1974 Pontiac Grand Ville

1974 Pontiac Grand Ville

1974 Pontiac Grand Ville
The Pontiac Grand Ville is a full-size car that was a sub-series trim package for the Pontiac Bonneville from 1971 to 1975, which had served as Pontiac's top-trim model since 1958 while remaining below the top level Pontiac Grand Prix
The Bonneville name remained but was now downgraded, and in effect replaced the Pontiac Executive. The Grand Ville and Bonneville shared a number of trim and design elements that distinguished them from the Catalina, and the 1971-72 Grand Villes were built on a stretched-wheelbase version of the GM "B" platform that nevertheless had identical interior dimensions to all other full-size Pontiacs.
In addition to more luxurious interior trimmings, the Grand Ville had distinctive chrome trim at the front and rear to set it apart from the rest of the Pontiac line. Between 1971 and 1974 Grand Ville hardtops featured more upright "formal" C-pillar and backlight treatments that were similar to those found on contemporary GM "C" platform cars (Oldsmobile Ninety Eight and Buick Electra) and not shared with the Bonneville or Catalina. For 1974 only, the Grand Ville had unique parking lights which wrapped around the corner of the front fender. The car was often sold with deluxe appearance options, such as sport wheels and vinyl tops. Rear fender skirts were featured on the 1973 to 1975 models.
Standard equipment on Grand Ville models included a 455 cubic-inch V8 (for 1975, a 400 cubic-inch V8 was standard and the 455 optional), Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, power steering and power front disc brakes. Popular options included air conditioning, power windows and driver's seat, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, AM/FM stereo with tape deck and much more. One of the rarest options available on Grand Villes and other full-sized Pontiacs during this period was the adjustable brake and accelerator pedals offered from 1974 to 1976.
The Grand Ville enjoyed moderate success from 1971 to 1973. However, the oil crisis of late 1973 and early 1974 led to gasoline shortages, long lines at filling stations, and high fuel prices. These factors sharply cut into full-sized car sales in 1974 as buyers moved towards smaller cars. For 1975, the Grand Ville became the Grand Ville Brougham and included more standard equipment than in previous years, such as power windows and a carpeted trunk. This would be the final year for the Grand Ville series, which included Pontiac's last convertible until 1983. For 1976, the Grand Ville nameplate was dropped and the lineup was renamed Bonneville Brougham, returning that nameplate back to its former full-size top trim level status.
Grand Ville convertibles were rare, with production never exceeding 5,000 units per year during the model run. From 1973 to 1975 the Grand Ville was Pontiac's only full-size convertible offering; 1971 and 1972 full-size Pontiac convertibles were offered in the entry level Catalina line as well. (There were no convertible Bonnevilles after the 1970 model year.) The rarest of the Grand Ville convertibles was the 1971 model with just under 1,800 examples built. The 1975 model was the most plentiful with just over 4,500 cars built, as being the final year of production increased demand. The Grand Ville convertible had the lowest production amongst its corporate cousins, the Oldsmobile 88 Royale, Buick Centurion and the Chevrolet Caprice Classic convertible lines.
Starting with 1973 through 1975 the Grand Ville was offered as a station wagon as the Grand Safari.

It’s a ‘72 Buick Centurion ragtop.  Unlike the LeSabre, these didn’t have the portholes or hood slots.  That color is called Flame Orange, and we think it would have been an extra-cost special order item, only being available at Buick on the Special and Skylark.

Michael Savage New Canaan Ten Traditional Muscle Vehicles
With the appeal of motion pictures like The Fast as well as The Furious, Gone in Sixty Seconds as well as The last Trip, there has been some reference to the great old muscular tissue vehicles which were commemorated in movies like Bullit, Vanishing Point and also naturally The Dukes of Hazzard collection. This top 10 listing looks at several of the muscle auto icons born from the late 60's and also very early 70's.
The major measure of these autos is power, with Brake Steed Power (bhp) being the term flung around most frequently. What this describes is the power released by the engine before the transmission, generator, differential, water pump, and also various other parts sap its power. If you are utilized to Kilowatts, after that think about that 250kw translates to 335.26 bhp.
 The 1969 Pontiac GTO
Conceptualised to gain attract the more youthful market, Pontiac placed a 6.3 litre V8 engine into the midsized Tempest shell, creating a cheap rapid car. To the shock of Pontiac's advertising and marketing group the GTO became massively popular and also in 1969 they fitted it with a 6.5 litre V8 which might kick out 366bhp. The Judge was birthed.
 The 1970 Buick GSX
Michael Savage New Canaan
Once again the concept right here was to squash a beast of an engine right into a midsized body, in this instance the Buick Skylark. In 1967 the Buick GS came to be recognised as a standalone design available as a sedan and convertible.
The 1970 version was provided an impressive 7.5 litre engine efficient in producing 400bhp. The GSX body can be found in yellow or white just, including in the photo which made this cars and truck an unique classic.
 The 1967 Chevrolet Camaro
There were different options available to those buying a very first generation Camaro, the Z28 bundle being one of the most interesting. With a 4.9 litre engine, power steering, disc brakes on the front and a four speed hands-on gearbox, the Z28 was produced racing - creating up to 400bhp.
 The Plymouth Roadrunner
Developed to defeat 14 secs over a quarter mile, the Plymouth Roadrunner was stripped down to the bare fundamentals, sacrificing also the rugs in order to make this into a monster of a maker. It included a beefed up guiding, brake and shock absorber and a 6.3 litre engine which pressed 335bhp. An optional boost originated from the 7.0 litre version's 425bhp.
 The Dodge Opposition
Hitting the market in 1970, the Dodge Opposition was a hit from the get go, offering greater than 80,000 in the first year. Although numerous alternatives were provided, the R/T is the model which draws in one of the most interest with its 7.0 litre Hemi engine rejecting 425bhp. Later on designs lost the story, with the '72 model going down to a meager 240bhp. See the Challenger in the cult timeless flick, Vanishing Factor.
 The 1966 Ford Fairlane GT
Introduced in '62 with a 3.6 litre V8, the Ford Fairlane was provided a transformation in 1966, total with a 6.4 litre engine capable of 335bhp. As if this were inadequate they chose to upgrade to a 7.0 litre NASCAR engine with 435bhp. Rigid front suspension and also disc brakes provided the vehicle much better taking care of, and the brute power kicked the dial over 60mph (100km/h) in six seconds.
 Oldsmobile 442
Michael Savage New Canaan
The Cutlass model was outfitted with a cops spec engine with the ability of 310bhp. The 442 refers to the four barrel carburettor, four speed hands-on gear box and the twin exhausts. The 442 had a credibility for its handling when contrasted to various other muscle mass autos, many thanks to its enhanced springs, shocks as well as the calming safety of an anti-roll bar.
The 1968 version was redesigned as a hot sports car, with a 7.5 litre block blowing up 390bhp.
 Plymouth Barracuda
Although the Barracuda was launched in 1964, simply a couple of weeks before the Ford Mustang, it was not till 1970 that Plymouth obtained larger popularity with attractive lines and also some serious roar under the hood in the kind of a 7.2 litre 390bhp. The various other choice was a smaller sized 7.0 litre Hemi block which knocked senseless some added power at 425bhp!
Despite having an overhauled suspension the power was so much that the 'Cuda gained a credibility for difficult handling.
 The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
The 1965 Chevelle SS sported a 6.5 litre block pushing 375bhp, which was all too much for the front end of the car, making for some pretty terrible handling. Fortunately this was attended to with the revamping of the suspension as well as the addition of disk brakes on the front.
1969 saw the introduction of the leading engine specification, which was included in the El Camio pick-up as well. The 1970 SS was powered by a 7.4 litre V8 with 450bhp drawing the Chevell to 100km/h in just 6 seconds. Later on designs were readjusted for unleaded fuel and also the power result experienced considerably.
 Dodge Battery charger
Bo as well as Battle each other's ride of selection, the Charger was launched in 1966 and some 37,000 autos were offered in the initial year. A 7.0 litre Hemi reputedly rejected around 500bhp, though it was formally rated at 425bhp. This beast reached 100km/h in just 5 and a fifty percent seconds. The Hemi engine choice was available till 1972.

Show what?!
$95.  Oof.  I’m going to just leave that there for a moment…
She’s worth it.
After the gas binge and dollar purge, I drive Sacrebleu over to the parking lot adjacent to the Drive-In.  This is where the actual show will take place, and aside from the DJ already there setting up, I’m first, the first to show up for the show.  It’s probably 6:30am, I park next to a walkway.  After a few minutes thought, I move my car to another spot, backing in, close up on a curb, a ding prevention technique offering maximum space to the passenger side.  I sit in the car for a few minutes, reading before getting out to give Sacrebleu one last wipe down.  Pulling a microfiber towel from the trunk, I give the wheels a bit more attention, then clean the glass, inside and out, along with dusting the dash.  There’s nothing to be done about the little bit of fir needles and such in the footwells, so I leave it be.  Pulling the manuals from the glove box, I arrange them on the passenger seat, for show attendees’ viewing pleasure.
Tumblr media
Preparations complete, it’s 7am, before long another car shows up.  It’s a ‘65 Pontiac GTO, also blue.  I find out later that the owner is a true built-not-bought bucks down guy, he describes how he built a fuel injection setup for it using a Megasquirt controller, selling off the Tri-Power setup it came with to fund it.  He also installed a 5 speed manual transmission.  I come away from the conversation impressed, these are the kinds of people whose understated creativity always astounds me.  A little while later, a gnarly 3rd Gen Firebird Trans Am shows up, parks, and immediately begins puking coolant.  Oh, that girl got HOT.  It’s an Indy Anniversary Edition Pace car, very personalized with side pipes, and such.  The owner pops the hood, and I spot the leak coming from the water outlet at the block.  It’s not the worst, but it’s not great.  The owner of that Firebird is a Character, with a capital C.  He’s fun to talk with, after taking a few minutes to admire his car and commiserate about the car’s cooling woes, I wander off.
The show was posted online as starting at 8am, but doesn’t start until 9am.  More people arrive, and around 9am, registration begins.  We all casually wander over to the registration table set up, keeping at least 6 feet between us.  I can’t tell you if the distance was because of the ‘Rona or the Seattle Chill, 50/50, pick ‘em.  $20 later, I have a goodie bag with a coupon for $5 off at XXX, a voting slip for the three Marques holding the show, and my first (!) dash plaque!  Wow.  This is SO cool.  I’M IN A SHOW!
A later arrival catches my attention, so I follow the car to where the owner decides to park it.  Helping guide him into the spot, I ask him about the car.  It’s a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Brougham, with 61,000 miles on it.  That works out to about…1500 miles per year.  Wow.  What attracted me to the car was it is the last of the A-Body platform cars, before GM switched to the G-Body in 1978.  It represented the end of an era, and the 1973-1977 cars, which have gone for so long without much love or appreciation, are finally starting to get some.  Malaise era cars are maligned by a lot of enthusiasts, as the Domestic Car Manufacturers struggled to comply with Federal Emissions Requirements, resulting in cars that were way down on power and performance.  It’s good to see a preserved survivor of the era being shown.
More cars roll in, a lot of Firebirds, turns out the local Firebird club wanted to really represent.  There was a magnificent 1979 Firebird, a survivor with immaculate paint, fully loaded, sitting on the iconic Snowflake Wheels.  So good, with a 403 Olds in it.  I take multiple laps of the parking lot, chatting with other owners, taking time to stand near my own car, soaking in the appreciation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A 1972 Olds 442 W-30 car showed up early, and the paint color was GORGEOUS.  See for yourself!
Tumblr media
I also came across this magnificent boat, a 1963 Pontiac Bonneville.  It was a 4 speed car, and had either a Tri-Power, or a dual quad carburetor setup on it.  The air cleaner was ENORMOUS.  No photos of the air cleaner, but see the car here…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite Pontiac of the show was a 1970 Firebird, a survivor that looked like it had been daily driven for most of the 51 years it has lived.  The car was rough, and battle scarred, but that was part of the appeal. Under the scuffs and dings and flawed paint and poor repairs, still a car with beautiful lines.  That twin snorkel hood, genuine ram air!
Tumblr media
Finally, the votes were tallied, and awards announced.  Sacrebleu didn’t win.  A 1956 Roadmaster that had been given as a birthday gift 42 years earlier, in 1979 and then lovingly restored, won best Buick.  That’s okay, a trophy would have been nice, it was a great experience regardless.  Oh!  I did win a raffle, for a free Triple X Burger!
