I've been wondering on and off recently, is it possible that Manuela Zinsberger is suffering with the goalkeeping version of "the yips" or, to use a less sporting specific term, paralysis-by-analysis?

Which led me to do some more research into it that I thought I'd share below the cut.

Because people sometimes get heated on the topic of Zinsberger, this isn't a piece explaining why fans can't be frustrated at her performances, just some thoughts and research sharing based on observations.

"The yips" and paralysis-by-analysis

"The yips" is a term perhaps more commonly known for being used in golf where it refers to involuntary muscle spasms that can occur and result in athletes lose control of their hands or wrists. It was previously considered to just be a mental health difficulty, but now there's some evidence for it being a neurological-muscular condition for some people, worsened by anxiety, which is a type of focal dystonia. So the term is, slightly confusingly, used to refer to both things. There are other related conditions in other sports. Gymnastics has the "twisties", archery has "target panic", and terms like "choking" and the more general "mental block" are used for other sports.

Paralysis-by-analysis is a more general term, describing an individual or group process where overanalysing or overthinking a situation causes forward motion or decision-making to become "paralysed", resulting in no solution or course of action being decided upon within a natural time frame.

Research into paralysis-by-analysis and some things like "the yips" tend to find that those suffering from the phenomena become focused on performance based elements which should be things they do automatically. The pre-frontal cortex over-monitors a skill that normally runs on autopilot, the motor system locks for a moment, and the athlete either stays rooted or makes a visibly late move.

What does this look like in goalkeeping as opposed to age- or injury-related declined?

In some situations, you're not going to be able to tell the difference, but there are things which can suggest one is more likely than the other, or which are indicative of one over the other.

Age-related decline is more often seen as a slow decline in particular parts of form and ability, with the mental game often still being sharp and correct, but the physical capabilities falling short. Injury-related could also be a slow decline, especially if chronic pain becomes involved. Their mental game is still sharp, but their body is not as capable as it was when they were younger. As goalkeepers tend to hit their prime later and continue playing for longer, age-related decline in many situations (without significant injury) wouldn't be expected until a bit older than their outfield peers, sometimes as late as mid-thirties.

Paralysis-by-analysis or a goalkeeper version of "the yips", on the other hand, would be far more likely to present as hesitancy in making decisions, a reduction in communication, second-guessing actions leading to stuttering movement, either making decisions too late and causing themselves problems or conversely almost rashly charging out to try and force through the indecision. But the goalkeeper would still retain their physical capabilities, though they would be inconsistently applied.

For example, let's say there's a high claim action required in the box with an incoming cross. Age-related or injury-related decline would look more like a keeper spotting the danger in time, tracking the trajectory of the high ball correctly and running into position, but despite their visible effort consistently not being fast enough to get there or strong enough to jump high enough to receive the ball.

"The yips" equivalent, on the other hand, would more see the goalkeeper hesitating or second-guessing, taking a step forward, pausing, then either committing but now too late so there's a scramble, or getting stuck with indecision and rooted to the spot. Communication will also drop off in many cases because the keeper's internal monologue is filled with "don't mess this up, don't screw up again" on some form of repeat, reducing mental capacity for external communication.

There have been other goalkeepers who have experienced similar things. Liverpool's Simon Mignolet spoke quite openly about his experience of the goalkeeper yips and the impact it had on him, Joe Hart suffered even more so at both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs with a number of high-profile mistakes, and David de Gea's troubles at Manchester United led to numerous discussions about his crisis of confidence. So it's a known phenomenon in goalkeeping. Goalkeeping is a position that has unique psychological and mental wellbeing challenges; unfortunately it's also a position in a sport that isn't always the most forward thinking and understanding about mental health in general.

And Manu Zinsberger?

I don't watch all of Arsenal's games, but I have seen a fair few and I've also watched Zinsberger in goal for Austria a few times this year. Firstly, Zinsberger is only 29 so is unlikely based on age alone to be in age-related decline of form for a goalkeeper. She hasn't suffered a notable injury that has been made publicly available, to my knowledge, recently either.

Watching her in games, she is certainly still physically capable of explosive run-outs, high claims, and reaches reasonable vertical height when she does jump or dive. In goal for Austria, she has made some genuinely impressive reflex shot-stopping saves that show her reflexes on autopilot do still work quickly. All of which suggest the physical ability is still there and is not in age- or injury-related decline. At the same time, there are also instances of her demonstrating the application of goalkeeper skills correctly, like making herself big in the right way, recognising that a charge-down or a run-out is needed, correct positioning, reading danger and calling her team-mates attention to unmarked threats. So that is there, too.

But it's all incredibly inconsistently applied and very often delayed due to moments of visible hesitancy and stuttering.

Her micro-decisions often let her down and she has become well-known for becoming rooted on the spot, almost being a perfect visual representation of paralysis-by-analysis. But those moments are also intermingled with moments of almost recklessness; in the recent Brighton game she charged out a few times to make clearances and didn't seem more confident necessarily for doing so. Almost as though the efforts to make those decisions was an attempt to override the mental blocks that had led to failures in earlier.

It also seems that her communication has dropped off, based on how teammates are reacting to her at times on the pitch and watching how she seems to speak less on the field, and this could fit with the earlier example of internal narrative being so overwhelming it leaves little space for and disrupts external communication.

In addition, Zinsberger has undergone some significant personal and family events in the past year or so, which can add to emotional and mental load and can worse phenomena like "the yips". Clearly, based on how upset she has been seen after matches, the current situation is weighing heavily on her.

I don't know for certain what's going on with Zinsberger, but there are observable indications that some kind of mental block is at play rather than physical ability decline. And mental blocks like these can be difficult to overcome. Not impossible, but difficult.

Some final thoughts

As I said at the top, this isn't an attempt to argue that Arsenal fans can't be frustrated by Zinsberger's performances. Just because there might be a reason or contributing factors (and this theorising may or may not be right) doesn't make the losses or goals conceded any easier to take. You'd like to think that it would be a given that verbally abusing her directly is completely out of order, but with a small proportion of football fans, that isn't the case. But frustrations and discussions about her performance and criticism (without going and dragging her into it directly) are all understandable.

It also doesn't mean Zinsberger should stay at Arsenal. In fact, many of the male goalkeepers who suffered with the yips or a mental block only found relief and recovery once they left and started afresh somewhere else.

That could be the best next step for Zinsberger, as difficult as it would be to leave, for a number of reasons:

The tactical role required by Arsenal seems to amplify the stressors - For example, the sweeper-keeper demands when hesitation is a key issue can lead to problems, if a team is playing a higher line then a goalkeeper is going to be more often put in 1 v 1 situations where micro-decisions have to made quickly and confidently.

Public narrative has turned toxic - A proportion of any fanbase in football is always awful. (in any fandom of anything, actually. It's referred to as the 1% Theory in fandoms. I suspect it's higher than 1% in football fanspaces, perhaps 2-5%, but that's another topic). Arsenal have a large fanbase so that proportion for them equates to a larger raw number of people. Some of the comments Zinsberger has had under posts are awful, as are some of the things shouted at her. It is not easy to shrug that off.

Alternative keeper is in form, so a bench spell becomes prolonged rather than restorative - A temporary benching can be beneficial for mental block, a long term one only worsens it and DVD is currently Arsenal's set first choice keeper.

Sometimes a fresh start can allow a player to step into a new type of support and focus on that from the beginning. The big problem is that a lot of women's teams lack resources that men's teams have and may not have the facilities and quality or availability of support that is needed. It is an area that women's teams will need to keep working towards as the sport grows.

However, if Arsenal wants Zinsberger to stay, I think they really need to look into alternative approaches or trying something different, because whatever is happening at the moment does not seem to be working. Continuing as things currently are it isn't good for anyone, including Zinsberger.

Alphonse's Build

My second generation Metal Sonic is mostly meant to be a medical robot, that's his priority programing. But he has the ability to ignore or even rewrite his programming as he wants. His code is more like a guideline to him, a set of morals that he tries to follow. As he's gotten older though and more bold, his previous priority of fleeing battles is no longer something he follows despite the fact he is NOT a battle bot. But I digress...

His current body is built to mimic an organic's in placement of parts save for his engine. But with the foxes (Tails & Nine) working on his replacement, there is no promise of what will or wont remain. The following is a list of what each of his parts contain and/or how they function.

Fingers– Al's "claws" are actually his surgical tools. Built in scalpels (all four fingers on each hand) and syringes (both thumbs) that he has learned to weaponize when threatened. They automatically sanitize when retracted, his fingers generate a high electrical charge to burn away any microbes. This is the same reason why he can electrify his claws.

Hands– His palms carry defibrillators that can also be over charged to fire off shots of electricity similar to the original Metal Sonic's cannon but he can use it in both hands and it's a smaller more ball like projectile. Thus he can fire it in quick succession if needed.

Wrists– His wrists contain spools of surgical thread (left wrist) and various sterile sewing needles (right wrist) for stitches.

Left Forearm- Contains a rolled up surgical gown, surgical masks, and gloves. These are for when a surgery is invasive and he needs an assistant. These items are given to the one selected to assist so they can be dressed and ready for the procedure.

Right Forearm- Contains common first aid. Bandages of various size, burn salve, tweezers, gauze, sterilizing wipes, medical spray (for rashes, sunburn, and bug bites), and individually wrapped brightly colored gummy goldfish. The Solarian equal to getting lollipops at the doctor's office.

Left Upper Arm- Contains several rotating racks of vials containing various antimicrobial treatments and vaccinations.

Right Upper Arm- Contains several rotating racks of various containers holding many magical components (unicorn blood, healing water, powdered dragon scales, etc) for harder to treat conditions or injuries.

Shoulders- The only armored place on his current body. Contain the cockatrice venom containers used as fuel for his engine, a little goes a LONG way. Highly flammable if broken or leaking, hence the thicker metal here.

Torso- Contains his engine, power core, and two gas canisters. Engine is built extremely slim, much more advanced than any Eggtech in most worlds. It is silenced and thus makes a quiet "vvvvv" sound when active, extremely fast as a Metal Sonic should be. Power core is locked in place by a vacuum seal, cannot be removed unless Al is shut down or he chooses to disable the seal. The canisters are hooked up to his life support systems. One contains oxygen, the other a sleeping gas.

Back- Also contains engine but more important are his "spines". Hardened sheets of retractable metal that surprisingly have a razor edge when extended. Used most often in his own homing attacks in combat.

Neck- Contains tubing and wires for life support systems.

Quills- Hide the mask for the medical gases and life support. Can be opened in back to access Al's computer components. Easily damaged.

Head- Contains all hardware and software needed for Al to function. Despite any damages, nothing ever seems to effect his functionality. Eyes capable of scanning surroundings and patients in several different ways. X-Ray, Bioscan, heat signature, and night vision can all be linked together to scan anything even through walls and whole buildings in order to find trapped civilians.

The minute you walked out of the restroom, you took a deep breath, then hurried down the hallway as fast as your heeled feet could carry you.
