During the early Sengoku period they fought with the Imagawa in cooperation with Shiba Yoshisato but later became Imagawa vassals. After the Imagawa defeats by the Oda, however, they helped destroy the Imagawa and attempted to reclaim their prominence. The Ii became powerful under Tokugawa Ieyasu thanks to Ii Naomasa, one of the Ieyasu's four most famous generals.The Ii remained politically important throughout the Edo Period, being named lords of Hikone han in1601, and retaining control of that domain throughout the period. Members of the clan also held prominent positions in the shogunate government, culminating with Ii Naosuke and his Ansei Purge and assassination in 1860 in front of the Sakuradamon gate of Edo castle.

*Ii Naomori* (1506 –1560) He was a a retainer of the Japanese Imagawa clan During the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, Naomori was killed while trying to protect his lord, Imagawa Yoshimoto during the attack led by Oda Nobunaga, who surprised his enemy when he attacked in thick fog following a hard rain.Naomori was the father of Ii Naotora

*Ii Naotora* (????-1582) Ii Naotora was a female daimyo of the li clan and and only child of Ii Naomori after Naomori's death at Okehazama she changed her name to "Naotora" and because head of the clan( Her real name is unknown) her cousin Ii Naochika tried to marry her so that he could inherit the clan but Due to slander from Imagawa clan retainers, Naochika was ordered to commit seppuku, but he chose to flee to Shinano instead. Naotora became nominal head of the clan. Naochika's son, whom she adopted, the famed Ii Naomasa, succeeded her after her death in 1582.

*li Naochika*(1509- 1560) served the Imagawa clan. It was planned that he would marry Ii Naomori's daughter Naotora but then he fled to Shinano, to avoid committing suicide caused by a slender from an Imagawa retainer. Later he went back to Imagawa but he had already brought a new wife. Once again he got a nasty slander and then finally he was executed by Imagawa Ujizane.

*Ii Naomasa* ( 1561 - 1602) Naomasa's father, Naochika, was falsely convicted of treason by Yoshimoto's paranoid successor, Imagawa Ujizane, and was subsequently killed. Naomasa, then a very small child, was personally lucky to escape his father's fate and was later taken in by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who discovered Naomasa while hunting in Hamamatsu. Ii Naomasa joined the ranks of the Tokugawa clan in the mid-1570s, rising swiftly through the ranks to eventually become the master of a sizable holding in Ōmi Province, following the Battle of Sekigahara (1600).His court title was Hyōbu-dayū.

Naomasa initially garnered mass attention at the Battle of Nagakute (1584), commanding around three thousand musketeers with distinction and defeating the forces led by Ikeda Tsuneoki. In the battle, Naomasa fought so valiantly that it elicited praise fromToyotomi Hideyoshi, who was on the opposing side. Following the battle, Hideyoshi's mother was sent to stay with Naomasa in genteel captivity, cementing an alliance between the Tokugawa and the Toyotomi. After Naomasa helped insure victory during the siege of Odawara (1590) by breaching the castle walls and contributing to the Hōjō clan's surrender, he was given Minowa Castle in Kōzuke and 120,000 koku, the largest amount of land owned by any of the Tokugawa retainers.

Naomasa's finest hour was to come at the Battle of Sekigahara, where his unit outpaced those of other generals such as Fukushima Masanori, drawing the "first blood" of that battle. However, as the fighting was dying down, Naomasa was shot and wounded by a stray bullet during his attempt to prevent Shimazu Yoshihiro's getaway, a wound from which he would never fully recover. The wound also prevented his personal involvement in quelling the last vestiges of the anti-Tokugawa faction in the coming months.Naomasa was feared so much by his own men, that when he was critically wounded at Sekigahara, not a single one of them committed ritual seppuku, the act of honor killing to prevent a samurai from falling into enemy hands, out of fear of retaliation. As such, Naomasa was able to regain his composure and escape with his life.

The units Naomasa commanded on the battlefield were notable for being outfitted almost completely in blood-red armour for psychological impact, a tactic he adopted from Yamagata Masakage, one of Takeda Shingen's generals. As such, his unit became known as the "Red Devils", a nickname he shared. It has also been rumored, although never confirmed, that Naomasa would sometimes wear a monkey mask into battle, including at Sekigahara. Naomasa eventually died two years after Sekigahara most scholars say that he died dew to wound he received at Sekigahara.

*Ii Naokatsu* (1590 – 1662) the son of Naomasa he succeeded to family headship following his father's death in 1602. Under Tokugawa Ieyasu's orders, Naokatsu completed construction of Hikone Castle in 1606, and then moved there from Sawayama Castle when it was largely completed. In 1614, as Naokatsu was ill, he sent his brother Naotaka to fight in the Siege of Osaka; Naokatsu himself was assigned to Annaka, where he undertook security duty in the Kantō region. After the siege of Osaka, Tokugawa Ieyasu rewarded Naokatsu's younger brotherNaotaka with the Ii family headship, and allowed Naokatsu to form a branch family with holdings at the fief of Annaka in Kōzuke Province, worth some 30,000-koku. Naokatsu retired in 1632, yielding headship to his son Naoyoshi. He died in Ōmi Province in 1662.His descendants were moved around several times before having their holdings settle at Itoigawa, in Echigo Province.

*Ii Naotaka* ( 1590 –1659)son of Naomasa, Naotaka served in the Siege of Osaka in his brother Naokatsu's stead, where he would gain tremendous favor for his exploits at Tennoji. After the battle, he would be granted his brother's lands at Sawayama in Omi province. He would finish the construction of Hikone castle in 1622, a project which had been started by his brother in 1603.

*li Naosuke* (1815 – 1860) was daimyo of Hikone(1850–1860) and also Tairō of Tokugawa Shogunate, Japan, a position he held from April 23, 1858 until his death on March 24, 1860. He is most famous for signing theHarris Treaty with the United States, granting access to ports for trade to American merchants and seamen and extraterritoriality to American citizens. He was also an enthusiastic and accomplished practitioner of the Japanese tea ceremony, in the Sekishūryū style, and his writings include at least two works on the tea ceremony.

Under Ii Naosuke’s guidance, the Tokugawa shogunate navigated past a particularly difficult conflict over the succession to the ailing and childless Tokugawa Iesada. Ii Naosuke managed to coerce the Tokugawa Shogunate to its last brief resurgence of its power and position in Japanese society before the start of the Meiji period. Ii was assassinated in the Sakuradamon incident by a group of 17 Mito and 1 Satsuma samurai on March 24, 1860

*Ii Naonori*(1848 – 1904) was the last Japanese daimyo of the late Edo period, who ruled the Hikone Domain. He was the second son of Ii Naosuke. After he was relieved of office in 1871, he studied in the United States and England. He was created count in the Meiji period.

The line-up of cars that Gooding puts up for auction ranges from the ultra-rare vintage European coach built grand tourer to the modern hyper-car. 2007 Porsche RS Spyder

The RS Spyder was truly a machine purpose-built to win by Porsche Motorsport. The chassis, a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque, used the engine and transaxle as integral, stressed members. The car’s bodywork, composed of carbon fiber and Kevlar composites, was the result of extensive wind-tunnel testing. The engine was an all-new 3.4-liter four-cam V-8 that revved to 10,000 rpm and produced 478 hp. Power was delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed electropneumatic sequential gearbox that Porsche designed in-house. The advanced chassis featured fully independent pushrod-activated suspension and massive carbon ceramic disc brakes. The entire package weighed just 775 kg (approximately 1,650 pounds).

Following a precedent set during the Can-Am era, Porsche entrusted the Penske Motorsports team to race its RS Spyders in ALMS competition. The new Porsche made its competition debut at the 2005 season finale at Laguna Seca. Not only did it win the LMP2 class, it also set the third-fastest lap time and challenged the LMP1 leaders.

The 2006 ALMS season was a triumph for the RS Spyder. Penske’s two cars won seven class victories and captured a spectacular 1-2 finish at Mid-Ohio. These impressive results ensured that all four LMP2 titles (driver, chassis, engine, and team) went to Penske and Porsche. In 2007, with Penske Motorsports and Dyson Racing each campaigning two cars, RS Spyders scored eight successive overall victories (including a remarkable 1-2-3 finish at Long Beach) and 11 class wins in just 12 races. Once again, all four LMP2 titles went to the Weissach crew.

1935 Duesenberg SSJ Estimate: Over $10,000,000

In 1926, Errett Lobban Cord acquired the Duesenberg Motors Company, an Indianapolis firm specializing in finely engineered road cars. More than anything else, Cord bought Duesenberg for its reputable name, which carried with it an air of international prestige and a genuine motorsport pedigree. After all, cars built by Fred and Augie Duesenberg had won both the Indianapolis 500 and the French Grand Prix.

Having secured Duesenberg, Cord set out to build his pièce de résistance – the most powerful, expensive, and exclusive automobile the world had ever seen. In 1928, he unveiled the magnificent Duesenberg Model J, a 265 hp luxury car whose chassis alone cost $8,500. His timing could not have been worse. MORE

1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II Estimate: $5,500,000 - $7,500,000

The car presented here is arguably the finest surviving example of the extremely rare and greatly improved Series II Mondial. During its first five years, this Ferrari was driven in more than two dozen races, on three continents, on courses ranging from the most venerable European circuits to converted airport runways in the American Midwest. During its active racing career, this car generally placed well in the overall standings and captured significant class wins at the Grand Prix of Venezuela, Nassau, and Sebring. While other 500 Mondials may lay claim to an illustrious race record or rich provenance, none has had a more loyal and devoted caretaker than this beautiful French Racing Blue Scaglietti Spider. 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Estimate: $12,000,000 - $14,000,000

This fine example of the 275 GTB/C, chassis 09063 is among the most soughtafter Ferrari GT cars. These purpose-built 275s represent the ultimate evolution of Ferrari’s single-cam, 12-cylinder competition berlinetta – a line of thoroughbreds that dominated international GT racing for two decades. Without question, these 275s were the finest dual-purpose sports cars of their day – essentially GTOs for 1966.

Not only is 09063 a rare and significant competition Ferrari, it also possesses an impressive racing history and provenance. Originally sold to and driven by the legendary Pedro Rodríguez, this Ferrari was later campaigned by Chinetti’s famed North American Racing Team in the most important US endurance races: Daytona and Sebring. In the hands of subsequent owners, the GTB/C remained competitive well into the 1970s.

Unlike many special Ferraris, this car has not been publicly exhibited in over a decade, providing its new owner a rare opportunity to present an important, yet relatively unseen car at leading events. Above all, this GTB/C is a highly regarded example retaining its original chassis and engine (internal no. 1184/64). MORE

1955 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spider Estimate: $5,500,000 - $6,500,000

Since its impressive outing at Villa d’Este, 2110 has not been publicly displayed. Rather, it has been maintained in superb condition, carefully looked after by the consignor’s in-house mechanic. Not only does this Maserati appear to be a candidate for top honors at the best international concours (including Pebble Beach, where it was last shown in 1964), this rare coachbuilt A6GCS/53 would be a brilliant choice for rallies such as the Mille Miglia and the Colorado Grand.

While in the care of the current owner, 2110 has been meticulously researched by respected Maserati historian Adolfo Orsi Jr. Included in the car’s impressive file are copies of the Maserati build sheets, correspondence, period photographs, restoration photos, articles, and other important documents. Chassis 2110 is equipped with a high-performance twin-cam engine, numbered 2050, that features a dry sump lubrication system, gear-driven camshafts, and combination magneto/coil ignition system.

The offering of this Maserati represents a significant opportunity. Only three of these exquisite Frua Spiders were ever built and only 2109 and 2110 have survived with their original chassis and coachwork. Today, 2109 resides in a major private collection and is not expected to become available for the foreseeable future.

This exceptionally rare Maserati represents an ideal marriage of the thoroughbred A6GCS/53 chassis with Pietro Frua’s exquisite coachwork. The result is an undisputed masterpiece of Italian design and one of the most beautiful, desirable sports cars of the 1950s. 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder Estimate: $4,000,000 - $5,000,000

By 1953, Porsche had been successful racing its 356, but understood it would need a true purpose-built race car to compete at motorsport’s highest levels. The resulting designs, the 550 Spyder, and its successors the 550A and 718, became some of history’s most important race cars, scoring not only class victories but significant overall wins. At just over 1,200 pounds, the 550 Spyder was incredibly agile and its advanced four-cam engine meant it was quite powerful relative to its weight. The design’s brilliance was apparent from 550-001’s very first race, when Helmut Glöckler proved victorious after fighting unrelenting rain in his methanol-fueled Spyder at Nürburgring in 1953. That same year, 550-001 and 002 took significant class victories at Le Mans, the Carrera Panamericana, and the Buenos Aires 1000 Km. This 550 Spyder, chassis 550-0053, is a remarkable example with a fascinating and well-documented history. A 1955 letter to Eldon C. Beagle of Sacramento, California, from John von Neumann’s Competition Motors of Hollywood illuminates its original delivery details:

“Dear Mr. Beagle: Your Porsche Spyder is scheduled to dock this weekend in Los Angeles harbor. The serial number of your car is #550-0053, the engine number is #P90049, the color of the car is silver with red upholstery. The car is equipped with a full double windshield.”

Beagle grew up in Merced, California, the son of a miner-turned-car dealer. He studied engineering at Caltech and Stanford, but his college days were interrupted by WWII, and he served as an aircraft mechanic in Italy, where he relished organizing high-speed test flights. After the war, Beagle returned to California, starting a family as well as a successful agricultural supply business. He eventually acquired a spacious home in Sacramento and the 550 Spyder offered here. As documented by its accompanying 1955 Bill of Sale, Beagle paid $6,430 for the new Porsche, which was retailed to him through local dealership Oxford Motors. It was the first in a line of Porsche racing Spyders that Beagle owned and campaigned with great success on the West Coast and in the Bahamas.

According to his family’s archival book, The Car Years – The Racing Life of Eldon C. Beagle, Beagle drove 550-0053 in 14 races from 1955-1956. In his first race at Sacramento in 1955, he started on the front row next to von Neumann and finished 4th in Class. In 1956 races, his notable class results in 0053 included a 2nd Place at Stockton, California, 2nd and 3rd at Salt Lake City, a 3rd at Buchanan Field, 3rd at Santa Maria, and 2nd and 3rd at Arcata. According to the book, Beagle finished on the podium in 0053 in eight of the 14 races he entered. He retired only once, and the results demonstrate the car’s speed and reliability as well as Beagle’s driving prowess, which he honed in competition with such noted drivers as Lance Reventlow, Rod Carveth, and Pete Lovely. Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Euan Morton plays the role of Hedwig, and Hannah Corneau is making her Broadway National Tour debut as Yitzhak.

Euan Morton originated the role of Boy George in the musical Taboo in London and New York, garnering Tony and Olivier Award nominations and receiving the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Hedwig and the Angry Inch co-creator Stephen Trask gushes about why Euan is the perfect choice to fill Hedwig’s golden boots: “Euan’s Hedwig is going to be so exquisitely beautiful and archingly heartbreaking. What an emotional powerhouse. He is otherworldly.”

Morton is equally thrilled to play Hedwig: “I have been blessed in my career, but no blessing has been as exciting as the chance I’ve been given to take over the role of Hedwig. Joining the cast is the kind of challenge that an actor dreams of. I can’t wait to slip into her golden boots and begin the transformation to cultural icon! And I’m so much better looking with sparkling eyes and a caking of LaVern Baker! All the more thrilling is that I’ll have the honor of taking darling Hedwig all over the country. The members of Hedwig’s band “The Angry Inch” – aka “Tits of Clay” – will be music director Justin Craig (guitar and keyboards), Matt Duncan (bass), Tim Mislock (guitar), and Peter Yanowitz (drums), all of whom originated their roles on Broadway.

David Binder, who first produced Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 1997, produced the musical on Broadway with Jayne Baron Sherman, Barbara Whitman, Latitude Link, Patrick Catullo, Raise The Roof, Paula Marie Black, Colin Callender, Ruth Hendel, Sharon Karmazin, Martian Entertainment, Stacey Mindich, Eric Schnall, and The Shubert Organization. 101 Productions, Ltd were the executive producers. The record-breaking production ran for over 500 performances at the Belasco Theatre.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was originally produced Off-Off-Broadway at Westbeth and then, under the direction ofPeter Askin, ran over two years at the Jane Street Theatre beginning in February 1998. The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask won Obies in 2001. It won a 1998 New York Magazine Award and Entertainment Weekly’s “Soundtrack of the Year” Award. Time Magazine named Hedwig the Top Musical of 1998.

The film of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, directed by John Cameron Mitchell, won the Audience Award and Best Director Awards at Sundance. Mitchell won the Best New Director from the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, and the LA Critics Society. Stage productions have played for many years in Japan and in 2008, Korea hosted a popular televised reality show about the search for a new star to play Hedwig.

NAPABA Applauds the Nomination of James C. Ho to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit

WASHINGTON — Today, President Trump nominated James C. Ho to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. If confirmed, Ho would be the first Asian Pacific American to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and would be the sixth active Asian Pacific American federal appellate judge in the nation.

“Jim is one of the foremost appellate litigators in the nation and we strongly support and applaud his nomination to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit,” said Cyndie M. Chang, president of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). “Jim has been a leader in NAPABA for close to a decade. He is widely respected throughout the NAPABA membership and he is consulted by both sides of the aisle.”

NAPABA recommended Ho to Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit earlier this year.

He is co-chair of the Appellate and Constitutional Law practice group at the law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher. He has presented over 45 oral arguments in federal and state courts nationwide, including 16 arguments before the Fifth Circuit. He has argued and won cases before both the U.S. Supreme Court and the entire Fifth Circuit en banc.

Ho has extensive experience in all three branches of government: as former chief counsel for Senator Cornyn, as an appointee at the U.S. Department of Justice, and as a law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Most recently, he was the first Asian Pacific American ever appointed to serve as the solicitor general of Texas, the state’s chief appellate and Supreme Court litigator, responsible for defending the state’s most important programs and policies against legal attack.

Born in Taiwan, Ho arrived in the U.S. at the age of 1, and became a U.S. citizen at age 9. He is an active member of the Asian Pacific American community. He is co-chair of the NAPABA Judiciary & Executive Nominations & Appointments Committee, and he has written and spoken on a variety of occasions about the role of Asian Pacific Americans in the law. Ho has been recognized for his leadership and honored by organizations throughout the Asian Pacific American community, both nationally and in Texas, including the President’s Award from NAPABA, the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Asian Pacific American Leadership from the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, the Justice David Wellington Chew Award from the Asian Pacific Interest Section of the State Bar of Texas, the Community Leader Award from the Dallas Asian American Bar Association, the Award for Outstanding Contributions in Law from the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce, and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the SMU Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Ho has also received numerous other awards and recognitions, including the Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service from the Secretary of Defense. He is a three-time recipient of the Supreme Court Best Brief Award from the National Association of Attorneys General. He has also been named as a leading appellate lawyer by Chambers, Benchmark, Law360, The Best Lawyers in America®, The Legal 500, Texas Super Lawyers, and D Magazine.

NAPABA Honors the Legacy of Vincent Chin 35 Years after His Death

WASHINGTON — The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) commemorates the 35th anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin. On June 19, 1982, Vincent Chin was beaten in a xenophobic attack during a wave of anti-Japanese sentiment and died a few days later. Vincent Chin’s death and his killers’ lenient sentences marked a turning point in Asian Pacific American civil rights advocacy in the United States.

“Vincent Chin’s murder inspired a generation of Asian Pacific American community leaders and lawyers to join an inclusive movement for civil rights,” said NAPABA President Cyndie M. Chang. “His death and subsequent trial underscored the importance of the Asian Pacific American community standing together in the fight against racism and advocating in the courts. We must continue to build on this legacy by continuing to oppose hate and xenophobia in all forms.”

Chin’s murder and the sentences of his killers highlighted the lack of a strong national voice for Asian Pacific Americans in the legal sector. Recognizing the need to establish such representation, NAPABA was founded in 1988 to give voice to values of justice, equity, and opportunity for Asian Pacific Americans. Since that time, NAPABA has been strongly committed to civil rights advocacy. With the current rise in hate crimes targeting diverse communities, NAPABA hopes that the historic weight of Chin’s case serves as a persistent reminder of the importance of protecting and advocating for civil rights.

NAPABA honors Vincent Chin’s memory and the continued legacy of advocacy that emerged in the wake of his death.
