AEK 2 Aris Thessaloniki 0
14th April 2024 – Greek Super League – OPAP Arena, Athens, Greece Despite being only separated 4 miles, the stadiums of AEK and Panathinaikos might as well be in playing in different decades.  For all the run down charm of the Stadio Apóstolos Nikolaidas, you can only imagine what the club could be possible of if they had the facilities even half as good as AEK have at the Agia Sophia, or to…

I am not a fan of any sports clubs but I have been following closely the news about AEK’s new “Hagia Sophia” stadium, OPAP Arena, for no reason other than that it seems the stadium will be looking real good once it’s ready. In fact, it might prove to be the prettiest stadium we will have in Greece.
In case you are wondering about the name, AEK was founded in 1924 and its full name Αθλητική Ένωση Κωνσταντινουπολιτών means Sports Association of the Greeks of Constantinople. The club was founded two years after the Greco-Turkish war by Greeks who had fled or been deported from Istanbul and Asia Minor. Hence the Hagia Sophia reference. AEK had the Nikos Goumas stadium in Nea Philadelphia prior to this one but it was demolished after an earthquake caused irreparable damage.
The new stadium will have many facilities besides the ones associated strictly with the games, including a museum for the history of the club and most importantly a museum for the history of the Greek refugees from Asia Minor.

The stadium will also have traditional barber and shoe polishing shops in the fashion of early 20th Century Constantinople.

Close to the stadium’s entrance there will also be the chapel of Hagia Sophia.

Locker rooms.
The stadium won’t have numbered gates except for Gate No 21 (AEK’s gate). The rest will be named after important AEK athletes. The entrances to the gates will each feature information about historical hotspots of Greek presence in Asia Minor.
Tumblr media
The entrance of the stadium is decorated with a steel statue of the club’s symbol, the two-headed eagle (which is also the symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church).
I am so into most of these aesthetics that I am on the verge of becoming an AEK fan just for the sake of the stadium XD The wholesome thing is that many Greek fans of other clubs have praised or expressed impatience to visit this stadium, which is important because Greek fans are typically very petty and competitive. I don’t know how it compares to big stadiums in other countries but I am pretty sure that for the standards of our own, OPAP Arena will most likely be the best football stadium we have. The stadium’s grand opening is expected in September.

This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:
Being murdered while having a drink
Everybody saw them, but the Greek Police
‘Silver alert’ for the Greek PM
It seems no week lacks grim news in this country - not even in August. On Monday night, 29-year-old AEK football team supporter Michalis Katsouris was murdered by Croatian neonazi hooligans of Dinamo Zagreb who arrived in the country despite UEFA’s ban and multiple official warnings to the Greek police.
Neighboring countries informed the Greek authorities of the hooligans crossing into Greece, with Montenegro giving even plate numbers. The Greek Sports Violence Department and even public transportation officers warned them. Yet, the Greek police ‘lost track’ of the 150-200 people convoy, and they did not arrive on the spot until after the hooligans attacked bystanders and murdered Katsouris.
The PM had not made a single relevant statement until Friday evening. The government tries to shake off all political responsibility by blaming the fiasco solely on the police.
No one feels safe in this country anymore.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week's updates on the events and developments in Greece here: https://steadyhq.com/en/athenslivegr/posts/ed263ad8-9d15-4e8b-94c9-da3012a4a1e6

Chapter 05 - Like a last minute own goal
It’s Tuesday and I’m in a bar in Athens watching the penalty shootout between Panathinaikos and Olympique de Marseille. Sitting next to me there’s a man with an AEK jersey and two wearing the Olympiacos uniform.
Across the street, away from this curious scene, standing tall and shiny, there’s a hotel. The hotel I’ll be staying at for the next 30 hours or so. And so is the entirety of the Manchester City squad.
So for the time being, for the sake of my own sanity, I’ll be sitting here at this charming Greek bar sipping one of the few non-alcoholic beverages on the menu.
Eventually the color of the sky warns me it’s my cue to leave, a bright and vibrant orange. I already spent too much time and too much money on this bar. And I wasn’t even supposed to be in this country.
I’m only in Greece to cover for a colleague that allegedly got sick – internally the talk at the office is that he was caught cheating on his wife and had to bail work for a couple days, and somehow I’m the one being punished.
I already know the odds of running into him. They’re high, okay, they always seem to be pretty high.
Still, I cross the street. I take my time doing it, too. Look at both sides multiple times. at the front of the hotel I even took a few pics of the previously mentioned beautiful orange sky.
And yet,
“It’s been a while…” My voice is soft, as I’m trying to be polite. I go as far as nodding when I enter the elevator at the exact time as he does.
Of course the timing would be perfect. If I haven't taken the pictures. Or if I drank less. But I’m starting to believe it wouldn’t have mattered. If not today we were bound to meet again.
“I wonder whose fault is that.” He uses a humorous tone, even raises an eyebrow, smirking, but I can see right through him, he’s not joking. It is my fault. He’s wearing Manchester City’s travel hoodie and joggers, looking so out of place since he’s by himself. I decided against making a joke about that. Maybe another time. Something about asking him if he’s lost from the herd. Or something. Instead, I’m even funnier:
“I miss you too!” I answer with the same tone, maybe a notch higher, trying to actually tell a joke. I consider nudging him with my elbow, to get the bit going, but as soon as I say that the smirk fades off his face and he looks serious at me.
And then his face turns to the elevator door. I watch as he sighs. When our eyes meet again the soft smile is back on his face.
It’s my floor and as I walk out he says:
“Have a good night, Isa.”
I nod. There’s words stuck on my throat and it’s only when the elevator’s door closes again that I manage to say back:
“You too, Rúben.”
A week later, back in Manchester, laying in my own bed, I can’t sleep. I’m still thinking about that encounter, having been thinking about it everyday for the past week. I have to fix this, clear the air. We’re going to meet again and again.
So, against my better judgment, (and to be fair, so long after what I thought I could hold) I text him.
Me: you too
That's good, right? He’ll get it…
Do not text him, girl!!: que?
He texts back immediately. Wasn't expecting that but okay.
Me: hae a good night! have i forgot to say it last time we met
Do not text him, girl!!: isa are you drunk?
I hesitate. Man, that only happened one time! Is it better or worse if I tell him I’m drunk? I mean, I’m kind of sleepy. Maybe I should say yes and go all out ‘I miss kissing you, Rúben’ and shit like that.
No. No, that’s not what I texted him. I only look like I’m drunk texting because he makes me nervous, and the idea is to stop being nervous around him.
Me: what? no! i really just wanted to say have a good night so you know that we’re cool
Rúben: right
Me: we’ll be seeing a lot of each other, and i feel like we didn’t discuss this part the part that you know we’re cool
He takes a while to answer, I’m biting my nails staring directly at the bright white light of the phone. The memory of my brother telling me I’ll be single forever rings in my mind, to be fair he was 14 at the time I had just gotten my first bra. But it is true, and that’s why. I ruin it every time I try.
More minutes pass and he still doesn't answer. My mind goes somewhere else. The actual last conversations we had.
With me saying “I don’t think we can be friends.”, and he saying “Well, that’s not what I’m trying to be.”
“Okay, well, that's worse, Rúben. You get that, right?” I had my hands covering my face as I tried to find the right words. “I just got here, I can't be the reporter that sleeps with the football players.”
“But you…” He held himself back, but I heard it in my mind, ‘but you are’. “Don’t you think is too late for that? You’re really having second thoughts now?!” His hands replaced mine, holding my cheeks. He looked deep into my eyes, like he was trying to read my mind.
I cried more that day than I’m proud to admit. I’m crying right now, still looking at the phone. I don’t expect us to go back to how we were, but I can’t deal with panicking every week just at the idea of seeing him. I can’t avoid him, I can't be with him. So I just want us to be cool, you know? I don’t know how to write a text saying that, though.
Rúben: right we’re cool

Olympiakos: 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League Winners
Tumblr media
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Setting off wild celebrations in Athens, Olympiakos won Greece’s first European club title by beating Fiorentina 1-0 with a goal in extra time of the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday.
Ayoub El Kaabi provided the dramatic ending, diving to nudge in a last-gasp goal in the second period of extra time, with fans erupting in celebration after a lengthy wait for a VAR check for offside.
“Praise be to God, we promised our supporters we’d do this today and we did it,” El Kaabi said.
The Morocco striker – who finished as the competition’s top scorer – struck in the 116th minute of the match and dropped to his knees as he waited to see if the goal would stand after he had met a cross from Santiago Hezze.
The goal decided a game that had looked destined for a penalty shootout following an energetic but largely risk-free encounter at AEK Arena, and condemned Fiorentina and its coach Vincenzo Italiano to a second straight defeat in the final of the Europa Conference League after losing last year to West Ham.
“We created chances and had the opportunity to lift the cup but unfortunately it didn’t happy – I’m sorry,” Italiano said. “In Europe it’s not an easy thing to get this far and lose.”
Olympiakos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar secured a second straight European title after winning the Europa League with Sevilla last season.
“It’s an honor to have made all these people happy, I feel immense joy and happiness to have made people feel this way and I dedicate it to them,” Mendilibar said.
“We have achieved something that our club has never achieved before. We will celebrate it and celebrate it the way we should. Then we will start working on what comes next.” Tens of thousands of Olympiakos fans joined boisterous celebrations across the Greek capital after attending outdoor viewing parties. Youths held up lit flares in the port city of Piraeus, near Athens, where the team is based.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described Olympiakos as “a true legend,” adding in an online post: “Olympiakos has won the Europa Conference League and made history! A sensational night for the club itself, but also for Greek football as a whole.”
The third-tier European club competition took place amid a massive security operation, with some 5,000 police officers forming concentric cordons around a northern area of the capital – amid Europe-wide security concerns this summer for major sporting events including the Paris Olympics and European soccer championship in Germany.
The final was briefly marred by scuffles between Fiorentina fans inside the stadium and riot police next to them.
Although the visitors dominated the early stages of the final, Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano kept his team in the game with two impressive fingertip saves to block on-target shots from Daniel Podence in the fourth minute and Stevan Jovetic in the sixth minute of extra time.
El Kaabi, who scored a total of 11 goals in the competition, had been largely sidelined in the match by Fiorentina’s unyielding four-man defense.
Olympiakos players celebrated with 15,000 fans after the game, some holding their young children as golden confetti was fired into the air around the awards podium.
“It’s the best emotion I’ve felt so far in my career,” defender Panagiotis Retsos said. “I’ve had a lot of ups-and-downs but I’m very, very happy to be here.”
