Day Eighty-one
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's that time again!
Waking early in Aberystwyth and it's nice to be finally not hearing the wind whistling through the foliage in the morning! The winds are still present but a far cry from the 50mph+ gales from Storm Betty.
It's a 6am alarm for me today as I'm camped in a fairly urban area, though I've still managed to secrete myself into a good patch of trees. It's not my preference, but weeks of stealth camping swiftly teach you that people don't look, and if they do look then they don't see, and if they do see then they don't care. Be bold!
On with the show - I initially backtrack a little to the supermarket from yesterday to top up on water, only to realise it's Sunday and the place doesn't open for another couple of hours. Oh well! I have enough to tide me over for now.
The cycle routes out from Aberystwyth track deeply inland, so it's another day on the busy A roads to keep heading south.
The terrain south of Aberystwyth is lush and green, but also tremendously hilly, and today is straight into some stiff climbs and heavy work. Whilst I'm a little sheltered from the wind, it's a very warm day today and makes for some sweaty going.
The A487 yracks reasonably close to the coastline down Cardigan Bay, but as it weaves through the hills it's obscured for much of the way so far. The trees lining the road do at least keep the headwinds at bay for now.
After some difficult climbs I finally get a great view along the coast at Aberarth, before rolling down to take a break at the pretty town of Aberaeron.
Out from here is another very steep hill up from sea level to Ffos-y-ffin before the road starts rolling into to hilltops once again.
The A road tracks a little more inland around New Quay, and a check of the map gives a real rabbit warren of roads to navigate to hold closer to the coast proper. Given the slower going over the last few days, and that I'd end up spending much of the day glued to my phone checking the route to navigate it, I elect to stick with the main road to grind some more miles out.
It's some very heavy going on the approach to Cardigan, with the road rising up to nearly 1000ft above the sea in a long, long ascent. The traffic makes for hard going, and the wind joins in to turn this stretch into a real slog.
Getting some height does give some good views though. The hills of Wales are like a patchwork quilt of fields, stiched together with rows of hedges.
Finally the road starts its descent back downhill and I roll into Cardigan a little after 3pm, and have a good long sit and break to refuel. It's busy with people but the aun is out and it's a lovely place to be.
There's still plenty of light left in the day though, so onwards! Across Afon Teifi and swinging a right, it's time to get off the main road and stick closer to the coast, following the cycle trail through St Dogmaels and straight up another 800ft+ hill.
It's more hard slogging but gives some really stunning views back, and I'm grateful to take the opportunity for aome short breaks whilst gazing over the land.
Over the hill, the road crashes back down with a 20% descent down to Moylgrove, before spiking straight back up once more. With the sun beating down still, I'm coursing with sweat and it's taken a couple of hours since departing Cardigan to make fairly short progress over the cliffs here.
The hills southward make for a beautiful sight though, and all the more pleasing to recall climbing up them in years past!
Eventually I clamber over the summit and get a zooming ride down the lanes to cross the River Nevern and into Newport.
It's been some challenging going today and I'm really happy with the distance covered, and after passing a cheap campsite on the outskirts of Newport I decide to say hell and reward myself with a proper place to set the tent up and enjoy a very needed shower after the heat and effort of the day. And it comes complete with a beautiful view of Newport Beach, and some lovely fellow campers who are keen to share travelling tales.
With that, it's time to rest the legs and have a good lie down! I think a later start and gentler day may be had tomorrow, but we shall see.
TTFN!

This question relates to the A487, which runs from the roundabout in Penparcau, past the Co-op and other shops, down to Trefechan and into Aberystwyth. The area in Penparcau which the A487 runs through is heavily residential and may have the speed re-classified to 20mph. This could make the road safer, reduce air pollution and support Active Travel and wellbeing. Petitions have been made in the past to reduce the speed of the road, there have also been questions raised by other politicians, such as Ben Lake MP (Ceredigion), Elin Jones AM (Ceredigion), Eluned Morgan AM and Joyce Watson AM.  It would obviously be beneficial to the residents in the area, to local businesses, tourism could benefit, so could wildlife and it would reduce carbon and air pollution in an area with more children than any other in the county.  Question from Helen Mary Jones AM Mid and West Wales WAQ79184 (e)Tabled on 03/12/2019
Will the Minister provide an update on progress of the review into speed limit reductions on the A487 in Penparcau?
Answered by Minister for Economy and Transport Answered on 05/12/2019
The Speed Limit Review work is currently ongoing and is programmed to be completed by the end of this financial year. Any works or actions arising from the review will be prioritised and subject to availability of funding.

Day Eighty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's another day!
The eye of Storm Betty has rolled up the coast in the night, but I've been very well sheltered in a nice little forest, and the rain forecast to last through until noon hasn't materialised.
However, the winds are still swirling round and are now gusting up from the southwest up to 40mph.
So it's up and at 'em this morning for a nice blustery start with a roll across Afon Dysynni and down to Tywyn to top up on water for the day.
Out from Tywyn, it's up the hill and southward on the A493 to head round to the pretty town of Aberdyfi at the mouth of the broad River Dyfi.
There's no bridge or ferry here, so it's time for a long ride inland as the road follows the course of the river, running along the cliffsides as it runs along the south edge of Eryri National Park.
After being treated to aome good views across the river, I finally reach Dyfi Bridge and turn aouth to head past Machynlleth, and on to the busy A487 as it runs back along the other aide of the river towards the coast once more.
It's a ride through a lot of wooded areas here which, whilst not amazing for views, does offer a little protection from the gale swirling around overhead.
I get to duck off the A road at Tre'r-ddol to atrike back out to the coast proper at Ynyslas. The road out heads across the plains by the estuary and whilst there's a nice glimpse back at Aberdyfi, the wind is now able to blast solidly across the landscape and it's head down for a ways here.
The road heads straight along the coastal defenses past Morfa Borth, with the wind causing big white crests along the top of the waves.
Continuing south, there's a big hill to tackle with multiple 25% gradient warning signs, but not much to do except alog upwards. Cresting the top gives a superb view back up the coast from where I've been so far today.
The south side of the hill is a gentler descent and gives a good few miles of easy coasting through nice country lanes to head down to Clarach, before veering back up over the hills again.
The steep hill requires a serious hairpin in the road as it grinds upwards, but after aome tough work the road runs down to connect with the A487 at the outskirts of Aberystwyth.
A nice zoom downhill here and a short meander through town brings me back to the coast proper once more, with the strong winds blowing in from the sea worth enduring for a nice sit to watch the waves crash in.
I head back through town along some of the nice cycle pathing here to atop off at a supermarket for a resupply, and then have a good sit to write this up.
This wind has been quite something for the last couple of days! With the low pressure zone finally passing further north they should start to ease up a little, but in the meantime it's been quite some work to slog away with auch a headwind, so I'm calling time on today to allow a good long sit on a comfy bench and will find a spot on the outskirts of Aberystwyth to settle for the night.
TTFN!
