UEFA Champions League Power Rankings: Liverpool, PSG on the up as Chelsea slide down after loss to Juventus
Tumblr media
It has been a dramatic week in the Champions League and beyond with shock results and clashes between some of the continent's biggest teams. Now with a second of the group stage games in the can we are now at the stage where we can start to make a realistic assessment of who is likely to be in the business end of the competition.  As such, don't consider these power rankings to be necessarily indicative of the best teams in Europe but instead of those most likely to reach the business end of the Champions League. In other words, sorry AC Milan. Here's how the teams are shaping up ahead of the international break:
The top tier: Title or bust
These teams should be disappointed with anything less than a semi final berth and frankly even that might not be enough, such is their talent profile. 1. Manchester City (--) Their brutal week of away games against Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool may have yielded only four points and yet their status as Europe's top team has probably been enhanced. In each match there were spells where their opponents simply could not live with Pep Guardiola's side even if the familiar issues of chance conversion raised their ugly head. Still across those three matches City created shots worth 5.49 expected goals (xG) and allowed three star-studded attacks just 1.76 xG. That bodes well for the business end of the season. 2. Liverpool (+1) Mohamed Salah might be Europe's form forward right now with Sadio Mane not far behind him. Both look back to their best with a stable foundation behind them. If there is a scintilla of doubt over Jurgen Klopp's side at the moment it is that they can be guilty of letting teams back into games they seem to be dominating; even though City upped their game dramatically on Sunday at Anfield the first 15 minutes felt rather similar to games against AC Milan and Brentford where Liverpool let a moment slip by. 3. Bayern Munich (+1) A 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt spoiled their impressive start to the season but the sort of robust treatment the visitors meted out on Bayern probably is not a practical response to dealing with this all conquering attack. On Sunday a combination of loose final passes and excellent goalkeeping from Kevin Trapp denied them but the eight goals of evidence they have from the Champions League suggests those sorts of days will be few and far between.
Serious contenders: If things go right, why not us?
It certainly is not beyond the realm of imagination that any of these teams could be lifting the European Cup in Istanbul come May, though it may require a few fortunate breaks for the tournament to go their way. 4. Paris Saint-Germain (+1) PSG's simultaneously underwhelming and impressive season continued in that fashion last week as moments of magic from Lionel Messi and Idrissa Gueye took them to a win over a Manchester City side to whom they gave plenty of routes back into the match. Then they failed to muster a single shot on target in the second half of a 2-0 loss to Rennes. Their defense looks like it needs a lot more time to coalesce whilst we are still yet to see all the big three click at the same time. Craving even more coverage of the world's game? Listen below and follow ¡Qué Golazo! A Daily CBS Soccer Podcast where we take you beyond the pitch and around the globe for commentary, previews, recaps and more. 5. Chelsea (-3) While a 3-1 win over Southampton eased any murmurs of disaffection there are still real causes for concern at Chelsea, who struggled to create any meaningful chances when all square with Manchester City and Juventus. Their defense is giving up good chances far more frequently than it did last season and that has so far not been balanced out by greater attacking impetus at the other end.
Dark horses: Unlikely contenders, but contenders all the same
These teams are unlikely champions, but then so were Chelsea this time a year ago. It may take a change of circumstances like the Blues had when they appointed Thomas Tuchel, perhaps a new signing or the unearthing of a new tactical plan. It's possible, but certainly not probable. 6. Borussia Dortmund (-2) A slightly clunky 1-0 win over Sporting and a 2-1 victory against Augsburg might not normally be such cause for optimism at Dortmund but the fact that they were earned without Erling Haaland (and in the former case Julian Brandt) is encouraging for Marco Rose. There are few downsides to having one of the best young strikers in the world but Dortmund had on occasion been looking a little too reliant on Haaland, not least because his understudy Donyell Malen had started slowly in the Bundesliga. A goal in the Champions League offers hope that that might be about to change. 7. Ajax (+2) No team has a higher xG through two group stage games than Ajax, who pummeled both Sporting and Besiktas into submission. Erik ten Hag's side seems to have options all over the pitch in what looks to be a relatively orthodox 4-3-3 executed to aplomb with players who might not be the most heralded of stars but click excellently together. In particular Steven Berghuis' late runs from midfield could well pose a problem deep into this tournament. 8. Sevilla (-1) It has been a rather underwhelming week for Julen Lopetegui's side but crucially they came back from Wolfsburg with a point after Ivan Rakitic's late goal. Their 1-0 defeat against Granada was something of a forgivable result, they only allowed three shots for their opponents though they themselves went nearly an hour between shots that drew a save from Luis Maximiano. 9. Real Madrid (-3) A horrendous week for Carlo Ancelotti saw his side follow one of the greatest upsets in Champions League group stage history -- their 2-1 defeat at home to Sheriff -- with a loss by the same scoreline against Espanyol. On both occasions they created the chances to win the game but they are perhaps overly reliant on the scoring form of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, who account for over half of Madrid's shots on target in the Champions League and La Liga. 10. Atletico Madrid (+1) Though wins over AC Milan and Barcelona have them sitting pretty in both major competitions it is worth reflecting on how much of the first of those games passed by before Atleti really looked like exploiting their man advantage following Franck Kessie's red card. In Europe in particular it feels like Diego Simeone's side need an awful lot of time, fortune and high grade attacking talent on the pitch just to test their opponents. 11. Manchester United (-1) Though Cristiano Ronaldo's late goal against Villarreal kept them firmly in the mix in Group F each successive game seems to be proving the limitations of United's hero ball approach. Against Everton they looked devoid of ideas to carve open two banks of four and for a team whose best attacking moments seem to come on the counter they have precious little idea how to stop other teams doing it to them. If they do not develop a plan soon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be out of a job and there are no guarantees the team will get out of their group.
Knockout stage contenders
You will note here that there are slightly more contenders for the knockout stages than there will be teams in there. Welcome to the wonder of those teams battling for second spot in the groups. There will always be someone disappointed. 12. Juventus (+1) 13. Inter Milan (-1) One might make a convincing case that Inter, still unbeaten in Serie A and averaging three goals per game, are the better of the two Italian sides in 12th and 13th but after picking up just a point from their first two group fixtures they are firmly behind the eight ball in the Champions League and can ill afford further slip ups against Sheriff in the coming matches. Meanwhile Juventus' resilient victory over Chelsea was perhaps not the sort they could repeat on a regular basis. But then they won't need to for a while yet with favorable meetings with Zenit Saint Petersburg and Malmo to come. It probably will not be long until Massimiliano Allegri's side reach the last 16. 14. Benfica (+3) 15. Red Bull Salzburg (+4) 16. Atalanta (-1) 17. Wolfsburg (-3) 18. Villarreal (--) 19. Sheriff Tiraspol (+7) Their 2-1 win over Real Madrid was hardly vintage football from Sheriff, who gave up all the chances their opponents needed and more after their opening goal in the Santiago Bernabeu, but there were moments that showed why the Moldovan champions have proven to be such a tough out for seasoned European sides. In the 24 minutes before their opener Yuriy Vernydub's side kept the 13-time European champions to four shots worth a combined 0.24 xG. This is a defense that can hold out the best of them, though perhaps not under the pressure that Madrid put on them. 20. Barcelona (-4)
In the mix
A few fortunate breaks and they may find themselves extending their Champions League involvement beyond Christmas. Don't bet on it though. 21. Porto (+1) 22. Club Brugge (+9) 23. Shakhtar Donetsk (+4) 24. Dynamo Kyiv (+1) 25. Zenit Saint Petersburg (+4) 26. RB Leipzig (-7) Jesse Marsch's task of pipping one of Manchester City and PSG to the post in Group A seemed herculean from the outset. It might just be beyond them after their loss to Club Brugge. Their league form is beginning to turn a corner but one cannot help but feel that their best prospect now is to play catch up with the Belgians and hope they can steal in to earn a Europa League spot. Considering they would then rank among the favorites for that competition it may not be the worst of consolations. 27. Young Boys (+3) 28. AC Milan (-7) 29. Sporting (-3) 30. Besiktas (-3) When the draw was made Group C seemed to offer the most intrigue with no obvious front runner. Everyone seemed to be in the mix for qualifying but now it would appear that Ajax and Borussia Dortmund are streaking ahead. For Sporting or Besiktas to have any real chance of reaching the top two they will have to take four points from their back to back fixtures over the coming weeks.
Slipping out of Europe
There are no bad teams in the Champions League but these will do well to extend their involvement in European football beyond Christmas. 31. Lille (-3) 32. Malmo (--) Source link Read the full article

Dreams on the contrivance? The stats
Atletico Madrid have frequently progressed in opposition to German opposition within the knockout stages of the Champions League (vs Leverkusen in 2014-15 and 2016-17; vs Bayern Munich in 2015-16). who do you wish to draw against in CL and what do you expect?
for Juve: idealistically I would want Leicester (that being said they shouldn’t be underestimated) but we all know who’s going to end up with that *cough* r*al *cough* whatever happens i hope Leicester do get their arses kicked punishment for what they did.
i’d like to steer away from bayern and barca and real rn but if we do draw them we need to be ready. i don’t want a repeat of last season. I think the team this year has quite a bit of depth but Allegri still hasn’t seemed to have found a real permanent starting 11 or system yet (unless he’s just trying to give everyone some game time) so it’ll be interesting to see what the team choices will be coming up. I do want Juve to play Atleti at some point mainly because i need this pau and grizi ship to sail 🙈 but also looking at a footballing perspective; these two teams have similar styles to it will be interesting to see the tactical battle. imo opinion Juve does have a slight edge on Atleti in the attacking department but as seen in the last few games we have properly pounced on our opportunities.
i would like to see El Classico happen just for the drama and seeing madridstas and cules going off at each other on here (it’s nice being a spectator in all that) but barca v Bayern/Dortumund would also be a big match up too.
actually would it be too much to ask to have both el classico and bayern vs dortmund.
Anyway back to juve. given the squad and how we have performed recently we have a good chance at making it to the semis but like anything can happen on the day. and if we draw one of the bigger clubs (especially barca) then it might play psychologically on the players minds and that’s when the bottling begins. we have the quality and strength to make it to the final so hopefully that happens. i guess i can give proper predictions when the draws are announced.

New on Sports Illustrated: Tyler Adams Vaults to Top of List of Most Significant Goals Scored By USMNT Abroad
Adams sent RB Leipzig to the Champions League semifinals and raced to the top of a short list of contenders for the most significant goals scored by Americans in Europe.
Tyler Adams doesn’t score often. But when he does, it’s usually significant.
Before Thursday, the 21-year-old midfielder had scored just seven times since turning pro at 16 with New York Red Bulls II. But one of those was an equalizer for the Red Bulls' senior side in a Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal. Two others came in a 3-3 draw against rival D.C. United. And then there was the game-winner in the U.S. national team’s 1-0 friendly win over Mexico in September 2018.
But none of them were as big as Thursday’s goal in Lisbon, Portugal. In fact, a pretty airtight case could be made that no goal ever scored by a U.S. international in club competition was as seismic as Adams’s deflected strike in the 88th minute of RB Leipzig’s 2-1 defeat of Atlético Madrid. The victory lifted RBL, which was founded just 11 years ago, into the UEFA Champions League semifinals for the first time. And it lifted Adams into the small pantheon of American men who’ve made their mark on the scoresheet at the club game’s highest level.
No U.S. player had ever scored in the Champions League quarterfinal or later. And Adams could become just the second to play in the semis when RB Leipzig meets Paris Saint-Germain at Benfica’s Estádio da Luz on Aug. 18. Recently retired winger DaMarcus Beasley appeared for PSV Eindhoven in the 2005 final four against AC Milan, losing on away goals. (Jovan Kirovski also played for Borussia Dortmund in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup/Club World Cup final).
“We’re really really excited. We know that Paris is obviously a great team,” Adams said following Thursday’s triumph. “Now it’s about recovering in the right way, getting our mentality right and preparing a game plan. But we’re confident in our abilities, like you saw today, so we’re going to bring what we’re capable of."
Leipzig was the better team through much of Thursday’s quarterfinal, but Atleti has vast experience at this stage of European competition and leveled the score at 1-1 with a João Félix penalty in the 71st minute. Adams entered the match as a substitute a minute later. It marked just his second Champions League appearance.
“It’s so exciting for me, I think, to come in and play in a Champions League game,” he said. “You know for the first six months, when we started the Champions League campaign, I was injured. So it’s a good feeling to get out there, obviously fully fit, and show what I’m capable of.”
Adams was a regular for Leipzig down the stretch of the restarted Bundesliga season as the club finished third, thus qualifying for the 2020-21 Champions League. Then came a three-week break, and finally Adams’s chance to contribute in this season’s competition.
Leipzig had eased past Tottenham Hotspur in the home-and-away round of 16, but Thursday’s quarterfinal would be just one game. And as extra time approached, the quarterfinal turned. RBL’s Marcel Sabitzer hit a stunning, curling, one-time pass from the center circle that split four Atleti defenders and freed left back Angeliño in the left channel. Instead of crossing it toward the two Leipzig players running into the penalty area, the Spaniard smartly cut it back into an open space near the penalty arc. Adams was there and alone. He took a touch, then ripped a shot that was headed toward the left post when it deflected off defender Stefan Savic. Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak had no chance.
“It's a deflection, but it counts the same as a regular one so i’ll take it,” Adams said. “For the first 70 minutes, it was a close game. So when I came on, obviously I wanted to bring energy and help the team in any way possible. Getting your first goal [for Leipzig] is a little bit unexpected for me. I’m not a typical goal scorer, but I’m happy I could help the team.”
Help the team, and make history. Adams’s goal may be the biggest by an American abroad, but it’s not the only important one. Here are a few of the more notable entries on that limited list:
John Harkes (Sheffield Wednesday vs. Derby County, 1990)
youtube
An American scored England’s goal of the season, and it came off the foot of one of U.S. soccer’s true European pioneers. That’s how you make an impression. Harkes also scored for Wednesday in a losing effort in the 1993 Football League Cup final.
DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven vs. Rosenborg, 2004)
youtube
There may not have been a PSV run to the Champions League semis if not for Beasley's goal in the fourth game of the group stage against Rosenborg. His 10th-minute finish, which required him to settle a long pass then round the Rosenborg goalkeeper, lifted PSV to a 1-0 win and the three points it needed to finish second–by a point–in its group (1:38 in the clip above).
Jay DeMerit (Watford vs. Leeds United, 2006)
youtube
DeMerit’s incredible rags to riches story was punctuated in the 25th minute of the Football League Championship promotion final against Leeds, as he headed home the opening (and winning) goal from close range. Watford won, 3-0, and DeMerit was bound for the Premier League.
Maurice Edu (Rangers vs. Celtic, 2010)
youtube
The midfielder settled a critical Old Firm matchup in the final minute of stoppage time as he latched onto a rebound and lifted Rangers to a critical 1-0 win. There was pandemonium at Ibrox, and Rangers was on its way to a second straight league title.
Clint Dempsey (Fulham vs. Juventus, 2010)
youtube
Fulham may have been a Premier League team from London, but it was a minnow compared to mighty Juventus. The disparity was evident for much of their 2009-10 UEFA Europa League round-of-16 series, which Juve led, 4-1 on aggregate, after two minutes of the second leg at Craven Cottage. Then Bobby Zamora scored for Fulham and Zoltán Gera scored twice, setting the stage for Dempsey to score the most scintillating Yanks abroad goal, even if it’s no longer the most important. His audacious chip toward the far post set Fulham on a path toward the final and will always be a massive part of Deuce’s legend.
Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund vs. Benfica, 2017)
youtube
Dortmund wound up winning the Champions League round-of-16 series against Benfica, 4-1, on aggregate, but it was Pulisic’s deft chip in the 59th minute of the second leg that broke a deadlock. The goal did more than send BVB on its way—it confirmed the 18-year-old Pulisic as a rising star.
Christian Pulisic (Chelsea vs. Arsenal, 2020)
youtube
Pulisic became the first American man to score in the FA Cup final, one of soccer’s grandest stages, on Aug. 1. Chelsea would end up losing, but the moment when Pulisic gave the Blues an early lead with a slick dribble and finish certainly stands out among goals scored by U.S. players abroad.

Prediksi bola Monaco vs Atletico Madrid betting skor bola 18 September 2018

HEAD TO HEAD
Ini akan menjadi pertemuan pertama antara AS Monaco dan Atletico Madrid dalam kompetisi apa pun.

Champions League 2017-18: The moments of this season
Champions League 2017-18: The moments of this season
Champions League 2017-18: The moments of this season
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in this season’s Champions League going into Saturday’s final with Liverpool
With only one game of this season’s competition remaining, BBC Sport gathered the thoughts of several European football journalists on the moments that shaped the 2017-18 Champions League.
Here’s what BBC Euro Leagues Football Show regulars Mina Rzouki, James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Raphael Honigstein, European football writer Andy Brassell, BBC World Service’s John Bennett and BBC Sport online journalist Emlyn Begley thought about the most memorable goals, performances, disasters and comedy moments.
Best moment
Kostas Manolas’ 82nd-minute winner gave Roma a 3-0 win over Barcelona, and a semi-final spot on away goals
JB: The Kostas Manolas header which completed one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history. Roma were out of this world against Barcelona on that Tuesday night back in April but time was running out and it looked as though Barcelona would squeeze through to the semi-finals, until Manolas flicked on Cengiz Under’s cross. Cue scenes at the Stadio Olimpico that ‘I Giallorossi’ fans will never forget. Football was invented for moments like that.
AB: You could pick any one of a handful from Tottenham’s campaign, a huge leap forward from last season, but Christian Eriksen’s equaliser away at Juventus stands out. Spurs had no easy tasks in this season’s Champions League and were equal to most of them, but Eriksen’s goal capped a stunning comeback and underlined the fact that Mauricio Pochettino and company had one of the competition’s most consistent teams of recent years sweating.
RH: Mo Salah’s goal in the second leg against Manchester City. Just when Liverpool were really beginning to crumble and needed something to happen, he comes up with the most nonchalant, cool, almost effortless finish you’ll see to settle a tie.
EB: Cristiano Ronaldo’s bicycle kick for Real Madrid at Juventus in the quarter-final first leg. The greatest goalscorer the Champions League has ever known has become more of a poacher as he gets older – but he showed he still has the ability to score wonder goals with this strike. The standing ovation he got from the Juve fans had shades of the original Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Manchester United.
JL: PSG left-back Layvin Kurzawa – a very average football player – scoring a hat-trick against Anderlecht. Imagine all the great defenders who have played in the Champions League and he’s the first one to score a hat-trick. That’s football taking the mick.
JH: James Pallotta, the Roma president, dropping into the Piazza del Popolo fountain after Roma completed the most incredible comeback we’ve seen in this tournament… since Barcelona beat Paris St-Germain. It felt like a defining moment in a great season for Roma.
Outstanding performance
Cristiano Ronaldo held his nerve to knock Juventus out following the Italian side’s quarter-final fightback
RH: There were a few outstanding team performances, like Sevilla’s win at Old Trafford. For a player, it’s a bit easier as you can name him every year – Cristiano Ronaldo scoring 15 goals – and the 90th-minute penalty against Juventus. It was a game where nothing had gone for Real Madrid and the Bernabeu were baying for blood. The way he scored, the complete lack of any nervousness, was hugely impressive. He is a real role model for anyone who wants to see how to deal with pressure.
JL: The second leg between Roma and Barcelona. I think there is no other choice. It was such an incredible game. The Romantada, karma – hitting Barcelona after what they did to PSG last season. It was an incredible performance and deserved win.
JB: Sorry Manchester United fans but Wissam Ben Yedder’s cameo at Old Trafford stands out for me. He came on in the 72nd minute, gave Sevilla the lead in the 74th minute and then a wonderful, nerveless finish made history for Sevilla in the 78th minute. The definition of an impact sub. In fact he made such a big impact that two days later Didier Deschamps gave him his first international call-up.
AB: Roma 3-0 Chelsea. Many will point to the ‘Romantada’, the Giallorossi’s second-leg fightback against Barcelona, but it was victory over the English champions that set the tone for Eusebio di Francesco’s team in the Champions League. Their key players were well rested – thanks to the squad improvements made by new sporting director Monchi – and it showed as they tore into Chelsea with desire and attacking intent.
EB: Mohamed Salah’s masterclass in the the first leg of Liverpool’s semi-final against his old club Roma. The winger scored two excellent goals – and assisted two more – to beat one of the world’s top goalkeepers in Alisson Becker. All this in arguably the biggest game of his career – against a team who should have known how to contain him better than anyone. As if to emphasise just how good he’d been, the Reds looked like they would add to their 5-0 lead when he came off – and it ended 5-2.
MR: Tottenham going to Turin, playing in that stadium where so many people have struggled and scoring all those goals against Juventus in the first leg was interesting. Watching that, I thought Spurs have announced themselves on the biggest stage.
Breakthrough player
Mohamed Salah has scored 10 goals in the Champions League this season, plus another in qualifying
MR: Mo Salah. It has to be a Liverpool player. This is a guy I famously didn’t think would do everything he managed to do. Watching him at Roma, he was a good player but nothing like what’s he’s proved to be at Liverpool. He’s a different player – he has the spark, quality, pace and understanding with his team-mates. He’s proved to be the difference maker. When you look at what he was for Roma, that match against Real Madrid and now, he’s fantastic.
JB: We knew about him here in the UK but now Scotland’s Andrew Robertson has made the breakthrough on the European stage. The Liverpool defender was outstanding in the quarter-final against Manchester City and in the semi-final versus Roma. From relegation with Hull City to a Champions League final with Liverpool in 12 months. An inspired signing by Jurgen Klopp.
RH: You have to go with a Liverpool player. Sadio Mane has been a revelation. He’d never played in the Champions League proper before, he’d always failed in the qualifiers with Salzburg. The impact he’s had, with a hat-trick against Porto and scoring in all the big games, he gets overlooked a little bit with the industry of Firmino and brilliance of Salah but he’s had a fantastic season.
AB: Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder. Entering this year’s Champions League with only a smattering of European experience, he showed what a canny finisher he is – only Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s phenomenal front three have scored more than him in the competition, with his eight goals including a double to sink Manchester United at Old Trafford.
JL: Roma keeper Alisson Becker. We have said on the pod many times how great he’s been this season. Despite the semi-final against Liverpool, where he was a bit let down by his defence, he’s been incredible. He’s been the best goalkeeper in Europe.
JH: Andy Robertson has had a great season and it’s an incredible story. He didn’t make the grade at Celtic and was relegated with Hull City. From that to being in the Champions League final is remarkable.
EB: A £34m signing may be an odd selection for breakthrough player – but nobody anticipated a scenario where Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah would outscore Lionel Messi in this season’s Champions League or be a serious contender to break the 10-year Ronaldo-Messi Ballon d’Or duopoly. This is a man who had scored three Champions League goals before this season – and none in a knockout game.
Biggest disappointment
Marco Verratti was sent off as Paris St-Germain went out to Real Madrid
AB: Paris St-Germain’s exit. There’s no shame in losing to Real Madrid, of course, but the manner in which Paris let this slip was hugely deflating after the fanfare surrounding Neymar’s arrival. PSG managed to throw away a promising position in the first leg and rarely looked capable of turning it around at home.
MR: Juventus travelling to the Bernabeu, scoring three goals and walking out empty handed because of that penalty decision. They didn’t do enough to secure their passage into the semi-finals despite an outstanding performance in Spain.
JB: When Real Madrid, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund were drawn together in Group H, we were all expecting box office games and a nerve-wracking finish. In the end, the Germans let us down. Dortmund finished without a win and with only two points from two draws against Apoel Nicosia. Head coach Peter Bosz paid the price when he was sacked in December.
JL: Paris St-Germain. They had Real Madrid on the ropes at the Bernabeu in the first leg – and still managed to bottle it. Unai Emery made poor tactical changes and the team didn’t show up for the second leg in Paris. That was so disappointing.
EB: Barcelona blowing a 4-1 first-leg lead to go out to Roma. It was a great Champions League comeback – but hopes had been high for a team who almost went through the entire La Liga season unbeaten. It also meant for a third season in a row there was no Lionel Messi in the last four. I would have gone for Atletico crashing out in the group stages – but they ended the season winning the Europa League.
JH: Atletico Madrid. Nobody really expected Roma to get out of that group because Atleti and Chelsea were favourites. I do think winning a trophy is better than just coming out of a group and getting knocked out, but it was a bit disappointing. With Diego Costa, they could have been a real force.
RH: Dortmund finishing third in a group behind Spurs and Real Madrid is no crime – but if you look at the results and performances, they were dire. Failing to beat Apoel, I’m still struggling to believe what I saw. The writing was on the wall for Peter Bosz at that point. It’s hard to look at this Dortmund squad and believe how bad they were at times.
Strangest moment
Shakhtar boss wears full Zorro outfit after Man City win
JB: World Snooker champion Mark Williams stole his thunder by turning up to his news conference in just a towel but we can’t forget Paulo Fonseca’s Zorro moment after Shakhtar Donetsk’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in December. Fonseca promised to dress up as Zorro if his team qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and kept his word. He must have been confident because the costume was ready and waiting in his office at full-time. He’s just signed a new deal but expect to see the “masked vigilante” at a Premier League club near you soon. Shakhtar played some excellent football in this season’s Champions League.
EB: Gianluigi Buffon is a passionate guy – but it was surprising to see him lose his cool to such an extreme after Michael Oliver awarded an injury-time penalty to Real Madrid in their quarter-final second leg. Post-match interviews where he said Oliver had a “bag of rubbish for a heart”, was a “beast” and started listing the soft drinks the Englishman should be drinking in the crowd rather than refereeing will live long in the memory.
AB: Atletico Madrid’s Gabi using a four-letter expletive to describe the Europa League after his side were pushed to the brink of group elimination by Azeri minnows Qarabag – only for Diego Simeone and company to go on and win it. The captain was, though, happy enough to poke fun at himself about it after the Lyon final.
JL: Timo Werner coming off for RB Leipzig against Besiktas as he had a headache because of the noise in the stadium. One of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen.
JH: Paulo Fonseca, the Shakhtar manager, dressing up as Zorro when they qualified. He showed he’s a man who always keeps his word as he’d vowed to do that if they got out of the group.
RH: Strangest and most tragic, and funny depending on where your sympathies lie, was Sven Ulreich’s calamitous mistake at the Bernabeu. It’s the kind of goalkeeping howler which will etch itself on to the collective memory of Bayern fans. It was the biggest high-profile mistake I’ve seen in a long time.
MR: Gianluigi Buffon going absolutely crazy after Juventus went out to Real Madrid. He’s a veteran, a legend, an icon, everyone looks to him for his comments and sporting-like behaviour. He’s always been a gentleman so losing his rag was strange. He thought he might go out like Zidane and he did indeed.
