Mansae Entertainement Interviews: Dane Amar (Show Me The Money 6)

Dane Amar is a Laotian-American rapper who is a contestant on the upcoming season of MNET’s Show Me The Money, a Korean hip-hop survival competition show which rappers and producers like Microdot, Miryo (from Brown Eyed Girls), Cheetah, Bobby (from iKON), Zion.T, and as of last season, Timbaland, team up and compete to win first place! Last season was won by BewhY and producer team Simon Dominic and Gray from AMOG. He took the time to interview us his thoughts on the show and about his rapping inspirations! Read after the break!

Q: How did you find out about SMTM?

A:I actually found out about SMTM around season 5 when one of my friends showed me it, he told me that they were coming and looking for rappers out in LA so I went to go audition not really knowing what I was going for but just to give it a chance. When I went and researched I had no idea how big of a show it was and how great of an opportunity just fell in my lap.

Q:What made you decide to audition?

A:Well, I've always been a Hip-Hop head since a kid. You say it and i've probably heard it. When I found out that Timbaland was going to be a guest judge for season 5 I couldn't let this go and slip me by, I used to stay up late nights as a kid to watch Timbaland make beats for Jay-Z and Kanye, this man is a legend and to even have the chance to rap for him was something I wasn't going to take lightly. I had to go and I had to give it my all.

Q:How was the audition process?

A:In one word? Long. Super long. All you guys see is when all the editors cut but it takes us hours to get the shots, we've been there for about 4 hours before we actually get to rapping for the producers. So if you're looking into doing this, make sure you're ready to sit and wait because they don't play with filming. They'll make you redo shots as many times as possible until one comes out perfect.

Q: Fans would like to know how the judges are in person? What did you think of them.

A: All of the ones that I could talk to (since I only know english) were super humble. A lot of them even told me about how if this isn't the time that I get chosen it doesn't mean that its a sign to give up. Always pursue what you want and with that being said it really resonated. Super nice people, just like you and me, they just have tremendous amounts of talent.

Q:Who are you excited to see in SMTM 6?

A:I'm excited to see how Dean and Jay Park judge, I know they're both new to the show so i know that they'll definitely have a different outlook than people like Dok2 or Zico who have been on the show for a while. A fresh perspective is always nice to something like TV thats always growing.

About Dane Amar:

Q: When did you start rapping?

A:I started rapping in 6th grade but i've honestly been writing lyrics since as early as 6 years old. I knew music was all I wanted to do since an early age and without trying to sound pathetic it's kind of the only thing's that i'm good at. It's for real all that I want to do with my life, and I can't see myself without it.

Q: How did you come up with the name Dane Amar?

A:Honestly I was just changing names from my former name to make something more marketable. I wanted to make myself a brand and not so much an underground rapper. I wanted to break into the mainstream and my name before didn't allow me to do that. With this name i'm at least a step in the right direction.

Q: Do you have any upcoming singles or shows?

A:No shows right now, but I did just drop a 9 song project called Yellow Umbrella which is available on all streaming platforms! All songs were produced, written, performed, and engineered by me which is something i'm completely proud of.

Q: Who is your favorite artist?

A:Man, I just have so many it's hard to narrow it down so i'll name my top 5 CURRENT artist, all legacy artists like Tupac and Biggie are excused since they're the obvious choice.

1. Jon Bellion - Amazing Songwriter, singer, and producer definitely a huge inspiration in the sound I try to achieve now 2. Vince Staples - He just embodies the life of the West, and the way he flows is insane he's one of the best rappers out right now no question. 3. KYLE - If you haven't heard of KYLE yet you definitely will. His attitude towards music is amazing and he's definitely someone who inspires me flow wise. 4. Logic - Just on a technical level Logic is your favorite rappers favorite rapper. He is dope and the positive music that he spreads is something that can't be beat. 5. Kehlani - Amazing songwriter and singer, someone i want to sit down and write a song with. She writes from such a deep place and thats what I strive to do with every song.

Q: If you could tour anywhere, where would it be?

A:Definitely the US. When I get bigger I would love to go on tour and see the faces of people who listen to my music and pick their brains on why they like my stuff!

Q: Who/what is your inspiration?

A:Life and relationships. Everything that I write about is something that happened to me or something that I thought of while at a time in my life. Experience is something you can't fake and thats why I take every chance that I can to become a better person.
