actually as i reread my old horimiya wip i realize that its good, and i like it, and i would probably enjoy working on it more, but unfortunately two things would get in my way in doing so. one, id have to reread horimiya a little bit. and i did not enjoy horimiya enough for that. and two, while i almost managed to hit at it as i wrote, its lacking its thematic center. sometimes im writing something just to have characters interact (re: nico;annabeth) but for the horimiya wip, its narrowly missing its purpose, which is frustrating because thats how i feel about the original horimiya manga. if i were to finish it, id need to restructure it a bit, to really get at the point im trying to make. but since im probably not going to, heres the point right here: sometimes, when you are alone for a long time, you learn to take pride and pleasure in your loneliness. you learn to enjoy self-sufficiency. you learn to recoil from love. you cannot do this, or else you will be alone forever. my final message to the world goodbye.

OK SOMEEEE gripes

im ACTUALLY extremely conflicted on some of the present day stuff and i think its mostly down to the characters

like im very happy with jeff, and i think he's fine as is - brilliant, even, bc hes a genuinely refreshing take imo as opposed to what they could have easily done (i.e unlikable, distant from it all husband). not that he would be CRAZY or unreasonable to resent shauna, but like... its just fucking so much funnier + more interesting to me to see a character kind of just go with it, rather than to have them stew in angst. like i think its more interesting and allows for them to explore different beats than what you'd assume they would if you'd just known the basics of what shauna was up to. imo

similarly i was happy with adam as a character, too, and i think they developed him well enough for who he was and how he functions in this story. im glad he didnt turn out to be javi (if he was, i guess, bc he still could be technically that kinda suck wway more now tbh booo) and whilst there was nooo way he was gonna survive if he was just some guy which he was

theres also guys like kevyn. my jokes aside abt how scary he is im kinda fine with him, and i do actually makes some kinda sense that hes a cop + that he's now so straight-laced. some loser divorced dad. and it'd be a good comparison to natalie, and the lifestyle she lives now and how their paths diverged. however i kind of wish they'd... just let him go? like i wish he'd been at the reunion, and they'dhad that exchanged and then he'd just walked away to his wife and kids and her back to the yellowjackets no return no return no return huh what was that YEHA. my point is. i feel like there's no true resolution between them two thats organic and it just kinda feels weird to keep him around past that. i know they need a cop character for whats happening with shauna now but it just feels kinda ... bizarre to have him playing that role with that creep dude. bc whilst i do prefer limited characters in a show like this and to keep it tight and clean it just feels weird for it to be him and for it to be THAT insular AND, again, for him to keep sticking around when i dont feel like theres anywhere for him to go.... like its kinda DIFFERENT with the other cop dude, bc he isnt pre-established and he does kinda just function moreso as just. a fucking yuckhead fuckhead but instead its just this weird uhhhh. and kevyn is back! um. he will continue serving this purpose and we will never touch on him and natalie again. bc we shouldnt ofc but it also feels weird to have him there without ever mentioning it LOL

who else. fuck. like i am also very conflicted abt tai's wife and son like.... they do just feel a bit like- theyre just there? and i think that DEFINITELY makes some sort of narrative sense with tai, and with her whole deal- she has it all, she has everything but she has nothinnggg but... IDK KINDA SAD MAN. bc its weird i'll go back to this with jeff and callie, but it does make SENSE that the non-yellowjackets characters are always gonna be secondary with the story theyre telling in more ways than them just being secondary characters but with how fucking impossible it is to reconnect with fucking ANYONE after everything they did/went through BUT ITS LIKE... like i said i kinda like jeff and ironically his absolute lack of personality became a personality, whereas with simone&sammy i feel like theyre just kinda... SUPER functioning and that does kinda make me worry because whilst i know a lot of ppl are yelling for tai/van endgame... i dont know it feels weird to write them off fuckin completely which is what i feel like the show might kinda lean into at some point...😭like i want more for them, and from them. and i also sorry i also hate fucking "scary child who sees the supernatural" trope SORRYYYY its so tired to me and so lazy . give this kid some proper fucking development

okay humanstuck thoughts under the cut

i owe a lot of this to @/rhythmic-idealist's kankri/vantasposting bc holy shit theyve got such a big brain (ill link to their individual posts when im on desktop since im using this to keep all my thoughts straight and i agree with most of what they say wholeheartedly)

general status quo stuff:

signless works in an extremely demanding career involving helping others (i'm leaning towards an attorney who works with organizations and does pro bono work), and is also extensively involved in social justice work outside of his job... he is very rarely home

he loves and cares for his children deeply and tries to express it whenever they're face to face, but the couch in his cramped and messy office has seen far too much use over the years for him to have been able to say it enough

his habits of working himself to the point of exhaustion are handily passed down to his kids btw

the kids had to grow up quickly because signless was out of the house so often and so consistently—kankri, who was already pretty high-strung, has to learn to take care of himself and karkat

they grow up near ms firuzeh maryam, who's their pseudoaunt/grandma (she took in a nine year old kavana vantas when she was about twenty), but they just call her ms rosa

they spent a lot of time in the maryam house growing up, with miss rosa's two nieces. porrim is a year older than kankri, while kanaya and karkat are the same age

kankri grows kinda sensitive to people trying to mother him since it rubs against the notion that he's the "adult of the house" and that he can take care of himself and karkat just fine

(and it also kinda underlines the fact that kankri has no idea what he's doing at the best of times)

and ironically enough, kankri becomes overbearing and naggy towards karkat in his own right, which forestalls them becoming close in any brotherly sort of way

they grow up really just... unable to communicate with one another clearly

karkat develops his ornery exterior in response to kankri's constant stream of opinions and frantic attempts at making up for the presence of a guardian in the house

i think there would actually be some really interesting parallels with rose in this au.. maybe i'm drawing from my own experiences as well but i think he'd begin to assume that every time his brother opens his mouth, he's going to criticize karkat

but instead of reacting like rose with the "making yourself more of a puzzle"/passive aggressive stuff, he gets a more defensive/hackles raised/"argue with you before you can argue with me" approach

and the thing is that they do love each other and would take a bullet for the other etc etc etc.. but they don't know how to express it because they've fallen into these shitty patterns

and it really doesn't help that kankri has grown somewhat resentful of signless over the years... that mix of resentment and fear and love gets more extreme and more polar every time signless gets injured during a political demonstration

i think kankri and signless would also be slightly closer than karkat and signless, as signless' job really only started to ramp up when karkat was less than years old and kankri was in his early double digits

kankri autistic btw its word of god (i am god)

karkat has a pet crab. its name is also karkat. he vents his frustrations to it.

i feel like the vantases exemplify both the best and worst parts of their aspects with one another as well... the strength of their bonds keeps them together and grounded, but TOO grounded. [insert Blood rant here]

the Blood rant:

i define Blood as bonds, responsibility, and the "core". if Life is the fertile soil and everything living on a planet's surface, then Blood is the gravitational core of the planet keeping everything together

i also think Blood, Heart, & Mind work in tandem to define a person just as blood serves to connect the pieces of the human body... Heart is the soul and the self, Mind is the application of one's self through active choices (agency), while Blood defines both the self and the choices one makes in greater detail [and, as an aside, Life provides the physical spark of life needed to keep the heart pumping blood]

SO BASICALLY! too much Blood makes you stagnate, so for example:

kankri is split between staying home with karkat or going to college across the country and being truly unbound for the first time in years

another crisis of Blood: signless is caught between his empathy and responsibility to the whole world and his responsibility to his own children

okay so here's more status quo stuff:

the maryam and vantas kids grow up together and its hilarious because you'll see them all together and its just like (girlboss) (girlboss) (physical manlet) (emotional manlet)

the maryam girls are actually miss rosa's nieces but she took them in when they were both pretty young

the pyropes know the vantases well enough considering pyrope senior and sign have known one another from their respective legal practices for years, but they live on the other side of town

the leijons lived in town when kankri and meulin were very young, but they moved and travelled for a long time before coming back and reestablishing their roots

the captors (psii being one of sign's oldest and closest friends) move into town with the peixes family pretty early on though

the condesce is.. a horrible spouse and guardian, to put it plainly. she's very emotionally manipulative and isn't averse to smacking people around, including her own family. she moves herself and her perfect little family into town so she can properly oversee a new business venture close by

feferi is one of the best young swimmers in the country and has a pretty good shot of getting onto the olympic team.. a lot of this drive to be perfect and to be better results from the condesce's unrelenting pressure and thinly veiled resentment throughout her whole life

so yeah psii, )(ic, feferi, and sollux all live together and it's really not great for anyone involved. (meenah ran away years ago, and crashed on aranea's couch for a pretty long while—mituna moved out with latula for college before psii and the condesce got married)

it gets bad to the point of sollux staying with the maryams for two months while the adults try to sort out that absolute clusterfuck and get the divorce proceedings going (meenah finally convinces feferi to get out and come stay with her and aranea for the duration as well)

in terms of relationships i think latula and porrim were really really close in high school, and probably had some kind of unacknowledged thing going on for a while that never actually turned into anything because latula and mituna were going steady

kankri has had a crush on latula for years but never acted on it for similar reasons

meenah still carries a lot of that give no fucks attitude (it's developed moreso as a defense mechanism here) and can't understand why feferi refuses to leave the condesce with her

okay back to VANTAS MANPAIN i also think that karkat feels the weight of a lot of expectations on his shoulders as well

he feels responsible to live up to the example his dad and his brother set, even if it's to his own detriment—and kankri's oblivious rambling about his grades and his teachers and all his clubs certainly aren't helping the matter

kankri is one of those overinvolved kids taking a million AP's while simultaneously shitting on the collegeboard at every single step

hes this super overachiever anal retentive perfectionist type dude and (just as karkat preemptively criticizes others to forestall their criticisms of him only to harshly criticize himself) kankri subconsciously holds the people around him to the same expectations he holds for himself

so karkat also develops this sense of lacking which, in combination with everything else, culminates in self loathing and thinking he has to solve everyone else's problems and getting horribly mad at himself for every little mistake

GOD i have a lot more but lemme post this before i accidentally close out of the app and lose it all

signless and disciple getting married pretty late in life after having been in love for years, the vantases move in with the leijons and karkat suddenly has two sisters

nepeta and karkat are both juniors at this point, meulin is probably in her third year at a local college nearby while kankri is about to start his second year at a university pretty far away

the kids in general honestly but ill figure it out

more random hcs this time with kids:

kanaya and rose get into a flame war online that gradually settles into elaborate courtship rituals

also bec can inexplicably still teleport

the first sbahj movie comes out and the next six months of dave strider junior's high school career are absolute hell

actually hc that dave senior goes by d strider professionally. the d stands for a lot of things

aradia and dave frequent a lot of the same forums but never end up really interacting

meanwhile karkat and john frequent a lot of the same forums and DEFINITELY end up interacting. this turns into grudging (at least on karkat's part) friendship after they find themselves fighting for their lives defending an objectively shitty movie together on the same thread

hiiiii bffles, so im mars 23 in est <3 im late as hell like super late like its 7am for me u know how it is. one second ur listening to the same song on repeat eating a can of pumpkin pie filling u had left over andd then the whole day is gone. so im gonna dump a bit about cora here and we can plot a bit.

cora is loud and energetic often too loud for the room they are in - you always get the most like honest reaction out of them even if its a bit over the top

they came to town with their solo dad and two brothers and they love their dad with all their heart and their brothers well... theyre brothers! 

their mom and dad went through a divorce and wanted nothing to do with the family and they kind of grew up with not much to their name so thats kind of what started them in being very outdoorsy they are so easy to find their fun in anything they do. they were definitely a tree kid broken bones a pack of cute bandaids. theyre still like this ngll

very crafty as well not overly artistically talented but god do they love to make dumb shit especially with pottery or clay in general like theyre ugly and they probably tried to make you a personal cereal bowl for a present and it leaked bad but it makes a good key tray for the front door 

apartment is organized mess much like them in general, things are where they need to be but those places dont exactly make sense 

rebelled quite a bit from the end of high school and theyre still kind of in that ditched class for going to listen to music and smoke in the trails behind the school this really still happened even in college which is why they dropped out 

theyre competitive espeically if its something athletic they actually coach their younger brothers soccer team and... someone probably shouldnt have let them do that theyve gotten into arguments with moms. 

while theyre pretty serious about their job they cant help but sometimes they cause a little trouble and slack off a little bit from time to time and just mess around. letting friends have free camping spots during the off time. drinking and having big campfires as they are a expert horror story teller. which occasionally they scare tourists with as well 

rollerblades everywhere unless its shitty out theyll take the bus yes they are quirky what else do you want me to say theyre not gonna get a car you know theyre a planet lover at least theyre not like a vegan or a vegetarian

tinder date / set up date through a mutual friend : can be bad can be good can be funny bad and lead to a friendship this one is always fun to do 

siblings while i have it said they have only brothers im more than happy to work with that. one brother is a minor and id like to keep it that way,  but the other i dont mind about the age or anything

No one ever sleeps, gin is often found in various closets or on top of places he shouldnt be able to reach. first of all the apartment complex belongs to mishima because to me he honestly seems like a landlord (but the nice kind)

nao is the one who’s lived there the longest, then sou and keiji and after that everyone joined until the newest residents sara and joe

both reko and alice and sara and joe live together (and nao has her own room in mishimas apartment because she’s basically his daughter anyway)

mishima only rents apartments to people who really need one and don’t have much money, and he personally arranges prices with each one, to adjust it to the amount they’re able to spend

for example, nao is a struggling student, gin’s mom a single mom etc.

he’s really nice and all the residents love and adore him (and so should you)

yea so, gin’s mom obviously left his dad (as she should in any good au) and their life isn’t exactly perfect, gin still has nightmares about his dad and while physical scars may have faded the ones left on the soul will take time

but everyone helps them and is there for them so all’s well that ends well

kanna lives with her dad. her parents divorced without any complications, they simply decided it wasn’t working anymore and it would be better to go separate ways than life together and have the kids sense the uneasiness. initially they agreed that the mom would take both kanna and her sister with her,but kanna didn’t want her dad to be all alone so she decided to go with him

both her mom and sister were sad and tried to convince her otherwise but her mind was set. they still regularly meet up tho

nevertheless kanna still misses her sister a lot, that’s probably why she instantly latches onto sou

sou is like ???  when that sweet kid latches onto him and basically follows him around 24/7 and looks up to him and he’s just;;;; constantly scared of fucking up

keiji constantly teases him about ‘his little puppy’ but also encourages him that he’s doing great with her

naos an art student and works part time at a flower shop, reko and alice have their band (bc yesh), aara and joe art first years in uni and work part time at a coffee shop, keiji is uhhh well he SAYS he’s a policeman but-, q-taro is the same as canon, kai is a semi-famous chef and honestly who the fuck even knows what sou does

(as one of those peeps that get paid for intentionally hacking into company’s security to expose weaknesses, but if u honestly think he doesn’t leave a loophole for himself then you are a fool-)

actually both keiji and mishima know what he does for a living but they think it’s fun seeing everyone guessing (it’s one of the nine mysteries of the mishima apartment complex)

actually speaking of keiji and sou, literally EVERYONE, including nao, who’s lived there months BEFORE either sou or had keiji moved in, think the two are dating

gin INSTANTLY latches onto sara bc he accidentally ripped his cat plushie the first time he met her and she instantly repaired it, without hesitation

basically everyone is understanding of kanna’s dad’s and gin’s mom’s situation and someone’s always there to babysit them if the need arises 

kanna and gin basically establish a greater bond with each other than even sara and joe

except if it comes to whether sara and sou is better bc then:

sometimes they meet up in the hallways and just run through all the floors anyone they know lives on until someone just lets them in

they insist they’re not doing it on purpose, that they’re just bored, but they’re a little TOO satisfied while eating the snacks they get offered

reko and alice had their fair share of problems in the past, but both of them have been trying very hard to rebuild their broken relationship and moving in together has been a good choice for that

alice does everyone’s hair! he always styles it for the band and it’s fun, and he makes the craziest hair styles. kanna and gin are always awed at his creations

reko tried to teach both kanna and gin the piano, but after a while it got obvious that kanna had more of an affinity for it. but gin’s always rooting for her and the first one to listen while she’s practicing

sou has two cats. they’re outdoor cats so for the longest time everyone saw them but didn’t know who they belonged to, until sara finally notices what looks suspiciously like cat hair clinging to sou’s clothes…..

the cats are very friendly and outgoing and whenever someone falls asleep one sou’s couch they immediately cuddle up to them

and with cuddle up i mean lie on your face

no one has the heart to remove them though

since sou has the biggest apartment (seriously, WHERE does he get the money for it? and all that fancy stuff? sara’s going mad not knowing, especially since he’s always at home!! sometimes he doesn’t even get his own groceries, he just sends gin and kanna to get them - telling them they can get themselves sweets ofc, but that’s not the point!!) kai usually invites everyone over for dinner at sou’s at least once or twice. sou always complains why no one ever asks him for permission, but all of them see that he enjoys kai’s food just as much as everyone else so there’s that

joe and sara actually live together because joe didn’t want to burden his family any longer and also wanted to be independent and sara just… went along with it because why not. could be fun. they’re actually pretty good roommates, everyone does their part (most of the time, at least - sara will never let Joe forget that one time she asked him to wash her pantyhose and he didn’t and she had to go out in socks and a skirt during winter)

Jude notices that Chester doesn’t like where this conversation is going and at the moment jude isnt to sure if he gets where this is going.

“ she will be with me I have lionel I’m sure I can ask for help and my assistant also. She has a very clean record. I have already checked her out.”

“ oh all right we just want to let you know that if anytime you have a problem or become too busy or can’t handle her we won’t mind care for her until after the season is over with or until noah come to his senses.” Marshal says.

“ Jude you know me I run my own business I can fly back and stay as long as you need me too.”chester says.

Marshal doesn’t look happy with the offer that was made.

“ ah thanks I’ll sure I’ll be fine.” Jude says as he looks from one father in-law to the other .

By the time jude finishes his first sandwich it dawns on jude what marshal was suggesting. Jude is now in defense mode when it comes to his in laws.

As Jude thinks he is finishing his breakfast. Jude watches his in laws get up and walk to the window to watch Jax.

“ I’ll be back I need to use the restroom “

Jude gets up with his backpack and heads to the family bathroom for some privacy.He finds his phone and calls noah.

Noah’s room

Noah isn’t feeling very wel but he doesn’t know what the problem is.

“ how are you feeling today noah ?” The nurse ask Noah as she checks his vitals. Noah’s tempature is a little higher then normal. A second later Noah’s cracked iPhone starts to ring. It’s Jude’s ring tone “baby” by Justine Bieber.Noah’s ear buds are sitting next to his phone thanks to pop digging them out of his belongings.

“ wow it works. Any chance you could put my ear buds in please”noah doesn’t want to seem to eager about the phone call plus he doesn’t have the strength anyway

“ of course can’t miss a call from your baby”the nurse say before giving noah his phone and ear buds.

Noah doesn’t say anything but smile’s.

“Hello?” Noah says. It takes everything in noah to not get excited about it . Noah misses jude so much it hurts and it doesn’t help his current situation.

“ Noah can you talk?”

“ sorta” noah say as he tries not to smile.

Noah watches the nurse as she checks his Ivs and changes a empty bag of fluids.

“ what’s up?”

“ I think your dads or maybe just your dad is trying to take Jaxy from us. I don’t think I’m over reacting .”

“ there is no us jude” noah say with a broken heart.

“ I know but In a few month there will be.”

“ I want nothing to do with this or her. I’ll be filing divorce papers and I’m not going to sign the birth certificate so don’t ask.”

“Wait I didn’t plan on taking this that far noah”

“ you have no proof she’s even mine she could be the milk mans baby for all we know.”

“ wait if you don’t claim her then your parents have no claim to her then.”

“Exactly“

“ I’m still not signing anything. Why can’t I just sign her birth certificate by myself.” Jude says

“ well..“noah say

“ we aren’t getting a divorce we agreed on that when we got married”

“I’ll think about that”noah says

“Please do that“ jude says

“I have to go”noah say as the nurse decides to change his catheter. There is no way noah can talk to jude and have someone handle his junk at the same time .not happening

“ love you”

“ right back at you 100 times.”

That made jude smile.

Noah ends the call by a simple finger tap that shouldnt have too take five seconds but his good ahand is in a cast.

Noah thinks this is the only way to make sure Jaxy stays with jude. The idea of get a divorce just pissed noah off but he figures if he doesnt claim Jaxy and they are divorced then his parents can’t take her.Noah hopes jude is wrong and his parents are just trying to be helpful and not threatening.

At the nicu Jude has changed into something more comfortable.jude comes out of the bathroom and sees his in-laws in the nursery and they are about to hold Jaxy.jude walks over to the nurse station and ask to fill out Jaxy birth certificate. The nurse smiles and gives Jude the form to fill out. As Jude walks to the couch he just finished sleeping on something accords to him. He needs to think about the devils.jude doesn’t need a full scale war with his in laws in the press because this is were it is heading.There has to be a peaceful solution to this. Maybe jude was wrong about this.Jude decided that he is going to take a deep breath before doing anything rash.

Jude walks over to the window to watch his in-laws with Jaxy.

In the nursery

Marshal is holding Jaxy while sitting in the closes rocking chair near her incubator.

“ you wouldn’t mind living in New Jersey would you for a while, while your daddy’s get back together.”

“ marshal why are you even thinking about this?”

“ you have talked to our son he doesn’t even want to talk about jude or the baby.Do you think he’s going to want to get close to jude with her being around if she’s the problem?”

“I don’t think she’s the problem I think he’s just confused right now.he can’t remember his life he can’t walk or even whip his own ass.you can’t blame him for not wanting to talk to us.He is dealing with a lot.”

“ so does jude .He has the devils, a baby in the nicu ,and a husband in the hospital that is rejecting him .What about him. He’s hurting too.”

“ you think taking his baby away will help him right now.”

“ yes just for a little while”

“ just because we have a empty house and your about to retire doesnt mean you need to fill our home with someone to care for. If you want you can ask to come to la and do a series on the la food scene as your last couple of articles. I’ll miss you but I want you to be happy and if it helps jude and Noah then you should do it.i think you should apologize to jude too”

“ why would I apologize for? I suggested something that could help him in the long run.”

“ he would missed months of her life and that’s not fair to jude.”chester says.

“ what about noah he has missed everything already yes it’s only been two days but by the time he’s out of the hospital it will be weeks that he has missed being apart of her life”

“ what does that have to do with keeping Jaxy for the season“chester uses air quotas around keep.

“I figured we could ask noah to come back with us to New Jersey with us “

Chester crosses his arms across his chest.

“ marshal...”

“Why wouldn’t I ask him to come home? He doesnt know most of these people in his life.there is no way he can take care of himself chester.”

“ so you wanted to have the baby and Noah together with us until the season is over and then what?”” Then jude can come to Jersey for a week or two and then bring his family home.”

“ I don’t think that’s a good idea.” chester says

“ If it makes you feel more comfortable we can ask noah what he wants.”

In Noah’s room

Noah is taking a nap when he is woken up by his two new “ best friends”

“ we should go and let the man sleep” Johnson says.

“His appointment with his therapist starts in 10 minutes we can be quite for a few minutes.” Ritter says

Ritter takes a seat next to Noah’s bed. Johnson walks behind him and rest his head on his husband’s head.

“ perfect head rest shortie” Johnson says as he leans over to hugs Ritter from behind.

The couple quitely cuddle as noah gives in and starts to wake up.

“Hey” Ritter says

Noah nods. Johnson stands up and playful give Ritter head a shove. Ritter smile and sticks his tougue out at him.

Noah smiles and then yearns.

“Ready for some hard work today.”ritter says

“ I need the use of my arm back. I can’t

“Well I’ll try my best to get you back to wiping and wacking.” Ritter say

Noah and Johnson couldnt help but to smile and chuckle.

A few minutes later the physical therapist arrives and Noah starts his first session.Ritter stands off to the side to watch. Noah informs the therapist that Ritter will be helping him with his therapy.

Jude comes off the elevator and heads to Noah’s room.jude left his in-laws downstairs because they forgot something in the rental car. Jude sees that noah has company again.

Jude passes the therapists as he enters the room.

“ excuse me” jude say as he passes the therapist who is a 30 something white guy that looks like the same height as his dad with red hair.

When jude sees noah , he sees Ritter showing noah something on his phone and he’s sitting on the edge of his bed.

“ sup jude”Johnson says from his chair by the bathroom.

“Hi”jude says with a small wave and smile.

Noah looks ups and smiles and then it fades.

“Hey boss how’s it going.”ritter says

“ it’s going. I hate to break up this little... gathering but I need to talk to noah privately please.” Jude waves his finger around as he talks.

“We are out “Johnson say as he get up.

“ we will see you tomorrow.”ritter says in a way too cheery voice for jude.

Jude crosses his arms as he watches his players leave his husband’s hospital room.jude closes the door behind his player.

“ you didn’t have to run them out like that.why are you acting jealous for? Not that I don’t mind the messiness of it”Noah ask with a smile

“Because they get to stay and talk with you and you let them help you when it should be me. I’m your husband not them.Im the one that should be feeding you pizza and helping with your therapy.” Jude says

“ you know you can’t right now plus Ritter is getting his degree physical therapy.

“Noah why can’t this be where I show you how I feel so you know that I love you. This can be part of me whowing you back.”jude says softly.

“ no it can’t be!”noah says firmly.

Jude takes a seat next to Noah’s bed.they don’t speak or look at each other.

“ I’m sorry I raised my voice at you”noah say

“ I’m not sorry I got jealous.”jude says

“ Jude they are just looking for friends. Nothing more. There just kids”

Jude smiles.

“Kids .” Jude smile and chuckles to himself

“They are to me” noah says

There’s a knock on the door they both look up and and see marshal and Chester at the door.jude waves them in.

“ we will talk later” jude says before his in-laws walk in.

“ it’s good to see you too talking” chester says.

“ I’m glad you’re here jude.”marshal says

“ he forgot your gift in the car”chester says.” Marshal takes out a gift bag out of a paper bag and hands it to jude.

Jude looks and sees it’s a bottle of bourbon.

“Thank you”

Jude shows noah the bottle.

“Score!”noah says

“Glad you like it” marshal say

“ this will come in handy”jude says as he sits back down and places the bottle in backpack.

“ we would..”marshal starts to say.

“ no he would like to talk to you too about something.marshal I love you but I want no part in this.” Chester say.

At this point noah is wondering if jude is right about the conversation he had with his dads.

“ Chester” marshal says with his arms crossed and a straight back.jude and Noah look at each other and then back to the embattled couple. Noah is surprised that his dad isn’t backing down.now the suspense is killing both Jude and Noah.what is this about.the silence conversation between Noah’s fathers end with chester walking away to stand behind jude. Jude looks to noah and he shrugs the best that he can.

“Alright. Noah I want to invite you home until you can get back on your feet. I don’t care how long it takes. I want to make sure you recovering quickly”

“ I have a spine specialist coming in a few days to see if there a any treatment that can help him.”

Noah looks to his parents them back to jude.

“Most specialist are in Cleveland or new York.Noah’s aunt lives in Cleveland and we are close to New York I think it’s best that noah comes back to New Jersey with us. What do you think noah?”

“ my star reporter isnt going anywhere” everyone’s attention turns towards Lionel at the door.

“ the show must go on”lionel says

“ I adore you but who is going to take care of him when he goes home?”

“ Jude you are going to hire a nurse for your husband right?”

“Of course I’m looking into making the house ascessible for a wheelchair later today and then I’ll look for a nurse next”

“ that really not nessary Jude”noah says

“Why isn’t it?” Jude ask

“ I’m going home for a well”

“ what? What about your job”Lionel says

“ I won’t be able to work until my wrist heals up”

“ how long did the doctor say it should take”Lionel ask

“ about 8 weeks”

“ then fine I’m giving you 9 and a half weeks to get back to la”

“Yes mama”

“ Noah..”jude says

“I don’t know you jude” noah says

“ How are you going to get to know me if you don’t stay in la?”

“ FaceTime?”

“ are you sure you want to do this noah” chester ask before jude could do it.

“Yes I’m sure I think it’s for the best”noah says

Why is he doing this jude thinks to himself.all jude could do is just stare at noah from his seat by noahs bedside.

Jude gets a sudden urge to see their daughters.

“Excuse me”jude gets up and heads to the door.

“ Jude?” Chester says.

Chester follows jude out.

“Jude!”

Jude stops and turns around.

“ you have to know that I have nothing to do with any of this.”

Chester hug jude.

“. I Just need to see Jaxy right“ jude says

“ I get it I don’t want to deal with my husband at the moment. I don’t want noah to leave his life here.hw is he suppose to remember his life her if he isn’t here.”chester looks sincerely concerned about Noah leaving his life in la.

“I feel like I can’t say anything right now .i want to but I don’t think I can make a difference.” Jude says

Jude walks away and gets in the elevator.

Chester watches him leave before heading back to Noah’s room.

The walk to the nicu pissed Jude off even more then he was.Jude needs the weight of his daughter in his arm to calm him down. Right now Jude feels like it just his little devil and him against the world.jude doesn’t like it one bit.

When Jude finally gets to the nicu he is disappointed to find out that she was taken for some kind of testing and will be right back.After talking to the nurse jude leave to wait in the waiting area of the nicu until Jaxy comes back when he notice a few familiar faces at the door ,waiting to be buzzed in .

“Larosa?” Jude says to himself before walking over to great his player and wife.

“Mr kinkade James jude told me what happened.” As soon as she was close enough she hugs jude.Katie says.

she has brown hair down to her shoulders and a thick New Jersey accent.

“ your father was so kind to us when our jessica was born early 4 years ago.”Katie say

She keeps talking and jude can’t get a word in edgewise.he wonders how larosa handles it.she finally lets jude go.

“ our little jessica was only 24 weeks. I’m amazed she made it. I was such a wreck but your dad sent his private plane to Utah to pick my James up after the game so he could hold herI really didn’t think she was going to make it. I don’t care what anyone say your father is a wonderful man.” Katie says

“ ah thank you” jude says

Larosa nods and smiles at jude and shrugs.

The two have a moment where they agree that letting the women tell was the best thing to do.

This goes on for 20 minutes,after a while jude fines that constant chit chat of the women is calming.

Jude looks up and sees a two nurse pushing Jaxy back to the nursery.

“ thank you so much for the kind words but I have to go my daughter just got back from testing.” Jude says and gets up and heads to the nursery. Jude stands back so he’s not in the way.

“ guess whose getting there first milestone sticker”jude turns and it the first nurse he meet a few days ago jessica.

The two nurses gets out of the way and jude can sees what’s going in.jaxy isn’t on a ventilator a anymore.

“ congratulations do you want to add the sticker?”the nurse says

Jude smiles and takes the reusable stick and places it on the top of her incubator. Jude texted Murray last night and asked her to take pictures and finds picture of anything devils related, the house and of jude and Noah so he could decorate the incubator like the rest of the babies in the nicu. After jude is done jessica takes Jaxy out of the incubator and hands her to Jude.

“ wasn’t that so much easier?”jessica says

“Look at you your doing so good my little devil.”

“Little Devil ?that a little odd for a nick name for such a beautiful little girl.”Jessica say

“ oh well my basketball team is called the devils”

“As in the la devils”jessica says. She s looks at jude like she has never seen him before.

“ yes one and the same” jude say

“Wow my kids love to watch them on tv”

“That’s awesome I’m glad they enjoy them”

“ my sons are really happy that Derek is back. It’s a shame about the scandal with that reporter and dancer. It all seem just weird. That reporter seems so nice too. I like his smile and he’s pretty hot to. he has such a gentle and kind face”

“ yes he does”Jude’s says to himself out loud.

“I never knew how all of that end.”

“Well I kept my team then I married the reporter and had a baby”

Jessica looks to the baby then to jude then back to the baby.

“ seriously?”

“ yes I’d show you pictures but my hands aren’t free” jude say

“ Get out of town my sons said he was gay but I didn’t believe them.” Jessica say as she walks away to talk to a coworker that waved her over.

Jude watches the nurse walk away and notices a man carrying a insulated box and a package. Jude shrugs and goes back to rocking in the rocking chair. All jude need right now was to hold his baby girl close. Jude closes his eye .

“ you know what she’s right your papa.” Jude frowns

Jude doesn’t think papa is right .

“ daddy?” Jude frowned s again

“ dada?”jude turns his nose up to that name too.

Jude has to stop talking and think why is he is having such a hard time picking a name for himself. It’s not that he has a problem with being a father but jude is starting to think that it has to do with his daddy issues.

Jude frowns and than sighs

“ you know what my cuddle bug we can figure out my name later ok?.”jude smile asJaxy stretches into his chest.

“ oh you approve huh. So your cuddle bug your...papa ?”jude waits to see if she has a reaction.

Jude feels Jaxy toes wiggle

“ ok your papa is my love bug and I’m your papa’s dane. Not sure if that a acceptable name for you to call me but I’m sure we can figure something out. I promise you that you won’t be calling me jude ever no you won’t my little cuddle bug. “ Jude kisses the top of Jaxy head.

“ Mr Kinkade Medeiros?”jude looks up and sees the nurse in front of him.

“ this came for you?”

“ ah thank you” Jessica lays the package on Jude’s lap

“ you know when you start getting mail some place you know you’re there a little too much” Jessica say jokingly

“ well my husband is here and my daughter where else should I be?”

“ I completely understand.i would be the same way”

listen i know nobody cares or anything but i have to put this out somewhere on the internet but i dont need anybody to listen. okay so ever since i can remember, my dad has been telling me and my siblings that he has been having a recurring dream since he was 13 years old that at some point while he was 52 years old he would die saving 2 girls from a fire in an apartment or from somewhere upstairs. this sounded pretty unlikely to me as a kid because we lived in a house with 6 people in it and when he was 52 we still had planned to be living in the house that we lived in then because I would still be in high school and we weren’t gonna move out until i graduated. well a few years back my parents got a divorce and my dad moved into an apartment that we live with him for the first half of the week. When he turned 52 (on December 7, 2016) i remember him saying some stuff about how this is the year and everything and we were a lot more cautious with flammable stuff because wow guess what for half the week its just me, my sister, and my dad in an upstairs apartment with two broken smoke detectors. so tomorrow is his birthday which makes tonight his last day of being 52 and so thats a lil spooky. so im at my moms and we went out somewhere and on the way home she got really shaky and was shivering and when we got inside she started like freaking out a little bit so we got the bath running and we got her in it and everything was okay she said she thinks it was sort of like a panic attack of some sort but me, my sister, and my brother all agreed that something felt off and just like something was wrong and my so i checked on my mom and shes doing a lot better and then i called my dad and he was like yeah it should feel like something is off tonight is the last night of my death destiny and he was like saying all this stuff about how hes got everything that he likes hes watching razors edge aka one of his favorite movies, hes gonna make popcorn, he had fried chicken, and a little bit of beer and so all is well and i was like okaaayyy and he was like dont worry the heat isnt on and the stove or anything isnt on and that everything is okay and that if anything happens over here at my moms apartment then i know who to call (him, of course) and that like he knows that i would obviously not want to call him because he literally sees himself dying before tomorrow and i obviously dont want that but that i shouldnt block his destiny which really shakes me up like he basically just told his 17 year old daughter that if it comes between him dying tonight because its his destiny and not dying tonight then i shouldnt mess with fate which of course i believe in fate stuff like that but if its such a serious situation like this and its so personal why would i want to do that but i know that he trusts me to actually follow through because weve talked about how fate works and how messing with stuff like that is never a good idea but its just so hard and so tomorrow night at around this time i will do a checkup post on this one to make sure that everything is okay and just in case this awful thing happens tonight that i put this up here to prove that stuff like this can occur and that fucked up fate stuff can happen and you can be aware of them if you let them be shown to you and if you are that spiritually inclined like my Buddhist father that i love so deeply.

i miss my best friend. i miss her a lot. it’s not that she died or anything, but everything about our friendship crumbled and turned to dust when i moved away. i always felt bad about it. she was the only friend to show up at my old house at 5 am before we left. i dont know how i didnt cry but it broke my heart watching her walk back home from my house as the moving truck drove away. i didnt cry back then, but the memory is making me cry now because it just hurts. i dont know where it went wrong. the first few times icame back to visit my dad was fine. she’d come get me from his house (45 minutes away) and we’d drive back to our neighborhood and have a good time hanging out and talking. and then after that it felt like i was a burden. id text her and try to set something up for next time. it always seemed like something convenient would happen to where we couldnt hang out. where id just be stuck at my dad’s for 3 weeks straight. my other friends dropped me instantly when i moved, like i never really mattered to them in the first place. and maybe i didnt. i always had to butt my way in to conversations and practically invite myself to the things they did. maybe they never really liked me all along and they just tolerated me. but my best friend was always there. she’d been there for me since were we 5. 

we were close. people always thought we were sisters. we even bought the same swimsuit on accident one year without telling each other. she was one of the first people i told when i got my period. her parents treated me like i was their second daughter too. i could always walk into their house unannounced and nobody minded. my own mom also treated her like a second daughter. my dad was always an asshole to her though and i will always resent him for it. i was always at her house every weekend. it was my escape. our friendship was my escape. the fights my parents had with each other didnt matter when icould leave and go a block away to her house. i spent every weekend there. we’d run around the entire neighborhood, even finding a secret broken fence that we could go through and nearly be right by the interstate. i remember being so sad one halloween when her parents bought her a sakura cosplay costume and i couldnt convince my parents to get me an ino one. i wish i would have forced myself to go out on the last halloween i spent there even though i was sick. i didnt know it would be my last. 

ill never forget all the stupid youtube videos we watched on her dad’s computer in the basement. all the shitty youtube poops and cringy naruto chatrooms. or all the time we spent talking on the phone during the airing of new naruto episodes, or while we played animal crossing. my dad always yelled at me for being on the home phone so often but i didntcare. 

i miss her so much but she changed an awful lot after i moved. i wonder if i would have changed like her if i stayed. i wonder if i would have gotten arrested for smoking weed in her car with her. i wonder if i could have kept her out of trouble. i dont know. all the times i went up to my dad’s, he always asked if i would be seeing her and i never knew. even though id try to plan with her months in advance, something always magically came up last second. so i just stopped trying. i stopped telling her when i would show up, since it wouldnt matter anyways. it just felt like i was nothing. it still feels like im nothing. part of me wonders if she felt relief when my dad died. i wonder if she was relieved that i wouldnt have a reason to visit anymore. a reason to bother her. the last time i went up was for my step grandad’s 100th birthday. i tried making plans with her months in advance, and magically the day before she has to take her mom to a doctor’s appointment. 

i didnt know what i was expecting. i wasnt surprised. i felt bad asking my mom to take me and my bf to the zoo, but she had an old friend who lived near in that area so she said it was fine. i still felt like a burden. i felt like shit and i felt stupid in believing that anything had changed. we even went back to my old neighborhood and drove around. we drove past her house too, and my mom asked if i wanted to see if she was home. i just told her no. she never asked about it, but i think she knew that i was done. i was tired. a friendship of almost 10 years just. gone. like that. 

i know i shouldnt miss her because in the end, she probably stopped caring about me. but god it fucking hurts. everything about it hurts. i miss her. i miss all the fun we’d have during the summer, or during breaks from school. i miss trick or treating with her. i miss running around the neighborhood with her. i wholly believed she was my platonic soulmate, and then my parents got divorced and i moved away and everything just crumbled like sand between my fingers. i just hurts and i dont know what to do about it. my head is a jumbled mess and i have so many regrets and intrusive thoughts about ever leaving. it keeps me up at night and it haunts me. among other things, but it feels like a stab to the chest every time. the memories are there but they feel like they’re from a lifetime ago. they feel like they’re from someone else that wasnt me. i just want to stop thinking about it and stop remembering it all so i can stop feeling regret and stop feeling so shitty but i cant. i cant stop my brain wont let me. evyerthing is just crumbling down and i cant stop it. i bet my dad would still be alive too if i stayed. i would have gotten onto his ass about his health. even through all the pain he caused my mom and the horrible financial situations he put us in because of his drinking habit and car habit he didnt deserve to die and i hate it. i hate it and i hate that my brother had to be up there and deal with it all because he was so young an ddidnt deserve it. he was only 14 and he saw his own dad dead on the hospital bed and there was nothing he could do. i thought i could trust my dad’s girlfriend but she was a bitch and she let him die she let him die and i cant forgive her she’s a nurser she should have known heart attack signs and called 911 right awya instead of waiting. she killed him and icant ever forgive her and i hope she gets what she deserves.

god this is devolving really quick and i cant sotp it im so sorry i cant i jsut need to get this out because my brain jsut wont stop and i  cant stop thinking i cant stop crying i just want to stop existing for a while. but i dont want to die because i have too many people i care about anf theyd be so sad so i have to sstay. nobody online would know what happened and i cnat do that to them i lvoe them all so much. im sorry this is getting really bad i just wanted to get my thoughts out there and it turned into a mess. ill be okay i always am so please odnt worry im just. really really. i dont even know how to describe it.

AHHH OMG, I was out all day & Actually MISSED the NEW episode like wtfff?!!? it was TOrture!! & I literally had to delete twitter and Tumblr off my phone because the devil himself would’ve tempted me lmfao😭 I love spoilers but not when everyone has seen the episode but me! it’s okay though I had some rum chata to distract me lol, which is just rum and horchata which is the Hispanic version of Horlicks so, At least I was in the CtM Spirit 🙃

From Toy Story 2 to Under the Skin, writers pick the cinematic moments that made them cry and explain why. Spoilers ahead

Aunt Lucys trip, Paddington 2

On the face of it, Paddington is a fairly broad kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, and so probably shouldnt make a grown human cry hot, salty tears. But that description ignores the fact that Paddington is a really, really well-made kids film franchise about the hijinks of a CGI bear, one that completely gets the pathos of its central character, a little lost immigrant searching for something resembling a family. Both films ably tug at the heartstrings, but the second film got me sniffling as early as 15 minutes in when Paddington imagines giving his only living relative, Aunt Lucy, a tour around London, something that in reality is impossible as shes stuck thousands of miles away in darkest Peru. When at the end of the film spoiler alert Aunt Lucy arrives on the Brown familys doorstep and she and Paddington hug, I completely, unapologetically lost it. Lord knows what surprises Paddington 3 has planned for my tear ducts. GM

When She Loved Me, Toy Story 2

Just before writing this, I put When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 on YouTube once again, just to check. Yep. Just as always, I choke up, in the same abject, lip-wobbling, head-bowed way. It still has that terrible power.

When She Loved Me is the song written by Randy Newman and sung by the devastated toy cowgirl Jessie and in fact performed, beautifully, on the soundtrack by Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. The song is Jessies way of telling Woody why she has grimly decided to submit to the airless world of the toy museum, because it is better than the inevitable heartbreak and delusion of loving a fickle human child. She reveals her anguish that her owner, Emily, has fallen out of love with her outgrown her, in fact. As Emily entered the world of adolescence, pop music and boys, Jessie was left under the bed and finally dumped.

When I first saw this scene and misled by the size disparity between toy and owner I thought it was a parable for a childs anxiety over being abandoned by the parent. But now that I am a parent I can see the truth which is completely the opposite way around. It is about the parents fear of being abandoned by the child: the terrible fear, actually the terrible certainty, that the kid one day wont want to play with you. They will grow up and want something else. This song is utterly devastating. It is modern cinemas equivalent of the Vesti La Giubba aria from Pagliacci the tragic clown smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. Im afraid to watch it too often. I dont want to break down over and over again. But I also want to preserve its power over me. PB

Ruths death, Fried Green Tomatoes

In many respects, Fried Green Tomatoes is not a movie for the modern age. It is a story about racism in the deep south told largely by way of eliciting our sympathies for wealthy white characters; it is a story about a lesbian relationship that had to slide its lesbian relationship in unnoticed, by presenting it as a very close friendship fulfilled by food fights, poker games and heads leaning meaningfully on shoulders. But I am deeply fond of this 1991 Sunday afternoon classic. Ive seen it more times than is healthy, and so I know exactly what is coming and when, and yet am still unable to resist the inevitable guttural sobbing that comes with the death scene.

There are plenty of teasers for it, too: Buddy on the train tracks, even Mrs Threadgoode talking about the death of her adult son. Nothing, however, can prepare the viewer for Ruth asking Idgie to tell her the old story about the frozen lake thats now somewhere over in Georgia. It doesnt so much pull on heartstrings as play a full symphony on them, and its devastating. As Sipsey puts it, a lady always knows when to leave. RN

The rooftop dance, Eat Pray Love

While I was repelled by the mere existence of the Eat Pray Love book, I found something strangely charming about its big-screen translation. It was a mixture of glossy food porn, glossy travel porn and glossy Julia Roberts emoting porn (she remains one of the best fake criers in Hollywood) all wrapped up in a rather unique tale of a woman trying to unshackle herself from the men in her life. But while that all provided mostly surface-level enjoyment, one scene cut deeper and the extent to which it cuts surprises me still.

As is often with the case with movie tears, these were tied to a real-world experience that had happened not long before I sat down to watch. I was dumped by a long-term boyfriend without much of an explanation and without any sort of warning. I was heartbroken and seeking some form of closure that was kept cruelly out of reach. I didnt understand why it had happened and it was the not knowing that felt harder than the break-up itself.

In the film, Roberts character has left her flighty husband and remains haunted by the heartbreak shes caused. On a rooftop in Delhi, a vision of him appears and they dance to Neil Youngs heart-grabbing Harvest Moon, the song that was supposed to accompany their first wedding dance. She reminds him that she did love him. He tells her he still loves and misses her. They cry and continue to dance. At the end, she tells him that it wont last forever, nothing does. Its a short scene but it hit me like a bus, it still does now. My tears are for the film but theyre also for something deeper: the sting of loving someone who stopped loving me and the ache of an ending I was never allowed in real life. BL

The thunderstorm, Click

Adam Sandler can make me cry harder than hes ever made me laugh, the true test of a clown. Yes, even in the underappreciated comedy Click about a dad who finds a magical remote control in the Beyond section of Bed Bath & Beyond.

Sandlers workaholic architect fast-forwards through the worst parts of his day the dull weeknight frozen dinners with his family, the repetitive arguments, the gross times everyone gets knocked out by the flu in order to get to his next promotion so he can buy his kids whatever they want. His plan doesnt go well, of course. But whats shocking is how gut-rippingly painful it is to see Sandler hit play on his life only to realize hes skipped past everything that matters. His bodys been present, the bills have been paid, but his emotional engagements been staticky a trade-off too many of us can understand.

In the climax, old man Sandler sobs in a thunderstorm as he arrives at his daughters wedding only to learn shed rather her stepdad walk her down the aisle, and his son has grown up to mimic his job-first, family-second example. I rarely cry at unavoidable tragedies where no ones at fault. My weakness is characters regretting choices they cant rewind. Click isnt Ingmar Bergman Sandler gets a happy ending but I barely saw his relief through the rainstorm on my face. AN

The courtroom, Kramer vs Kramer

By all accounts, Robert Bentons film Kramer vs Kramer skews heavily toward Dustin Hoffmans Ted, whose wife Joanna has left him and their six-year-old son Billy. Billy and Ted make french toast together, or argue about eating ice cream before dinner, or visit the nearby jungle gym. Were it not for Meryl Streep and the trenchant, intuitive way she humanizes a woman who, in the 70s, would have otherwise been made to seem mawkish and unstable Kramer vs Kramer might be just a schmaltzy panegyric on fatherhood.

But leave it to our greatest living actor to turn a film on its head with a single scene. You know the one: Joanna, during the custody hearing, is subjected to a string of sexist questions about her failure as a wife and a mother. When asked why shes seeking custody of Billy, she blinks three times, beginning the monologue Streep herself wrote in an effort to redeem her character, who she initially perceived to be an ogre, a princess, an ass.

Billys only seven years old. He needs me, she says, reciting the word need with a whispery uptick as she glances at her ex. Im not saying he doesnt need his father. But I really believe he needs me more. After catching her breath, she becomes more emphatic: I was his mommy for five and a half years. Since I was about Billys age when my parents got divorced, ergo, too young to understand or even care, Ive always been astonished and, by proxy, moved by how compassionately Streep plumbs the depths of Joannas truth. The beach, Under the Skin

Little focuses the mind more effectively on human distress than the arrival of your own kids; scenes in films which I might once have snoozed through now induce boggle-eyed terror OH MY GOD, DONT LEAVE THAT BABY NEAR THAT COFFEE TABLE, IT HASNT GOT A CORNER PROTECTOR! But nothing has topped at least, not yet the scene in Under the Skin where Scarlett Johansson murders a swimmer and drags him off to eat him.

Its not the murder thats so epically upsetting, though its gruesome enough: Johansson, playing an alien visitor permanently on the lookout for human nutrients, simply bangs him over the head with a large stone as he lies prone and exhausted on the beach. Its what goes on in the background that is so awful. A woman goes into the water to try and rescue her drowning dog, and her male partner instinctively rushes in after her, leaving their toddler alone high on the shore. Johanssons chum the only other adult on this lonely Scottish beach goes to help too.

With the speed of falling dominoes, a nice little day out unravels: the mother and father are swept away to who knows where, and the alien takes her chance to acquire their would-be rescuer as a food source. Meanwhile, the suddenly abandoned kid is shrieking in terror as the night closes in. Another, less astute film-maker, might cap the scene with the alien scooping the kid up and adding him to her dinner menu, but what Glazer contrives is absolutely horrifying. Johansson-alien simply ignores it, and leaves it alone. The film moves on, this incident consigned to the past.

I have to confess I was absolutely blindsided by the scene; mostly, I think, because of the its sheer unexpectedness. I think I was gripped by a kind of internal hysteria: shock, hyperventilation, a feeling the back of my head might explode. (I cant say I actually cried though I may have, but in the confusion I cant really remember.) I certainly had to hold on to the seat to stop myself bolting out of the cinema then and there. I am aware theres a some degree of self-indulgence here: the fact that my daughter was about the same age as the kid in the film undoubtedly super-sensitised my reactions. But everyone has their weak spot; this is very much mine. AP

The birth, Cheaper by the Dozen 2

Cheaper by the Dozen 2, if you havent seen it you probably havent, why would you have? is the sequel to the remake of family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen, and Im sure it was made because Steve Martin, the star of the franchise, needed to pay his mortgage. The main gist of the movie is that Martin and his wife, played by Bonnie Hunt, have 12 children who get into various japes. Its asinine. But during a time in my life when I was making a lot of transatlantic flights, Cheaper By the Dozen 2 was always an option on the British Airways seatback televisions, and one day I found, because of the frequency of my flights, I had watched all of the other films.

What choice did I have? At the climactic scene, where the oldest daughter, played by Piper Perabo, gives birth, and then names the baby after her father because he has shown her that there is no way to be a perfect parent, but a million ways to be a really good one, I cried so much the man sitting next to me regarded me with what appeared to be real concern. There may have not been enough cocktail napkins on the whole plane to dry my tears. Was it the recycled air? Was it the two miniature bottles of white wine? Or was it that a joyful childbirth scene can warm the cockles of even the coldest of hearts? JHE

The accidental reunion, Manchester by the Sea

Weve got a real talent for repression back in Massachusetts. Kenneth Lonergans searing Manchester by the Sea plays out a 15-minute drive from my childhood home and, true to life, the characters all struggle to articulate the perfect storms of emotion raging within them.

When Lee (Casey Affleck) has a chance encounter with his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams), the shared history between them is literally unspeakable. They sputter out fragments of sentences that act as a shorthand for vast reservoirs of guilt and self-loathing they cant bear to express, and because they know one another so intimately, they can intuit all the meaning they have to. Theyve both shoved a lot deep down inside just so they can look at themselves in the mirror, and when in the presence of the only other person on the planet who understands what theyve been through, some of it has to come out. Randi does most of the talking, inviting Lee to lunch so they can get some closure, and he ends the conversation by walking away. Shes ready to face her past and be fully present in the new life shes built for herself. Lee, a North Shore boy born and bred, feels more comfortable starting a bar fight as his form of therapy. CB

The hotel, Unrelated

Joanna Hoggs first film, Unrelated, has had something of a second life on account of being the debut of Tom Hiddleston, and set during a Tuscan summer, which means swimming pool, which means toplessness, and lots of it. Its nice to imagine the Loki-lovers streaming this masterpiece of English upper-middle-class excruciation. As its ending shows, specificity is no barrier to emotional oomph.

The story sees a woman in her early 40s, Anna (Kathryn Worth), holidaying with old friends and their teenage children. She finds she prefers the company of the kids, especially the charming Oakley (Hiddleston, then 26, playing eight years younger). The holiday implodes. Anna goes to stay at a grim airport hotel. Her friend visits, crossly wanting to know whats behind her behaviour. Anna explains that, quite recently, she thought she was pregnant but no, in fact, it was an early menopause. Shell never be able to have children. She sobs and bends double on the bed. It is shot in one take, from the middle distance, acted with a banal frankness which feels like eavesdropping.

When I saw it a decade back, it floored me: a twist I hadnt foreseen, a pain I could only imagine. A few years ago, I began consciously avoiding the film, fearful a similar fate awaited me. Now I can safely watch it again or, I thought I could, but Hogg is much too superb and mysterious a film-maker for that. It isnt simply the information which is terrible, it is the dreadful catharsis of its expression, coming after so much obfuscation. The stifle has gone; instead there is the most awful sadness. Buttoning up is often the bravest way. CS

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though.
