The reason that my Jane is different from canon is simply that I wanted to give her a chance. I wanted to make sure that I could justify some of the things that she did, some of the ways she acted and why. In this short- 1588- word essay I have detailed some of the problems that Jane faces mentally. Please understand that- under no certain terms- am I clinical psychiatrist and thus have no authority or knowledge of the actual mental health problems listed. This is combined from my pool of knowledge as well as a bit of research done haphazardly at 11 PM in a hot and sticky environment.

Jane suffers from a handful of different mental health problems and has for years, causing her to become very reclusive and anti-social. She prefers the company of books over humans and it took a great deal of effort on her part to willingly interact with anyone outside of her immediate friend group. She has since become a recluse again, staying at home whenever possible and disliking travel of any kind that isn't to the nearest grocery store to stock up on food. A routine has helped her break the cycle of being reclusive but only barely. Having Frigga got Jane into a routine of walking her and forcing herself to interact with society, even if she wishes she were anywhere else. Not many people actively approach Jane, seeing as she is often very closed off and unwilling to talk to people. She is greatly distressed by meeting new people and acts very cold and aggressive towards them, even if they don't deserve it.

She has been seeing a therapist and she was given a proper evaluation and assigned medication to help with a handful of her problems. The medications she takes sometimes cause more problems than they solve but she refuses to get them changed because she hasn't the time for doing that. Darcy Lewis has attempted to get her to change medications multiple times and it was only after her daughter was born that she began even considering taking her advice, though she was soon back in the US meaning that she'd have to pay frankly unreasonable prices to get them changed.

Jane suffers from anxiety and it negatively affects how she works. She prefers the company of only Darcy and Erik Selvig, as they are people she trusts to not hurt her, while she is working on important projects. Her stint at S.H.I.E.L.D was as short-lived as it was due to her rising anxiety about the place and the people in it. Often, she'll work herself to the bone in an attempt to stay awake longer. She hates sleeping and finds it to be borderline unbearable unless under the influence of her- incorrect- medication. Her friends have to force Jane into sleeping at an allotted time due to her aversion to sleep. It also contributes to her cold, harsh exterior when meeting new people. She dislikes it immensely and does everything she can to get out of that situation before it sends her into a panic attack. She also doesn't eat as much as she should, causing her to develop a mild eating disorder which has affected her life very little. She had around 14 panic attacks while working for S.H.I.E.L.D and has had a further 5 since she and Thor broke up.

Jane also bears the weight of severe depression and has for years, since she was around 10. Bullying combined with her parents- and grandparents- dying in quick succession caused her to fall into a downward spiral that was thankfully spotted by Erik and she got treatment before things got too bad. She has been on the same anti-depressants since she was 11, which has unfortunately developed into an addiction to them. They also no longer help her and she was forced to begin a new course of stronger anti-depressants to get the effect that she should have been getting. This became an issue during college and later university when she was at her worst mentally, her first romantic relationship failed and that sunk her even further down into the darkness. She began losing interest in her research, thus losing motivation to complete certain papers and other things that would have otherwise excited her. It became so serious that her teachers got involved and sent her to a counsellor to speak about her problems, though it ultimately proved to be a waste as the counsellor was rude to Jane and dismissed her problems as lies to get out of doing schoolwork.

Her next proper relationship- Thor- was a time where she was pretty happy. She felt like her life was back on track again after the years of pain and misery she'd been through. Sadly, this happiness didn't last and she was quickly put through the wringer again when she was infected with the Aether. The power was messing with her brain and causing her severe mental distress and since she was on Asgard, she couldn't take her medication to help it. She had to suffer through everything without any help. Then, when they lost Loki, she felt like it was her fault that he'd died as he'd died protecting her. When Thor refused to speak to her, her overactive mind was telling her that it was because he blamed her for what happened with Loki rather than the more logical explanation that he was mourning the loss of his brother instead.

2 years after that, when they broke up in 2015, Jane was put through the wringer again. Her stability in the form of Thor was gone and she blamed herself for it. She beat herself up over it for months, especially once she found out that she was pregnant. Once it sunk in- around 8 months through- she began cleaning her life up so her daughter could have a stable mother instead of a wreck. What didn't help was her workaholic tendencies, where she continued doing her schoolwork even while in agony in the hospital, literally hours from birthing her daughter. Having a daughter made Jane realise that she needed to sort herself out so she could be a better mother.

Thora and Frigga- her therapy dog- made sure she had a routine that was solid enough for her to ground herself with. Jane- using her own methods- was getting better and better as time went on. Everything seemed to be looking up for her and then Thanos happened and suddenly she was dead. Being resurrected by the Hulk 5 years later and learning her daughter was missing and her dog was as well caused Jane great mental distress. She hunted high and low for her baby girl for months, eventually forcing herself to travel to where Pepper and Tony lived to find her. Jane was apprehensive about trusting Pepper but soon became a close friend of the other woman. She realised that she missed 5 years of her beloved daughter's life and it was enough to once again send her into a deep depression.

This time, there was no amount of urging from friends or family nor medication that could help her. For her own safety, Jane was placed in a mental health facility to prevent her from attempting to take her own life. She was- for the first time in years- given the proper treatment and care that she needed, was allowed supervised visits with her daughter once she'd passed a few tests and was released after almost a year inside the facility. They moved back to San Fransico as the place relaxed Jane and helped ease her anxiety. Due to her knowing everyone who she interacted with on a day-to-day basis, she was able to recover pretty well at home. She only relapsed once and that was after she used her incorrect medication by accident. Darcy personally threw that medication out the following day. Jane has days- of course- where she just stays inside and doesn't go outside. This helps prevent her from having panic attacks induced by her mind telling her that danger was around every corner.

Jane has not yet gone back to work, having taken an extended break at Darcy's insistence. She has also expressed little interest in returning to a job that stresses her out, especially since the entire Thanos incident. She'd be forced to answer questions that she doesn't have answers to and reporters would push her even if she expressed her discomfort. It is mostly why she left the work, to begin with. The publicity of her and Thor's relationship, the people's judgement of her and the reporters insistent pushing was all too much for her. Combine that with being pregnant and the fact that she was under immense pressure by her higher-ups to produce consistently good quality work even though she had no motivation to do so. Jane left for her own mental health, one of the more selfish choices she'd made in her life.

Jane is often considered cold and callous by reporters and people who know her, like Thor. The reason they broke up was rather complex. Thor was understandably worried about her getting hurt or killed and he had a duty as the Prince of Asgard to fulfil. On top of that, he believed Jane to be callous and selfish. He didn't want to be with her due to her reminding him of how he used to be. She'd never expressed her problems to him, never explained the reason that she is the way she is and she never got the chance to. While Thor may claim it was a mutual breakup, it was really him breaking up with her. It broke her and it caused her to be very critical of people following him. He caused her downward spiral during her pregnancy but she never blamed him, always blaming herself for being weak. Jane was heartbroken but was never vengeful, she never dragged him down. When asked about Thor, she only spoke highly of him and his family- even Loki- never once dragging their names through the dirt, even though she definitely could have if she wanted to.

Do parents really expect their teens in highschool to pay for their own cars?

Its enraging when I hear my parents/parents in general tell their kids, who have their licenses to pay for a car yourself . Not even a split? A loan? These kids are still in highschool! Even after highschool in college, I just don't see how one can pay for even a cheap used car themselves unless they dedicate their life and save every penny for the damn car. People that age usually earn close to minimum wage, and if they spend all their time working instead of studying, that's all their ever going to make. Ex) my friend earns 9.25 hourly at a grocery store (he's worked there for a while so its not exact minimum wage), and works 40 hours a week. He is ALWAYS at work. At the end of the week, his checks are worth about 338 after taxes. A crappy used car is probably about 5000? I'm not fully sure. Someone that age would have to work 40 hours a week for quite a long time. Since they're teenagers, that would pretty much leave them no time for studying/doing homework and a social life in general. Don't parents want their children to perform well academically as well? Aside from financial issues of their own, why wouldn't a parent with a decent amount of money atleast agree to help their responsible teenager pay for a used or inexpensive car? I was hit by a woman in a parking lot. In Texas where I live, certain parking lots are no fault zones if they are private property. I was in one of these no fault zones. I was uninsured at the time. I was not cited on the ticket I received for any accident, only for no insurance. The officer informed me verbally that the accident was my fault only because she had the right of way but that there was nothing they could do about it because of the no fault zone policy. Anyway, now her insurance company is coming after me to collect payment of the $1500 they paid for her damages. I have not agreed to pay this amount because it was a no fault zone and I don't feel I should pay for it. She should not have been going that fast in a busy parking lot with a car full of kids. Although the unofficial technicality states that I was at fault, legally no one was at fault. Her insurance company is also threatening to have my license suspended if I do not pay the amount specified. I did not think that they, as a private company, had the power to have that happen. Another disgusting, obscene tale of lewd behavior, power, tears and woe?...another reason to boycott the annual Oscar Awards telecast? No. Quite the opposite. In fact, though such stories still abound (and always will) in Hollywood, its the opposite. Its a tale of incredible imagination. Its a story of people of faith, as well and it’s time that #wetoo “come out.” And about the Oscars: 99% of viewers might not understand why Oscar winners accept their award with weeping, joy and occasional bizarre behavior. As you read this story about the trials and travails of getting a movie made, you’ll get it. Granted, getting an independent film produced might not be as difficult as finding a cure for cancer...but close. This story records the unbelievable struggle of a married, then divorced couple to get a movie made. It’s dedicated to all people everywhere who have struggled or are struggling, to make a feature film. In fact, developing their project is one reason the couple is still close after divorce, sometimes even living together at times if it seemed good for the project. Regarding that... -a divorced couple living together was seen in 2012, as so unusual and even unhealthy, that a major cable news network actually cast the couple in what they pitched as a “News Doc” focusing on the phenomenon. After reading this, anyone should be able to understand why finally getting their movie made will be a cause for these two, to laugh, weep and dance with unbridled joy. An Oscar? Well that would be the possibly cause of a complete and total joy meltdown! And YES #WeToo can bring answers to the #MeToo problem but more about that later. Yes, Damon impregnated the beautiful young Ex-Texan not with human seed but with words, with the idea of a movie project. Damon had just finished a script inspired by his life called Good Will Hunting, a tale of breaking out of one’s own personal limitations, of the confines of “home” and going west to chase a girl and/or a dream. That tale went on to receive numerous nominations and awards. Here are just a few: Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Robin Williams. Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Matt Damon & Ben Affleck. Best Picture Lawrence Bender. Best Actor in a Leading Role, Matt Damon. Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Minnie Driver. Best Director, Gus Van Sant. Best Film Editing, Pietro Scalia. Best Music, Original Song Elliott Smith For the song "Miss Misery,” Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, Danny Elfman. Back at our Melrose dinner party, hearing young Carole’s struggle to move to L.A. no less than seven times, Damon half jokingly (but really meaning it), says “write a movie about it” and “call it 7 Attempts to L.A.” Carole went home that night and within days, began writing on 4” x 5” Index cards. Without sufficient knowledge of how to write a script, though, or having script writing software or even a typewriter, her movie-pregnancy eventually dies. Yet that baby will be resurrected; not just once but over and over, during the course of the next twenty three+ years. Damon & Affleck will collect numerous awards, star in and produce numerous films and rise to Superstar status. Bardwell will marry, (this writer) change her name a few times, divorce (this writer) move about twelve times, to various suburbs around Hollywood (finally settling there.) She’ll survive twenty three years in an oft-times cruel industry, working as a professional hand model while dreaming of being a working actress and making her movie. 1999-2002 The first script-resurrection began with meeting this writer at a Hollywood Bible Study. Evangelist/Motivational speaker Tim Storey packed out the Bel Age Hotel Banquet room, just off the Sunset strip, with the best and brightest of gorgeous, hip, stylish Hollywood. Charlie Sheen, Christian Slater, Gary Busey and Dyan Cannon were regular or frequent attendees as was nightclub owner Brent Bolthouse. It was there that this writer met then-Carole Bardwell and began a life-long friendship that would center on at last birthing the script-baby. (or “the script, baby!) A few short years after meeting, Carole, then Carolyn, took this writers surname, Christian and became Carolyn Christian. In the very first year or two of marriage, the two got busy writing the first draft of the script 7 Attempts to L.A. But it wasn’t until they had been forced to move from their dream Brentwood apartment, due to insufficient income and ultra high rents, that more serious drafts were written. 2 0 0 5 In San Fernando, CA., taking up extra work and sharing the two bedroom condo of an Avid Video Editor friend, “JAKE” they moved into high gear and first began to look at the 3 act structural challenge that Carolyn’s biography posed. Christian had been taught three act structure basics by a student of a famous film writer and director. Act one is where obstacles are introduced and situations are “set up.” Act two is where they reach crisis mode and Act three is where everything is resolved, “payoffs” happen and the dragon is finally slain. The challenge was that the couple was living in Act two, with no Act three in sight. How does one write a true story that remains unfinished? How does a true story of two people doing extra work, struggling to keep a roof over their heads, end up with one, or both, winning an Oscar? At the advice of a then-talent manager, Carolyn enrolled in the prestigious Baron/Brown acting school in Santa Monica. One of her acting partners in class, a young man with a bright future, took his own life. Carolyn was moved to take up the cause again. The script would be about suicide prevention. Her story was one of persisting through terrible hardship, loss, depression and pain and yet winning victory in the end. Her faith taught her that if she would just persist, trusting God, breakthrough would eventually happen. She and her co- writer, then-husband, dreamed of audiences that would include depressed or suicidal movie- goers finding themselves immersed in the shared mass experience of a movie that changes their mental state. Is is possible that today, people dying from suicide are also victims of something unseen to the naked eye; something that promotes suicide, something that a story or an immersive experience might cure? Wild ideas indeed but no wilder than the world we live in and what wilder place is there than Hollywood, California? The decision was made to “write their own future” according to popular teachers of the time, Christian and otherwise. They wrote a third act using a rumored long lost relative “Belizaire the Cajun” who had left a fortune in a Swiss bank account, landing the couple finally, in a Limo, on the way to the Oscar’s. Incredibly, a Limo-driver friend was introduced to their lives and they became house mates with him in...

2 0 0 7 TARZANA Maybe showing signs of ADD, they veered wildly off-course when they found and adopted a street Tabby, inspired to pursue another script that another actor-Gary Busey had inspired, a modern-day Breakfast At Tiffany’s project, instead. -Or maybe they knew that a long lost rich Uncle story was way too predictable, not the way to end their story and it would take a few more years of hardship, to craft the perfect “happy ending.” THE MIRACLE HAND MODEL Amazingly, CeCe’s hands were discovered...in Church. CeCe had been raised in “hand raising” church traditions but at conservative Bel Air Presbyterian, her hands-in-the-air worship style stuck out like a...sore thumb. In February of 2007, a 30-something black friend, “Picasso,” who resembled Barack Obama, was sitting a few pews behind CeCe. He noticed her hands during worship because they were raised in the air among a congregation of hundreds of non hand raisers, who’s hands were kept at their sides or in their pockets. CeCe’s hands were flawlessly shaped, thin and graceful. Picasso, it turned out, often worked with Linda Teglovic, owner of the top hand modeling agency in the world, BodyPartsModels, in Beverly Hills. After church, Picasso gave CeCe a referral. Linda was blown away by CeCe’s hands, saying they “looked just like her top model, Adelle.” But alas the miracle was “not yet”- the fee for joining the agency was steep; around $1500 for photos and other signing fees. Some even said that fee’s for joining modeling agencies were “red flags” and to beware. Regardless, the couple was struggling financially yet again and certainly did not have $1500 for something that seemed at the time, like risky business. Both had made good money working for Barry Young, a commercial director friend but that job ended when Christian’s Mom needed in-home hospice care for the Leukemia which was soon to take her life. So, hand modeling, like the movie project, was shelved. 2 0 0 8 JUNE 26- CeCe’s Birthday! a year and a half later, CeCe’s bestie, a pixie wearing female Norwegian entrepreneur named Lena, handed CeCe a birthday card as they left an Encino, CA Starbucks. Stopped at the light, in the dark, with Christian driving, CeCe opened the card to find...a check for $1300! Inside, a note read “for your hand modeling!” CeCe’s Dad sent $300 to cover the extra fees, enabling CeCe to finally sign with BodyParts Models. Soon, her gorgeous fingers were seen tapping a Hewlett Packard Tablet in a commercial, shown during the annual Grammy Awards show! She was even booked on a Cici’s Pizza commercial where she made $3500 (before taxes and fees) in one day just to hold a slice of Pizza! But the REAL miracle happened back in the 1970’s, to four year old Carol. Her older half sister, Angie, arguing over their dog, slammed the front door of the house. Carol’s right pinky was caught between the door and the door frame. The bloody tip hung by a slender piece of flesh as Carol’s Mom held it together in the car, on the way to a local ER. The doc said that “it would most likely not function” if they sewed it back on and that discarding the tip might be the best course of action. Carol’s parents were both faith-filled Christians who trusted that God would be able to not just heal but glorify little Carol’s hands. It took thirty years but God did just that, using BodyPartsModels Agency. Unfortunately, although the hand modeling paid very well, the jobs were inconsistent. Forced to move again and again, the couple shelved the film project yet again, for a few more years, to focus on keeping a roof over their heads and on keeping the marriage together. 2 0 1 0 AUGUST An awesome DTLA PR job earned the couple $300 per day and got them into a beautiful Sherman Oaks apartment with Lena co- signing. But that job was lost after a year and a half, when the owner of the company decided to fire everyone instead of engaging in a labor relations dispute. Losing the job forced them to scramble to find $300 a day to keep them in their expensive apartment. Some months they succeeded and some months they did not. SAG Actors Fund, Bel Air Presbyterian Deacons Fund, unemployment, friends and family all helped but eventually the bitter struggle overwhelmed them. 2 0 1 1 September Ten years after marrying, the already strained relationship finally broke down completely. A triumphant, redemptive script based on Carolyn’s “real life” seemed like a joke when her life and her marriage, were ruined. Even Ben Affleck personally hiring Christian as a sketch artist at $200/day with his own trailer, for Oscar winning ARGO, couldn’t put things back on track. It was “too little, too late” for CeCe, who spent many a night just weeping in her bed, pondering the incredible devastation that divorce was about to bring. Christian too, suffered a deep depression when forced to embark on a months long couch surfing tour of several friends from Church homes. Married couple Pastors counseled Christian to accommodate CeCe’s request for “space.” Sleeping on the couch in an L.A. County therapist friends Los Feliz apt, he joked “most people only need your couch for an hour a week but apparently I need eight hours a day!” 2012 JANUARY Christian finds a job listing on CraigsList for CeCe who has experience cold calling investors from similar projects in the past. She gets the job and later that year, it will pay for her new Hollywood apartment. JULY Divorce final, a major “News” network casts them in a “documentary” about how the crash of ‘08 was causing divorced couples to live together. Bringing cameras into their Sherman Oaks apartment to film what they said was a “news doc” the show turned out to be a reality show where Christians buttons were intentionally pushed, to destroy his “zen” calm and foster ratings. OCTOBER Carolyn began to use the name “CeCe” from her hubby’s nick-naming her initials. The divorce final, CeCe moved out of their Sherman Oaks apartment and took a small, rent-controlled one bedroom in Hollywood, with a view of the HOLLYWOOD sign and the Observatory at Griffith Park. DECEMBER When the show aired a few days before Christmas later that year, Christian suffered from one of the worst shame based depressions he’d ever experienced but instinctively knew that there had to be a reason for it: -that making a movie that would save people from depression, it might be necessary to experience that same depression. 2 0 1 3 JANUARY Christian takes a job as “Chef” at ROAST a deli-market in Brentwood where he works 7am - 9:30 pm, 5-6 days a week, standing on his feet without a break, to keep the apartment. AUGUST- MORE UNEMPLOYMENT Tired of being on his feet for 14 1/2 hr days, standing next to a 600 degree oven while being yelled at by a hard drinking wanna-be Anthony Bourdain, Christian gives his two week notice in August, having found a job as a home PA for a questionable film project in Playa Del Rey. The welcome break of sitting down all day with a view of sailboats just outside the Marina is rudely interrupted after only a few weeks when Christian and his beautiful young Brit blonde co-worker are asked not to cash their checks. He and his co-worker friend quit. The restaurant wont take him back. His co-workers hubby, living nearby, banged daily on their employers door and eventually got his wife paid. Christian forgave his employers debt of $700 from that job. At the same time, CeCe and her co-worker friends, across town at the Raleigh Studio offices of “There Goes the Neighborhood” LLC, are shocked and dismayed to learn that their Film Producer boss is using money from investors retirement funds, to do coke, hire hookers and watch porn. CeCe, as Christian had done, quits after not getting several paychecks. She takes five pages of leads of investors and the Private Placement Memorandum (PPM) legal doc and quits the job without getting paid almost $9,000 in commissions owed. THANKSGIVING? Christian kept trying valiantly, to keep the expensive Sherman Oaks apartment but after just a year, he failed to find the income or a good room mate and was given a deal to move out without harm to his credit. A friend who was also being divorced by his wife (Lena, the Norwegian entrepreneur,) for the exact same reasons, offered the empty garage in the couples four-bedroom Panorama City house, a few miles up the road, for $400/month. Moving into an un- insulated, garage in a low income neighborhood, living amongst spider webs, during one of the coldest Thanksgivings in L.A., was a low point in Christians life -but things were still to get worse. CHRISTMAS? Just when he had found a temporary part time job in a friends restaurant in Winnetka, a 20 minute bus ride away, he was given the news that the house was going on the market. After finally settling in, he’d again have to move, without a job and with only a few hundred dollars in his bank account. Meanwhile in Hollywood, CeCe meets a British rising star who encouraged her to pick up the project again, that he’d like to read it. 2 0 1 4 “It can only get better...” MARCH The house sells, Christian has nowhere to go. CeCe reluctantly but kindly offers her couch and is rewarded almost instantly with a miracle job. Christian, tired of crappy jobs, bounced checks and couch surfing became pro-active and agrees to co- found an event company. ”CHRYSALIS HOLLYWOOD” planned as a 2-day Seminar/Bootcamp for newcomers who want to increase their savvy in Hollywood. Christian begins to receive a small monthly stipend from his Seattle area Christian woman business partner, whom he’d met on Facebook. Looking back, it might seem so incredibly sketchy. But at the time, the money-small as it was, convinced him that his partner “meant business. CAKE & EAT IT, TOO Even though she didn’t submit for it, even though thousands did, the director of CAKE picture-picked CeCe to be stand-in and photo double for the biggest female star on the planet-Jennifer Aniston, a six week job that paid around $8000. Both CeCe and Christian agreed that God had smiled upon her kindness in taking in her ex temporarily. MAY 7LA RESURRECTION CeCe meets an “English director woman” who wants to read the shelved script. The woman is impressed and says that with a re-write, she can possibly help get the script to “people.” Once again, the project is resurrected and now that Christian is crashed at CeCe’s, co- writing with her seems to justify the couple living together yet again.

JULY Christian now couch surfing in yet another friends apt, had finished planning CHRYSALIS HOLLYWOOD-a venue (L.A. Center Studios), a panel of guest speakers (including CeCe and her MTV VJ woman friend) photographers, promo postcards and a gorgeous web site he had designed and built-all for a few hundred dollars a month. Christian and his partner planned to split the profits 50/50 with Christian paying back the monthly stipend he was using to live on. Ahead of his time, Christian even accepted Bitcoin on the website. AUGUST 1 Dark Knight of the Soul. Chrysalis Hollywood partnership tanks when a new partner, a christian Hollywood producer suggests that Christian ought to be paid a living wage, for managing the project. At a Malibu meeting, Christians woman business partner agrees but a few days later, changed her mind, deciding that Christian ought to work at Starbucks, instead as he continues to manage the event. At the worst time of his life, CeCe insists that he move to what looks like a sketchy living arrangement in Pasadena at a friend of the producers home. Out of money, Chrysalis crashed, self esteem totally shot, he prays to God “take me out of this world.” An epiphany at the “Al Pastor” Taco Stand on the corner, where he is tongue-lashed by an enraged, 6’ 5” black man, upset at the recent Donald Sterling NBA revelations, changes Christians mind, renewing his will to live and restoring his joy. He has experienced, at a Taco Stand, what he has dreamed of accomplishing, in a movie. He now knows it can be done. SEPTEMBER CeCe is given a plane ticket back home to Houston, to visit her Dad and half sister. Christian, instead of moving, has the place all to himself for two weeks, promises to finally finish the re-write, this time adding a 3rd act inspired by the premise of a huge female star being abducted and CeCe, as her photo double, being asked to finish the film which leads to an astonishing rise to the Oscar’s. OCTOBER Deciding to do a “raise” like the ones she has experience doing in past jobs, CeCe asks Christian to create a 50 page “PPM” for 7 L.A., copied from the Private Placement Memorandum CeCe still had from her last boss. CeCe uses lead lists, Christian asks a few friends to cold call as “Fronters” and another to be a closer. Several attempts are made to raise funds by calling investors from the Dunn & Bradstreet lead lists but all the investors were burned and not about to get burned again. Zero dollars were raised; maybe a good thing at the time. Another lesson learned. THANKSGIVING The director of an A-list film starring Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper is actually impressed with the writing but passes. The creator of a wildly popular TV series was interested. CeCe and Christian are encouraged that the project is gaining traction. Someone from a Craiglist ad asks if CeCe and Christian would consider doing the film as a musical and is never heard from again. Years later, LaLa Land is released- a musical about an actress trying to make it in Hollywood. LAST HOURS OF 2014 Christian has an incredibly vivid dream where he meets Lindsay Lohan at a tiny Church worship service at an unknown SoCal location. 2015 January 7 A friend of CeCe’s from the Raleigh Studios job, calls out of the blue and phone-introduces CeCe to Michael Lohan- Lindsay’s Dad, who says he might be able to help connect the team to some major players. CeCe meets with a old friend from acting school who refers him to a young black guy, “Mr. RED Camera,” who offers to shoot the pitch trailer “for free,” which turns into a “$600 rental fee” because “the original camera is broken and in the shop.” At the same time, Christian is told of an older white gentleman, Dan, who might invest in the project. He meets CeCe and agrees to fund the pitch trailer, investing as a producer, $2000 towards that effort. FEBRUARY Deciding to try crowd funding, 60-something Berkley hippy director Barry Young,(Bedford Falls)-the guy who had fired the couple when Christians Mom was dying, in a kind gesture, shoots and edits a video for their Indie GoGo campaign. The 60-day effort fails to raise any money- but the ultra hip Miles Davis soundtracked video is universally praised as awesome! MARCH Mr. RED camera totally blows it, forgetting to turn on the proper camera setting after a miracle opens the door for cast and crew to shoot on location at the Dolby theater. Not knowing that the gaff can be fixed in post, the guy keeps making excuses, delaying and deleting footage when asked to produce footage or a rough copy of the trailer. JUNE Finally complete, the pitch trailer with RED footage looks impressive however the random clips are confusing because Mr. RED camera refused to include stock shots needed to fill out the story. The success of JOY and other similar films inspires CeCe and Christian to re-brand the script as a “female empowerment story” then again, as a “Cinderella story.” 2016 MARCH Finally, Some breaks! Christian is paid $5000 to write a Greek Film Comedy and moves to the West Side. SUMMER SETBACK “EJ” a middle aged black man, says “God told me that I was supposed to help” -create a shooting schedule and a production board, that would help get an insurance bond that would guarantee $300,000 to start pre-production. His connection- TOM, had worked with Spielberg on JAWS. After a month of EJ hanging out in CeCe’s apt all day, every day, doing alot of good work but arguing over details...it turned out that EJ was living out of his Mercedes. Eventually, his wild claims of being God became intolerable and CeCe kicked him off the project. With a web site, a pitch trailer, Barry’s awesome video and a script getting positive coverage, CeCe goes out to schmooze on a regular basis, garnering many pitch meetings with film professionals but none have yet to buy. CeCe meets AMIRA a gorgeous 30- something brunette actress who she sees playing the young version of herself in the film. With Middle eastern ancestry and exotic seductive eyes, Amira and CeCe are quite the team in schmoozing. Amira introduces CeCe to a woman who suggests the need for a PITCH DECK. Christian, now living in a Santa Monica Bungalow, takes a month or two to create a PITCH DECK and adds it to website. Its a huge job which usually pays around $3000 but he does it on spec, as usual, sowing more hours of blood, sweat and tears into the dream. More meetings, more parties. An Asian man has connections to WANDA, the massive Chinese entertainment conglomerate. The pitch deck is adjusted to include Chinese talent Bing Bing Lee. The Asian man emails the pitch deck to WANDA, who apparently passes without word.

Fall 2016 - LaLa Land is released while CeCe attends AFM. CeCe Meets Indie Film Producer “Paul.” Paul likes the script and promises a “50/50 chance it will go into production” if they hire another writer for yet another re-write. 2017. Spring CeCe and Christian are crushed to see so many of their elements in LaLa Land: Griffith Park Observatory, which can be seen out CeCe’s living room window, plays a key role as well. CeCe and Christian have been hiking in Griffith for years, dreaming of the day they “make it to the top of Mt. Hollywood.” Their script opens with a spoken word poem which references the “agony and the ecstasy, side by side, on the 405 (freeway)”; LaLa Land opens with a SoCal freeway dance number. CeCe and Christians relationship had a poignant ending over career and money; so did the lead characters in LaLa Land (rare and unusual choices for Hollywood movies) CeCe and Christian wrote about and had a fascination for, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Audrey Hepburn and classic Hollywood. LLL had a fascination for Ingrid Bergman and included a play written about her by the female lead. In another bizarre synchronicity, LaLa Land won, then lost, the Best Picture Oscar, which seemed ironic and possibly even karmic-there is no way they knew for sure. CeCe and Christians script climaxed in a bizarre Oscar moment. Was life imitating art or art imitating life? Christian posts on a facebook Hollywood writers group, looking for a 3rd writer. Around 5-7 are called in, for an interview at Christians place in Santa Monica. Randy, who was mentored by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, is picked. JUNE Randy is hired to re-write, does a bang up job in a month but his version is not yet quite Cinderell-esque enough. JULY Christian offers a plot outline for a present-day Cinderella story. Randy kindly agrees to start yet another re-write, framing it more closely in a modern day Cinderella plot outline. DECEMBER CeCe’s Dad, who had supported the project with regular financial provision for a year and a half, suddenly disappears. CeCe goes to the Hollywood station to file a Police report. A few hours later, her Dad calls- he’s driven all night to Houston and will no longer support her because his sister in Louisiana and an elder woman friend in Houston have poisoned his mind against her, Christian and the project, saying “the two are winos and the movie is a pipe dream.” 2018 June Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain become the latest celebrity suicide victims, harsh and sad reminders for CeCe and Christian, that the work remains unfinished. Randy, with a full time job on a movie, has still not yet finished a re-write. CeCe is interviewed by another beautiful young Texan coming to Hollywood-Holly, for her YouTube show “Higher Living.” Christian is present at the interview at CeCe’s apt, with Griffith Park out the dark window. He’s inspired by the question “have you written a book?” -and realizes that’s the ONE THING he and CeCe have yet to do. THIS IS THAT BOOK. Now back to the opening scene where one of Hollywood’s biggest stars stands “accused” -two decades later! -of impregnating a vulnerable, innocent young actress...with an idea. Why cant more sexually charged meet-cutes end up triumphant like this and not tragic, like Harvey Weinstein? Shifting topical mode here, from straight biography and story telling, to a little preachin’- after all, the entire project comes from a desire to share love and faith, with a oft cold, hard Hollywood that eats people alive... -sexual mores and attitudes tend to veer towards one extreme or the other: extreme legalism or extreme licentiousness. Both extremes are extremely...toxic, to human sexuality. The hijab and burkha is toxic legalism. In a good faith attempt to “protect” women, women are subjugated. The other extreme, the Hollywood extreme, veers too often into porn and nudity. In a good faith effort to “liberate” women, women are instead deified and objectified. Ironically, both cultures start out trying to help women but end up hurting them. (extremely) Lets face it, women have always been abused by Alpha males, since the dawn of time. But the “sexual liberation” movements of the 60’s, whole heartedly adopted and promoted by HOLLYWOOD, PLAYBOY, COSMOPOLITAN, ROCK & ROLL and other culture-makers, threw gasoline on the fire of male lust and sexual abuse. We sent abusers like Weinstein mixed signals and he merely conformed to them. He adopted a “pro-women” stance while abusing and terrorizing women. His idea of “pro-woman” was to fund abortion rights groups, clinics and politics. But is it possible that such a stance was merely an attempt to create a “free pass” -to abuse women? So it seems. So what’s the answer? How can we slow or stop powerful men from abusing vulnerable women? We can’t. It will never 100% stop on this earth. But we can slow it down and here’s how: Lets give a second look to perhaps the most iconic IKON in all of history. It’s the single most popular piece of Jewelry, the ultimate fashion statement and also the symbol of the most popular spiritual movement of all time: THE CROSS. Lets open our eyes and heart to a new way of understanding its mystery, it’s secrets. I would like to humbly suggest looking at the CROSS as “center” “cross hairs”, “target,” as “bull's-eye.” We like to say that we need to get “centered.” We talk about “heart” which is another way of saying “center.” We use word phrases like sweet spot- yet another way of saying “heart” or “center.” The fact is, Jesus being nailed to a cross was an invitation to all people of all times, to the perfection that exists only in the center, the heart, the sweet spot. Outside of that spot misses the mark, is out of balance and unhealthy. And we can see that with #MeToo. We as Americans and Westerners “missed the mark” by a mile. “Sexual freedom” has legitimized licentiousness and thrown gasoline on the fires of lust. At the same time, the other half of the world, seeing the rapes, the excess and the harm “the great satan” has done to women, missed the mark by a mile in the opposite direction, with clothing, rules and laws that attempt to control women. You may have your own personal opinion about which is worse and that’s probably based only on how you were raised. But its easy to see, if you open your mind, that neither culture is really helpful to women and that no sane, thinking woman would choose either, given the chance to actually think about it. There is yet another way of understanding the cross. Its the idea that few of us hit the mark. Its the idea that hitting the mark is not easy, it takes ALOT of practice. Its the idea that we actually have a FOCUS in a culture where “anything goes” or “all roads lead to God.” We have ONE SINGULAR TARGET/FOCUS but better than that, we have the understanding that most of the time, most people MISS that target, yet that’s no cause for condemnation, judgment or penalty. When an archer misses the target, they are not penalized for “bad behavior.” Instead, it’s “OK, grab another arrow and try again.” In philosophical terms, we call this “forgiveness” “mercy” and “grace.” Sexual liberation, like Archery, cant work unless practiced in a setting of mercy, forgiveness and grace. Powerful men, when they fall, deserve forgiveness if they are willing to apologize and make restitution for missing the mark. Women who are victimized, need to forgive themselves, because, its not their fault. Now, about “redemptive stories.”: Why are Church folk so insistent on “redemptive” stories and why is this author proposing them as another way of addressing the #MeToo problem? I realized that writing our story will help people understand CeCe and myself. I realized that part of what made our struggle so hard for the last two decades --the prime of our lives-- was that many around us- even well meaning people, didn’t “get us” and many even judged us. The two most common assumption/judgments people around us made, were: 1. We or I were somehow “lazy” or unwilling to work or unwilling to take “whatever jobs we could get.” And... 2. “They must have some secret sin that they are hiding that is causing all this trouble.” People entertained these thoughts, judgments and ideas because it made the world a safer place for them. No one wants to live in a place where “bad things happen to good people.” In our case, bad things seemed to happen over and over for a very long time. An “explanation” had to be found. Few are prepared to think that the world is really that harsh or that God doesn’t help good people-so these “explanations” were devised, to explain our woes. After all, we seemed like hard workers, like such sweet, kind caring people. We seemed like good tax-paying citizens. So how could we be going through such difficulties? While there may have been a grain of truth in these explanations, one can see from reading our story that one thing is for sure: we tried. We hustled. We did just about everything we were told to do, everything the professionals suggested and yet, during those years, we STILL managed to evade success at every turn. And I do think that being surrounded by well meaning people and not so well meaning people who are confused by you, who don’t get you or who judge you certainly can hinder or even block success. Don’t believe me? Look at Jesus: most people, not even his closest friends, his disciples, “got him” during his lifetime. They judged him, they thought he was crazy and ultimately, their judgment on him was a brutal death. But what happened after that? What transformed Jesus from a judged, crucified, mis- understood Rabbi into the most popular spiritual leader of all time? Of course, the bible says that the spirit of God accomplished that and that’s a great spiritual answer but in the natural world, it was a BOOK. “THE GOSPEL OF MARK” explained and transformed Jesus, the man and the reason for his life. Reading the book, people finally “got it.” Great books bring order out of a chaotic world. They comfort and explain. THIS BOOK is an attempt to explain this writer and his writing partner. And in the same way, MOVIES have that same narrative power, a power which too often goes un- used in Hollywood. Movies can help explain a world that seems to be spinning out of control, into chaos. In “real life” we witness horrible tragedy and cant make sense of it. Then we enter into a dark movie theater. Then light shines out of the darkness. The light brings ANSWERS and the answers comfort us. We leave, having been refreshed with new answers, having processed and understood why “bad things happen to good people.” (Three act structure, remember?) There is no better feeling than the “OK, now I get it” feeling. There is nothing greater (other than love) for a human, than to UNDERSTAND and to have WISDOM from repeated understanding. The more we understand, the wiser we become. Great movies can do all of this. We can “escape” a world of chaos and confusion and enter into a world of order and understanding. But it helps when the film makers are intentional about these goals and this is where the front lines of the Battle for the soul of Hollywood is being fought. It was in this culture war where Harvey Weinstein’s crimes were allowed and accepted “just because” “you know, that’s how he is.” If we don’t begin to re-center our culture and our movies, aiming for a sweet spot between legalism and licentiousness, nothing will change. We can no longer send men mixed messages that women’s liberation means women are “up for anything.” They are not. There is in fact, a very narrow target of what helps women and its called the “heart” or the “center.” In fact, we say that such a desire even comes from “the heart.” So, redemptive movies are “heart movies” that aim for a sweet spot between the excess of extreme licentiousness and legalism. Yes, they can be sexy. There can be hot babes in bikinis. Sex can be playful and alluded to. But there needs to boundaries. There needs to be an agreed upon, established “target,” a moral code of right and wrong. Damon’s encounter with CeCe, twenty-three years ago at this writing, was just such an encounter. Of course, sex played a part, a girl met a boy and they were attracted to each other; yet that didn’t need to end in abuse or licentiousness. Instead, it became a seed that has majestically grown into this book and hopefully, a movie. CeCe & Christian’s hope and prayer is that this story can serve as a witness that there is still hope: hope for a society where every sexual encounter does not have to end in a one night stand but maybe in something so much greater. In the words of John Lennon and Paul Mcartney ”let it be!” “When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, There will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see. There will be an answer, let it be. Let it be, let it be. There will be an answer, let it be. And when the night is cloudy, There is still a light that shines on me, Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.”

Under the big tent of depression there are many shades of gray. Depression can be mild or severe. It can be short-lived or chronic. Special circumstances, like the birth of a baby or the changing of the seasons, can trigger depressive symptoms.

Understanding the type of depression a person is experiencing helps doctors determine treatment. And for people who are diagnosed with depression, having information about their specific disorder can be helpful. “Folks seem comforted in knowing what’s going on for them,” says Sarah Noble, DO, a psychiatrist with the Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia. “At least they have an answer for why they’re experiencing what they’re experiencing.”

Here’s what you should know about the different types of depression. If you suspect you or a loved one has one of these, get evaluated by a mental health professional. They can help you figure out a diagnosis–and the best course of treatment.

Major depressive disorder

In a given year, more than 16 million Americans (a majority of them women) experience this very common type of depression, also known as major depression or clinical depression. Under diagnostic criteria published by the American Psychiatric Association, people must have at least five symptoms persisting for two weeks or longer to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Those symptoms can include feelings of sadness, emptiness, worthlessness, hopelessness, and guilt; loss of energy, appetite, or interest in enjoyable activities; changes in sleep habits; and thoughts of death and suicide. Most cases are highly treatable.

Major depressive disorder has two subtypes: “atypical depression” and “melancholic depression.” People who fall into the former category tend to sleep and eat a lot. They are emotionally reactive and very anxious, Dr. Noble explains. Those in the latter category have trouble sleeping and tend to ruminate over guilt-ridden thoughts, she says. Young adults tend to present with atypical depression, and the melancholic type is seen more often in seniors.

Treatment-resistant depression

Sometimes people with major depressive disorder don’t readily respond to treatment. Even after trying one antidepressant and then another–and maybe a third or fourth–their depression stubbornly hangs on. “Maybe it’s genetic, maybe it’s environmental,” Dr. Noble says. “Their depression is just tenacious.”

Helping people overcome treatment-resistant depression begins with a thorough workup to ensure a proper diagnosis and identify other psychiatric and medical causes of their symptoms. Patients are counseled on proper dosage and duration of treatment. If a medicine isn’t working, doctors will try switching to a similar drug or one from a different class. Patients may benefit from adding a second antidepressant from a different class and perhaps another type of medicine, such as an antipsychotic.

Subsyndromal depression

A person who has depressive symptoms but doesn't quite check all the boxes for a diagnosis of major depression may be deemed “subsyndromal.” Maybe she has three or four symptoms, not five, or maybe she’s been depressed for a week, not two, Dr. Noble explains.

“Rather than look at symptoms, I usually look at functionality,” she says. Is the patient able to go to work and take care of day-to-day responsibilities? If the person is struggling, they may still benefit from treatment, including with medication, she says.

Persistent depressive disorder

People with persistent depressive disorder (PDD) have a low, dark, or sad mood on most days and at least two additional symptoms of depression lasting two years or more. In children and teens, PDD (also called dysthymia) may be diagnosed if symptoms of irritability or depression persist for a year or more. “It may wax and wane in intensity, but generally it’s a low level of depression,” Dr. Noble explains.

To be diagnosed with this type of depression, people must also have two of the following: sleep problems (too much or too little); low energy or fatigue; low self-esteem; poor appetite or overeating; poor concentration or difficulty making decisions; and feelings of hopelessness.

Usually PDD requires treatment with a combination of medication and psychotherapy.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder

Up to 10% of women of childbearing age experience premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). This severe form of PMS can trigger depression, sadness, anxiety, or irritability, as well as other extreme symptoms, in the week before a woman’s period.

“It can be really uncomfortable, disabling, and interfere with a woman’s day-to-day life,” says Dorothy Sit, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Scientists believe these women may have an abnormal sensitivity to hormonal changes during their menstrual cycle. Taking antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, in the two weeks before their period or throughout the month can be very effective, Dr. Sit says. Certain types of contraception may help too. Researchers at the University of California San Diego are exploring the use of light therapy to improve sleep quality and mood in women with PMDD.

Bipolar depression

Wide swings in mood and energy, from elation to hopelessness, are the signature of bipolar depression, also called bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness. To be diagnosed with this form of depression, a person must have experienced at least one bout of mania. Bipolar usually shows up in young adulthood. While women and men are diagnosed in equal numbers, studies point to possible gender differences: Men appear to have more manic behavior; women tend toward depressive symptoms. Bipolar usually worsens without treatment but can be managed with mood stabilizers, antipsychotic medicines, and talk therapy.

While further research is needed, a recent study by Dr. Sit and colleagues suggests light therapy may be a potential treatment for bipolar depression too. Compared with dim placebo light, daily exposure to bright light at midday may reduce symptoms of depression and improve functioning in people with bipolar disorder, the study found.

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder

Screaming and temper tantrums can be features of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), a type of depression diagnosed in children who struggle with regulating their emotions. Other symptoms include an irritable or angry mood most of the day nearly every day and trouble getting along in school, at home, or with their peers.

“These are the kids with strong emotional outbursts,” Dr. Noble says. “They’re just not able to contain their emotions,” so they “act out and act on” their feelings.

Currently, DMDD is treated using medications, psychotherapy, and parent training on how to effectively deal with a child’s irritable behavior.

Postpartum (or perinatal) depression

The birth of a baby brings enormous joy but can sometimes lead to postpartum depression (PPD), a type that affects one in four women and one in eight men. In women, postpartum depression is likely triggered by shifts in hormones, fatigue, and other factors. In men, it’s environmental, brought on by shifting roles and lifestyle changes that come with parenting.

Postpartum depression can begin any time in the first year following a child’s birth, although it usually appears soon after the new arrival. Intense feelings of sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion become overwhelming and can interfere with daily life. It can provoke thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby.

Compared to the “baby blues”–which is a mild, short-lived, and extremely common condition causing anxiety and depressive symptoms in the immediate wake of a baby’s birth–PPD usually requires treatment with antidepressants and/or talk therapy.

Seasonal affective disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a recurring type of depression (also known as seasonal depression) that usually strikes in the fall or winter. Along with a change in mood, SAD sufferers tend to have low energy. They may overeat, oversleep, crave carbs, gain weight, or withdraw from social interaction.

Women and younger adults are at higher risk of developing SAD. It can also run in families. SAD is diagnosed after at least two years of recurring, seasonal symptoms. While the exact cause is unclear, research suggests it may be related to an imbalance of the brain chemical serotonin. An overabundance of the sleep hormone melatonin and insufficient levels of vitamin D may also play a role.

SAD is typically treated with a daily dose of light therapy and sometimes medication.

Substance-induced mood disorder

Using or abusing sedating drugs can change your mood. Symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and loss of interest in pleasurable activities, typically appear shortly after taking or abusing a substance or during withdrawal.

Substances that can lead to this type of depression include alcohol (if you drink too much), opioid painkillers, and benzodiazepines (which act on the central nervous system).

To diagnose someone with a substance-induced mood disorder, doctors must rule out other potential causes of depression, and the depression must be severe enough to interfere with daily activities.

Psychotic depression

People with psychotic depression have severe depression accompanied by psychosis, which is defined as losing touch with reality. Symptoms of psychosis typically include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't really there) and delusions (false beliefs about what's happening)

One of Dr. Noble’s patients, two years after beginning treatment, confessed that she had a year during which she would not eat anything her father cooked because she thought he was poisoning her. The woman was otherwise lucid; she simply suffered from psychotic depression that had not been fully treated.

Doctors usually prescribe antidepressants and antipsychotic medicines together to treat psychotic depression.

Depression due to an illness

Coping with a serious chronic disease, like heart disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and HIV/AIDS, can be depressing in and of itself.

Adding insult to injury, there’s now evidence that disease-related inflammation may also play a role in the onset of depression. Inflammation causes the release of certain chemicals by the immune system that cross into the brain, leading to brain changes that can trigger or worsen depression in certain people, Dr. Noble explains. Antidepressants may help prolong their life and improve their ability to function, she says, and therapy can help many patients cope with mental and physical illnesses.

10 Shows to Binge in the Latest Golden Age of TV

.As someone obsessed with TV shows, I was pleased with the winners from last night’s 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards (full winner list here). With that, I have decided to come up with a list of 10 MUST-WATCH shows worth binging. Each show in the list comes with a binge clock from bingeclock.com, which is the site that tells you how many hours you need to binge a particular show.

Binge culture has brought us another golden age of TV. I had a hard time compiling this list because there are a ton of other shows that I have excluded, but if I had to recommend 10 shows that people should religiously watch, it would be these:

1. If you want a less depressing version of politics: Veep (HBO)

Binge Clock: 1 day 5 hours (Season 1 to 6, final season upcoming)

Even if you are not privy to Washington politics, you will love Veep because the jokes are on point. Julia Louis Dreyfus is a powerhouse comedienne, having won Emmys across three shows (Seinfeld, New Adventures for Old Christine, and Veep). Last night’s award set her a record for not only winning the most number of Best Actress trophies (Seven!), but also winning the most Emmys playing the same character (Six in a row!)

As one friend puts it, “Everyone thinks Washington politics is like House of Cards but really everyone over there is fumbling like Veep.” These days, it’s getting harder and harder to differentiate which is the parody of the other – Veep or Trump’s White House.

A bonus you might be interested in: Julia Louis Dreyfus and Joe Biden team up together for a short during the 2014 White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

2. All-around feel good comedy: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)

Binge Clock: 18 hours 12 minutes (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 upcoming)

You probably have seen Titus gifs around the internet.

Co-creator Tina Fey originally planned to air the show on NBC as a successor to her critically-acclaimed hit 30 Rock (which you should totally binge by the way), but instead Netflix poached this show. Aside from the tons and tons of references, some of the actors were also from 30 Rock, such as Jane Krakowski (supporting actress) and Tituss Burgess (occasional guest star). Tina Fey herself shows up in some of the episodes as Kimmy’s therapist.

The title of the show explains it all – Kimmy Schmidt is unbreakable because she manages to live life in New York City even after being kidnapped by a cult leader and trapped in a bunk for 10 years. The opening sequence is one of my most favorite sequences of all time, and I never skip it.

Personal favorite? Season 3 Episode 2. Titus doing Lemonade will make you forget all your problems.

3. Show some Filipino-American pride: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)

Binge Clock: 1 day 7 hours (Season 1 and 2, Season 3 coming this fall)

Speaking of opening sequences, I also love both Season 1 and 2 opening sequences of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Again, the title of the show explains it all. Rebecca Bunch was a successful lawyer in NYC but decided to move to suburban California after serendipitously meeting her teen flame Josh Chan and spends the rest of the show obsessing over how to get him back. Given that this is California, Josh Chan is played by a Filipino-American actor (Vincent Rodriguez III). The opening sequence pretty much summarizes the premise:

Because the head writer, Rene Gube, is also Filipino-American, the show is littered with Filipino cultural references. Personal favorite: Season 1 Episode 5. Rebecca is invited to a Filipino thanksgiving and she serves up some dinuguan (pork blood stewed in vinegar) to impress the family (video below). The show is a comedy musical – you will have LSS with songs like “The Sexy Getting Ready Song.” Season 1 finale also features Filipino Broadway pride Lea Salonga.

4. All-around awesomeness: Master of None (Netflix)

Binge Clock: 10 hours (Season 1 and 2, hopefully Season 3 comes sooner!)

Speaking of Asian Americans, praise Aziz Anzari for this show. I was lukewarm to Aziz on Parks and Recreation (which you should totally binge by the way!) but I am obsessed with him on Master of None. Each episode is a standalone mini-movie: the title of the show is in reference to the phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

Personal favorites (and also both Emmy winners): Season 1 Episode 2 Parents and Season 2 Episode 8 Thanksgiving. In Parents, Aziz’s real life parents make a cameo as the parents of Dev Shah, Aziz’s character, as the episode discusses intergenerational issues in immigrant families. Thanksgiving features the coming out story of Denise, played by Lena Waithe, who is a black queer woman.

Aziz takes time writing these episodes. Season 2, which was released earlier this year, came two years after Season 1. Netflix greenlighted Season 3, but time can only tell when that is coming!

5. The meta-telenovela: Jane the Virgin (The CW)

Binge Clock: 2 days 16 hours (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 coming this fall)

This show is so popular in the Philippines that major network ABS-CBN dubbed the first two seasons and showed it on primetime. The show has this classic telenovela feel, but poignantly makes fun of all of the stereotypes while still coming up with a coherent romantic comedy.

The premise is Jane, who has never had sex in her life being raised strictly as a Catholic in a Hispanic immigrant family, gets accidentally artificially inseminated with Rafael’s sperm during a routine gynecology check-up. By the end of Season 1, you will choose sides, are you Team Baby Daddy (Team Rafael) or Team Boyfriend (Team Michael)?

But beyond the love triangle, this show is psychologically smart. It deals with heartbreak, and various levels of losses in a way that’s endearing while also very educational. My personal favorite episode is when Jane finally loses her virginity in Season 3 – I won’t tell which episode exactly!

6. The news explainer: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Binge Clock: 2 days 8 hours (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 ongoing)

Jon Stewart has mentored a lot of correspondents on the Daily Show, and they have since starred in their own late night shows, such as Stephen Colbert (who starred in the highly successful Colbert Report on Comedy Central and now succeeds David Letterman on the Late Show at CBS) and Samantha Bee (her show Full Frontal is on TBS). Trevor Noah may have been Jon Stewart’s successor on The Daily Show (I also love Trevor Noah by the way), but the real successor to Jon Stewart is John Oliver.

Every Sunday on late night, John Oliver goes on a 20 or 30-minute rant about an issue that you might not be aware and you will care about it after. The monologues are available for free on the show’s YouTube channel (YAY!) which you can access here.

7. This is too real: Black Mirror (Channel 4, then moved to Netflix)

Binge Clock: 12 hours 21 minutes (Season 1 to 3, Season 4 upcoming)

Black Mirror is an allusion to the black mirrors of our smartphone/laptop/tablet screens. Each episode is a TV movie in itself, dealing with at least one ethical issue on the future of technology. It used to air on Channel 4 in the UK, where 7 episodes were successfully aired, but Netflix picked it up and ordered 6 episodes for Season 3, and another 6 coming soon.

My personal favorite is Season 3 Episode 4 San Junipero – I won’t even spoil you any details, just watch it please. I am so glad it won the two Emmy Awards it was nominated for.

8. The most underrated actress in my lifetime is in this show: Orphan Black (BBC America)

Binge Clock: 2 days 2 hours (5 Seasons, just ended over the summer)

Tatiana Maslany deserves far more recognition than what she is getting now. After getting snubbed at the Emmys for Best Drama Actress during the first three seasons, she got her due last year when she won the award, having only been nominated for the first time that year. She plays more than a dozen characters on the show, as the show revolves around life of clones under codename Project Leda.

The fifth and final season just ended over the summer, so for those who love to binge after the shows end, this is perfect for you.

9. Breakout comedy star: Atlanta (FX)

Binge Clock: 6 hours, 30 minutes (Season 1, Season 2 upcoming)

Donald Glover – I don’t even know where to begin explaining how awesome he is. You may love him as Childish Gambino, his musical alterego, or his character on Community (NBC, then later Yahoo! Screen). Atlanta is primarily Danny’s brainchild, where he stars, directs, and writes most of the episodes, similar to how Aziz Anzari is with Master of None.

The show revolves around Glover’s character, Alfred Miles, an up-and-coming rap artist trying to make his way into the music industry in Atlanta. I personally have not watched it yet as of date, but it is on top of my to-watch list. After winning multiple Emmy awards last night, I better make time for this.

10. Breakout drama star: The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)

Binge clock: 10 hours (Season 1, Season 2 upcoming)

Digital platforms are getting more and more savvy when competing with traditional network and cable TV. Netflix has been investing hundreds and millions of dollars producing hundreds of original content (and a lot of good ones as you can see in my list), while Amazon Prime and Hulu are following the same suit. Amazon Prime has Transparent as its centerpiece (which you should totally binge also by the way), while Hulu has found theirs recently with The Handmaid’s Tale. The show bagged a lot of awards in the Emmys this year.

The show is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name. The premise is about a dystopian future where woman are subjected as a slaves in order to address the plummeting birth rate of the human race. Its main competition during the Emmys, Westworld (HBO), also talks about a dystopian future where the rich can live out their most disgusting and illegal desires on humanlike robots on a playground called Westworld (Yes, binge Westworld also please!)

As I have mentioned, there are a ton more shows, and I know a lot of you have them in mind. But these are my personal favorites, the last two of which I cannot wait to binge.

Please Help A Father And His Daughter

The Never Ending Case

Thanks you for taking the time to read my story.

I'm a single dad who has been entrenched within the Family Court System for almost six years now. If your a single father who has gone thought this or going through it now, I sympathies with you. I'm sorry for the loss you've experienced in your life as well. What they taken from us is sacred to us as father's as it is just as equally to our child.

It is those moments that we wish we were there for. It is the torment that the mother of our children bestow upon us by alienating us from our kids. They take time that we will never get back. We must put an end to this once and for all and that requires us to fight for what is right. I truly feel that my quest to solve my case is not just for my sake, but for the sake of anyone else who finds them faced with these issues in our current legal system.

Please help me put a stop to this, by helping me brining my child home.

I grew up in Southern California where I lived for 18 years of my life. After high school I relocated to Washington with my family where I helped them run a family owned business before venturing off on my own to began a career in the mortgage business at just 20 years old. I purchased my first home two years later and maintained it for 10 years. Ever since I was a little kid, I had always envisioned myself working hard and to one day marry a woman to start a family with. I always had the dream to give my children the loving family life that I was blessed to enjoy growing up as a kid. In 2008 I was promoted to a management position in Phoenix Arizona. She I and dated for 3.5 years. We never lived together during that time because made the choice to go the traditional route. We figured if we followed gods will and did everything “right” our marriage would last forever. After proposing at the top of Camel Back Mountain in Arizona, I saved my money for an entire year and paid $22,000 to give her the wedding of her dreams. We then went on our honeymoon where we became pregnant with our child.

I was the happiest man alive to learn that I was going to be a father and I was devoted to give my family everything I had to make a good life for my family. After getting married we move to Washington and moved to home that I still owned there. In that first year of marriage, things between my wife and I became rocky. While she was pregnant, I was working full time and paying for her to attend college. I was also working on several house projects to get the home ready for our child who soon be born. During her pregnancy my wife began feeling depressed and isolated from her family who lived in San Antonio. I knew we had problems in our marriage but I also knew I was doing everything I could make things work for our new family. On the morning of May 25th 2012 I was scheduled to attend an interview for a job. When I arrived home to deliver the good news, they were gone.

It wasn’t until 5 days later that I was subpoenaed with court papers. It was at that moment I read what happened. Instead of going about our divorce in an amicable manner, she and her mother who was visiting us from San Antonio initiated their case via an ex-parte hearing in King County Civil Court. They made false accusations of domestic violence and claimed that their lives would be in danger if they were not granted the right to flee the state immediately. Without any evidence or even a single police report, a King County Judge issued them a temporary order authorizing them right to leave the state with my child.

"The Justice Department found that 41% of parental abductions occurred before the marital relationship ended. Id. at 8. 7."

During the initial stages our case, the opposing counsel was attorney Amanda DuBois. In their statement to the court, they were requesting that I be evaluated by a man named Douglas Bartholomew.

After researching this man I quickly realized my wife was not being honest about her interest in saving our marriage. She was trying to set me up for failure at the recommendation of her attorney Miss BuBois.

What I found was that Bartholomew was regarded by the court as an "expert" in the area of DV. He provided many evaluations for cases in King County. Over a 20 year span and during that time this man destroyed the lives of many fathers and their rights to their children.

The most alarming article we found talked about how Bartholomew, when questioned on the stand in a recent case, admits to never evaluating a man who does not need DV Treatment.

I would later find that my hunch about Bartholomew was correct. After my attorney stated my concerns about him in court, I agreed to complete two separate DV Evaluations. One evaluator chosen by the court, and one I voluntarily obtained on my own. By the end, both findings concluded the same. No DV Occurred.

After my case was dropped, published in the Seattle Weekly newspaper read...

That is when I knew I had some pretty damming evidence to support that Attorney DuBois had intentionally tried to interfere with my parental rights to my child. She knew that if she could get me to be evaluated by Bartholomew, I would inevitably be found guilty of DV. As you can hear in testimony from my case, my attorney suggested that she was “Judge Shopping”. Commissioner Ponomarchuk followed by angrily voicing his opinion about DuBois’s repeated history in his story about “the boy who cried wolf”. Yet despite all of this, the court still allowed this case to continue, and it ultimately dictated the outcome in favor of the mother to move to Texas.

As a result of several extensions and unnecessary delays, I was wrongfully separated from my daughter for 5 months in the initial stages of our divorce. After the DV case got delayed yet again, she was required to fly up from San Antonio to Seattle several times in the months preceding towards our divorce. The judge required that I be giving residential time with my daughter in Seattle.

This time in her life was truly heartbreaking to experience. I hated sing my child have to fly back in fourth, yet even with the little time I had with my daughter back then, her mother and maternal grandmother still continue to torment me and my baby.

During my first weekend visit with her during this time, her and her mother left my daughter with me at my home. The then preceded to violate their own temporary restraining order by remain parked down the street from my house in the blazing heat for 8 hours. They called the police on me when I took my child to church. The cops agreed with me and the orders written by the judge, yet the next day they refused to give me my child unless I agreed to paying for a supervised visit even though the judge did not require supervised visits. They would later be yelled at in court by Commissioner Ponomarchuk for pulling this stunt as well. This drug on and on for 1.5 year of my child's life and it destroyed me along the way.

The entire DV case and divorced in Washington State cost my family and me over $50,000 to protect my rights to my child. In the end it was proven that domestic violence never occurred and they dropped their case. We were then transferred to Family Court to begin divorce proceedings. Despite spending all that time and money to have my child returned to Washington, she was quickly granted the right to formally relocate with our daughter. As the judges ruling states, motion to relocate with the child is granted,

“due to the 5 month’s that the father was not been in the child’s life”

In essence, she and her mother had effectively gotten away scot-free with Interstate Child Abduction. It was carried out by means of false accusations that were strategically crafted to work within a failed legal system. Despite her attorney being called out on this in court for having a history of “judge shopping”and “manipulating the court process” the outcome of this case still ended the way they wanted it to.

My Current Situation

After our divorce settled, I moved to San Antonio and have been living here for five and a half years. Although I have made every right choice for the best interest of my child, her mother and maternal grandmother have relentlessly continued to disrupt any sense of peace I find in my life by continuing to further isolate me from my child. Every time my life seems to be get back on track, they manage blindside me with something new to drag me through the mud in court with. These repeated efforts which I have yet to gain relief from, has continued to derail any financial progress I have been able to make for myself.

Over these last 5 years they have filed false CPS reports, violated court orders, withheld my child from me on multiple occasions, and now in this current debacle, they have colluded with a spiteful ex employee I had been managing and was advised to let go at the direction of my upper management. This is a 51 year old careless woman who turned hostile towards me because I didn't have an interest in pursuing a relationship with her. She knew that I was fighting a new modification case on my parenting plan as a pro-se litigant and decided to spitefully retaliate against me by colluding with my ex-wife to file a 2nd false CPS report. Although that report was closed and found inconclusive, the mother of my child is now taking the law into her own hands by withholding my daughter from me yet again!

At this point I’m sure you can understand why I can say I’m tired. The stress of the first case alone was enough to cripple the human body. But on top of that, my neck hurts every day from two herniated disks that were caused by a hit and run accident that happened shortly after they filed this recent modification case. I feel physically and emotionally exhausted from years of being in a consistent state of emotional distress at the mercy of these people. The worst part now is that I miss my daughter who I know loves me dearly and is wondering why her daddy is not there. Over the years her mother has trained her to think that daddy work is more important and is too busy for her. This is Parental Alienation at its finest. It is causing my child hand and I need it to stop.

I know that I cannot do this on my own anymore. I have sought help from every legal aid resource I could find yet nobody seems to be willing to help unless I pay him or her money that I do not have anymore.

The last attorney I was referred to by Legal Shield named Alison Hicks required I pay her a retainer fee of $3,750 and after that she refused to return a single phone call. She abandoned my case and several months later sent me a bill for $3,750. I’m now trying to work with the Bar Association to get that money back. This is not the first time she's done this, as you can see from other's who posted similar reviews on Avvo.

Why I'm Raising This Money

Your contribution towards this cause will be used to bring several people to justice for interfering with my parental rights. I intend to seek primary residential custody of my daughter because my child deserves to be with the parent who mission in life is not to remove the other parent from her life. With proper funding for my case, and the right legal team, this case has the potential to make a ground-breaking impact in the fight for fathers rights in our country.

Interstate child abduction is one of the worst things that can happen to a child if the other parent could not just up and move like I did. Kids are often being taken away from loving fathers who they need and desire in their lives.This sort of thing has continued to destroy the lives of men like me for far to many years, and some have unfortunately taken their own lives as a result of things like this.

I consider myself lucky that god has given me the strength continue on as long as I have. I know that I made the right choice to follow my child but if I don’t find a way to raise this money, I feel that I may have no choice but throw up my arms and walk away. I really don’t want to do that but the mother of my child continues to violate court orders and she continues to gets away it as she is backed by an seemingly endless supply of money from her parents. I know I am only one out of many who have experienced these things in life. But with your help I will promise to stay committed to taking this case as far as I have to and prevail in my cause to bring radical reform to a system that is truly harming our children.

This Common Food Ingredient Is 'Scary as Hell' Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Up to 180 million Americans use artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, routinely.1 But the idea that they're a safe alternative to sugar, even one that promotes weight loss, is a deceiving myth. In fact, the story of aspartame has been deceitful from the beginning. Drug company G.D. Searle & Company first discovered aspartame in the 1960s. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974 based on studies submitted by the drug maker. An FDA scientist pointed out "serious shortcomings" with all the studies the FDA used to make their approval decision. Tonic, which described the story of aspartame's approval as "scary as hell," reported: "For example, some rats in the studies died but were not autopsied after to discern the cause; in other cases, the aspartame was not mixed well enough into the feed and the rats were eating around it. There was also evidence of brain tumors in the rats in several studies," they said.2 The FDA's next move was to set up a public board of inquiry composed of outside experts to investigate the safety of aspartame, and in 1980 that board unanimously rejected aspartame's request for approval. Meanwhile, many are not aware of Donald Rumsfeld's involvement in the approval of aspartame. Rumsfeld served as White House chief of staff from 1974 to 1975. He was also secretary of defense from 1975 to 1977 and again from 2001 to 2006. In 1976, however, Rumsfeld became CEO of G.D. Searle. Tonic commented: "He was also on the transition team for Ronald Reagan, who was inaugurated in 1981. After the inauguration, Searle reapplied to the FDA for approval, at which point Reagan fired the FDA commissioner and replaced him with Arthur Hayes Hull Jr., who reapproved aspartame for dry products."3 Just two years later the artificial sweetener was approved for use in liquid products, like diet soda, and the rest is history. Serious Aspartame Safety Questions Remain There's a reason why, when asked whether or not he would consume aspartame, Dr. Robert Lustig, pediatric neuroendocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, said, "No way in hell." As he told Tonic, "We just don't have the data" to prove its safety.4 On the contrary, there's mounting evidence that it's dangerous. In 1996, for instance, researchers suggested that the increasing rate of brain tumors in the U.S. could be linked to aspartame, particularly since it was introduced to the U.S. market several years prior to a sharp increase in malignant brain tumors.5 They cited an early animal study that found an "exceedingly high incidence of brain tumors" in rats fed aspartame, as well as evidence that the aspartame molecule has "mutagenic potential." A study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, which treated six groups of mice with aspartame from before their birth until their deaths, also found that this toxic artificial sweetener induces cancers of the liver and lungs in male mice.6 Another study of great importance was published in 2012.7 The study spanned more than 20 years and evaluated the link between aspartame intake and cancer. They found a clear association between aspartame consumption and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and leukemia. Artificial Sweeteners Might Make You Fat Perhaps the greatest scam of all is including these "zero-calorie" sweeteners in diet foods and drinks, which people consume with the impression that they may help with weight loss. The opposite is actually true. In April 2017, research presented at ENDO 2017, the Endocrine Society's 99th annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, once again found that artificial sweeteners promote metabolic dysfunction that may promote the accumulation of fat.8 The study tested sucralose (brand name Splenda) on stem cells taken from human fat tissue, which revealed that a dose similar to what would be found in the blood of someone who drinks four cans of diet soda a day increased the expression of genes linked to fat production and inflammation, as well as increased fat droplets on cells.9 The study's lead author, Dr. Sabyasachi Sen, associate professor of medicine and endocrinology at George Washington University in Washington D.C., noted in a press release:10 "From our study, we believe low-calorie sweeteners promote additional fat formation by allowing more glucose to enter the cells, and promotes inflammation, which may be more detrimental in obese individuals." The fact that the artificial sweetener was associated with increased glucose uptake in the cells was particularly concerning, as it could have detrimental effects for people with elevated blood sugar levels, like those with diabetes or pre-diabetes — a population that's often told to swap sugar for the artificial sweeteners.11 Aspartame May Promote Obesity and Inflammation Research has also linked aspartame to weight gain and obesity. A study on mice revealed that animals fed aspartame-laced drinking water gained weight and developed symptoms of metabolic syndrome while mice not fed the artificial sweetener did not. Further, the researchers revealed that phenylalanine, an aspartame breakdown product, blocks the activity of a gut enzyme called alkaline phosphatase (IAP). In a previous study, IAP was found to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome (and reduce symptoms in those with the condition) when fed to mice.12 Aspartame likely promotes obesity by interfering with IAP activity. Mice in the study were fed either plain water or water infused with the equivalent amount of aspartame found in two to 3.5 cans of soda, along with a normal diet or a high-fat diet. Mice in the high-fat group that drank aspartame-infused water gained more weight than those eating the same diet without aspartame in their water. Further, all the mice fed aspartame had higher blood sugar levels — an indicator of glucose intolerance — and higher levels of inflammatory protein TNF-alpha, which is suggestive of systemic inflammation. Given aspartame's inhibition of IAP, the researchers suggested its use is counterproductive. Other research found drinking aspartame-sweetened diet soda daily increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 67 percent (regardless of whether the participants gained weight or not) and the risk of metabolic syndrome 36 percent.13 Artificial sweeteners may increase your risk of weight gain, obesity and other related problems like type 2 diabetes by inducing "metabolic derangements," according to a report published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism.14 The Many Reasons to Ditch Diet Soda: Increased Risk of Dementia and Stroke I don't recommend drinking soda, whether regular or diet, but most people are aware of the pitfalls of sugar-sweetened soda. Diet soda, on the other hand, has managed to hold on to the reputation that it's somehow a more sensible alternative. This is not at all the case. A recent study has even found that drinking diet soda daily may increase your risk of stroke and dementia three-fold.15 Even drinking artificially sweetened beverages one to six times a week was linked to a 2.6 times greater risk of stroke.16 For a bit of background, when aspartame is in liquid form, as it is in diet soda, it breaks down into methyl alcohol, or methanol, which is then converted into formaldehyde and represents the root of the problem with aspartame. Research has even found that the administration of aspartame to rats resulted in detectable methanol even after 24 hours, which might be responsible for inducing oxidative stress in the brain.17 Diet soda, which is often sweetened with aspartame, meanwhile has its own set of problems. People who drank diet soda had a 70 percent greater increase in waist size in a 10-year period compared to non-diet soda drinkers, for instance. If you're pregnant, you'll also want to steer clear of artificial sweeteners. In 2016, a study found that women who consumed artificially sweetened beverages daily during pregnancy had babies with a two-fold higher risk of being overweight at the age of 1 year.18 Diet Soda Drinkers Have a 30 Percent Higher Risk of Depression Preliminary research presented at the 65th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology found those who drank more than four cans or glasses of diet soda or other artificially sweetened beverages had a nearly 30 percent higher risk of depression compared to those who did not consume diet drinks.19 Meanwhile, a report published in the journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism highlighted the fact that diet soda drinkers suffer the same health problems as those who opt for regular soda, such as excessive weight gain, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. The researchers noted:20 " … [C]onsuming sweet-tasting but noncaloric or reduced-calorie food and beverages [may] interfere with learned responses that normally contribute to glucose and energy homeostasis. Because of this interference, frequent consumption of high-intensity sweeteners may have the counterintuitive effect of inducing metabolic derangements." And the risks go on. Research published in PLOS One found regularly consuming artificially sweetened soft drinks is associated with several disorders of metabolic syndrome, including21 Abdominal obesity Insulin resistance Impaired glucose intolerance Abnormally elevated fats in the blood High blood pressure The study found drinking aspartame-sweetened diet soda daily increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 67 percent (whether they gained weight or not) and the risk of metabolic syndrome 36 percent.
