’s head while the gun was in his left hand.
“That’s physically impossible to shoot yourself in the right side of your head with your left hand,” says Fernandez, who is now on the Villamayor’s legal team.
The first thing Puning noticed in the photos were Alex’s clothes. “Those aren’t his clothes,” she said. “Why is he wearing someone else’s clothes?” In the photos, Alex had a black pair of sweatpants on that were too big on him.
The tallest boy there that night was Alain, Fernandez said.
“This case was so botched up from the very beginning,” said Kim.
When law enforcement tested the clothes and skin of Alex, René, Alain, and Matthias it revealed there was no gunshot residue.
“That’s proof he didn’t kill himself,” said Fernandez. “If he killed himself, it would be everywhere. In his hair, on his skin.” But the discovery raises other questions.
Alex’s friend Pedroza says the weekend Alex was at the ranch, he shared videos with him of Alex, René, and Alain shooting at eggs and other things. Fernandez said that it was impossible for there to be no traces of gunshot residue on Alain and René if they were shooting guns the day before.
“Someone taught them how to create a suicide scene,” he said, and before authorities got there. “They washed up.”
In fact, phone records belonging to René and his ranch hand Wilbs reveal that René called his father over 50 times starting at 3:00 a.m., even though in their testimony, René and Alain said they both woke up at 6:00 a.m. to find that Alex had taken his life outside on the deck near the pool.
The records also reveal that just before 6:00 a.m., a call was made to a former police officer who, Fernandez believed, helped them create the scene and clean up.
A ballistic test showed that the gun in Alex’s hand had not been fired in a long time.
Armed with the puzzling new evidence, authorities approached the ranch hand Wilbs who eventually confessed to tampering with the crime scene. He told authorities he moved Alex’s body and put another gun in his hand.
But he also added something else: he said he did all this to protect René. When authorities revisited the phone records, they saw that Wilbs had also spoken to René’s father that night. René’s father, in hiding, is currently indicted on charges related to the alleged coverup and illegal gun possession.
When a second autopsy report was conducted, it revealed additional evidence that hadn’t been reported earlier. Alex had been brutally physically abused. The medical examiner found deep bruising all over his body, including his genital area. Marks on his body made by an object like a stick revealed the possibility of torture. The autopsy report also revealed that semen was found in his anus.
DNA results often take weeks, but this time they took seven months, Fernandez says, and the result was surprising–the semen was Alex’s own.
“There’s no record in this world that shows someone had semen in his own body,” Fernandez said.
In February, the prosecution will argue that that sometime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., Alex was murdered. Prior to that, he was raped and tortured.
“I’m not sure when or why they tortured him. That’s the part of the story I can’t understand,” said Fernandez.
Although Alain was indicted for murder over two years ago, he was acquitted less than a month later before the investigation had been completed. René and Wilbs are currently in prison awaiting trial for premeditated murder.
“I am shell-shocked,” says Luis about what happened. “I never thought that such a thing would happen in René and Alain’s company. Alex was like a kid-brother to them. They were supposed to take care of him, not hurt him.”
Alex has not been properly buried. Kim said they were hoping the FBI could still assist them in the investigation.
“I have two objectives. One is to bring justice to our family,” said Kim. Four months after she came home following Alex’s death, Kim began working with Maryland Congressman (now Senator) Chris Van Hollen and Sen. Ben Cardin to see what can be done.
Her other objective is to change the laws in the United States so that no American citizen can be murdered without the FBI getting involved. “More people have to understand what happens to you when you travel overseas,” Kim told The Daily Beast.“We’re in an administration right now that is seeking Americans first. This is a perfect time for us to change laws.”
Kim says she and the family can forgive in order to move on, but she needs to know what happened… but, then, she thinks she may never know.
“I have to put away the thought that we’re going to know what truly happened. It’s the truth and the lies and you meet somewhere in the middle,” said Kim.
A Young American Dies in Paraguay: Mushroom Tea, Murder, Rape, and a Cover-Up
ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay—Luis Villamayor’s sleepless night began like so many do for parents worrying about a child.
Hours earlier, he had spoken to his son by phone. Sixteen-year-old Alex Villamayor was spending the weekend at the family ranch of one of his best friends, 400 miles away in Obligado, when things got rowdy. Alex, René Hofstetter, 18, and Alain Jacks Díaz de Bedoya, 16, were drinking mushroom tea alone in the house. René's mother and father had promised to be at the ranch, but they were six hours away.
Luis offered to pick him up but Alex assured his father everything was fine. Then, the line got cut off. Luis called him back.
No answer.
He added minutes to Alex’s phone and called him again.
No answer.
He called René’s mother, who assured him everything was fine. Their ranch hand, Matthias Wilbs, was sent to check on the boys in the main house.
Then, the call came at 7:55 the next morning. René was crying.
“Tio, Alex shot himself,” he said.
“Wait, what? What do you mean?” said Luis.
Luis dropped the phone and ran barefoot down the street to the house of his ex-wife, Alex’s mother. He made it only as far as the gate before he collapsed and a neighbor came to help.
Puning Luk, Alex’s mother, was not there. She was teaching English that Saturday morning when she heard about her son’s death. She was so distraught, her student had to drive her home. When she arrived, Alex’s younger brother Daniel, 11, was sprawled on the stairs crying. He clung to his mother. Another child, 21-year-old Milagros, was in tears as well. She couldn’t shake the image of her father, who made his reputation as a tough criminal lawyer and former Paraguayan congressman, weak at the knees outside their gate.
“That was a horrible moment,” Luis told The Daily Beast.
By the time Puning and Luis got to their son, he was already in a body bag.
“I so badly wanted to hold him, I couldn’t believe it was my son lying on the table,” she said. Then, she asked the nurse to turn on the air-conditioning “to keep the flies away from my son.”
Shantaram is set in the underworld of contemporary India, where an escaped convict from Australia named Lin is hiding out. He searches for love while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums and simultaneously working for the Bombay mafia.
World’s Cheapest Destinations
By Tim Leffel
The thought that exotic travel has to break the bank is an assumption as sad as it is untrue, and Leffel proves it in The World’s Cheapest Destinations. Active storytelling and honest facts on not only where to go but how to travel once you get there are the driving factor here.
The key takeaway from this book is that proper research and planning, along with a willingness to see a culture for what it really is, can save you a fortune. Oh, and don’t hesitate to bargain – just be respectful when you do so.
My Wall 9 & 10
9          I take the subway with my wall
I took the 1 train. No, I think it was the R train. Maybe it was the N. Yes, it had to be the N. It was hard to get through the turnstile so I used the emergency gate and the siren went off but nobody cared as usual. I basically pushed myself to through the rush hour crowd.  I saw open mouths and faces filled with wonder, maybe even a little fear. I felt someone grab my hand which was hanging over my wall. “Who are you, man? Who are you? Are you new to New York? Do you speak English? Are you a refugee? Can I help you?” I couldn’t see the man’s face (I was crammed on the crowded subway platform). He sounded friendly enough, but as I’ve said before, everyone in America is deeply suspicious, and they should be. Not everyone is your friend. “I’m okay,” I said. “I’m not a refugee. Just point me towards the subway car. That’s all I need.” I thought it was it ironic that as an American patriot intent upon making us great again I was co fused as - a foreigner. The guy said softly (so I couldn't hear?) to a woman (a colleague?) beside him, “This is a refugee. We have to give him sanctuary. He is escaping a brutal regime. He’ll be reported if we don’t, especially with the new administration in Washington.” "Yes. He's dead meat." “I am not a refugee! I'm an American! I'm an American!" I yelled although my wall made it very hard to understand me. “He says he’s a performance artist, man,” a skinny guy dressed all in black said. "Yeah, far out. Dig it." “Yeah, I have seen him out in Bushwick. And, he played in some band in Red Hook.” "Cool. Yeah. Caught it." Then I heard a woman’s voice. I could tell from her accent she wasn't a New Yorker. “This guy’s so wild! I love this city! Can we take a selfie with you?” “I don’t have time,” I said. “I have to get away. People are chasing me and they want to hurt me. Please.” The man who thought I was a refugee by this time was standing on a bench and peering down into my wall. “What do you have to run away from?” he asked. “Let her take a selfie. It's harmless, and then I will find you a safe place where no one can find you and my organization can take you back to your country.” “I’m from Ohio! I'm American!" I screeched. They were missing the whole point of my quintessentially American invention. “Sure, everyone is – and that’s the point," he answered slowly with that tone and phrasing they use when talking to animals, old people, and immigrants who don't know English. "Let her just take a selfie with you and then we can leave. I know how hard this must be for you. Even if she takes a picture your face, it won’t be visible from the outside so you don’t have to worry about being identified by the death squads.” "The only death squads after me flip burgers and make Greek salads!" But this do gooder had a point.  He captured a key selling point of my wall - it can keep me out of sight, yet in plain sight. He got it. People crowded. around me and my wall. I was starting to understand that just seeing my wall, the fact that I had actually created a wall around me, a wall similar to what everyone was hearing about 24/7, would change America and the world. I made "the ever present American wall manifest," is how a cult described it. “Who the fuck are you?” a tall man in a suit with a briefcase snapped. He elbowed me. "Who do you think you are pushing ahead of? Wait your turn like everyone else.  There things called lines in this country. Take your turn like everyone else.” (I think I was encountering what TV pundits at the time were calling white rage, but I wasn’t sure.) I heard so many voices outside my wall. They merged at times into a single wild voice. “I think that’s really cool, man. I think it’s really fucking outta sight.” "I'm down with Wall Man!" “Yeah, I like it a lot. It looks good on you." “Do you study fashion?” I couldn’t understand all the accents. People were touching my wall.  A chanting woman in a saffron robe tried to get her arms around the wall so she could hug me. “You need love, my friend. You need revolutionary love.” A man with thinning red hair, whispered, “I was meant to be close to someone like you. Want to party, killer?" I was getting really scared. I didn’t know how much constant physical pressure my wall would be able to take. I forced myself to think of the secret Stayaway website I had hacked into, and the furious cabbies bouncing harmlessly like annoying insects in all directions unable to make a dent in the material. This calmed me, but I was getting panicky. I was backed into a doo-wop group on the platform. They were singing songs by the Drifters. I started to sing along with them. I even did a few of the moves I practiced with Freedom on Saturday morning when I listened to Felix Hernandez on Rhythm Review. Money - heaps of it - was being thrown at me. “You want to join our group, brother?” one of the singers asked as we finished a number. "I don't know who you are but it's been raining money since you turned up." “Sorry, I have to take the train!” I shouted. What I thought would be an escape on the subway was turning into another public commotion except this was on a narrow subway platform. I knew it was only a matter of time until everything would come crashing down around my planned escape. My fame was beginning.
10        I am arrested
“Stop! Stay where are you are!” a voice commanded. Two police officers. A tall woman, and a burly young man, seemed intent upon stopping my movement. "Officers, all I want to do is get on the subway.” They couldn’t hear me, or didn’t want to, I wasn’t sure. “Hands in the air!” How did they know that was the only direction I could put my hands? I aimed them towards the ceiling. The cops had moved away the crowd. Several other officers arrived. I was perspiring very heavily even though it was cold. “Show us your ID,” the woman cop said. I noticed she wore small hooped gold earrings. It’s hard to reach into your pockets when you have on a wall. I tried though. But I was too slow. “You’re under arrest! Up against that wall.” I heard radios crackling. Someone said, “We got a whack job.” An express train boomed past, boots echoed on the platform. “I haven’t done anything wrong,” I said. “I’m exercising my constitutional right -- to wear a wall. It’s just like the right bear arms.” “He’s armed!” the male cop screamed. He looked petrified. Guns were drawn. “Back up! Back up!” “Keep your fucking hands in the air where I can see them!” The two newly arrived police officers, who looked even more afraid than I was, pushed me into a corner of the subway platform, away from the commuters, many of whom seemed to be rallying to my cause. “Show us your hands now!” I was being pushed and pulled and I was barely able to stand under the weight of the police bodies. I was afraid I might get shot, even unintentionally. Remember, I wasn’t sure if my wall was bullet proof. I suspected it was, but I hadn’t seen any videos of bullets, like the hordes of cursing cabbies, bouncing off the surface of the Stayaway material. How could I have not checked on this critical fact? (Note to self and world- even the truly great must worry over every detail otherwise their grand vision will never come to be.)
I found my driver’s license from Ohio and handed it over the wall. "Take off your fucking costume right now,” the young male cop said with disgust. “Come on, asshole. Take off the clown suit – you’re not funny. You’re creating a public disturbance and endangering hundreds of people.” “This is my wall and I’m entitled to wear it,” I replied. I wasn't disrespectful. I was asserting my rights as an American citizen. This would later be one of the statements that endeared me to very conservative groups, such as the Tea Party. (Oddly, civil libertarians and revolutionary leftists also found it attraction.) “Take that shit off right now and show us your face,” the Latina officer said. She had her hand on her gun, and she was much bigger than me. “Don’t shoot!” I shouted. Then I heard several people from around me yell. "Stop shooting people!” “Black lives matter!” “Stop the hate! Stop the violence!” “Every life matters! Leave him alone!” “Yeah, this is New York, man.” "Everybody's packing something." “He’s just wearing what he wants!” “Leave him alone, he’s just another New York freak.” "That's why people visit New York." "Let him do what he wants – this is America!" “No, fuck you! Go ahead and shoot him so I can get it on Facebook Live on my cell phone!  I’m gonna be famous. Go ahead -- shoot him!  Shoot him, guys!  It'll be all over the media in an hour." I was becoming dizzy again. My wall was light, as you know, because of my planning and the fabrication process, but the reaction to it was disorienting. It was hard to react to the spontaneous explosion on Day 1. “This is the last time I tell you. Take off your costume, or else we’re going to take you in.” I started to unlock the shoulder apparatus that held up my wall, when I felt both police officers pushing me again against the wall. They couldn’t get my wrists into handcuffs, so they ended up putting my ankles in handcuffs. (Later, the tabloids, described my arrest as the first time anyone in New York had been “foot cuffed.” The famous "Tooties on Trial" headline with a full-page photo of my handcuffed ankles became as famous a headline as "Ford to City - Drop Dead." Celebrity found me, as I had dreamed. I hobbled to the local police precinct with police officers, speaking into the mics to their dispatcher. They practically carried me up the steps to the street. People shouted support, some spit at me and cursed. The police officers were trained to ignore crowd abuse. One cop with gray hair, I couldn’t tell his rank but he looked important, shook his head and smiled as they dragged me out of the subway. Panting, four five cops hoisted me up the final subway steps.  Since I couldn’t fit into the backseat of a police car with my wall, they conveniently had a van meet us at the curb. I was arrested. They read me my rights in the presence of my wall. My future seemed dim, indeed.
