Isuzu’s D-Max GO2 is a special build project that has been customised to show just how easily a D-Max can be converted into an extreme off-roader. Isuzu have chosen a Utah manual in Splash White as the base truck but this is a used vehicle which has been converted post-registration.  It’s had some extensive work done and this has been built using Isuzu accessories and other aftermarket parts.

The GO2 features all of the standard Utah specification (including projector headlights and LED daytime running lights) plus: ARB heavy-duty Sahara bar fitted with a Britpart Pulling Power Winch.  Underneath is a full underguard kit to protect the engine and transmission.  The fuel tank on a D-Max already has protection as standard but this underguard kit also includes a rear differential guard.  The Sahara bar covers over where the front fog lights would normally be so as a replacement Isuzu have added a roof mounted Lazer Light bar. A Safari snorkel will ensure that a constant source of cool, clean and dry air is available to the engine whilst increasing the GO2’s wading depth. Heavy duty, chassis mounted side steps replace the standard Utah side steps and act as rock sliders - shielding the truck from rocks and debris.

The standard Utah 18” alloys have been replaced with smaller 16” wheels and 33” General Grabber X3 Mud Terrain tyres for added performance when the going gets tough.  The new wheels offer fantastic off-road capability and work together with an enhanced Pedders braking system - heavy duty vented discs and part ceramic pads at the front and a replacement drum and disc brake combination at the rear.  This retains the advantage of having a drum handbrake, which is best for off-road environments, but upgrades the vehicle braking to vented disc brakes.

Pedders TrakRyder eXtreme suspension has been added; consisting of two front adjustable coilovers and two rear leaf springs combined with adjustable shock absorbers.  A Pedders TrakRyder front upper wishbones have also been installed as well as a Pedders rear anti-roll bar kit.  The D-Max GO2 has also been fitted with a raising kit to add extra ground clearance to help with off-road performance. A lockable rear differential has also been incorporated for increased off-road assistance. A lockable diff locks both rear wheels together so they both turn at the same rate and this increased traction will definitely help get the D-Max GO2 out of any sticky situations.

There’s another heavy-duty bumper at the rear, this time with a rear step tow bar.  The rear parking sensors had to be disconnected to fit this but the Utah’s reversing camera, which is positioned in the tailgate handle, has been retained.  The tailgate opens gently thanks to the spring-loaded hinges on the Pro-Lift tailgate assist. A fully lockable and retractable Mountain Top roller cover has been fitted to the load bed.  The GO2 has an under-rail load liner (to accommodate the Mountain Top roller cover) and also benefits from an aluminium bed drawer system with lockable storage compartments.

There’s keyless entry to access the D-Max GO2 plus a push button start system. Heavy-duty seat covers have been fitted, front and rear, to help preserve the  standard Utah leather upholstery from mud and dirt - rubber trays have also been added to protect the floor.

Whilst the GO2 was created to be exceptionally capable off-road it still retains all the Utah’s comfort features: automatic air conditioning, a 7" multi-function colour touchscreen, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay™ & Android Auto™, Bluetooth® connectivity, DAB radio, eight speakers and front and rear USB ports.

The GO2 is an example of how to prepare a D-Max for off-road use and here at Motoring Musings; Motorsport Mutterings we'd expect the GO2 to build on the solid off-road reputation of the standard truck.

Broader Perspective

As I was talking with Matt Grimes & the crew from CCOR, we stumbled into a conversation about how the best all-around builds usually ended up being a healthy mix of aftermarket parts ENHANCED with clever custom application.

See it’s all about a broader perspective.

Someone with skills, tools, and creativity can piecemeal together anything, from a hotrod to a Honda. They can raid junkyards, backyards, and Craigslist… & custom fabricate brackets, mounting points, brakes, flares, etc. You get the idea; they can create something cool. Something that gets attention, and deserves attention. We’re not knocking it.

But the reality is: There’s a fine line between ‘attention’ and actual bonafide ‘performance capability’.

No Ceiling

There’s also a fine line between a hobby, versus an industry. A hobbyist builds something in the garage for his own needs. Meanwhile the aftermarket industry creates innovative & improved products… and then SELLS those products to a hungry customer base, giving the enthusiast wider & better range of options.

Any chassis with strong aftermarket support, will be solidified as a strong chassis.

I mention this here, because Jeep has the strongest aftermarket of any vehicle on the planet. And as such, there is literally no ceiling as to where you can take one.

This jeep came to us as a vehicle that had been built a couple of different times, and wheeled hard. After looking her over, it was clear that we had a good, solid platform at the core, but most-all of it had to go. We reused what we could.. and upgraded the rest.

The goal was to keep a low center of gravity, so we designed a low-profile cage, and stretched the suspension. We also used high-clearance fenders & corners to allow an even amount of up/down travel, and ensure an excellent ride quality both ON the trail… and TO/FROM the trail.

It’s a well thought out machine.

And while there is a ton of custom fabrication wrapped up in the build… the strategy was to buy as much store-bought aftermarket stuff as possible… and then COMBINE it with our knowledge of off-road performance & custom fab. Basically to use what is tried, true, and tested… and then make it even better for this particular application.

And even with something that came out looking this good, if asked of it, it would qualify & be highly competitive within its class. Next on the list is an LS engine and 480 transmission!

-Plumbed the fuel system with 2 fuel filters. One late-80s Corvette filter after the fuel pump, and one out of a 1988 K5 blazer before the pump. The Corvette filter has a high pressure return diaphragm, allowing us to use an aftermarket fuel cell & not inhibit fuel delivery (to and from).

Ford Invades Easter Jeep Safari in Moab with Five Concept Broncos

When the all-new Ford Bronco debuted, waves were sent throughout the automotive world as many predicted that the revived model would come for the beloved Jeep Wrangler. Most of us, however, did not anticipate just how bold of a move the brand would make to establish its spot and even wage war on the Wrangler in the off-road community. That being said, Ford pulled out all the stops this week when it crashed the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. The Blue Oval sent a fleet of off-road Ford Bronco concepts to the event which is traditionally the place where Jeep unveils its latest concept trucks.

We should note that the Easter Jeep Safari event is run by a local group called the Red Rock 4-Wheelers and not the automaker itself. It ran from Saturday, March 27, and will end on Sunday, April 4. The week-long fest mainly consists of day-long trail rides departing from Moab in Utah where participants provide their own four-wheel-drive vehicle and embark on adventures planned and led by the oldest 4WD club in Moab.

The event’s website itself states that “There are no restrictions as to what type make or model of vehicle is used even though the name – dating back to the mid-60s uses the term “Jeep”. Even so, it’s safe to say that Ford was hot on the heels of Jeep when it chose to unveil its five off-road concepts and a plethora of accessories for the Bronco and Bronco Sport in Moab. Call it joining in on the party or party crashing, but this was a smart move no less and certainly got the attention of its intended audience and more! 

When Ford unveiled its Bronco and Bronco concepts in the summer of 2020, it was fairly evident that the brand would place a large focus on accessories for the trucks. After all, The Blue Oval offers over 200 factory-backed add-ons for the standard model and over 100 for the Sport trim right from launch. The five concept models headed to Moab, Utah will showcase a subsequent rollout of parts as Ford has teamed with aftermarket experts ARB 4×4 Accessories, RTR Vehicles, and 4 Wheel Parts to build them. Let’s take a closer look at these off-road beasts and their goodies so you can get an idea of how you can customize the Bronco. 

Bronco Badlands By RTR Vehicles

The first Bronco is based on the four-door Badlands trim and can be easily identified by the silver and neon green exterior adorned with topography-themed livery. All customizations on this Bronco were done by RTR Vehicles, a long-time tuner and Ford accessories partner. RTR was founded by pro drifter and Formula D racer Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Bronco Badlands By ARB 4×4 Accessories

The next Bronco Badlands edition comes courtesy of ARB 4×4 Accessories, Australia’s largest manufacturer of 4×4 parts. This model boasts a number of high-performance parts designed by ARB specifically for the Ford Bronco two- and four-door variants. And, with a big “ARB” logo pasted to its doors, this concept is a hard one to miss.

The 4 Wheel Parts Bronco started its life out as a Black Diamond Series model. The U.S. off-road equipment retailer treated it to some heavy-duty suspension and accessories like a roof rack, awning, overhead tent, and camping gear. Apparently, 4 Wheel Parts is also responsible for the lone Bronco Sport in this pack, which wears a rooftop tent along with a new spare tire carrier and its very own off-road-centric wheel and tire package.

The fifth and final Bronco is based on the four-door Outer Banks model with Sasquatch Package. This truck boasts a handful of high-tech luxury features with rugged off-road Ford-licensed accessories. This includes JAC Products rock rails, fender flares by Air Design, Trail Armor rocker panel covers by Lund, a 40-inch curved LED lightbar by Rigid on top, and a retractable full-roof soft-top by Bestop, and Bronco-branded luggage. A matte black hood wrap and Covercraft windshield sunscreen are added to reduce glare. 

The interior features accessories that optimize space and allow for secure storage thanks to a DC Safety rear cargo organizer with a first-aid kit, Tufty MOLLE straps and security drawer below, and a Console Vault center console. All of this comes in addition to the features offered by the Sasquatch Package which can be found below.
