— BASICS
Name: Phillip 'Pip' Reggie Laurence Age / D.O.B.: 31 / 24th March Gender, Pronouns & Sexuality: Cis man, he/him, bisexual  Hometown: New York, NY, USA Affiliation: Civilian, Brotherhood Affiliate Job position: Small forward for the Long Island Nets / Brooklyn Nets Education: BA, University of Alabama Relationship status: Single Children: N/A Positive traits: Brave, loyal, passionate, fun-loving, energetic Negative trait: Stupid, immature, clumsy, headstrong, impulsive
— BIOGRAPHY
The youngest of four siblings, there is a big gap between Pip and his older siblings, who each have a two year gap between them and so naturally he was the baby of the family.
Since he was a child, he has always wanted to fit in. He watched his siblings, along with the people he grew up with, get involved with the beginnings of The Brotherhood.
Even his parents (his mothers, a nurse and a ) offered their home for kids with nowhere to go, or needed somewhere to hide, or just needed some stitches and a warm homemade meal. It was one of those neighbourhoods where kids learned how to survive before they learned how to dream.
But one thing they all agreed on was to keep Pip out of the action, protect him in his own little bubble. His moms, as loving and understanding as they were, believed he was too soft-hearted and wanted him to at least graduate high school. His siblings, especially the eldest, didn’t want him anywhere near it whatsoever. Whenever he showed up, he was turned away and sent home immediately.
So Pip grew up thinking no one ever took him seriously. Granted, he gave them many reasons not to.
During college, he experiences a massive growth spurt (yes, we will pretend he's a basketball player's height). A scout reaches out to him, his high school basketball coach, and his family. There are talks of promise and potential, college basketball programs and even going pro. Pip, despite recognising his own talent, has no interest in it. He wants to join The Brotherhood.
Eventually, his moms convince him to go, but he lacks the discipline whilst he's there. It's a long and difficult journey with his coach. A lot of hard truths and tough love, but he gets there in the end. It was framed as a once in a lifetime opportunity to turn this around for him and his family. Pip believed he could do both.
After being waived from a contract with the 76ers after three years, Pip has been playing in the G League for the past four years, hopping all over the place with two-way contracts and ten day contracts.
He has earned more money than he ever dreamed of, giving back to his family and moving them into a bigger home as well as giving back to The Brotherhood for all their support.
He's known as a rather controversial figure. Outspoken when it comes to activism, a temper on the court and breaking the rules if he feels like it, with a known love for partying which he doesn't care to hide. People have noted he is wasting his potential.
He is at a point in his career where the people who have believed in him and have supported him want to see him back in the NBA, and he knows he is lucky to have people like that by his side, but Pip wants to become more hands on within The Brotherhood. He doesn't just want to be a form of monetary support, but he wants to add real value to the gang. But his siblings continue to get in the way, making it clear to the rest of the gang to keep Pip out of it.
Oh well!
— WANTED CONNECTIONS / PLOTS
OLDER SIBLINGS (3) - All members of the Brotherhood. They still treat Pip like a baby and try to keep him as uninvolved with the gang as possible.

Philadelphia 76ers Acquire Rights to Charles Bassey in 2021 Draft
Tumblr media
On July 29th, 2021, the Philadelphia 76ers traded $2 million in cash considerations to the New Orleans Pelicans for the draft rights of Charles Bassey.
The Philadelphia 76ers came into the 2021 draft with a goal of adding frontcourt depth. The team accomplished that late in the second round with the selection of centers Filip Petrušev (50th overall) and Charles Bassey (53rd).
To draft Bassey, the 76ers sent $2 million in cash to the New Orleans Pelicans. A three-year player at Western Kentucky, Bassey finished his last collegiate season averaging 17.6 PPG on 59% from the field, 11.6 RPG and 3.0 BPG. Known for his great shotblocking ability, he won Conference USA's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
After the draft, Bassey did not participate in Summer League because he couldn't come to an agreement on a contract with the 76ers. The point of contention was the second year of a three-year deal. Bassey's representatives wanted the second year to be fully guaranteed while Philadelphia wanted the second year to be non-guaranteed.
Bassey eventually signed a three-year deal with Philadelphia for $4.3 million. The first year was fully guaranteed, the second year was partially guaranteed and the last year was not guaranteed.
The 76ers were in a state of flux after All-Star Ben Simmons demanded a traded but the 76ers refused to give him up unless they ended up with a significant return. Simmons sat out the entire year due to a back injury and because he was not mentally ready to play.
Without Simmons, the 76ers began the 2021-22 season with an 8-2 record. Soon after, the team hit a rough patch, going 3-9 over the next 12 games to fall to 11-11. Philadelphia was seventh in the East with a 15-15 record but won 16 of its next 20 to reach third in the conference.
With the team at 32-22, the Sixers dealt Simmons, two first round picks, Andre Drummond and Seth Curry to the Brooklyn Nets for its disgruntled star James Harden and Paul Millsap. Harden and Embiid were solid together as Philadelphia went 19-9 the rest of the way.
In Bassey's rookie year, he appeared in 23 NBA games, averaging 3.0 PPG on 63.6% shooting along with 2.7 RPG, 0.7 BPG and 7.3 MPG. The 6-foot-11 center also played in the NBA G League with Philadelphia's affiliate the Delaware Blue Coats, averaging 18.9 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.8 SPG and a league high 3.4 BPG.

Philadelphia finished the 2021-22 season 51-31, good for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers faced the 48-34 Toronto Raptors in the opening round. In the first game, Philadelphia took an 18-point lead at halftime and never looked back, winning 131-111. Embiid had 31 points and 11 rebounds as the 76ers cruised to an easy 112-97 Game Two victory, taking a 2-0 series lead.
Game Three was in Toronto and the Raptors played their best basketball of the series early on. Toronto led by as much as 15 points in the first half, but the 76ers battled back. Both teams traded leads in the fourth quarter. After taking a 95-90 lead with 2:03 left, the Raptors never scored again in the final frame. Philadelphia scored the final five points to send the game to overtime.
In a low-scoring extra period, Embiid (33 points) hit a three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to win the game and give Philadelphia a commanding 3-0 series lead. The fourth game saw Raptors forward Pascal Siakam register 34 points as Toronto held on for a 110-102 win.
In the fifth game, the Raptors built an early 14-point edge and never looked back. Siakam had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Raptors won 103-88. Game Six was initially close in Toronto. Philadelphia took control late, outscoring Toronto 70-36 in the second half and won the series with a 132-97 rout.
The 76ers suffered bad luck when Embiid suffered an orbital fracture and mild concussion late in the blowout win. Bassey did not play in the first round series.
The 76ers advanced to a second round matchup against the Miami Heat with Embiid out indefinitely due to his injury. In the series opener, Heat center Bam Adebayo dominated with 24 points and 12 rebounds as Miami pulled away in the second half with a 106-92 win.
Philadelphia was just 8-for-30 from the three-point line in Game Two as Miami took a 2-0 lead with a 119-103 victory. Embiid returned in Game Three and Philadelphia got hot from three in a decisive 99-79 rout in Philadelphia.
Game Four was closer, but James Harden carried the 76ers with 31 points and Embiid had 24 points and 11 rebounds as Philadelphia evened the series 2-2 with a 116-108 win. Seven Heat players scored in double figures in Game Five as Miami blew out the 76ers 120-85.
Jimmy Butler had 32 points in Game Six for Miami as the Heat closed out the 76ers in Philadelphia 99-90 and won the series in six games. Bassey played in a total of 12 minutes and 29 seconds in the Semifinals. He scored one basket and had five rebounds in that time.
In the 2022 offseason, the 76ers re-signed James Harden. The deal gave them the room to sign players P.J. Tucker and Danuel House. The club also added veteran Montrezl Harrell.
After missing Summer League during his rookie year, Bassey joined Philadelphia's team in 2022. He played six games for the 76ers in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, posting 7.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 1.3 BPG in 20.7 MPG.
In a surprise move, the 76ers waived Bassey and 2020 second round pick Isaiah Joe during 2022 training camp. Bassey played just one preseason game. His contract was guaranteed $74,742 for the 2022-23 season, the second year of his three-year deal. Bassey went on to sign a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

Charles Bassey on the chance to learn as a backup to star Joel Embiid (via NBC Sports Philadelphia):
"I can't wait. Learning from him and him just giving me ideas going into practice and games, it's going to be great learning from a guy that's been in the league for eight or nine years. It's going to be a blessing."
If any of the Sixer veterans have reached out to him after the draft:
"The guy that reached out was Tobias [Harris]. I think, when I got drafted, he texted me 'congratulations' and 'I can’t wait to just start working.' This is a championship team for sure. A team that’s trying to get to the championship, get a title, and that’s the goal, for sure next season.”
On his defensive mindset:
"Defensive teams win championships. I take pride in playing defense."
Where he thinks he can help the 76ers:
"My defensive side of the game. My rebounding, switching on screens, blocking shots. I feel like I'm a guy that can be a rim runner and run down the floor every time and play hard."
76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey on trying to focus on the draft instead of Ben Simmons trade rumors (via The Philadelphia Inquirer):
"Tonight should be about the draft. I’ll just be honest. We got three kids excited about being here. So that’s going to be my focus."

State Of The Sixers As The 2023/24 Season Begins
The Philadelphia 76ers will officially begin thier season on October 27th against the Milwaukee Bucks, so it is only appropriate that we take a dive in to some of the most pressing issues inlvolving the team in 2023/24.
youtube
1. Joel Embiid Is Daring The Sixers To Make A Wrong Move
Back in July of this year, Embiid did an interview with Maverick Carter, in which he appeared to openly contemplate a future away from Philly.
This is probably the only time Embiid has declared this on any public platform, and it comes at a time when there is turmoil, and I can't fault him for doing this given how well it worked for Giannis in the off season.
The response by the Sixers front office though, does not appear to be forthcoming, the only notable additions we've made are Patrick Beverley and Kelly Oubre Jr.
Surely among the things that is not making it easier for him to stay, is the now contentious relationship between the GM and the supposed 2nd star of the Sixers.
youtube
2. James Harden and Darryl Morey Have Been A Public Embarassment
While I have had more than a few laughs at the apparent disintergration of Morey and Harden's once solid working relationship, I think what has been missed is how much of a disatraction this story has been for the Sixers front office.
The Sixers don't look to have truly gone all in on signing anyone, most notably Damian Lillard. The Sixers see, yo ne hedging all thier bets on bringing James Harden back and the result has been inaction in the off season trade market, and Joel sees all of that.
I don't believe Harden is worth a max, and to be fair, the smart move would have been to trade Harden, but the issue is that Harden isn't as valuable of an asset, and the NBA is apparently looking to send a message to Harden who is looking to move in the middle of yet another contract.
To be fair Morey did the right thing by not giving Harden a new deal, but it also means he has to grit his teeth while Harden is on a mission to bismerch his name, and Morey has done so, but he hasn't found a trade partner either.
The relationship between the two maybe be damaged for good but the circumstances do not provide either party with an easy out, given Harden's reputation for not seeing through contracts.
Expect to hear the Sixers being mentioned a lot in trade speculation.
youtube
3. Nick Nurse Isn't Keen On James Harden
In 2019 when Nick Nurse coached the Raptors to an NBA championship in 2019, he was lauded for
In 2023/24, we're going to find out how much of the Raptors title run was really down to Nurse's coaching, because this is as tough of a situation as a coach could possibly be in.
To be fair, Nurse did not help himself by appearing less than enthusiastic about the idea of coaching James Harden.
Besides the fact that the James Harden situation has not been cleared up, and you know that the team Nurse has now, will most certainly not be the team he has later in the season and in the playoffs.
We're about to find out how much championship pedigree Nurse can inject into a team that needs to break through in the post season.
Tumblr media
4. Some Issues I Have With Embiid
I have to be honest, I haven't been too happy with Joel Embiid as of late.
I recognize that making the team aware that he intends to move if they do not surround him with a winning the, because that worked for Giannis in Milwaukee, but I am especially not happy with his decision to join Team USA for the 2024 Olympics.
If you look across the league at Jokic, Giannis and Luka, you have the NBA's best players all proudly representing for thier country in international play and Embiid is missing the trick by opting to join Team USA, as is being reported.
Earlier this year, the speculation was that Embiid would join Team France, and while that makes sense, in as far as language is concerned, I think that both Joel Embiid and Pascal Saiakam are making a mistake by not representing for Cameroon at a time when the country has 2 all star level NBA players to build around.
Most NBA fans won't care, but the game is bigger than just the American market and international guys have the responsibility of growing the game by taking part and representing in these international tournaments.
I understand that being around LeBron, KD and Steph is a good look for a guy that will likely enter free agency in the next two years or so, but Embiid is already very plugged in to those circles, and it's a missed opportunity for Cameroonian international basketball.

Finally Healthy Enough to Compete on the World Stage, Embiid Chooses USA
blacksportsdigest.com · October 9, 2023
Joel Embiid, 29, never seemed destined for international basketball competition. Not that the 7-foot Cameroon native wasn’t capable of playing. Embiid had difficulty staying on the court for his NBA commitment and didn’t want to risk more mileage on his tires.
But times change. Embiid has citizenship in Cameroon and became a citizen of France and the United States in 2022. When it came to decision time for the 2024 Paris Olympic cycle, Embiid decided to play for his adopted home country, the United States. Embiid will have to stay healthy during the upcoming NBA season, but that is a concern for every player.
There is a lot that Embiid can still accomplish in basketball. He hasn’t won an NBA Championship yet and hasn’t come close to playing in one. On the international level, Embiid hasn’t even appeared. If Embiid can stay healthy, there will be plenty of options for Embiid to make waves before he retires.
Embiid Came to the United States at 16
Embiid wouldn’t have considered a basketball career a real possibility as a child. He didn’t even play the sport until he was 15. Embiid dreamed of playing professional volleyball in Europe but pivoted to basketball at age 15. Playing at a camp in Yaounde, Cameroon, he was discovered by NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute.
Mbah a Moute helped mentor Embiid and encouraged him to move to the United States. Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy in Florida. He would later transfer to another school to get more playing time. Embiid helped The Rock School in Gainesville win a state championship, and he would sign to play for Kansas in college.
Embiid’s size made him attractive to colleges all over the United States. Landing with the Jayhawks allowed him to play with top talent.
Why Is Embiid Eligible for Nation Switch?
Since Embiid had never played for Cameroon, he could play with another country. Embiid’s decision not to play with Cameroon stemmed partly from the fact there was nothing guaranteed. Cameroon is one of 24 teams playing for four spots to gain access to the Olympic tournament.
Throughout Cameroon’s basketball history, it hasn’t notched many major accomplishments. Cameroon has never won the African championship but did finish runner-up in 2007 and in fourth place in 2009. During Cameroon’s last attempt to win the African championship, they placed 16th and lost all three games at the tournament.
Injury Issues Limited Time with Jayhawks
Kansas didn’t get much time with Embiid. The Jayhawks were able to pair him with future NBA champion Andrew Wiggins. Embiid scored 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. A stress fracture in his back ended his freshman season in March. The Jayhawks went on to lose in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Embiid declared for the NBA Draft in April of 2014. In June of that year, he had surgery on his foot, ensuring his start to his professional career would be delayed. That delay would last much longer than what many keeping tabs on up-to-date sports news would have anticipated.
Embiid Flirts with Cameroon, Gets on Court With 76ers
Tumblr media
The foot injury Embiid got surgery on would last for two years. Embiid would miss his first two seasons with the Sixers entirely. Embiid did get on the court during the 2016-17 season, averaging 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
In 2017, Embiid was listed on the preliminary roster of AfroBasket for Cameroon. Embiid ultimately declined the invitation. He eventually decided to focus on his NBA career while he was making up his mind about international basketball.
Embiid scored 20 or more points per game in all of his seasons in the league. He was named MVP of the 2022-23 season. The most games Embiid has played as a professional was 68 during the 2021-22 season. During the 2022-23 season, Embiid was chosen as the NBA’s MVP.
Team USA Needs a Spark
Tumblr media
The recent FIBA basketball World Cup saw the United States not medal for the second straight tournament. It’s the first time that has happened since 1970. The Americans needed to improve at the tournament in size and defense. Embiid can provide that.
Seeing Team USA lose has also inspired many veteran NBA players to offer their services for the 2024 Olympics team. Steph Curry and LeBron James have spoken publicly and said they want to be involved. James is a multiple-time gold medalist, while Curry would like to add the championship to his resume.
Embiid wanted to join the team so his son Arthur, 3, could see him represent his country. The United States has a long history of success in men’s basketball at the Olympics. The USA has won 16 times, earning a win over France in the finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Flirting With France
Embiid spent time in France as a child and always loved the country. When looking for a home for international basketball, Embiid seriously looked at the European nation. French fans may have even thought there was a chance he might commit to them. Embiid was offered French citizenship, and he was accepted in 2022.
France has made a strong push on the international scene with basketball. Recent sports updates show the rest of the world has started to catch up to the United States. France beat the United States during the group stage at the Olympics but lost to the Americans in a rematch in the final.
When Embiid gained citizenship, France hoped to pair him with Rudy Gobert and youngster Victor Wembanyama. The French had given Embiid citizenship as an alien whose “naturalization is of exceptional interest.” While the French were disappointed Embiid went in a different direction, giving him citizenship was worth the risk. For all the latest MLB, NBA, NFL, and Soccer News, stay up to date on BlackSportsDigest.
